National hero Malusi Puwe calls the nation to read NCEBA DLADLA
M
INISTER of Basic Education Angie Motshega is complaining that the majority of South African Primary School children cannot read or write.
The Minister was recently quoted in the media saying that the reasons why matric results were low in the country, lay in the inability of children to read and write in the lower grades. A Port Elizabeth resident Malusi Puwe on the other hand, is working hard to ensure that children’s literacy improves through the national reading-for-enjoyment campaign, Nal’ibali. According to Puwe, Nal’ibali is a direct response to the national outcry for children to read and experience the magic of stories. Following his first name Malusi, which means the Shepherd, Nelson Mandela Bay Nal’ibali Cluster Mentor Puwe of Mlonji Street, NU8 Motherwell is setting up and supporting already existing reading clubs. Puwe is truly committed to sharing the potential that stories could spark in children. “We must encourage our children to be part of Nal’ibali, a programme aimed at helping them improve their literacy levels,” he said. Through the campaign and together with the help of two StorySparkers, Puwe has set up three reading clubs in Motherwell Primary Schools, Ikhwezelihle, Imbasa and Enqileni. He said he was happy with the progress of the clubs at Zanoxolo and Fumis’ukoma Primary Schools, and is now focused on setting up clubs in Uitenhage and spreading further around Nelson Mandela Bay. In Nal’ibali, children learn in a safe and relaxed environment. They are able to read, tell stories and talk with their peers about what they are reading. “Group members also have fun writing, singing songs and playing games related to reading and writing, because, as children experience stories and books, they grow to love them and become better at reading and writing,” explained

Puwe. Puwe received specialised training from the Project for the Study of Alternative Education in South Africa, (PRAESA) which is co-driving the Nal’ibali campaign and has 20 years experience in community reading clubs and early literacy development. “We are all born to tell stories, memorise and make sense of life in story form. So Nal’ibali uses the power of stories – oral and written, and in as many languages as possible – to inspire children to want to read and write,” said PRAESA director Carole Bloch. “Many stories hold important lessons which
can help to shape and develop our children. If children are introduced to books and stories from an early age, we will be developing a nation of readers,” said Puwe. Puwe was first inspired to read as a youngster by the stories his uncles told him – in particular by the South African folk story, The Jackal and the Wolf. He believes that all South Africans must tell stories to their children; be it at bedtime or in the car or taxi on the way to school. “Care-givers must first develop a love of reading themselves and then model this for their children,” said Puwe.

Inspiring morning for domestic workers HEILIE COMBRINCK “THINGS sometimes look impossible, but by changing your mindset those same impossible things can become possible.” This is according to Siphokazi Lugodlo (55) who once was unemployed, homeless and hopeless, but changed her mindset and at a relatively late age enrolled as a student at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University. If all goes according to plan she will be capped next April receiving her BA degree majoring in Psychology. Lugodlo will be the special guest speaker at a breakfast held for domestic workers, inspiring the women to let the best in them take control of their lives. “I’ve set my heart on becoming a clinical psychologist, as I believe this is what I am destined to be.” The event is hosted at Barkly Street Theatre on the 17th August in celebration of Women’s Month. Joining her on stage will be the popular “Maria Zibula” or Themsie Times from the television series 7de Laan. “The aim of this event is to acknowledge not only the role fulfilled by domestic workers in the lives of those whose households they take care of, but also the role they have to fulfil in their own households,” said Yolene Basson from Khanya (“Be Bright Where You Are”), a registered non-profit organisation presenting this event exclusively for domestic workers. “We kindly request employers of domestic workers to treat these ladies to this special event by purchasing a ticket at Barkly Street Theatre. “There will also be lucky prizes for employers who have supported this event by granting their domestic worker the opportunity to be treated on this day.” Last year’s event was well attended with a total of 100 domestic workers enjoying a morning full of inspiration and treats. According to Councillor Siena Baartman, “The municipality will once again

Mayor Ben Fihla responded to our invitation and there is a good possibility that he will be attending.” Saloma September will be designing a special garment for guest speaker Siphokazi Lugodlo. Learning problems could be result of focusing problems EVERY child has trouble with homework from time to time. If a certain area of learning is consistently problematic, it might indicate a learning disorder. According to local optometrist Francois Jordaan, 80% of learning problems are associated with a focusing problem. Children receive an eye screening at school, but these screenings only indicate children with poor distance vision. According to Jordaan, the bulk of children with learning problems suffer with one of the following:
. Over- or under- active focusing system (focus = the ability of the visual system to make objects appear clear at a close distance). . Over- or under- active fixation system (fixation = the ability of the visual system to make objects appear single at a close distance). . Poor visual coordination (visual coordination = the ability of the focus and fixation system to work together). . Poorly developed gross motor muscle system (gross motor muscle system = the

working of the eye muscles around the eye). . Poor balance. Typical learning problems . Skip words or lines with reading/ put in own words. . Copy incorrectly from board. . Re-read words. . Poor visual memory (forget what was read). . Hyperactive and poor concentration. . Complain that words or letters ‘swim’. . Complain that words are blurry on book
or board. . Headaches at the front or sides of the head. According to Jordaan, possible solutions include a proper visual analysis by a remedial optometrist who will make a proper diagnosis of the underlying cause. Visual therapy or remedial spectacles might be prescribed for reading purposes. Referrals can be made to an occupational therapist, psychologist or remedial person. Help could be found for a needy Walmer township family NCEBA DLADLA
B
LAZING fires brought the backyard shack and home of Fezeka (30) and Attwell Qwane (34) of Walmer Township down in December 2012.
The couple suspected a neighbour whose name is known to PE Express Indaba to have caused the fire. The man whose backyard shack was also burnt down to ashes, was allegedly drunk on that fateful night. The fire destroyed everything this family owned, including their Identity Documents (IDs), Attwell’s Security Officer certificates, the family’ birth certificates and other important documents including their two children’s clothes and school uniforms.
Since that day, this unemployed couple and children aged 13 and nine, have been living by the Grace of God. Neighbours helped them with material to rebuild their shack, and some (material), they got from the Tip. “My husband wakes up every morning to scrape at the Tip. If he does not bring anything that day, then we go to sleep on empty stomachs,” said Fezeka. After listening to gospel artist Nobandla speaking on Umhlobo Wenene FM recently she waited for her to leave her contact numbers, and a desperate Fezeka contacted her for help and she obliged. Nobandla opened her heart and pocket for this family. “She bought us groceries and blankets. We
thank her for that.” said Fezeka. Fezeka claimed even though they reported the matter to Ward 4 Councillor Nomajama Benya’s office, they had still to hear from the councillor. She admitted however, not to have spoken with the councillor yet. “We do not know about this. It’s the first time we hear of it. This family should come to our office. In fact, they must go and collect a form from the South African Social Security Agency (SASSA) office. We’ll assist them in filling it in to ensure that they get some groceries,” said Benya. This is but a short-term arrangement, according to Cllr Benya. She said a more permanent arrangement could be made to get a security job for Attwell - even if it was for three months.

New album launch for Spirit of God gospel group at Babs Madlakane Hall NCEBA DLADLA SPIRIT of God Gospel group will be launching its 4th album “Kutheni kunje kulo hlaba” at the Babs Madlakane Community Hall, KwaNobuhle on Saturday, August 10. This 10-track traditional gospel album with a mixture of modern sounds by a 14member group, made up mostly of learners, was recorded at Dolce studios in East London and produced by a talented Siyabonga Hlekani. “We wrote all the songs ourselves,” said group member Avuyile Mabala who sings first soprano. Inspired by Joyous Celebration ensemble sounds with the touch of African traditional beats of Sipho Makabane the group
believes this album is going to catapult them to stardom. Said Mabala, “Our first three albums did not do well in the market. Of course, they introduced us to the local public as a group to watch. But this time, we believe we have hit the right note as the country is going to see from this album.” According to a tenor Masixole Joyi, Spirit of God Gospel Group have plans to sell their latest rendition nationally. Since they started in 1999, the group has been invited to perform around Nelson Mandela Bay. They boast of having groomed Nomazotsho Swartbooi, a recorded artist aka Mbasa in Mandela Bay. Written, choreographed and directed by Zenzi Mbuli, Footsteps will be at the Port Elizabeth Opera House from tomorrow August 1 to August 3. The award-winning show is being brought to Port Elizabeth through a joint venture between the national department of arts and culture and the Performing Arts Council of the Free State (Pacofs). Footsteps is a story about two young people from different villages who are deeply in love, but cannot be together because their parents disapprove of their love. When they part the girl gives the boy a bangle that was a present from her grandmother as a symbol of her love. The girl disappears, and the boy decides to search for her. This starts a journey during which he comes across an old wise man, who tells him to go to a place called “Maraka-
las,” and that he will find the love of his love there. His travels take him through a valley and mountains, when the sound of a drum leads him to the place where his love is. A big celebration happens! The story is told through tap-dance, music and narration. Included in the cast is choreographer Derrick Dlamini, who was a member of the troupe which performed in London. Dlamini also toured the USA, Asia, Europe London’s West End with Mbuli’s Gumboots, which is a story about working in the gold mines of South Africa. The other original cast member is Matshidiso Mokoka, who was inspired at an early age by Mbongeni Ngema’s Township Fever to start dancing. She was part of the South African troupe that danced in Jackie Chan’s movie “Who am I?” Footsteps has played to standing ovations at the Market Theatre in Johannesburg, the Stable Theatre in Durban, and the State Theatre in Pretoria. Tickets cost R60 and are available through Computicket. Shows start at 19:30.

Local boxing promoters in an important meeting to discuss the future of boxing NCEBA DLADLA
licensed and registered boxing promoters will be discussing the implementation of the resolutions taken during the 2012 BSA national road-shows. Among the topics to be discussed include Television broadcasting of fights, sources of funding from national government, provinces and municipalities and the revival of Baby Champs, a programme that helped produce great pugilists that this country was to be proud of, including Bongani Mwelase, Sabelo Jubatha and Zukisani Kwayiba, to mention but a few.
NELSON Mandela Bay boxing promoters Sibongile Nkebe, Gladys “Noforty” Tsenene, Mbulelo Mfama and Andile Siqwepu will attend a meeting that will discuss the future of boxing at Alberton Community Hall in Johannesburg on Saturday 3 August. According Boxing South Africa (BSA) Director of Operations Loyiso Mtya, the meeting called by boxing’s governing body for
“Promoters will also be expected to make inputs and recommendations for the National Boxing Indaba to be held at the end of September, said Mtya. Speaking to PE Express Indaba, National Boxing Promoters Association chairperson Mzimasi Mnguni was upbeat about the meeting. He said it was long overdue. Head of Eyethu Boxing Promotions Mnguni said the Eastern Cape chapter of the promoters association has been calling for such a meeting for a long time. “This is a very important meeting to dis-
cuss pertinent issues that affect boxing. How I wish it’s not going to be another talkshow; that people will be going there to make positive contributions and find solutions to the problems that bedevil the sport,” said Mnguni. Mnguni commended BSA for planning such a meeting as many people were already discussing the issues in different corners. “We must engage real issues and make it work this time around, for the future of boxing,” he said.

KwaNobuhle footballer Real City won Royal Bucs will play against Chiefs Tournament NCEBA DLADLA THE future of Nelson Mandela Bay footballer Sinethemba Sdeba looks very bright. This 20 year-old lad from KwaNobuhle township in Uitenhage will make the national amateur team to play against Nedbank and Premier Soccer League (PSL) champions, the mighty Kaizer Chiefs in Johannesburg or Durban in January next year. Sdeba was among more than 15 000 of the country’s enthusiastic youth who went to the

trials for the Nedbank Ke Yona Team scheduled to play against Nedbank Cup holders, according to Manchester Babes Ladies Football Club owner and coach Sandile Konono. Molly Blackburn High School matriculant Sdeba was one of the three players chosen from the Eastern Cape. The others were Masixole Njokweni of Motherwell and a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) student Lukhanyo Ndabetha. Pitting talented amateur footballers against the PSL Nedbank champions was Nedbank’s initiative towards football development. “This is a dream come true for me, I’ll make every second count,” said an elated Sideba. This great opportunity came at the right time for Sdeba, according to Konono who watched this promising Highland Spurs FC central defender play, and was impressed. Konono said he mentioned Sdeba to his Johannesburg friends and associates with the hope of getting him a professional club - because of his immense talent. “As I was still talking to the (players’) agent in Joburg, the Nedbank opportunity came and indeed Sdeba shone,” said a proud Konono, adding that Sdeba was being watched by some PSL clubs (which he would not mention at that stage) for a possible signing. “The school is very proud, especially from the area where Sideba comes from. We believe he is going to motivate others to consider sport to change their lives for the better,” said Molly Blackburn Soccer Team manager Andile Hena.
