Motherwell’s Imbasa Primary wins national music competition NCEBA DLADLA
I
MBASA Primary School girls made Nelson Mandela Bay and the Eastern Cape proud for winning the South African Schools Choral Eisteddfod Music National Competition in the Sextet category early this month.
The dedicated girls, Yonela Tenge, Silindokuhle Mtanase, Ntulikazi Cacela, Thembakazi Gagayi, Mihlali Giya and Anelisiwe Manase, aged between 10 and 12 years from the impoverished area of NU12 Motherwell in
Port Elizabeth, competed in the German piece “Seid uns zweiten” and won the hearts of the national adjudicators in the competition held at the Rhema Church, in Midrand, Johannesburg from July 2 to 3, 2013. Though the competition was held during the province’s mid-year vacation, it was not a problem for dedicated school choir conductor Nyameka Vara who has found her replicas in these highly talented children she fondly referred to as “my angels.” “It wasn’t easy during the school holidays but the parents and members of staff gave me their full support. Even when we were still on
the road, they phoned asking where we were and whether everything was fine. We had to do it for them,” said Vara proudly. She added, “On arrival we had mixed feelings. There was that excitement of taking part in a national competition in Gauteng, and the fear of having to face a tough competition from the best choirs in the country. The KwaZulu-Natal choir sang well, but my little angels were focused. They told me not to worry.” According to Vara, one of the adjudicators commented about her children’s age and understanding of a foreign song and said he wished they could join a musical theatre.
“We are very proud of what Ms Vara has done, taking our children from nothing and making them the champions of music in the country,” said Imbasa principal Phopho Mayekiso. According to Mayekiso, Vara brings a sparklight in an area otherwise doomed with unemployment, poverty, crime and drugs. SGB Deputy Chairperson Anele Ramabele said that wherever they come from, children have dreams. With this kind of nurturing and support, he was certain that their future would be bright. “As parents, we are very happy!” he said.
