Exciting lineup for NAF 2012 PE EXPRESS REPORTER

JAM-PACKED programme of activities can be expected at the 6th annual Northern Arts Festival held at the Marock Road sports grounds in Sanctor in Nelson Mandela Bay from September 21 to 24. This year there is an entry fee of R5 per person for every day of the festival. The broad spectrum of arts and cultures will come to life as the Northern Arts Festival puts on a show celebrating various forms of art through a variety of activities planned over the four days that the festival will run. The annual Cleary Park Shopping Centre/Northern Arts Festival 5km Family Fun Run takes place on Saturday, September 22, from the Cleary Park Shopping Centre at 7.30am. The route follows through the community of Arcadia, Sanctor and Salsoneville, and ends again at the Cleary Park Shopping Centre sports field (next to Build It). There is fun for the entire family, and the little ones will be taken good care of in the larger than ever before kiddies playground. There will be fun rides, face painting, toys, and games to entertain the children while the rest of the family can enjoy the entertainment on offer. The entertainment line-up taking place on two stages at the festival grounds remains a highlight, with performances expected by well-known local artists. According to festival director, Billy Paulson, the festival has always been a celebration of local talent, giving a platform to a host of local performers in the city to perform to crowds of thousands of people. “The community show up in their thousands to support local talent, which is an amazing experience to witness. This festival really is about bringing everyone together to celebrate the arts and our shared herit-

age,” said Paulson. The highlights on the line-up include New Afro Teenz, Gino Lee, Shoe Lace, Spectrum dance group, PE’s Finest dance group, Life Line and many, many more. There is a host of exceptionally talented local

On Saturday, September 22, the Duidelik Kleurvol Music Spectacular will feature a “bring back the stars” show with Lionel Peterson, Felicia Marion and Melvyn Matthews. Both Peterson and Marion are legendary national artists, and are currently part of a tour around the country with Jonathan Butler. Marion is the singer of the mega hit, “Paradise Road”, and has performed alongside Hugh

Central’s Havelock Square revitalised with launch of Oh!41 development PE EXPRESS REPORTER WHAT started with the renovation of one or two historic buildings in the Central precinct into student accommodation has grown into the renewal of entire streets, including Havelock Square and its nearby Park. Aengus Investment Properties (AIP) is transforming Port Elizabeth Central into a thriving mixed-use property development and their latest development, the Oh!41 creative hub, will be launched at Havelock Square in October. “What we’re seeing is an interactive and collaborative approach to sustainable neighbourhood planning and development,” says Oh!41 creative director Amy-Leigh Weldrick. “This recognises innovation and creativity and is sensitive to an area’s history, while emphasising the people living and working there. We believe a neighbourhood is only sustainable when its economic, social and physical systems work together.” “Our strategy has always been to invest in communities around our buildings to revitalise areas,” says Richard Rubin, CEO of AIP, who has eight years of rejuvenating inner city properties around South Africa.

“The mixed retail and residential development planned for PE Central will help attract people back to live, relax and shop in the area.” At the heart of its revival strategy is converting historic Victorian buildings into stylish and affordable student accommodation. The company currently owns six buildings in the Central precinct, including four buildings on Havelock Street. These buildings have been completely renovated and offer students 350 beds with gyms, laundry, security and entertainment services. “Students are looking for affordable, safe, convenient accommodation with all the mod-cons, such as wireless internet and organised transport to and from campus,” says Rubin. “Central PE is situated close to universities and colleges and is an ideal place for students to study and stay in style.” Aengus has built its reputation on buying, upgrading and managing inner city properties in other major cities. Already the project has inspired guerrilla gardening – next, local artists will transform the park near Havelock Square by installing sculptures to beautify the surrounds. Weldrick believes Oh!41 will not only be the catalyst for making the area safe and beautiful again, but will help attract visitors from outside the area. The Royal Canin TailWag Walk will be held at 10am on September 29 at Kabega Park Primary School. The cost is R20 per dog and R5 per person walking with a dog. According to the two organisers, Frieda-Marie Du Preez and Eliska Rabie, they had to as part of their final year project choose a non-govern-

mental organization that they must help raise funds for, or help them with what they need. To this end they have arranged the TailWag Walk in which participants will enjoy a 2km walk with their dogs in streets surrounding the school. Other activities will include agility and Schutzhund displays, trick horse demonstrations and an owner-and-dog look-alike competition. There will also be a fun category dog competion where dogs will be judged by criteria such as Happiest/ friendliest dog, Best groomed dog, Best overall good health, Best rescue dog, Best trick dog and Best dressed dog. There will be food stalls for the visitors, as well as a raffle for a hamper.

Royal Canin is the main sponsor of the event and will be providing water bottles and click bowls for the dogs, abandana for each dog that completes the walk, ball throwers and goodie bags. amongst others. Save-a-Pet is an animal rescue centre situated near Greenbushes that rescues, rehabilitates, reunites and re-homes abandoned, abused, lost and stray animals. They are currently housing approximately 200 dogs. The students are also collecting food and blankets for the dogs, and are helping to raise funds to care for and to pay the veterinary bills.

HYBRID Creative Interaction, the Information and Computer Technology (ICT) provider for Khanyisa Foresight Muller Lellothe (KFML), recently installed a computer lab for the Ray Mhlaba Skills Centre which is part of the EP Child and Youth Care Centre. “With IT being one of the main drivers in the economy we felt that this would be a perfect base for the children to hone their IT skills,” said Mark Phillips from Hybrid Development. Their design team got their hands dirty too by creating some amazing murals with an IT

theme. “Hopefully this environment will be conducive to learning and having fun and who knows, maybe the next “IT Billionaire” will be created here,” said Phillips. Caroline Ferreira, manager of the Ray Mhlaba Skills Centre, was ecstatic with the donation as the computer lab will be used to teach invaluable computer skills to the children of the children’s home, as well as the students in their woodwork, hospitality, needlework and other programmes. “The children were delighted with the opportunity to learn these skills so that they can become self-sufficient to do their own homework research. They quickly tried out the computers under the guidance of the team from Hybrid Development,” said Ferreira.

Walmer Park Baby of Year sought PARENTS who would like to enter their child for the Walmer Park Shopping Centre’s annual Baby of the Year Competition can have their entry photos taken this weekend. The compulsory photographic facility, run by Debbie Louw Photography, will be held in the Dischem Court on Fridays, Saturdays and Sundays, leading up to the finals. These will be held between 10am and 2pm from September 8 until September 30. Parents and relatives can enter their babies and toddlers in three age categories: 0-6 months (babies born from April 7, 2012 to October 7, 2012 ); 7-12 months (babies born from October 7, 2011 to October 7, 2012) and 13-18 months (babies

born from April 7, 2011 to October 7, 2012). A standard entry fee of R50 per entry, including the R5 which will be donated to PE Childline, will be charged for photos taken at the centre and will include 2 colour jumbo prints. Parents and relatives can enter their children into this competition only by having their photos taken by Debbie Louw in the shopping centre during the competition. Entry forms will be available at the photographic facility. The entrants will be judged on their photographic appearance, after which ten babies per age category will be selected to go through to the finals. These thirty babies and toddlers will then be

individually interviewed with their parents and judged on their appearance and alertness prior to the prize giving ceremony which is scheduled to take place on Saturday, October 6, at 10am in the Centre Promotions Court. The winners and runners-up in each age category will be announced at this gala event. All entries received will be on display in the Centre for the duration of the competition. est group on 13 November 1999 became an autonomous Club on 20 April 2002 and is therefore celebrating its tenth anniversary this year. Let's talk about TB

TB is a disease that, although preventable, is still ravaging the people of our city. Over the following few weeks, the District Office of Health aims at sharing certain key information on TB with you. The objectives of these articles are to, primarily, prevent the spread of the disease and, secondary, to advise on how to optimise treatment in order to achieve the speedy cure and recovery from TB for those who have contracted the disease (yes, TB is completely curable). In this instalment, I wish to touch on some general issues. TB is largely preventable, yet in our city we have about 10 890 people on treatment every day. This excludes the 417 patients who are in the 3 TB Hospitals. Why would this be, one wonders? Pulmonary TB (TB of the lungs) is caused by an organism called a TB Bacillus. It is so small and light, that it easily spreads from person to person through the air. That is why we ask people to be aware of when they cough or sneeze in the presence of anybody else. This happens at home, on buses, taxis and trains, in offices and, yes, even in sports bars and shebeens. 3 easy steps to stop the spread of the disease: In past we asked people to just place their hands over their mouths when they coughed or sneezed, but we now ask people to cough & sneeze into their sleeves or into a piece of cloth that will not allow any germs to go out into the open air. Also, open windows to allow fresh air to continuously come into any area you are in. How does your latest album, The Wisest Ones, differ from previous albums?

The album is definitely a lot darker than our previous material. In some ways this came from a change in band members, but more than anything, it

came from a desire to write and record music that challenged and inspired us. And a lot of the music that inspires us, is a little darker and edgier.

What would you say is some of your biggest achievements? Definitely winning both the SAMA’s and the MAMA’s for best alternative, and supporting The Killers on their South African tour.

Where is your favourite venue/city to perform? And why? The Eastern Cape always show us a good time. Grahamstown and Port Elizabeth have been two of our best attended club gigs ever.

What in your opinion makes PE great and not so great?

Stanley Street, Uncle Charlie Superstar and Sardinia Bay – that’s what make Port Elizabeth great. What makes it not so great? Recognition for local learner’s peace poster

AAlex lex ttops ops iin nH IP2B² HIP2B² ALEXANDER Road High School learners took top honours at the Port Elizabeth round of the HIP2B² iThink Challenge powered by Pronutro. In this round, which took place at Collegiate Girls’ High School, 23 schools took part in a variety of science and maths-related tasks, riddles and problems. The teams started off with a taste test to awaken their taste buds in order to create a new ProNutro flavour. The first round was done by all eight team members whereafter they split into two teams of four for the separate

legs of the competition. Humansdorp Secondary went on to win the ProNutro cereal competition with a green winning flavour of “Minty Banana Coffee” ProNutro. The other leg of the competition continued with rounds filled with major sensory stimulation. Learners had to gather information from audio and video files to complete several rounds. The answer to their last maths riddle gave them a code to unlock a padlock containing elements for the last round, which was won by Alexander Road High with Grey High School in second place. They had to build a car from 2F coke bottles and other sup-

plied components and the first car across the finish line was that of Alexander Road High. Saadiyah Mayet, one of the PE HIP2B² champions, said that learners who participate must be able to think on their feet and have an interest in science, maths and technology but certainly don’t need to be ‘boffins’. “We were there to help show other learners how these subjects can come alive through real-life experiences that really mean something to our generation. To that end, we have invited as many learners as possible to participate in this year’s Challenge,” Mayet said.

St Mark’s Primary School Gr 7 learner, Johane Strydom, has taken the first step to becoming an internationally recognised artist by winning the Lions Clubs Multiple District 410D competition sponsored by the Port Elizabeth St Croix Lions Club. Strydom’s poster was among more than 350 000 entries submitted worldwide in the annual Lions International Peace Poster Contest. Lions Clubs International is sponsoring the program to emphasise the importance of world peace to young people everywhere. “When I Imagine Peace, there will be no fighting, No tears, everybody is happy and smiling,” the 13-yearold from Port Elizabeth said.

The poster was selected by Thys Cilliers and a team of staff members of the NMMU Department of Fine Arts, Graphic Design, for its originality, artistic merit and portrayal of the contest theme, “Imagine Peace”. Strydom’s poster will now advance through the multiple district and international levels of the competition.

French trip for Theodor Herzl learners THREE Port Elizabeth schoolgirls recently had the opportunity of enriching their French lessons by speaking the language with locals and soaking up the culture in the beautiful European land itself. Theodor Herzl High School pupils Jessica Mandel, Sameera Scharneck and Lisa Kannemeyer, all aged 14 and in Grade 9, were amongst a group of 15 students from around the country to tour to France recently. The party spent 10 days of the July holidays attending a language course in Paris, in order to further their French studies, as well as touring further south to visit Nice and Monaco. The three have already decided that French will be one of their matric subjects. “We are all passionate about the language. It’s one of the most widely spoken languages, in Africa as well as other parts of the world, and the culture is gorgeous!” they all agreed.

The stars come out at night FORMULA 1 leaves the European continent and moves on to the pulsating nightlife of Singapore and the Marina Bay circuit for the fourteenth race of the 2012 season. A two-week gap is all that separates the Italian and Singapore Grand Prix but the two racing tracks couldn’t be more different. As one of the oldest circuits on the calendar, the emphasis at Monza is centred on engine power and low downforce. Two weeks on in Singapore, the set-up dangles dramatically off the other end of the scale. A diminished dependency on power and high downforce set-up is the order of the day. The abrasive normal streets that make up the layout of the Singapore track this weekend have prompted Pirelli to make the soft and super-soft compounds available. The Marina Bay circuit’s 23 corners are spread throughout just over 5km of track. Ten of those corners are packed into the third sector, making this one of the busiest tracks on the calendar with the second lowest average speed of the season. The drivers will make an estimated fivethousand gear changes throughout the race, taking more than one-hundred seconds to complete a lap. It is difficult to overtake at any street circuit and although KERS and DRS play their parts in aiding overtaking, qualifying is still vitally important. A good position at the end of the 61 lap race may not necessarily come down to which grid slot is secured on Saturday but starting higher up the grid certainly

For 26 years the neurosurgeon from Liverpool not only served as the FIA’s medical delegate but also introduced countless innovations such as the correct extraction techniques for drivers following an accident and broader seatbelts to reduce chest injuries, to name a few. He saved the lives of many well-known F 1 drivers, such as Gerhard Berger, Mika Hakkinen, Rubens Bari-chello and Nigel Mansell, and attended to the fatal accidents of Gilles Villeneuve and Ayrton Senna, with whom Prof. shared a great personal friendship. Throughout the 2000s and to date there has been no death in F1 and Prof. Sid Watkins played a major part in making this a reality.

Over 1 000 participants opened their hearts to charity with each raising a minimum of R100 for the nominated charities as they entered the second Urban Run in the city which enjoyed a 300% increase in entries. Tackling the city in near perfect weather on Sunday morning from the Donkin Reserve, all that lay between the participants and the Donkin finish line were 17 fun and exciting urban obstacles sponsored by local companies. Hosted by the Mandela Bay Development Agency, the Herald Urban Run afforded participants the experience of witnessing the city’s award-winning urban renewal in a very unique manner. Ditta Salman of KPMG won the Philanthropist award at the event, having raised a staggering R6 500 for the Urban Run charities, whilst Elre Fredericks also received a special mention after having raised R5 001. PE paddlers head for Rome

Top Port Elizabeth junior paddler, Jordan Zeelie, sets off to the ICF World Canoe Marathon Championships in Rome this week where he will compete against 69 other countries in both the K1 and K2 marathon events. Zeelie has been selected for the National team as one of their top junior paddlers (18 years and under) and is joined by PE team mate and former world age group champion Hilda Lapere. Zeelie, a matric pupil at Grey High School, has managed to increase his training substantially between studies since his selection into the National team and is aiming at a top 5 finish thanks to the support from local companies who have ensured that his dream of competing for South African overseas will be realised. Carbonology Sport provides all his paddling requirements and craft with financial assistance for this trip coming from the Wicked Liquid Adventure Clothing Brand, Bluewater Power Boat and Canoe Club, CellC and Engler Oillness.

BETTIE GILIOMEE IF more car buyers took the time to look around at the newer brands on our roads, such as Suzuki, I would be surprised if there weren’t more Suzuki Swifts on the road. In my book the perky performance of

the Suzuki Swift and features that one would find only in more expensive cars, is sure to give its competitors a run for their money. The new Suzuki Swift is a well-packaged car in looks and features that represents great value thanks to its very attractive pricing.

Interior

Let’s start with the bad news - as the rest is all good. I was quite disappointed

by the boot space. You might be able to fit two bags of groceries in, but then the kids must keep their suitcases and togbags with them. The boot does, however, have some good features, such as the false floor. One can use it to hide things from those with bad intentions or one can remove it to increase the height of the packing space. The back seats can also be folded down for more space. Despite the dashboard being a bit too plasticky, its design and practical layout makes up for that. And there are more than enough cupholders and storage spaces for the modern family.

Features

One of the Swift’s best standard features is keyless entry in the GLS models. Keyless Go means the car is switched on and off with a stop/start button. This is a feature often only

Here’s how to turn it round, Heyneke MEET the “Might-have-Beens”. They’re also known on the rugby field as the Springboks, who with more goal-kicking accuracy and better option taking with the ball in hand might have been sitting pretty in the Four Nations championship after last weekend’s match in Dunedin. Facing the auld enemy, the All Blacks, it truly was a game for the taking. Let’s not count the 56m monster that Francois Steyn missed – wasn’t it close though? – the Boks in an otherwise much improved performance, squandered no fewer than six opportunities to score with the boot and two chances to score tries. It’s very hard in rugby to produce the perfect game. But that’s the objective and that little lot adds up to 28 points. If you have a self-recording TV, go back and check. You will see them all. The All Blacks on the other hand mostly took full advantage of their opportunities – and deservedly won 2111. It so easily might have been the other way round. Not the score, of course, but the result. Interestingly, some say it was a sub-standard performance by New Zealand. That’s a maybe – always remember you only play as well as your opponents allow. Let’s look on the bright side. It is possible, you know, to turn the “Might-have-Beens” into the “Real Deal”. It’s quite legal these days to have a name change. In this case all that needs to be done – as all the uncles and aunties who love rugby have repeatedly been pointing out of late – is to persuade head honcho, Heyneke Meyer, to stop being so stubborn and make a

few changes. Really, what does he have to lose? Two home games are looming and winning both would make a great deal of difference to the final look of the Four Nations championship league table. Firstly, promote young Johan Goosen to the starting line-up and drop Morne Steyn to the bench. The Bulls playmaker is simply not doing the job for the Boks. The strain of trying to live up to expectation is presently proving too much for him. His usually immaculate goalkicking has deserted him, and the old-fashioned style of hanging so deeply, so to speak, “in the pocket” is not helping his backs get off their marks. If Meyer promotes Goosen, why not go the whole hog and promote Pat Lambie at fullback as well? Again what has he got to lose? Both Steyn and Zane Kirchner will provide cover from the bench. If the youngsters don’t come off both players he can restore them to the team from the bench. There is very little otherwise that was wrong with the Springbok game plan – some of it, to use that overworked adjective, was, well, almost awesome. Though Meyer no doubt will want to restore Eben Etzebeth to lock after his two-week suspension, and he might consider his best option would be to pair him with Andries Bekker in the second row. Marcel Coetzee is another who could return to the starting line-up; could the coach explain as well his reason for taking the “Beast” off the park? Finally, Heyneke, what the hell? Be brave – take a chance!

Run, braai and birthday bash at beach for Heritage Day A BREAKFAST Braai, 5km Road Race, an Amazing Race and a birthday bash at the beachfront are all the elements on the menu for Heritage Day, in conjunction with the Algoa Bus Heritage Day 5km run at King’s Beach. The Run, organised by PEAAC, is held in collaboration with Bay TV and NMB Tourism. It will start at King’s Beach at 7.15am and has a cut-off time of 1hour and 15 minutes. In keeping with Heritage Day, which is also National Braai Day, the first 600 finishers will each receive a medal and a free boerewors roll. For those who would rather compete on a different level, the organisers are also holding their first ever breakfast braai competition to coincide with the run. Teams will compete for R4 000 worth of prizes sponsored by Algoa Bus. The competition categories are for the best homemade hamburger patties and the best breakfast salad. To add even more excitement NMB Tourism is also holding an Amazing Race which shares the starting point for the 5km Run but kicks off a 9am. This day-long event includes Uitenhage and Schoenmakerskop. Then the action moves to Happy Valley for Bay TV’s first birthday which will be celebrated from 11am with a packed programme of free entertainment. Those who take part in all three events, i.e. the 5km Run, the Amazing Race and the Birthday Bash, qualify to win a trip on a party bus sponsored by Algoa Bus. Schools can win a cash prize of R1 000 for the school with the most bulk entries, provided that a minimum number of 50 chil-

dren enter. BayFM will also be doing a live broadcast from King’s Beach Lifesaving Club during the braai competition.
