Clinics nurses booted out T
NCEBA DLADLA
HE Democratic Alliance (DA) is up in arms over what it claims is government’s failure to provide good working conditions for Nelson Mandela Bay nurses, thereby compromising service delivery.
According to the DA, nurses of Beyond Zero, a non-governmental organisation which contracts staff to the Department of Health, were “unceremoniously booted out of clinics” via a Whatsapp message, on Monday. “The facilities manager at the Zwide Clinic, a Mrs Monteith, was instructed to dismiss the staff by the Department of Health via the Whatsapp message,” DA shadow Health MEC

Baker said she will submit questions for written reply to the MEC of Health, Dr. Phumza Dyantyi, asking whether such action is le-

She said the cancellation of the contract was not only unfair, it was also compromising residents who depended on the public health system. This act was also contradicting Circular 1 of 2015 which stated “unequivocally” that there was funding available for the retention of staff currently under the employ of the Department of Health, said Barker. Circular 1 of 2015 was signed by the department’s superintendent-general. “Despite staff appeals for reasons for their dismissals, the DOH District office in the

gal given the written undertaking in Circular 1 of 2015. She would also ask why the commitment to employ Beyond Zero staff on a fixed term contract from 01 April 2015 to 31 March 2016 has been breached; whether Beyond Zero staff will be paid for the month of April 2015; for a full explanation of reasons for termination of the services of Beyond Zero staff and a detailed breakdown of the allocation funds dedicated to salaries for Beyond Zero staff for a full year in Circular 1 of 2015. Express Indaba’s attempt to solicit a comment from the Department of Health’s provincial spokesman, Sizwe Kupelo, drew a blank. Kupelo asked for questions via email and those were not answered by the time the newspaper went to print.
