Rugby test fever mounts Rugby fever is hotting up in the Friendly City for the test between South Africa and Scotland this Saturday in the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium. Both teams arrived in the city on Sunday for the match which is the last in the Castle Lager Incoming series. Receiving an especially warm welcome in his home town was former Grey High pupil Siya Kolisi. He made his full Springbok debut against Scotland in Nelspruit in June last year at the age of 22. He is a firm favourite to be included in the Springbok team for the clash which will be announced today at 12pm. Tickets for the match vary from R75 to R450 and are available from Computicket. Loyiso, KwaZakhele High clash in rugby revival LASHEIGH LUCAS

T

HE great sporting rivalry in the past between Loyiso High School and KwaZakhele High School will be revived when they take each other on in the first township schools derby day “Mother of All Schools Derby” at the Dan Qeqe Stadium on Friday, June 27. This is part of a project to promote rugby in the townships. This project is the only one of its kind in the country, said MD Bantwini Matika

from Sports Revolution. The project is, as its slogan states, laying the “foundation today for the 2019 Rugby World Cup”. The event is sponsored by Willem Oliphant, MD and owner of GAP Management and president of the Despatch Rugby Club. They work in association with Sports Revolution to revive rugby in the townships. “It is recognized that rugby and recreation can play a significant role in neighbourhood renewal and that rugby can be particularly effective in addressing disaffection among young people,” said Matika.

What makes the clash between Loyiso High and KwaZakhele high even more excting is that the schools, which were among the first to be established in Port Elizabeth townships are old rivals on the sport field. “When they played in those days everything came to a standstill,” said Matika. With the sponsorship of GAP management all the team members will receive new jerseys on the derby day. A first aid team will also be present. According to Matika, the day will be all about the promotion of rugby and the purpose of the

initiative is to increase quality rugby opportunities for township school learners. “As part of the project, physical education at the schools will be effectively linked with local community clubs, sports facilities and development programmes in disadvantaged areas,” said Matika. Team members will also receive quality training from the Despatch Training Club. School Governing Board members, principals, teachers, learners, parents, community members and VIP guests from both schools will be attending the sports day on Friday.

One day I was cleaning my yard, when I felt a sharp pain in my spinal cord. The doctors diagnosed me with stress, arthritis and tonsillitis. It was very painful. I heard people talking about Gotha Products on the radio and early the next morning I took a taxi to a Gotha shop in the Pick n Pay centre. I bought a Twin Pack and Aloe Spray. I used the products and after just two weeks I could see the improvement. Then my husband passed away and I didn't have enough money to buy the products. It was a very stressful time, but then I bought the HerbalTea blend and the stress was gone. Forward Gotha! Forward.

Kuli Roberts in Tweeter madness over magical Bay REPORTER POPULAR radio presenter and journalist, Kuli Roberts was hosted in the Bay on a “Sho’t Left” visit at the end of May and had social networks abuzz about activities and sites in and around Nelson Mandela Bay. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) CEO, Mandlakazi Skefile, said that in a time when social media are a highly effective marketing tool it is important that they find a channel through which to reach relevant target audiences. “Therefore we warmly welcomed Ms Roberts who was able to share and showcase the destination through first-hand experiences relevant to her followers.” “Sho’t Left” is a domestic campaign by SA Tourism that aims to promote a culture of local holiday travel, targeting ordinary South Africans and their families who have a desire to see more of the country but don’t know where to go even if it is just for a short breakaway. The campaign is aimed at young upcoming individuals, independent couples and families, with research into the domestic tourism market indicating that over 5-million South Africans have both the resources and the desire to travel.

Together with industry stakeholders the Sho’t Left campaign included a luxurious hotel stay, what to do in and around the city, Route 67 and The Donkin as well as a trip Tsitsikamma National Park to name a few. “These activities and Roberts’s interpretation of them were all captured by Bay TV adding additional value and mileage to marketing Nelson Mandela Bay as the ideal place to visit. Keep a look out for when the programs will air on channel 260,” added Skefile. Roberts, originally born in Uitenhage, shared many tweets during her stay, such as “Port Elizabeth you are beautiful and I’m grateful for the awesome hospitality. I love your people and U”. Roberts said she was amazed at the cleanliness of the city, friendliness of the people and the relaxed atmosphere experienced; therefore she shared this and more with over two hundred thousand Twitter followers. One of her Twitter followers @slindelez tweeted “@kuliroberts u’ve definitely sold dis place 2 me. I plan 2 do more research so i can go der 4 my next shotleft.” For events and destination information visit www.cnmt.co.za or follow twitter @Nmandelabay or Facebook on www.facebook.com/nelsonmandelabay.

Young PE entrepreneurs design solutions for Africa REPORTER IMAGINE a tablet PC that can operate without electricity, running on full power even through power outages, a device that will be an answer to help residents in areas that have intermittent access to electricity. You no longer have to imagine as two Port Elizabeth entrepreneurs have come up with an answer – the Millbug Vuya Tablet PC, a solar powered tablet PC that will help users with no electricity. Sabelo Sibanda (30) and Thulilsile Volwana (22), from Walmer, who are part of the Shanduka Black Umbrellas, conceived the tablet through their company, Millbug (Pty) Ltd. According to them, the tablet will retail for no more than R1499.99 to ensure that it is within reach of its intended users. Millbug, which concentrates on technolo-

gy hardware and web development, believes that the Vuya Tablet PC will allow for greater participation of Africans in the digital economy. Less than one percent of content online is created by Africans, they say, and this alarming statistic needs urgent attention. “Instead of celebrating the rise of the African consumer, this device seeks to catalyse the rise of the African producer,” said Sibinda. Volwana is an Economics graduate at NMMU and Sabelo Sibanda is an MBA student at the Edinburgh Business School at Heriot-Watt University in Scotland. Sibanda said Millbug was registered in April 2012 and it came about through a chance meeting with Fred Roed, of World Wide Creative. He made them aware of the opportunities in technology and, more specifically, the vast opportunities in South Africa. The Vuya Tablet PC is described as “a rugged, yet aesthetically pleasing tablet that effortlessly runs on the Android 4.4 KitKat operating system.” “Vuya means ‘be happy’ in isiXhosa and it is the intention of the Millbug Vuya Tablet to bring happiness to those that need it the most. For this reason,

5

this tablet has a 1.2 GHz processor, 512 MB of RAM, 4 GB of storage a photovoltaic (solar) power source as well as the ability to be charged using USB or a conventional power outlet,’ said Sibanda. Volwana and Sibanda joined the Shanduka Black Umbrellas incubation programme which helps budding entrepreneurs and small businesses because it offered a firm like

theirs unprecedented opportunities to make a contribution to society. Sibanda and Volwana said they see their business becoming the leading mobile solutions company in Africa by 2020 – and this is their goal. Asked how their company differed from others in the field, they said, “Besides constant innovation through our practices as a learning organisation, we believe that mobile has changed the face of Africa and it is now the time for Africa to change the face of mobile,” Volwana said.

Local artist takes music world by storm

A BUDDING songstress from Veeplaas is making waves in the music industry with her new single “Amaqhawe”, which she says celebrates the country’s 20 years of freedom and the heroes that changed the country. Pamela Jikwa affectionately known as Pam, said she will be releasing her debut album “Amasi” soon. She has already shot three music videos and performed in the United Kingdom at WOMEX (World Music Expo). Pam said she wrote her single “Amaqhawe” as an expression of her emotions and seeing the celebrations of 20 years of freedom. “I asked myself ‘how can I express myself or

what do I remember in the past?’ All I could think of was the heroes who contributed to our freedom and I decided to write a song about them. People forget easily and this song is my way of reminding them where we come from,’ she said. Pam, who attended school at Kwama- gxaki High School and participated in the school and church choir, started singing professionally while part of a group called “Isaphetha” which she said was popular in the province years ago. “I then joined Take Note as a lead vocalist. With all these groups I travelled places and performed all over the country sharing stages with

big names. I grew fast and decided to go solo and record this album,” she said. On her new album, which she said has a mix of Afro soul, Jazz, traditional and R&B, Pam worked with producers Mlamli Nganase and Siya Somthunzi. For her local fans who are eager to see her perform, Pam said she is waiting for confirmation to perform at the eBubeleni Festival. She will also be performing in August aroung Gauteng in a series of events. For her single, sms Amaqhawe to 48776 or for bookings send an email to sakhele@gmail.com or call 00743000686. – LIZEKA TANDWA

Proteas clash at student championships in PE Premier league.” Le Roux said the 12 universities would play each other in a round-robin format, with the bottom two Super teams then playing off against the top two Premier sides to determine the top eight overall. The host team has yet to earn its maiden victory in the competition but will receive highlevel guidance from assistant coach and South Africa’s most-capped player Zanele Mdodana. Le Roux said the odds-on favourites for the title would be defending champions Kovsies (University of the Free State), with strong challenges from the likes of Tuks (University of Pretoria) and Pukke (North-West University). “The Proteas are fresh from a three-match test series against Scotland in Cape Town, so the public can look forward to some fantastic netballing performances.” SPAR Eastern Cape advertising and promotions manager Wendy Westraadt said the retailer was proud to be involved with another top-flight netball tournament after assisting with the international Diamond Challenge and Tri-Nations series in the metro late last year. “We are committed to the development of women’s sport and we’re pleased to play a supporting role in netball at both a local and national level.” SPAR Madibaz squad: Arne Rust (c), Kara Willemse, Eileen van Zyl, Bavu Matyumza, Nandipha Jack, Siphokazi Mapakati, Natasja Fox, Danielle Hofsetter, Nobu Phuza, Hlumisa Sithonga and Zanele Vimbela. THE majority of the SPAR Proteas netball team will be in action when the players turn out for their respective institutions at the national university championships in Port Elizabeth later this month. NMMU will play host to the University Sport South Africa (Ussa) tournament, which will see 36 teams from 34 universities doing battle between June 30 and July 4. The South Campus indoor courts in Summerstrand will be the venue for the A-section games, while the pool B and C games will take place on the North Campus courts. SPAR Madibaz netball manager Theresa le Roux said the A section would be hotly contested as the top eight teams would qualify for a spot in this year’s edition of the televised Varsity Netball competition. “The top six teams in this section form the Super league, while the bottom half constitute the

2014 Masidlale Soccer League champions crowned

REPORTER AS soccer fever is running high with the 2014 FIFA World Cup, local junior soccer stars battled it out for the 2014 Spur Masidlale Soccer League winning trophy in Port Elizabeth recently. Ten boys’ and girls’ teams gave it their all during the final playoffs at the NU2 Stadium in Motherwell following an action packed series of exciting soccer. Organisers said Empumalanga boys’ team showed they were true champions finishing convincingly first with 21 points, followed by Imbasa with 16 points and and Mboniselo in third place with 14 points. The girls team from Mboniselo however

clinched the top spot with 18 points, followed by Melisizwe second with 16 points and Enkwenkwezini in a close third with 15 points. Teachers, local coaches and players participated in a nine-week series during which ten schools entered their top teams with kids aged between nine and 13 years. Each team comprised seven players with three substitutes. Three points were awarded for a win and two points for a draw, while a loss received zero points. The boys’ and girls’ teams finishing top of the log will win a special Spur lunch and PSL mascot experience. According to Khakhi Diala of the Spur Group, the programme is currently recognised as one of the leading youth soccer development initiatives in the country. “We started with 12 one-day coaching clin-

ics in 2005, but the league has grown steadily and has highlighted the huge need for initiatives that provide a platform for youth development. Although numbers are limited to 200 participants per region, we have managed to drastically improve the level of skills training for both coaches and learners,” said Diala. Diala further emphasised that the most rewarding aspect of this corporate investment initiative was that it gave the group the opportunity to change lives. “Soccer is just the tool we’re using. Our goal is to empower both the coaches and the kids with important life skills, which will equip them to be role models in their communities long after the Spur Masidlale league comes to a close,” stated Diala.

The life skills training for the coaches was facilitated by Macsteel Maestros Life Skills and specifically targeted areas that will increase players’ self-confidence and self-esteem, while promoting positive behavioural shifts. This will enable players to cope better with matters at home, in their football lives, and equip them with better decision-making skills. “Spur Steak Ranches is truly invested in our youth and apart from the Masidlale Soccer League, support a number of youth sport development projects that promote a healthy, active, outdoor lifestyle, including the Spur School Mountain Bike League, Spur Adventure Series, Spur Ironkids Aquathlon, Junior Argus and several other events,”concluded Diala.

Mnguni increased his goal tally to two after he received a top-class pass from Siyabonga Mbizela. The final score ended 4-0 in favour of Angavu Stars when Zukile Malizana banged in his side’s last goal in the last minute of the game. This despite Motherwell being 10-14 down at one point in the tightly fought match. Oostelikes outside centre AJ Roman kicked three quick penalties to put his side 9-0 ahead. United decreased the deficit to 9-7 with a try scored by Anathi Ndoda whose conversion was successfully taken by Soma Kobese. Oostelikes left-wing Embrose Fillis scored

their first unconverted try to take the score to 14-7. United were awarded a penalty which Kobese kicked through the poles once again to reduce the deficit to 14-10. Both sides went to break with the visitors leading with four points. In the second-half United came out smoking and their hardworking lock-forward Sithembiso Sigutya scored their second try which stole the lead from Oostelikes with a score of 15-14. The homeside’s supporters were over the moon when their outside centre Mhlangabezi Menjeni scored a converted try by Andile Rhune to take his side 22-14 in front. Oostelikes made matters worse for the hosts as they piled on more pressure. More mistakes were committed by United’s forwards resulting in a penalty which AJ Roman kicked successfully to make the final score 22-17. Home supporters heaved a sigh of relief when referee Ampie Swart ended the game. Oostelikes PRO George Potgieter commended United and his youthful side who had a good run. In the reserve sides section both teams played to a15- all draw.
