PPC hands over houses Kwazakhele police on to two employees R60 000 dagga bust LIZEKA TANDWA PPC Ltd handed over two houses to two of their local employees as part of their housing initiative which will be running for 3 years with 186 of their employees already approved for housing support. Isaac Baart and Palisa Zweni said they were elated when they received their houses after what they said was a long struggle. PPC employee for over 21 years, Baart, who now owns a home in KwaMagxaki, said he had been declined before while applying for a loan to buy a house at a bank but through the efforts made by PPC Ltd he was now able to own a four-bedroom home. “I can’t express how happy I am that this has happened today. It’s an unbelievable moment for me and my family. I want to thank my management. When I lost the first house after applying, it was a painful experience for me. This programme is amazing and I hope that it will work for others,” said Baart. Housing Progamme Executive at PPC Ltd, Yogesh Harsing, said the programme is designed for employees who do not qualify for mortgage loans but also do not qualify for government housing. “We saw a need was there in this a gap market and when we spoke to some of our
employees many of them fell into that margin. “We provide financial and technical support to our employees to help them resuscitate their financial debts and match R50 000 to match their deposit then we also provide them with technical support, where we help them with housing loans forms, ensure that the house is in a livable state and give legal support.” Palisa Zweni, who has worked for the company for 4 years as a Mobile Equipment Operator, said PPC Ltd helped her apply for her loan at the bank and also equipped her with the know-how on the sale of her new home. Zweni is moving into her new home with her husband and two children. “A big thank you to PPC for providing my family and me with a home. It is such a great feeling. This is one thing less for me to worry about. I also love that I am so close to work now; no more wasting time on the road,” said Zweni. “Every man’s home is his castle. At PPC we strive to create the opportunity for each person to own a decent permanent structure with running water, electricity and sewerage. This empowers our employees through a sense of self-worth and dignity to achieve their dreams,” said Karlwin Heese, General Manager PPC PE.

NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Port Elizabeth are looking for two suspects following a dagga bust in the Kwazakhele police precinct last week. Responding to a tip-off from members of the community on Tuesday at about 8.30pm, police saw a suspicious vehicle, a white Mitsubishi Colt bakkie and followed it, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu. “On seeing the police, the vehicle drove away and a chase ensued,” said W/O Gwavu, adding that police managed to block the road at Dalindyebo Street, Govan Mbeki Township. According to Gwavu, the two suspects jumped out and fled, leaving the vehicle behind. “Police recovered eight bags of dagga weighing 850 kg with a street-value of R60 000 in the bakkie,” said Gwavu. Gwavu warned, “No matter how drug
dealers tried to run away from the arm of the law, our members would relentlessly follow them and ensure that they face the full consequences of their actions.” He said fingerprints, photos and all the necessary investigations were done in order to help trace the suspects. According to Gwavu, the vehicle was not reported. This he added, resulted in them taking it in for safekeeping. Police were investigating a case of possession of and dealing in dagga. At time of going to print the suspects were still at large while police were still busy with investigation. According to Cluster Commander, Major General Funeka Siganga, despite the fact that the drug-dealers has not being arrested yet, the incident proved that the war against drug could be won. This comes especially when the SAPS continued to receive such good co-operation from the public, informing them about crime, criminals and their activities, combined with the quick response from the members of the SAPS.

THE child Ntembiso Ntsepho (3) who was reported in last week’s PE Express Indaba as missing, has been found. a result of the loss. She was admitted to the Livingstone Hospital. Nontlahla was then discharged but still not able to see her child. “Police contacted us to say they have found the child,” said Sakhile, adding that they could not see her because police took her to a place of safety in Walmer. “We sent the child to social workers for ob-
servation and they decided to keep her in the place of safety until they had satisfied themselves about her safety and that she was indeed in the right frame of mind and condition to go back to her family,” said Gwe. “I am still not right, but I miss my child,” said Nontlahla who, we were told, becomes confused from time to time since the ordeal.

Hard working mothers hailed as role-models NCEBA DLADLA IN celebration of August being Women’s Month, three Nelson Mandela Bay professionals and role-models say they have their own mothers to thank for what they have achieved in life. “We cannot end Women’s Month without highlighting the roles played by our mothers,” said Port Elizabeth Social Workers Tabisa Nkonki, Phindiswa Hallam and Nolusindiso Williams. The three women, who work for the Social Development and Special Programmes Department in the Port Elizabeth office in Struandale, said their mothers loved, nurtured, educated and ensured that they succeeded in life. “My mother Neliswa Maliwa is my rolemodel. She is a single mother who broughtup her three children in a very wonderful
way,” said Nkonki who at 32 years of age was her hard-working mother’s first born child. Nkonki would in return, like to be a good mother to her son Lutho (5). Hallam (33) was brought up in a family with many children. She stayed with her parents, siblings and cousins. “We were a big family. But my mother Nolima Xobongo would sacrifice a lot to make sure that we got the best in life. She’s my role-model,” said the married mother of two boys, Lilita (14) and Mangaliso (3), Hallam. Hallam said she was close to her mother. She, however, acknowledged the role played by her father in bringing them (the children) up. “My mother Nomalungelo Williams, populary known as Neni, is my role-model. She was a single parent and bread-winner who taught me the most important lessons in life. She taught me respect, independence and the efficacy of prayer,” said Nolusindiso (35), adding that Neni also looked after her own sister’s children. “She loved us all equally and taught us to know what to do with money. But, most of all, she taught us to share,” said Nolusindiso proudly.
Nominate now for Senior Citizen of the Year LASHEIGH LUCAS TIME is running out to nominate senior citizens who make a difference in their community, for the prestige BLG Logistics Senior Citizen of the Year Awards. Nominations close on August 27. Entry forms are available for download online at www.pe-express.co.za. The Award is run predominan tly by the Golden Oldies Fund raising club and is a prestigious event; one which recognises the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens, making a positive contribution to the community. It is a programme rewarding senior citizens through a nomination programme, which is assessed by a local selection committee and judging panel. The award aims to promote the concept of active ageing which is all about creating and maintaining a great quality life for individuals and groups as they age. “For someone who excelled in a sport in their heyday, becoming a mentor or coach to the younger generation can be very reward-
ing. Today so many youngsters lead sedentary, unhealthy lifestyles. Seeing an active senior citizen leading the way could inspire children and their parents to get active themselves,” said accountant at BLG Logistics South Africa Juanita Krauspe. Nominees must be 70 years or older and still be active in their respective communities and activities. “These are senior citizens who make a difference in the lives of others and who go above and beyond in all spheres in their communities,” said Krauspe. Persons who are turning 100 years or older will also be honoured. “This is a milestone that the organizers feel deserves recognition,” said Krauspe. The three main objectives of Senior Citizen of the year are . To honour older persons for the active role they still play in their communities, . to educate younger people to make provision for and to be active after their retirement, . and to bridge the gap between the youth and senior citizens. For more information contact Jacqui Wilson 083 652 2844.

The group also started a tin collection campaign called ‘1Child=R1’ and various schools participated in helping the group raise funds for the centre. “We really aim to help the children as much as we can. We have introduced homework sessions where we sit down and help the children with their homework,” said Deyzel. Among other items on the agenda, the Western District made up of 12 circuits which include Kwazakhele, Cape Town, Thembeni (in King William’s Town), East London and Queenstown among others, elect a district Chief Pastor who is otherwise known as the District Superintendent. It is believed that the Combined Methodist Church of Southern Africa is on course in unifying itself between the Methodists Church of Southern Africa (iWisile), the Methodist Church of Africa (KwaDonki), United Methodist Church, the Wesleyan Methodists and the African Methodists Episcopal (AME). “We are working at unifying the Methodists of Southern Africa. According to Tengo, this district conference is a preparation for the national conference which will be held in EC Province in January 2015. “We’ll also be talking about the preparations for the Memorandum of Understanding we’ll be signing with the United Kingdom (UK) based Evangelical Methodist Church. The conference, according to Tengo, will also discuss ways in which the church should be involved in a campaign for community upliftment and poverty alleviation. “We’ll be talking about our churches using their land for community food garden-
ing as well as opening up of Early Childhood Development Centres (ECDs) among other poverty alleviation programmes, “ said Rev. Dr Tengo.

Foreign students visit Bay for George Pemba’s works NCEBA DLADLA A MASTERS Thesis by University of Cape Town (UCT) Architecture student Nqaba Mangcu on the works of George Milwa Pemba, one of the great men Nelson Mandela Bay had to offer to the world , attracted university students from South Africa, Germany and Brazil. Nqaba’s Thesis entitled, “The Design of an Art Museum for the Permanent Exhibition of George Pemba’s Work” in 2012 was inspired by his internationally renowned grandfather whose legacy, he thought, should not be forgotten. A qualified architect, Nqaba is currently working in Cape Town for Louis Karol Archi-
tecture and Interiors. About 32 University of Cape Town (UCT) architectural students from second year to postgraduate studies including some School of Architecture lecturers from Sao Paulo in Brazil and Germany visited the city recently to walk in the footsteps of Pemba. The group were part of the project known as Flying Classroom, which encourages international students to work, travel and live together. New Brighton-born Dr Pemba, who died in 2001 aged 89, was celebrated in many countries of the world. Accordng to the Dean of the Faculty of Architecture at HTWG University and Applied Sciences, Professor Myriam Gautschi “We came to meet Pemba’s family in order to
know more about him, where he lived, worked and displayed his works as well as to understand his life’s struggles.” Pemba’s surviving children and married daughters Molly Mangcu, 72 (who is Nqaba’s mother) and twins Welele Stuurman and Welekazi Mosia (59) spoke fondly about their loving, caring and introverted father, a former teacher and shopkeeper. The trio took the visitors on a trip down memory lane on their father’s thoughts, feelings and emotions as depicted in his paintings and drawings which became prominent since the 1940s. The students visited the Art Gallery, Nelson Mandela Bay Museum, the Red Location Museum and the George Pemba Art Foundation.

Botile fights Bushby in East London in a must-win fight NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape Super-Middleweight champion Masixole Botile will face an acid test against East London’s Giovanni Bushby at the Orient Theatre in East London on Saturday August 30.

Their eight-round middleweight bout courtesy of the Zulu Boxing Consortium in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture will be headlined by an interesting IBO International Lightweight title fight between Xolisani Ndongeni (EL) and Gauteng’s Patrick Malinga among other major fights. However, it’s the encounter between Botile and Bushby, sanctioned by Boxing South Africa (BSA) as an elimination bout for the SA Middleweight title held by KwaZulu-Natal’s Christopher Buthelezi that is of major interest to Nelson Mandela Bay boxing lovers. In his last fight, Botile with 11 fights, 4 wins, all by Knock Out, and seven defeats, lost on points to SA Super-middleweight
champion Balima Weliya in a fight for the title. According to his mentor, Caiphus Ntante of Caiph Camp, at 33 years of age Botile relishes the opportunity to face Buthelezi and would not let Bushby, known to fight-fans as “Siyasebenza” to stand in his way. “Years have gone-by for Botile. At 33, the clock is unwinding, I think he won’t let Bushby stand in his way towards fighting for and ultimately winning the national title. I am 100% certain, we’ll win the fight convincingly,” said Ntante, who was not concerned by Bushby’s record of 11 fights, 5 wins (4KOs), three losses and three stalemates. Bushby fought and lost on points against Buthelezi in March this year before he pummelled Makhosandile Zwengu into submission in the opening round in June. Ntante was also not perturbed by the fact that he’ll be facing former world IBF Juniorfeatherweight kingpin Vuyani “The Beast” Bungu in Bushby’s corner. He said, “I am not worried at all that I’ll be facing Bungu in the ring. It is Bushby that Botile will ne facing and not the Beast.”
Football changes lives of the less fortunate learners SELBY MADIKANE IT was all smiles at Motherwell NU 10 Community school, Ncedo Senior Secondary School when 21 computers and a school bus were handed over by the Motsepe Foundation on Thursday. Among those in attendance were Motsepe Foundation Themba Tshabalala, Miss Sundowns Sindiswa Madinane, Sanlam Financial Advisor Nocwaka Boyce, Ncedo Senior Secondary School Governing Body and other high-profile people Apparently, Ncedo won the losers’ finals during Sanlam Kay Motsepe Cup games which were played in Limpopo Province in 2011. According to Principal Edward Ngqangashe, football changes lives of the less fortunate learners. Ngqangashe, who was visibly excited, said, “A majority of our learners hail from indigent backgrounds but when they play
football, it is a totally different story. Our learners show lots of enthusiasm in sport, particularly in football. “Our boys know exactly that sport forms a key element in their lives. Now our school is the only school to have a school bus and 21 computers, thanks to Sanlam Kay Motsepe. A big difference has been made and we are very proud to say that our football coaches and football players have made history in our school. Today our pupils will be computer-literate and the entire school has a form of transport that belongs to them. There will no stress when we play away from home. Above all we have benefited a lot from the Motsepe Foundation.” The function ended in grand style when the school-bus and the computer laboratory were handed to the ecstatic pupils. Principal Ngqangashe, who was elated, thanked the sponsors for making history in Ncedo Secondary School.
Walmer and Lingelihle High Schools to play in national championships SELBY MADIKANE DESPITE their 3-0 loss to Lingelihle High School in Sanlam Kay Motsepe Schools U/19 Provincial Football Finals, Walmer High will represent the Eastern Cape Province as the runners-up of the tournament played at Jabavu Stadium on Saturday. All the nine provinces will be represented by their schools’ winners and their runnersup in the national championships at Limpopo during September School holidays with the winning school getting R1 million and the winning schools will not get cash but they will identify projects in which the

learners will benefit. Seven schools from the seven Eastern Cape regions clashed with each other in the tournament which started in a round robin. The schools were divided into two groups with the Queenstown School Lingelihle High emerging as group leaders of four schools while Walmer High were the group leaders of the three schools. The visiting school managed to defend throughout the entire first half with their skipper Thanduxolo Dayimani marshalling their last line of defence. Both schools went to the break in a deadlock. In the last stages of the second half Walmer High goalkeeper Lukhanyo Gqamana cost his school as he conceded the needless goal scored by Lingelihle wing Vuyisa Bobani. Lingelihle High increased their lead to 2-0 following a goal scored by Lwando Kolisa. Walmer High came close to scoring but their striker Sanele Dlomo failed to score a clearcut goal. Kolisa scored his last goal which shattered the hopes of Walmer of winning the R100 000 provincial prize and trophy. Lingelihle principal-coach Sandile Mata highlighted that discipline, fitness level and character played a key role for his school’s success. Mata also divulged that his school was taking sport very seriously. Mata, who was thrilled, said, “Our school team came to the tournament well prepared and I want to thank the Motsepe Foundation and Sanlam for developing the school’s football.” Lingelihle High won the prize of R100 000 plus gold medals while Walmer received silver medals. All seven were given a full set of kit each.

FC Motherwell stage a big surprise SELBY MADIKANE THE solitary goal from Siyabonga Ndedwa gave FC Motherwell a big 1-0 surprise at Manchester during their MOFA First Division Preseason Knockout Tournament at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. The entire first chapter of the game Manchester dominated the youthful green side, with their strikers failing to bring life to their side. Motherwell’s goalkeeper Mbonisi Mbele was the main catalyst under the goals. At one time in the second chapter Mbele denied the Wells Estates side a scoring opportunity when he saved the penalty. Wells United went down to a 5-3 slump on penalties after they drew 1-1 with Scorpions in the fulltime.
FC Motherwell squad with their coaches.
NU 29 United Stars went down 3-0 to Scorpions.Unfortunately for Manchester, the worst memory came when Ndedwa registered the only goal of the game in the late stages of the game. In the MOFA Premier League Preseason KO game the knockout specialists Valencia beat Crystal Palace 5-3 on penalties after a 1-1 fulltime tie. Having beaten Ikamva Movers 4-3 on penalties after a goalless fulltime score, Young Romans registered a well deserved 4-1 score over Tomorrow Stars in their Premier League KO section. Other MOFA Premier League Preseason KO results: *Valencia 2-0 Lion Stars *Crystal Palace 4(3)-3(3) Young Madrid *Real Strikers 5(2)-3(2) Liverpool *Shining Stars 0-1 Milan Stars

Chippa Utd to host AmaTuks at NMB stadium tonight NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay elite Professional Soccer League (PSL) outfit Chippa United will play their third league match against University of Pretoria at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium today. Kick off is at 7pm. The Chilli boys would be hoping to offer the visiting AmaTuks, as the University of Pretoria is popularly known, a football lesson.
They beat Platinum stars at home in their opening match and succumbed to a 1-0 defeat to Supersport United away in their second outing. United are sitting at three points from a possible six. But, as former Kaizer Chiefs and Bafana Bafana marksman Patrick Mayo suggested after their 2-0 win against Dikwena (Platinum Stars), Chippa United would like to make their Port Elizabeth home ground “the slaughter house” against visiting teams.
Coach Kosta Papic whose work permit has reportedly been delayed, is believed to be finally sorted out whislt players from foreign countries who could not be fielded owing to some paper-work finalisation, are also believed to be ready for the kickoff tonight. This means there would be no hiding place for AmaTuks who have a point to show in their league campaign following their drawn game against Bidvest Wits, and a defeat away to Polokwane City in their opening match of the season.
To keep their fans happy and coming out in numbers to support, Chippa United should continue playing together as a unit. Their attack-minded football has proved to be a winning formula and a form of defence. Otherwise, they will be relying on the scoring prowess of captain Andile Mbenyane, David Zulu and Siyabulela Shai. Mbenyane and Zulu scored a goal apiece in the win against Platinum Stars while Shai, on the other hand, has still to register his name on the score-sheet.

Brothers U/13 beat the following teams: Royal Blues 5-0, Powerlads 4-0, Peace Lovers 4-2 and Young Neighbours 2-0. CITY Lads fans were taken aback when their side lost 1-0 to their archrivals Manchester Babes during their Sasol Ladies League on Saturday. Both sides played their hearts out but an odd goal separated the unrivalled City Lads
in front of their home supporters. Thunderbirds did not show any remorse when they hosted Veeplaas lasses Liverpool whom they walloped 5-1. Another Nelson Mandela Bay side Continental Express was devastated 13-0 by Birmingham City in East London. Mustangs did not play their game against University of Fort Hare as it was postponed until further notice.
Callies back in their winning ways SELBY MADIKANE BLOOM Callies did exactly what they were good at following their 2-1 win over Fairdene at Finnis 1 Fields on Saturday. Callies retained their top spot at Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) Premier League after losing 1-0 to Ebenezer a week ago. Following a 2-1 loss to Westlake, Glenville Celtic redeemed themselves in 2-1 triumph over Booysens Pride at Errol Heynes. Still fresh from their dramatic win over Glenville Celtic, Westlake salvaged a 2-1
over Helenvale at Windvogel Grounds. Coming to the game with spirits high after beating Ebenezer, Stardrift maintained their winning streak in their game against Fairview Rovers which they overcame 2-1 at Finnis 2 Fields. In the breathing taking game, Park United handed a 2-1 defeat to Blackpool at Arcadia. Ebenezer walked home tall after registering a 3-0 win when they were up against Shamrocks at Gelvan 1 Grounds. Hotspurs accumulated a point when they drew 1-1 with Wolves at Dyke Fields.
Army boys and Municipality share the spoils SELBY MADIKANE PE DEFENCE looked a much improved side when they gave their utmost following their 1-1 draw with Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at EC Defence Grounds last Friday. Both sides played exciting attacking
