AmaRarabe Queen visits Mandela Bay NCEBA DLADLA QUEEN JN Sandile, Aahh! Noloyiso the wife of the late AmaRarabe King Maxhob’ayakhawuleza Sandile will be visiting Nelson Mandela Bay from today, Wednesday August 14, until Friday. The visit by the Queen and her entourage, which includes Prince Zolile Burns-Ncamashe, is regarded as an honour as much as it is history in the making for the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. “In her three-day visit to the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, the Queen will be meeting the municipal leadership, corporate as well as traditional leadership which includes the Khoi-San in the Sara Baartman District Municipality, otherwise known as Cacadu District Municipality,” said Nelson Bay Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. In her itinerary today, the Queen and members of the traditional leadership will visit the Coega IDZ and Volkswagen SA as well as heritage sites like eMlotheni Memorial, the Red Location Museum, where some of the amaRarabe history is stored, and the graves

of political icons and freedom fighters, Oom Govan Mbeki and Oom Ray Mhlaba. The Queen, who is the daughter of His Majesty King Cyprian kaBhekuzulu, will also stop at the Bantu Church of Christ in New Brighton to meet the leader of the church, Bishop John Bolana, and his wife. “The Queen’s meeting with traditional leadership is expected to be held at the Nangoza Jebe Community hall in New Brighton on Friday,” said Mniki. At the time of going to press, however, they were still refining the actual times of the visits. He said Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality regards the visit by the Queen and her entourage as a big honour bestowed on the metro. According to Mniki, in these times of drugabuse, gender-based violence and early childhood pregnancy, kingship and traditional leadership should always be respected for rearing children with family values, education, ethics and morality. “If you look at history, many residents in and around Gqeberha, iQhagqiwa and up to iCacadu are amaRarabe and subjects of the Queen, Aahh Noloyiso!,” said Mniki, adding that the youth would learn a lot from the Queen’s visit to the metro.
All around the country Matrics are exchanging their uniforms for beautiful evening gowns and suits as they say goodbye to their school years before the hard studying for the final exams start. PE Express Indaba shared this special evening in a person’s life with Kaylene Stuurman of Cillie High School. Read more on page 6 of this week’s edition.

Ubuntu makes big impression on former president Clinton INDABA REPORTER UBUNTU Education Fund, a non-profit organization based in Zwide Township in Port Elizabeth, welcomed President Bill Clinton and Chelsea Clinton and a press delegation to its world-class health and educational complex last Tuesday. The delegation visited the Ubuntu Centre, a Clinton Global Initiative (CGI) Commitment to Action site, to learn about the organization’s innovative cradle to career model, which is transforming the lives of 2 000 children and their families. The Clintons’ trip to Africa focused on Foundation projects that are successfully promoting economic growth, community empowerment, and access to quality healthcare in Malawi, Zambia, Tanzania and Zanzibar, Rwanda, and South Africa. At Ubuntu, President Clinton spoke with Zethu Ngceza, a former Ubuntu student and current staff member who also spoke at the 2007 CGI Mid-Year Meeting regarding childheaded households. When they last met in New York City, Zethu was 16 years old, balancing her responsibilities taking care of her younger siblings with her schoolwork. After learning that she had graduated from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2012, President Clinton said, “I am so proud of you.” He turned to the surrounding Ubuntu staff, announcing, “Ubuntu has come so far. We’re very proud of your work. This is an amazing organization that actually ensures its people are taken care of.” The Clintons met Ubuntu’s staff and stu-
dents, spoke to the organization’s doctor about its new prenatal care unit, and discussed educational opportunities with Ubuntu’s early childhood development and afterschool program teachers. The Clintons also met several students enrolled in the Ubuntu Scholars program, which helps place young adults in higher education and employment. “The Ubuntu model is incredible - you start early and work with a child for his or her entire life” said Chelsea Clinton, “I can see your scholars are where they are today because of all you provide for them.”
Yesterday, the delegation, along with Zethu Ngceza of Ubuntu, participated in an interactive global conversation, Embrace Tomorrow, at The Nelson Mandela Centre of Memory in Pretoria. Exemplifying the success of Ubuntu’s comprehensive model, Zethu shared her story, highlighting the organization’s ability to effect lasting change in South African townships. “Too many improvements in South Africa right now are for those who have the most. If we want a better tomorrow, we need to think about those who have the least. That is what the Ubuntu Model is all about.” Zethu said.

Workshop to empower women NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE’S Phaphani Rape Crisis will hold an all-women empowerment session at the Lovelife Youth Centre in Tize Street on Tuesday, August 20. It’s starting at 11am. “This month of August we’d like to pay tribute to ordinary women who have made strides in leadership positions in their households and community,” said Phaphani Rape Crisis Director Nocawa Sinam. She said they were hoping to help divorcees, single and unemployed women find purpose in life, to start small businesses, form cooperatives and live independent
lives. According to Sinam, there are many unsung heroines in KwaNobuhle, who own fruit and vegetable stands for instance, and who educate their children to become lawyers, doctors and chartered accountants. “We want them to motivate others not to lose hope. We’d like them to say to others, it does not help to wait for a government grant or food parcels. We must learn to do things to help give our homes warmth and help our communities grow,” said Sinam, adding that they had also invited officials from the Departments of Social Development, Health and Justice and from business and church to give motivational talks.

Future looks bright for young pioneers NCEBA DLADLA THEY were previously unemployed and loitering in the streets without hope. But now, thanks to the Department of Social Develop-
ment’s Young Pioneers Programme, they are not only earning an income in the form of a monthly stipend, but also a whole lot of experience needed in the workplace. “I was unemployed but now I am getting work experience,
and the monthly stipend we receive makes a difference,” said Unathi Mselana (24) from Soweto-On-Sea. “The programme helps us know about the
developments in our areas and the metro. We’re very fortunate to be getting this opportunity,” said Babalwa Ndamane (23) from Veeplaas. Provincial Social Development Department spokesperson Gcobani Maswana said these young people were part of the national government’s initiative known as Masupatsela Young Pioneers Programme. “We have identified information gaps between the state and the communities. This programme assists us not only to disseminate information about the communities’ needs for service delivery, but in the long term, to ensure that that information is sent to relative departments for a speedy response,” said Maswana. According to Maswana, when the youth pioneers profile a home and find an old person without an Identity Document (ID) for instance, they help the person get the ID through the Department of Home Affairs and if they should be receiving an old age pension, they take the information to his Department and SASSA for a pension payout. With information received, social workers do an assessment for a social grant if and when there is a need. “The programme has helped government know more about the needs of the communities and has found better ways to respond speedily and efficiently to those. We have also learnt a great deal from this programme,” said Maswana, adding that the youth themselves got an opportunity to serve their communities, get working experience and improve their chances of employability. PE EXPRESS INDABA SALUTES WOMEN WHO MAKE A DIFFERENCE
ANC Councillor leads by example NCEBA DLADLA ANC Ward 28 Councillor Buyelwa Mafaya is regarded as a hard worker, a mother-figure and an honest cadre of the movement. This Women’s Month, PE Express Indaba pays tribute to this political leader, businesswoman and mother of three daughters. Mafaya (45) has been an active member of the branch and rose through the ranks from being secretary in 1997 to the Elections Fund-raising Committee official who also served in the REC of the Women’s League. Mafaya is an ANC Economic Development Regional Convenor and Whipery who currently serves as a member of the Women Caucus Steering Committee in the Council, and says she understands exactly the trust her organisation has in her as a deployee. “I was born to serve humanity and make a difference in the community,” said Mafaya, a grand-daughter of freedom fighter
Wilson Kayingo whose bones rest at Emlotheni Memorial Site in New Brighton. Wilson Kayingo was hanged for his political activism in 1964 whilst his brother JK Kayingo spent many years in Robben Island prison. Mafaya’s family has been supporting orphaned and vulnerable children in the PE community with food parcels, clothing and shoes and as a councillor she has introduced sporting tournaments to keep the youth off the streets. Mafaya is, however, not only about politics. She is a National African Federated Chamber of Commerce (Nafcoc) Provincial Treasurer who looks after SMME Development in various sectors. She has had an interest in business while growing up in Zwide and she and her husband, Gcobani Mafaya, own Melisizwe Construction. Asked if she was not finding it difficult mixing business and politics, she retorted,
“I wouldn’t call it mixing the two necessarily. To me, one needs to understand the two in order to make them complement each other. Furthermore, one needs to understand the business of politics and the politics of business in order to succeed.” Family life is also important to her and despite her busy schedule she finds time to juggle all her roles and find quality time as a wife and mother to three girls, Abongile, Gcobisa and Buhle. “She is the first woman councillor in the ward and as a branch we’re very proud of the strides she has taken since June 2011,” said ANC Branch Chairperson Mthetheleli Rasmeni, adding there are numerous projects that have emerged under her watch. These include the building of over 750 RDP houses, the construction of Sakuba Road and other roads. ANC ward 28 Branch Organiser Faku Mthandana said, “We are lucky to have her. She has a good heart.”

Elderly call on municipality to honour their rights THAMSANQA MBOVANE MOTHER of former South African cricket CEO, Gerald Majola, Jumartha Majola (81), who is the founder of New Brighton’s Hoza Golden Age, has vowed that she would not throw in the towel in the fight to keep her organisation going. This is despite her having to operate her elderly club in a container whereas there are many unused buildings and “bars”

around the City. Hoza Golden Age is an NGO with 40 old person as members. Jumartha was speaking last Friday at a Women’s Day celebration held at the DDT Jabavu High in NU5 in Motherwell. The event, organized by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality in conjunction with LoveLife, was attended by ward councillors, municipal officials, and dozens of representatives from various NGOs. It was held in celebration of multitudes of different women from different back-
grounds who marched to the Union Buildings on 9 August to protest against pass laws, and to speak about their challenges. Speaking at the event where she was guest speaker, Majola said those who control this City have put older persons in the “back seat”. “I am glad that I have been given the opportunity by the municipality to speak out about what has been eating me”, she said. “We have toured big places through the support of Age In Action. We have also attended seven conferences and have realized
that other Cities are progressing, whilst our own Metro is burning. We’ve been to Durban, Johannesburg, Cape Town, seeing big infrastuctural buildings donated by the municipalities. However, when we return from these places, we feel embarrassed about our own City. “Today, I declare that it is against womens’s rights that 40 old person operate in a container. We also have rights! Our own city is not doing what those who control it are saying they’re doing! Why can’t we do what other cities do for the elderly pesons?” she asked.

Instead, she said, they were inspired by the very poor conditions from which they came, to better their lives and that of the communities from which they came. Said Speelman, “Education is the only way in which we can break the cycle of poverty in our communities. And, in our very small way, we believe that through this initiative, our communities will become a better place to live in.”

Fairytale farewell for stylish Kaylene THAMSANQA MBOVANE GORGEOUS matric girl Kaylene Stuurman might be unknown in celebrity circles, but when she stepped outside her Wells Estate home last Thursday afternoon, while a grand car was awaiting her to take her to her glittering matric farewell dance, she took the limelight and turned heads. It was raining, but when she set foot on the tarred street, the heavy rain took a pause! Kaylene, 18, was about to join 80 fellow Cillie High school matric couples for the party which was held at the Running Waters hall in Kragga Kamma.
She said since she was single, she chose a “special man,” her cousin, Jason Cemoette (23) to accompany her. Jason finished matric in 2011 at Andrew Rabie High Her Durban-based father, Gavin, forked out R1 500 for her dress, R500 for her shoes, and R750 for her hair and this, she said, was just a tip of the iceberg. “‘My dad also funded my own after party with catering and drinks. The party was held at my home after the matric party. He has boosted both my confidence and self- esteem. My mother passed away in 2004, but my father has been caring for me. I will also not let him down in the matric exams,” said Kaylene. .

Initiative helps poor children with their schooling NCEBA DLADLA LIFE will never be the same for at least 18 children coming from the disadvantaged community and pupils of Kama Combined School in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth. Last Friday these children received school-uniforms, shoes and groceries from the Community Health and Welfare Initiative, a Non Profit-making Organisation (NPO) based at Tshangana Street, also in New Brighton. “Poverty is the main problem facing our school. Many of our children lack concentration during lessons because they are hungry. Some come to school having not eaten anything since the previous day,” said acting school principal Veliswa Gantana. With the help of Learner Support Agent (LSA) Joy Lubambo, a teacher at the school and Administration Clerk Wendy Ncalu, an elated Gantana said they were able to get the number required by the NPO to get the relief. “We made sure that we get numbers from each class, from Grade R to Grade 6 for uniforms and up to Grade 7 for groceries. But we have many needy children at the school,” said Lubambo.
This relief was however highly appreciated by parents who were also present at the school during the handover. “I am so happy and excited for my child Lwazi in Grade 6 who will have a school uniform and look like other children at school,” said Funeka Ndamase (46) a parent. “A heavy load has been taken off our shoulders. I am happy and relieved for this gesture by the donors. I want to thank them,” said unemployed Mthuthuzeli Nombewu whose child Mhlalutyi (in Grade 5) received the assistance. “We are also happy we have made a difference. The reason we started this initiative was exactly that – to alleviate poverty that is ravaging communities and especially orphaned and vulnerable children as a result of HIV/Aids.” said Community Health and Welfare Initiative Treasurer Phindiwe Vukemini. Through the funding they received from the Social Development Department, Vukemini said they were able to buy uniforms, shoes and groceries for children at Kama, Pendla, Stephen Mazungula, Inkqubela and Seyisi Primary Schools. Vukemini said the Community Health and Welfare Initiative was soon hoping to visit Phillip Nikiwe and eBongweni Primary Schools to do the same.
Voice search auditions at Opera House NCEBA DLADLA MUSICALLY gifted school-children will have an opportunity to showcase their talent when the PE Opera House starts its Voice-Search auditions next week. The PE Opera House has already appointed three adjudicators who will be going out to schools around Nelson Mandela Bay to search for musically talented school children who otherwise would not get an opportunity to show their mettle, said PE Opera House Music Director Thobela Fibi. Individual singers of any musical genre in Grades 8 and 9 will qualify for the auditions. The initiative known as Udumo is the idea of the PE Opera House General Manager Monde Ngonyama to help the youth of Nelson Mandela Bay to shine. Through this project, Ngonyama wants prospective young stars to follow their dreams. Said Ngonyama, “We have established the concept
based on the old television musical series “Fame” where school children sing their hearts out for glory. We want to identify and nurture abundant talents that’s lying dormant out there.” Only adults get the chance to show their talents through jazz and other music festivals, according to Ngonyama. The TV music search Idols, he added, did not give Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape children space to shine so Udumo will be providing a much-needed platform to unearth God-given talent. “We’re still negotiating with schools and hope to start the auditions from August 19,” said Fibi. The finals will be held at the PE Opera House on Friday 20 September. “We’ll choose a top three to get big prizes on offer, but the top 12 finalists will get vocal training from an NMMU graduate and Vocal Specialist Makhaya Msizi. “These are the children we’ll utilise if and when there is a need for polished voices coming out of Mandela Bay,” an enthusiastic Ngonyama said.

Searching is on for the Great Rugby Fan during Springbok Test Rugby Games NCEBA DLADLA A New initiative called “Fan of the Match” has been introduced to encourage South African rugby fans to keep up with changing times, thanks to the partnership between SA Rugby Union (SARU) and Vaseline Men, the proud skincare sponsor of the Springboks. The launch of the campaign for the great rugby fan which will run throughout the Castle Rugby Championship home tests, to keep the game tidy, both off and on the field, starts between South Africa and Argentina at Soccer City Stadium in Johannesburg today (Wedensday) 17 August. In keeping with the commemoration of the Nelson Mandela Sports Day, the campaign will officially launch is today in a test between these two great rugby playing countries. The key objective is to celebrate and reward SA rugby fans who have respect for the game, the opposition and other support-
ers, and who show good sportsmanship in the stadium. “We’re launching the Fan of The Match campaign for two reasons, firstly to promote responsible behaviour off the field so that live games can be enjoyed by everyone and not only a select few,” said Vaseline Brand Manager Ryan Gosling, adding that the second reason was to find a way to meet the marketing objectives while giving back to the community. Fans will take a quick 5-question survey to determine what type of fan they are and pledge their support to tackle dirty play off the field. Anyone who completes the short survey and pledges to uphold the Fan of The Match Values will automatically be entered into a draw for instant prizes.
