Miss SA tells Bay youth to dream big NCEBA DLADLA

“T

HE future belongs to those who believe in the beauty of their dreams”.

Sharing her favourite quote, by Eleanor Roosevelt, reigning Miss SA and former Port Elizabeth model, Ziphozakhe Zokufa (23), on Monday encouraged learners during her visit to her former schools in Nelson Mandela Bay. Recently returned from competing in the Miss Universe Pageant in Miami, Ziphozakhe (22) visited the schools she went to as a child accompanied by her mother, Feziwe Zokufa, is an educator. Among the schools visited were Willow Academy, an institution of the Word of Faith Ministries in William Moffett Expressway, Lorraine Primary School, Hill College and Ithembelihle High School in New Brighton where her mom is a teacher. During her visit to Willow Academy, where she studied Grades 1 and 2, Zokufa was greeted with much excitement and zeal by little children who were scrambling to take selfies with her. “She’s beautiful, talented and very smart,” said Karabo Orlyn (12) while Zoe Rob (13) observed that Zokufa “is so intelligent and down-to-earth. She doesn’t act like a celebrity.” This observation was also made by Ziphozakhe Grade 2 teacher at the school, Vanessa Janse van Rensburg who also commented that the beauty queen had amazing confidence that she did not see in her childhood. “I’ve come to say to aspirant models and hopefuls, it doesn’t matter where you come from. If you dream it, you can achieve it,” said Ziphozakhe Zokufa, who is a TV production student in Cape Town, was crowned the new Miss SA in December after Rolene Strauss won the Miss World title in London. Zokufa was her first princess. Among the first of her beauty pageant achievements was being crowned as Port Elizabeth Express Teen Miss PE in 2009. She said she relishes being crowned Miss SA which is a 24/7 job as the country’s ambassador who must espouse positive values to influence the youth. Ziphozakhe is based in Johannesburg for the duration of her reign which comes to an end in March with the crowning of the new Miss South Africa.

Career expo at Walmer High School today REPORTER GRADE 9 to 12 learners, from Theodore Herzl High School, Victoria Park High School and Walmer High School, will jump-start their school year at the Walmer Career Expo, which will take place at Walmer High School today. The expo is aimed at addressing the high youth unemployment rate in the Nelson Man-

dela Bay metro (47.6% - as estimated by Statistics South Africa) by assisting the youth to start planning for their future sooner rather than later. Over 25 exhibitors, through the collaborative effort of Ready4Life and Masifunde Learner Development, have come together to encourage and guide learners on opportunities available to them upon completion of their high school careers.

Motse Mfuleni: Youth must become agents of social change NCEBA DLADLA SUCCESSFUL local businessman Motse Mfuleni believes the branding of the youth as the future should be changed, as it was causing strain on young people later in life. Mfuleni, who is the Imbizo Group CEO and Chairman, said the youth should instead start preparing for the “now”, for the future starts now.

The exhibitors cover a wide range of sectors which include the automotive industry, construction, education and training, financial services, healthcare, legal services, media, public service, and telecommunications. All Grade 9 to 12 learners took part in 90 minute career guidance workshops yesterday ensuring that they were well prepared and armed with specific questions to interact productively with all exhibitors.

Ciza tha Journalist is making tha waves REPORTER WELL-known local hip hop artist, Ciza tha Journalist, might be the new kid on the block, but he is already making waves.

He was speaking at an event on NMMU’s North Campus which was arranged by Nedbank to help students open accounts as well as give them financial advice. Mfuleni said the advent of social media makes the world much smaller. “The youth must become the agents of social change using the very same social media,” he said. “They must not wait for government hand-outs but must leverage on social media to make the difference in their lives”. Mfuleni, who is also BayTV Board Chairman, gave the example of the late SABC TV presenter Simba Mhere, who died young but made a lot of impact in the lives of people - young and old - and yet he was not a politician. Mfuleni warned students to start immediately with spending and handling finance wisely, and not to wait until they enter the job market, as that might be too late. Mfuleni noted that many students are already in debt as a result of buying expensive clothes and gadgets that were never in their initial plans. “The other thing young people need is spiritual grounding. Spirit growth helps prepare people for unforeseen difficulties in life.” Mfuleni, who is a Loyiso High School alumnus, holds a Bachelor of Theology. “To be successful, people must know what they want, what they need do get there, and to focus. This must be done in phases. Do it step by step and make sure you do not buy things you can’t afford,” said Mfuleni.

Not only has he launched his new single “Always Cheat” recently, but his latest music video, which showcases Nelson Mandela Bay as a tourist destination and which was a hundred percent locally produced, debuted on SABC 1 on New Year’s Eve. It’s the expressive nature of his lyrical content and his way of “reporting” through music that sets Nigerianborn hip-hop artist, Ciza Tha Journalist apart from his counterparts. Ciza, Ex-Pilot, finds love of Hip hop music as his magnet to brighter life. Based in Port Elizabeth, Udo Jacob Esuene aka Ciza Tha Journalist’s music career took off seven years ago and he is known within the circles of hip-hop and spoken word in his now hometown, Nelson Mandela Bay. Ciza describes his music as “versatile, emotional and one which people can relate to”. Ciza says, “I enjoy telling real life stories through my music. Sometimes I rap or other times I sing. It all depends on what’s necessary to get the emotion across to my precious listeners.” Hence Ciza Tha Journalist. Ciza’s music is influenced

by hip-hop greats such as the likes of Eminem and Tupac, whom he admires for expressing their “emotions”. The highlights of Ciza’s career include sharing the stage with Busta Rhymes. . Elderly encouraged to age with dignity

Greenpeace’s Rainbow Warrior ship will dock in the PE harbour on Sunday. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

Greenpeace ship in Bay REPORTER

GREENPEACE’S iconic ship, The Rainbow Warrior, will arrive in Port Elizabeth Harbour on Sunday, February 22.

Members of the public will be able to tour the ship which is one of the most environmentally friendly ships ever built. The visit forms part of the ship’s tour of the South African coastline, as part of a Greenpeace campaign to highlight their stance that renewable energy investments are the solution to the current electricity crisis. Greenpeace Africa campaigns for a transition away from coal and nuclear energy and towards a clean energy future based on renewable energy in South Africa. “Welcoming the Rainbow Warrior in South Africa at a time when the country is threatened by stage 3 load shedding is really important for Greenpeace Africa,” said Greenpeace Africa Executive Director, Michael O’Brien Onyeka. “The country is in crisis, and it is clear that the solution to load shedding is not more investments in coal and nuclear, but in fact lies in removing the barriers to renewable energy. The ship will be used to highlight how renewable energy puts power back into people’s hands, and is already delivering on time and on budget,” said Onyeka. The new Rainbow Warrior is one of the most environmentally friendly ships ever built and is at the cutting edge of clean technology. She replaces the Rainbow Warrior II, which retired on August 16, 2011, after 22 tireless years at the campaigning front line and the original Rainbow Warrior, which was bombed in 1985. Onyeka said the original Rainbow Warrior is famous for helping to end nuclear testing in the Pacific, blocking coal ports and closing down destructive fishing operations. “Greenpeace Africa campaigns for a transition away from coal and nuclear energy and towards a clean energy future based on renewable energy in South Africa. “The return of the Rainbow Warrior is a true honour for Africa, and we are confident that this visit will empower Greenpeace Africa with the tireless spirit of the global orga-

der Merwe, adding that Nelson Mandela Bay were champions of the Eastern Cape while the EC province were the national champions. “For two consecutive years, we’ve been Golden-age Games Champions,” the gogo said, adding that apart from playing at Mbombela Stadium in Mpumalanga, they had also been to Sun City. “These are opportunities we did not get when we were young,” said Van der Merwe. MEC Sihlwayi said there was no reason why the elderly should allow themselves to suffer from diabetes, high blood pressure and ageing, while government provides them with care and support. The rights and socio-economic needs of older persons were highlighted during the event which was also held to recognise and honour. ‘We want you - the elderly - to age gracefully and with dignity. The Department of Social Development has many programmes that provide care and support for the elderly so that they are not the victims of abuse by their own children and society.” said MEC Sihlwayi. – NCEBA DLADLA ACVV elderly members with Marita van der Merwe showing their moves at Kuyga Community Hall last week.

ELDERLY persons should exercise to be healthy and to keep their bodies in shape as part of ageing with dignity. This is according to Marita van der Merwe (70), of the ACVV in Algoa Park who is a member of Ageing in Action. Van der Merwe was speaking during the MEC for Social Development Nancy Sihlwayi’s visit to Kuyga to encourage the elderly to keep living healthy lives. Van der Merwe also demonstrated some physical activity with enthusiasm that belies her age. She was literally jumping for joy showing both young and old some moves. “We play sport as members of ACVV and thanks to our government we’ve got an opportunity to play in the Golden Age Games,” said Van

Having the Rainbow Warrior here is a reminder to our leaders on the continent, that the time to act is now. We cannot, and we should not destroy our legacy to our children,” said Onyeka. The Rainbow Warrior will be open to the public for tours of the ship from 10am until 3pm on Sunday. For Greenpeace Africa, the tour is a way to say thank you to those who have supported the campaign for a South Africa that is powered by clean renewable energy. Social development MEC donates school uniforms THE MEC for Social Development, Nancy Sihlwayi, was in Kuyga in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality last week as part of their Back To School Campaign. The event was attended by school principals, councillors, Khoi/San Chiefs, representatives from the Council of Churches, IDAMASA, media and members of the community. “We are here to promote education. To encourage children to build their own future through education - the ladder for life,” said Sihlwayi, who was accompanied by officials from her department. The MEC made a difference in the lives of 200 disadvantaged learners in the district by giving them school uniform as a way of encouraging

them to remain focussed in school. The event was hosted by Ward 40, which is one of the poorest and most deserving of the wards, according to its councillor, Thozamile Qushani. He was elated with the fact that 66 learners of his ward benefited from the donation. The area around Greenbushes, according to Cllr Qushani, has areas like Mtsalane which were underresourced and struggling with basic services. Qushani said MEC Sihlwayi’s visit was giving hope to the residents. The MEC heard that Kuyga teachers were facing behavioural problems from the pupils but that the presence of SASSA and a visit by social workers once a week was making a difference. It was proposed that a full-time social worker

be employed to look into the problems of the pupils at the school - social problems which were coming from their homes. Sihlwayi advised that the councillor get the scientific assessment of the area from the municipality in order to ascertain what can be done to alleviate the situation in his ward. Parents also bemoaned the fact that there were no sport fields to cater for the children’s interest in sport, because not all of them would be successful academically, according to the parents. Ministers of religion were also tasked with finding a way in which they could be of assistance to the education and social development departments in a more coordinated and structured way. – NCEBA DLADLA

PROMOTIONS

ADVERTORIAL: BOSTON CITY CAMPUS AND BUSINESS COLLEGE

Boston opens the gateway to higher education OVER the past few years, South Africa’s matric pass rate has shown an increase – from 60.6% in 2009 to 75.8% in 2014. It, however, remains a fact that more often than not learners need to further their matric education in order to acquire knowledge and practical skills that, together with their matric, will allow them to enter the job market. Matric is a year fraught with tension, competition, and very hard work. Learners leave this year absolutely worn out and oftentimes illequipped to deal with the battles that lie ahead in terms of securing a viable future for themselves and their future families. “Thousands of matriculants do not pass with university exemption owing to various factors beyond their control”, says Natalie Rabson, Marketing Manager at Boston City Campus & Business College. “As an institution specialising in occupational and higher learning, we register many learners for further or higher education and we set them on a pathway to arm themselves with skills and make them work-ready. “Of course, many learners do not meet the entry requirements for various occupational and higher education programmes and I can tell you that from a counsellor’s point of view it can be very disheartening and frustrating”. Boston recognises that too many youth are not reaching their full potential at school and are not prepared to enter the job market. It’s for this reason that Boston has created a series of exciting access programmes, including a range of Higher Education Gateway Programmes offering prospective students various access options into tertiary education without the need to repeat Grade 12. “We started these programmes with a purpose of providing students a path that leads to credits awarded towards our various accredited and registered higher education programmes, as well as entrance to the career of their dreams, “says Rabson. Boston’s tertiary Gateway programmes offer a range of alternatives, including programmes such as Marketing Management, Business Management, Financial Accounting and Event Management to name but a few. These are bridging courses that can provide one access to higher education programmes at Boston. On successful completion thereof, they will have met the entry requirements to

a range of higher education Diplomas and secured future vertical access to a degree programme, achieved without having to redo Boston believes that, rather than repeating matric, a better option is to move forward with one’s tertiary education by completing a Gateway course. The advantages of participating successfully in a Gateway access route is that not only will one then have access to Boston diplomas (and degrees after that), but because there are various pathways one also gets a ‘taste’ of one’s chosen career and the opportunity to find out if it really is one’s preferred career choice, or whether one should be looking at alternative careers. For example, you may choose the marketing management gateway programme and decide marketing is not for you, but you really enjoyed the financial management side of things. Then you also get a taste of the time, commitment and effort involved in tertiary or higher education, and you can see if you are suited to something that is very academic or perhaps whether you should investigate a programme that is more practically oriented towards a specific occupation Continuing with your chosen career path into the original degree or diploma of your choice, will further give you a head start of credits towards your degree or diploma. “A good education system ensures not only the development of human endeavours, but guarantees the maintenance of adequately functioning social, political and economic systems. Over the past few years, the country has seen a doubling of the education budget, yet the resources invested have not resulted in a dramatic increase in the quality of education and the merit attached to a matric certificate. While government alone might not have the solution, we at Boston believe that this dilemma must be made a national challenge that invites tertiary institutions to step up. Our learners deserve a chance at higher education, and a chance to prove themselves. In establishing the Gateway Programme they have now been given that chance,” concludes Rabson. For more information contact Boston City Campus & Business College on 014 363 0778 or visit their support centre in Ring Road, Greenacres. They are situated on top of the Clearouts and Jumbo shops.

Authorities at loggerheads about heavyweight bout NCEBA DLADLA THERE seems to be no end in sight to the fracas involving four boxing heavyweights fighting for the same title in two different venues. Port Elizabeth’s Walmer-based Sithembele August beat Unathi Jacobs for the EC Heavyweight title in a tournament held in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage a day after Donovan Luff beat Vusumzi Mlindwa for the same title in East London. This remains a bone of contention. This

problem suggests that there is no proper communication between Boxing South Africa (BSA) Port Elizabeth and East London offices as both August and Luff call themselves the champions. “I want to state it on record that when we fought Unathi Jacobs, the EC Heavyweight champion on 13 December, we signed a contract that said we were fighting for the title,” said Ndumiso Fina, who trains August. “I am the EC heavyweight champion. I knocked out Jacobs, the champ. I can still fight Donovan Luff for the title,” said August, adding when he said he could fight Luff any

time, that should not be construed to mean he accepted that Luff was the champion. Fina is not happy too that his boxer in now ranked number two in SA, below Luff, while the latter is regarded by BSA as the EC heavyweight champion. “Every time I am to supervise a fight, I give contract approvals to Phakamile Jacobs (BSA Eastern Cape Service Provider). He himself never mentioned to me that he was organising a fight with two other heavyweights contesting the title. “Luff and Mlindwa are not even in the latest EC ratings Phakamile Jacobs compiled.

He erred, he must take responsibility,” said BSA Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza, adding that of course, he had initially planned to cancel the Jacobs-August fight because Jacobs was not registered until the eve of the fight. “Unathi Jacobs did not receive a letter (from BSA) stripping him of the title,” argued Fina. “We did not have to give Jacobs any letter. He was not registered (in time) until registrations were closed. A fight between Luff and Mlindwa came about because the title was vacant,” said Jacobs.

Skirt or no skirt, these men are playing netball THAMSANQA MBOVANE THEY see it as a great opportunity to think fast, act fast and move very fast. Despite the fact that netball is a womendominated sport, these men from KwaNobuhle LoveLife Youth Centre just love it. The four members of the Nakanjani Netball Club, established early in 2013, are confident that soon they’ll be one of the top netball clubs in the metro. The team, which needs eight more male members to spring into action, spend quality time every day stretching muscles and sweating on the field. They are also official netball coaches, referees and they can be seen blowing a whistle at many of the women’s netball matches.

Team spokesman Matase Zendile said; “We want to change the mentality that netball is a sport for women only. Men can also play it. We play the sport wearing short pants instead of skirts. We want to take this team to the league and bring victory to our kasi (township).” His fellow player, Stevey Mthengenya, said, “In Uitenhage we are the first men to establish a netball team comprising men only. We are positive about what we are doing. There is no turning back!” He said sponsorship was the only problem. “We want more men to come and join us as we want to be a 12 member team. “Secondly, we need sponsors for balls, kit and tracksuits because we believe this sport can take men off the streets and out of crime, and have a positive spirit. “We are very proud of playing netball!

YOUNG Ideas’ hopes of winning the SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League title were kept alive in their hard-fought 2-0 win over Ikamva Movers at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Following their 3-2 first round loss, Movers looked sharp and threatening but Ideas were equal to the task. Movers’ setback occurred when their goalkeeper fouled Ideas wing Freedom Funani inside the box. The whistle man awarded a penalty to the attacking side, with Ideas defender Siyabulela Willy Ngqiyaza scoring the penalty. Movers, however, lost ball possession in the midfield, thus allowing their counterparts to take the game to them. Tourney honours legacy of former boxer, Nelson Mandela NCEBA DLADLA

of Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO), the tournament was sponsored by the Mandela Bay Municipality’s Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Directorate. “This is the third year in succession that we have sponsored this open boxing tournament because we are aware of its development aspect in the community. This is also to honour the legacy of the great statesman, Nelson Mandela, who himself was a star boxer in his youth,” said Director Charmaine Williams. Williams was encouraged by the interest

NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality had a boxing tournament at the weekend to develop the sport and honour the legacy of former State President Nelson Mandela. The tournament was held at the Sizakele Konzi Community Hall in KwaNobuhle last Saturday. Organised by Nelson Mandela Metro Amateur Boxing Organisation under the auspices

shown by both male and female participants in the sport, she said. “But I am equally encouraged by the interest shown by those young fans sitting around the ring as they could be elsewhere doing some mischief, were it not for this boxing tournament,” the former municipal councillor said. The tournament was blessed with the presence of Eastern Cape Sports Confederation president Khusta Magada and ECABO Secretary Sonwabo Nogqala. It pitted the best amateur boxers in the metro

and some of the best from Sarah Baartman District Municipality to provide the crowds with exciting bouts that kept them on their feet. Young lads, T. Nene (KwaNobuhle) and S. Gunguluza (Port Elizabeth) provided fight fans with the best bout of the afternoon. Nene won the bout of points. In the true development spirit of the sport, referees and judges were qualified ECABO officials whereas a medical team from Relay Ambulance Emergency Services was on guard to ensure the safety of the young pugilists.

Tuks face Brazilians in the MDC finals SELBY MADIKANE UNIVERSITY of Pretoria are set to face Mamelodi Sundowns in the Multichoice Diski Challenge finals which will take place at The Nike Football Training Centre at Pimville in Soweto on 28 February. Tuks surged to win with 3-2 in penalties over Supersport United following their 1-1 regulations time score in their semi-finals. Sundowns secured a 2-1 victory from Mpumalanga Black Aces in their semi-finals at Isaac Wolfson Stadium in KwaZakhele on Sunday. Supersport United, affectionately known as Amatsantsa a Pitori, looked to be favourites in the first half but Tuks’ line of defence was solid. United scored a spectacular goal courtesy of Kwanele Zulu in the 24th minute following poor clearance by Alan Robertson.

Tuks replied with a header by Dikgang Ngcobo in the 35th minute following a well- taken corner by Sifiso Nzimande. Tuks’ goal stopper Lebogang Ngubeni saved many dangerous balls. Tuks could have avoided extra time but their midfielder Siphelele Luthuli’s thunderous shot in the 87th minute was parried by United’s goalkeeper Dumisani Msibi. Former Orlando Pirates product and star and Sundowns player Lebohang Mokoena failed to beat Aces goalkeeper Cyrie Mollo in the 16th minute as he sliced his shot wide. Aces could also have registered an early goal but James Bell’s shot camejust wide of Sundowns goalkeeper’s goal. In the 54th minute Mokoena was the first player to bang in a goal on his account. Aces levelled the score in the 62nd minute when Judas Moseamedi rounded a defender. Mokoena’s 73rd minute strike shattered AmaZion’s hopes of reaching the finals.

Chilli Boys share the spoils with the Team of Choice FOLLOWING their midweek 2-1 loss to the University of Pretoria, George Akpabio helped Chippa United to share a 1-1 draw with Maritzburg United in their PSL clash at Isaac Wolfson Stadium on Saturday. Chilli Boys played good entertaining football against the strong wind and the Nigerian striker Akpabio failed to connect a nifty pass from Siyabulela Shai to the goals of United’s goalie Virgil Vries in the 17 th minute. Maritzburg midfielder Nhlanhla Vilakazi’s shot did not disturb the homeside goalkeeper, Mbongeni Mzimela, who collected it with ease in the 20th minute. Following good play by Manti Moholo, a long-awaited goal was scored by Akpabio in the 28th minute which sent the fans into raptures . Sipho Mthule, William Thwala, Shai Chippa United midfielder William Thwala is about to be tackled by a Maritzburg United defender.

and Moholo played well as a unit. In the 58th minute Vilakazi’s powerful shot could not beat Mzimela who parried it away. Chilli Boys played defensive football while they had wind advantage in the entire second half. Maritzburg meant business as the Bay side seemed to be quite content with a slender lead and they camped in their territory for almost the entire second half. Maritzburg’s attacking football silenced Chilli Boys’ hundreds of supporters. Kurt Lentjies, Ryan de Jongh and Veluyeke Zulu frustrated Chilli Boys. Maritzburg super substitute Terrence Mandaza salvaged a point for his side when he replied with a goal in 79th minute. Andile Mbenyane could have put Chippa United ahead but his shot went wide in the 83th minute. – SELBY MADIKANE
