NMMU, tech company take maths and science to scholars REPORTER SOUTH African tech company, Future Mobile Technology (FMT), has teamed up with the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Govan Mbeki Maths Unit to develop and market the technology needed in the drive towards better results in maths and science. The result of this partnership is the netsurfer® SCHOLAR, a tablet developed by FMT that comes embedded with 183 hours of preloaded CAPS aligned maths and science educational content developed by the NMMU’s Govan Mbeki Maths Development Unit. FMT joint CEO, Tracy Andersson, said embedding the content on one of their netsurfer® tablets means students in remote areas or lower LSM households without broadband at home don’t need to go online in order to access the learning materials. Graham Davies, joint CEO of FMT, said the company believes in harnessing for the collective good the talents of public and private sectors. “The university had spent five years developing this fantastic content and because they rely on grant funds and aid from blue chips or NGO’s to make it available to learners and teachers, it was limited in scale and was only benefiting a select few. “Our public private partnership with the NMMU is a first of its kind in South Africa. We approached the NMMU with our commercial model that ensures its continued success and that it is both scalable and sustainable. Profits are re-invested to ensure that content is kept up to date, functionality is continuously improved and it is available on a national scale,” said Davies. Professor Werner Olivier, head of the Govan Mbeki Mathematics Development Unit at the NMMU, said partnerships between private and public sectors “can play a pivotal role to ensure that potential educational benefits

US writer chooses Bay as testing ground for new book REPORTER A NEW media writer from the United States of America with over 30 works of electronic literature published, has returned to Port Elizabeth to work on her new project developing a new series of books based on coded letters, called the Rose language. Deena Larsen from Colorado, who visited the city in 2011, said she decided to return to the city because her time in PE was so enjoyable. “This is truly the friendly city,” she said. “I have travelled all over the world and spent time in many different countries. But nowhere else have I found people so ready to smile.” Larsen said, “The Rose language is an entirely revolutionary way of looking at the world.

I started to develop the code when I was in high school, as a way of hiding my thoughts. But then of course, over the years, the complexities grew. “For example, ‘I’ no longer means simply I as a person, but can mean I as introverted, looking inward, or extroverted, looking outward.” Larsen said Art and IT students, under the guidance of Jeni Mc Gra of the Department of Art at Victoria Park High School, gathered together to illustrate these concepts for the first book in the proposed series: a journal to explain the concepts and to invite readers to engage with the world in new and different ways. Larsen is also collaborating with Port Elizabeth writer, Christina Engela, to translate this journal into Afrikaans; working with The Dis-

tillery Studio to record a 200-page book written in these coded letters. Larsen, a new media writer, since before the internet, has some of her works such as Samplers (Eastgate Systems 1993) as required reading in universities and high schools throughout the world. Her first work, Marble Springs (Eastgate Systems 1991), is about women in a gold rush town in Colorado. She spent the summer of 2011 in Port Elizabeth re-working this work, which was originally in HyperCard, an ancient computer language, into a wiki. Clarendon wins blood donation challenge

CLARENDON Park Primary School achieved their personal best in the annual Adopt-a-Month Blood Donation Challenge in November and was also the overall winner of this challenge that is held for primary schools. Clarendon Park encouraged 581 people to donate blood and achieved an overall participation of 62%. Of these, 13% were first time donors and 28% were lapsed donors. SANBS Public Relations Practitioner, Maryke Harris, said since the introduction of this challenge, 2013 is the year where most units were collected, an indication that this concept still has a lot to offer blood centres. “The performance of all the schools assisted SANBS to collect almost 4 000 units of blood during 2013 and at the same time, a culture of blood donation is created, through reaching out to learners from a very young age,” she added.

Kian Schellingerhout het ’n groot bydrae gelewer met hierdie prestasie aangesien hy 11 bloedskenkers gewerf het vir Graad 2B. Kian is as die algehele wenleerder aangewys.

Penguin rescue centre goes green to keep doors open REPORTER THE Port Elizabeth based centre taking care of sick and injured African Penguins is in a critical situation due to high running costs. SOUTH African Marine Rehabilitation and Education Centre (SAMREC) which opened its doors in September 2009 is trying to overcome the daily electricity consumption which is extremely high, by “going green” through the installation of solar panels. The SAMREC Centre has proved to be an exciting and attractive tourist attraction, recently being named the top tourist attraction in Port Elizabeth by the popular Trip Advisor website. Since the doors first opened, it has developed into so much more with the “SAMREC sea school” that plays a pivotal role with a number of education programmes to schools, clubs and other institutions in the region. SAMREC Sea school teachers also visit both rural and urban schools and use a wide variety of apparatus to ex-

pose children (who might not otherwise ever learn about the Ocean) and their teachers to a virtual marine setting. The islands of Algoa Bay, just off the coast of Port Elizabeth is home to 35 of the 91 recorded Southern African seabird species, of which six of the 14 resident species breed in this area. Approximately half of the world’s population of Cape gannets and the endangered African penguin live here. It is expected, that at the current rate of decline in the population, the African penguin may disappear in less than 5 years time. It costs approximately R1000 to rehabilitate a single bird after incidental oiling. Approximately 120 solar panel kits are needed to go of the electricity grid completely and this will enable the centre to be self sufficient. SAMREC is therefore starting a “go green” campaign which allows companies and individuals to sponsor solar panels kits valued at R5000 per kit in exchange for various marketing opportunities. Libby Sharwood of SAMREC advised, “Our monthly electricity account is astronomical and probably equal to that of six households together. We would appreciate

any offer, advice or sponsorships from any person or company that would like to see us sustain the important work done by SAMREC.” As per SAMREC since their rehabilitation efforts started many birds, especially the endangered African Penguin, have been successfully rescued, treated and returned to the wild. The motivation to create the centre came from the knowledge that the good health of the Oceans and its resident creatures are vital to the sustainability of the planet. Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism is assisting to support SAMREC to lobby for funds and support to keep the doors of this valuable facility and tourist attraction open. Whjle a good breakfast is the most important meal of the day and will always be, it is also important to pack healthy lunchboxes for your children. Wholewheat sandwiches or rolls with a filling and fruit to accompany and a pure fruit juice adds to a healthy lifestyle and great eating habits. Mary Holroyd, founder and Chairman of Weigh-Less, gave the following tips on packing a healthy lunchbox for children. • Learn what your children like to eat and use this knowledge to your advantage. They tend to chop and change when it comes to foods they like, so make sure you keep talking to them about foods they like and dislike. • Leftovers - If there is a healthy meal that you know your children like, make extra and separate into lunch sized portions for the week. It will also be a nice break from the same old sandwich. • Wraps – another way to break away from the traditional sandwich is to take their favourite filling and put it in a wholewheat wrap instead. • Keep it simple – kids don’t need a feast, just something to fill them up and keep their energy levels high; if there are too many choices, most of it will end up in the bin. • Variety isn’t everything; most kids like consistency so don’t feel bad if you feel like you are packing the same lunches all the time.

Retired gynae loans prized artwork to hospital LIZEKA TANDWA RETIRED gynaecologist Dr Andre Kriel, has permanently loaned his valuable collection of mother and child paintings to the maternity and labour ward at Life St Georges Hospital. Dr Kriel said he decided to loan his collection of over 26 paintings, which he has been collecting for the past 16 years, to the hospital because it has become like a second home to him over the years. “I had collected so many paintings that I did not have enough space in my house and

because I have worked here at St Georges since 1981 it felt like my second home,” he said. Kriel said most of the art works were by local artists. “I can’t really say how much all the paintings are worth because I have never asked a curator to value them,” he said. Life St George’s Hospital Unit Manager at the Maternity and Labour ward, Pauline Kieck, said they were honoured and appreciative to have received the art displayed in their reception area. “It came as huge suprise to me. We love the art and the patients are also appreciative of our new and attractive decor,” said Kieck.

Talking Schumacher SINCE the 29th of December the Formula 1 world has been holding its collective breath as Michael Schumacher remains in an induced coma following a skiing accident in the French Alps. Initial reports on the Sunday afternoon suggested that the former F1 driver was merely shaken and had sustained no serious injuries. However, mere hours later it came to light that the seven-times champion had suffered severe head injuries and was fighting for his life. Since the news broke of Schumacher’s condition, a bevy of well wishes has steadily streamed in for the Formula 1 legend. David Coulthard wrote in an article for the UK’s Daily Telegraph, “He [Schumacher] was a ruthless competitor but at the same time he was a family man; generous, kind… [W]e did not always see eye to eye but there were two sides to Michael.” Like many others around the world Coulthard expressed his hope that Schumacher would emerge victorious from this battle so he can realise “in what esteem he is held.” The Ferrari team, with which Schumacher won five of his seven world titles, planned a special event for his 45th birthday. The

team called on fans to turn up in a silent tribute, wearing red, at the Grenoble University Hospital Centre. Schumacher’s long-time manager, Sabine Kehm, has implored the public and media to accept comment only from the hospital or herself. “Michael’s condition remains critical but stable,” said Kehm’s statement. “We would like to clearly stress that any information regarding Michael’s health not coming from the doctors treating him or from his management must be treated as invalid and pure speculation. Updates on his condition have revealed that Schumacher has undergone two surgeries and remains in a “critical but stable” condition. On a personal note I have admired Schumi’s staggering achievements in Formula 1 with a sense of astonishment and awe. As Murray Walker announced victory after victory for the unbeatable German every other Sunday on my television screen I doubted that anyone could surpass seven world titles and ninety-one race victories. Like many, I would watch ‘MSC’ dominate the timing sheets and with devastating precision destroy his so-called competitors. I

wondered if he would ever stop winning, if he was beatable. In hindsight this was an unrealistic thought but in the thick of the 2004 season, on the cusp of title number seven, he was invincible. His comeback with Mercedes in 2010 didn’t deliver the same prolific results as his first Formula 1 career but it didn’t detract from his legacy either. I might have been frustrated at his less than spectacular results but his time at Mercedes was invaluable because it revealed a more humane side to the all-conquering racing machine we had seen, and thought we knew, in his first career. I have read about Jim Clark and Jackie Stewart and Niki Lauda. I have seen footage of Ayrton Senna and Alain Prost and watched documentaries on many of the legend’s careers. But Michael Schumacher was the first thing I ever really knew about Formula 1 Racing. His trademark leap on the top step of the podium is ingrained in my memory along with a respect and appreciation that is difficult to quantify. Why do I care about a German who drove racing cars? Because his name is Michael Schumacher.

90th River Mile coming up MICHAEL ZOETMULDER THE 90th SPAR River Mile takes place next month and a festival of sporting events and activities is being planned over the weekend of February 15-16 on the Sundays River. Started in 1924 in the picturesque village of Redhouse between Port Elizabeth and Uitenhage, the River Mile is Africa’s oldest open water swimming event, plus one of the oldest 5 swimming races in the world, and has become one of those ‘must-do’ events in the Eastern Cape. Since 2006 the attendance at the River Mile has increased threefold and this is largely as a result of SPAR Eastern Cape’s involvement as the naming partner with 2014 being their 15th year of association with the event. Key partners to SPAR for the festival are ADT, aQuellé, Cerebos, Istream brand management, Tavcor and Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. “Amazingly the countdown has begun for the 90th River Mile – it feels like only yesterday since SPAR hosted the 2013 event!” said SPAR Eastern Cape Marketing Manager Abri Swart. “On February 15-16 the event takes place at the Sunday’s River and looking back at previous events, we expect a jam-packed venue again at the Festival with loads of exciting activities for the whole family. This event is all about spending quality time together with your family, so we look forward to seeing you there,” said Swart. The festival of activities kicks off with OffRoad Saturday which sees the Tavcor Volkswagen Family 5km Fun Run, a off-road cycle race, a family half-mile and the disabled and wetsuit mile events. The River Mile “Triathlon” will comprise

the 5km Fun run, the cycle and the family halfmile with overall positions being determined by the accumulation of your race positions across all 3 events which are held separately. Sunday’s programme sees the Kids Across the River Races for those children not doing the Mile event and who are 12 years and over. There will also be a Kids Across the River Race for those children with special needs, an initiative started by local Paralympic legend, Kevin Paul, and his parents. The SPAR Ladies’ Mile will take place at 1.30pm on the Sunday followed by the SPAR Men’s Mile at 2.30pm and the final prize giving ceremony for the weekend. This festival out at Cannonville includes many vendors and craft stalls, together with the Crickley Dairy Rotary Kids Zone and the Castle Lite Beer Garden. Entertainment over the weekend includes Port Elizabeth musician and comedian Gino Fabbri of Centerstage. Festival entry is just R20 per person with children under the age of 10 years free and participants wearing their race day wrist bands also free. Strictly no pets or alcohol will be permitted into the festival area over the weekend. Early bird entries are now open on www.rivermile.co.za with all early bird Mile entrants receiving a complimentary 90th anniversary t-shirt. The first 1 000 swim (across all swimming events) entrants will each receive a 90th anniversary silicone swim cap. Cycle tour scales new heights REPORTER The Herald VW Cycle Tour will offer something new for participants and spectators alike when the 106km Classic rolls out from Hobie Beach on February 2. Organisers have introduced the new Lake Farm climb in favour of the traditional 5K Hill, which will also be the site of a dedicated spectator zone. Road race director, Julie Briggs, said the viewing point would bring the public much closer to the action. The public will be able to access the clearly marked spectator zone from Kragga Kamma Road.
