Bay boxing glory revived with title fight NCEBA DLADLA

T

HE fourround heavyweight bout between Port Eli-zabeth pugilists Lesley Hope and Renier Strydom at the Walmer High School Hall in Gqeberha this Sunday (June 16) not only has all the ingredients of a war of attrition but is also bringing the metro a step closer to reviving its former boxing glory. It will be a professional debut for the duo and there is a lot at stake as this bout has been declared an elimination for the Eastern Cape Title. “Because of the scarcity of heavier fighters in the province, the winner of this bout could be challenging

Lesley Hope aka “The Rock”. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

for the provincial title,” said Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. And both boxers want to stake a claim at the ultimate prize, arguing that they are the best.

The duo are former friends and stablemates at Billy Louw’s gym in Sydenham. But since they signed the contract to fight in the undercard of Sibongile Nkebe’s bill, there is no love lost between them. Hope who is known as “The Rock” is still with Louw while Strydom is currently under the tutelage of Shane Marshall at Cat Skills Boxing Club in Swartkops. The latter is known by the moniker, “Man of Faith”. He believes he’s got the artillery to break Hope’s plans of a crack at the title. “This is not a game, this is a fight. I am going to show Lesley ‘Hopeless’ what it is to be a heavyweight boxer. He has got no chance! He has insulted me by signing to fight against me. I’m going to make him feel the pain,” said Strydom who turned professional last year but was never fortunate to lace-up a glove as a pro. “I am happy I signed the contract. I’m not scared of Renier (Strydom). I hear there is a lot of talk, but come the fight we’ll get it out. My father never raised cowards. This fight means a lot to me. I train hard and fight easy. They don’t call me The Rock for nothing,” said Hope. “The boy is ready to rumble. I tell you now, there could be blood in the ring on the day as there is bad blood between the two boxers,” said Billy Louw. “We’ve worked so hard for the fight. We eat, talk and sleep boxing so Hope won’t last the distance,” said Marshall. “The return of white boxers to the sport is a good thing; we appreciate it. Whites have been out of the game for some time here. As a country we could not relax with only one colour involved - in any code,” said Mapitiza. He added, “Unlike their black counterparts, white boxers bring families, friends, colleagues and fans to the venues and that is a good marketing tool for any sport.”

Prospective entrepreneurs helped with business tools NCEBA DLADLA CENSUS 2011 portrayed South Africa as a youthful nation with the average age of the population at 25 years and a third of the 52 million population under the age of 15 years. A youthful nation is generally regarded as a positive development. The unemployment statistics of the youth, however, which is estimated to be about 4,4 million people, are cause for very serious concern.

It is against this backdrop that Absa Group Limited (Absa Bank) organised an entrepreneurship workshop at the Radison Blu Hotel in Summerstrand last Thursday to benefit about 150 young people (aged between 14 and 35 years) from across the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro. According to Absa Eastern Cape Communication Manager Cathy Schwarz, the campaign, which is called “Unlocking Youth Potential”, was one of several employee volunteering opportunities supported by Absa in the country and Barclays Bank in the rest of Africa.

It was premised on Barclay’s commitment which is underpinned by a sense of business purpose - to help individuals, communities, businesses and economies progress and grow. “We believe that the future success of our communities and the economies in which we operate rely on this next generation having the right skills to fulfil its potential, ” said Schwarz, adding that the initiative empowered the youth with skills necessary to achieve financial and economic independence, as well as a sense of security. The youths, who were identified through

Absa Enterprise Development, participated in the three-hour coaching and knowledge sharing session which provided insights and advice on how to start, run and grow a small business, thanks to a programme developed by Junior Achievement, an NGO on youth entrepreneurship. Port Elizabeth entrepreneurs Boom Town Advertising and Marketing CEO, Neil Hart and Rachel Deli, Managing Member of Masiye Mzantsi Travel Agency provided practical insights into the actual entrepreurship journey and inspired would-be entrepreneurs to take action.

R20 000 reward for info on torching of councillor’s house and vehicle MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in the Eastern Cape are offering a R20 000 reward to anyone who can assist with information leading to the arrest and possible conviction of perpetrators who maliciously damaged a car belonging to Councillor Aaron Nyikilana and assaulted him. It is alleged that Nelson Mandela Bay Ward 54 Cllr.Nyikilana’s twin-cab bakkie was petrolbombed while it was parked outside his Violet Street house in NU11 Motherwell on 6th April 2013. The councillor was forced to flee as he was allegedly assaulted when he tried to intervene, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. “The bakkie’s damage is estimated to be R300 000,” said W/O Gwavu.

It is further alleged, according to Gwavu, that the house belonging to the same councillor Nyikilana was petrol bombed by a group of people on 7 May this year. Damages this time were estimated at R150 000. According to W/O Gwavu, a task team that was established to investigate these attacks did not yield results and now the police need community assistance. “A reward of up to R20 000 will be issued to anyone who can assist the police with information that may lead to the arrest and successful conviction of the perpetrators,” said Gwavu. Those with info can contact Detective Warrant Officer Riaan Steyn of Motherwell Police Station at 0 041 405 6504 or 0 082 657 0447. – NCEBA

Metro adopts a ‘pro-poor’ budget to fast-track service delivery NCEBA DLADLA

N

ELSON Mandela Bay Municipality approved what it called the pro-poor 2013/2014 budget on Friday 7 June.

The R8,6 billion budget, which comprises a R1,1 billion capital budget and an operating budget of R7,5 billion, will be effective from 1 July.

Though the budget reflected tariff increases in property rates, water, sanitation, refuse and electricity, all political parties represented in council agreed that the budget as well as the Integrated Development Plan (IDP) would serve the interests of the poor members of Nelson Mandela Bay communities, according to acting Communications Director, Martie Nel. Budget and Treasury Portfolio Chairperson

Councillor Balu Naran called the budget “austere and prudent.” He added that it was “unashamedly and unapologetically pro-poor” - something the municipality needed in pursuance of its mandate of redressing the imbalances and injustices of the past suffered by the broad majority of the people. “It was clear to the leadership that this budget must be allocated to further transform

the face of Nelson Mandela Bay, improve service delivery to our residents, enhance the quality of their lives, and restore their dignity,” said Naran. The focus of the budget is on human settlements, water services, sanitation, electricity and energy. A large sum of the amount is to address the bucket system by building toilets and replacing the sewerage system, according to Nel.

Older women ‘graduate’ with empowering new skills ILSE KRIGE WITH beaming faces and the notes of the famous “Gaudeamus Igitur” some 40 senior citizens from all the townships of Port Elizabeth “graduated” on May 30.

Matizole Gwaxula, co-founder of the Ubuntu training centre in Zwide, said this group received training in cookery, crocheting, knitting and beading, as well as computer technology. “When we work with the children at the centre, we also befriend the older folk. We want these women to become economically productive, rather than sitting at home unemployed.” Nomalanga Lamani (63) said the training had opened doors for her. “I can now start my own business with beading and other crafts. I am so grateful towards Ubuntu. My granddaughters also come to the centre after school. They receive food here and also learn skills.” Nomawonga Goduka (58), her classmate, beamed with pride. “I am a different person! I learnt so many skills, and best of all is the computer knowledge. Now I can join in the conversation when my children or grandchildren sit in front of the computer. “My family, who were all present to see us receive our certificates, are also proud of me.” Ongama Mtinka, the centre’s spokesperson, explained that they focus on the vulnerable people from the township. “This is an empowerment programme. We call these older persons the drop-ins, instead of the drop-outs. We already have a list of interested persons for the next course starting in June. “We want to help the graduates further through workshops in marketing and the setup of a business plan for small businesses with which they will hopefully start,” said Mtimka. For more information about the Ubuntu training centre call 0 041 409 2756. Alternatively, visit the website www.ubuntufund.org, and ubuntufund on Facebook, or follow @UbuntuFund on Twitter.

Cikizwa Saul from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth. I was diagnosed with asthma and tonsillitis when I was twelve years old. In 2009 I started experiencing backache and headaches and was later diagnosed with high blood pressure. I went to the clinic for treatment but in 2010 I overheard people in the taxi talking about Gotha products. I stopped the taxi at the Pick n Pay centre and bought Gotha spray and sprayed it on my back and rubbed it in. I also sprayed it in my mouth. At home I washed my swollen feet and sprayed my feet. Within three days I experienced no more pains and my blood pressure was normal. I advise people to buy Gotha products. They are excellent products and you will see the results. Go forward Gotha Health. I am Siphe Mfihlo from Whittlesea (Queenstown) now residing at Orange Farm (Gauteng) My situation was beyond redemption before I learned about Magogotha health products. I had exasperating stomach problems, my face was covered with something like dandruff, which was embarrassing to appear in public. I read about this Gotha health product in a newspaper and visited one of their stores where I bought Ostrich Oil Soap, Re-gen Skin Cream and Herbal Tea blend. I utilised this product for a while and within three weeks there was a massive change in my body and to my face. I value the product and I recommend it to the nation or for everyone with the same problem. Thank you for making a difference in my life and keep up the good work and for making us proud of your Gotha products.

My name is Siqhamo Mnyazi. Last year I injured my shoulder when I was playing football with friends. I experienced a lot of pain; I couldn't even sleep the first night. My radio was on Umhlobo Wenene FM and I heard about the Gotha Health products. I went to the pharmacy to buy the Magogotha twin pack. I used the Aloe spray regularly on my shoulder. It was unbelievable. Just 3 weeks and I was healed. I will suggest the Gotha products to any person with a sport injury. Gotha products work 100%. I recommend the Gotha product, thank you GOTHA HEALTH.

My name is Vuyiswa Gwaqu from Siya Street, Joe Slovo in Port Elizabeth. One day I was cleaning my yard, when I felt a sharp pain in my spinal cord. The doctors diagnosed me with stress, arthritis and tonsillitis. It was very painful. I heard people talking about Gotha Products on the radio and early the next morning I took a taxi to a Gotha shop in the Pick n Pay centre. I bought a Twin Pack and Aloe Spray. I used the products and after just two weeks I could see the improvement. Then my husband passed away and I didn't have enough money to buy the products. It was a very stressful time, but then I bought the Herbal Tea blend and the stress was gone. Forward Gotha! Forward. Carniboost + Hypermag - Twin pack is a

combination of Magnesium and L-Crnitine. Magnesium is an essential mineral for staying healthy, it improves muscle function and prevents insomnia, constipation, heart attacks, hypertension and migraines. L-Carnitine has been found to improve the body's ability to improve memory, increase energy, raise metabolism, and enhance overall quality of life.

Oxi-Vite is an easy way to ensure that you are getting the adequate supply of vitamins, minerals and antioxidants that you need each day. Available in adult syrup and children's syrup. Gotha Oxi-Vite has specifically been made a liquid formulation as liquid nutrients are absorbed faster and more effectively.

Eunice Tokwe from Kwazakhele in Port Elizabeth. Previously I had a job in a restaurant, but had to stop working due to my knee problem and high blood pressure. I couldn't walk for long distances and it was difficult to stand for any length of time. As time passed I heard people on the radio speaking about Gotha Twin Pack. I visited one of their branches in Dasi, accompanied by my grandchildren. They had to carry me to the top of the stairs. I bought the Twin Pack and Aloe spray. I drank the tablets and drops in the morning and applied the spray to my knee. I have been using Magogotha products now for five years and honestly, I can walk again without any assistance and I have no more pains in my knee. I do all the cleaning at home myself and there is nothing I cannot do. Furthermore, my sister had blisters on the back of her ear. I also gave her Gotha spray. Within seven days my sister was completely healed and the blisters disappeared. When I go for checkups even my high blood pressure is normal. I will use Gotha Products till the end of my life.

My name is Tornado Khetho from Lusikisiki in Ngobozana location. I injured my knee playing football with some of the guys in my community. I heard about Gotha Health. I bought the Gotha spray and Gotha soap. Within three days my knee was better. Go gotha Magogotha, your products are something to be proud of. Thanks Gotha health.

Aloe spray is rapidly absorbed and acts as an anti-inflammatory agent. Aloe spray can help relieve pain, diminish swelling, encouraging healing and restoring normal cell function. Can also be used for the relief of minor burns and sprains, sports injuries and arthritis.

Bay residents on mother tongue teaching Nelson Mandela Bay residents told PE Express Indaba reporter, Nceba Dladla their views on the Minister’s call on their children’s education MINISTER of Basic Education Angie Motshekga has announced that children will be taught in their mother tongue from Grade R to Grade 3 from the 2014 academic year, and then take English as the Language of Teaching and Learning from Grade 4 upwards. ) Prince Mbambaza of Motherwell loves the idea. He said, “It’s a good idea. I love it. Our children fail because they do not learn in their home language. In their own

language they will get the right foundation and excel in education. I like what KZN does; children there are taught in isiZulu until they go to university. That is a good way to promote our own language.” ) “I say no! A child will struggle to speak English if teaching will be in mother tongue. Just imagine when they watch programmes broadcast in English on television and they don’t understand,” said Zandile Kana of KwaNobuhle, adding that those who can’t speak proper English be-
