Begraafplase gesluit ná reën RAAHIL SAIN EN TINNEKE GOEDHALS

Sommige van hulle wag reeds twee maande om hul geliefdes te begrawe en ná die afgelope reën kan dit nog ’n hele rukkie duur voor dié begraafplase weer oopgestel kan word. “Dis nie die invloed wat dié toestande op ons besigheid het wat die probleem is nie, maar hoe die vertraging die families raak,” het Jeanette Chetty, bestuurder van Doves Jones and Rice begrafnisse en verassings, gesê. “Mense wat begrawe moes word, moet nou eers gebalsem word, en dit kos sowat R1 500. In dié stadium word

niemand begrawe nie, alles staan stil.” Sy sê die gebalsemdes word in hulle yskaste gebêre onder ’n baie spesiale temperatuur sodat hulle nie ontbind nie. “Ons stoor die lyke veniet. Dit is Moeder Natuur se skuld dat die families sit met die dilemma en ons wil hulle nie nog verdere hartseer aandoen nie.” Volgens Chetty kos verassings die familielede duurder omdat hulle dan deur ’n verassings-diensteverskaffer moet werk. By Doves Jones en Rice is daar drie lyke wat nog nie begrawe kon word nie, maar sy het genoeg plek (ongeveer 40 tot 42) om nog lyke te stoor. Die Forest Hill-begraafplaas begin ’n al hoe groter kopseer word, omdat dit een van die Baai se besigste begraafplase is. “Forest Hill sal seker eers teen volgende jaar weer oop wees. Intussen is dele van die Noord- en Suideinde-begraafplase ook onder water,” het Prue Gillespie, eienaar van 1st Avenue-begrafnisdienste, gesê. “Ons onderneem wel begrafnisse in Malabar, Uitenhage en Despatch, maar die situasie plaas geweldig baie spanning op die families.” Volgens Jan van der Westhuizen van Algoa Park Begrafnisdienste het

Maandag sal die pikkewyne en malgasse op ’n tydelike “vakansie” na ’n ander gedeelte van die kompleks skuif. “Die modernisering sluit nie net ’n groter gebied vir die pikkewyn in nie, maar ook onderwater-besigtigingsvensters sodat besoekers hierdie bedreigde voëls in hul natuurlike habitat kan waarneem,” het hy gesê. “Vir die robbe is daar ’n vertoonswembad met ’n nuwe paviljoen van waar ons besoekers die vertonings kan dophou. Die akwarium sal ook verbeter

word met ’n reeks kleiner akrieltenks om die besoekers se ervaring te verbeter.” Hy het ook vertel van die verbeterings aan die prehistoriese uitstalling wat met skadunette en “boomsambrele” ’n oerwoudagtige sprokieswêreld-atmosfeer gaan kry. As gevolg van die aanbouings sal die slangvertonings in die museum se dinosourusgalery aangebied word. Dit sal steeds daagliks om 12:00 wees. “Dit is opwindend dat Bayworld uiteindelik die finansiering ontvang het om sy uitstallings te moderniseer, hoewel die R10 miljoen net ’n druppel aan die emmer is. “Ons het ’n enorme inspuiting nodig sodat ons dolfyne kan terugkeer en ons met die dolfynprogram kan voortgaan,” het Bell bygevoeg.

William Moffett Expressway gets extra lane ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

HE heavy traffic congestion on William Moffett Expressway that has been experienced since the closure of the 3rd Avenue dip, should be alleviated when an extra lane becomes available this week. The municipality has taken the step to convert the three lanes of one side of William Moffett Expressway into double lanes on either side of the road into three lanes. This is for the section between Allan Drive and Cape Road only. Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Acting Director: Communications, Marthie Nel, said last

week that the expressway’s existing lines are in the process of being blackened out, with new lines being painted on the road surface. Ward 6 DA Councillor, Retief Odendaal, welcomed the new lane, saying that this would make a significant difference to traffic congestion. In the meantime, the 3rd Avenue dip remains closed until a full assessment has been done to ascertain the damage the recent flooding of the Baakens River has caused. Only after the assessment is done, can repairs start. “We appeal to residents and motorists to stay away from the 3rd Avenue dip, as curious onlookers are interfering with municipal operations by, for example, dislodging the bollards,” Nel added.

Gelvandale ECD wins award PE EXPRESS REPORTER ABSA has boosted the Early Childhood Development (ECD) sector with an entrepreneurial tang by supporting practitioners with skills to run sustainable ECD centres as businesses. The 2012 ECD Awards is the only awards programme of its kind in Southern Africa which recognises best practice through a provincial and national competition. Sisa Ntshona, Absa Head of Enterprise Development, said: “With the high levels of unemployment and poverty, we want to be facilitators of job creation. That is why the role of entrepreneurs can never be underestimated because they essentially drive the economy and ultimately create jobs for themselves and others.” ECD involves nurturing physical, cognitive,

emotional and spiritual development in children. This is part of the national priority to reduce child poverty so that children are provided with the correct stimulation to grow into healthy, balanced adults. ECD practitioners play a vital role in society through their work with children, laying the foundation for basic learning and life skills. The awards programme aims to promote and recognise their excellence, hard work, dedication and investment in the future of South Africa. THE babies and preschoolers at Little Angels crèche have been wrapped in love and warmth by Theodor Herzl School pupils and friends, who knitted them blankets and teddy bears to keep them snug when they nap on the floor of their single classroom in Walmer township. The woollen items were accepted on their behalf by philanthropist Glenda Brunette, who actively assists nine crèches in the area through her Walmer Angel Project. Theodor Herzl Primary School teacher Chantal Klackers said the blankets had been “handcrafted with love”. “Every opportunity to help others reinforces the ethos of kindness that we strive to instil in our pupils. Our knitting club was started this year by Rebecca Kilbride (12), in Grade 6, who wanted to make a positive difference in the lives of disadvantaged children. Some of our Theodor knitters are as young as 8. They meet weekly and churn out bright squares from donated bits of wool. Grannies, parents, staff members and friends also contribute to

our project, and all the squares are simply crocheted together to make cozy little blankets,” she said. “The colourful blankets are perfect for babies or for knee rugs for the elderly. The knitting club delivered a pile of blankets to the Thand’usana Babies’ Safe Home in Newton Park earlier this year.” Brunette said the Walmer Angel Project’s focus now was on keeping the young children warm in the rainy weather. Basic first aid and hygiene related items – from plasters and antiseptic lotion to toilet paper and toothpaste – are also high on her wish list. “There are 38 children at Little Angels crèche, aged between 3 months and 5 years, who play, learn and sleep in this one classroom. People may wonder what they can do to help, but these young learners at Theodor Herzl have shown that just one knitted square makes a difference! What is important is to keep the blessings rolling.” Brunette also runs a soup kitchen in Walmer, which is currently feeding more than 80 people. Her son, Brendan Brunette, has committed R20 000 per year for the next 10 years to the Walmer Angel Project, through his fresh produce distribution company, Rocket Seed.

Third semi-finalist chosen in Walmer Park’s Kitchen Maestro THE third cook-off in the Walmer Park’s first Kitchen Maestro was held on Saturday with contestants preparing pan fried Beef Fillet with Sautéed Mushroom and Drunken Pecorino Sauce. Two of these weekly cook-offs still remain and will continue every Saturday from 10am to 12pm in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre Promotions Court until and including November 17. Every Saturday five entrants compete against each other. Cooking away the second spot in the semi-finals last Saturday, was Elke Gerber. The entrants had to prepare the recipe, provided by Dewald Hurter of Chez Patrick restaurant in Port St Francis, within a specified time period. Dewald is the Chef for Kitchen Maestro and will be preparing all the menus for the contestants, as well as doing live demonstrations of the dishes on the days of the cook-offs in the Walmer Park Shopping

Centre’s Promotions Court. Local celebrity foodie and chef, Charl Leslie from Algoa FM, will compere the events.

How to enter:

Every week the ingredients of the “cooking pot” change. These ingredients are revealed on Algoa FM and printed in the PE Express every Wednesday during the cook-offs.

This week (Round 4) the entry recipe must include: Chicken Breast Feta Olive oil Parsley Garlic

Entrants will have to use these ingredients in a recipe and provide the recipe and a photograph of their completed dish, as well as a short story on why they love cooking and why they entered for

the competition. The deadline for this week’s entries is next Tuesday at 12pm. Five contestants will be selected from all the entries received during each week to participate in a live cook-off to be held at Walmer Park the following Saturday. Each week a winner will be chosen to go through to the semi-final cook-off to be held on November 24, where the contestants will compete for one of two places in the Kitchen Maestro final. Entry is open to any amateur ‘Chef’, over the age of 16. Entry forms will be available at the Walmer Park Info kiosk, as well as from their website at www.walmerparkshoppingcentre.com. Third cook-off recipe: Pan fried Beef Fillet with Sautéed Mushroom and Drunken Pecorino Sauce During Saturday’s third cook-off contestants had to prepare Pan fried Beef Fillet with Sautéed Mushroom and Drunken Pecorino Sauce. Here’s the recipe:

Pan Pan Fried Fried Fillet Fillet

200g rump steak/sirloin/fillet Canola oil Salt Black pepper

Mushroom Mushroom sauce sauce

1 tsp. chopped onion 4 x button mushrooms

30ml red wine ½ tsp. chopped garlic ¼ tsp. chopped parsley ¼ tsp. chopped thyme 150ml fresh cream 8g grated drunken pecorino Lemon wedge 5g Butter Salt Black pepper

Fillet: Fillet: Drizzle canola over the steak and season well with salt and pepper. Heat up a pan, the pan should be very hot. Drizzle a little

canola oil into the pan. Brown the steak on all sides and set aside. Cook steak to your preference just before dish is served.

Mushroom Mushroom Sauce: Sauce: In the same pan fry the onion and mushrooms in a little butter, add garlic then deglaze the pan with the red wine. Add the herbs and cream, simmer for a few seconds. Add the drunken pecorino and season to taste. Simmer until sauce is coating consistency. Finish the sauce with a bit of butter and a dash of lemon juice.

Westering’s Matthew receives Lantern

WESTERING High School’s deputy head boy for 2012, Matthew Steyn, was recently awarded the school’s most prestigious award, the Lantern Award.

For a Lantern Award to be achieved, a learner needs to attain excellence in all areas of school life, namely academic, sport, cultural and service. Leadership also forms part of the criteria. Matthew comes from a hardworking family who have encouraged him to be an all-round achiever. His sister, Megan, matriculated from Westering High in 2009. She was the head girl and also obtained her Lantern Award. “My sister has been my role model and very influential in my life,” Matthew said. Matthew is a keen hockey player and received his colours for the sport. “In Grade 8 I decided to attend the boys’ hockey trials to see how I would do as I played rugby in primary school. My coach noted that I didn’t have the skills to be a field player, so she suggested I try out for the position of goalkeeper, a position I have been playing since,” Matthew said. He had been exposed to first team level since Grade 8, often attending their practices. He finally made his debut for the first team at the end of Grade 9 and has played for the first team for the past three years. He captained the team for the past year and received the Scholtz trophy in 2011 for the best senior hockey player. He did ballroom dancing for three years and achieved “highly commended” for his dance exams. He has

I want to make use of all that I have learnt at Westering so that I can reach my full potential.”

Rocky Horror Party to raise funds for animal charity FANS of the Rocky Horror Picture Show can get their Time Warp dancing moves ready for when Bellbuoy and Pearson High School’s Ecos group presents a party with this movie as its theme to raise funds for the Animal AntiCruelty League (AACL). The Rocky Horror Picture Show party will take place in the Pearson High School Hall on 17 November at 7 pm. It is “compulsory” for guests to arrive in full Rocky Horror costume. All proceeds from the evening will be used for a Spayathon in Thornhill that the AACL will be holding on 25 November. The MC for the evening will be Frankenfurter, aka chameleon-performer, Reyn ffoulkes, who will lead guests through the fun procedures. There will also be a screening of the movie with AACL Clinic administrator and well-known choreographer, Jerry Fortuin, and AACL fieldworkers demonstrating The Time Warp. The entire audience will learn to Time Warp and there will be prizes for the best Time-Warper as well. A DJ will take over after the screening,

ATKV-PEAAT het bied vanjaar vir hul jaarlikse produksie musiekteater – eerder as ’n toneelstuk – aan. Die produksie “Onthou om te onthou” beloof om die gehoor terug te neem na die dae van heerlike Afrikaanse luistermusiek. Van die kunstenaars wat oorspronklik die luisterliedjie-beweging begin het, soos Koos du Plessis, Laurika Rauch, Coenie de Villiers en Amanda Strydom, se musiek word in hierdie intieme produksie onthou. Mazda BT-50 given the mom’s taxi treatment BETTIE GILIOMEE FOR those who do not know the mechanics of this column, herewith a brief description before I start with my review of the Mazda BT-50, Mazda’s brand-new bakkie. I write from a non-expert opinion, from the opinion of someone who doesn’t even know where to open a bonnet or would even want to open it. So this column will not focus on the power, with or without load, of the bakkie, its torque, 4x4 handling etc. but rather on how it fits in with my lifestyle as a mom whose only 4x4 travelling is by chance hitting a pavement when reversing or one of the many potholes Port Elizabeth has to offer. And looking at my fellow motorists, there surely are many bakkie workhorses doing donkey duty during the week before they are let out to be played with by dad over the weekends.

Many people can wax lyrical about the exterior of cars, even bakkies, but to be honest a bakkie is not the most beautiful of styles in my opinion. From what I gathered watching a motoring show on television, the experts are quite divided on the look of the Mazda BT 50 - especially from behind. The comments are, however, much more postive as far as the pretty prominent nose goes. I found it to be quite an impressive presence. It’s big and bold and I would not recommend visiting your favourite shopping centre at a busy time of the month when parking is at a premium – I tried it, only because as a working mom, shopping time is also at a premium. But several possible parking spaces had to be left for the driver behind me - no taking chances with PE’s big wind parking too close to other vehicles.

Interior

In contrast to the bulky bakkie on the outside, the designer’s focus on the inside is definitely on giving a car-like experience. It is stylish and well laid out. You certainly feel as though you are rather in an SUV than a bakkie meant for the farm. The instrument panel is also more like what

you would expect in an SUV and as a standard feature on all in the BT-50 range, the steering wheel has controls for the Bluetooth phone, audio and cruise control. There is also a whole list of comfort features. The seats sit comfortably and there are plenty of storage spaces. It also has a 12V accessory socket. A slideout tray on the passenger side of the instrument panel can serve as a handy table for a laptop.

Safety features

A standard feature across all three trim specifications is a full house of active and passive safety equipment, including Dynamic Stability Control (DSC) with ABS, EBD and traction control. In addition, it boasts Brake Override System (BOS), Load Adaptive Control (LAC), Trailer Sway Control, Roll Stability Control, Hill Launch Assist and Hill Descent Control.

Ride

After a lot of head- and neck-jerking forward and backward, I soon realised it is better to pull away in second gear as the first gear is very short. Changing gears is also a bit, well – bakkie-like, especially into second. Once it gets going though, it feels unstoppable and the readings are constantly urging you to shift a gear higher. The ride is firm without any load. One big, big plus is the rear sensors. I have always maintained that a vehicle of this size, especially used in town, should be equipped with sensors. The range offers three powertrains: a 2.5l TDi (turbo diesel intercooled) engine, a 3.0l CRDi (common-rail direct-injection) diesel engine, and a 2.6l EFi (electronic fuel injection) petrol engine.

Price

The single cab range starts at R190 330 for the 4×2 petrol, and goes up to R354 200 for the 4×4 diesel. Six derivatives are available. The freestyle cab begins at R231 950 for a 5speed manual 4×2 diesel, and tops out with the six-speed manual 4×4 diesel costing R398 970. The line-up consists of five derivatives. For the double cab range, pricing starts at R340 480 for a six-speed manual 4×2 diesel, and the most expensive in this range is the sixspeed auto 4×4 diesel which costs R462 210. Six derivatives are available as double cabs.

In the past the Abu Dhabi Grand Prix has been accused of making motorsport boring but in its 2012 guise there was no inkling of a procession. Instead, the Yas Marina circuit unleashed an electrifying showpiece.

The drama started in the dying seconds of Saturday qualifying as Sebastian Vettel’s Red Bull came to a stop on the circuit after setting the third fastest time. While Lewis Hamilton secured a dominant pole position questions and speculation started swirling around the Red Bull of championship leader Sebastian Vettel. After nearly five hours of deliberations amongst FIA stewards and the Red Bull team, Sebastian Vettel was demoted to the back of the grid because not enough fuel was left in the tank to supply the obligatory one-litre sample. Red Bull opted to start from pitlane, giving them the opportunity to change the gearbox and gear-ratios thereby making the RB8 more proficient in overtaking. Lewis Hamilton’s dominant pole position seemed set to be translated into an equally authoritative race performance but the bad luck that has stalked him in the 2012 was not letting up. A fuel pump failure just as in Singapore brought an end to his race. Realistically, the Lotus has struggled over the last five Grands Prix and has been nowhere near front-running pace. However, as the stars were aligning in Abu Dhabi Kimi Raikkonen was determined to pluck them out of the sky and re-arrange them in the way that few would have expected. An issue for Hamilton promoted him

to the lead of the race but he controlled it brilliantly. He built a gap of eight seconds over second-placed Alonso before the deployment of the first safety car and similarly saw a near ten-second gap eroded by the second safety car period. There came a point in the race which summed Raikkonen up to a tee. Over race radio an engineer informed the driver that he would continue to update the gap to Alonso and his own pace, to which Raikkonen responded: “Just leave me alone, I know what to do.” This is Kimi Raikkonen –a no-nonsense character born to be in a Formula 1 car leading a Grand Prix. And he did know what he was doing as he took the Lotus all the way to the chequered flag for the first win since his comeback to the sport. While the front of the race was being masterfully conducted by the championship contenders the night air seemed to have gotten the better of the mid-field runners. Several incidents resulted in retirements, penalties and two safety car periods. The most frightening incident occurred between Narian Karthikeyan and Nico Rosberg. The German driver seemed to underestimate his closing speed relative to the HRT and spectacularly launched the Mercedes over the cockpit of the Indian driver’s car. Rosberg’s flying Mercedes narrowly avoided Karthikeyan’s head; another lucky escape for F1 which will again reignite the discussion of closedcockpits. Sergio Perez’s form of late has left a lot to be desired and perhaps Ferrari’s di Montezemolo wasn’t so far off the mark about the Mexican’s inexperience after all. The Sauber driver cut across the front of Romain Grosjean

bringing the Lotus driver’s race who in turn destroyed the rear-suspension of Mark Webber’s Red Bull. The question of who deserves the championship has raged all season long. It may not have a definitive answer yet but Sebastian Vettel has delivered a performance that could swing it his way. The Red Bull driver lost part of his front wing whilst trying to overtake Bruno Senna and a mistake behind the safety car, wiping out a marker board, showed that it wasn’t a flawless afternoon. The mistake forced Vettel into the pits for a replacement wing dropping him to the back of the field for a second time. He sliced through the backmarkers without incident and by the time the leaders had made their pitstops he was running in second place. Somehow, it looked as though he might have a chance of pulling off a sensational victory but Red Bull opted to play it safe on tyre wear and pitted the number one Red Bull. The second safety-car period erased the twenty seconds lost in the pits. Fourth at the re-start with much fresher tyres it looked again like he might win. However, Jenson Button’s defensive driving kept him at bay long enough. Vettel ultimately passed the McLaren for third place. His determination, ability and hunger culminated in a drive worthy of being called his best yet. News of Kimi Raikkonen’s comeback to F1 had been met, by some, with doubt and cries about his lack of enthusiasm. Seven podiums, including victory, third in the championship and the only driver to complete every race lap is Kimi Raikkonen’s comeback so far – not bad for a lazy, unmotivated driver.

Family beach series starts The 2012/2013 Weekend Post Ocean Racing Series – Africa’s largest family beach event – gets underway this weekend as hundreds of fun-seeking families get their summer fitness fix. The Series now in its 8th season has grown to include something for anyone keen to get outdoors and have some fitness fun with the most popular disciplines being the Dis-Chem 1km and 2km Ocean Swims, whilst the Crickley Dairy Kids 12u 1km Beach Run is fast catching up with over 100 kids anticipated for this discipline on Sunday morning. Also gaining keen interest for the families is the About IT 5km Beach Run and the 5km Beach Walk. Season 8 will comprise 9 race days between November and April next year, mostly on alternate Sunday mornings with participants able to select to take part in any one of the 5 disciplines on offer each race day. A once-off Series registration at just R50 is required in order to secure a Series number for this season and an exciting Registration function will kick off the new Season on Friday between 5.30pm and 8pm at News Cafe, The Boardwalk. All Series members attending the registration function will each receive a News Cafe goody bag, which will include a Season 8 t-shirt. All present will also stand a chance of winning a top-of-the-range Blueseventy wetsuit, a Castle Lite patio cooler or a host of other exciting lucky draw prizes on the night. Sunday – Round 1 – kicks off with entries between 7.30am and 8.45am where members and late entrants hit Hobie Beach to select their discipline and get their race wrist band. All races start from 9am and are following by prize giving for the kids at around 9.45am, the realisation of a Dream for the Reach for a Dream Foundation at about 10am and then the adults medals and lucky draw prizes. All finishers in the Crickley Dairy Kids 1km Beach Run will receive medals courtesy of Crowhurst & Bond Optometrists and all finishers in all events will receive cold liquid refreshment from Tsitsikamma Crystal. Olympian wins secbands 10km swim

As expected, Olympic open water swimmer Jessica Roux was in a class of her own on Sunday morning during the 2nd round of the Secbands EPA Swim Challenge Series at Marina Martinique. Roux swam a comfortable 10km swim in 2hrs 14min and 29sec. Rebecca Newman placed 2nd in the 10k swim whilst Brenton Williams completed the distance swimming butterfly. The top two male swimmers in the 5km were disqualified after swimming the wrong course whilst ladies winner was Chane de Jager in 1: 17.53. The 3km swim saw just under 50 swimmers taking part and included Paralympic swimming ace Kevin Paul. Daniel and Wayne Jones dominated the race with Daniel finishing in 38.46, just 24 secs ahead of Wayne, whilst Caro de Jager won the ladies 3km race from Jamie-Lee Engelke and Veruschka Jordaan. The 1km swim saw the welcome return of former top open water swimmer Byron Lockett with Kirsten Marriott claiming the ladies title. In the Kids 10u bank to bank swim it was Paul Rutters and Siphokazi Rwanqa who took the honours this month. LONG AGO we had the Great Trek. It tested the mettle of South Africans to the limit. This week the available best of the country’s cricketers and rugby players embarked on their own trek – admittedly not as portentous – but nonetheless treks that will ask many questions of their skill, endurance, composure and character.

The Proteas’ match against Australia A in Sydney revealed little cricket followers didn’t know, except that you never take a test – the first encounter starts Friday in Brisbane – against Australia less than seriously. Graeme Smith’s team is undoubtedly one with plenty of character and talent. They are presently No. 1 in the world. But, as many wise old heads will tell you: “You never know quite what to expect from the Aussies at home.” Perhaps that’s why some 60 years ago as Jack Cheetham’s Springboks (then so called) were set to tour Australia, renowned SA sportswriter, Louis Duffus, fearing humiliation of our cricket, set up a virtual campaign to cancel the planned visit. He argued that with great names of the time, such as Dudley Nourse, the Rowan brothers, Bruce Mitchell et al, having retired, the untried cricket talent of the early ’50s would be totally humiliated by the likes of Keith Miller, Ray Lindwall, Arthur Morris, Neil Harvey, Richie Benaud and others. Duffus wasn’t alone, but none of the critics reckoned with the inspirational captaincy of Jack Cheetham or the raw courage of his young crew. The South Africans in-

credibly drew the series 2-2. With a cocky young Roy McLean taking the crease at a critical moment, the Boks needed a win to draw the series. “Don’t worry, Pops,” McLean told the skipper, “I’ll get ‘em for you!” And he did in typically swashbuckling style. Yes, the Proteas have a mountain of talent, and Smithy’s boys have the ability to do the same. Okay, deep breath, now rugby. As you read this Heyneke Meyer’s Boks will be just two-and-a-half days away from kickoff in Dublin against Ireland. The side, led by veteran centre, Jean de Villiers, is bursting with fresh young talent. It may not be the ideal team Meyer would like to select, but as the old-timers say: “It’s too late to haul old cows out of the ditch!” Much too late! The coach lately has at times resembled a little boy with a pocketful of money at the school tuck-shop. Some of the sweets are “temporarily off-market”. Like all small boys spoilt for choice, he seems not to realise it. He actually said last week: “Jaque Fourie can still play for South Africa, Fourie du Preez too, and there’s Frans Steyn and Bryan Habana.” (He went on and on.) “Think of it, suddenly you’ve got a hell of an experienced backline. Hopefully one day, I can pick that backline!” Forget it, Heyneke. Go with what you’ve got. The youngsters you are tying yourself in knots over, need to be given their big breakthrough chance. Only then will they be able to show you, as former greats down the years have done, what they are capable of. For inspiration, Coach, look back at such greats – then look ahead to a future that is strewn with golden nuggets along a path that’s verdant and green!

Die Trax is die sewesitplek-Captiva se kleiner boetie en het sy wêrelddebuut onlangs op die Parys-motorskou in Frankryk maak. Daar was ’n leemte in Chevrolet se modelreeks om juis so ’n kleiner sportnutswa, soos die Nissan Qashqai en Honda se CR-V, aan die mark te kan bied. Dit is juis dié segment wat tans blitsig groei en waar vervaardigers mekaar deesdae verwoed takel. Oor die Trax sê Chev dat die waentjie kleiner maar ruim en prakties is, en dat sommige modelle selfs oor vierwielaandrywing beskik. Chev spog dat die Trax soos ’n goeie gesinsmotor sal hanteer en as dit vereis word, ook van die teerpad af sy staal sal kan toon. Boonop sal vyf mense met gemak in die nuwe sportnuts vervoer kan word. Drie enjins sal in die Trax ingespan word. Daar is ’n 1,4 liter-turbo-petrolenjin, ’n 1,6 literpetrolenjin (sonder ’n turbo) en ’n 1,7 liter-turbo-dieselenjin. Die 1,6 liter-reeks sal net oor voorwielaandrywing beskik, maar die enjin se kragsyfers is nog nie bekend gemaak nie. Die Trax het buiten ’n bagasieruim wat ’n stewige 358 liter kan insluk, verskeie los plekkies in die kajuit waar goed gebêre kan word. Dit sluit laaie onder die sitplekke sowel as holtes in die vloergebied in. Al kan hy net vyf mense bevat, is daar agt kombinasies hoe die sitplekke verskuif of opgevou kan word. Selfs die voorste passasier se sitplek kan platgeslaan word. Die luukser modelle sal onder meer Chev se sogenaamde MyLink-vermaakstelsel hê wat met ’n raakskerm werk. Met die slim skermpie sal jy jou radio en CDspeler kan beheer, asook die satnav-stelsel kan
