Call centre an answer for job creation
NCEBA DLADLA
T
HE official opening of a call centre in Walmer’s 6th Avenue Shopping Complex last Friday has been hailed as a positive development towards job creation in the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. Nelson Mandela Bay Executive Mayor Benson Fihla has welcomed the valuable investment by Mutual Finance Analysts which has already provided 90 jobs for previously unemployed young people of the metro. “The jobs that you have got will go a long way towards improving your economic situation and that of your families,” said the Mayor, adding that he was overjoyed by the prospects of an improved economy as a result of the participation of these new employees. The call centre deals in sales for different companies across South Africa and the international community. Their head office is in Cape Town. Business Process Outsourcing (BPO)’s projects, such as the call centre, has proven to be a major job creating sector in Nelson Mandela Bay. BPO is a method of subcontracting various business-related operations to a third party. This includes the outsourcing of services. According to Economic Development and Recreation Acting Executive Director Anele Qaba, BPO has been prioritised by government for its huge potential to accelerate job creation and economic growth. According to Qaba, the department of trade and industry’s Industrial Policy Action Plan (IPAP) recognises the BPO sector’s ability to create 100 000 jobs for the country and contribute about R8 billion to the national gross domestic product by 2014. “Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM) is encouraged by the latest developments,” said Qaba. Qaba said that this investment follows other high-profile investments in the call centre industry by Discovery Health in 2011 and Biz-
works early this year. Discovery Health’s centre is at Coega Industrial Development Zone BPO Park and Bizworks is at Coega Vulindlela Village. Economic Development Portfolio Chairman, Councillor Babalwa Lobishe called for close relations between all spheres of government, business and labour. “We recognise and acknowledge that we can
not do it alone. The process so far is giving us a reason to hope for a better future for Nelson Mandela Bay and Eastern Cape as a whole,” said Councillor Lobishe. “The interactions we have had with the municipality’s Economic Development directorate made us see that Nelson Mandela Bay is a city of choice when choosing an investment destination,” said Mutual Finance Analysts Director,

Anthony Williams, adding that NMB is the first choice for the expansion of their operations. “We are aware that the responsibility of job creation can not only be a government responsibility. As business we need to be at the centre,” said Williams. “More campaigns are in the pipeline and we’ll create more jobs in PE,” said Campaigns Manager Angelique Green.

Nelson Mandela Bay residents speak about the impending teachers strike PE Express Indaba reporter NCEBA DLADLA asked readers what they thought about the Department of Education’s plan to cut 4 000 teaching jobs and SADTU’s threat to strike thereafter NCEBA DLADLA THE Eastern Cape Department of Education has been reported as saying it is going to cut more than 4 000 teaching post next year because according to its numbers, there are more teachers in the payroll than are required. SADTU, the largest teacher organisation on the other hand, has threatened to strike if the Department continued with the plan. According to Sadtu, there are still many teachers faced with overcrowding in the province owing to a shortage of teachers.

) Mzwamadoda Booi of Kwazakhele said, “It is not for government to decide to cut down on teaching post because there is always a need for teachers. But again, I don’t think it is right for teachers to strike because our chidren will suffer the consequences.” ) “Government shouldn’t cut down on teaching posts. There are no jobs out there. Where are the retrenched teachers going to find employment? As parents we are concerned that should teachers strike, it will destablise our children’s education ahead of end-of-the year examinations,” said Thobile Peter of New Brighton.
Mzwamadoda Booi
) Vuyiseka Mani of KwaDwesi wished that government had done a thorough research to come up with teachers’ numbers because to retrench teachers while many township schools still complain of the shortage of teachers will not assist education. Said Mani, “We’ve got a high number of schools in need of teachers in the metro. The department shouldn’t cut down on teachers, that will take us back to the apartheid years.” ) “Teachers shouldn’t strike, no matter what, because children will suffer at the end of the day,” said Charmell Cramford from Bloemendal.
Thabisa Njokweni
) “Government likes to give wrong numbers, probably to save money. I hope this is not one example of their poor counting because children will suffer if more teachers are losing their jobs,” said Thabisa Njokweni of Algoa Park. ) “Retrenchment is not acceptable. Unemployment is already sky-high. For me, government should do thorough research because I cannot see how there are many teachers required with so many teachers still without posts. Or, if there is no money, they had better cut down on the Ministers’ and Councillors’ salaries to pay teachers,” said Zolani Willem from Joe Slovo.

MEC wants people to speak isiXhosa, or the language dies NCEBA DLADLA MEC for Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture Xoliswa Tom has implored people of the province to continue speaking isiXhosa. Speaking at the EC Choral Music Associa-
tion Festival at the Nangoza Jebe Hall last Saturday, the MEC said while she enjoyed listening to people speaking and singing in different languages like English, it was, however, important that the vernacular is spoken. “In the 2011 Census it was found that the number of people in the province who spoke
isiXhosa had dropped to 76,3% from the 83,3% of the previous census.. That means we are no longer speaking the language,” said MEC Tom, adding that she hoped she would not be construed as being against people speaking English. “Our language is our culture and culture is the essence of who we are. If we lose our
culture, we’ll lose who we are!” “You’ll find in some schools isiXhosa Language period clashes with Mathematics. That is wrong! You can’t force children to choose between their home language and Maths, a very critical discipline in education. We must encourage our children to speak isiXhosa, at home and at school.”
Air Products Company boosts Bay schools INDABA REPORTER THREE schools in Nelson Mandela Bay are set to benefit from a generous donation by industrial gas company, Air Products. The schools, Mngcunube Primary School in KwaNobuhle, Nomathamsanqa Primary School in Despatch and Seyisi Primary School in Kwazakhele, require various essential assets – which include desks, chairs, carpets, sick beds, and kitchen utensils – to better the learners’ learning conditions. Air Products Eastern Cape Area Sales Manager, Pierre Fourie, recently handed the cheque for R41 600 over to Community Chest Chief Executive, Beulah Lumkwana, who will ensure the hand-over to the three schools. “Through the Community Chest we came to know about the urgent needs of these schools, and we simply had to assist. As a company we believe that giving
back to the communities in which we live and operate is essential,” said Fourie. According to Lumkwana the Community Chest is involved in these schools to assist in sourcing equipment that will ensure an environment that is conducive for learning. “Currently, these learners sit on the ground with no chairs or carpets, and those who prepare food for the children have no kitchen utensils to work with. We thank Air Products for their donation that will make a remarkable difference to the learning conditions of these learners,” said Lumkwana

Residents and bank customers warned NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in conjunction with the SA Banking Risk Information Centre (SABRIC) are warning members of the community and customers to not become victim to robbers. The SAPS in the Uitenhage Cluster launched an awareness campaign last Tuesday to warn especially those who carry cash to and from the bank to deposit or withdraw money, and to be wary of their surroundings in the fight against organised crime. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart, members of the SAPS started the festive season with the distribution
of pamphlets in the CBD last Tuesday. “Members informed the community of specific crime tendencies and how to avoid becoming a victim of crime,” said W/O Swart. To avoid crime, SABRIC Chief Executive Officer (CEO) Kyalami Pillay advised customers to use alternative ways to bank, adding that the bank themselves were willing to advise clients on different banking solutions. This includes individuals, small businesses and saving clubs like stokvels, according to Pillay. “We advise bank customers to consider alternative methods of banking, such as using internet or ATM transfers as opposed to carrying cash,” said Pillay. It is important that customers are extra care-

Nombuso Makasi launches DVD this Saturday THAMSANQA MBOVANE GOSPEL artist Nombuso Makasi of Dynamic Gospel Group is set to release her 10-track DVD, Andiboni, at Babs Madlakane Hall in KwaNobuhle this coming Saturday, October 26. The event will feature groups like Blaze Jazz Band, Unathi, the Bomb, and many more. Admission will be R40 at this event which will start at 2pm. Nombuso says she will not be deterred by the fact that posters for her concert which she has put up around the city, have been vandalised. “I have recently discovered that the posters that I put up to promote my event have been sprayed. The event will still continue, no matter what. This is the work of Satan and nothing else. It is painful for an event to be sabotaged in this way because I spent a lot of money to produce these posters.” “I was born and bred in Uitenhage. I came from Johannesburg
where I spent three years pursuing music, to plough back into the Eastern Cape. I am now very disappointed. I have been let down by people of my hometown.” Bambo Mbityo, secretary of the Uitenhage Arts and Culture Organisation, said, “This is absolutely uncalled for. At times when I have my own jazz shows, I put banners and posters up when it’s dark outside. I don’t want people to know whose event it is associated with because they would sabotage it by damaging banners.” Thobile Makasi, president of the Uitenhage and District Gospel Board, also condemned the incident. He said, “We recently discovered that one of our groups, Youth in Action’s banners were also damaged by criminals. There were holes in the banners as if they had been stabbed several times!” “There are cost implications when it comes to making banners or posters, so we condemn this in the strongest terms.”

ful because these criminals work in syndicates. Once the perpetrators identify their victims, they pass on the information to their co-perpetrators, who are usually in the vicinity of the bank, and who in turn rob the individuals, either at their place of business, home, or en route to their destination. While there is a decline of 7.4% in the statistics of these robberies for the period January to September 2013, with 1 003 incidents opposed to the 1 083 incidents in the same period in 2012, Pillay believes these numbers still remain high. Warrant Officer Swart said there would be specific actions hosted in the various policing areas of the Uitenhage Cluster to ensure that nobody become a victim of such crimes.

Izitibili Competition at Opera House this Sunday NCEBA DLADLA PORT Elizabeth (PE) Opera House in conjunction with Nelson Mandela Choral Association (NEMCA) will present a Choral Music Competition at the PE Opera House this Sunday October 27 from 11 am.
Bay residents to come in droves to support this wonderful initiative. We are calling people back to their roots. We have been to the West so much. Masibuyel’embo mawethu!” pleaded NEMCA
Chairperson Nodoli Rala. Rala said it was incumbent upon parents, especially, to come to the show and support their children. The move to bring back choral music to the Bay must be
supported so that choirs will not die as a result of lack of support. Tickets cost R100 (for 1), R150 (for 2) and R200 (for 3) and are available at the door.
“This is our idea of unearthing and developing choral music in Nelson Mandela Bay in the same way that we’ve been developing performing arts like acting, music and dance,” said PE Opera House Music Producer Thobela Fibi. Fibi said Izitibili Music Competition is the PE Opera House’s General Manager Monde Ngonyama’s idea of bringing this historic institution closer to the people. “We decided to work with an existing structure - Nelson Mandela Choral Music Association - which is also working hard to bring back what has always been the love of local residents, choral music,” said Fibi. Unlike the other choral music competitions that look at hymnals that are written in scores, this particular competition will, however, entertain Izitibili - that unscored music like folklore, gospel and struggle songs, said Fibi. “We urge Nelson Mandela

Funding sought for three Bay Chess Champs NCEBA DLADLA TWO New Brighton lasses, Elethu Pongwana and Pumela Mkuhlu, are working very hard to raise funds to help Nelson Mandela Bay chess champions, who live in the townships, to go to the national games in Durban in December. Nyameko Salman of Charles Duna Primary School, Anesipho Balfour of Ndzondelelo High and Ndzondelelo Payi of Lwazilwethu High are among the ten children that won in the Chess Championships held at the Boardwalk ICC in June. Elethu and Pumela said the children were each given raffles by the organisers and were expected to raise the funds for their flights and accommodation in Durban. “I’d like to go to Durban. But at home they
don’t have this amount of money,” said Nyameko. “We are concerned that the three who come from the townships are not going to make the trip. They come from poor backgrounds with their families not being able to afford to pay for their transport and accommodation,” said Elethu, adding that transport alone was estimated at around R5 000. “We’d also like to raise a little bit more for each to get pocket money,” said Pumela. “We’re very proud of Nyameko’s achievement as a school pupil. But equally concerned that without the funds he might not get this once in a life-time opportunity,” said Charles Duna principal Nombulelo Sume. According to Sume, the school was willing to nurture the talent of the young children, but finds funding to be a huge stumbling block. . eksklusief aanlyn by

Proof of this is a visit by Deputy Minister of Communications, Stella Ndabeni-Abrahams to Nelson Mandela Bay on Monday to launch Cyber Labs at four township schools. The Department of Communications (DOC), through its delivery arm – the Universal Service Access Agency of South Africa, gave John Masiza Primary School of Walmer, Thamsanqa High of Kwazakhele, Sakhisizwe High of Zwide and Ndyebo High School of Motherwell each 40 computers, two-years internet connectivity, a projector, screen, printer and furniture, all courtesy of USAASA. “Sakhisizwe High School teachers received
25 iPads, over and above the computers,” according to Department spokesperson Busiswa Mlandu. Mlandu said the schools’ connectivity progranmme is part of her Department’s mandate to ensure rural development through access to Information Communication Technologies. The Deputy Minister urged the schools and communities to look well after the computers, adding that nearby schools and community members could also benefit from using the internet. “We would like the school and members of the community to take ownership of these computer centres. People who seek employment or need any information will use the internet to find assistance,” said Ndabeni-Abrahams. So far about 42 schools in the province have been connected in the roll-out Implementation Plan aimed at for this financial year.

LAFARGE South Africa’s Moregrove Quarry recently hosted Motherwell schools at an event aimed at informing pupils about the products that the quarry produces as well as career opportunities in the sector. Lafarge Moregrove Quarry has been heavily involved for some years in supplying stone for the construction of Coega Harbour. Following the site experience, the four schools, Soqhayisa Senior Secondary School, Ndyebo Senior Secondary School, Masiphathisane Senior Secondary School and Motherwell Senior Secondary School were invited by Lafarge to take part in a debating competition that would build on some of the knowledge gained from the quarry visit. “The ability to communicate your views clearly and present a strong line of argument is a tremendous asset for furthering
your careers,” said Master of Ceremonies for the debating event, Lafarge’s Country Communications Manager, Charlene Lamb. In the first round of the competition, Soqhayisa Senior Secondary School competed against Ndyebo Senior Secondary School, debating the motion: “The aggregates and concrete production environment is suitable for women”. Masiphathisane Senior Secondary School and Motherwell Senior Secondary School debated, “It is possible to produce aggregate in an environmentally friendly way”. The winners then debated the controversial motion, “Nationalisation of mines should be implemented”, to decide the overall winner. Lafarge’s Transformation Manager, Esther Seabi, said “the students had to research the topics and develop strong wellreasoned arguments. Learning to stand up and confidently present these arguments in English was a valuable training that will benefit them in all walks of life.” “We wanted to make a meaningful difference with our CSI programme and this meant partnering with more than one school,” commented Seabi. Two of the 4 competing schools at the recent dabate sponsored by building material producer Lafarge included Masiphatisane Senior Secondary School and Motherwell Senior Secondary School. These teams debated the motion: “It is possible to produce aggregates in an environmentally friendly way”. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

EC women making strides in SA boxing NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape women have made great strides in South African boxing which is still male dominated. Since the South African Boxing Act of 2001 allowed the female species into the ring as boxers, having made their mark as ring officials and promoters, Eastern Cape women have graduated as World Boxing Champions, Category A Promoters and A-list ring officials. “When women do something, they do it to the best of their ability,” said Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza. Mapitiza has groomed Noni Fukuthwa, the Top 10 Ring Official in the country who came to the sport in the late 1990s. Fukuthwa was following in the footsteps of the internationally recognised Siya VabazaBooi of East London who was a rose among the thorns in the fisticuffs when it was still not fashionable for women to be referees and judges. Vabaza-Booi has been recognised with multiple-awards for her stirling performances including the coveted BSA Ring Official Award. In the late 1980s and early 1990s there were two women associated with boxing and they were Port Elizabeth Ringside Doctors May Magwayi and Phumela Fatman. Then came Port Elizabeth’s Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene (72) who has been promoting boxing
since 1995. “More women must come to the sport. Let us support our children who love the sport. I am old now and would like to see more women promoting boxing,” said Tsenene whose Rainbow Boxing Promotions had a tournament two weeks back. Tsenene remains the only woman in the country to bag BSA’s Promoter of the Year Award (2010), Eastern Cape Premier’s Award for Excellence (Boxing) in 2011 and Ellerines Eastern Cape Promoter of the Year Award (1998). Tsenene was followed by PE born and Gauteng-based Mbali “Don Queen” Zantsi who heads Showtime, an international boxing promotions company. Like Zantsi, Gauteng-based former SA Welterweight champion Rita Mrwebi is from Mthatha in the Eastern Cape. Noni “She Bee Stinging” Tenge became the first South African Female to win the highly recognised IBF Welterweight diadem (which she later lost unfortunately outside the ring) to add to her WBF title followed by the current champion Unathi “Showtime” Myekeni who won the WBF Junior Featherweight title. The province is inundated with great boxing talent with SA Champion Nomandithini Ndyambo among those to watch. Also in the mix are Noxolo Makhanavu, Nozwelethu Mathosi and KO specialist Nozipho Bell.
