cial police spokesperson Brigadier Marinda Mills. She added that the engagement with representatives from foreign national structures, local authorities, community structures, CPFs and other role-players would continue. According to Brig. Mills focus would be put on sensitising the public through awareness campaigns at schools and community centres. Brig. Mills commended members of the community who assisted the police to arrest three men for looting and stealing a fridge from a Somali spaza shop in Kwazakhele last week. “We are happy that things are getting back to normal. We want order in our communities,” said Idamasa president Bishop Sandile Jika. He said, “This experience of the past week must also warn us never to use the gun to solve problems. And, that poverty causes a lot of anger among people especially the youth. These things must be addressed.”

This started after an alleged fatal shooting of a customer by a Somali shop owner in Yaya Street in New Brighton, allegedly after an argument about airtime the customer bought. The Somali was arrested but later released owing to lack of evidence. Local leaders from all spheres of life including the SAPS, CPF and the Church met the Somali National Association, the United Nations High Commissioner for Refugees (UNHCR) and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Councillors and Disaster Management officials at the Jarman Hall in Korsten on Thursday to call the city to order. “Several spaza shops re-opened for business on Thursday and Friday,” said provin-

Retiring principal says he still has a lot to learn NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED Siyaphambili Primary School principal Gcinumzi Nqweni of Motherwell, will use the time he now has available to catch up with his passion, Information Technology (IT), because, at the ripe age of 65 years, he says he still has a lot to learn. Nqweni said this during his farewell function held at the NU2 Motherwell Community Hall last Wednesday after 26 years

as the head of Siyaphambili, the first Junior Secondary School that was built in Motherwell during the turbulent 1980s. The event was attended by members of his family, including his wife Dr Zinziswa Nqweni, current headmaster Thamsanqa Matutu, school management, members of staff, members of the SGB, parents, Education Department officials as well as enthusiastic past and present pupils. Also among the invited guests were Nqweni’s colleague and former Graaff-Reinett Education District Director Elliot Ka-

ni, EDO Chris Muller and SADTU representative Bukiwe Ralane. Nqweni who is armed with BA (Unisa) and BEd (Fort Hare) was described as a dedicated teacher who enjoyed bettering the lives of black children who mainly came from disadvantaged backgrounds. According to Nozipho Buyambo, a Deputy Principal at the school, Nqweni steered the ship during hard times in Motherwell during the 1980s and can pride himself on having produced medical doctors, engineers and chief education specialists.

“On the first day of schooling, he would tell us: Unyak’ uphelile (It’s the year end) and that would encourage us to study hard,” said pupil Naledi Gulwa. Buyambo added that books and stationery would be issued on the first day and that Nqweni ensured pupils wrote something. “It was hard in our time because of apartheid. But today we want our children to be educated,” said former Biology teacher Nqweni whose three children are all university graduates and in positions of authority in companies around the country.

‘There’s hope for SA’s education’ says retired district head NCEBA DLADLA RETIRED head master and Department of Education District Director, Elliot Kani, believes Outcomes Based Education (OBE) was a failed attempt at improving education in this country. Speaking at the farewell function of former colleague and Siyaphambili Public Primary School principal Gcinumzi Nqweni, Kani said the OBE Curriculum, which was brought about in education in 1996, fitted former Model C schools better because of a better pupil-teacher ratio. Kani, who is a former principal at Loyiso High School in Zwide and Graaff Reinet District head, said former Model C schools had resources and fewer pupils in a class which made it easy for teachers to engage with it, unlike in township schools where a teacher would face up to

70 pupils in one class. The introduction of Revised Curriculum Statements, otherwise known as RCS, in 2000 brought hope, according to Kani. This brought about new terminology and less assessment and paper-work for teachers something that could enable teachers to have more contact teaching time. In 2011 South Africa returned back to teaching subjects instead of Learning Areas (LAs) and the subjects were also dropped to six instead of the nine LAs. Kani said Caps was introduced in 2011 without training teachers but it was in the Annual National Assessment (ANA) that he thought something positive is going to come out of the education system. “This ANA must be followed to the letter in order for it to provide our pupils with improved, quality education where the three Rs, i.e. Reading, Writing and Arithmetic takes place,” said Kani.

Wildlife Society donates trees and tools to ecoschools SELBY MADIKANE THE Wildlife and Environment Society of SA (WESSA) concluded Arbor Week by donating trees and garden tools to its eco-schools at a function held at Enkwenkwezini in Motherwell NU 2 last Wednesday. Eco-Schools that attended the function were Imbasa, Enqileni, Mboniselo and Enkwenkwezini Primary Schools. Among the distinguished guests were Department of Agriculture, Fishing and Forestry officer Msingathi Nkontso (Bhisho government) as well as WESSA representatives Pearl Jonas and

Xabiso Stemele. Nkontso explained the importance of planting trees to the learners and the history of arbor week. He encouraged the schools to embark on tree planting campaigns. “The theme for this year’s arbor week (which was held from September 1 to 7) is ‘Our forests - our future’ and the three trees chosen are the Powder-puff tree (Barring tonia racemosa), the Cross-berry (Grewia occident tallis L) and the Blossom-tree (Virgilia oroboides),” said Nkontso. WESSA donated trees and garden tools to the schools while Nkontso and Stemele showed the learners how to plant trees.

Successful karate champs held at Coega Village NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay held a very successful National Kyoshi Championships at the Coega Village Indoor Sports Centre from Friday to Saturday last week.

Johnson prefers the old, traditional karate style to the modern day version. This winners will participate in a competition to be held in Vanderbijl Park in Johannesburg, Gauteng on October 24 for the selection of the team to take part in international championships. Johnson has been involved in karate for over 50 years now, most of which has been spent teaching. According to him, the sport is all about descipline, healthy living, respect and a life of friendship more than the trophies and the medals that winners take home as prizes

More that 350 participants coming from almost all the provinces of South Africa took part in the Kata, Kumite and Weapons competition. “But we’ve had less entries this year compared to other years probably because of the economic downturn,” said Shorin-ryu Shorinkan South Africa president Claude Johnson. The 8th Dan Johnson, who has just returned from a twoweek visit to Okinawa, Japan before the national championships, was overjoyed by the current standard of South African karate. Johnson sits on the world body of all Okinawa karate in the world. It is in Okinawa where this sport originated. Johnson said that meeting the karate masters who taught him the old traditional way of the game was overwhelming. He added, “And, it is also good to know that in South Africa we Coming in the first position is Sidima Spamba of PE flanked are very competitive according by second from left, Daniel Ho and third Ryan Alkaster of to old karate standards.” the Western Cape. Fina said that the history made by the four boys and two girls of Lads should not vanish but instead “our region should be proud thereof.” Coach Zolani Matiwane unpacked the road travelled by City Lads to win the national trophy. Cllr Magopeni stressed that the road to success was not easy but the metro’s young citizens and their team officials could take the honours for their success. Magopeni said, “ On behalf of Oom Ben Fihla, I would like to say to Lads : The sky is the limit. “We are immensely proud of your achievement. We are going to partner and assist your preparations for Brazil. We, as the municipality, are going to rally behind the team until you go to Brazil in 2014 .”
