A
SIXTEEN year-old school-boy from Soweto-On-Sea has been arrested for the rape and murder of a toddler (2) on Sunday afternoon.
The names of the victim and the suspect cannot be disclosed as they are both minors and the
case involves a sexual offence. According to police spokesperson Warrant Officer Dumile Gwavu, the suspect was arrested after police investigation into the rape and murder of the baby boy who was found dead at Serote Street. “The toddler was last seen playing with other children at Songololo Street on Saturday around 12 noon. He was reported missing at
around 1pm on Saturday,” said W/O Gwavu. According to Gwavu, a search ensued and the toddler’s lifeless body was found in a house in Serote Street, Soweto-On-Sea, around 3pm on Sunday. He had blood on the back of his body, according to Gwavu. Police are still investigating the cause of death. After police investigation, the boy (16) was ar-
rested on Monday. The suspect was kept in custody and is expected in court today (Wednesday) 29 October to face charges of rape and murder. Dora Nginza Hospital Principal Social Worker Pamela Rubushe described the crime as “horrible.” “This is a sad story. It’s painful and horrible and it is for this reason that we always call for heavy sentencing.”

Rev. Jesse Jackson appointed as PPC Cements beauty of New Brighton’s Jarvis Mandela Bay ambassador NCEBA DLADLA AWARD winning Radio Station Umhlobo Wenene FM had the pleasure of hosting African-American civil-rights activist Reverend Jesse Jackson during its Breakfast Show BEE last week Wednesday. The cleric thanked the Eastern Cape leadership for inviting him to come to these shores to experience what he called “a deep connection” with the motherland, Africa. Rev. Jackson applauded South Africa for 20 years of a vibrant democracy and three successive free and fair elections and a stable government. “I am impressed with your democracy. Twenty-years later, the ANC has a stable government. Your constitution allows freedom for women and people of colour,” said the international Human Rights activist. “This is however, just 20 years. We are in the morning of the new beginning. Things will not be done overnight, “ said Jackson. He added that South Africa must somehow learn to democratise the econo-

my like she did in politics and ensure that there was equality. “Remember, the layers of apartheid were not even skin deep. The layers of apartheid were bone-layer deep. They go to the bonemarrow. Meaning that it is going to take time to overcome the racial apartheid, educational apartheid, land apartheid and access to capital apartheid,” said Rev. Jackson. Rev. Jackson said equality meant equal access to resources. He said that it would take time to overcome because of the layers and forms of apartheid. He challenged South Africa to have passion for education. During his stay, the Reverend, who also took the position of being Nelson Mandela Bay Ambassador to the US, visited the graves of the political icons and legends like Govan Mbeki, Raymond Mhlaba, Griffiths and Victoria Mxenge, Steve Biko and Oliver Tambo to pay tribute.
Gqamlana Primary School
NCEBA DLADLA BUILDING construction company PPC Cement has made a difference in the lives of the pupils of Jarvis Gqamlana Primary School in New Brighton. The company rebuilt the caretaker’s house which was demolished in a fire during a burglary a few years ago. Vandals had taken advantage of the school since the fire. The school had been broken into many times and that had adversely affected teaching and learning, according to principal Ndiphiwe Ngqawana who thanked PPC Cement for the gesture. “This R100 000 renovation has made a huge difference to the school. When the building was burnt down, we were the victims of vandalism. The state of the school made it difficult for effective teaching and learning to take place. This was a pain in the neck seeing thieves coming in to do what they liked in the school,” said a delighted Ngqawana. The two-bedroom house with a kitchen and lounge, was now in a state where someone could live in it. According to Ngqawana, the mood for both the learners and teachers had improved as a result. “It was an eye-sore to all of us and members
of the community” he said. PPC Cement Risk Manager Hugo Badenhorst said they were touched by the plea they received from the Metro Community Development Forum about the condition of the school “Having built the school’s bathroom before, we decided to come and assist as part of our Corporate Social Investment (CSI) Project,” said Badenhorst, adding that they used R100 000 to renovate the four-roomed house to make it habitable. “They (PPC Cement) have brought back the good image of the school. The parents of the school are very happy. There is so much positive outlook here now that we foresee a positive growth in the school,” said School Governing Body Chairperson Yaliwe Papu An overjoyed Papu admitted that this was their first successful project as the SGB. She said they were hoping a lot more things would be coming to the school. ”We’d like to urge more parents to bring their children to the school,” said Papu. Mzwandile Gwaqu of the Community Development Forum said they would work hand in glove with the SGB and members of the community to ensure that they looked well after the school. He said they would protect its beautiful image.

Newton Park pool re-opens with a splash LASHEIGH LUCAS THE Newton Park swimming pool opened to the public last week Friday after months of renovations and hard work. “The Municipality is proud to announce that the pool is ready and open to the public,” said municipal spokesperson Mthubanzi Mniki. The pool has been closed since July last year when a burst pipe caused the water to go green and interrupted the SA National Aquatic Championships. Approximately R1 million was spent on the pool upgrade. The re-opening also coincided with the Learn to Swim Programme that the Municipality is currently running through the
Sport and Recreation Sub-directorate. “Swimming is a very important life skill because it is a sport that can save a life,” said Ward 39 DA councillor Margaret de Andrade. There are currently 3 000 learners taking part in the Learn to Swim Programme. All schools are urged to participate in the programme and are also allowed access to using the pool. “We need to try to drown-proof every child in the country and allow children to be able to pass on their skills,” said De Andrade. Councillor De Andrade concluded with the vote of thanks, thanking all the people who contributed to the hard work and all the learners who are part of the Learn to Swim programme.
Two suspects nabbed for illegal possession of firearm and ammunition MEMBERS of the South African Police Service (SAPS) K9 Unit arrested two men in their early 20s for possession of an illegal firearm and ammunition on Sunday afternoon. According to police spokesperson warrant Officer Gerda Swart, the K9 Unit members, acting on information about the possibility of a firearm on the premises and armed with a search warrant, visited a spaza shop in Amanzi Street, KwaNobuhle Township and produced a search warrant. “They searched the premises and indeed recovered a 9mm Norinco Star and ammunition and arrested the two men in their early 20s who were in the spaza shop.
LAY BYE NOW FOR CHRISTMAS
According to Warrant Officer Swart, the firearm will be taken for ballistic testing to see whether it was previously used to commit crime in the past. She said the two suspects were expected to face charges of illegal possession of a firearm and ammunition at KwaNobuhle Magistrate Court, in Uitenhage today (Wednesday) October 29. W/O Swart thanked members of the community for trusting the police and giving them information in an act to combat crime. She said, “We encourage members of the community to continue giving police information that will help us clean the streets of crime and criminals.”– NCEBA DLADLA

Walmer Masifunde Choir up for R100k grand-prize in national competition NCEBA DLADLA WALMER High School learners taking part in the Masifunde Youth Choir Comptition could make their school R100 000 richer in the not too distant future. The group of singers and dancers have been announced as one of the five finalists of the 2014 My School Sing and Dance Competition. The winners of this national competition will be announced on Thursday November 27. “We received over 100 entries and loved viewing every one of them. Our judges were impressed by the talent, innovativeness and beautiful voices from all over South Africa - we really have amazing talent in our SA schools,” said Masifunde’s Shan Khan. After long discussions and debates, according to Khan, the judges decided on the five finalists and announced them as follows; Curro Hillcrest Christiana Academy from KwaZulu-Natal, Nelspruit Primary School (Mpumalanga), Riebeek College Girls’ High (Eastern Cape), Somerset College (Western Cape) and Walmer High School’s Masifunde Youth Choir from Nelson Mandela Bay. “Being chosen among the five finalists in the country means that this choir is special.
“They are one of the best in the country. And who knows, they might bring the title home,” said Masifunde Fund-Raising and Communications Head Edem Foli. According to the organisers, the five finalists must compete in Round 2 of the competition for the Grand Prize. Walmer Masifunde Choir Facilitator Zena Bally believes the choir has the ability to bring the title to Walmer/Gqebera. “They are very dedicated. We meet every Monday to Friday after school to work on our sound which is a combination of Hip Hop, House, Gospel, African Traditional and European Classics. We also do Latin German,” said Bally proudly, adding that there’s a lot of raw-talent among Walmer township’s youth. “They’ve got beautiful voices,” she added. To bring out the best in them, Bally said, she works with a starright-system which is a positive reenforcement system. The choir rendered two beautiful pieces for PE Express Indaba. Without a doubt, these young Walmer township musicians could get anything between positions one and three and bring home at least R50 000 second and third prizeawards if not the R100 000 grandprize.

Senior Citizen Year winners announced BETTIE GILIOMEE
A CROWDED dance floor with
even a man of 109 years old dancing in his wheelchair to end off the BLG Logistics Senior Citizen the Year Awards on Saturday, was proof that age does not have to prevent one from keeping active, not only enjoying life but also giving joy with one’s life. The awards saw three ladies walk away with top honours. Maggie Cunningham (79) was the winner in the age group 70 to 79 years, while Jumartha Milase Majola (82) and Wilhelmina Africa (90) took first place in the 80-89 years and 90 and over categories respectively. Also honoured on the evening were two people who have passed the 100 years’ milestone- - Jan Steenberg, who is 109 currently and two months shy of his 110th birthday in December and Sally Hearnden, 102. The prestige awards, of which Port Elizabeth Express is a media sponsor, are run as an annual event by the Golden Oldies Fundraising Club in collaboration with BLG Logistics, recognising the time and effort volunteered by senior citizens making a positive contribution to the community. Spec-Savers was one of the ma-
jor prize sponsors of the awards. The Summerstrand Hotel sponsored the venue for the event. Maggie is the founder member of Northern Lights School serving physically disabled children, Coloured, Black and Indian children who could not attend mainstream schools. She is also on the board of Executors of Cheshire Homes SA, as well as Seringa Association for the Aged and Busy Bees Women’s Association of her church, and is actively involved in the Sanctor Medical Centre. Jumartha started an old age group in 1982, now known as Hoza Golden Age club which is still going strong. Members at Hoza are encouraged to be involved in their community activities. She also started the Girl Guides club (now affiliated to Age-in-Action) in which she encourages senior citizens to keep healthy by inviting nurses to present health talks. On a monthly basis members’ blood pressure is recorded, as well as their weight. Counselling is provided to those in need. Wilhelmina is a former missionary who is the leader of her Bible Study Group and is involved in various associations which make a difference in the community.

Mashologu-Kuse spearheaded the event with her company Daring Media, which had the Public Protector giving a speech on the current issues affecting the youth of South Africa, at a youth dialogue session at NMMU, followed by a civic participation and dinner at the Boardwalk ICC. Mashologu Kuse, whose mother, NMMU Social Work Professor Thobeka Mashologu died of cancer in 2011, said the visit by Madonsela was a huge success. “The Youth Dialogue was attended by 600 young people and the dinner by over 200 professional and business people. It brought people from the Bay together – all because one young person thought it could be done. They said we couldn’t do it but we did,” she said. “My mother started the Social Work Department at Unitra (known as WSU), and became the second Black female professor at NMMU. For someone that grew up in a 4-bedroom house in Mdantsane, she proves to me and many others you can be that which you want to be,” added Mashologu-Kuse. Madonsela praised Mashologu-Kuse in her speech at NMMU, saying the country needed more young women who aspire to greatness. “When I was invited to be part of this event, I felt the need to comply because of the great inspiration a mother can be to her daughter. We need more young women and men like Kazeka who are vibrant and courageous to honour unsung heroes like her own mother,” said Madonsela. Madonsela also spoke about her role in government, saying that Chapter 9 institutions needed youth participation and that leaders today needed to be more transparent and accountable to the youth. Mashologu-Kuse, who is also the owner of Daring Media, said her company had shown that there are young people that deeply care about this country and that there was power in an assembly of young people coming together. “We are all about going there – where people are afraid to go and talk about the issues that everyone talks about behind closed doors,” Mashologu-Kuse said.

Seminar for single men and women ARE you single and concerned. And would like to do something about it? Then, Emthonjeni Family Church’s Singles Seminar at the Nangoza Jebe Hall on the Saturday 1 November is for you. The Seminar is aimed at empowering single men and women with life skills which include preparing them as individual characters. They learn to discover who they are, what they want in life and in a relationship. According to Emthonjeni Church Senior Pastorn Ntanjana, they get skills to save breaking marriages. “We’ ll be hosting well known relationship coach Joe Mwanza. As a Marriage/ Relationship coach, Mwanza is passionate about making this world a more loving place by teaching people about how to love themselves and one another,” said Monde Wani of the organisers. According to Wani, coach Joe has been coaching, teaching and sharing information on how to keep the marriage/relationship alive, overcome jealousy, communicate with love and many other relationship topics. “This is the church’s response to one of the most pressing concerns of the country, the rise of rate of divorce. We are concerned that the family structure is in trouble,” said Wani, adding that they were also concerned about the moral degeration in communities. “We believe that good families make good communities, and that the moral fibre of families informs and is informed by the moral levels of communities. The family structure is responsible for socialisation, empowerment, equipping, and protecting of their members, and thus of their communities,” said Wani who’ll spice the day by including comedy in the event. – NCEBA DLADLA

According to Njobe of KwaMagxaki, all kinds of sports were played including netball, aerobics, sack race, tug of war, egg race, eating the egg, ugqaps, upuca and passing the ball. “Everybody took part in the competition, even our president Mazoe Nopece played. Bekukhutshiswana kumnandi kuyiloo nto.(We were competing. It was such a nice
experience),” enthused Njobe, who received MEC (Xoliswa Tom’s) Special Award last year for commitment in church women sport last year. “The winning teams were Kariega 2 of Port Elizabeth and Tsitsikamma,” a proud Njobe said, adding that their 2014 Sports Day at Lilian Ngoyi Sports Centre, was a resounding success.

Public Private Partnerships boost for Uitenhage soccer club INDABA REPORTER PUBLIC and private partnerships in action are key to the effective development of the people, especially the youth. This was said by the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Deputy Executive Mayor, Thando Ngcolomba, before handing over soccer kits and training equipment to the Uitenhage-based soccer team, United Brothers. Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba handed over the kit and equipment to United Brothers at the request of Makhetha Development Consultants, an engineering company that bought the kit and equipment. Makhetha Development Consultants is one of the companies doing engineering work for
the Municipality, more especially in the field of sanitation solutions. The company became aware of the team when they were doing work for the Municipality in Uitenhage, KwaLanga and Rosedale. As part of giving back to the community, they approached the community to check which project within the community they could support. The community unanimously agreed that they should support the local soccer team by providing soccer kits and seeing to other needs. Not only did the company decide to support the team, but to adopt it. This donation forms part of many things United Brothers have received from the company, including cash donations. The company has also assisted in levelling their uneven playing field. The Deputy Mayor was accompanied by
Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality’s Sport and Recreation Portfolio Chairman, Nomamerika Soul, and the South African Football Association (SAFA), Nelson Mandela Bay President, Monde Mhletywa. The Deputy Executive Mayor said that government was under pressure to deliver to everybody with limited resources. “As government we cannot do it alone. It is honest partnerships like this that will benefit our people, especially the poorest of the poor and the youth. These young men are the future of our country. If we do not take care of them now, we are killing the future of the city and the country as a whole,” said Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba. “I call on other private companies, especially those that get work from the Munici-
pality and government, to plough back in the areas where they work. It is not only a responsibility, it is a noble thing to do,” said the Deputy Mayor. Club President, Stanley Taku, said: “The seed that the company has planted in these young men will grow into something bigger one day. I also want to thank the Municipality for giving work to this company so that it can find some resources within its budget to support us as a team. Blessed is the hand that gives, God will bless them more,” said Taku. The team is playing under the Langa/ Rosedale Football Association that is affiliated to SAFA. They were runners-up in their league last season. “This support is a clear message to the players that we must win the league this season,” said Taku.

Bucs takes revenge against Movers
Ideas tipped as hot favourites in Nedbank Cup
FOLLOWING their 4-1 loss to Ikamva Movers in the Nedbank Cup game, Royal Buccaneers took asweet 2-0 revenge victory against Movers during their SAFA Nelson Mandela Bay SAB Regional League game at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Bucs opened their account when Thanduxolo Gxwalintloko came up with a goal from the penalty spot early in the first half. Movers had lots of clear cut opportunities but the strikers failed to give life to their side. Bucs trio Mcebisi Fire Gawulana, Akhulile Eto’o Dlilanga and the super substitute Luntu Boloti made Movers pay for not using their chances. In the late stages of the game, Boloti jumped very high to score a beautiful header to make the final score 2-0. Young Ideas continued with their winning momentum when they sal-

Company comes to the rescue of club MAKHETHA Development Consultants Engineering made a generous donation to KwaLanga community club United Brothers FC in the form of kit and sport equipment at a function held in Newton Park on Thursday. According to Makhetha Development Consultants Engineering Director Martha Makhetha, the company was delivering to the community club which was very desperate. Makhetha said that the donation was in line with their Corporate Social Investment (CSI). “When we were doing a project in Uitenhage some time ago in particular KwaLanga and Rosedale, and we saw lots of kids who had nothing to do. What we saw in Uitenhage, made us aware that people needed help. We approached the community so that we could do something for them. The community unanimously agreed that we should help United Brothers FC. So part of our CSI we decided to come to the rescue of United Broth-
ers FC,” said Makhetha. United Bothers’ President stated that their objective of establishing the club was to keep the kids off the streets and to refrain from taking drugs. Taku said, “We want to develop players for the national team and we want our players to have dreams in their lives so that they can change their lives”. Nelson Mandela Bay Deputy Mayor Chippa Ngcolomba said that the government could not help everyone at the same time with the limited resources. Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba appreciated the gesture made by Makhetha Development Consultants Engineering. “Our government has a pressure to deliver to every person because funds are so limited. We cannot do it all alone. Good partnerships like this move our country forward,”concluded Deputy Mayor Ngcolomba. The kit consisted of a full kit, tracksuits, 10 balls, bibs and cones. – SELBY MADIKANE

Valencia FC tamed Young Tigers VALENCIA FC ran rampage over Young Tigers FC which they tamed in their 3-1 victory during their MOFA Build It Premier League clash at Motherwell NU 9 Stadium on Saturday. Valencia made matters difficult for Tigers as they forced them to commit errors in the crucial areas of the territory. The first goal of game was pulled by Valencia wing Abongile Mki in the 37 th minute. Valencia increased the score when Khanyisile Neymar Mayo unleashed a thunderous low short in the 43rd minute with Tigers having no reply. However, Tigers who seemed threw many bodies forward, decreased the
deficit to 2-1 following a well taken goal by Luyanda Faltein in the 79 th minute. It was unfortunate for the losing side as their joy was short lived after Mayo pulled a trigger from 35 metres to register his second goal in the 82 th minute to seal the game at 3-1 in favour of Valencia. Other MOFA Build It Premier League results: Manchester United 1-5 Motherwell United, Young Madrid 4-1 Real Aces, Young Romans 1-2 SUBS, Tottenham Spurs 2-3 Tomorrow Stars, Lion Stars 0-0 Milan Stars, Real Strikers 3- 0 Liverpool, Crystal Palace 2-1 Shining Stars, Manchester FC 1-0 Highland Spurs.
