Treppie hits the townships NCEBA DLADLA

NTREPRENEURSHIP among township residents will be receiving a big boost with a visit by The Medo Treppie – a mobile entrepreneur incubator – in Motherwell this

Treppie is a truck that has been equipped with 10 computers, internet connectivity and a team to assist entrepreneurs with advice, free of charge.

The Treppie, – an adaptation of Entrepreneur – is the fruit of a partnership between Isuzu Trucks, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and Motherwell Urban Renewal Programme.

This move to foster small business development and job creation in and around Port Elizabeth, sees MEDO running a week-long tour in search of exceptional individuals who aspire to take their small businesses to the next level.

The organisers are inviting entrepreneurs to visit the mobile office to pitch their businesses.

Successful applicants will receive a boost to their enterprise in the form of access to further

DO Project Manager Noluthando Tutani said Treppie was bringing services to aspiring entrepreneurs who wanted to start their business but lacked the fundamentals to do so or young people who needed inspiration to start what could later become a successful business.

“We are here in partnership with the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality to promote entrepreneurship and enterprising ideas in the communities close to the (Isuzu) factory and in the wider Bay area,” said Tutani who with members of her organisation were answering questions from very interested individuals.

Assistance is being given in Information Technology (IT) and ensuring that local entrepreneurs were IT connected in order to broaden their economic base.

Tutani said they also ran opportunity recognition workshops for young entrepreneurs, job seekers and people who had business ideas to identify opportunities and start making a success of their businesses plans.

“I came here to enquire about getting a licence as I have a Seda Retail and Wholesale Certificate,” said Motherwell resident Thomas Baloyi. Another prospective entrepreneur, Ndileka Mdodana said, she came to know more about IT and Business Administration.

“I’ve already started registering my entertainment, events and management business, but I came to learn more about the business plan, business proposal and about expanding my network,” said Makhaya Mzisi, also of Motherwell.

Minister Xasa hosts Traditional Initiation Summit KEY stakeholders will attend a three day summit to address initiation deaths.

The MEC for the Department of Co-operative Governance and Traditional Affairs (COGTA) in the Eastern Cape Province, FD Xasa convened the three day traditional initiation summit from 29-31 October at Dan’s Lodge in the OR Tambo District Municipality.

Key stakeholders will discuss practical and implementable action plans to deal with challenges confronting traditional initiation in the Eastern Cape. One of the Summit’s objectives is to ensure the safe passage of boys to manhood.

“We are proud of our custom hence we need to restore and preserve its dignity for the benefit of generations to come. The summit is a meeting of minds to come up with implementable ideas to adapt and change with the times when confronting the challenges bedevilling traditional initiation in our Province,” said MEC Xasa.

Some of the invited guests include national Minister of COGTA Pravin Gordhan, Deputy Minister of Traditional Affairs Obed Bapela, Minister of Health, Elias Motsoaledi, representatives from Provincial Houses of Traditional Leaders from Limpopo, Mpumalanga, Free State, National members of the House, national

and provincial members of the Congress of Traditional Leaders, Mayors and Executive Mayors, Speakers from the host District and Local Municipalities and stakeholders including Council of Churches and Men 4 Change.

Regrettably, in the winter season, the ives of 36 initiates were lost whilst others had botched circumcision. During this season sixteen people have been arrested and are currently facing charges relating to death, botched circumcision, unlawful circumcision and operating illegal initiation schools.

Commissions focussing on various topics will ensure that the summit adopts recommendations to be implemented by all stakeholders come the summer season. These will include clarifying the role of municipalities in the provision of resources to monitoring teams during the traditional initiation seasons.

“COGTA-EC has noted with concern the increase of illegal initiation schools from 602 in December 2013 to 1342 in June 2014,” said MEC Xasa.

If all initiatives fail, government will be left with no option but to introduce compulsory Male Medical Circumcision (MMC) in all the affected areas. – REPORTER

IDP and Budget preparation meetings continue NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki has commended the robust deliberations taking place in the IDP and Budget preparation meetings since last week.

According to Mniki, every meeting went on well, except for Ward 36’s meeting which did not materialise last week and was rescheduled to take place yesterday (Tuesday, October 21) He said, “We’d like to express appreciation to members of the media for their support and would urge that they continue as the journey to the robust and intimate interactions would continue in the meetings scheduled for this week.”

Should SA take the opportunity to host Africa Cup of Nations?

The Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula however, is reported to have counted the costs and reasoned that it wouldn’t be wise for the country to take over from Morocco.

Funeka Kala (32) of Njoli said, “I don't think we should take ACN. The Minister is right. My fear is with Ebola. And, we’re not in the right state economically. So for me, let us use whatever amount of funds we have to develop the country and its people.”

He said, “I had Ministers talk about this disease and think that we should not try anything that would expose us to Ebola- it looks deadlier than HIV/Aids. It kills people in numbers.”

“Why would Morocco not host it (the ACN)? Asked Zola Faku (63) of New Brighton. He explained, “We too would not want to expose ourselves to such a deadly disease. Ebola is dangerous, the Minister is right, we should not even consider it!”

Rev. Jesse Jackson visits Mandela Bay INDABA REPORTER DURING the dark days of Apartheid many men and women fought for the liberation of South Africa and its people facing racial degradation and even death at the hands of evil men, but God resurrected them.

This was the powerful picture painted by Reverend Jesse Jackson, considered to be one of the most prominent African American leaders during the 70s, 80s and 90s, during visits to the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, Zwide Cemetery, the Athenaeum and the Donkin Reserve.

“Evil men crucified these leaders but God resurrected them. There are those who can still tell us their story. Your Mayor (Executive Mayor Benson Fihla) spent fourteen years on Robben Island and under house arrest and it was not for a traffic stop. To have someone with the legacy of the anti-Apartheid struggle like him leading this city is a great blessing.

“Nelson Mandela is recognized as the face of the struggle but there are leaders like your Mayor that deserve praise for their role. It seems that people are not aware of his role,” Jackson said.

Mbeki lecture at the Feathermarket Hall last night (Tuesday, 21 October).

At a graduation ceremony for municipal councillors on Monday, Jackson reminded them that they had an important role to play to break through the layers of Apartheid.

“I was in Port Elizabeth in 1979 before it was named Nelson Mandela Bay. People are free today to do what they want without fear.

“However they are free but not equal.

Equality is the next dimension of our struggle as Apartheid has many layers. We still have Apartheid of our minds and our bod-

ies,” he said.

Known for his opposition against the Apartheid system and Segregation in America, Jackson, among many other achievement,. also negotiated the release of forty seven Americans and other nationalities after the invasion of Kuwait by Iraq in August 1990 amongst many other achievements.

Jackson said he was very impressed with the growth and progress in South Africa over the last twenty years.

“More people have houses now, drinkable water and can work in high places. I am very impressed with the growth of South Africa,” he added.

Municipality gives hope to Melisizwe pupils NELSON Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) was described by Melisizwe Primary School as a Good Samaritan when it handed over school uniforms to 20 less fortunate learners on Thursday.

According to NMBM Speaker Maria Hermans, the motive behind the school uniform handover was “to give what belongs to the community”. Hermans stated that the Municipality was mindful of the fact that the community deserved better. “Our Municipality deals with serious conditions of our communities. We decided to come to the rescue of the 20 learners who are least fortunate in the population of this institution. We would like to thank Natasha Prince and her team of the Scripture Union fieldworkers who equipped these 20 learners with life skills for high school.” One of the recipients, Melvin Cikishe, said he felt overwhelmed because his living conditions had been changed.

George stated that the NMBM had changed the lives of their pupils. George says, “NMBM shows they are our Good Samaritan because these pupils are in dire need of assistance. Today our Municipality has added hope to these Grade 6 learners. We are very grateful to be supported at this crucial time. These learners will never forget what the Municipality has done for them.

This is history to these learners. ANC Ward 55 Councillor Mthunzi Madolo, who was visibly excited, thanked the NMBM for donating uniforms to the learners.

COEGA Development Corporation (CDC) and FAW South Africa made a huge difference to 49 learners at Imbasa Primary School to whom they donated school uniforms on Wednesday.

Imbasa Primary School is situated deep in Motherwell NU 12 which is characterised by high poverty levels and unemployment.

According to CDC Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Manager Thandi Rayi, the donation to Imbasa Primary is part of Coega Development Corporation’s CSI programme in partnership with one of its investors –FAW SA. CDC CSI Manager Rayi said, “We decided to come to the rescue of the people who have nothing to make their lives change.

We are committed to uplifting the living standard of our people. We want the less fortunate learners to realise that there are people in our communities who can make the lives of the desperate learners change.”

Imbasa Primary School Welfare Committee Convener Luleka Sesman stated that the donation of school uniform came at the right time. “Our learners will be able to cope during the lessons because CDC and FAW SA donation has made a huge impact on the lives of these learners. We are very grateful that CDC and FAW SA have made a generous donation in the form of brand-new school uniforms,” said Sesman.

Cyber Café offering free IT training for township residents REPORTER A MOTHERWELL-based IT entrepreneur is tackling the challenge of technological illiteracy head on by offering free computer training for residents of the township at his internet café.

The intention is to help people master the basics around internet usage such as sending and receiving emails, creating and saving documents, sending attachments and using social media.

Siphamandla Javu, the owner and founder of Mzansi Cyber Café, based in NU1 in Motherwell, says the chronic lack of basic computer skills he noticed amongst the Café’s clientele motivated him to do something to improve the technical capabilities of residents in the area.

“It bothered me how many people were coming into the Cyber Café to do quite simple things, like attach their CV to an email and send it off for a job application, but were unable to do so without help from my staff.

“The same applied to typing up a CV, searching online job portals, create an email account…the needs are considerable and I felt I had to do something to help my community, especially the youngsters, who have very little chance of finding a decent job without these basic computer skills,” he explains.

Even when PC training is offered for free, many young people do not have the money to travel to the college or library where it takes place, so they miss out. I wanted to offer an alternative, township-based opportunity that is quick, simple and very practical in nature,” adds Javu.

Mandla’s entrepreneurial spirit and generous nature have seen him win the Africa SMME Award in 2012 as well as be selected for the SAB Kickstart programme, of which he is currently a part.

His Cyber Café, which offers internet access, faxing, typing, graphic design and other services, is one component of the business, alongside a full CCTV, PABX, intercom systems and access control installation offering called Mzansi Telecoms.

“My dream is to connect every township in SA to the global village, starting with Motherwell. Technology has the potential to solve many of our social problems.

Top runners expected at NMB City Half marathon REPORTER PRESIDENT of Athletics South Africa, Aleck Skhosana last week attended the launch of the Nelson Mandela Bay City Half Marathon, the richest half marathon in South Africa with a purse of R350 000.

Saturday, November 15 will see the inaugural race starting and finishing at Pollok Beach along the fastest route in South Africa. There are two laps and two turning points.

Plans and arrangements are heavily underway in staging this event which has been earmarked to equal Comrades and Two Oceans and is supported by the NMB Municipality and EPA. Already final travel plans are being discussed for the top Kenyan runners to participate, including the winner of Comrades Luduick Mamabolo.

The running circles within Nelson Mandela Bay are literally abuzz with excitement as to what this means for Nelson Mandela Bay – placing the city well and truly on the map, and offering international and South African runners another running destination.

The driving forces behind the run, Alan Taylor and Mike Mbambani, both have very deep roots in athletics in general, but specifically road running.

Mike retired from road running in 2002 and became actively involved with Liberty Nike as Chairman from 2002 to 2007 and Mr Price EP Chairman from 2008 to 2011. In 2012 he founded a development club in Motherwell, Ikhamva Athletics Club of which he is a Chairman.

He is also a former Deputy President of EPA, as well as Deputy Chairman of the Road Running Commission. Added to that he has been a member of ASA Council for two terms.

His love for road running development saw him coming up with one of the most exciting road races on the EPA calendar in the form of a Freedom Run. Alan, who has been a runner for most of his life and has taken part in Comrades and Two Oceans and a multitude of marathons, is also well known for his long-term contributions to various charities. The Lake Farm Charity Run, which has been in existence for 20 years, is his creation. The Big Tree Run is also Alan’s idea to assist runners in preparing for ultra-marathons like Two Oceans and Comrades. Funds raised from this event are directed towards Riding for the Disabled.

With their combined knowledge and expertise they identified the huge gap between young track and field athletes and road running in middle distance events and they established this half marathon to address the need for a structured transition between the two.

Mike said “We can only offer the big prize money and fast route, but the race itself will be relying solely on the media for exposure of the event, and the public in general for both support and participants. With the baking of these two entities we can put this event on the map.”

With a purse of R350 000 a unique facet of this event is that category winners will compete in 5 year increments whilst all other halfmarathons have 10 year increments. The increments are, for example, 35 – 39, then 40 – 44 right up to 70, with substantial prize money.

Any category winner breaking an EP record will receive R5 000.

Medals will be in the form of a key ring and bottle opener, a handy and useful tool. Gold medals will be awarded to the first 10 males and females across the finish line, silver up to position 400 and thereafter bronze medals.

Movers’ right wing Thamsanqa Zondani and left wing Mbongeni Keita Yako pressurised United’s wing backs with Yako missing opportunities. Movers’ veteran midfielder Andile Ace Buthelezi played the most phenomenal role in the centre of the park, thus distributing perfect passes to his front men. Nabo, affectionately called Rara by his fans, scored three quick goals in the late minutes of the first half

with United not replying.

In the second half Movers’ dangerman Yako reminded the fans that he was the most composed striker when he registered four goals. Zondani put the last nail into the coffin of United following his well-taken goal. United’s consolation goals were scored by Lindile Payi and Lungisile Breakfast to make the final score 8-2 in favour of Movers.

Young Ideas lost their first game of the season 2-1 to Lion City at Motherwell NU 9. With the return of goalkeeper Ntembeko Mbombota, City looked very solid at their goals. The first half solitary goal came courtesy of City’s half back Andile Gerrie Nyodi. City launched a defiant campaign but the high-spirited Ideas, led by Asanda Matsitse Makana, put up a good fight.

Township primary schools tag rugby results SELBY MADIKANE THE introduction of tag rugby to township primary school girls was appreciated by the rugby legends.

Community sports developer Dr Nomatemba Gum, who is passionate about rugby, sponsored a primary schools’ girls tag rugby tournament.

Gum, a physiotherapist who played for African Bombers LRFC, stated that the fundamental objective of tag rugby was to introduce the basic rules of rugby to the primary school girls.

Former Springbok legend Lucky Mange hailed Gum for staging a huge tournament as a platform to introduce tag rugby to primary school girls. Mange went on by saying that Nomatemba was a role model to the community and he said that Nomatemba deserved an accolade.

Mange said, “Nomatemba has a passion for rugby and she does not expect remuneration but she wants to see girls playing sports. There are few business people who are doing what Nomatemba is doing for the poor communities. I fully commend Nomatemba for using her own resources on behalf of the children who hail

NMMU Quantity Surveying Students Society raise funds for Charles Duna Gr R SELBY MADIKANE NMMU Quantity Surveying Students Society joined hands to raise funds for the building of Charles Duna Primary School Gr R classroom.

Charles Duna Primary School Principal Nombulelo Sume said she kindly requested NMMU to do something for their Gr R class.

“My Gr R classroom is overcrowded and the conditions are appalling. You know that they use the old toilet block as their classroom. Therefore I decided to talk to NMMU to help us to go through this diffi-

cult situation. I am happy that the university authorities listened and responded positively.

One of the Quantity Surveying students Anda Ngxukumeshe said that they sold cakes twice a week for Charles Duna to accomplish their mission of building the Gr R classroom. Ngxukumeshe added that they roped in some sponsors such as Association of South African Quantity Survey (ASAQS), Wimpy Airport and Prof Gaye le Roux. Another student Emile Naidu stated that they decided to play soccer and netball and take part in athletics with the learners of Charles Duna to a day fun and to show that NMMU is a community institution.

NELSON Mandela Bay Absa Premiership Football outfit Chippa United faces a stiff test againt the defending Absa Champions Mamelodi Sundowns at Nelson Mandela Bay stadium today, Wednesday 22 October.

This is after the Roger Sikhakhane ledoutfit beat Amazulu at Prince Magogo stadium in the KZN at the weekend.

Sikhakhane took over the reigns as a caretaker coach after the newly promoted local outfit parted ways with head coach Kostadin Papic on September 3. The Serbian-born Papic left to join Polokwane City.

Sikhakhane has to date won three matches outright.

Chippa United, better known as the Chilli Boys, are currently standing at 6th position in the Absa Premiership Log, just below the fifth-placed Amasandawana (Sundowns).

Questions are asked whether Sikhakhane has not gained the confidence of the management to make this coaching position his own.

Kick Off reported that the Chilli Boys owner Siviwe ‘Chippa’ Mpengesi said the man must first meet his targets before he

would entertain installing him as the permanent coach of the team.

Mpengesi, according to the Kickoff reports, said he would not be rushed into making a decision about the future of Sikhakhane.

He said, “He is still a caretaker coach and he is not gonna be appointed now because he must first meet his target. He is not far, though, and I can’t disclose anthing because it is a confidential matter between the employer and employee.”

Mpengesi, however, it seems, was not blind to the surprise that Sikhakhane was able to spring to keep the Chilli Boys firmly entrenched in the Proffesional Soccer League.

“One thing that I can tell you is that he (Sikhakhane) is not far. He has surprised us as well, you know what I mean. Three wins in a row. Look at the points we have.

We have 13 points. In our previous campaign [in the PSL in 2012/13] we played 19 games. We still had 13 points so now after eight games, we have 13 points. There is something good about this team.”

At home against former Bafana Bafana coach Pitso Mosemane’s boys can’t the Chilli Boys still deliver? Fans would be advised to buy tickets and see for themselves.

THE successful hosting of the HSBC Sevens Series (IRB7’s) in Nelson Mandela Bay over the last three years tipped Port Elizabeth as the frontrunner to renew the host city agreement with the South African Rugby Union (Saru) from 2015.

This follows after attendance figures at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium increased from 36 000 in 2012 to 58 500 in 2013 - an increment of 63%.

Portfolio Committee Chairperson for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Nomamerica Soul said a letter was already forwarded to Saru to inform them that Nelson Mandela Bay is interested in renewing the host city agreement for another term.

“The success over the last couple of years boosted our changes to the extent that Saru has indicated that they will consider extending the contract without opening a bid process, if the NMBM is interested in retaining the event.

Stokes won NODEFA Build It U/13 tournament SELBY MADIKANE NODEFA Build It U/13 Tournament turned into a resounding success with Stokes United taking honours at Jabavu Rugby Stadium last Saturday.

In the quarterfinals fireworks were produced with fans standing on their feet. Jamaican Stars lost 4-3 to All City Stars on penalties after a 1-1 fulltime tie while New City Stars whacked Khayelitsha Stars 5-0.

Young Cosmos earned a hard 3-2 win over Highland Spurs, with Stokes United overco-ming Imbabala Young Stars 3-0.

In the semifinals New City Stars booked themselves a berth in the finals when they eliminated All City Stars 3-0.

Stokes United continued to beat tough opponents when they defeated Young Cosmos 2-1.

In the finals Stokes United walked away with the trophy, 16 miniature trophies, kit bag and 16 players’ bags when they edged out New City Stars 3-2 on penalties after a 1-1 fulltime draw. Stars received 16 sliver miniature trophies.

Stokes player of the tournament Likamva George was awarded a voucher to the tune of R1000 to buy school uniform and pay school fees in 2015.

Milan Stars held to a draw by Romans AFTER a long season’s break, it was back to business in the MOFA Build It Premier League at NU 9 Stadium over the past weekend.

Having won the MOFA Knockout Trophy, Milan Stars found the going getting tough as Young Romans held them to a 1-1 draw in their tough game. Stars’ marksmen Buntu Mnyamana and Zukisani Rala exerted pressure on Romans defenders but they were resolute and tenacious.
