‘Claims of corruption must be investigated’ NCEBA DLADLA

EMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Elizabeth are investigating the claims that the delivery of houses in Motherwell, have been fraught with allegations of fraud and corruption.

There are allegations that some people are illegally getting houses ahead of those who have long been in the queue for this basic human need. At the forefront of this outcry is the South African National Civic Organisation (SANCO), Motherwell Branch.

“There is so much corruption in the allocation of houses in Ward 54. This has been going on for quite some time now and we are sick and tired of it,” said SANCO Branch Chairperson Siphiwo Dayimani.

Dayimani mentioned a number of cases that irked members of the community who charged SANCO to take action.

“A case has been opened. We are busy with investigations and cannot mention names at this juncture as no one has been charged just yet,” said police spokesperson Captain Andre Beetge, adding that they were still collecting and collating information.

According to Dayimani, “We’ve got a young lady, a lodger who became so active in the lo-

cal structures only to see herself getting a house ahead of many people who have been on the waiting list.”

“I served with her in the local structure and cannot remember any meeting resolution alluding to the fact that she must get a house ahead of anyone else in the queue,” said NU 29 resident Vulikhaya Pasiya.

Pasiya claims he and other residents were being “bypassed” in the housing allocation and he did not know why. According to him, a full-scale investigation of fraud and corruption was needed in the ward.

Dayimani said, “When we ( a group of shack dwellers) illegally occupied land in the area police were quickly called, a case was opened

and we were charged with land invasion and given a court order. Why not with her?”

“We always encourage members of the public to report any form or signs of corruption within the government housing delivery to the law enforcement officers for a formal investigation to be done,” said Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, adding that they were also encouraging people suspecting corrupt activities to bring the evidence or information to the municipal housing directorate for internal investigations to be done.

“We are committed to fighting corruption wherever it manifests itself within all municipal departments, even if our own municipal officials or councillors are implicated.

The SAPS in Port Elizabeth is investigating corruption in housing delivery in Motherwell’s NU 29.

Fundraising event to support Protec maths and science education initiative LEARNERS who are members of Protec, a Non-profit making Organisation (NPO) that’s supporting learners’ performance in Science and Technology careers will hold a talent search at the Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre in KwaZakhele on Saturday 27 July.

This will be a fund-raising event to assist learners from the disadvantaged communicaties who participate in the Intervention Programme by Protec to improve their performance in Maths, Science and Technology, according to Team Leader, Olwethu Kopo.

Explaining, Kopo said Protec was founded in 1982 to provide South Africa with a skilled work-force in these much needed careers. It has offices all over South Africa while its Port Elizabeth office is at the PE College, Algoa Campus, Struandale.

“We recruit learners from Grade 10-12 largely from the disadvantaged communities and guide them through a 3-year programme that’s designed to boost their academic standards and skills, and encourage an interest in maths and science based careers,” said Kopo, adding that they also assist learners in finding jobs, applying for

bursaries and securing placement in tertiary institutions.

Many of the children they assist come from New Brighton, Zwide, KwaZakhele, Motherwell and KwaNobuhle townships.

They are learners from schools such as Ithembelihle Comprehensive, Cowan, Douglas Mbopha, Newell, Morningside, Lawson Brown and Strelitzia High, according to Kopo.

“Without sponsorship, our learners struggle to raise money for taxi fare to and from classes, often feel pressurised to attend school and other events on Saturday mornings and are discouraged from attending by adverse weather conditions and personal stress,” he said.

This, however, could change if interested and able companies and individuals from the Friendly City could support this venture, said Kopo, adding that there will be so much music, dance and poetry talent on display on the day.

The show starts at 12 noon till 5pm. Tickets are available now at Algoa Campus at R15 each. They cost R20 at the door. – NCEBA

THE strike by Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal employees in the libraries, traffic and electricity departments is over.

This is thanks to a marathon meeting between members of the Mayoral Task Team and Municipal Workers Unions SAMWU and IMATU to find common ground.

Mayoral Task Team members were expected to table their report at a Special Council meeting tomorrow, Thursday 18 July.

Since Monday, all the services in the municipal libraries and offices of the traffic department as well as the electricity and energy departments have been available, said Municipal spokesperson Kupido Baron.

“The negotiations were intricate and sensi-

tive since the (employees’) concerns raised cut across different directorates,” said Mayoral Task Team spokesperson Beza Ntshona, adding that they agreed on all the issues raised.

According to Ntshona, the municipal management has started working on a strategy to determine how best to deal with expired licenses and other issues that the community faced owing to the strike action.

“We would like to apologise for the inconvenience cause as a result of the recent action by our employees but since we reached the agreement we are all on the same page and ready to provide great services to our residents,” said Ntshona. – NCEBA DLADLA

Qoto is the founder and director of What Can I Do Project, a non-profitmaking organisation (NPO) which is aimed at helping the youth find a purpose in life.

Through this newly established project, Qoto, of Westering, believes that the youth are the agents of change. To that effect, he said, he was hoping to change people’s perspective about giving back to the community.

According to this highly philosophical Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) BA Psychology second year student, one does not need to be in his or her 30s or 40s to make a difference in life.

A bookworm and motivational speaker who goes out to schools to encourage and assist learners to start debating societies and engage in extensive reading, Qoto said, “I believe in the power of words and acting on your

aims.”

He said he started his motivational talks first at his alma maters, Papenkuils Primary and St Thomas High Schools respectively. To date, he has been to Sophakama, Newton Tech and Alex High Schools where he exhorted the youth to see the importance of education as the key to liberation.

“Massive reading, debating and public speaking helped shape my intellectual development. Now I assist people to start their own initiatives in terms of music programmes, fine arts, mentoring and an adopt-a-school programme through the What Can I Do Project platform,” said Qoto.

He attributes his inquisitive mind and socialisation as a critical thinker who was always to utilise the intellectual genes of his father, Charles Qoto, a NMMU lecturer.

In his parting shots, Qoto said, “I am also driven by the three pillars taken from the Siyanda Qoto. following quotes: JF Kennedy once said, ‘Ask not what America can do for you, but what you can do for America”. Mahatma Ghandi said, ‘Be the change that you want to see’ and the writer Maya Angelou once said, ‘If you don’t like something, change it. If you cannot change it, change your attitude. This is the view of Manager Sandisiwe Sakrowa of the station otherwise known as Radio L2K at the Lovelife Centre in KwaNobuhle.

The station which covers the 2km radius which broadcast in KwaNobuhle, some parts of the city centre and Despatch, started last year in October but was launched on Saturday at Shoprite Complex in front of a number of listeners who welcomed it.

“This is the station that is part of the R10 million Centre that Volkswagen built for KwaNobuhle Community as part of its CSI project,” said VW

Community Trust Manager Vernon Naidoo, adding that the project was part of their youth development strategy.

Listeners enjoy shows like “Morning Alarm”, “Touching Base”, “KuPhunyelw’eziko” and “Chilled Voice Experience” among others.

“We run an interactive programme where people use our Facebook page,” said presenter Ayanda Mhletywa, adding that with the launch, there are greater numbers of people they communicate with. “This means more people know about us,” he added.

Learners also get an opportunity to participate in the programmes and also get an opportunity behind the microphone.

This is a real school for the enthusiastic township folk, in line with Lovelife’s aims of empowering the youth with multi-skills.

Former TV presenter Anele to pursue career in Los Angeles FORMER NMMU student and BayTV presenter for the show “We R Loud” Anele Ngcizela (21) has recently returned from the USA after participating in the Applause Rising Talent Showcase (ARTS) in Orlando Florida last week.

She was placed second in high fashion runway modelling and third in TV commercial for her category. In November of 2012 Anele was awarded a scholarship and accepted for a course in film acting which also has classes that deal with aspects of screenwriting, directing and producing and she will begin her studies at the New York Film Academy (NYFA) LA campus in January 2014.

Anele was one of 7 contestants from PE who were scouted by Elsubie De Lange from JustYou artist and model management based in Johannesburg for the International Showcase at Montecasino where she was then scouted by international scout Kim Myers for ARTS. Although better known as a former TV presenter, Anele is also a model, dancer, actress and entrepreneur who organizes events around the Bay area for charity and young musicians, DJs and designers who want to expose their talent to the locals.

She was interviewed by LA agents and managers Gar Lester and Discover Management, who have A-list clients such as Jillian Rose from MTV’s “Awkward”. Anele will be heading to LA to pursue her dreams and studies this December.

An intimate night with Unathi follows recently after the launch and success of her latest release “With Love”. It was recorded at Unathi’s Heritage Day Celebration in 2012.

A benefit tournament in honour of a staunch football lover, youth developer and astute administrator Wine is currently taking place at Jabavu stadium, KwaNobuhle since 2 July. There are 32 teams that started and the final will be played this Saturday 20 July in honour of this living legend.

“We decided to run local Derbys. to attract football loving fans because utat’uWine deserves the best,” said Mhletywa.

The old horse has been around since the days of Udisbo and KwaNosa, when Uitenhage, Langa and Despatch played in separate leagues. He contributed in the formation of NODEFA and one of his clubs is involved in the tournament.

Wine will also be honoured with a Life Presidency of NODEFA. “In all his time of involvement, utat’ uWine has been contributing towards youth development. He loves junior football and is always on the field when they play,” said Mhletywa, adding that it also made sense to honour the old man as NODEFA is focusing on youth development to lay a solid foundation for the future of local football.

There are also netball games played in honour of Wine - as he also played a part in the development of the sport in the townships.

Mhletywa told PE Express Indaba that those that formed football clubs in the past, like Wine, also formed netball clubs, to keep both boys and girls off the streets, drugs and crime.

“There is a also a Fun Run taking place,” said Mhletywa, thanking Gerald Majola of Sedgars. Majola is going to sponsor the winners with kits while Local Football Associa-

tion’s (LFAs) presidents have agreed to pay R200 each towards the funds raised. He said they were hoping to raise R15 000 to buy something for Wine.

“I am humbled and overwhelmed. This is

indeed an honour I’ll always cherish,” said a delighted Wine.

“His whole life has been with football and I have been supporting him because he loves it,” said his wife, mama Veronica Wine.

Gunners’ ladies win Mustangs Prisms Interclub Womens Tourney SELBY MADIKANE CITY Lads Ladies Football Club won Mustangs Prisms Interclub Womens Tournament finals following their hard fought 1-0 victory over Manchester Babes at Victoria Park High School in Walmer recently.

However, the tournament started off with a round robin with the two top teams in the groups taking on each other in the semifinals. Gunners whacked the hosts Mustangs 3-1 in the semifinals while Babes also punished Sophakama 3-0.

In the finals Lads’ Nwabisa Kolisi’ solitary goal sealed the game in the favour of New Brighton lasses. In the third and fourth place Mustangs defeated Sophakama 4-3 on

penalty shootout after a fulltime goalless draw.

BSA looking for more female ring officials NCEBA DLADLA BOXING South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay is in the process of recruiting female boxing Ring Officials.

To this end, Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation (NMBABO) administrator Andiswa Nobaza has joined the profession-

al ranks as an official. Nobaza of Motherwell, joins KwaZakhele’s Noni Fukuthwa who has been a rose among the thorns for more than 10 years in the sport.

Accepting Nobaza’s application for registration, BSA Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza said BSA was recruiting the women folk in line with government’s call for representation.

Mapitiza said there were two other female recruits that he was busy training with Nobaza that he will unveil in the not too distant future.

Female boxers were authorised to enter the ring as boxers since 2005 and some like Noni Tenge and Unathi Myekeni went on to win World championship belts in their respective divisions. The likes of Gabisile Tshabalala and Nomandithini Ndyambo are national champi-

ons. This, however, is not seen in the country’s referees and judges, and that is a concern for BSA, according to Mapitiza.

“We cannot only have Siya Vabaza in East London, Noni Fukuthwa here, Sylvia Mokaila in Gauteng and that’s it. We need more women to come on board as ring officials as well as boxers, trainers, managers and promoters,” said Mapitiza.

Local businessman donates kit to a community team SELBY MADIKANE A KWAZAKHELE Township business man stretched his helpful hand to Dynamos FC in the form of kit recently.

This generous donation which consists of a set of kit and 23 sweaters was made possible

by Zola Manengela who is the owner of Zola’s

Place Tavern which is situated at Dynamos FC vicinity.

Speaking to PE Express Indaba Manengela stated that he decided to make that donation because he understood the plight of Dynamos FC. Manengela said, “I fully understand that this club does not have adequate resources to meet all its requirements, that is why I have

made up my mind to buy them this kit. Apart from that I do not want to see these boys involved in criminal activities. Every business has the responsibility to plough back into the community.”

Dynamos FC senior player Thembela Jabe told PE Express Indaba that they were overwhelmed and they would deliver more in the forthcoming season.

Hungry Lions showed that they were hungry for a win when they pipped Young Brothers 3-1.

Blackburn United had a black weekend following their 2-0 second loss to Zwide Celtics.

Young also collected another three points from their 2-0 victory over Everton. Hungry Lions hammered Young Killers 9-1 with Leeds United edging out Young Stars 5-3.

Callies earned a hard win SELBY MADIKANE LONDT Park lads Callies were given a run for their money when they earned a hard fought 1-0 victory over the brave Warriors at Londt Park on Friday evening.

Coming from a 4-1 morale boosting victory over Acemates, Callies were made to sweat for their win. The only goal of the
