HE Walmer Link Social Housing Project, which was officially opened by the minister of Human Settlements, Tokyo Sexwale, last week, has been lauded as the best social housing project in the country. This award was made by the Social Housing Regulatory Authority (SHRA). Social Housing is affordable rental accommodation for households earning between R2 500 and R7 500 per month. The rentals are on a sliding scale based on household income and range from R560 to R2 107 for a bachelor unit, R606 to R2 250 for a 1-bedroom unit and R657 to R2 250 for a 2-bedroom unit. While all phases of the Walmer Link Project have been completed and 293 of the 347 units already occupied, the developers Imizi Housing Utility are hard at work on their next social housing project which will be situated in Restitution Road, Fairview. According to Anthony Ngcezula, CEO of Mizi Housing Utility, they have started with the earthworks at the Fairview site and building will be done in phases over the next 18 months. “Some of the units might be ready for occupation by as early as December, if the weather does not interfere much with construction,” said Ngcezula. According the Ngcezula, the Walmer Links Social Housing Project is a collaborative effort of Imizi and the developer, The Home Market, both non-profit companies and for public benefit, the National and Provincial Departments of Human Settlements, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality and the General Motors Foundation South Africa. It is the first greenfields social housing project in Port Elizabeth. “The Walmer Link Social Housing Project is a tale of perseverance and just reward for

the directors and staff of IMZI and The Home Market. After 10 years of slogging away to get its first project off the ground, and to receive this award for it, is testimony that there are people in this city who want to make our city a winning city,” said Ngcezula. “The Walmer Link Social Housing Project demonstrates that it is possible to provide good quality affordable rental accommoda-

tion to households that need it. These projects are in good locations and one of their intentions is to bring people closer to their workplaces, thereby saving time and money,” he said. With regard to safety concerns over Walmer Link being closely located to the Walmer Township, Ngcezula said no break-ins have been reported in the two months since the fit-

ting of burglar bars in all the rental units. “Walmer Link is surrounded by an electric fence with guards on duty 24 hours. All the units will be fitted with security doors soon. According to Ngcezula they are also in the process of upgrading the security system to a biometric access control system whereby residents will be able to enter and exit the premises by fingerprint identification.
