Indiphile is PE Express Indaba’s Christmas Baby

Runnersup of Front page Christmas Baby

NCEBA DLADLA PE Express Indaba baby Indiphile Sonkqayi was a blessing from God, according to her mother Ntombentsha Sonkqayi. Born on 29 May 2013, the joyful and ever smiling Indiphile is Ntombentsha’s second child and the first born of Mthunzi Matikinca. The couple is from New Brighton in Port Elizabeth. “I was surprised to realise in six months that I was pregnant with Indiphile. I could not believe it,” said Ntombentsha whose first born child Thembelani is already 20 years old. “She being his first-born child, Mthunzi loves Indiphile a lot. He likes to spend time with her and they enjoy each other’s company,” revealed Ntombentsha. Ntombentsha’s mom gave the child the name Indiphile - a name which acknowledges that the child is a gift from God. “Indiphile is such a pleasure to be with. She is always playful and happy. A mere mention of her name, and she smiles,” said Ntombentsha, adding that the only time Indiphile cries is when she’s hungry.

“I breast-feed her then it’s peace and quiet again,” said the unemployed mother proudly. Ntombentsha does piece-jobs for a living. She said, “I am so happy that Indiphile won this PE Express Indaba Baby’s competition. Perhaps she’s going to be a professional model who’ll save us from this poverty that we’re in presently. Otherwise, I wish she could become a lawyer or a social worker when she’s older.”

THE runnersup of the PE Express Indaba Christmas Baby Competition are first runnerup Qhayiyalam Zokufa (left), who won a R750 Pier 14 Shopping Voucher and Olungaka Gwanzula (right) who won a R300 Pier 14 shopping voucher.

Church members close the year with a braai NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the ESH Skosana Memorial Youth in KwaZakhele had a closing party in Summerstrand at the weekend. According to organiser Nomthunzi Mooi, the braai was a thanksgiving to members after what has been a busy year. The party was therefore aimed at giving themselves a pat on the back for working and praying together, accord-

ing to Mooi. She said, “Both the chairperson Nombulelo Kula and Secretary Thembisa Qila acknowledge that we worked so well together during this year which had its ups and downs.” According to Mooi, the Edwards Memorial youth members joined them during the merry-making and great fun was had by all. She said her branch, ESH Skosana, and that of Edwards are joined to form SKODWARDS which has a long and illustrious history worth celebrating.

Coega interns embrace Madiba legacy REPORTER Coega Development Corporation’s interns spent Friday, 6 December – the day the world woke to news that beloved icon Nelson Mandela had passed away – giving back to the local community at the Ilingelabantu Children’s Home in Kwazakhele. Here the interns did repair work, cleaned up and painted the home, and brought joy to the children by giving gifts of educational toys. They also had a braai for lunch and handed over groceries. Coega Development Corporation Head of Marketing and Communications, Ayanda

Vilakazi, said Coega’s interns adopted the home in 2009 as their corporate social investment (CSI) project, but this year the planned visit sadly held special meaning, coinciding with news of Madiba’s death. “The interns paid special tribute to Madiba and his commitment to Ubuntu by following his example and acknowledging his love for children,” said Vilakazi. Vilakazi said the children at the Ilingelabantu Children’s Home are from the surrounding township areas of Njoli, Seyisi and Kwazakhele. The children are between the ages of two and 18 years and some have lost their parents to HIV/Aids while others face daily challenges of extreme poverty.

NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth woman, whose husband is a male nurse, says her family would have a black Christmas this year unless caring South Africans helped them in their serious predicament.

The woman, who prefers to remain anonymous, claims her family had been adversely affected by the transfer of health services from the municipality to the province through a process called Provincialisation. “My husband is one of the personnel of the metro who were transferred (to Bhisho) with all administration, and who in the process lost major benefits - monies that were needed in our financially stressed out family,” said the mother of two teenage children. She is unemployed. According to her, her husband lost Medical Aid benefits, UIF, Group Life Insurance, Pension Fund, Locomotion and Car Allowances. Explaining, she said her husband who works as a supervisor lost almost R11 000 in his monthly pay, and that has caused a lot of strain in the family, she said. “We don’t have money to pay our bills that include children’ school fees, or buy food. We cannot even maintain our car. In fact it

is also in arrears,” she said sobbing. She showed this reporter a list of letters demanding payment of arrears including a R10 000 water bill. Jacobs sent letters of complaint to the Health Minister Dr Aaron Motsoaledi (in April), Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Ben Fihla (in May) and the Provincial Health Department a couple of times since June. She also wrote letters to the ANC and the DA, asking for their intervention. It is only the mayor who wrote back, acknowledging receipt of her communication while the minister did not respond. The province’s HR was sending her from pillar to post, without anything tangible, she claimed. According to her, nurses in the district were resigning in numbers as a result of this and those who were prepared to fight the system were being silenced until they consulted legal counsel. “But those who don’t have funds to pay for lawyers are suffering silently as their families are destroyed by this,” according to her. She urged members of the community “to donate money and form a Trust Fund that will enable metro nurses to find a lawyer to help them fight this exploitation and abuse of power. Otherwise, we’ll all be facing a black christmas,” she said.

Good year for Mandela Bay Boxing - Mapitiza NCEBA DLADLA BOXING in Nelson Mandela Bay had a good and productive 2013, according to Boxing South Africa (BSA) Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. “We have survived. This was not a better year compared to last year in terms of the number of fights. However, we produced more quality boxers this year than the previous years,” said Mapitiza. Mapitiza thanked the provincial Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture (DSRAC) for providing sponsorship to develop professional boxing - a move that benefited at least four Nelson Mandela Baybased boxing promoters in the financial year ending in March 2014. “We have Lusindiso Siyo to vie for the WBA Pan African Super Flyweight crown

against East London’s Lwandile Sityata at the Orient Theratre on January 26. “Unathi Jacobs has been approved to challenge for the South African Cruiserweight title,” said Mapitiza, adding that the current EC Heavyweight champion Jacobs, who won the title against the then defending champion Ivan Strydom on a First Round Knock Out (KO) and successfully defended it on KO 1 against Sithembele August at the weekend, has the potential to bring the national crown to Nelson Mandela Bay. Mapitiza mentioned Kwazakhele township pugilist Masixole Botile who put up a sterling performance in his closely contested points loss to the SA Super-middleweight champion Balimo Weliya in East London, last month. He said he was also pleased with a number of women boxers who registered

with BSA and managed to get fights. “We had a good year with many more highs than lows,” said Mapitiza, citing as the lows a boxing licensee - a manager that on separate occasions took two boxers serving 90-days suspension (owing to having been knocked out in their previous fights) to fights in Cape Town and East London. “The manager knew about the regulations. We suspended him. Luckily it was the only stable involved.” Mapitiza noted the talents of Asandiso Mancapa and Zimkhitha Lane in the ring. The duo, he said, have the right movements and agility required. With the right trainers, he said, some talented local boxers could reach for stardom. “In the main, I think this year proved that we still need quality trainers to help our talented boxers reach for stardom,” said Mapitiza.
