Livingstone Hospital conditions shock Reverend LIZEKA TANDWA A LOCAL Reverend who had a horrific experience with the death of a family member at Livingstone Hospital, has turned to Facebook to share his shock about the conditions at the hospital. Rev. Michael Hutchinson has created the Facebook page “STOP Livingstone Hospital Medical Negligence” which has received over 730 likes in just a month since the page was created. On this Facebook page many others have also lambasted the hospital claiming that patients are turned away at will, that there are exposed used needles and bloodied medication lying around, there are incompetent staff and shortages in medical supplies. This while, in a media briefing on Friday, the MEC for Health Dr Pumza Dyantyi proudly applauded Livingstone hospital saying it was one of the province’s proudest achievements as it is now furnished with state-of-theart equipment and has medical staff to better enable service delivery. Hutchinson said he decided to create a Facebook page on July 28 to bring awareness of the problem after complaining to the Provincial Department of Health to no avail. Hutchinson’s uncle-in-law, Gary Rishworth, died after he was admitted at the casualty ward. “After sitting for 18 hours after admission in casualty, in absolute severe pain, finally they said his ulcers had burst and he needed an operation. A further 12 hours later they put him on the table to discover his intestines were failing and his stomach had blown holes in it from the ulcers. He was recorded as having died in his own stomach acid with his intestines already dead. That was 30 hours after admission. Hutchinson said while waiting for his uncle to be attended to, he was threatened by a doctor when he begged for help. “The government must fire the lot and employ dedicated staff who want to help. There was one doctor on duty during the day and then in the evening three but only one was working whilst the other two chose when to see a patient

Municipality works with the police to fight crime INDABA REPORTER GOOD work by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) in Kwazakhele have led to the arrest of 10 foreign nationals aged between 22 and 47 in the Kwazakele, Zwide and Veeplaas areas last Wednesday. This followed an operation that was conducted by the SAPS in Kwazakele and the Rapid Response Task Team from the office of the executive mayor. According to Municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki, the operation was initiated by the SAPS following an increase in crimes in the area where foreign nationals were the victims of these crimes. During the operation illegal connections to electricity were disconnected at 12 houses. A case docket has been opened for fraud as one of these foreign nationals had a fake permit. Others were expected to be deported back to their countries. Coordinator from the Rapid Response Task Team, Zonile Ndoni, from the office of the executive mayor, applauded members of the SAPS Kwazakele for inviting other government departments to join the operation. “As Municipality we are humbled by this initiative taken by the SAPS and we believe that the municipality is going to save a lot of money as some of these houses have illegal electricity connection,” said Ndoni, adding that some of the houses were also declared as zero health standard by the department of Health. Electric boxes were removed and 12 houses were also issued with compliance notices, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe.

LEFT: An open syringe and needle lying around on a counter in the hospital. MIDDLE: Diabetes tablets with what a patient claimed was blood on them also lying around in the area. RIGHT: A Livingstone hospital bed covered in blood spatter. PHOTOS:SUPPLIED or when to fool around laughing or just walk around doing nothing.” said Hutchinson. Another complainant is Jacqui H, who said her mother died after she was left unattended for six hours while suffering with pain – as the specialist who was due to attend to her was “too tired to work that day”. “I hold them personally responsible for her death as they did nothing to assist her or give her any treatment when she so desperately needed it. “When I rushed back to the hospital to my dead mother’s side they did not even take the time to remove the tubes and drips from her, let alone put a full screen around her. “The way that the morgue porters treated her was without dignity. I watched through a crack in the curtain how they just forcefully bound her hands and feet together and yanked her rings off and pulled her cross and chain off, breaking the clasp. They did not treat her body with any respect, yet just pushed and pulled until they got her into the body bag. They didn’t even give me enough time to say goodbye before they wheeled her away,” said Jacqui H. Jacqui H said she witnessed her mother being placed on a bloody bed with faeces on the curtains; blood splattered on the wall behind her, and needles and syringes lying around.

“I thought being a doctor or a nurse was a calling in life and that they wanted to help! I have lost my faith in them. Because I don’t have a medical aid must I just wait to die too when my time comes?” said Jacqui H. CEO of PE hospital complex, Dr Jacobus Kotze, said their policy of transparency and openness in their hospitals allows them to address complaints by patients and investigate claims against their hospitals. “Many people make general complaints which are at times unfounded,” said Kotze. Eastern Cape Department of Health Communications manager, Sizwe Kupelo, said the complaints made of unclean bedding and incompetent staff by patients and their family members were unfair. “We do not condone unhygienic conditions. I doubt whether any of these cases were given a chance to be investigated. While we appreciate complaints and comments by patients, people must be fair.” Kupelo said they have recognised that some of the patients with minor injuries book themselves in at Livingstone Hospital instead of clinics although the hospital is a tertiary hospital catering for specialised care. “The casualty situation which is identified by the complainants is caused by people not

utilising primary health facilities. What we must understand is that Livingstone Hospital does not only cater for the Metro but for the Cacadu districts as well. There is a gap within the Metro because there is no district hospital,” said Kupelo. Kupelo said Dyantyi had identified problems in the Metro while on her two-week visit last week and decided that the province would need to reopen the casualty unit at Provincial Hospital, open a gateway clinic at Livingstone Hospital and appoint a permanent CEO at Dora Nginza to address overcrowding in the ailing hospital. “Dora Nginza needs leadership to cope with its own problems and that of Livingston Hospital. The new MEC of Health is adamant that she will be addressing problems of cleanliness, staff attitude, availability of blood and medication in all hospitals around the province. We need to give her a chance to solve these problems,” said Kupelo. Kupelo added that they were also investigating claims against the hospital. “Patients can convey their complaints in various ways and even to the CEO of the hospital. We have also opened up a 24-hour toll-free call centre to hear allegations against hospitals and clinics,” Kupelo said.

SEVEN men from Kwazakhele were expected to appear before the Magistrate Court in New Brighton today to face charges of armed robbery and car hijacking. The seven, who are all in their 20s, were linked to a car-hijacking case that took place in Khiwane, Kwazakhele on Saturday night. Police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe said members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) Visibility Policing in Kwazakhele were on patrol around 10 pm when they saw a suspicious looking vehicle, a red Ford Lazer, with seven passengers in it at Khiwane, Kwazakhele around 9am on Sunday.

“They searched the vehicle and saw that it fitted the description of a motor-vehicle that was reported as hijacked at Mkwane Street, KwaDwesi the night before,” said W/ O Gwe. According to Gwe, it was also discovered that the seven also fitted exactly the description of the seven reported as the armed suspects that approached the driver and robbed him of his vehicle. One suspect had a gun whilst the rest were carrying knives during the hijack, according to the police spokesperson. At the time of the arrest however, the suspects did not have the weapons with them. “We did not find the gun and knives at the time of the arrest,” said Warrant Officer Gwe.

Cuban medic student shares experiences NCEBA DLADLA WHEN Sandiswa Stuurman left South Africa to study medicine in Cuba in 2012, she did not know what to expect. What kept Sandiswa (22) going in a foreign land far away from home was her earnest love for medicine - the course that would empower and enable her to heal the sick – as well as her family’s support including her mother Weziwe Stuurman’s prayers. Sandiswa of KwaNobuhle in Uitenhage is at home for the vacation as her studies at the Medical School in Santi Spiritus in Cuba are going well. “I was only allowed to come back home because I did well in the exams,” a proud Sandiswa said of her second year studies. Students who did not pass, remained behind. The lass is part of a group of South African students learning medicine in Cuba as part of a Twinning Agreement concluded in the late 1990s between former comrades and state presidents, Nelson Mandela and Fidel Castro who have left office. Faced with a shortage of doctors especially to work in the rural and peri-urban areas, South Africa was benefiting immensely from Cuba’s generosity in sharing these skills since the bilateral agreement.

There is a language barrier as Cubans speak Spanish. But Sandiswa found university life in Cuba exciting. More than anything else, she said, she was enthralled by the support students from Latin America, the US and Africa received from the authorities. The first thing that Cubans do, according to Sandiswa, is to teach foreign students Spanish. The lecturers spend time explaining to make certain that students understand. “They did this with love,” she added, “because they loved Mandela and South Africa. “You are given a second and even a third chance to write your exams while lecturers continue to give you assistance. There’s no way you can fail there,” said Sandiswa, adding that all people needed over there was the determination and desire to succeed. Since her arrival back home, there was no time for Sandiswa to socialise. Sandiswa spent time at the Letitia Bam Community Hospital where she was volunteering as an assistant. She was also comparing the Eastern Cape’s and Cuba’s Primary Healthcare Programmes and residents’ health issues. Sandiswa passed matric at VM Kwinana High School in KwaNobuhle in 2010 before she got this opportunity of a life-time to study medicine abroad. Her delighted pensioner-parents Thobile

Sandiswa and some members of her family including parents Thobile and Weziwe and her twin brother Sandile (standing on the left). PHOTO:NCEBA DLADLA and Weziwe Stuurman revealed how they thanked God for blessing them with their children and Sandiswa’s study-success. “Everything is possible with God,” said Mama Weziwe. Her father, from Amaqadi clan, said he was scared when Sandiswa first left the country.

But now he wants her to continue being the light for the country. Meanwhile, Sandiswa mourned the sudden passing of Ward Cllr Lucky Vumazonke who was influential in getting her the scholarship. She thanked her alumni and the Provincial Department of Health for the opportunity.

UK Reed’s College’s goodwill benefit PE township-schools PUPILS from WB Tshume Primary School in Kwazakhele Township could consider themselves lucky. These children from poor backgrounds in Nelson Mandela Bay are benefiting immensely from the good gesture of students and teachers from Reed’s College in the United Kingdom. This was made possible by the relationship the school has with Reed’s College which works with SA-based NPO, the Calabash Trust. The Calabash Trust assists township schools with facilities to help their pupils excel in education.

“Since their arrival in the city on August 12, Reed’s College students have assisted WB Tshume Primary School with the building of sports grounds. They also built a netball pitch as well as assisted with teaching in the classroom,” a proud principal Buyile Sali said. He added hat by doing these things, their main objective was to stop the movement of black children from township schools to former Model C schools - because of a lack of educational resources. “We want to make our schools centres of

excellence, hence we have potent relationships like these with Reed’s College. Not only did they assist our school with the planting of the trees for our permaculture, they have also made a remembrance wall which they painted beautifully,” said Sali, adding that the plan was to develop children in totality - inside and outside of the confines of the classroom. Calabash Trust’s co-founder and Director, Paul Miedema, said they bring overseas students to SA to make a difference in the impoverished communities. “We have extended the

gardens and put in water tanks so now there will be a drip irrigation system to moisten the plants,” said Miedema whose institution’s mission is to act against poverty and inequality by leveraging existing community assets and creating new capacity in and around schools. The visitors were invited to the Mayoral Gala Dinner last Wednesday where the Executive Mayor Ben Fihla and some members of his Mayoral Committee welcomed them in the friendly city and gave them minor gifts as tokens of appreciation. – NCEBA DLADLA

KwaNobuhle youth will soon be media specialists and problem solvers NCEBA DLADLA KWANOBUHLE youth who are involved with their local radio station, Radio L2k at Love Life Community Centre are training to become seriously involved in their community through citizen journalism. The young lads and lasses have joined Mediawise which is part of Vuselela Media, the NonProfitmaking Company (NPC) that according to its Website, was aimed at helping to train young South Africans, especially those from marginalised and disadvantaged communities, to understand the workings and role of the media. Radio L2K presenter Azile Maka said that through the programmes they were taught how to write, edit and produce community stories which they would flight on the community Television stations like Bay TV in Nelson Mandela Bay, Soweto TV in Jozi and KZN TV in Durban. “We work with Vuselela Media which sets us to work with the community TV stations for the airing of our final products on a different range of issues affecting members of the community,” said Maka, adding that through the pro-

gramme, they have learnt to develop the content and have seen their final products making it to television like the programme Geleze Nathi on SABC. The group have been delving on topics about serious community issues like gender-based violence, sex and sexuality, HIV/Aids and unplanned pregnancy among other programmes . According to Anelisa Matebese, a Groundbreaker, their involvement talks about highlighting and finding ways to prevent as well as fight gender-based violence wherever it rears its ugly head. “We are about teaching members of the community through the media platforms to know their rights and responsibilities. Women and children should not suffer alone but talk about the ills like violence against members of the weaker sex and free themselves from them, “ said Matebese. These young men and women told PE Express Indaba that they also provide members of the community with Public Viewing opportunities and then create opportunities for dialogues aimed at empowering communities.

Dance puts food on table NCEBA DLADLA THE future looks bright for Kwazakhele youth who decided two years ago to organise themselves and formed a non-profitmaking-organisation which would soon help them make ends meet. The Pantsula dance crew belonging to the Amazing Youth and Elderly Development Organisation from Ward 18 in Kwazakhele are invited to strut their stuff and entertain the crowds during events taking place in their community.

This is by far a positive development from the unemployed youth who were loitering in the streets with no positive contribution to make in their community. “They could have been involved in unsavoury acts including drugs and crime,” said Landezwa Luvuno, their founder and head. A teacher at Joe Slovo Primary School, Luvuno, who was initially working with the elderly who did beadworks, knitting as well as play hand ball games, was approached by the young people in her area asking that she lead them.

“They said, ‘sisi, we see that you’re working well with the elderly and thought that you could also help us develop our own talents’,” reminisced Luvuno. “We do pantsula dance, sing and act,” said the group’s Treasurer and dance instructor Mfusi Zako, adding that their mission was to unearth and nurture raw talent which was in abundance in his township. This year they performed in a Social Development Department’s function, the National Women’s Day as well as during the International 67 minutes for Mandela Campaign - all the events in Kwazakhele.

Since they started, a proud Zako added, they have seen crime rate in the area drop as many of the youth were interested in doing something good, be it sport, arts or culture. “I encourage them to take education seriously and am proud to say we’ve seen two of our group members go back to school to write matric this year,” said Luvuno. “We are also encouraged by the fact that through dance, we are able to put food on the table whilst doing something that we love,” said group organiser Yandi Sandlana.

Changing which bulbs you use, and how you use them will instantly save energy and money. Turn lights off Changing the way you live can save money and energy. Here are a few easy tips to help you start saving:

• Always turn lights off when leaving a room even if it is for a short time. • Be aware of how many lights you have on and whether they all need to be in use. • Put your light switches in easy places to access. • Use a sensor and timer on outside lights so they are in use only when they need to be. • Use the right lightings i.e. a low light while watching television and a focused or bright light for reading. Having a range of lights in a room with separate switches will make this easier.

Replace bulbs Energy Saving Lamps are more expensive than normal bulbs but in the long run you will save on your electricity bill. Could boxing benefit from working with Mixed Martial Arts under one roof?

NCEBA DLADLA

KWAZULU-Natal is on a mission to revive its boxing and a boxing extravaganza was organised at SMD Ballito last Friday August 22. The only difference in the match organised by former pugilists Francois ‘The White Buffalo’ Botha and Hardy Mileham, was that it included Mixed Martial Arts (MMA) fights. This innovation has been going on in Gauteng with BRD Boxing Promotions boss,

Manny Fernandez, featuring MMA fights in the undercard of his interesting fights. The concept has, however, not been widely seen in other areas like Nelson Mandela Bay and there has never been a boxing tournament featuring Mixed Martial Arts contests in the Eastern Cape province. While the aim of the Ballito fight night, organised by the former IBF and WBF Heavy-weight Champion Botha, was largely to promote the hosting of boxing at that venue, the fighters in the tournament put up good performances, according to the organisers.

PE Express Indaba wanted to know whether this idea of mixing boxing under one roof would work for the region. Boxing South Africa (BSA) Nelson Mandela Bay Service Provider Mthunzi Mapitiza thought it was a good idea, although he did have some reservations. “The idea sounds good. Perhaps it would work well for boxing that is currently facing a television drought since fights have not been screened for the past three years,” said Mapitiza. He added, “Mixed Martial Arts has a tremendous following which could certainly benefit boxing. But, I am not sure how the

two could take place in the same venue if we consider the fact that boxing takes place in a square ring whereas Mixed Martial Arts takes place in a six-corner cage.” Meanwhile, Nelson Mandela Bay female boxer Nomampondomise “Lily” Xotyeni will fight for the vacant South African Junior Lightweight title fight against KZN boxer Nomvula Magcaba over 10-rounds at Jeff Masemola Community Hall on Saturday, September 20, according to Mapitiza. The fight will be brought courtesy of Sibongile Nkebe’s Silindokuhle Boxing Promotions.

Pool shared points with the Rocks SELBY MADIKANE THE Northern Areas Football Association (NAFA) Premier League race will be hotting up over the weekend. During this past weekend’s matches, Blackpool experienced the difficult part of their NAFA Premier League schedule when they played to a 1-1 draw with Shamrocks who were fighting tooth and nail in their pulsating clash at Malabar on Saturday. Bloom Callies remain a forceto be reckoned with following their well-deserved 2-0 win over Wolves at Gelvan 1. Excited Stardrift’s fans saw their side col-

lecting maximum three points following their 2-1 triumph over Saints at Marock Road Fields. Glenville Celtic snatched a 4-1 away victory when they defeated Fairview Rovers at Finnis 1. Hotspurs registered a huge 6-1 away defeat when they played against the struggling Chatty United at Finnis 1. Determined Chippa is rearing to go with coach and all players registered NCEBA DLADLA AJAX Cape Town will have no place to hide when they face a full squad Chippa United at their home-base, Nelson Mandela Bay stadium this Friday. Kick-off is at 8pm. Coach Kosta Papic and his foreign-based players who have been on the sidelines since the start of their Absa Premiership campaign have finally been registered with the Home Affairs Department and the Professional Soccer League (PSL), said United PRO Lukhanyo Mzinzi yesterday (Tuesday) morning. They beat the deadline as PSL Media Liaison Luxolo September told the media last week that players who were not registered by Friday August 29, the closing of the domestic window period, would miss registration. “This is a blanket approach to all the National First Division (NFD) and PSL players,” he said when PE Express Indaba wanted to know whether that included players whose registration has reportedly been delayed by Home Affairs Department. The Chilli Boys had their coach and all

players including goal keeper Fatau Dauda, James Okwoaso and Eric Chipeta to give impetus to their campaign to the elite professional football league. They played away against Maritzburg United last night. “Everybody is registered and rearing to go and give it their best shot against Ajax (Cape Town) as there is so much rivalry between the two sides,” said Mzinzi of the teams that were both based in Cape Town with Chippa having relocated to Mandela Bay at the start of the season. Mzinzi urged football lovers to come in droves to support the local team. United opened their league account with a 2-0 win over Platinum Stars at home before they slumped to a 1-0 loss to Supersport United away in Attridgeville and a 2-1 defeat to Pretoria Unversity at home. Mzinzi said the players were upbeat and certain of victory yesterday and especially at home against Ajax. They would like to show the doubting Thomases, according to Mzinzi, that after a clean sweep victory in the NFD and a grand entrance into the PSL with a resounding victory over Dikwena, they were in the premiership division to stay.
