Omelela (9) the honorary firefighter
Not many little boys get the opportunity to be a firefighter for the day. Little Omelela Fongqo (9), who suffers from a lifethreatening illness, had his dream of being a firefighter realised with the Reach For A Dream foundation last week. HE Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality’s service provider appointed to deal with cable theft and electricity losses, Amat, said since their launch in July they have not been able to implement their strate-
gy on cable theft reduction owing to a “bottle neck” in the municipality.
This is while cable theft and subsequent power outages are continuing to be a huge problem for businesses and manufacturers in the metro. According to a recent Metro Minutes report, Ford’s PE engine plant had suf-
fered 90 power outages in the past 12 months, resulting in a loss of revenue. Amat’s CEO, Mthu Ntlangani, said they had, however, since the launch of the project, made inroads in combating and reducing electricity theft, but not cable theft. To combat electricity theft, Amat has deployed its field audit team in various suburbs

testing electricity meters both domestic and business. “However owing to the bottle neck within the municipality, this leg of the project (to combat cable theft) has not taken off as yet. It is really unfortunate that business has to suffer losses due to cable theft,” Ntlangani said.

Outages hit businesses hard Continued from page 1 According to Ntlangani, the proposals to combat cable theft that they had submitted and were approved by the municipality with Amat’s appointment, are now stuck owing to red tape in the Electricity and Energy department. “Criminals wait for no red tape. They continue stealing the cables regardless of the red tape,” he said Kevin Hustler, CEO Of the Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber, said on Monday businesess’ trust in South Africa’s power utility is steadily and rapidly eroding, especially in the face of the power emergency declared by Eskom. He added that large industrial users in South Africa have been warned to reduce their consumption by up to 10% to ease pressure on the national grid.
A concerned Hustler said the quality and reliability of power and electricity infrastructure is a major cause of instability for business in Nelson Mandela Bay. “The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber has, over the last three years in particular, had ongoing engagements with the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro centred on the high electricity tariffs in our region, and failing infrastructure including substation flare-ups and collapse, as well as general maintenance and upgrades to the overall electricity infrastructure and grid.” Ford President, Jeff Nemeth, told Metro Minutes their local plant had significant issues due to power outages. Nemeth said the local plant operates as a manufacturing operation using high-speed equipment that required a specific shut-down process. “If this shutdown process were not followed, and the power went out, even for five or ten min-
are currently attempting to meet festive season demand. How are our exporters to meet demand for their products when their ability to produce and deliver to order is so severely compromised?” Hustler said although many businesses have contingency plans in place for periods of load shedding including the use of a UPS (Uninterruptable Power Supply) and generators, businesses running 24/7 manufacturing lines suffer significant wastage. “Unscheduled stoppages and disruptions in power supply can cost large companies and manufacturers millions of rands per day, and electricity disruptions have the potential to threaten the very existence of large and small businesses alike.” ) No comment could be obtained from the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality at the time of going to print.
utes, technicians thereafter had to repair the equipment affected by the outage, adding that repair and spares costs were also high. “How can my operation be globally competitive, especially as it is exporting to 150 countries? If I don’t have a competitive product at a competitive cost level, then I won’t sell my vehicles. I’ll lose production and jobs here in South Africa,” he said. Nemeth said they were now discussing alternative energy as power was a problem in PE. Hustler said businesses in the metro had suffered significant and serious employment losses, particularly the high energy users, who have shed over 950 jobs in the last three years alone. “Without a steady and reliable supply of electricity, this number may very well climb. “To demand that business reduce consumption by a further 10% places unacceptable pressure on those in the manufacturing sector, who
Omelela (9) becomes an honorary firefighter ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL MANY little boys dream of becoming a firefighter. One special little boy, however, got to realise his dream at the age of 9 - even if it was just for a day. Little Omelela Fongqo’s biggest dream was to be a firefighter and drive in a fire engine. Omelela (9), suffers from a life-threatening illness, and through the Reach For A Dream organisation his dream became a reality at the South End Fire Station last week. Not only did he get to drive in a fire engine,
he also had the opportunity to handle a high pressure hose, and he was allowed to help extinguish a small oil pan fire with a dry chemical extinguisher. He and his two best friends were also treated to experience being in an aerial appliance (cage) which was lifted high above the fire engine - all under the watchful eye of Leading Firefighter Lindile Makina. An overwhelmed Omelela couldn’t find the words to describe his feelings but his excited smile and bright eyes spoke volumes. While driving in the fire engine around the fire station’s premises he excitedly let the siren off several times with many giggles in be-
Premier and executive visit Bay today REPORTER THE Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality will be hosting the Eastern Cape Premier, Phumulo Masuale, and his Executive on a two-day EXCO Outreach visit starting today (Wednesday). This visit forms part of the Executive’s programme for the 16 Days of Activism on No Violence Against Women and Children, which is starting today. The visit also forms part of the Inter-governmental relations and cooperation programme between the Provincial government and the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality. During this two-day visit, the Premier and his Executive are expected to hold a closed session meeting with the Executive Mayor of Nelson Mandela Bay, Councillor Benson Fihla and the Mayoral Committee delegation. At this session, issues ranging from major infrastructural projects to general institutional support will be discussed. Electricity and water sustainability will also be focal discussion areas. The delegation is expected to visit the homes of local victims of violence against women and children.
tween. André de Ridder, Senior Director/Fire and Emergency Services, said he and his team thoroughly enjoyed seeing the absolute joy on Omelela’s face. “We were approached by Reach For A Dream to host Omelela and we did this with great pleasure. “I am well aware that the heart’s desire of many young boys is to be a firefighter and it was only a privilege to help fulfil Omelela’s dream,” De Ridder said. After all the fun in the Fire Station’s backyard, Omelela and his friends were treated to lunch with senior Fire and Emergency
Services officers, where he was awarded an honorary firefighter’s certificate and badge. Thereafter the boys were taken to the Boardwalk Entertainment Centre for some more fun and games to end the day. Omelela’s uncle, Sindile Gqamlana, who had accompanied him on the surprise outing, said it came also as an early birthday present for Omelela, who turns 10 on December 8. ) See a video and photo gallery of Omelela’s special day on www.pe-express.co.za

High speed internet boost for Baywest City development REPORTER DEVELOPERS of the R1.7bn Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs have signed a landmark deal with Vodacom signalling a watershed moment in the development of “smart cities” throughout the country. The deal will see Vodacom light the entire high speed fibre optic backbone of the 320 hectare Baywest City development, providing high speed internet to Baywest Mall tenants and shoppers alike. By lighting the network, Vodacom will be providing the data to end users using Baywest’s fibre optic infrastructure. Baywest is the first large scale “green fields” development in the country to incorporate a wholly functional fibre optic backbone from inception. A development spanning the next decade, Baywest City includes commercial and retail offerings, as

well as residential nodes with a private school and hospital in a model similar to Cape Town’s Century City development. Baywest Mall, which opens in April next year, is the catalyst for the entire project. Baywest MD Gavin Blows said the deal paved the way for Baywest City to become an interconnected “smart city”. It meant homes and businesses within the Baywest precinct could be connected to fast, reliable internet, and better managing security systems while allowing for the technological development of homes and businesses to progress by leaps and bounds, he said. “It will be a smart city with fibre optics throughout, allowing for high speed internet access. The security and internet access will run off this fibre optic backbone,” said Blows. “The new model of city development needs to have the latest technology.” For tenants of the mall it meant

having ground breaking technology at their fingertips. “The fibre optic network also allows for free calls within the precinct, reduced call rates, easy cloud computing, and live gaming without any lag, among a host of other advantages,” said Blows. “We no longer have to talk about what it means to live in a smart city – we are building one,” said Blows. “Having a high speed fibre optic backbone lit by South Africa’s biggest cellular provider fits well with our slogan: ‘Expect Big Things’.” Carol Hall, Managing Executive (Vodacom Eastern Region) said that in September they launched fibre-to-the-business services in South Africa. “Baywest is a flagship partnership for Vodacom FTTB (fibre-to-the-business) in the Eastern Cape, which we hope will be the first of many installations bringing world-class business connectivity to the region,” Hall said. With just over 1 600 workers currently working on the mall, Blows said tenant installations were on track to start from December. Also on track was the R300m Baywest road network, connecting the mall to the nearby N2 freeway via a series of onramps and off-ramps. The first phase of the network, connecting Walker Drive with the mall and the freeway, is scheduled for completion in March next year, with the link to Cape Road in Bridgemeade/Rowallan Park set for opening next September, he said.

Jikeleza driver murdered by men pretending to be commuters NCEBA DLADLA A KWANOBUHLE Jikeleza taxi driver was shot dead and robbed on Friday evening by two assailants who allegedly pretended to be commuters. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Basil Seekoei, the 24 year old driver picked up two suspects on the way to town. The suspects asked the driver to stop the vehicle just after passing the bridge in Melbrooks.
“He stopped the vehicle and one suspect pulled a firearm and shot the driver in his upper-body. He died on the scene,” said W/O Seekoei. The suspects fled with the vehicle. “Police are investigating a case of murder and car hijacking,” said Seekoei. At time of going to print no arrests have yet been made. Seekoei urged members of the public who might have information on the incident to please contact their nearest police station and report the matter. “Otherwise, people with information can
phone the toll-free 086 10111 line,” said W/O Seekoei. . In a separate incident three people died when their vehicle collided with a truck on the N2 last Thursday just before 1pm. The truck was on its way to Humansdorp, while the vehicle, a VW Polo was on its way in the direction of Port Elizabeth. According to police reports, the Polo tried to swerve and landed in the oncoming traffic and collided with the truck. “The driver of the truck jumped out in order
to rescue the occupants of the Polo vehicle but realised that the vehicle was on fire,” said W/O Basil Seekoei. The truck driver jumped back into the truck and fetched the fire-extinguisher which he used to extinguish the fire. The three occupants in the Polo had died on impact, according to the police spokesperson. The deceased were Michael and Michele Murray of Humansdorp and Anell Bruin-tjies of Jeffrey’s Bay. A case of culpable homicide was under investigation, said W/O Seekoei.

“This is not the first attempt to establish a Sector Crime Forum in the area. We have also contacted security companies responsible for the security in this area and we the SAPS should work together with the businesses in the area to address the crime challenges we are facing,” she said. beries. We are also warning people walking to and from work mainly in the Deal Party area, to be more cautious. We have an active Sector Manager that is responsible for the Deal Party area and Crime Prevention strategies are in place to address the crime within the area,” said Janse van Renburg. Women’s Manyano invited to prayer meeting NCEBA DLADLA NELSON Mandela Bay church Women’s Manyano and caring citizens are invited to a prayer meeting on Friday November 27 to be held in honour of the family of a 2-year old toddler who was raped and murdered by a 16year old youth in Soweto-on-Sea recently. The rape and killing of the toddler by the youth who was arrested by the police has been described as horrendous by Nelson Mandela Bay residents. The prayer-meeting, organized by Kwazakhele police, members of the Community Police Forum (CPF) and the church fraternity will be held from 10am at the corner of Serothe and Zinyanya Streets in Soweto-on-Sea
where the evil act is believed to have happened. According to Rev. Dr Xolani Tengo, ministers of religion from all church denominations were expected to come and take part in the service aimed at bringing hope to the distressed. Kwazakhele CPF Chairperson Mawethu Poni told PE Express Indaba previously that communities had planned meetings to talk about the recent spate of crime that was disorganizing families and causing fear among local residents. “We also took time to talk to the learners in the local primary schools and warned them against taking part in criminal activities,” said Poni. The prayer meeting starts at 10am.

Family Friendly Stand-Up Comedy Fest REPORTER PORT Elizabeth is about to play host to the inaugural “Laugh It Up” Comedy Festival set to take place on November 28. The festival which has no age restriction is an idea which came from community radio Station KingfisherFM. General Manager Alan Ahlfeldt said that comedy was a natural fit with the station’s focus on positivity. “Our goal is to bring hope and inspiration to Nelson Mandela Bay. What’s more uplifting than a good laugh?” “In this economic climate it’s difficult to attend expensive entertainment events as a family, even with just two children. We wanted to make this event accessible to families, so we have made the ticket price affordable and will be granting free entry for kids under 13. The content will be good clean fun. That in itself is unique for live comedy these
days,” said Ahlfeldt. The show will be headlined by Comedian and TV Personality Roland Gaspar, whose face will be familiar to many as the Makro Man from the ‘Living in Store’ ad campaign or the MiWay Guy from that company’s Insurance Infomercials. Gaspar has been working with KingfisherFM since May this year with the goal of refining the on-air product and building listenership. The show also features Comedienne Lindzy Msimang from Johannesburg, winner of the 2011 Nando’s Comedy Showdown. Third on the line-up is local new talent Francois Scholtz, who was last year’s CocaCola East Cape Comedy Collective new Comedy talent search winner. The show will take place at the auditorium of Father’s House Church at 30 Patterson Road in North End at 7.30pm, and tickets are available from KingfisherFM 041 368 9740 and the church.
You can vote as many times as you like. Voting closes on Friday, December 5 at 3pm. The baby with the most SMS votes will be the PE Express Indaba Christmas Baby for 2014. The Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas. The winner of the competition will be rephotographed and MUST be available from December 8-12 for the photo session. ) For more information, contact Tanya van Zyl at tanya.vanzyl@media24.com or phone her at 041 503 6059.

Chippa United faces Free State Stars in Absa Premiership match NCEBA DLADLA CHIPPA United will be coming out with guns blazing when they face Free State Stars in the Absa Premiership match at the Nelson Mandela Bay stadium tonight. This is the view of the Chilli Boy’s Marketing and Communications Manager Putco Mafani. According to Mafani, after losing 1-0 to Bloemfontein Celtics away in the weekend, United will be unstoppable at home.
A late goal by Phunya Selesele’s Lerato Lamola in 82 minutes sank the local team and thus thwarted the plans of being unbeaten in seven matches since the takeover of Roger Sikhakhane as the coach, following the depature of head coach Kosta Papic in September. This was the first loss for Sikhakhane who counted Moroka Swallows and Orlando Pirates among his victims, with the defending Absa Premiership League champions Mamelodi Sundowns settling for a 1-1 draw. “We were unlucky not to score against
Celtics. Free State Stars will, however, not be so lucky. “They will suffer the consequences of what happened in the Free State at the weekend, because they all come from the Free State Province,” joked Mafani, adding that the mood in the camp was high and that all players were ready for the game which he hoped would put the Chilli Boys back at the top of the log. “We urge Eastern Cape football followers to come in droves to the stadium. They must come and sing amagwijo which are celebra-
tory songs originally from the Eastern Cape,” said Mafani. Chippa United are currently standing at number seven with 17 points from 11 matches while Ea lla koto their opponents, on the other hand are at position 14 with 11 points on the league log with the same number of matches played. Before the Celtics match, the Chilli Boys were comfortably placed second on the log standings. “We want to get back to the top,” said Mafani. Kick-off is at 7pm.

SUBS come from behind to win their game SELBY MADIKANE SWARTKOPS VALLEY United Brothers (SUBS) struggled to beat Crystal Palace 2-1 being one goal down in the entire first half during a MOFA Build It Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Sunday. SUBS are the only side in MOFA Build It Premier League that has won all its games so far. Having been beaten 2-1 by Milan Stars, Palace made matters difficult in the first half. After Palace’s big striker Mlungiseleli Maradona Honi scored a long range shot from the setpiece, SUBS looked more anxious and they missed chances. In the second half SUBS were so defiant that they put their counterparts under immense pressure.
SUBS striker Yamkela Va was very offensive to the Palace defenders and was unfortunate in not having come up with a goal or two. SUBS first goal came from the header of Lelethu Nkonko after his side was awarded a corner-kick. SUBS pushed more players forward in search of an equaliser. In the dying minutes of the game the longawaited winning goal scored by Chumani Makafi brought a spark of joy to the SUBS’ players.
