Local presenter joins SABC national news NCEBA DLADLA

LOCAL news presenter will soon appear on national television after she has been appointed by the SABC in Johannesburg.

BAY TV 1-City news presenter Lisakhanya Pepe will be joining SABC Television News as the face of 1pm isiXhosa News from 2 July.

An overjoyed Pepe (28), known as Lisa to a myriad of local fans, will be moving to Johannesburg to start her dream-come-true career as a national television news presenter.

“I am extremely excited. This is a dream come true. I am happy more than words can say,” Lisa told PE Express Indaba last week.

The likable Lisa, who was born in Alice, received the good news of her appointment from SABC Television News executive producer Masakhane Ngcangatha recently.

In fact, it was Ngcangatha himself who phoned Lisa and informed her of the auditions after he saw her clip on Bay TV which is broadcast on DStv Channel 260. He monitored her for two weeks, and was impressed.

I won’t be going there to compete with anyone – I am just going to be myself. I’ll be going there to represent good values of news telling in my own way - to make people understand.

“Of course, working alongside this experienced duo will be an honour. I have been watching and learning from them throughout the years.”

Lisa is following in the footsteps of another Bay TV star Luthando Shosha who now presents the Music Show Live Amp on SABC1 at 9pm every Friday.

She will be presenting her last news-slot on Bay TV this Friday, June 21.

Libraries’ doors remain closed REPORTER

WITH school holidays fast approaching, doors

remain closed at all libraries across Nelson Mandela Bay as library staff are still on a goslow action pertaining to internal personnel issues.

Libraries in the Metro usually offer jampacked school holiday programmes with various activities to keep children occupied dur-

ing the day.

The go-slow action by library staff in effect means that library-goers cannot exchange books nor make use of any other library services and facilities.

According to Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Communications Director, Marthie Nel, library staff are disputing about issues such as re-evaluation and job grading.

“This go-slow has been experienced in municipal libraries since the beginning of June

around issues such as the re-evaluation of staff positions, in terms of which the libraries have had to close their doors to the public,” Nel said.

“The issues are strictly Human Resourcesrelated and there is no telling when exactly libraries will open their doors again.”

Nel said that no fines would be imposed on library members whose books fell due during the period of the go-slow. Readers whose books fell due before this period, however, would be expected to pay the late penalties.

At the time of Port Elizabeth Express going to print on Monday, the unions and the relevant municipal directorates were still busy negotiating the dispute.

“We hope and trust that the issues will be resolved before the end of this week so that library services can resume as soon as possible.

The Municipality wishes to apologise to residents for any inconvenience caused and will keep them informed of developments,” Nel said.

It’s business as usual at Nelson Mandela Bay Customer Care Centres, customers told NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Customer Care Centres and banking halls that were closed owing to a municipal worker strike are now open and able to assist residents in doing their business.

This was confirmed by municipal acting communications Director Martie Nel yes-

The Care Centres were closed last week after municipal employees left their work stations as a result of unhappiness on some labour issues.

According to Nel, the agreement of getting back to business was reached at a meeting held in a cooperative spirit last Wednesday between the Acting Chief Financial Officer (CFO), the management of the Budget and

Treasury Directorate, Human Resources representatives, Unions SAMWU and IMATU and leadership and staff representatives.

She said deliberations were on issues that include staff regrading for all members; including those working on counters, as well as cashiers; the acquisition of protective clothing and uniforms for employees working in the Assistance to the Poor Programme (ATTP) and Casual Allowance and Fixed Lo-

comotion allowance for ATTP staff.

On Thursday all the municipal care centres were in operation except for Mfanasekhaya Gqobose Building in Govan Mbeki Avenue. The building formerly known as Eric Tindale was still closed owing to the labour unrest.

NMB launches IPTS Project in Uitenhage NCEBA DLADLA

NELSON Mandela Bay Executive mayor Benson Fihla launched the Integrated Public Transport System (IPTS) Modal Interchange Project at the corner of Lower Drostdy and Durban Streets in Uitenhage last week Wednesday.

The event was attended by members of the metro municipality’s executive directors, local councillors, business executives, officials from the municipality, UDDI, representatives of the taxi industry and members of the community.

Councillor Fihla said during the launch the event signals the implementation of a topclass transport system and a legacy of the 2010 South Africa Soccer World Cup which marked the beginning of the metro municipality providing commuters with a safe, reliable and affordable transport.

Although about 60 taxis have already been taken off the road since the beginning of the IPTS, with state-of-the-art buses bought before the World Cup in operation around the city, it has been confirmed that there will be no job losses with the launch of this multi-million

rand project.

“It is now our responsibility to ensure that the residents of Nelson Mandela Bay - especially the poorest of the poor - enjoy the full implementation of a system that will create many job opportunities and change our experience of a public transport for the better,” said Fihla.

So far, 900 jobs had been created while a further 108 temporary jobs were created for the ambassadors plus 14 field workers and 18 operators.

“I am so glad to inform you that it is estimated that this ANC-led municipality will be creating 450 new jobs with the Stanford Road construction works alone,” said Fihla, adding that many more construction jobs would be created when work started at Njoli, Motherwell and other areas.

Uitenhage and District Taxi Association Secretary Siyanda Mbanjwa confirmed that as taxi operators they were fully supportive of the IPTS Modal Interchange Project which will allow for the development of an economic hub centred on the modal interchange.

“We’ll not hold the city to ransom. We support the initiative as long as every body is taken care of,” said Mbanjwa.

School girls learn more about police careers during Youth Month

Coega takes driver training to new level IN a first for the Eastern Cape, the Coega Development Corporation (CDC) has broadened its driver training programme to include customised training – and driver simulators – for people with disabilities.

The programme was launched in May at Coega, but has been in pilot phase for a number of months. The Association for People with Disabilities (APD) welcomed the programme’s advance as indicative of the organisation’s commitment to non-discriminatory development.

“Mobility adds a new dimension to the life of persons with disabilities. Independence to get from A-to-B has been a long forgotten dream for most people with disabilities. Now CDC is helping to make this dream come true,” said Brian Bezuidenhout, head of the APD in Port Elizabeth. “Through this personal independence and employment opportunities become a reality.”

Bezuidenhout said APD was reaching out to the disability sector to ensure the opportunity reaches as many people with disabilities as possible.

“We started by offering the opportunity to relevant candidates within our 120 staff contingent at our headquarters and the APD Day Care Centre in Motherwell,” said Bezuidenhout. “Within the first two months, 11 people obtained their learner’s licence and are now being trained to do the driver’s licence test.

“We are also proud to announce that June Bouah – our auxiliary social – is the first person with a disability within our group to obtain her licence to drive a vehicle with hand controls.”

He added that another 18 people would be commencing their learner licence training next week.

The official launch of the programme also doubled as a recognition ceremony for those people with disabilities that had successfully completed the training.

fore I started with these classes I felt that the goal of obtaining my drivers’ licence would not be possible. I thought I would perhaps get my learner’s licence and that is where it would end.

This changed once I started attending the classes. Seeing the enthusiasm of the facilitators wanting to empower me gave me a whole new view of the fact that this would become a reality.

“The Coega driving training programme empowers persons with disabilities as it provides us with a golden opportunity to obtain a driver’s licence. Such opportunities are rare as there certainly aren’t many driving schools that cater for persons with disabilities.”

Schrieff, who recently completed her learner’s licence through the Coega driver training also experienced driver simulator training and is currently en route to her drivers’ licence.

“I am confident that I will receive it by the end of this year. As a person with a disability I understand the need to feel independent, and through this programme, I am able to gain more of that freedom. It is no longer just a vague dream.

“Sitting in the learners’ classes, attending the simulator classes and being behind the wheel of a motor vehicle, knowing that one day that goal and dream will be achieved is the chance of a lifetime in the life of a person with a disability.”

The CDC has invested heavily in its driver training programme, with a view to skilling unemployed graduates and youth with driving skills.

“We are trying to assist in breaking the barrier to entry for employment for unemployed graduates, by training future drivers as part of our focus on skills development and corporate social investment,” said Ayanda Vilakazi, CDC spokesman. “This extends to all people in the Eastern Cape, and we are hugely proud to be enabling people with disabilities also to achieve this basic skill which will open doors for them in the employment market.”

Tenders invited for roads to Bay West Mall IN another leap towards realising the R1.7billion Bay West super regional mall in Port Elizabeth, the South African National Roads Agency (SANRAL) has called for tenders for the development of the sought-after Redhouse-Chelsea Interchange road network.

According to city planners, the development of the R250-million road network has been called for by residents since the early 2000s to alleviate increasing traffic congestion in the city’s western suburbs and to unlock economic growth.

Provision to accommodate the city’s Integrated Public Transport System has also been made.

The network will connect Walker Drive with Old Cape Road, via an interchange over the N2 which will allow mall visitors access from the freeway.

According to Aecom engineer on the project, Gerrie Albertyn, who oversaw the successful construction of the city’s R2.4-billion Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium, construction of the road network was specifically designed to protect environmentally sensitive areas.

“There will be a bridge to the southern side of the N2 which will be built specifically to protect the environmentally-sensitive cyclopia plant species, which are situated in a wetland area,” Albertyn said.

“There will also be another structure built to elevate the road in order to protect a rare frog species.”

A bridge over the Baakens River would also be built as part of the development, he said.

The routes would also be pedestrianfriendly and have cycle paths throughout, to accommodate non-motorised transport.

“The project is currently out on tender and the tenders close on July 1,” said Michael Kaiser, SANRAL Southern Regions construction manager. “The intention is to get SANRAL Board Approval by mid-August.

The award of the contract to the successful tenderer would follow immediately to enable the contractor to establish in the second half of August this year.

The development of the road network is set to be wrapped up by March 2015, to coincide with the completion of the construction of the mall.

Bay West City managing director Gavin Blows said the road network would also be a boost for employment in the region.

“The new road network will not only bring the region to our doorstep, but will also accelerate the residential and commercial growth of this part of the metro,” Blows said.

The construction of the mall, which is set to open its doors in early 2015, will create about 10 000 jobs created during the construction phase - 3 000 through direct employment and more than 7 000 indirect and induced jobs. A further 1 500 permanent jobs will be created to staff 250 retail outlets in the 87 500m² shopping centre.

Vodacom Millionaires opens computer centre at disadvantaged school NCEBA DLADLA GQEBERHA High School in Govan Mbeki Township, Port Elizabeth has a fully equipped Computer Centre with internet access, thanks to Vodacom Millionaires.

The mobile communications company’s bid to improve the standard of education in the Eastern Cape is aimed at making a huge difference in the lives of children from this poverty stricken area who would otherwise not be able to access computers until they

passed matric.

Vodacom Millionaires gave the school 20 laptops for learners, one laptop for an educator, an interactive white board, a projector, a server, printer, cartridges and 700 Megabytes (MB) of monthly data.

“While a computer centre cannot alone meet all the needs of the school, Vodacom believes it can add real value when used as a tool for learning,” said Vodacom Chief Officer: Corporate Affairs Maya Makanjee.

Makanjee added that the educational software and training provided to the teachers would ensure that the learners could use the computer centre to its full potential.

Both learners and teachers at the school are excited about the centre and the training provided. “We are ecstatic. This is going to make a big difference in the lives of our children especially since they will now not end up in matric without knowledge of Information Technology,” said a delighted school principal Nomhle Njezula.

Njezula thanked teacher Zoleka Zamisa for entering the Vodacom Millionaires competition which resulted in her school receiving this major educational boost, although Zamisa has since been redeployed to another school.

Njezula said learners struggled to get enough information for assignments and projects but with this good gesture from Vodacom they would “navigate and get as much information as possible.

“We are also proud to have Mbulelo Mdyogolo who is very diligent in making sure that the learners are comfortable using computers,” said Njezula.

ADT Security will ensure that the Computer centre is safe and secured. She added that members of the SAPS, the Community Police Forum and Social Development had a structure that looks after providing security to the school.

Mummy shared the spoils with Zwide United RFC SELBY MADIKANE IT was a do-or-die clash when Motherwell RFC played to a 10-10 draw against Zwide United RFC during their Eastern Province Rugby Union Section B League match at Motherwell Rugby Stadium last Saturday.

Zwide United exerted more pressure on Mummy right from the outset. Hard work paid dividends to United as their scrumhalf Simamkele Mteto scored and converted his try to take his side to a 7-0 lead.

The hosts were, however, determined not to

let their hundreds of supporters down. Motherwell were awarded a penalty which was taken by their flyhalf Soma Kobese, thus reducing the deficit to 7-3.

The home-side fans were ecstatic when their wing Seleb Mielies scored an unconverted try which increased the scoreline to 10-7 in favour of Motherwell.

In return the visitors got their fans on their feet when Mteto took the penalty to level the final score 10-10. In the Reserves League Section Motherwell hammered Zwide United 27-8, while Motherwell B edged out Zwide United 24-10.

Bees Boxing tournament honours former boxing greats with medals NCEBA DLADLA THE development boxing tournament featuring Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation (NMBABO) Clubs organised by Bees Boxing Club of KwaNobuhle on Saturday was a resounding success.

This is according to the club’s manager Michael Mbekisa who is the NMBABO Secretary and the secretary of the amateur boxing structure in KwaNobuhle.

“We made history by having 48 bouts that were all fireworks,” said Mbekisa proudly adding that it was not commonplace for a tournament to have such a number of bouts that kept the fans on their feet.

Team Nompumelelo Manager Sipho Nogampula thanked Mbekisa for the develop-

ment tournament that helped his young pugilists Lusanda Smith, Thembela Magadla and Musa Hambaze to shine.

“These boys won gold medals in the tournament while the bouts of two of my other boys ended in draws. These development tournaments are helping us groom our boxers to stardom,” said Nogampula.

The tournament was also aimed at giving recognition to former boxing greats - boxers, trainers and managers who have been the leading lamp in the game during the dark days of apartheid, according to Mbekisa.

Some of these former boxers, trainers and ring officials, according to Mbekisa, were still involved in the sport, and that must be commended, he said, adding that they gave them medals - as a token of appreciation.

“We managed to award medals and certifi-

cates to former South African welterweight champion Linda Nondzaba together with Ngcambaza Mbaduli, Baas April, Mcinezeli Stootman, Lizo Jordan and managers Aaron Jacobs, Mthandazo Jantjies who were present.

He said Nondzaba took this reporter (Nceba Dladla’s) certificate and medal, a former professional boxers who is making a major contribution in boxing as a reporter and Boxing South Africa (BSA) Ring Official who could not attend owing to unforeseen circumstances.

Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation Deputy President Andile Gege said he was impressed by Bees Boxing Club’s initiative and promised to take the idea of recognising former boxing greats of the metro municipality.

Young prospect Anelisa Gungqisa carries Walmer’s hope of a future boxing champion NCEBA DLADLA ANELISA “Sugar Ray” Gungqisa could be the next big thing that Walmer/Gqeberha has produced following highly rated ex-SA bantamweight contenderTsitsi Sokutu.

This is the view of Caiphus Ntante, the trainer and manager of the 20 year-old Lightweight boxing prospect Gungqisa who dispatched the Sixth-rated South African Lightweight contender Zola Tunywa of Peddie on a Technical Knock Out (TKO) in the 5th Round in a boxing match held at Walmer High School Hall in Gqeberha last Sunday.

The duo were the main bout of the development boxing tournament brought courtesy of promoter Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions.

Gungqisa took the fight to his nemesis from the first minute of the first round throwing a barrage of punches to stamp his authority.

He took the first two rounds clearly on points but Tunywa showed he was not a punchingbag as he fought well to grab the third round from the judges’ score-cards.

Gungqisa brought Tunywa down with a big shot to the solar plexus in the fourth but he took the eight count and fought back. Gungqi-

sa’s ferocious punching power to the torso took the wind out of Tunywa and it was a matter of time before he went down and referee Ace Makaluza signalled the end of the fight in 1min 45 seconds of the 5th round.

The main supporting flyweight bout over six rounds between Thembelani Nxoshe of East London and Uitenhage’s Lwandile Phillip was a bore that Nxoshe won on points.

The best bout of the tournament was between the experienced Siyabulela Khuphiso and youthful and promising Siphosethu Ncisana over six rounds in the mini-flyweight division.

Both boxers showed their class and ring craft keeping the fans on their feet for the duration of the fight which Ncisana was perhaps unlucky to lose on points. A draw could perhaps have been a better decision.

The fight between heavyweights Renier Strydom and Lesley Hope was fast and furious. It ended in 1min 50 seconds of the first round after a duel of hundreds of punches from both boxers who wanted to end it soon.

Referee Ace Makaluza signalled the fight over after Strydom’s unanswered barrage of blows; but an irked Hope was not impressed.

He indicated that he was still in the fight.

In the other bouts, all over 4-rounds; Bulel-

ani Rooibaard beat Jongikhaya Bomvana on points (lightweight); Anele Bebe beat Thembelani Budaza on points (Junior featherweight); Bongani Jim beat Vuyisile Gxelesha on points (Jnr featherweight); Lonwabo Roboshi stopped Mzwamadoda Jibiliza tko 4; and in the only female bout debutante Nozipho Bell stopped Nomampondomise Xotyeni.on the first round tko.
