Bay boxing glory revived with title fight NCEBA DLADLA

HE fourround heavyweight bout between Port Eli-zabeth pugilists Lesley Hope and Renier Strydom at the Walmer High School Hall in Gqeberha this Sunday (June 16) not only has all the ingredients of a war of attrition but is also bringing the metro a step closer to reviving its former boxing glory. It will be a professional debut for the duo and there is a lot at stake as this bout has been declared an elimination for the Eastern Cape Title. “Because of the scarcity of heavier fighters in the province, the winner of this bout could be challenging

for the provincial title,” said Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. And both boxers want to stake a claim at the ultimate prize, arguing that they are the best.
The duo are former friends and stablemates at Billy Louw’s gym in Sydenham. But since they signed the contract to fight in the undercard of Sibongile Nkebe’s bill, there is no love lost between them. Hope who is known as “The Rock” is still with Louw while Strydom is currently under the tutelage of Shane Marshall at Cat Skills Boxing Club in Swartkops. The latter is known by the moniker, “Man of Faith”. He believes he’s got the artillery to break Hope’s plans of a crack at the title. “This is not a game, this is a fight. I am going to show Lesley ‘Hopeless’ what it is to be a heavyweight boxer. He has got no chance! He has insulted me by signing to fight against me. I’m going to make him feel the pain,” said Strydom who turned professional last year but was never fortunate to lace-up a glove as a pro. “I am happy I signed the contract. I’m not scared of Renier (Strydom). I hear there is a lot of talk, but come the fight we’ll get it out. My father never raised cowards. This fight means a lot to me. I train hard and fight easy. They don’t call me The Rock for nothing,” said Hope. “The boy is ready to rumble. I tell you now, there could be blood in the ring on the day as there is bad blood between the two boxers,” said Billy Louw. “We’ve worked so hard for the fight. We eat, talk and sleep boxing so Hope won’t last the distance,” said Marshall. “The return of white boxers to the sport is a good thing; we appreciate it. Whites have been out of the game for some time here. As a country we could not relax with only one colour involved - in any code,” said Mapitiza. He added, “Unlike their black counterparts, white boxers bring families, friends, colleagues and fans to the venues and that is a good marketing tool for any sport.”

Prospective entrepreneurs helped with business tools NCEBA DLADLA CENSUS 2011 portrayed South Africa as a youthful nation with the average age of the population at 25 years and a third of the 52 million population under the age of 15 years. A youthful nation is generally regarded as a positive development. The unemployment statistics of the youth, however, which is estimated to be about 4,4 million people, are cause for very serious concern.
It is against this backdrop that Absa Group Limited (Absa Bank) organised an entrepreneurship workshop at the Radison Blu Hotel in Summerstrand last Thursday to benefit about 150 young people (aged between 14 and 35 years) from across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. According to Absa Eastern Cape Communication Manager Cathy Schwarz, the campaign, which is called “Unlocking Youth Potential”, was one of several employee volunteering opportunities supported by Absa in the country and Barclays Bank in the rest of Africa.

R20 000 reward for info on torching of councillor’s house and vehicle MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape are offering a R20 000 reward to anyone who can assist with information leading to the arrest and possible conviction of perpetrators who maliciously damaged a car belonging to Councillor Aaron Nyikilana and assaulted him. It is alleged that Nelson Mandela Bay Ward 54 Cllr.Nyikilana’s twin-cab bakkie was petrolbombed while it was parked outside his Violet Street house in NU11 Motherwell on 6th April 2013. The councillor was forced to flee as he was allegedly assaulted when he tried to intervene, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. “The bakkie’s damage is estimated to be R300 000,” said W/O Gwavu.
It is further alleged, according to Gwavu, that the house belonging to the same councillor Nyikilana was petrol bombed by a group of people on 7 May this year. Damages this time were estimated at R150 000. According to W/O Gwavu, a task team that was established to investigate these attacks did not yield results and now the police need community assistance. “A reward of up to R20 000 will be issued to anyone who can assist the police with information that may lead to the arrest and successful conviction of the perpetrators,” said Gwavu. Metro adopts a ‘pro-poor’ budget to fast-track service delivery NCEBA DLADLA

ELSON Mandela Bay Municipality approved what it called the pro-poor 2013/2014 budget on Friday 7 June.
The R8,6 billion budget, which comprises a R1,1 billion capital budget and an operating budget of R7,5 billion, will be effective from 1 July.
Though the budget reflected tariff increases in property rates, water, sanitation, refuse and electricity, all political parties represented in council agreed that the budget as well as the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) would serve the interests of the poor members of Nelson Mandela Bay communities, according to acting Communications Director, Martie Nel. Budget and Treasury Portfolio Chairperson
Councillor Balu Naran called the budget “austere and prudent.” He added that it was “unashamedly and unapologetically pro-poor” - something the municipality needed in pursuance of its mandate of redressing the imbalances and injustices of the past suffered by the broad majority of the people. “It was clear to the leadership that this budget must be allocated to further transform
the face of Nelson Mandela Bay, improve service delivery to our residents, enhance the quality of their lives, and restore their dignity,” said Naran. The focus of the budget is on human settlements, water services, sanitation, electricity and energy. A large sum of the amount is to address the bucket system by building toilets and replacing the sewerage system, according to Nel.

Matizole Gwaxula, co-founder of the Ubuntu training centre in Zwide, said this group received training in cookery, crocheting, knitting and beading, as well as computer technology. “When we work with the children at the centre, we also befriend the older folk. We want these women to become economically productive, rather than sitting at home unemployed.” Nomalanga Lamani (63) said the training had opened doors for her. “I can now start my own business with beading and other crafts. I am so grateful towards Ubuntu. My granddaughters also come to the centre after school. They receive food here and also learn skills.” Nomawonga Goduka (58), her classmate, beamed with pride. “I am a different person! I learnt so many skills, and best of all is the computer knowledge. Now I can join in the conversation when my children or grandchildren sit in front of the computer. “My family, who were all present to see us receive our certificates, are also proud of me.” Ongama Mtinka, the centre’s spokesperson, explained that they focus on the vulnerable people from the township. “This is an empowerment programme. We call these older persons the drop-ins, instead of the drop-outs. We already have a list of interested persons for the next course starting in June. “We want to help the graduates further through workshops in marketing and the setup of a business plan for small businesses with which they will hopefully start,” said Mtimka. Exciting theatre exchange programme for local actors AN exciting new theatre exchange programme between actors from Port Elizabeth and United States of America will take place during June. Marti Gobel and her company from Milwaukee will be taking Port Elizabeth by storm, with a view to a long-term exchange with groups from Port Elizabeth. Their stay here will include the one-woman production of Neat and will also include a workshop and play-reading for 40 Port Elizabeth thespians. The Renaissance/Uprooted Theatre has been negotiating this exchange for some time, and the company finally arrived in Port Elizabeth on June 9. Apart from rehearsing the show and preparing for performance, Marti Gobel will be running workshops with actors from the Port Elizabeth area. The project has been arranged
with the Isithatha Trust, an initiative started by Sharon Rother, Gift Buqa and Phambili Ngcanyisa, together with Judith Tientyen of the Sinakho Trust. The project is being run in collaboration with the Port Elizabeth Opera House. The actors involved in the workshops will get to be a part of 1 Voice! 1 Play! 1 Day! which is a national US project for the upliftment of African American Theatre. Neat is written by Charlayne Woodard, a magnificent storyteller who spins her own exquisite real-life remembrance of her braindamaged aunt, Neat, and the profound change she brought to Charlayne’s life. Neat will be performed by Marti Gobel at the Barn on Friday, June 14 and Saturday, JuJune 15, at 7.30 pm. Tickets are R65 and R50 for students and pensioners. Bees Boxing Club tourney to honour veterans of the game this Saturday NCEBA DLADLA BEES Boxing Club of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage has organised a boxing tournament at Thanduxolo High School this Saturday (June 15) featuring all the clubs in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality An upbeat Michael Mbekisa, manager of Bees Boxing Club, has announced an exciting programme to spice up what he called a development boxing tournament where Uitenhage, Motherwell, Port Elizabeth and Kirkwood Zones will be represented by both male and female participants. Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation (NMBABO) Deputy Secretary Mbekisa, who doubles as a secretary of the Uitenhage Zone, said former trainers, managers, ring officials (referees and judges) and professional boxers will be honoured with
certificates and medals as a token of appreciation during the event. “We’ll recognise the role of only 16 of the boxing greats because of financial constraints. Otherwise, we would have liked to honour more,” said Mbekisa without mentioning the names of those that Bees Boxing Club will honour. He said, “By doing this we are trying to send a strong message to the metro municipality that it is time that we honour those who entertained us in the ring and remained our true ambassadors of the sport especially during the dark days of apartheid.” The weigh-in will start at 8am followed by match-making, then the first bout around 10am. Mbekisa said junior-boxers will pay R2 for the scale and seniors R3. Admission for the show is R5 and there will be DJs to entertain the crowds with thumping music.
