Metro’s power struggle intensifies REPORTER
sands of rand.
HE Municipality has its hands full with electricity problems all over the metro, from Eskom warning of possible load shedding this winter to protests over their disconnection of illegal connections and the vandalism of their substations costing them hundreds and thou-
According to a statement by municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron, in the past week alone at least 14 substations were vandalised with an estimated repair cost of at least R50 000 per sub-station. In the latest incident connected to vandalism and illegal connections, the charred body of a
T
man believed to be a cable thief was found on Monday morning in the Miltonia electricity sub-station in Malabar. Municipal spokesperson, Kupido Baron said when the Fire and Emergency officials responded to a report of a fire at the sub-station in Burness Street, they noticed forced entry to the facility and suspected that someone could still be inside.

“This was confirmed when tools, to gain entry to the facility and force the cover of one of the transformers open, were found inside. The man was discovered by two officials from the Electricity and Energy Directorate,” he said. Baron said they believed that the unidentified man gained entry to the sub-station, forced a transformer open and used a saw to cut through the live 11 000 volt cables. An average house uses 230 volts. The South African Police Services opened an inquest docket and owing to the vandalism repairs are required to the sub-station. The power supply to some streets surrounding the sub-station was expected to be interrupted until today. Another headache for the municipality is the problem of illegal electrical connections in the townships. Protest broke out in Walmer last week after the municipality started disconnecting illegal connections. According to municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, they intend disconnecting more of these illegal electricity connections in the coming weeks with Kleinskool and Joe Slovo townships next on the list. “We cannot condone the use of illegal cables. The municipality provides electricity for all and we even install connections in shacks around the Bay. There is no excuse for illegal cables,” he said. Portfolio Chair for Electricity and Energy, Councillor Andile Mfunda, said this financial year alone illegal cables had cost the municipality over R90 million. Mfunda said they condemned the use of illegal cables but considering the unrest in communities they needed to have creative ways of dealing with issues of this nature. Baron warned cable thieves that “all electricity installations are extremely dangerous and should be considered as live and must not be tampered with.”
2 Redeployed teachers return to Coselelani News
May 21, 2014 Indaba
NCEBA DLADLA COSELELANI High School has received back the teachers that were initially sent out into the redeployment pool. The NU9 Motherwell school has started teaching in earnest again after the SGB and the Department of Education in the Port Elizabeth District found common ground in their meeting last Friday, the last in a series of meetings according to a delighted Coselelani High School principal Nomakorinte Mfanta. She thanked the Department of Education
for heeding their call and improving the school’s staff establishment. She also thanked parents for taking care of their children’s education. “We have received back all three the teachers that we had lost. The teachers are teaching and learners are learning. We thank the department for the understanding,” said an overjoyed SGB Chairperson Zamile Futha. This, however, did not come easy. It was after almost a month of Grade 12 classes being without IsiXhosa, LO and Accounting teachers as three teachers had received letters telling them to seek employment elsewhere ow-

ing to the redeployment process. Three teachers left last year. But it was due to the redeployment of this year’s three teachers that the stakeholders of the school decided enough was enough! On Thursday parents closed the gates to lock out those few teachers that were at school. They said they would open for them only when they received the teachers they wanted. Matrics added their voice. They said without teachers they would suffer the consequences. “We come to school and do nothing during those periods. How are we expected to
pass matric?” asked Kwanele Ntshebe (21). According to Kwanele Matiwane (21) another learner, they had targeted a 100% pass in matric this year, but they were concerned that those dreams would remain just dreams. “Think about it. Accounting is not one of those subjects that we could do on our own without the assistance of the teacher. That’s the same with Maths Literacy. Unless something happens, we are doomed to fail,” said Keneue Letiyane (18) last Thursday. Attempts to solicit comment from the Department of Education spokesperson Mali Mtima were unsuccessful.

IDAMASA to continue to pray for the ANC NCEBA DLADLA THE Interdenominational African Ministers Association of Southern Africa (IDAMASA) in the Eastern Cape Province, which is based in the Nelson Mandela Bay Region, has congratulated the ANC under the leadership of president Jacob Zuma for winning the fifth National General Elections. Speaking from their office in Gratten Street, New Brighton, IDAMASA speaker Reverend Dr Xolani Tengo said the association of religious leaders who fought against Apartheid, Bantu Education, Black Local Authorities and led protest marches for the release of Nelson Mandela and other political prisoners as well as the unbanning of ANC and other political organisations
throughout the years, had confidence in the ANC, despite the challenges that were still faced. He said, “IDAMASA was prophetic about liberation, freedom and democratic South Africa. We have suffered a great deal, not least because we deeply longed for genuine change within society and State.” “Our prophetic insight during the past twenty years of a free and democratic South Africa is a good story to tell although we are still facing serious challenges as society and State.” Tengo said IDAMASA, a religious revolutionary interfaith movement for social change, would continue to pray for the ANC and its leadership to service the people equally and without regard to race, colour, sex, creed and political affiliation or associ-
ation. ANC Regional Secretary Zandizile Qupe said the ANC appreciated IDAMASA’s congratulatory words and were not surprised because the ANC was formed by priests, chiefs, the learned and ordinary citizens who wanted change in the country. He said the ANC would continue to rely on the leadership and prayers of the men of the cloth especially from IDAMASA. “Throughout the years of the struggle for liberation the church has always been the platform for the clergy to wage the struggle for a democratic order, peace and social justice,” said Qupe. He mentioned such names as the late Rev Devilliers Soga, Mcebisi Xundu, and Rev Dr Allan Boesak of the UDM. IDAMASA is planning a Mass General Thanksgiving Service, according to Tengo.
IDAMASA executive members, seated from left, are Rev Dr James Fatuse, Bishop Sandile Jika and Presiding Bishop Noqwaka. Standing from left are Rev Dr Xolani Tengo, Rev Canon JR Magongo and Rev HS Ncula congratulated the ANC on its election victory. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
Isaac Booi Primary School needs Grade 1 teachers for good foundation NCEBA DLADLA A PRIMARY school without good Grade 1 teaching is like building a house without a foundation. This was said by Isaac Booi Senior Primary School teacher Ludwe Memese. . A Head of Department (HOD) in the school, Memese was referring to a crisis his school faced without Grade 1 teachers. He showed PE Express Indaba on Thursday last week, a class of about 46 pupils who were without a teacher.
Parents have a meeting at Isaac Booi Primary School in Zwide as seen behind the Grade 1 and 2 pupils are happy to have a photo take. PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA
“These children have been without a teacher since the beginning of this year. We asked the Department of Education for a teacher but that has not happened,” said Memese last Thursday. According to Memese, the numbers of their
pupil intake continued to increase every year as many parents in the vicinity of Zwide township liked their school’s teaching ethos. According to SGB chairperson Nkosana Mati, in the previous years, the SGB raised funds and appointed teachers whenever an opportunity arose. Now he said, “We are without funds, and that is the reason why we pleaded with the Department to get us a teacher for our children.” There was another problem. Children without supervision usually fight. As Memese was taking this reporter to the class. There was a fight in the class. Memese feared that young children going out of the class without the knowledge of a teacher were prone to more dangers. Members of the SGB were hoping to meet the Department once more, to present their case.

Premier’s office denies allegations of ‘not caring’ for heroes’ children NCEBA DLADLA SOUTH Africa is twenty years into freedom and democracy. The children of Siphiwo Mthimkhulu, a student activist and member of the Cosas 2 who fought and died for this freedom in the turbulent 1980s, are complaining of being left in the lurch by the ruling party in government. Born of different mothers, Aluta (33) and Sikhumbuzo (31) of Zwide and KwaMagxaki respectively, claim that the African National Congress seems to have forgotten about the promises made to them during the reburial in September 2009 of the bodies of the PEBCO Three (Sipho Hashe, Champion Galela and Qaqawuli Godolozi) and COSAS Two (Siphiwo Mthimkhulu and Topsy Madaka). “President (Jacob) Zuma and Premier Noxolo Kiviet were there. They said they were to offer assistance so that we could live better lives. As we speak right now, we are unemployed and nobody seems to care for us anymore,” said Aluta. Aluta said she feared that her grandmother Joyce Mthimkhulu who recently passed on “also died poor like my father and grandfather”, and that the powers-that-be would totally forget about them. During the decent burial of the heroes of the struggle organised by the State. President Zuma remarked, “In memory of the COSAS 2, let us build a prosperous future for our youth, through investing more than ever before in education and skills development, and in providing opportunities for our young people to
develop their true potential.” Aluta said they were impressed. And indeed, after the burial, the president called all the children of the victims of abduction, torture and murder by the apartheid apparatus in 1982 and asked them to make their requests known. “We asked for employment and a RDP house each,” said Aluta, the mother of three, adding that the president asked that it be done with immediate effect. “People now laugh at us. They say we are the children of the hero of the struggle, yet we’ve got nothing to show for it,” said Sikhumbuzo who thanked their mothers, both teachers, for carrying them through all these years. But Aluta was quick to add, “We do not want hand-outs. We want to get employment and work like everybody else, because even the small business venture we were promised and asked to select a piece of land, doesn’t seem to be coming.” Sipho Hashe’s daughter Mandisa HasheDukumbana said as Hashe’s children they were not expecting any favours “hence we decided to apply for jobs and work.” “I feel for Aluta and Sikhumbuzo but wish they had started something that would have helped them in life, like going to school and getting an education,” said Mandisa. Chief-of-Staff in the Premier’s office, Sipho Lunyawo was shocked to hear of the duo’s complaint. He said, “First and foremost I want to stress that the Premier hast a big and warm heart. She cares so much about all the children of
our martyrs and heroes of the struggle. Lunyawo said the person who was in charge of the developments of the children of the Pebco Three and Cosas Two had since died but the programme was not abandoned. He mentioned that the Premier was, however, “not in a position to take even the children of the late president Nelson Mandela and put them in office as Directors and CEOs of Companies.”
3
They have to apply for jobs and be appointed on merit like everyone else,” said Lunyawo. He said the Office of the Premier discovered that the duo were under-educated and without skills. “We offered them skills upgrading courses and told them to start cooperatives. Have they done that? No!”

R300 000 dagga bust in Uitenhage applauded by police Chief
Sergeant Melisa Potgieter (left) and WO Jacques Adlem with the confiscated dagga and vehicle. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
UITENHAGE police arrested a 40-year-old man on the R75 outside Uitenhage on Friday for dealing in dagga. Members from the Uitenhage K9 Unit, who were conducting routine roadblocks on the R75 since the morning, noticed a suspicious blue Ford Bantam bakkie and requested the driver to pull off the road, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart. As they came closer, the police members became more suspicious of the bakkies’ cargo and took a closer look. “Upon investigation, it became clear that the bakkie was stacked with bags containing dagga which weighed 151kg and with an estimated street value of more than R300 000,” said W/O Swart. The driver of the vehicle, a 40-year-old man from Hankey, was arrested on the spot
Police changed gear in curbing growing, selling of dagga A MAN (22) from North Street in Uitenhage was arrested last Wednesday by members of the Operational Sector Group (SAPS Uitenhage) for dealing in, and the cultivation of, dagga plants, thanks to valuable information from members of the community. SAPS members followed up on information and confiscated 47 containers with plants, dried dagga, cash as well as the equipment to cultivate the plants - all to the estimated value of R10 000, according to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart. Swart said the SAPS in the Eastern Cape have noticed a sudden rise in the growing and selling of dagga. “There are a number of incidents where police arrested peo-

ple for growing (cultivating), selling and using dagga in this province, especially in some of the major urban centres, “ said Swart. These arrests, she explained, were due to the fact that police have in the recent past heightened their attempts to curb these activities. She mentioned search operations that the police were engaged in among other activities, adding that they helped police seize drugs and arrest dealers. “The conducting of random road blocks is also helping in stopping the trafficking of drugs from one end of the province to the other, and ultimately the prosecution of all those involved,” said Swart. According to Swart, in the past three weeks,, police in Butterworth, East London, Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage have arrested dagga growers as well as dealers in different operations. The estimated street value of these confiscated drugs amounts to about R5 million in street value, she said. Provincial Police Commissioner Lieutenant General Binta said that the SAPS would continue with these kinds of operations which intensifies SAPS efforts to rid the province of the scourge of drugs. “Dagga is in most cases used as an introductory drug which then leads to experimenting with other heavier drugs. This in turn leads to uncontrolled drug abuse which often results in social breakdown and ven death of innocent people,” said Lt Gen Binta. – NCEBA DLADLA
and detained for illegally dealing in dagga. The suspect is due to appear in the Uitenhage Magistrate Court soon. Uitenhage Cluster Commander Brigadier Phillip Salukazana commended the members for the bust. “People who are selling drugs- including dagga – especially to our children, are harming our society. “Hence all SAPS members are urged to keep up the good work and continue to crack down on these unlawful substances,” said Salukazana of this the second success in one week for the Uitenhage Cluster. He applauded the police members for the busts and members of the community for their input in closing the avenues for drug dealers and syndicates.

AFTER 10 YEARS OF DIVORCE HE RECENTLY CAME BACK My family and I had everything & life was good but due to jealousy my husband’s family hated me. In fact he later divorced me too & left the kids with me to suffer. I visited priests, gurus & healers for help. Money was wasted without results. Luckily a caring old friend of mine took me to Sonia who had saved her daughter Mr and Mrs Khumalo (happily in love again) from drugs & alcohol abuse, I paid a R200 consultation fee, she accurately read my fortune & told me all my problems without me mentioning a word. She even used a mirror to show me real faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Sonia performed special prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful love crystals plus a special ring to fix my financial problems. Seven (7) days after prayers my ex-husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently got re-married! Like me, all clients I have been referring to her always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days.

School principal Wandile Kona said “Our school is dependent on the Education Department for funding. That money is unfortunately not enough as we have more financial needs. We have to pay for the phone bills, faxes, computers, security and to buy sports kit and transport our athletes during away games and sport events,”. The school’s pupils participates and is successful in athletics, netball, football and rugby. A jovial Kona said the day was also aimed at showcasing their arts and culture talents as some of the pupils had won in a regional poetry and drama competition. The bright and beautiful day’s spectacular event was creatively combined with the Arts and Culture Mini-Festival where the schools’ artists and regional competition winners performed poetry and drama to entertain the crowds. “Our children who repre-

NMB stands together to #BringBackOurGirls LIZEKA TANDWA OVER 5000 people are expected to attend the #BringBackOurGirls march on May 26 from the New Law Courts to the City Hall to hand over a letter of solidarity and appeal to the Nigerian government and international community to speed up all efforts to bring back the 234 girls who were abducted on April 14. Mvuzo Mbelekane who is organising the campaign said they want to demonstrate
their anger and solidarity by marching to Local Government Offices because there is no Nigerian Embassy in the city. “The campaign is not a political party thing and the Municipality is not involved. We want our government to intervene and help the Nigerian government to bring back our girls alive,” he said. This comes after approximately 234 female students were kidnapped from the Nigerian Government Secondary School in the town of Chibok in Borno State, Nigeria. The kidnappings were claimed by Boko Haram,
an Islamic Jihadist and Takfiri terrorist organization based in northeast Nigeria. This has resulted in an outpouring of outrage from the international community. Mbelekane said on 17 May their volunteers had distributed flyers, posters and asked people to sign the Letter of Solidarity in all Shopping Centres of Nelson Mandela Bay. “On May 24, we will be out to mobilise people by distributing flyers and asking them to sign the Letter of Solidarity in all Malls from 10am to 2pm,” he added. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipal Commu-
nications manager, Roland Williams, took to social media also to call on the support of the Bay saying, “Thank you all so much for the overwhelming support to the #BringBackOurGirls campaign. The signing of the letter of solidarity and the pledges to participate in the march has been nothing short of fantastic.” Mbelekane said the first 5 000 people to arrive will get #BringBackOurGirls T-shirts free and asked people to bring a placard on the day of the March. The march will start at 10am at the New Law Courts.

ACC Youth Fatties in Beauty Contest this Saturday
Azz Veritazz will perform with with Zipho Dladla this Saturday during the ACC Youth Concert. PHOTO:SUPPLIED WHO said plus-sized ladies and gentlemen have no place in modelling and show-business? This is the question the youth of St Thomas African Catholic Church (ACC) in KwaNobuhle, Uitenhage are asking as they are preparing for the Beauty Contest which will feature plus-size ladies and gents aptly referred to as OoFohloza (the fat ones) at Thanduxolo High School Hall this Saturday May 24. The show will also feature a Miss Sophiatown contest with music provided by the hot, hip and happening young Nelson Mandela Bay Hip Hop, House and Kwaito artists like Azz Veritazz, the Geniuses, Deception, Lujaman, Nandi, and Young Lee among others, delivering their latest renditions. “We have a beauty pageant for the young people in our church and this time around we decided the plus sized - people who don’t usually enter these competitions will have an opportunity to shine,” said
youth spokesperson Zandile Tebeka (28). Members of the Young Men’s Guild who were called Fatties were also enthusiastic about this event, said Tebeka. According to a bubbly Tebeka, their theme is: “Be bright and beautiful in your colourful swimwear.” She said they had invited other churches and were certainly going to entertain the young and old in their fundraising event. “I am plus-sized and proud. You can call me uFohloza. I’m not worried. On Saturday I’ll be proudly wearing my swimming costume and showing the beauty that God has given me,” said Tebeka adding that following the success of their show at the PE Opera House in March, Azz Veritazz and the musicians on call promised to make this a show not to forget. Bay TV’s Luvuyo Belu will be the MC. It starts at 2pm. Admission is R40 at the Door. – NCEBA DLADLA
KwaNobuhle gogos and mkhulus in Modelling Show THE Mothers’s Gift, a Non-Profitsharing-Organisation (NPO) from KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage will present a Modelling Show at the Love-life Centre on Friday May 30, starting at 5pm. Admission is R15 for adults and R7 for children, according to the Mother’s Gift Founder and Head Mama Sheila Isaacs who organises the show with the Lovelife Centre and Radio L2K. Residents are urged to come in numbers to support the show which will see the gogos and mkhulus strutting their stuff. It is aimed at raising funds for the struggling NPO. There is a huge outcry in the impoverished KwaNobuhle township as no sphere of government or big business is funding this NPO despite it making a big difference in the community by looking after hundreds of unemployed township people. Many of the people in KwaNobuhle are unskilled and ravaged by many ills including
abject poverty and sickness. “Some of the people we look after are suffering from diseases like TB, High Blood Pressure, Diabetes and HIV/Aids. We run a soup-kitchen to benefit many people including the young, some of which come here during their school breaks, ” said Mama Sheila. She said they have a dedicated team of home-based carers, counsellors and teachers who help children survive through the hot daily meals they offer, thanks to the food garden they run at Sisonke High School. “We can’t even afford to pay these people a stipend. But through this show we hope to make enough to see to some of our daily needs,” said Mama Sheila. The Mother’s Gift head thanked Lovelife Radio for supporting the initiative through the venue, sound system and hundreds of rands worth of advertising through air-time. – NCEBA

Madibaz judo star selected for SA team REPORTER MADIBAZ judo star Matthew Chase was included in the South African student team after claiming two gold medals at the USSA championships at NMMU’s Missionvale Campus in Port Elizabeth. Chase, who won gold in the U/60kg and U/66kg divisions, led his team to their first overall title in the annual competition contested by the country’s top six tertiary institutions. The Madibaz’ medal tally of 16, which also included four silvers and 10 bronzes, saw them finish ahead of Tuks and Maties after two days of intense competition.
Chase, who was named the most promising male athlete, said the event was one of the major ones on the calendar and featured the top judokas in the country. “I am very happy with my results,” said the 20-year-old, who had trained twice daily in the lead-up to the tournament. “To keep my sports bursary, I need to perform at my best.” The first-year electrical engineering student is no stranger to success after placing third at the African Junior Championships in 2013 and 2014. According to NMMU martial arts manager Bernard Petersen, the Madibaz’ success could be attributed to “a collective effort” and the hosts duly received the most spirited team award.

Cacadu United hammered the tailenders OR Tambo Cosmos 4-2 in Alexandria. Angavu Stars went down 1-0 to Umtata Bucks at Dampies Adams in Queenstown while Tornado FC edged out Tembu Royals 2-0. However, more battle took place in the centre of the park as both sides kept their lines of defence tight. Brothers’ striker Lubabalo Makubalo nearly scored the opening goal but Lovers’ goalkeeper Andile Jonas was equal to the task as he fisted the ball over the woodwork. Lovers’ strikers and Chulumanco Sijila looked threatening but Xolile Njokweni and Lebohang Qekisi kept a watchful eye on them. The first half
score was goalless. In the second half both sides were desperate for goals. In the 65 th minute Siyabulela Dayile scored the only goal of the game from a direct free kick when Brothers’ goal stopper Lunga Vakaza used his hand to save the ball out of his goal area. Brothers could only blame themselves for not levelling matters as Lubabalo Makubalo failed to score a penalty kick on the stroke of the final whistle Brothers’ veteran midfielder Mhlobo Moriri Makaza was the outstanding player during the game as he was instrumental to his side’s build-ups and moves. Having beaten Mighty Birds 3-1 in the semifinals, Lovers received R3500, a floating trophy and gold medals while Brothers went home with R1500 plus silver medals. The losing semifinalists settled for R1000 each.

Imbabala coach Vuyisile Jesus Makoki hailed his boys. Makoki said, “These boys reap the fruits of their hard labour. They worked very hard. The journey was very long but we managed to collect silverware. The previous games had a telling effect on my players. They were very obedient throughout the season and they fought like
soldiers. I am proud to say our top goal scorer Masixole Kana has scored 21 league goals.” The league runners-up KUBS’ only goal was scored by Nkululeko Torinori in their game against City Friends. United took the game to Stars who did not want to be kicked out of the Top 8. But the goal from United’s striker Bakho Deliwe was good enough to release Stars from the Top 8. Deliwe’s goal came from a nifty pass from Lumko Ngece. As things stand at the weekend, United are out of the relegation zone. Young Romans added more worries to relegationthreatened Lion Stars which they beat 1-0. Tomorrow Stars drubbed Valencia 4-0 who are title contenders.
