Residents warned about rise in house robberies NCEBA DLADLA
R
ESIDENTS in the policing area of the KwaZakhele station, are being warned about an increase in house robberies.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Thembi Gwe, police have noticed an increase in house robbery cases reported in KwaZakhele and Zwide townships in Port Elizabeth in the recent past. Without giving numbers, the police spokesperson said members of the South African Police Service would like to urge members of the public, especially in Salamntu, Qeqe and Tonjeni Streets to take precautionary measures to enable police to prevent the robberies. “We need the public’s assistance. They must make sure that they lock their gates early at night and we encourage them to invest in strong burglar doors and strong wooden doors,” said Gwe, adding that residents with sliding doors should ensure that they have burglar proofing as well. W/O Gwe urged community members, in the event of a house robbery, to report the case as quickly as possible and to make sure that they gave police as much information as possible whilst the incident was fresh and

could be followed up. Gwe said giving the police information such as a description of the clothes the suspect was wearing or what type of getaway vehicle was used, can assist police. People must ensure that they have the serial numbers of their possessions as well as IM-
EI number of their cell phones to give to the police in the event of theft. “We’d also like to know whether the suspect was armed with firearms or knives during the robberies,” said W/O Gwe. She urged community members to form neighbourhood watches and work in tandem
with the police to look after their properties. This was very important, she said. “Community members must make sure that they have the contact number of their sector managers. They should also call 10 111 to report a crime,” said W/O Gwe.

The Bay celebrates National Police Day in style NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Service in the Nelson Mandela Bay celebrated National Police Day in style on Monday. “We went out as early as 6am to meet people from different sectors to talk about crime prevention and safe living,” said Warrant Officer Gerda Swart of the Uitenhage Cluster .
According to W/O Swart, they targeted the young and old members of the community in their talks against crime. Speaking to PE Express Indaba, W/O Swart said they visited Winterberg Primary School and hosted a Puppet Show. They then went to four different old-age homes to give the elderly love and a meal consisting of fish and vegetables. They also visited the Children’s Ward at the Provincial Hospital.

There’s peace and order again in Kamesh THERE is finally peace and calm in the Kamesh area in Uitenhage following the decision by members of the South African Police Service (SAPS) to keep an eagle’s eye on the area for the whole of last week. Uitenhage police spokesperson Warrant Officer Gerda Swart told PE Express Indaba on Monday that everything was under control. She said there was, once again, order and respect for law in Kamesh. “The Uitenhage Cluster confirmed (last week Thursday) that police would continue to maintain their presence in the Kamesh area after protesters gathered along Kamesh Road and tried to reassemble informal homes
Valuables stolen at Castle Hill Museum LIZEKA TANDWA CASTLE Hill Museum is asking residents, antique pawn shops and scrap yards to be on the lookout for a valuable set of antique Hallmark silver cutlery which was stolen from the Museum in Central. No7 Castle Hill Museum curator, Grizel Hart, said they discovered the theft on Thursday morning, January 23 but suspected that the culprits had taken the silver on Tuesday. “Two rather suspicious men came into the museum and wandered around for a few minutes on Tuesday. We tried to show them the rest of the museum, but they declined. The men rushed out of the museum quickly and we did not have any visitors after them until we discovered the theft on Thursday.” Grizel said there were no signs of forced entry which she thought was a clear indication that the theft had occurred while the museum was open. A set of 6 dinner forks, 6 dessert spoons and 3 long handled silver serving spoons marked with unique museum accession numbers and embossed with the King’s shell design (and often refered to as ‘fiddle pattern’) were stolen. “Some of these items belonged to the McCleland family and form part of the history of the Castle Hill museum and the city. This is not just a loss to the museum but also to the nation as these valuables belong to the state and are on the national register,” she added. Grizel said this was the first theft in the nine years she had been working at the museum and pleaded to the culprits to return the treasured cutlery. “If there is anyone with any information about the theft, he/she must contact the Humewood Police or Castle Hill museum immediately,” she said. Grizel can be contacted at 0 041 582 2515
on a vacant land on Tuesday January 21,” said Swart. Members of the SAPS were deployed in and around the area to intensify visible policing as well as to react speedily and effectively on any situation which could occur, she said. According to W/O Swart, the police also gave a stern warning to community members to refrain from using acts of violence, lawlessness and disruptions. Members of the SAPS who carried the mandate to protect the rights of people and prevent the destruction of property and theft, would not tolerate those, said Swart. – NCEBA

“We also spent some time in the Uitenhage CBD issuing pamphlets with safety hints and important numbers to remember when faced with a criminal situation,” said Swart. In the Motherwell Cluster, which includes Motherwell, Kamvelihle, Zwide, KwaZakhele, Swartkops and KwaDwesi Police Stations, they focussed on getting physically involved, according to Captain Andre Beetge. “We were involved in the Fun Run and Fun
Walk from the Truckers Inn to St George’s Beach,” said Beetge, adding that SAPS members enjoyed the prizes sponsored by Capitec Bank. “There were also speeches by motivational speakers. It was fun,” said Captain Beetge. In KwaNobuhle, members of the SAPS held a prayer service at Jeff Masemola Hall before going out to schools and communities to dish out pamphlets for safety hints to the public, said W/O Basil Seekoei.

Man arrested for dealing in drugs and possession of stolen property NCEBA DLADLA A PORT Elizabeth man was arrested for dealing in drugs and possession of suspected stolen property last week, thanks to information supplied by community members. Following a tip off from members of the community that a man was selling mandrax and suspected stolen goods from his Kwaza Street home in New Brighton, members of the PE Flying Squad went to the house at about 10am last Wednesday, said police spokesperson Warrant Officer Mncedi Mbombo.
“When they arrived at the house police asked for permission to search the building and found four Plasma TVs and two Play Stations with an estimated value of R31 500,” said Constable Mbombo. The police could not get the proof of purchase from the suspect when they asked for one. He allegedly told police he bought the goods from the boys who came to his house to sell them. Hence there was no proof. Police continued to search and found under a bed a white plastic bag with 753 Mandrax tablets with a street value of R32 240. The suspect appeared in court to face charges of dealing in drugs and possession of suspected stolen property.
Beachfront promenade gets a much needed upgrade REPORTER NEARLY four years of lobbying and effort from the Ward 2 councillor, Dean Biddulph, have finally paid off with the long expected and much needed upgrade of the promenade near Kings Beach finally getting underway at the end of last year. Biddulph said the need for the upgrade, which includes significant structural rehaWard 2 councillor, Dean Biddulph. PHOTO:SUPPLIED
bilitation, was uncovered during a preWorld Cup facelift in 2010. “Certain parts of the promenade were so badly degraded that a very real risk of collapse existed. Such an event would have been a disaster not only because of its historical value but also because a collapse would in all likelihood have taken a significant portion of Marine Drive along with it,” said Biddulph. Biddulph explained that the scope of works
takes care of mitigating any possible storm surge damage and resulting erosion, as well as making the promenade more attractive and significantly safer for the public. “This upgrade, along with continuous work along the beachfront and including the Kings Beach environmental upgrade, is all part of efforts to help transform our beachfront into a desirable, safe destination for residents and tourists alike,” ended Biddulph.

Beware of doctors claiming to do miracles NCEBA DLADLA A KWANOBUHLE couple is warning Nelson Mandela Bay residents against unscrupulous doctors who advertise their services in local newspapers claiming to do miracles. “We nearly lost a lot of money to a doctor who did not even want to identify himself,” said Sisa Scott of KwaNobuhle. Sisa’s vehicle, a White Isuzu bakkie (FNP 165 EC) was allegedly stolen at a friend’s house in KwaNobuhle on the night of December 2. She has a case number. When she could not hear from the police the desperate woman read in a local newspaper an advert of the doctor claiming to bring back lost properties. The doctor’s name cannot be mentioned because there was no case opened against him. “What attracted me most in the advert was the claim that there would be no payment effected until the property was brought back. It said ‘see the results before payment’,” said the unemployed woman. But as soon as she started communicating with the man via the telephone, she was asked to pay R120 for the airtime the doctor said he needed in order to make calls.
“This was followed by another demand for R1 000 which he said was to buy a sheep for the blood my ancestors needed. This time he said he did not even have to come to our house, we just had to go out, take off our clothes and wash with water in a basin. He said we should add mealie meal and soil to the water,” said Scott. She said while they were struggling to get the money from the loan shark (Matshonisa) the doctor made numerous phone calls and SMSs threatening her not to become clever. One SMS read: “Don’t try to play with me. You are not safe.“ When Scott decided not to answer his calls he allegedly wrote: “I’ll send my tikoloshes if you don’t pick up my calls.” Scott could not lay a charge. “Police said they can’t get hold of the man. He does not pick up his phone. Luckily I did not pay the R1000. He is a crook.” Asked for advice, a PE Express Indaba Advertising Executive says it would be difficult for anyone to act against the advertiser since there is not a police investigation against him or charges being laid. Otherwise no newspaper would allow such a person to advertise and put the name of the newspaper in disrepute.

Mother of four sought NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Services (SAPS) in New Brighton in conjunction with the Door of Hope, a Non-Governmental Organisation (NGO) looking after homeless and vulnerable children in Sydenham, Port Elizabeth, are looking for information on the whereabouts of Nonkoliseko Nakasa. Nonkoliseko, who could be using her first husband’s surname Mgundlandlu, used to live in Chris Hani Informal Settlement. She allegedly left her children Abongile, Aviwe and Avela in 2009 pretending to be going to the shop. She did not come back. According to Abongile, now 14 years old, his mother was carrying an 11-day old baby, her fourth child, when she left, saying she was going to the shop to buy them bread. Owner and director of the Door of Hope, Gladys Panda said she took care of the children after social workers told her their stepfather gave them up because he did not know the whereabouts of their mother.
“I am still looking after the children. But Abongile is experiencing serious problems. He wants his mother and is now causing problems in the home among other children,” said Panda. Explaining, Panda said Abongile, who trains boxing in the nearby club, becomes angry and agitated easily. Panda said they wondered why because they believed boxing teaches respect and discipline. “We are concerned. The behaviour of Abongile, who is generally a sweet and humble child, is bad. He is rude, bossy and tends to beat other children. He wants a sense of belonging and he does it the wrong way,” said Panda, adding that they had called in psychologists and Christian counsellors to assist the boy, to no avail. “These are brilliant children. They go to school and want to become something in life. But they want to know the whereabouts of their mother,” said Panda. “We urge anyone who might know the whereabouts of Nonkoliseko to contact New Brighton Police Detectives.
Where is Mzwandile Norman? NCEBA DLADLA MEMBERS of the South African Police Services in Motherwell are looking for information on the whereabouts of Mzwandile Jeremiah Norman (63) of Gugura Street NU5, Motherwell. Mzwandile left home on New Year’s Day (January 1, 2014) and was not seen since.
According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu he left home and did not come back. “Nobody knows his whereabouts and the family is concerned”. Anyone with information on the whereabouts of the elderly Mzwadile is asked to please contact Sergeant Daniswa Nqakula of Motherwell Detectives at 041: 405 6525 or 083 569 4363.

Human Dignity Centre a gem in the community REPORTER WITH thousands of impoverished and vulnerable kids in Walmer’s Gqebera Township, the Human Dignity Centre is doing its bit to help improve the lives of these children through quality free education, food and clothing. Established in 2001 by Jerusalem Ministries, the Human Dignity Centre has been a safe haven for over 140 vulnerable, orphaned and impoverished kids who are schooled, fed and clothed by volunteers and social workers from across the world at the centre. Human Dignity Centre’s Public Relations Officer, Peter Freeman, said the centre, which also operates as a foundation school from Grades 0 to 3, also helps HIV/Aids mothers and care-givers some also with kids attending the school) with vegetable gardens and skills development. While the children are in school some of the HIV positive care-givers or parents learn to do beadwork, make cards, knit scarves and beanies and sew garments. “The women that are given skills are HIV positive. We make sure that they learn how to sustain their lives and health, and also ensure that
they take their treatment regularly. With their vegetable garden, the women can also sell some of the vegetables that they do not need. The women are also given food parcels,” said Freeman. Freeman, however, said the Centre needed sponsors who would enable the school to be preserved and ensure that the kids received a proper education by ensuring that their teachers received salaries. “We have a wonderful staff of highly qualified teachers and social workers at the centre who earn little or no money because we do not have the funding. We need businesses and kindhearted people to sponsor our teachers because it’s difficult for us to provide a decent salary. We also have kids who are suffering from conditions such as Foetal Alcohol Syndrome who need special care. These are just some of the challenges that we have at the centre but we are lucky to have dedicated staff determined to make a difference in the community.” Human Dignity School Principal, Lungi Tikana, said as part of their programmes they have an “Orphanage without Walls” which caters for 216 kids and 81 families with full care and 150 children who receive food only.
Grade R class with teacher Nqabisa Peta. “We have ‘moms on call’ who help families, visiting homes to help with challenges they face. There are many families who live in garbage tips and eat only what has been dumped in those tips. We realised the need to help these families by providing them with food parcels. Families in the area, more especially kids, are extremely impoverished and we want to ensure

that we can break the cycle of poverty and help enrich the children and provide the mothers with sustainable skills and resources,” said Tikana. Freeman said they would appreciate any donations of food, books or funds brought to the centre. For more information on the centre contact 041 366 2082 or email hdchead@gmail.com.

This afternoon-drive show anchored by Azile Maka (21) is full of information and entertainment for both young and old. The programme is a good mix of news,

So we must be a source of information
to keep all of them listening to the show,” said Azile who is also the Station Manager. According to Azile, their listenership continues to grow because of the relevance of such programmes as Sunset Mix. This despite them being limited to the 20km radius which forms part of KwaNobuhle township and some parts of the Uitenhage City Centre from where they broadcast. “The content of the programme revolves around the Lovelife message of HIV Free
Generation. It is also about the youth development and empowerment issues,” said Azile, adding that as they target mostly young people, they make sure that they play music that appeals to the youth. “We, as the young people of KwaNobuhle have a platform to discuss issues, share ideas and grow our chances for a better life. We want to thank VW SA for the opportunity they gave us through this radio station,” said Azile proudly.

Girl (19) goes back to school, thanks to SAPS and Pep NCEBA DLADLA NOMATSHAWE Qebeyi regards her going back to school this year as the opportunity of a lifetime that she needed to grab with both hands. The 19-year old girl from New Brighton, who aspires to become a teacher one day, left school in September last year because, “I did not have school shoes and other things that school demanded,” she said. Meeting members of the SAPS Social Crime Prevention Unit on patrol last week was something Nomatshawe will always cherish for the rest of her life, she said. “We were patrolling the KwaZakhele Police Station precinct and saw this girl-child, who should still be at school, loitering in the streets. We asked her why she was not at school and she told us she did not have school requirements. “Nomatshawe told us she did not have shoes. Nobody was working at home. She said she had
given the only pair of shoes she had to her sibling who was at school,” said Sergeant Bongani Siyona. Siyona and his team went to the girl’s home address to verify what she told them. They also went to Thubelihle High School where she was in Grade 9. The principal confirmed that Nomatshawe was a learner at the school last year and that she could be re-admitted if she wanted to come back. “We established that she really wanted to go back to school and then took it upon ourselves to assist her,” said Siyona, adding that a meeting with Pep Store Manager Mary Simon and members of her staff helped Nomatshawe realise her dream. “We each donated money to buy her fullschool uniform including school shoes,” said Simon during the hand-over at the store in New Brighton. “I want to thank members of the SAPS, Pep Store staff and the principal for giving me this

The initiative is a joint venture between members of the Agricultural Research Council (ARC), a local Traditional Health Practitioner, a Non-Governmental Organisation serving the unemployed, poor and vulnerable members of the kwaNobuhle community and UDDI. This was launched at the former Sisonke High School which is currently used on a lease agreement by the Mother’s Gift to train people in producing food through gardening for their self-sustenance. “We came here to develop entrepreneurs interested in farming in the indigenous vegetables and medicinal plants,” said Dr Rofhiwa Mulaudzi, a Medicinal Enterprise Researcher in the ARC. Dr Mulaudzi and her team were the guests of Traditional Health Practitioner Dr Fred Isaacs and his wife, Sheila Isaacs, the founder and head of the Mother’s Gift, an NGO that cares for and feed hundreds of unemployed residents in the poverty- stricken community in Uitenhage. According to Dr Mulaudzi, they had found

through research the importance of using indigenous vegetables for good health. Those were rich in nutrition, she said, adding that through indigenous vegetables human beings can get Vitamins A, Vitamin C, Iron, Magnesium, Fibre, Zinc, Potassium and Protein that are currently lacking in the vegetables we eat today. Senior Research Technician Sharon Mulandana said they researched why people were still getting sick despite eating fruits and vegetables. They realised that a move away from the indigenous spectrum of vegetables and use of medicinal plants was the reason why most people suffered poor health. Dr Mulaudzi said they also decided on commercialisation of the indigenous vegetables and traditional health to help small scale farmers into becoming commercial farmers. She added that this was big business that local entrepreneurs in the province could benefit from whilst enjoying the benefits of good health. It was also important that communities destigmatise the use of these vegetables and traditional medicines, according to Dr Ashwell Ndhlala, Researcher - Agroprocessing of Medicinal Plants. He said they found many people in the country, like Dr Isaacs interested in the business and were in the process of mentoring them into being successful entrepreneurs.
“Thousands of newly matriculated young people are being turned away at universities owing to space constraints. It is encouraging to see so many prospective students include private higher and further education institutions as they consider alternatives. It is therefore most regrettable that there are still some unscrupulous people exploiting students’ difficult situation, for fraudulent and selfish financial gain,” says Dr Felicity Coughlan, Director of the Independent Institute of Education (IIE). The IIE is SA’s largest and most accredited private higher education institution, and Coughlan notes that private institutions are required to adhere to the same rigorous quality assurance processes as state universities meaning that if you register at the right private institution you are able to gain a qualification of equal standing and quality. Most private institutions operating throughout the country are registered and accredited and almost all offer a viable alternative for students seeking a post-school study opportunity. Students must however check the credentials of private institutions and thus deny themselves the protection of being sure about the status of the institution – and therefore the qualification – they are choosing,” she
says. “All the key information about the registration of an institution is available in the Register of Private Higher Education Institutions kept by the Department of Higher Education and Training, and the information is also readily available from reputable institutions.” Additionally, there are ways students can and should – interrogate institutions before parting with any money. “There are a few key questions to ask to which there are some simple answers, and if an institution is able to respond appropriately, it is worth considering,” she says. Before signing up, ask the institution: • To show you their certificate of registration with the Department of Higher Education. It should detail the campus, provider and the qualifications offered. No certificate – no go. •All higher education qualifications need to be accredited by the Higher Education Quality Committee of the Council on Higher Education. • All qualifications must be registered on the NQF by SAQA and students should ask for the SAQA NQF identity numbers. “Students eager to sign up in the current climate where spaces at tertiary institutions are scarce may be tempted to forego this little bit of additional hassle,” says Coughlan. “But failing to make the effort makes you enormously vulnerable to scamsters. “Ask these simple questions and contribute to strengthening the private higher education sector by making it harder for scamsters to continue to operate.”

War of attrition foreseen for the EC Junior Welterweight title this Sunday NCEBA DLADLA EASTERN Cape Junior Welterweight Champion Mlamli “The Gentleman” Madikane will not be coming to Port Elizabeth at the weekend to leave his title behind. This is the promise the East London pugilist made ahead of his title defence against Port Elizabeth challenger Lungisa “Naughty” Jikani at Walmer High School in Walmer this Sunday, February 2. The duo’s 10-round bout will headline Andile Boxing Promotion’s Development Tournament in conjunction with the Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture.
“This title is my ticket to greater things. The rate of unemployment is too high. I won’t allow Jikani to take my children’s bread,” said Madikane. Madikane who beat Xolani Wellem by KO9 to win the title in December has a record of 13 fights, 8 wins (5KOs), three losses and two draws. The challenger, however, has other plans. Jikani believes he’s got the beating of the East Londoner. “Madikane has been in the game for quite some time now. At 37 years of age he is past his sell-by date. I am going to beat him fair and square. A Knock Out will be a bonus,” said Jikani with 19 fights, 12 wins (5KO) and 7 losses. PE’s Siphosethu Ncisana will square off
