Dreamhouse in pieces NCEBA DLADLA

W

HEN Nomathemba Mfazwe-Kopo was granted ownership of an RDP House in Masango Street, KwaNobuhle in December 2001 she thanked God for looking after her and her family. “I thanked our government for service delivery. We were happy that we finally had a place we could call our home,” said Nomathemba (54). But as soon the family started to settle down in their new home, this unemployed mother of three complained that the house started falling down. “The house is full of cracks, all over. The roofs is leaking, window-panes are hanging, windows and doors are falling down. As for the toilet, it is in a total shambles. It is falling,” said Nomathemba, adding that when it rains their lives become a misery. Nomathemba, who claims to be suffering from diabetes, asthma and high blood pressure, said they felt let down by the same government. “I cannot tell you how many times we went to report this to our Ward Councillor Nomsa Booi. She just does not care. She promises to come and see the house but she does not. We are now wondering whether we are not deserving of assistance,” Nomathemba told PE Express Indaba. According to Nomathemba, they spend sleepless nights every day not knowing when the whole structure would fall down on them. She said, “We have children here including an 11-days old baby (her grandchild) and fear that we are not safe. Just imagine if the walls fell over us here.” There are also holes on the floor and Nomathemba said they were in constant fear of reptiles that could come in at any time and bite them. “I think this house is the result of poor workmanship. There is little cement and too much sand in the building. Hence these cracks,” said Nomathemba’s husband Charlie Kopo, a pensioner on whose meagre payout this family of five depends. Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki said thwey were going to investigate the case and see what they could do to assist the family. “We shall look into the matter and see what we can do. Housing rectification, was however, not the municipality’s but the provincial government’s, said Mniki.

Patient Mangaliso Bhele’s relatives sought NCEBA DLADLA DORA Nginza Hospital management is looking for the relatives of Mangaliso Bhele, a mentally ill patient who was admitted at this hospital on December 29, 2013.

Mangaliso Bhele must soon be discharged from Dora Nginza Hospital.

PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA

“The patient is mentally disturbed. He is not making any sense when asked about his home address,” said Dora Nginza hospital’s principal Social Worker Pamela Rubushe. Rubushe said Mangaliso gave the hospital authorities three addresses. Two of those were non-existent while nobody knows him in the third address that he gave. Mangaliso told the nurses at C11 Ward that he was born in “Wesley” meaning Wesley Estate in 1971 and that his mother was Ntombomzi. This is not possible as Wesley Estate is a relatively new residential area. “I visited all three addresses he mentioned, starting with 6895 Malakane Street in Wells Estate, 6672 Site and Service, KwaZakhele

and 6895 Mbilini Street, also in KwaZakhele,” Rubushe said, adding that the first two addresses did not exist while nobody knew him in the third address that he mentioned. According to his KwaZakhele hospital records, it is for the second time that the name of Mangaliso Bhele appears. Mangaliso was first admitted at Livingstone hospital in Korsten on Monday, November 18 2013 allegedly after suffering from a brutal assault. He was later transferred to Dora Nginza Hospital for a CT Scan on November 28. On his second appearance, according to Rubushe, the patient was brought by the police and admitted in the Casualty. There was, however, no information written in the admission form on the patient’s next-of-kin on both the occasions. Said Rubushe, “He is still getting treatment at the hospital but we would like someone, a family member, to come forward because he’s going to need assistance in taking medication when he is discharged from hospital.”

Get Flight 97 with KQFM’s DJ Zol NCEBA DLADLA INKQUBELA Community Radio’s Breakfast Show named “Flight 97” is fast becoming popular among Nelson Mandela Bay radio listeners. This is thanks to the innovation and inspiration of the programme’s anchor Zolile Mkhanzi otherwise known as DJ Zol to a myriad of listeners of this radio station based at the OR Tambo Centre in Zwide. Flight 97 is beamed every weekday from 6am to 9am. The station broadcasts around Nelson Mandela Bay and surrounds at 97.0 FM. An unassuming DJ Zol presents the programme with equally gifted and dedicated news readers Noloyiso Bonga and Ndimphiwe Dingiswayo. Sebenzile Tetyana, aka Sebs, looks after the sports news while locals are fed with the day’s weather report and traffic news, timeously.

“Flight 97 is a compact edutainment programme full of information to keep the listeners abreast of new developments,” according to DJ Zol. In planning the programme with his cohosts, they try by ay means possible to look at burning issues as they impact on local communities. Listeners phone-in and contribute immensely in the topics raised while they have an opportunity to talk about their own problems and solutions during the programme, according to Zol. “As a local community radio station. We look at issues that affect local communities,” he said. Explaining, he said they dissect the weekend’s political happenings with the help of an academic and resident political analyst Ongama Mtimka every Monday. On other days they talk about locals making a difference in their communities and also look at other developments people talk

about in their areas. “The schools have just re-opened and so the talk is about anything to do with education, results, applications, admissions, pro-

motions, bursaries, schools and universities. We try to be relevant at all costs,” said an enthusiastic DJ Zol who aspires to work for a national radio station one day.

The Mother’s Gift gets visited by National Office of Agriculture NCEBA DLADLA WAR against hunger and deprivation had been declared by the formation of the Mother’s Gift, an NGO in KwaNobuhle a few years ago.

The NGO that continues to feed hundreds of the young and old people in the poverty stricken township in Nelson Mandela Bay is expecting visitors from the National Department of Agriculture this Sunday January 23. Director and founder of the Mother’s Gift, Mama Sheila Isaacs, said since she took over the unused Sisonke Secondary School premises to plant food to feed the needy, there has been hope in the people of the area. “This was noted by the District’s Department of Land Affairs and Agrarian Reform which, working with the Department of Education and Public Works, enabled us to get a lease for this school to use for food security,”

said Mama Sheila. She said the department would make an announcement that will change the lives of the people in the community to the better. The Ward Councillor, Monde Vaaltyn, has also taken notice of the work of the Mother’s Gift. Speaking during the Christmas Party and HIV/Aids Awareness Campaign held in December where the Mother’s Gift, assisted by the departments of Social Development, Health and SASSA and other local businesses fed about 700 people, gave food parcels and groceries to the needy, Cllr Vaaltyn said Mama Sheila gave hope in a hopeless world. “As government, we support initiatives like these because they make a difference in the lives of the communities,” said Vaaltyn, adding that this was important because government cannot succeed in doing it alone. He urged other caring citizens and business to do the same.

Help Social Workers find Phumelela Nqwelo’s biological parents NCEBA DLADLA

Nqwelo.

THE Department of Social Development and Special Programmes in the Nelson Mandela Bay District is pleading with members of the community to assist in their attempt to locate the whereabouts of the biological parents of the child, Phumelela

Phumelela was allegedly abandoned as a baby in the streets of Zwide, Port Elizabeth in 1997. The mother of the child was believed to be Nomkhitha Nqwelo whose whereabouts are still not known. The late Bukelwa Prince found the baby

and looked after her. Bukelwa later died and her mother Sophie Mkoko of Motherwell took over and cared for the child. “Mrs Mkoko (Bukelwa’s mother) who also died early in 2013 had been struggling to get the birth certificates for the child Phumelela, currently in the care of Vuyelwa Mkoko, Sophie Mkoko’s other

daughter,” said Social Worker Vumeka Nokoyo. The department is now looking for anyone with information about the biological parents of the child, Phumelela Nqwelo to please contact Social Worker Nokoyo at 0 041 461 7914/5/6/7 during office hours, (8am to 4pm).

This is what they had to say: ) Phendla Primary School pupil in New Brighton, Ande Swartbooi (6) was quick to answer, “I’ d like to become a policeman.” ) Aphile Mgcwabe (6) also from Phendla Primary thought a little bit before smiling and saying, “I want to become a police(woman).” ) “I want to become a policeman,” said another six year old Songe Matebese of Ben Nyathi Primary School in KwaZakhele.

There are options available for matrics that failed NCEBA DLADLA THE Provincial Department of Education has told schools not to reject learners who failed matric in 2013 when they want to repeat the class. The matric class of 2013 was the last to sit for the National Curriculum Statements

(NCS) Examinations as the 2014 class will begin with CAPS. Those who failed last year, must still find a way to rewrite those important examinations, according to the department. Since the closing date for the application for writing supplementary examinations is on Friday 25 January, the Provincial Education Superintendent-General Mthunywa

Ngonzo has pleaded with school principals to take back learners who want to repeat Grade 12. He said they were the responsibility of government. “We have a responsibility to take them back. We cannot throw our learners into the streets,” Ngonzo is quoted as having said. Government Communications Informa-

tion Systems in the province also issued a statement in this regard urging especially those learners under the age of 21 years to enrol at their schools without delay. Failed Grade 12 learners over the age of 21 could register as part-time candidates or explore other options available to them like enrolling at the Adult Basic Education and Training Centres.

Councillor Marlow saves the day for KwaNoxolo karate club NCEBA DLADLA SPORT keeps the the youth out of danger, drugs and crime. And karate as a form of martial arts is renowned for instilling discipline. Founder of Shotokan Karate Club in KwaNoxolo, sensei Joseph Thomas who looks after 45 young men and women interested in the sport in the area, believes that if the majority of young people can be introduced to karate, there would be peace in the country. Third Dan Black Belt Joseph started the club in 2004. They have since produced champions, senseis and sempais. PE Express Indaba found Joseph and his club members, mostly school-going children training on the field outside of the George Botha Community Hall. It is because local Councillor Sarina Marlow who was paying for the club’s training at the institution for the past few years had not paid. “The (Ward 38) Councillor said she cannot afford to pay for us this year. Where are we going to get the money from?” asked Joseph, adding that karate was an indoor sport and that outside training was bad for their health. According to Joseph, the majority of his

young karatekas came from poor backgrounds. Their parents were mostly unemployed, he said. “We are the only karate club in KwaNoxolo. We cater for everybody but most of our members are young children and a few unemployed adults. Lack of financial resources has always been our biggest problem,” said sensei Siwakhile Nceka,” adding that he hoped the councillor would change her mind and continue to support them. “Yes, I told them I cannot continue to sponsor one sporting code with that kind of amount every year,” said Cllr Marlow who said she paid about R36 000 in fees for the club last year. The councillor said there were other groups involved in other sporting and recreational activities also needing support in the ward. She mentioned people in need of wheelchairs and HIV/Aids campaigns as examples. “The (karate) club did, however, write an official letter asking for sponsorship in the right and acceptable way, so I’ll sponsor them again,” Cllr Marlow said. DA councillor, Marlow did however, urge the karate club to continue seeking sponsorship. “They cannot depend on only one source for assistance,’ she said.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: NISSAN ALMERA

Nissan’s new Almera: big on car, small on price BETTIE GILIOMEE AT the end of last year Nissan launched new models in its Almera and Sentra range with the two basically switching places in the Japanese manufacturer’s range of models. The redesigned Almera is now competing in the smaller B-segment of the market for compact family cars while the new Sentra takes on the C-segment. Competitors of the new Almera, which is built in Chennai, India, and aimed at third world markets (and their poor road conditions), include the VW Polo Vivo, Hyundai Accent and Chevrolet Sonic. The Almera, whose name originates from the Spanish word “almendra - big diamond” will prove popular among especially young families, who need the extra space and practicality that this family sedan offers at an affordable price, or as Nissan says: Big on Car, Small on Price. Available in one model grade, the new Almera 1.5 Acenta is available in manual and automatic and retails for R165 000 and R175 500 respectively. Exterior A large exterior combined with a spacious in-

terior and boot are three of the big features of the Almera. In the looks department the Almera will not exactly turn heads, but it is also not one of those cars that you either like or dislike. It basically just looks like a practical, conservative family sedan. Interior But practical is a good thing – something which the Almera is big on literally. The back seat passengers will, especially, appreciate the big rear legroom. Not to mention the extra two air vents for the rear seat passengers with a dedicated, independent fan speed control. New parents will be overjoyed with the fact that their luggage would also be able to go with them on a holiday after all baby’s things are packed in. The upholstery is a durable black and grey cloth combination, with interior panels finished in black. Ride: The new Nissan Almera is available with a 1.5-litre petrol engine. According to Nissan, the low-emission and efficient engine allows the five-speed manual version of the new Nissan Almera to achieve a claimed average combined cycle fuel economy of 6.3-litres per 100 km, the four-speed automatic variant achieving 7.2.

It will not exactly burn rubber on the mom’s taxi route, but it sure has enough power and juice to take the family and their cargo comfortably on the long road. Safety Safety equipment comprises ABS with EBD and BAS, two airbags, five three-point seat belts, ISOFIX child seat anchor points, a third brake light and an immobiliser. Features: Apart from being big in size, the Almera is truly big on features for a vehicle in its price range. We have already mentioned the separate air vents for the rear passengers, but also impressive are the audio controls on the steering wheel, speed-sensitive auto-locking doors and a comprehensive trip computer. It also features remote central locking, electric door mirrors, a radio/CD/ MP3 audio system with

aux input port, four speakers, a height-adjustable driver’s seat and tilt adjustment for the steering wheel - quite an impressive list. Price: The all-new Nissan Almera range is available as standard with a 3-year/60 000km service plan and Nissan’s 3-year/100 00 km warranty. Service intervals are 15 000km. Swartkops United receives sponsorship of track suits SELBY MADIKANE OFFICIALS and players of Swartkops United FC of KwaZakhele were over the moon when General Petroleum Installations (GPI) generously sponsored them with tracksuits for their senior team squad recently. According to GPI Safety and Sponsorship officer Melumzi Raxa, GPI decided to plough back into the community as part of their corporate social investment. Raxa said, “We watched them when they were playing and we saw that they were a committed team which had no means. We decided to add value to the less fortunate com-

munity club. We are very delighted that Swartkops United had won ZWIFA First Division trophy. “That on its own shows that this club can reach the stars if the local business people can support them. Over the previous years we sponsored kit for this club over two seasons.” Swartkops United President Phindile Oliphant said that they were speechless but he revealed the sponsor meant a lot to their club. “We will make sure that the tracksuit will be worn at the right time. We will make sure that this kit is looked after. I want to say to GPI thanks for coming to our rescue,” said Oliphant.
