Airshow gives wings to Eastern Cape charities ANNA PAUW
APART from being a highlight on the East-
ern Cape’s event calendar, the Baywest Port Elizabeth Airshow will be the proverbial wind beneath the wings of a number of charities which stand to benefit from this year’s event. According to airshow director and head of the MTR Smit Children’s Haven in Port Elizabeth, Dr Crystal Watson, numerous charities and initiatives will reap the benefits of the giving nature of thousands of aviation enthusiasts expected to flock to the airshow on Saturday, October 25. “As in the past, proceeds of the airshow will be carefully distributed not only to benefit the MTR Smit Children’s Haven. We have a long- standing tradition of assisting other charities in any way possible,” Watson said. Children’s charities, aviation development for under-privileged children and wildlife preservation initiatives are at the top of the beneficiary list this year. This year’s airshow will be hosted on the grounds of the South African Airforce (SAAF) Museum in Southdene, behind Forest Hill.
According to airshow organising committee member, SAAF representative and curator of the SAAF Museum, Captain Mark Kelbrick, the change in venue opens up a world of possibilities to organisers and visitors alike. “The venue offers more parking as well as leisure areas and also affords airshow-goers easy access to the museum displays.” Renovations at the Museum are currently under way. According to Kelbrick, the line-up and vision for this year’s event may very well result in the show once again being selected as the best airshow in the country. “The PE airshow has won the coveted airshow of the year award twice and has been runner-up twice. Only one other airshow, namely the Swartkops Museum Show, has won the airshow of the year award twice,” said Kelbrick. An action expo, numerous stalls and exciting competitions will provide plenty of entertainment on the day, while Brian Emenis, world-renowned airshow commentator will keep visitors linked to the aviation action via live links from the pilots. For more information visit Baywest Port Elizabeth Airshow on facebook.
Local could soon be the next Mandela Bay published author
Luxolo Gqamane of KwaNoxolo in Port Eizabeth could be the next Mandela Bay published poet.
NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth lad Luxolo Gqamane (18) hopes to be a published author in the not too distant future.

Gqamane, of KwaNoxolo Township and who is a Grade 9 pupil at Sanctor High School in Cleary Park, has already finished writing nine poems and two short stories. He was currently busy writing his third short story. “My writing is in English. Perhaps it is influenced by my English medium school. Although I am a Xhosa speaking person, I am forced to think and write in English,” said Gqamane who also writes for his school’s News Letter Apollo 2014. His writes about every day issues, life, success, failure, fears and poverty. He would also like to study political science at university - because of his love for politics. “I love politics and would like to become a politician one day. But I’d like to study first, so that I make a positive contribution to the lives of the people I lead,” said Gqa-
Mkhulu Gxokwana believes food gardens chase hunger away NCEBA DLADLA MANGALISO Gxokwana (61) is not scared of hard work. In fact, Mkhulu (old man) Gxokwana of Kwazakhele township in Port Elizabeth is known as one of the people who work in the garden to put food on the table. “I look after the garden at Seyisi Primary School and the Lilitha Agricultural Primary Cooperative at Daku,” said Gxokwana. Gxokwana works the garden at the Award-winning Seyisi Primary School with teachers and pupils. The garden benefits them for their daily meals and the Lilitha Coop garden, where he works with the community, feeds members of the community. “I enjoy working in the garden. I started gardening as early as 1956 as a school subject,” reminisced Mkhulu Gxokwana. He said he enjoyed it more while in Cape Town in the early 1990s seeing people planting on sand. He then got training from Abalimi basekhaya (a Cape Town-based group of farmers) who produced food in the garden for a living. “I joined a group of gardeners called Siyazama in Khayelitsha, Cape Town and we worked the gardens on sandy soil. When Gxokwana came back to Port Elizabeth in 1997 he was so much in love with

gardening that he bought a book entitled “Food Gardening Foundation” from which his love for tilling the soil for food production was heightened. The old man praised former Nelson Mandela Bay Executive mayor Nceba Faku for his vision. “Former mayor Nceba (Faku) had a dream. He sent some of us local gardeners to get training at Fort Hare University in 2003. “We studied crop production, live-stock production. piggery, poultry farming, hydrophonics, irrigation schemes, group dynamics and financial management among other disciplines,” a proud Gxokwana said. When they came back, Gxokwana said they started the garden at Silver Town and after receiving more training from Uluntu Academy they went to establish another garden at the Pentecostal Church, both in Kwazakhele. Gxokwana bemoaned the fact that a huge problem local gardeners have always been facing is a shortage of water for irrigation. “I do a large number of hectares alone. I love gardening, my wife Nomathamsanqa (Gxokwana) knows that gardening is my second love,” quipped Mkhulu Gxokwana, a father of six children and a grandfather of many.
mane who got inspiration from Sanctor High School Grade 9 English teacher, Sade Krause to want to become a writer. He said it was his teacher’s good command of the language of the Queen that made him fall in love with it, to speak, read and write. This, however, did not mean he undermined his mother tongue, isiXhosa, he explained. “I am also inspired by the writings of the late Poet Maya Angelou and playwright Dr John Kani,” Gqamane told PE Express Indaba. To feed his interest in the people’s lives and circumstances around them, Gqamane is an avid reader. He said, “I like reading. Most of the time I am reading a book and entering debates and filling in quizzes and puzzles from the magazines.” Gqamane would like to write his autobiography. He said his life may have interesting twists that many people could learn from. “I’d like to write my story, perhaps to be able to change my life situation through that very writing,” he said.

Minister Makwetla visits St Albans prison LIZEKA TANDWA “VIOLENCE and corruption at St Albans Correctional Services have been stabilized and dealt with.” So assured the Deputy Minister of Correctional Services, Thabang Makwetla, last week during his one day visit to the prison. His visit to St Albans was an effort which forms part of government’s approach to get public servants committed to serving citizens and improve on service delivery. This comes after two correctional service officers were stabbed within days of each other at St Albans in July this year. During his visit Makwetla said the national office had deployed 160 of its backup force members to help with the situation of staff shortages, which has been hampering service delivery at the prison. “After many reports of violence in the prison, the National Department of Correctional Services deployed a task team which investigated not only the violent incidents, but also the corruption and since the force hit the ground there has not been a single incident reported.” Makwetla said the prison had various challenges, including overcrowding due to the renovations at the PE prison and the short-
age of staff members caused by the overcrowding. With the help of the national task team, the prison has since removed cell phones, sharp objects and drugs from inmates, according to the Minister. Makwetla also spoke to six inmates who were in the process of writing their matric exams. He praised the six inmates, who were the only ones out of 5 000 prisoners who are currently pursuing their matric education. “What you are doing gives me pride and I ask that you continue to further your studies. You are a great example to the other men inside and I am encouraged by what you are doing.” There are also seven prisoners who are furthering their studies through UNISA, Makwetla added. The prison currently has three workshops and 140 offenders working as part of their rehabilitation - mainly in textile, steel and wood, which is then transported to various prisons and correctional services offices across the province.

Armed robbery foiled, one man in court NCEBA DLADLA A MAN (25) will appear soon in the Uitenhage Magistrates’ court, facing charges of business robbery and possession of an unlicensed firearm and ammunition, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei. According to the police spokesperson, members of the Despatch SAPS arrested two suspects within minutes after a robbery at a Spaza shop in Thobile Busakwe Street, Khayamnandi, Despatch on Sunday evening at about 7:30pm. According to police reports, two armed suspects entered the foreign national’s spaza shop and demanded cash at gun-point. “They then grabbed cash and fled the scene on foot,” said Seekoei, adding that the suspects escaped with an undisclosed amount of cash. “Police were alerted by the owner of the shop.
It was soon established that the suspects were still in the vicinity. When police approached the scene, one of the suspects fired a shot at the police officials,” said Seekoei. The police responded by returning fire which forced the suspect to run for cover in a nearby house. Police continued chasing after the suspects and arrested the 25 year-old within a hundred metres from the scene of the crime. Police recovered a 9mm pistol with a loaded magazine, according to Seekoei. “Our members were commended for the swift arrest of the suspect and the recovery of a loaded 9mm pistol just a few minutes after the business robbery took place, he said. According to W/O Seekoei, the fire-arm will be sent for ballistic tests to ascertain whether it was used in the commission of other crimes. He said one suspect was injured during the incident. The other suspect was still at large.

West Africans flee Ebola, head to South Africa AS the world panics over the Ebola outbreak, West Africans are reportedly fleeing their countries in a bid to outrun the virus – some even headed overland for South Africa. According to the Sunday Independent, this could place South Africa at considerable risk. Johannesburg-based members of the immigrant communities from Liberia, Sierra Leone and Guinea told the newspaper that there was a considerable number of people attempting to reach SA, most trying to reach it overland – a 5 000km trek. One man said he alone knew of at least five people who were on their way. The newspaper reports that it would just take one carrier to change the situation in SA – particularly in a community that is largely housed in the densely populated city centre of Johannesburg – an ideal breeding ground for a communicable virus such as Ebola. In addition, these often undocumented migrants also enter the country through the porous border at Beitbridge in northern Limpopo – an entry point that has no
measures such as temperature radars in place to check visitors who could be carriers. However, Minister of Home Affairs Malusi Gigaba and Minister of Health Aaron Motsoaledi have stated that although caution needs to be exercised, it cannot be done at the expense of fuelling xenophobia. Motsoaledi said that he felt SA was too far away for most people to reach by land and if they were carrying the disease, the chances are they would not make it to the border alive, reported the newspaper. Meanwhile, as reported by News24 on Saturday, the UN special envoy on Ebola says the number of cases is probably doubling every three to four weeks and the response needs to be 20 times greater than it was at the beginning of October. David Nabarro warned the UN General Assembly on Friday that without the mass mobilisation of the world to support the affected countries in West Africa, “it will be impossible to get this disease quickly under control, and the world will have to live with the Ebola virus forever.” Nabarro said the UN knows what needs
X1PAR9U1-151014-XT-mglmty-fun
to be done to catch up to and overtake Ebola’s rapid advance “and together we’re going to do it. “And our commitment to all of you is to achieve it within a matter of months – a few months,” he said. More than 4 000 people have died of the disease since the start of the outbreak, the worst to date. Last week, News24 reported that although no cases of Ebola have been reported in South Africa, the country is ready for a possible outbreak. “It’s not that we are just starting now. We are just ramping up efforts to fight the virus that started in December,” said Motsoaledi. Motsoaledi said Cabinet had approved a budget of R32.5m to support Ebola preparedness and response activities. ) Eleven hospitals have been readied in South Africa, two of which are in the Eastern Cape (Frere Hospital in East London and Livingstone Hospital in Port Elizabeth).

Former world boxing champion Mzukisi Sikali remembered NCEBA DLADLA FORMER Multiple world boxing champion Mzukisi “Laciar” Sikali could be gone, but he is surely not forgotten. This became evident when Johannesburg musician and businessman Mzwakhe Mbuli, aka The People’s Poet, called Sikali’s family in Khayelitsha, Uitenhage, to say that Sikali, would be honoured during his SABC Siyabakhumbula (“We remember them”) Awards scheduled to take place at the Sandton Convention Centre in Johannesburg on Saturday, November 1. Sikali was brutally murdered by thugs who wanted to rob him of his cellphone in September 2005. This will be the fifth anniversary of the awards, this year presented by the City of Johannesburg. The awards are Mbuli’s initiative to recognise and honour talent that has come out of South Africa through music, arts in its diversity, sports and recreation. “The awards have paid homage to the patriots and legends who displayed diverse talents and contributions from entertainers to educators, from literary brilliance to the extraordinary folk,” said Mbuli. Those who have been honoured at past awards include Gibson Kente, Sophie Mgcina, Percy Qoboza, Brenda Fassie and Patrick “Ace” Ntsoelengoe to mention but few. Mbuli, a staunch boxing supporter who has honoured the likes of Arthur “Fighting Prince” Mayisela and Brian Baronet of fisticuffs fame, said it is the third year since he wanted to honour the former SA Junior-Fly-
weight, World Boxing Union (WBU) Junior Flyweight, WBU Superflyweight and IBO Flyweight Champion Sikali who also held the B-grade WBC International Junior Flyweight and WBA Intercontinental Flyweight titles. “Mzukisi, Oh, I loved him so much. I followed all his fights as I am a staunch boxing supporter. He was a great fighter. I was so hurt when he was brutally stabbed to death by thugs. “Through these awards, we want the stories of a great man like him to be told for many years to come – for the benefit of future generations,” said Mbuli. “It is nine years since he died. But I remember Mzukisi’s passing as if it was yesterday. I could not believe it when police came to tell us that his body was lying in a pool of blood in the street. He was such a good child,” said Mzukisi’s still visibly distraught mother Nozizwe Sikali. Mama Nozizwe said she had since forgiven the murderers and accepted her son’s death. “We want to thank Mzwakhe (Mbuli) for the awards. We are very happy to hear some people have not forgotten about my son. We think of him every day and know that he loved boxing,” said Mama Nozizwe. Mzukisi’s younger brother Mzwamatola said they had also started the Mzukisi Sikali Boxing Club, in memory of his brother. “The club is producing excellent fighters who win medals during tournaments. What Mzwakhe did, is a cherry on top,” he said. The duo are expected to fly to Johannesburg to collect Mzukisi “Laciar” Sikali’s Siyabakhumbula Award at the end of the month.

Old boxing trainer Martin Dyer bids protege Linda Nondzaba farewell NCEBA DLADLA FORMER boxing trainer Martin Dyer would like to be remembered as someone who helped the late Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba (51), of Wells Estate in Port Elizabeth, become the South African Welterweight champion.
Former boxing trainer, Martin Dyer (77), shows a picture of himself (on the right) with SA Welterweight Champion Linda Nondzaba and Mark Manas, (left) his assistant. Manas trained Brown Bongo who was Linda Nondzaba’s chief sparring partner. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
Dyer said he was saddened by Nondzaba’s passing and that he, being away from boxing, didn’t know the man was sick. Nondzaba died in his sleep at his home last Sunday after a short illness, “I am the one who trained Linda Nondzaba to beat Frederick ‘Gorilla’ Siswana in Johannesburg in 1990. “He came to my gym and I took over his training and helped build his punching power,” said Martin Dyer of Kabega Park. Dyer, who will be turning 77 next week is known for having trained boxers like Bramley Whiteboy and Caiphus Ntante, among others, and assisted pugilists like Vuyani “Wonder Boy” Nene, Brown Bon-
go and Jan Horn to mention but a few. Still showing his superior moves and possession of great scientific knowledge of the sport, Dyer described how he took Nondzaba to the championship. He said, “I saw potential in him and knew what was lacking. And, he won great fights after that including against Phumzile Madikane who was otherwise a better boxer.” Dyer said Nondzaba invited him to his amateur boxing tournament where he was hoping to honour him with a trophy. “We were hoping to do that in the second week of October. Condolences to the family,” said Dyer who is now involved in training racing pigeons. A memorial service was organised by the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality’s Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Culture and the Boxing Veterans Association (BOVA). South African National Amateur Boxing Organisation (SANABO) President, Andile Mofu, Boxing SA (BSA) Mandela
Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza, Eastern Cape Sports Council President Khusta Magada, DSRAC’s senior official Stone Bell, (BOVA) regional President boxing veteran Ace Makaluza and Nondzaba’s colleague at Wells Boxing Association Club, Andile Gege spoke about their loss after Nondzaba’s passing. Mapitiza told Nondzaba’s family, “We share your pain with this loss. He was a community development worker who kept our youth out of the streets and away from crime and drugs.” Former ring greats like Christopher Dlamini, Pillay Duiker, Frazer Ndzandze, Thembinkosi Mtyenene, Thembinkosi Twenana, Mzukisi Oliphant including boxing fans like Xoza Mbetha were at the service. Chief Masemola who trained Nondzaba earlier in his career and helped him turn professional with the likes of Thozamile “Black Stallion” Fumbeza also spoke about Nondzaba. Nonzaba is survived by his wife Limise and three children.
Family and former ring greats remember their own, Linda ’Black Mamba’ Nondzaba Nelson Mandela Bay sportsmen and women including former ring greats bade farewell to the former SA Welterweight Champion Linda “Black Mamba” Nondzaba during a Memorial Service organised by DSRAC and Boxing Veterans Association at the Wells Estate Community Hall on Monday. Banela Njadayi turns love of art into business INDABA REPORTER HIS art grabbed the attention of the PE Tourism Board, who purchased his Legends painting at the recent Stakeholder Appreciation Day hosted by The Hope Factory at its Port Elizabeth operation. Banele Njadayi of Blart Projects turned his love of art into a business. “A part of me always wanted to make my own money and be recognised as a well-known artist; however, I didn’t know I could become an entrepreneur.”
While exhibiting his work at the Stakeholder Day, the artist and businessman didn’t know he was about to strike it lucky. He’s ecstatic about the Tourism Board’s support for local artists and for buying his paining for R7 500. The Legends painting was inspired by his late grandfather and his friends, who used to sit around and tell stories. “The painting is dedicated to him; it is a reflection of my childhood,” says Banele. Multi-talented Banele says he doesn’t limit what he works with. He’ll use scrap metals, as well as any used and found items to create
his masterpieces. He says of his talent, “It is the gift the Lord has given me. I started this business because I love it and I am passionate about art”. He sculpts, paints, and is making shoulder bags on the side. In 2011 the New Signature Awards honoured him with a merit award for the Dying to Live series. The three-piece artworks were made with found objects. In October he’ll be shipping new artwork that he’s currently working on to Chicago for an exhibition taking place in February 2015. Ndoni Dance Art Academy spreads its wings NCEBA DLADLA THEMBINKOSI Ndoni’s dance Art Academy is spreading its wings to the Northern Areas of Port Elizabeth. The academy that specialises in Ballroom, Waltz, Cha Cha and Latin American Dances for beginners and professionals has recently opened its new branch at the Gelvandale Community Hall. “We decided with the board of directors that we open the branch at Gelvandale Community Hall to make it easy for the people from the Northern Areas who are forced to travel long distances to go to Kwazakhele and Motherwell where we also have dance studios,” said Ndoni who is the brains behind the NPO reg-
istered academy. “We are in the business of developing dance sport skills among the youth and adults of Nelson Mandela Bay and to do so, we hope to come closer to our members,” said Ndoni, adding that they would continue with their plans to make sure that all the metro community halls were being utilised for this purpose. Ndoni started dance sport at Nangoza Jebe Community Hall, then known as the Great Centenary Hall in 1984 under the tutelage of the late Njongi Mbanjwa and Zola Mpongoshe among others. He left there to start dancing under Monde Qunta’s Arise School of Dance at the Red Cross, eSeyisi which he credits for having made him the professional
dancer that he is today. “This is the institution that took me from level one to the championship level,” said Ndoni, adding that since he started with his academy, he has taken dancers to England, France and the Netherlands. Ndoni said, “I’ve got dancers that must go to France, Thailand and Holland as we speak. The problem is finance, but we’re not worried, come what may, we’ll make sure that these dancers go overseas to do what they love to do – dance!”

ness or attending The Hope Factory’s mentorship programme, he teaches art part-time to kids taking part in the Masifunde Learner Development programme who are also passionate about the crafts. The children range from grade 5 to 12. “I teach so I can contribute something worthwhile back to the community”. His message of encouragement to other artists who don’t believe they can use their talents to make a living is: “Stay focused on your dream; continue to be creative and always be positive, as it makes a difference when times are tough.”

Primary School in Motherwell is the brainchild of Unathi Hloyi, a Motherwell lad who spent 10 years in KZN for work and study at Durban University of Technology. During this time, Hloyi had an opportunity to study music and its role in local community development. Music, he said, played a huge role also in economic development and socio-
cultural heritage. With the help of his friends and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) Music students, Hloyi is on a mission to teach music and introduce school choristers to the orchestra. “We’ve identified township schools to start with our project which we launched at Mbon.

iselo Primary School with seven pupils,” said Hloyi, adding that since they started with the young musicians, other members of the community joined the recorder classes and music theory including voice training. The students range in ages from 9 to 35 years, most of which are learners, tertiary education students and unemployed individuals. A proud Hloyi said his students cannot only play the recorder, they can also read music! “In the Eastern Cape townships you rarely find choirs singing with orchestra, unlike in other parts of the country,” said Hloyi. He said, “Most of our choirs use piano for accompaniment. Very few (choirs) use orchestra, if there is any. We want to change that through the introduction of the Classical Angels Music Foundation.” According to Hloyi, most of the local conductors use tonic solfa doh re mi but when one goes to the other side of the country, people read music through staff notation. “A lot more people are able to listen to music currently, said Hloyi. Most people have a skill to listen but can still not read music. That has to change,” he said. Hloyi thanked Airports Company South Africa for their sponsorship which kept them in business. However, he stated that they would need more assistance as they funded the project from their own pockets.

IronmanSA joins opposition Madibaz close off Varsity Netball against fish farm campaign LASHEIGH LUCAS IRONMAN SA organisers have added their voice to that of local businesses who are opposed to plans to develop a 6km fish farm anchored off Port Elizabeth’s popular Hobie Beach. They believe the fish farm poses a major threat as it will be a magnet for sharks, and a threat to marine life, eco tourism and investment in the Bay. IronmanSA has spearheaded an online petition as part of the campaign to stop the fish farm. “Our beaches have become an integral part of Nelson Mandela Bay in terms of tourism, water sport, recreation and the lifestyle of many residents,” said IronmanSA spokesperson Michael Flanagan. “They are one of the city’s biggest attractions and to establish something which will place this in jeopardy is something we cannot take lightly. We will all be affected should the aquaculture development zone (fish farm) go ahead,” said Flanagan. According to a report in The Herald, Marine biologist Shirley Parker-Nance warned that
the project could cause the tourism industry to crash, and see pollution on Bay beaches as well as lead to the International Blue Flag statuses being revoked. She said the abandoned inland fish farm in Coega – known as the Prawn Farm or SeaArk – was the ideal place to set up a farm in a more controlled environment. Flanagan added, “The effects on the tourism industry will be significant. This includes the loss of tourism income to the city, visitors and potentially jobs within the industry. “As a city, we have worked hard to establish Nelson Mandela Bay as the watersport capital of Africa and this will undo this work. “Environmentally, there is a threat to the marine ecosystem and the potential to attract predators such as sharks to Port Elizabeth’s most popular swimming beaches is high. This does not bode well for sports events such as Ironman and others who make use of the ocean and beaches”. The online petition on the website is currently still open for the public to sign. “We are doing all we can to create awareness,” concluded Flanagan. To sign the petition visit the website

THE Spar NMMU Madibaz brought their netball season to an anticlimactic close as they quietly exited the Varsity Netball tournament in Johannesburg on Monday, October 6. The Madibaz lost their last game of the round-robin section against Pukke (63-37) but had beaten hosts the University of Johannesburg (50-25) the previous day to finish a respectable fifth in the overall standings. The final fixtures reflect the up-and-down nature of the Madibaz campaign, with the team from Port Elizabeth ending the competition on three wins and four losses. Madibaz head coach, Dumisani Chauke said her relatively young and inexperienced squad had done well and she was pleased with their performance in the highlevel competition. “The standard was set very high by the team that made it to the semifinals last year. Most of those senior players, myself included, were not part of the team this year. “We may not have achieved a top-four finish this year but we have a different ‘tick’, so to speak.” With 294 goals for and 295 goals against them, the Madibaz demonstrated a good balance between attack and defence on the court. Proteas player, Zanele Vimbela, anchored the defence while multiple FNB Player of the Match Bavuyise Matyumza was consistently accurate on goal. “Our defence always does well but we will need to improve in our shooting circle. Although we’ve done well, we can always do bet-
ter.” Chauke said she was looking forward to an even greater season next year. “I am proud of each and every one of my girls!” She said they had already qualified for the third stage of the competition with a top-eight finish at the University Sport South Africa tournament earlier this year. “So viewers will be seeing us again on their TV screens.” Chauke said the management and players would sit down early next year to discuss their objectives for the 2015 tournament.

Young Stars Netball Team has male leader NCEBA DLADLA MEN like Nero Thompson of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage are playing a pivotal role in ensuring that young girls and boys are kept safe in sport and away from drugs and crime. This is the view of Township Netball Development coach Amanda Konono. President of Young Stars Netball Club Nero spends time looking after the development of the club which is one of the best in the local Lovelife Netball League. Assisted by Amanda Konono, a player-coach, Thompson is “Hands on in the game.” He follows what is happening in the sport with enthusiasm and interest according to Konono. She said, “We appreciate what Bhut’ Nero is doing. He is the only male that is supporting us at the moment. He spends his time giving us direction and showing the young ones that there is future in sport. He is hands-on in the develop-
ments of the club. We respect him.” Netball has also been the domain of males as well in the recent past. Said Konono, “We’ve got guys that play Netball. The Lovelife Nakanjani Netball Club is doing well. But they don’t have opposition here until they go to Port Elizabeth to play official games. That is not enough.” Konono did mention, however, that they also have male umpires that Love Life support them with, but not enough male supporters, “except for the soccer players of course; they do support us,” said Konono whose side beat Stokes 13-10 in the league at the weekend. CHIPPA United registered their second win when they beat Amazulu 4-1 in their Multichoice Diski Challenge at Tuks Stadium in Pretoria on Sunday. Having struggled without registering points over the past outings, Head Coach Eddie Dyaloyi and his Assistant Coach Patrick Mayo are making vast improvement in their youthful side. Despite their 2-0 loss to Mamelodi Sundowns on Saturday, United were resilient in winning 4-1 against Amazulu. In their first home game at Gelvandale Stadium a week ago, young Chilli Boys took their supporters by storm when they hammered Freestate Stars 6-2. The son of Patrick Mayo, Khanyiso bagged two quick goals while Siyabonga Dubula pulled two well-taken goals, with William Thwala and Njongo Somila Ntsundwana scoring a goal apiece. Stars consolation goals came off from the boots of Mohammed Khan and Sinawo Masana. After accumulating six points, Chilli Boys are in fifth position of the Group B log standings. Ideas won on penalties in Nedbank Cup IT WAS a do-or-die game when Young Ideas beat Showvillage 5-3 on penalties after the goalless fulltime draw in their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay Nedbank Cup eliminations game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Both sides played enthralling attacking football with the goal keepers pulling brilliant saves at point blank range.
