Tshwete was speaking yesterday at the launch of the Nelson Mandela Bay bucket eradication programme at Khayamnandi townships in Despatch. Tshwete, who was accompanied by various municipal councillors and executives, said they agreed with the Minister of Water and Sanitation to prioritise the Metro.
She said the municipality had already built 470 communal ablutions in the month of February alone as part of the 670 they intend to build in the first phase. The second phase will consist of 206 ablutions, phase three will consist of 1 013 and phase four will have 1 023 ablutions built around the Metro within the year. The Municipality said their programme would entail a three- pronged approach that
would in total cost approximately R500 million over three to four years. “The first phase is a communal ablution facility phase that will be erected in densely populated informal settlements. The next phase is the construction of house slabs, with a closed flushing ablution facility while the beneficiary is waiting for the housing subsidy to be approved. Continued on page 3
