USPENDED Cosatu secretary general Zwelinzima Vavi received a hearty welcome and loud applause when he addressed a jam-packed Nangoza Jebe Hall in New Brighton, Port Elizabeth, on Monday evening.

Forming what was aptly referred to as the Peoples’ Parliament by speakers, were members of Numsa, Fawu, Ceppawu Sadtu, CWU, and Denosa among other unions.

Vavi said he had come to consult the workers and the general public about the way to go in order to claim back Cosatu from “liars and thieves who were concerned only about their stomachs”.

He said all unions under Cosatu supported

Numsa. The problem, however, were the leaders who were receiving “sweet” tenders and positions of power in government.

“Those who fired Numsa (about 364 000 members) from Cosatu, and everyone else who sympathised with them were killing the union that was started by revolutionaries like Vuyisile Mini, Barayi and John Gomomo,” said Vavi.

Vavi said, the SACP under the guard of Higher Education Minister Dr Blade Nzimande was no longer the one Chris Hani led. Instead of it being the vanguard of the poor and marginalised communities, the SACP was the vanguard of parliament under Nzimande.

“We are seeing a slow-motion of the implosion of Cosatu. We have tried everything to avoid this crisis.”

The unity crisis in Cosatu, SACP, the democratic mass formations and the organs of state, Vavi said, was inevitable because of the current leadership.

According to Vavi, Cosatu had veered off the way and workers were asking themselves “Is this the freedom we were fighting for?” - as the ANC government was run by factions who were “blunting, domesticating and hollowing out domestic structures as instruments of popular power”.

He mentioned the SABC, SAA and SARS as some of the examples.

Vavi said workers had to decide their future.

Either they take the mandate of helping Cosatu to rise back to life or find an alternative.

An alternative (trade union) option for the South African working class was discussed with

much ardour as many of those present made it clear that they no longer trusted Cosatu to represent their interests.

In his synopsis of the status quo earlier, fired Numsa general secretary Irvin Jim said disillusioned South Africans should not mourn - it was time for them to act by joining the United Front.

“This is official. Identify honest and trustworthy people to represent you in the local government elections in 2016,” said Jim. Both Vavi and Jim said the country should await a call for mass action.

This would be protest marches against loadhedding, poverty, unemployment and corruption, among others.

Jim also said they were against the xenophobia that was rearing its ugly face in South Africa.

Kwazakhele residents to march tomorrow NCEBA DLADLA

A MARCH tomorrow (Thursday) has been organised by disillusioned Kwazakhele residents who demand that Sabelo Williams, a pensioner who is renowned for fighting for their housing problems, is left to work independently and peacefully in the ward office.

Hundreds of residents are expected to assemble at Sali Street at 10 am to march to the office of councillor Bongo Nombiba.

Williams, popularly known as Tshawe, his clan name, had an arrangement with Nombiba to work in his office in Sali Street every Wednesday. On this day, Nombiba works in his other office in Kwandokwenza.

According to Nombiba, the arrangement was aimed at helping Tshawe to be able to assist residents who had problems with properties as a result of the process of buying and selling of houses for R15 000.

“I saw that uMdange had passion for this and, without consulting the municipality, I opened the doors for him,” said Nombiba of Tshawe, the neighbourhood watch chairman.

Tshawe, whose services were free, was not only helping Kwazakhele residents with their housing problems. Also benefiting from his legal prowess and connections were residents from Zwide, New Brighton and Motherwell.

“When Tshawe entered into this arrangement with the councillor, there were no ward committees in place,” said Nombulelo Ncetezo, a member of the committee, adding that with a legally constituted structure in place, Tshawe was supposed to work with the ward committee - and be accountable.

When Tshawe failed to account on a matter on which he and the ward Committee did not see eye-to-eye, they had locked Tshawe out of the office and said they would open for him only when he was prepared to account.

Port Elizabeth speaks out on vandalism and removal of statues SOUTH Africans are at loggerheads about whether it is right or wrong to vandalise the statues of apartheid leaders displayed in public places.

The law is taking its own course. Port Elizabeth police spokesman Captain Sandra Janse Van Rensburg reported that a 24-year-old man had been arrested for the vandalism to the Queen Victoria statue in Port Elizabeth on April 5, but later released in court owing to insufficient evidence.

Express Indaba asked residents what they thought of the removal of the statues and they had this to say: ) “Remove all apartheid statues in public places and replace them with those of our heroes of the past. We must rewrite history for the sake of our children. Africans have kings

and queens as well as liberation heroes and heroines who deserve to be honoured,” said Andile Xoli of Port Elizabeth, adding that he had grown up learning about Jan van Riebeeck and not about the history of African leaders. ) “I want the statues of apartheid leaders removed, but there must be a more structured and organised way to do it. We must always show discipline in what we do as a nation. I don’t believe in the defacing and painting of the apartheid statues. It is wrong and must be punished by law,” said Lwandile Nokwe of Port Elizabeth. ) Lindokuhle Zicina, also of Port Elizabeth said, “Those who know politics should do as they please, but must not touch Nelson Mandela’s statue. He fought for our freedom.”

Excitement over Eastern Cape’s only ice rink REPORTER THE imminent opening of what will be the Eastern Cape’s only ice rink – in the Fun Factory zone of the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall – has skating enthusiasts, schools and families eager to hit the ice for good, clean and safe entertainment.

Dave Rodger, owner of the Ice Rink Company which will manage the operation, said that while the primary function of the rink was to provide a venue for entertainment and social activity, the secondary aim was to identify and grow skating talent within the region so that teams could be formed to put the province on the competitive ice skating map.

This, he said, could pave the way for an Eastern Province ice hockey team, as well as school teams and amateur leagues.

The rink is on track to open when Baywest Mall opens its doors on May 21.

“Our mission is to grow the number of people skating. From there it will enable the teams to identify skaters with talent,” said Rodger, whose company was formed in 1996 and owns and operates five other ice rinks – four in Gauteng and one in KwaZulu-Natal.

“If you want to be a professional skater, you’ll need to learn how to skate first. The benefit for the kids is that they are not only entertained, but they are also getting exercise while socialising within a safe and secure environment.”

Rodger said the Baywest ice rink would be “North American-sized”, measuring 27m x 54m – the standard size for South African ice rinks, he said.

“Our rink opens the door for school teams and amateur leagues,” he said. “We are starting off with a population not acquainted with ice skating, but over time people will learn how to skate and they will love it. From there they will follow paths such as figure or speed skating and ice hockey. Our rink will cater for this.”

Furthering Rodger’s mission to nurture ice skating talent in the province is the opening of his skating academy.

“We will run a skating academy which will consist of an eight-week course, teaching people how to skate. This would give parents a chance to ‘ice-proof’ their children and for the children to decide whether to continue to advance into either figure skating or ice hockey sports activities,” Rodger said.

With CCTV and one side of the rink consisting of sheer glass, Rodger said the chances for antisocial or bad behaviour were “absolutely minimal.”

“We also take a hard line on bad behaviour.

We are very strict on that, because we are catering for ages ranging from five years up to 30 years and over,” he said.

The rink would also play host to special events in the future, Rodger said. “For now we are focusing on establishing ice skating as a normal social and sporting activity for the people of the Eastern Cape – that is our prime mission.

Ice rinks are rare in South Africa, so we have to introduce people to something which is foreign to them.”

Special discount rates would be available to schools, party groups and other ice hockey sports teams, said Rodger. Social skating sessions would last from 10am to 5pm and from 7.30pm to 10.30pm or 11pm, with the time from 5pm to 7.30pm set aside for sports and the skating academy.

Baywest Mall marketing manager Samantha Hewitson said the ice rink was a major drawcard for families wanting to experience unique entertainment within safe and enjoyable surroundings.

“Parents will be able to drop off their children at the rink while they explore our shops and restaurants, safe in the knowledge that the rink is a safe and secure environment,” said Hewitson.

“All our Fun Factory offerings are boosted by the fact that they are safe and secure. Parents are able to do their own thing in the mall while their children are left to have fun, but are still within easy reach. Most importantly, they will be safe.”

Restaurants, a bowling alley and games arcade, and state-of-the-art cinema wing are also part of the mall’s R100-million Fun Factory wing.

Traffic lanes closed on R75 and N2 for road maintenance ROAD maintenance on the R75 and N2 will necessitate several lane closures in Nelson Mandela Bay from this month.

The South African National Roads Agency Limited said there would be only one closure per direction of travel at any given time.

Swift action by police saves baby NCEBA DLADLA ALERT Kwanobuhle police officers saved the life of a two-month-old baby from suffocation by her 17-year-old mentally distressed mother.

Police spokesman Sergeant Majola Nkohli said a normal complaint of domestic violence had been responded to by Sergeant Neville Douws and Constable Ronel Wesso from KwaNobuhle Visible Policing on April 7.

The officers found a man and the mother arguing. The mother was holding the baby girl.

“While they were arguing, the woman became aggressive and an alert Constable Wesso noticed that the woman was squeezing the ba-

by and was confused,” Nkohli said.

The constable acted swiftly to remove the suffocating baby from her mother.

The baby was rescued from her mother and taken to Uitenhage Provincial Hospital for medical observation, but had not been injured.

The mother was admitted to the same hospital for mental observation. The baby was released into the care of her maternal grandmother.

The case had been referred to social workers as no criminal case had been opened, Nkohli said.

Station commander Colonel Zolani Xawuka commended the officers for their swift actions in saving the baby’s life.

Two robbery suspects die in shoot-out with police CARA-LEE SCHEUN BULLETS flew in Motherwell on Monday when police chased five robbers after they attacked a police constable while she was asleep in her home.

‘Superwoman’ spoils carhijacker’s day NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth woman became a heroine in a hijack story in Kamvelihle, Motherwell.

The woman, whose name is being withheld to protect her from retaliation by criminals, helped a hijacked man recover his vehicle and chased and arrested one of the suspects.

Police spokesman Captain Andre Beetge said a man had stopped his vehicle in Buthelezi Street, Kamvelihle, just after 1am on Friday, April 3, apparently to relieve himself.

“While he was busy, two suspects rushed and choked him with shock sticks and then took the vehicle and drove off,” Beetge said.

The next morning, the victim of the robbery was driving another vehicle with a woman, searching for his vehicle. They spotted it in Ndzunga Street and chased it.

“The woman jumped out of the vehicle and started chasing. She caught one of the men and arrested him,” said Beetge. They caught the other suspect and handed the two over to the police.

“We are not condoning what the woman did, although we thank her for effecting the arrest. She could have put herself in trouble had the suspects been armed,” Beetge said.

He said a hijack victim should inform police of the incident and let police do their job.

The men are expected to appear in court soon.

Two of the suspects died in the shoot-out, while two others were wounded.

The police constable, who is stationed at the New Brighton police station and was working night shift, was woken by the robbers about 10am. They demanded that she hand over her bank cards.

It is not known how they managed to gain access to the house.

They threatened to kill her if the card’s pin code did not work.

Police spokesman Captain André Beetge said it was clear the robbers had known the victim was a police officer as they had also demanded she hand over her firearm, extra magazine, car keys and uniform.

After the robbery they fled in her Ford vehicle.

The constable received an sms on her cellphone from the bank, indicating where money had been withdrawn and alerted the police to

the suspects’ whereabouts.

The police’s tactical reaction unit was dispatched to Nyara Street, but no trace could be found of the constable’s car.

They did, however, see suspicious people in another vehicle. When they heard the police vehicle’s siren, the occupants of the vehicle jumped out and ran away.

A shoot-out ensued when the occupants, in their attempt to escape, fired shots at the police.

“Two of the men were wounded and died on the scene,” said Beetge.

Another man who ran from the scene was discovered in the roof of a nearby house and arrested.

Two other suspects were also wounded and arrested.

Beetge said the constable’s extra magazine and house and car keys were found in the possession of the suspects.

Her vehicle was found abandoned about 4km from the scene of the shoot-out in Kalendula Street.

Beetge said police had found two firearms, one of which belonged to the constable, at the scene. The constable’s uniform was, however, still missing.

Mafikizolo Reunited concert cancelled REPORTER THE Mafikizolo Reunited Tour to Port Elizabeth has been cancelled.

The ‘Khona’ hit-makers were due to perform at The Boardwalk on Saturday, 18 April 2015 as part of a nationwide tour.

According to Vuyiswa King, the Entertainment and Events Manager at The Boardwalk, the one-night-only concert in Port Elizabeth has been cancelled due to unforeseen circumstances.

“The reasons for the show’s cancellation are beyond our control. We deeply regret the

disappointment and inconvenience that will undoubtedly be caused to fans.

“We also extend our heartfelt apologies to those who had purchased tickets and counting down to seeing the band perform next week.

“The show was a much-anticipated event on our Autumn entertainment calendar, and we are committed to working with the band’s promoter, once appointed, to bring the band to The Boardwalk at a future date,” says King.

The first leg of the regional awards saw small business owners from the SBU Port Elizabeth incubator being honoured for their contribution to socio-economic development within the region.

SBU says its enterprise development awards highlight its commitment to assisting black business owners around the country in becoming sustainable enterprises.

It operates eight business incubators in the country and has benefited more than 2 000 entrepreneurs. “SBU understands the dire need to create sustainable jobs. We recognise the role played by small businesses in our communities and in the broader economy. Small businesses are essentially the heart of our economy and it is our duty to ensure they receive all the help they need to thrive,” said Akhona Noganta, regional manager of the Port Elizabeth business incubator.

Despite being one of the youngest incubators, PE boasted 18 active businesses that contributed to skills development and employment within the region, Noganta said.

Lwazi Gobane, owner of Blue Pepper Events Management agency and an SBU client, said the recognition that came with winning an award would encourage young black South Africans to consider entrepre-

neurship as a career path. “People will see it is possible to make it. I never thought I would get this far, but Shanduka Black Umbrellas believes in us and so we have to make it work,” Gobane said.

The Enterprise Development awards will continue to take place throughout April in the seven other regions in which SBU operates.

Nogata said SBU was a non-profit enterprise development incubation organisation partnering with the private sector, government and civil society to address the low levels of entrepreneurship and high failure rate of 100% black-owned emerging businesses in South Africa. The programme focuses on promoting entrepreneurship as a desirable economic path, and nurturing 100% black-owned businesses in the critical first three years of existence through the provision of nationwide incubators.

Among the winners were Ezamabamba Trading, a landscaping and gardening company started by Xolisile Kondile in 2008, which was awarded first place in two categories – Most Jobs Created for generating 21 jobs, and Best Performing Company.

Second, in the Most Jobs Created category, was Carbon Reduction Technologies owned by Khaya Mjo for creating four jobs.

Millbug (Pty) Ltd was also recognised on the night with Sabelo and Thulisile Volwana taking third place in the Most Jobs Created category. Fuel Serve Petroleum owned by Litha Kalipile Nodada took second place in the Best Performing Company category.

NMMU Jazz Vocal Studio to present free music lunch hour REPORTER THE NMMU Jazz Vocal Studio under the baton of TwoTone Music director Ulagh Williams, will host a free lunch hour concert in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium from 1pm on April 22.

The concert will feature NMMU jazz vocal students and a few guest performers from Williams’s private vocal studio, The Talent Factory. Accompanying the vocalists will be Williams (piano), and members of the TwoTone Band who are also music students at NMMU. Williams said the programme would include a wide selection of genres, from swing and Latin jazz to contemporary music and funk.

The audience could look forward to a very diverse menu, said Williams.

“From evergreen hits by Frank Sinatra and Tony Bennett, to Burt Bacharach, Cole Porter, Jobim, Stacey Kent, Al Green, Diana Krall and some Afrojazz - there’s something for every taste. Uitenhage’s Khanya Gospel Group presents show NCEBA DLADLA THE Khanya Gospel Group from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage has a show lined up at the Uitenhage Town Hall on Sunday 26 April. It starts at 2pm.

The group promises music of high quality as it is preparing to record a debut album later this year.

“Our vision as a gospel group is to give a message of hope, comfort and healing through our music,” said group member Zweliyaduma Ndlazi.

Formed in 2006 and having worked with the great Zwai Bala of the Bala Brothers, the Khanya Gospel Group have recorded two songs already, Ithemba Lam and Ndawulahlela.

The two songs, mastered and mixed at Bala Brothers Studios, can be seen on YouTube. They give a glimpse of what Khanya is all about as gospel group, according to Ndlazi, who explained that Khanya was in fact a new name adopted for the group since working with Zwai Bala.

“We were initially known as Christ’s Generation. The people of Uitenhage, and

in fact the greater Nelson Mandela Metro know us. They love our music. The only thing that has been missing was us cutting a CD. And that is something we’ll definitely do after this show,” an elated Ndlazi said.

The Khanya Gospel Group pride themselves on having performed on the mostwatched SABC gospel programme, Gospel Gold. This was during the Sounds of the Eastern Cape recording by the national television broadcaster, said Ndlazi.

According to Ndlazi, on the day of the show they also have him as a solo artist, Chumani Ngojo and Jeff “The Psalmist” Bottoman to spice up the show with their different kind of gospel music.

Popular Nelson Mandela Bay Mandilakhe Nontenjwa would be MC at the event, said Ndlazi.

At-risk youths come together in sports MORE than 200 youngsters from eight homes around the city will compete against one other in a soccer tournament organised by their various NGOs. NGO The Gem Project is spearheading the tournament, which will be held on April 18 and 19 at the Northern Lights Special School in Cotswold.

The tournament will see boys and girls between the ages of 16 and 21 compete in an effort by The Gem Project to give them

life skills and promote a healthy lifestyle.

The Gem Project sports coach Thabo Mosebekoa said, “We have done this as we feel sport is a fantastic way to distract young adults from the vices they are faced with in the areas they live in. The Gem Project is a small educational NGO which trains previously disadvantaged students in mathematics, English, life skills and vocational skills.

“As we try to give our students the best all-round education within two years, we have recently added sport to our curriculum,” Mesebekoa said.

PE motor man gets top job REPORTER A LOCAL executive has been appointed president and managing director of GM’s South Africa, Sub-Saharan Africa and Israel operations, from the beginning of June, General Motors has announced.

Born and bred in Port Elizabeth, Ian Nicholls will assume responsibility for the company’s manufacturing, sales and export operations in South Africa, as well as its sales operations in Sub-Saharan Africa markets and Israel.

In his new role, he will report directly to Mario A Spangenberg, president and managing Director of GM’s Africa and Middle East operations.

This move is part of the company’s consolidation of its Africa and Middle East operations.

Spangenberg said the appointment of Nicholls would enable the company to further streamline its Sub-Saharan Africa operations from a product, distribution and customer support perspective. “We are transforming our business across the General Motors international region, focusing our investments on where the opportunity for growth is greatest.

“Africa is recognised as the next frontier for growth for the automotive industry. General Motors is taking the right decisions to ensure our business is best able to meet and exceed the expectations of our customers and to grow sustainably into the future,” said Spangenberg.

Nicholls said his immediate priority would be to ensure that a market-driven portfolio was in place, to expand sales volumes both in the domestic and exports markets and to provide outstanding service to customers.

“We are well-positioned for growth with our world-class vehicle assembly plant and hitech parts distribution centre in Port Elizabeth, coupled with our extensive distribution network of more than 200 dealers in Sub-Saharan Africa.

“Our strengthened portfolio of Chevrolet, Opel and Isuzu passenger and light commercial vehicles will enable us to meet and exceed the requirements of our customers in Sub-Saharan Africa. Last year alone our Opel sales volume in South Africa grew by 36%, while our locally assembled Isuzu pick-up volume increased by 8%. And in Sub-Saharan Africa our overall sales volumes increased by 31%.”

Before this appointment, Nicholls served as vice-president of GM South Africa’s operations and before that vice-president of planning for GM South Africa.

Nicholls began his automotive industry career in 1990 at Delta Motor Corporation, where he held several positions including manager of new business development, managing director of a catalytic convertor subsidiary company, director of materials management, director of sales and marketing and director of planning.

He holds an Accounting B Com (cum laude) from the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University and qualified as a chartered accountant with Deloitte.

“Ian has a deep understanding of our business and the Sub-Saharan African markets and was chosen to lead our business because he is the right person for the job,” Spangenberg said.

In the semi-finals Real White City secured a hard-fought 2-1 victory against Roaring Tigers. Eastern Jumpers put up a spirited performance when they defeated PE Sundowns 1-0 in the extra time in their semi-finals.

Eastern Jumpers then beat Real White City 1-0 in the finals.

Tyali wins 10km Motherwell Freedom Run SELBY MADIKANE NEDBANK Central Gauteng Athletics Club star Xolisa Tyali, 26, came home first with a time of 29:021 in the 10km Motherwell Freedom Run on Saturday.

The event, which was organised by the Ikamva Athletics Club and Warriors Road Running Club in association with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality, took place at the Motherwell NU 2 Stadium on Saturday.

Event organiser Michael Mbambani said the race had been organised to honour the role played by the late President Nelson Mandela in uniting all South Africans through sport. The race attracted more than 500 road runners from all corners of the Bay. The 5km fun run also drew a large number of participants.

The Eastern Cape-born Tyali had to show his abilities to beat Nedbank Road-Running Club Western Province athlete Lungile Gongqa, who recorded the next best time of 29:23. The Lusikisiki Athletics Club’s Xolisani Zamkele

came in third with a time of 29:36.
