Three toddlers’ deaths investigated
NCEBA DLADLA
T
HREE toddlers tragically died in separate incidents in Nelson Mandela Bay over the weekend.
Members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Uitenhage are investigating two inquests and a case of culpable
homicide after the deaths. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, a 17 months-old toddler, Joslynn Olifant, fell into and drowned in an uncovered stormwater drain in Grootboom Street, Greenfields, Uitenhage on Saturday September 13. “We have opened an inquest docket for investigation,” said W/O Seekoei on Monday.
According to a report in The Herald daily newspaper on Monday, the huge hole came about after the parents dug a hole with the intention of making a toilet. This was not completed and in the meantime rainwater filled the hole into which the little child fell. According to reports, the deceased child’s mother, Patricia Olifant blames the munici-
pality for her child’s death. It is understood that Patricia reported the drain to the municipality a number of times but it was never fixed. Nelson Mandela Bay Portfolio Chairperson for Infrastructure, Engineering, Electricity and Energy Cllr Andile Mfunda has launched a full-scale investigation into the matter.

K’Nobuhle residents talk about pertinent issues on Radio L2K NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE Community’s Radio L2K at the Love Life Centre, is touching base with local communities through the programme Touch-base, Loo nt’iyiyo from Monday to Friday between 9am to 12 noon. Programme host, Bulelani Jacobs, believes they touch on sensitive issues that affect the community, saying this is probably why they are growing in leaps and bounds in terms of listenership. Making use of resident specialists and professionals – like social workers, psychologists and clerics – the programme deals with issues that involve family relationships, gender-based violence, poverty, unemployment, sickness, HIV/Aids, abuse in its many ugly forms, youth challenges like sex and sexuality, unplanned pregnancy and sexually transmitted diseases. “We talk about real issues that affect our communities. People relate to the topics we bring, because they are the ones affected by these things,” said Ntsikie Sizani, the programme’s co-host, who is rather more mature than the youthful presenters of the show.
She said, “Our audience is that sister, mother and gogo who finds herself at home owing to unemployment, being sick or having to look after our homes and children. We are talking to the man and the woman in the taxi or those who are privileged enough to have a radio at work.” Ndomelele Mtakatana keeps listeners informed on local and international happenings through the news. “From 9:30am we present news headlines and on the hour, a full news bulletin,” said Mtakatana. According to Mxolisi Spaire, a gender-activist impintshi, people call the station to take part in the programme, while others use Facebook or Sms to interact with the programme. “Last week we had 2 715 likes on our Facebook page,” said Spaire proudly, adding that KwaNobuhle residents were now talking about patriarchy, domestic violence, gender-based violence and sexual abuse in a more profound way than they did in the past. “It is becoming clear now that people are aware of their rights and are prepared to talk about things that did not make them happy,” he said.
Correction On the front page of the Wednesday, August 20, edition titled “Garden of remembrance for councillors unveiled”, it was wrongly stated in paragraph 8, that the late Councillor Thabo Kobese’s family said they were amazed by the honour bestowed on their father. Kobese’s son, Thabo, said he was happy and grateful
to see a stone engraved with his father’s name. PE Express Indaba would like to apologise to the family as the stone was a dedication to the memory of the late Councillor Fikile Thomas Kobese who died in 1997 and Thabo Kobese is not the Councillors’ son but rather his nephew.
MEC Marawu hands over renovated schools

NCEBA DLADLA MEC for Transport, Roads and Public Works, Thandiswa Marawu, handed over renovated Solomon Mahlangu High and Melumzi Combined Primary Schools in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage last Friday. The delivery of the schools that cost the provincial government millions, was meant to coincide with the Public Service Month launch. MEC Marawu stated that education was a key priority for her government, hence they made the renovations possible to ensure that learners and teachers of both schools had conducive environments for teaching and learning. “We are hoping that the level of education offered at these schools would be of a high standard,” said Marawu, addressing members of her Department, Nelson Mandela Bay Portfolio Councillors and Officials, Education Department officials, Cacadu District Municipality officials, school principals, parents, teachers, learners, members of the public and the media at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall in KwaNobuhle Township. Marawu said the schools delivery came as a result of the cooperation between the De-
partment of Education and her Department. “As government, we are making sure that we get rid of mud schools and pre-fabs in the province. We are still going to continue helping our learners operate in a clean environment. A clean environment opens the minds and that would help the province improve its matric results,” said Marawu. She thanked the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality for its involvement, adding that they worked according to the Municipal Bylaws to ensure that they had the right specifications. Speaking to PE Express Indaba earlier, Ward Cllr Loyiso Stemele – who is a former learner at the school – said he and members of the community were overjoyed by the “R36 million” renovation of the school named after the great man, student leader and martyr, Solomon Mahlangu. “I want to thank the work of former Portfolio head, Mzolisi Mrara, who was instrumental in the project as well as former student leaders, Vuyani Alabaster and Phumzile Joseph, who are both no longer with us, “ said Cllr Stemele. He said a committee would be set up to ensure that members of the community jealously guard against break-ins at and vandalism of the school

ages in the province. “A school is a school because there is a teacher in front of the children. And therefore teachers, as part of Human Resource Development, one could never do without,” said former Portfolio head Makupula, choosing to replace the word Human Capital Development in his speech, because, he said, “Teachers were not commodities.” Makupula said they recognised the fact that there must be a teacher in front of all children in Eastern Cape schools.
Contrary to popular belief that the provincial government did not care for teachers and their development, Makupula – a former Maths and Science Teacher and member of the ANC and SACP – believes teachers are intellectuals and agents of change without which there could be no education. Speaking during the handover of the ICT equipment by Vodacom Foundation at the Teacher Training Centre in Struandale, Port Elizabeth last week, Makupula called teachers, part of Human Resource Development. He said, “You can buy a textbook to teach school children, but you can never buy a teacher! You can buy an engine to teach children engineering. But you can never buy an engineer! Human Resource Development is decisive,” noted Makupula. “As the education sector in this country, we have realised that the core business of the education department was to support and monitor schools, in order for schools to do their work. “The basic function of schools, is to ensure quality teaching and learning, and nothing else,” said MEC Makupula. According to the MEC, you can feed the learners or take them to sports fields or even organise scholar transport for them. Those are all support programmes. Three toddlers’ deaths investigated Continued from page 1 “I have asked the Executive Director of this Directorate, Walter Shaidi, to investigate the circumstances that led up to this tragic incident,” said Mfunda of little Joslynn’s death. Explaining, he said their interest as the municipality was in whether the Call Centre had in fact received a complaint about the open drain. He said, if that was true, he would like to know why no action was taken by the con-
cerned officials as it was a known fact that manholes were “hazardous to human lives.” This became evident from the incident where a baby girl drowned in an open trench, according to Mfunda who together with Shaidi visited the Olifant family. Furthermore, Mfunda sent his condolences to the family of the baby girl as well as the family of a 2-year old toddler from Kuyga who died in a pit toilet outside his home. Said Mfunda, “Although the second incident was on the private premises of the little girl’s family, it is always distressing when
such young lives are taken away from us.” In another case involving a 2 year-old baby boy, W/O Seekoei said they arrested a 57 year-old man for reckless and negligent driving including culpable homicide in Kamesh, Uitenhage on Sunday morning. The man allegedly ran over the 2-year-old toddler, Kiano Smith, who was crossing over Kamesh Road at the time. “The man was arrested and expected to appear before the magistrate court in Uitenhage soon, to face a case of culpable homicide,” said W/O Seekoei.

The synod looks at the constitution, finances, the policies, resolutions, diocesan reports and other important legislation that governs the church in these changing trends in the economy. It is the time for the church, the body of Christ, to reflect on the past and gauge the present as it moves forward, said Mokolopo. They will also ordain those called to serve the Lord as priests and deacons and robe mother priests and mother deacons during the service next Saturday. “As the EC Diocese we are more than ready to welcome about 700 delegates to the Synod. Armed robbers attack women steal cash and cellphone NEW Brighton armed robbery suspects fled successfully despite the chase and shouting by the New Brighton township women whom they attacked and robbed of valuable cellphones and cash in Kwazakhele at the weekend. According to New Brighton police spokesperson Constable Mncedi Mbombo, an unnamed 27 year-old woman was walking with her two friends from Sidindi Street towards 2010 Tavern at about 4.45 am on Sunday, September, 14. Seven unknown men jumped out of the vehicle, a Ford Laser and stopped the victims. According to Mbombo, the armed robbers threatened to shoot them if they didn’t want to give them money. “One of the women told them (the attackers) that they did not have money. Then the suspects started to search the ladies,” said Const
Mbombo. According to Mbombo, the suspects took the Blackberry phone and an undisclosed amount of cash from the victims and started driving off with their Ford Laser. “The ladies started to shout for help and soon the driver of a Quantum tried to help them to chase the vehicle. In the meantime, police were called and they also chased after the suspects,” said Mbombo. Seeing that the chasers were closing the gap and that arrest was looming, the unknown suspects stopped their vehicle and ran on foot in different directions. The Ford Laser with registration number CX 46006 was taken by police for safe keeping, according to Constable Mbombo. He said the police have opened an armed robbery case for investigation.

4 Mother’s Gift moves to Sisonke High School News
September 17, 2014 Indaba
NCEBA DLADLA THE non-profit organisation, the Mother’s Gift, in Kwanobuhle, now has a new address, said founder and head, Mama Sheila Isaacs. “Last week we have moved from our previous address at Mabandla Street to the new office at the old Sisonke High School at Nyiki Street,” said Mama Sheila. She thanked First National Bank (FNB) for making it possible for them to renovate the vandalised and unused school which the Departments of Education and Public Works offered to the Mothers Gift to use. The Mothers Gift runs a soup kitchen,
community development and self-help projects to benefit hundreds of unemployed, poverty-stricken and sick members of the community who would otherwise be hopeless. Even school going children come to the Mother’s Gift to get at least one hot meal a day. Mama Sheila said they had managed to put in windows, window-frames and doors among other things to kick-start the use of the school. “We are grateful to FNB. We now have turned a classroom into an office for the daycare for the elderly. Another office is used by home-based carers and the kitchen is
used for cooking our meals,” said Mama Sheila. She also thanked the Community Chest for a sponsorship which facilitated training for their 30 home-based carers whose services were also utilised by the Clinics at Mabandla Street and Silver Town. “To Community Chest’s CEO, Beaula Lunkwana, we’d like to say thank you,” said Mama Sheila.

LENNON BRINGS YOU HEALTH MATTERS
Awareness critical in the fight against prostate cancer WHILE prostate cancer does not receive the kind of public attention that some other forms of cancer do, it nevertheless impacts on tens of thousands of South African families of all races every year, including those of famous South African public figures, such as Nelson Mandela and Desmond Tutu. Professor Mohamed Haffejee, adjunct professor and academic head of the Division of Urology at the University of the Witwatersrand, who also practises at Netcare Milpark Hospital in Johannesburg said many South Africans know someone who is or has been struggling with this disease, which is the second most common form of cancer experienced by men, after lung cancer. No fewer than one in 23 South African men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives and it is important that the battle against this disease continues.” Dr Johan Venter, a urologist who practises at the Netcare Pretoria East Hospital, agrees. “More than 900,000 men worldwide are diagnosed with prostate cancer each year. Widespread and regular screening, early detection and improved treatment are allowing more and more men to survive prostate cancer. If the cancer is diagnosed early, while it is localised or still confined to the prostate gland itself, the five-year survival rate is almost 100%. It is therefore of critical importance that we improve awareness of this disease,” said Venter. He explained that the prostate is a walnut-sized gland that is part of the male reproductive system, producing fluid that is part of male semen. Prostate cancer occurs when abnormal cells grow out of control in the prostate gland. If left untreated, aggressive forms of this cancer may metastasise, or spread to other organs in the body, and become life threatening. Prof Haffejee said that it was important to note that patients with prostate cancer often experienced no symptoms whatsoever. For this reason he recommends that men over the age of 45 have annual screenings, so that signs of prostate cancer can be detected as early as possible. He recommends that men with a family history of prostate
cancer should be screened annually from the age of 40. If symptoms do occur, it may include the fol lowing: •Blood in urine •Trouble urinating •Sudden or urgent need to urinate •Waking frequently at night to urinate •Difficulty starting or stopping urine flow •Weak or interrupted urine flow •Pain during urination •Difficulty having an erection and/or painful ejaculations •Frequent pain or stiffness in the lower back •Unexplained weight loss
“There are a number of risk factors for prostate cancer, and it is important to note that men of all ages and races may develop the disease. However, advancing age is a particularly important risk factor, with older individuals having a much greater chance of developing the disease,” he noted. Dr Anesh Naidoo from Netcare Blaauwberg Hospital in Cape Town, said that prostate cancer could be detected using screening tests such as a digital rectal exam (DRE), a prostate specific antigen (PSA) test and a biopsy. During DRE, the doctor uses a gloved finger to feel for hard lumpy areas on the prostate gland. PSA is a simple blood test for signs of prostate cancer. If a man’s PSA level is high or has increased since his previous test, and irregularities in the prostate are detected, the doctor may call for a biopsy. During a biopsy the doctor will use a thin needle to extract small tissue samples from the prostate, which would then be tested in a pathology laboratory for signs of cancer. The treatment of prostate cancer continues to advance in leaps and bounds every year. According to Haffejee there is a wide range of treatment options available today. Treatment will depend on the type of cancer involved and whether or not the disease is localised to the organ itself or has spread beyond it. Treatment options for prostate cancer include radical prostatectomy — which is the complete surgical removal of the prostate — radiation, cryotherapy, brachytherapy, watchful waiting and hor-
mone therapy. Dr Marius Conradie, a urologist who practises at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital in Midrand said that for those cases in which the cancer is still localised to the prostate itself, radical prostatectomy, in which the prostate is removed, has the highest success rate of all the treatment options. Studies have shown prostatectomy success rates of between 76 to 98% for low risk disease; 60 to 76% for moderate risk disease; and 30 to 76% for high-risk disease. There are various ways prostatectomy can be performed today, including by traditional open surgery, minimally invasive laparoscopic surgery and minimally invasive da Vinci robotic assisted surgery, the latter being regarded internationally as a significant step forward over the current surgical gold standard for the treatment of localised prostate cancer. Da Vinci robotic technology has recently been introduced at Netcare Waterfall City Hospital in Midrand and Netcare Christiaan Barnard Memorial Hospital in Cape Town. “The introduction of the da Vinci technology by Netcare to Johannesburg and Cape Town is very exciting and provides urologists with a cutting edge new tool in the fight against prostate cancer. The da Vinci System features magnified three-dimensional (3D) high-definition (HD) vision and tiny instruments that rotate with greater dexterity than the human wrist. “These features enable the surgeon to operate with enhanced vision, precision and control. The da Vinci system enables surgeons who are proficient in its use to operate within finer margins with a reduced chance of leaving any cancerous tissue behind,” said Conradie. In addition, da Vinci prostatectomy patients usually experience a speedier recovery and shorter hospital stay. They are often able to start walking the same day as the surgery, because the tiny incisions result in minimal blood loss during the surgery and less post-operative pain. The lesser blood loss also means that the need for a blood transfusion is reduced.
What everyone should know about prostate cancer • One in 23 South African men will develop prostate cancer at some point in their lives. • According to National Health Laboratory Services (NHLS) and National Cancer Registry and Research, prostate cancer is the most common cancer to occur in black South African men and the second most common cancer in white men. More than 4,300 men are newly diagnosed and 2,000 men die from the disease each year. • Prostate cancer is often a slow-growing cancer, but it is possible for these cells to spread, or metastasise, outside the gland and into the lymph system and bones. • This cancer usually develops in men over the age of fifty, and most commonly in men in their sixties, seventies and beyond. • Many men who develop prostate cancer will never have symptoms, which is why regular screening is so important. • Men over the age of 45 should have regular check-ups, at least once a year. • The screening process should ideally include a rectal examination and a PSA blood test, both of which can help to indicate whether cancer is present. • While it is possible to have prostate cancer without symptoms, many men will experience symptoms such as blood in urine, frequent urination, difficulty starting urination and keeping it going in a steady stream, painful urination, more frequent desire to urinate at night, difficulty achieving an erection, painful ejaculation, unexplained weight loss, and/or regular lower back pain or stiffness. • There are three primary treatments: the surgical removal of the prostate (radical prostatectomy), brachytherapy and external beam radiation. In the case of older men, whose cancer is often slower to develop, doctors may recommend watchful waiting i.e. doing nothing but having regular tests to ensure the cancer has remained slow growing.

Vodacom opens an IT Teacher Training Centre in PE THE Department of Basic Education in partnership with Vodacom has opened an Information and Technology (IT) Centre at Algoa College Training Centre in Port Elizabeth last week as part of their commitment to transform education in South Africa. This made up to 40 ICT Centres with equipment and teacher-training materials Vodacom opened in the country and connecting up to 893 schools - with the aim of improving technology and Internet access in the rural and peri-urban communities as part of the redress of the past imbalances. “The centres are fitted with the latest ICT hardware and software, including whiteboards, internet connectivity and access to a dedicated teacher’s portal,” said Vodacom Regional Managing Executive Carol Hall, adding that they made this contribution of an IT resource centre, Vodacom’s living embodiment aimed at improving learner-performance in Mathematics and Science because education was their key focus area. This partnership between Vodacom and the
Education Department was seen as bringing in joy and a new revolution to education. Education MEC Mandla Makupula said this partnership would benefit teachers who are the change-agents. “We’ve got teachers of the 20th century teaching children of the 21st century. Then there’s a disjuncture there. This initiative is going to assist us. We must improve the skills and competencies of teachers to cross the technological bridge,” said MEC Makupula. He mentioned that today’s children were technologically advanced and able to teach their parents new things involving IT. “This initiative not only levels the playing field for previously disadvantaged schools that often do not have same quality of teaching materials that urban schools have, it also ensures that teachers, learners and communities have access to ICT and Internet Services,” said Hall, adding that as Vodacom, they expected members of the community to communicate with the centre management to find ways to use the centre to their own advantage. – NCEBA DLADLA

NCEBA DLADLA THE mood in the Chippa United camp is on a sky high since their convicing 2-0 win against Moroka Swallows in an Absa Premiership game played at Dobsonville in Soweto at the weekend. “The mood is very high. The win against Moroka Swallows brought stability and relief among the players. It is going to help us a lot going forward,” said the Chilli Boys
Public Relations Officer (PRO) Lukhanyo Mzinzi yesterday (Tuesday). This was their first emphatic win under the guidance of caretaker coach Roger Sikhakane. Mzinzi said they were overjoyed that the team was now able to score goals, something that has been eluding them in the matches they lost after giving opposition teams a run for their money. The two goals by David Zulu and Ugonna Uzochukwu sealed the game against Izinyo-
ni (Swallows) for the Nelson Mandela Bay elite football league outfit and took the side to ninth position on the log with seven points in six matches. This is following their outstanding performance and 2-0 win over Platinum Stars in their opening match of the season, a draw against Ajax Cape Town at home and defeats against Tshwane teams, Pretoria University and Supersport United at home and away. The Chilli Boys’ next account is against
the mighty Amabhaka-bhaka (Orlando Pirates) at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium on Saturday September 27 and Mzinzi believes Chippa Mpengesi’s team is gunning for yet another victory. He said, “We have never lost against Pirates. We beat them (away) in Orlando and played to a 2-2 draw in Cape Town in our first season in the Professional Soccer League (PSL). It must be known that we want to win all our home matches. Orlando Pirates will not come to spoil that for us.”

Roboshi, Mahala fight to be humdinger
NCEBA DLADLA THE fight between local Mini-Flyweight pugilists, Lonwabo Roboshi and Mziyanda Mahala, over six rounds at the Jeff Masemola Community hall in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage this Sunday September 21 could provide fireworks. The duo will lock horns in the Main Supporting bout of a National Boxing Tournament involving female fighters Nomampondomise “Lily” Xotyeni of KwaNobuhle and Durban’s Nomvelo Magcaba in a contest for the vacant South African Junior-Lightweight title over 10-rounds. While this is not the first time that a national title fight involving female boxers takes
place in Nelson Mandela Bay, the bout is expected to make history as it is the first time involving a local woman – and a win for Xotyeni would include her in the annals of history, at a time when there was not a single national professional boxing titlist in the Bay. It is brought by Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions. Encounters involving local fighters tend to become humdingers in KwaNobuhle, the township with a long boxing history.Uitenhage gave birth to great champions like Mzukisi Sikali, Mpisekhaya Mbaduli and Mthuthuzeli Nene who are all no longer with us, as well as Vuyani “The Wonder Boy” Nene. There is sadly, no champion here at this stage. It is boxers like Roboshi and Mahala who are expected to show their mettle in the fisti-
Coselelani grabs all-important victory SEBLY MADIKANE THE Motherwell High Schools League took another step forward in its quest towards developing township schools rugby on Wednesday.

Mfesane High School U/15 team gave Ndyebo High School a difficult assignment despite their 7-0 loss. In the last game of U/15 Division League Ncedo High School beat Vulumzi High School 17-5. Vulumzi High School started to push forward in the second half but their opponents defended tightly. In essence the game was enthralling as the fans thought that it might end in a draw. cuffs to bring back the lost glory days in boxing, when the sport used to be the darling of paying fans. “Roboshi could be challenging for the provincial Mini-Flyweight title,” said promoter Nkebe, adding that Roboshi was expected to put up a sterling performance against Mahala who himself would want to register his name as a contender (and not a pretender) to the throne. There will be five more bouts over four rounds and local Hip hop artist Azz Veritazz will entertain fans with music from on his upcoming album expected to be released in December. The first bout starts at 4pm. Admission is R50 adults and R20 children and registered boxers.
Camper, Ideas draw in spectacular game SELBY MADIKANE FANS watched what was described as SAFA MNB SAB Regional League spectacular game when Camper United shared the spoils 0-0 with Young Ideas at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Ideas’ midfielder Zolile Scout registered the first goal with his side dictating terms in the first half. But Camper came strongly in the second half. However, Sivuyile Kitsana’s well-taken goal rescued a 1-1 draw for Camper in their pulsating game. The draw has certainly frustrated Camper’s coach following their 4-1 drubbing by Callies a fortnight ago. But both coaches should walk tall as there were plenty of positives to take from both sides. Other SAFA NMB SAB Regional League re sults: *Royal Bucks 1-1 Fairview Rovers *Callies 0-2 Central Acemates *Island City 4-0 Ikamva Movers *Lion City 1-2 Hotspurs *Motherwell Academy 1-2 Highland Spurs *Peace United 2-2 Ghetto Stars *Showvillage 1-1 Despatch Pioneers

Zwide Pirates started the season on a high note when they overcame Real Crusaders.
