Residents unite to bury girl NCEBA DLADLA

C

OMMUNITY members last week united to help the distraught father of a young girl, who was presumably murdered, to give her a decent burial. The Mother’s Gift, a NPO from KwaNobuhle, joined forces with a local funeral undertaker and caring residents to bury Amahle Dastile (17) whose body was found five days after she went missing on December 22. She was returning from a trip in Cape Town and was not seen since. According to police spokesperson Lt Col. Priscilla Naidu, Asemahle’s decomposed body was found on December 27 in a church yard in Matshaka Street. Police established her identity at the end of January. Her father German Dastile (69), who is unemployed, could not afford to have her buried. Mother’s Gift volunteers Marinda Swaartbooi, Beaula Ndi-

ka, Siphokazi Mzimane and Nomvuselelo Zamxaka as well as community leader Nontuthuzelo Skweyiya learnt about the family’s struggle and decided to help them give her a decent burial. “But what struck us the most was the abject poverty in the RDP house. A lot needed to be done there,” said Mama Sheila Isaacs, founder and head of the Mother’s Gift. Mama Sheila’s husband Dr Frank Isaacs started the ball rolling with a R1 000 donation, the volunteers offered money, started buying the family food, painted the house and put in carpets. They cooked and served mourners with meals during the funeral. Mama Sheila thanked Intsik’eQhagqiwa Funeral Undertakers boss Zwai Nyiki who was touched by the plight of the family and offered a free service. “I want to thank these people who helped me whilst I was in the dark cloud. They lifted a heavy load from my shoulders,” said Dastile.

Ministers’ wives join hands to solve community problems NCEBA DLADLA THE Inter-Denominational African Ministers Wives Association of Southern Africa (IDAMWASA) is making a difference in local communities. These are the wives of Ministers belonging to different church denominations, explained IDAMWASA president Linda Jika. Mrs Jika is the wife of IDAMASA president Bishop Sandile Jika. “We started this association in order to work together as the wives of church ministers from different denominations and also to uplift one another spiritually as we continue with our different ministries,” said Mrs Jika. Every minister’s wife, according to Jika, brings to the association at least two members who serve in the church executive council to form part of the IDAMWASA Committee. This year’s Zwelonke Church service for all Churches Manyano will be held at the United Presbyterian Church in Magaba Street, Zwide Township on 7 March. “We wanted to bring unity to the church of God as well as to work together in outreach programmes dealing with the needs of the communities in which we live,” said Jika. They visit the sick in hospitals,

conduct prayers, give presents, food and joy especially to those who don’t have people to visit them. “We also visit prisons and assist in the programmes of rehabilitating offenders as well as visit places of safety and places for children with disabilities,” said Jika. She added, “We are inviting every minister’s wife from every

church denomination to join us. Even those who are not in church building structures are invited. Come, let us work together in bringing solutions to the problems faced by our communities.” The group meets every second Sunday of the month at the IDAMASA offices in Grattan Street, New Brighton, Port Elizabeth from 3pm.

State of the Nation address broadcast live NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay residents will have an opportunity to view on a big screen the State of the Nation Address (SONA) which president Jacob Zuma will be delivering to the nation tomorrow (Thursday 14 February). The broadcast will take place at the Hoza Community Hall in New Brighton. There will also be robust post-address communication with various activations that include debate over the pressing issues in the

community, said GCIS Spokesperson Portia Mlisa. “We have invited an ANC regional executive official to summarise president Zuma’s address for the communities and what it means in addressing their immediate problems,” said Mlisa, adding that other political parties were also invited to share their thoughts. According to Mlisa, unemployment and crime were highlighted as serious problems facing the New Brighton community. Mlisa said members of the South African Police Service (SAPS), Crime Prevention Unit (CPU) and the Community Police Forum (CPF) will also be part of this programme aimed at

community participation to influence government’s programme of action. “There will also be other government department officials to respond to some of the questions relating specifically to their departments,” Mlisa told PE Express Indaba. There will be a door-to-door campaign in the ward from today (Wednesday) and residents are encouraged to take part in the SONA activities, said Mlisa. Tomorrow (Thursday) at 10am the GCIS officials will be at Shoprite Shopping Centre in New Brighton again encouraging people not only to know about the SONA, but also to take part in the deliberations.

Twenty years jail for robbery NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth man Siphamandla (Mbem) Kameni (21) was sentenced to 20 years imprisonment by a Port Elizabeth Magistrate Court last Tuesday after he was found guilty on two

charges of robbery with aggravated circumstances, attempted murder and robbery. On Sunday 15 May 2011 at 11.15pm, Kameni allegedly robbed the complainant and his two friends of their cellular phones and stabbed the second friend of the complainant, said Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile

Gwavu. Kameni also took the man’s tracksuit top. “This sends out a strong message that those who commit crime will always end up in a place where they do not want to be; and that they must stop doing crime,” said W/O Gwavu.

Mandela Bay fans enjoyed Afcon NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay elite football lovers watched the 29th Orange Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) eight matches played at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium with excitement and glee. PE Express Indaba spoke to a few of the fans about their experience of this African showpiece spectacular as Mali trounced Ghana 3-1 during the semi-finals losers competition for the third place on Saturday. Friends Vukile Maseti and Vusumzi Daniels both of KwaNobuhle watched all the matches and found the experience very good. “We also learnt something from our African brothers and sisters; fans do not boo and discourage their team even if it’s not doing well. Players need motivating and support,” said the duo who also wished they could travel to Gauteng to watch the final at Soccer City on Sunday. Zoliswa Mahlakahlaka of New Brighton, Nopinki Diko, Asanda Rasmeni and Babalwa Diko all of Walmer said they missed one match and were happy to have watched at least seven. “The vibe is less today perhaps because Bafana Bafana is out of the competition, otherwise the experience has been good,” said Zoliswa. Though Asanda is not a soccer fanatic, she confessed to have been hooked by Afcon and loved watching the games live. Said Nopinki: “Mzantsi fans

Soccer lovers Zamikhaya Kalmashe, Andrew Mhlauli and Mzwamadoda Tulwana of KwaNobuhle watched and enjoyed all matches.

Motherwell friends Sindile Danster, Mphumzi Kampeni, Luvuyo Mpi and Bongolwetu Harmans who also saw the last match live were also ecstatic and so was KwaNobuhle friends Zamikhaya Kalmashe, Andrew Mhlauli and Mzwamadoda Tulwana.

Pack a Picnic for Concert in the Park Pursuing Arts set on EASTERN Cape-born crooner, Zwai Bala, and glamorous songstress, Naz Holland, will feature as guest artists at this year’s Concert in the Park with the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra on Saturday, February 16, at 5pm and Sunday, February 17, at 10am.

chasing their dream ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

SEVEN creative young people from the Eastern Cape were scouted recently and chosen to showcase their talent in the United States of America. The group, called “Pursuing Arts” consists of Anele Ngcizela, Qaqamba Ngwenze, Marguerite Curtain, Raquel Andrea De Doncker, Gino Lee, Jason Jonkers and Owen Louis. They range from singers, models and actors to dancers. “We are all artists in our own right. In 2012 all seven of us were each individually scouted by the owner of Just-You model and talent management Elsubie De Lange, to audition in Johannesburg, Monte Casino at her arts showcase for Kim Napier Myers, who is an international scout from America. Some of us were also scouted by Juanita Smit from Role Models South Africa,” explained Gino Lee. At that showcase they were all scouted by Kim Napier Myers from over 200 other actors, models, singers and dancers to audition at her international

South Africa’s favourite conductor Richard Cock will be back in his home town to direct the 2013 Concert in the Park, which is held in association with Algoa FM. In 2012, Algoa FM and the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra hosted thousands of music lovers at the popular outdoor event, and it is expected to be even more popular this year. Guest artist Zwai Bala is one of the Eastern Cape’s most successful exports, having made his name as a singer, songwriter, producer, arranger, performing artist, DJ and TV personality. The vivacious and vocally gifted Naz Holland has produced five number 1 hits in South Africa. “This family-orientated event provides a high standard of musical talent in an amazing atmosphere under the Nelson Mandela Bay skies,” said Dave Tiltmann, Managing Director of Algoa FM. Tickets will be available at the Victoria Park gates and cost R80 for adults, R60 for pensioners and R30 for scholars (pre-schoolers are free).

showcase called The ARTS (Applause Rising Talent Showcase). The ARTS will give them the opportunity to audition in Orlando, Florida for over 100 international scouts and agents from media schools and companies such as Disney Hollywood Studios, VH1, Boom model agency, Tyler Perry Productions, Interscope Records, Sony BMG, New York Film Academy and others. “We are now ambassadors of the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan on an international level and we hope to make our home city very proud,” Gino Lee added. As there are costs involved in going to the showcase in Orlando, the artists have decided to come together and work as a unit and have thus formed the Arts group “Pursuing Arts”, to get sponsors and raise funds which will help them realize their dreams. . Watch the PE Express Facebook page for updates on Pursuing Arts and their fundraising efforts.

Book fair to boost published and unpublished authors NCEBA DLADLA A BOOK Fair will be held at the PE Opera House from March 14 to 16 to create a platform for local writers, book sellers, publishers and government to meet and discuss pertinent issues regarding publishing and distribution of books in the country. This annual literary event is organised with the support of the national Department of Arts and Culture, Ikhwelo Writing Initiative, a group of Nelson Mandela Bay metro writers as well as a registered metro NGO, Imbizo Arts. Celebrated authors and luminaries like Don Mattera, Ntsiki Mzwai Andile Mngxitama, and Mzi Mahola will also attend the event. “We want published local writers to come and distribute their books and those still with manuscripts to come and look for publishing opportunities,” said event coordinator Mxolisi Nyezwa. Nyezwa, who resides in New Brighton and who has already authored

three books and won an Award, has confirmed that Lovedale Press Publishing Company will be attending. “The main aim of the event is to motivate writers to continue writing. We’ll discuss topics like how to go about publishing your work, copyright and payments of royalties among others,” said Nyezwa. “We’d also like to invite students and learners from the metro to come and participate as some of the 70 poets and writers who will attend the fair will be giving motivational talks, writing workshops and information on careers in books and publishing,” said Mangaliso Buzani, another author from New Brighton. He added that the fair will kick-off with a children’s programme on March 14.

UITENHAGE Arts and Cultural Organisation (UACO) invites arts and cultural practitioners to a general meeting to be held at Uitenhage Town Hall on Saturday 16 February from 11 am. The UACO is an organisation set up by artists residing in Uitenhage to develop arts and cultural outreach projects with the aim of empowering local communities, said UACO chairman Martin Pram. Pram noted with appreciation that Uitenhage, one for the oldest towns in the country, has in the years been

a great contributor to the sports, music, arts technicians and the general workforce similar to other great cities of the world. “Art in our communities is celebrated, lived, revered and remembered; it is about our history and heritage,” said Pram. According to Pram, dancers, drama and theatre actors, film and video producers, graphic designing and visual and fine arts specialists were expected to attend the meeting. The plan is for UACO to work together with the Department of Education in the District to initiate school-based programmes for the benefit of the youth.

NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth amateur boxing is on the rise, according to Ibhayi Amateur Boxing Organisation Chairman Caiphus Ntante. Ntante was speaking to PE Express Indaba during the Ibhayi amateur boxing tournament held at Swartkops Hotel last Saturday. Eight clubs, three from the traditionally white suburbs, two from Joe Slovo, two from Veeplaas and one from Zwide participated in the tournament organised by the newly elected zonal structure that Ntante chairs. Other office bearers are Mzukisi Oliphant (deputy chairperson), Bulelani Jibiliza (secretary), Sigqibo Ndoya (vice secretary), Mlungi-

si Oliphant (treasurer) and Zukiswa Mashelele (PRO). Ntante said they are attempting to revive the sport in the area and follow in the footsteps of areas like Motherwell and Uitenhage where there is so much amateur boxing activity almost every week. “Motherwell and Uitenhage zones have very solid amateur boxing structures that are very active - they organise fights almost every week,” said Ntante. He said the main aim is to harness and develop Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Municipality boxing. A boxing tournament featuring all the zones will be held at Terminus near NU9 Spa this Saturday starting at 12 noon.

Maritzburg United vs Sundowns on Friday NCEBA DLADLA FOOTBALL lovers in Nelson Mandela Bay who have already been spoiled with eight of the Orange Africa Cup of Nations (Afcon) matches have another elite football game to look forward to this Friday. Maritzburg United will be playing against Mamelodi Sundowns in a Professional Soccer League (PSL) match starting at 8pm at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium. Currently standing at number five on the log United, otherwise known as The Team of Choice, had an opening come-back game

(since Afcon) in a derby against Amazulu at Moses Mabhida Stadium last night while the Brazilians (Sundowns) who are 10th on the log challenged the log leaders Kaizer Chiefs. Depending on what happened in those two games Ernst Middendorp’s boys will depend on the scoring abilities of Cuthbert Malajila (currently with eight goals) and the experience of Michael Morton and Ruben Cloete. The Brazilians, on the other hand, who have been injected with much inspiration and vooma since being joined by former Bafana Bafana coach, Pitso Mosimane, will pin their hopes on stars like Katlego Mphela, Teko Modise and Surprise Moriri. eksklusief aanlyn by

Call to revive and develop Nelson Mandela Bay amateur boxing

The school from the disadvantaged community of Walmer/Gqebera received soccer, rugby, athletics and netball kits including balls, shin-pads and other relevant sporting equipment from the Cape Town-based club, thanks to the owner Chippa Mpengesi’s love for sports development at grassroots level. The management of the team, coach Wilfred Mugeyi, the technical team and the players visited the school to deliver the sporting regalia to the ecstatic boys and girls in the presence of staff, members of the School Governing Body, Ward Councillor Nomajama Benya, Department of Sport’s Nelson Mandela Bay Assistant Manager Mwelase Mboxela and former rugby springbok Makhaya Jack, among other dignitaries. “This is a matter of charity which begins at home for the club’s chairman (Mpengesi) who hails from the Eastern

Cape,” said club spokesperson Lukhanyo Mzinzi. Mpengesi, who could not be present owing to other club commitments, has promised to bring at least seven of the club’s home matches to this province next season. Said Mzinzi, “We are also sending a strong message to the youth that one should not forget where one is coming from; but also that where you are does not necessarily translate to where you’ll end.” An overwhelmed school principal Zukiswa Maku thanked the club for their good gesture and added that it was going to make a huge impact as the children of the school, who mainly came from very poor backgrounds, loved sports. “Sports help children to develop fully, so I believe this gesture is going to help our children to do well even in their academic endeavours. “There is a lot of talent in our township so we are hoping to develop more sports starts,” enthused Maku. Councillor Benya also raised hopes that the sport kit would encourage more sports activism among the youth and take them away from alcohol, drug abuse and crime.
