Scamsters now even target pet lovers TINNEKE GOEDHALS EVEN pets are now being used for internet scams. A woman from Klerksdorp lost more than R4 000 when she wanted to buy a Sphynx kitten through a pet scam that is allegedly being run out of PE. Despite the fact that she thought she had done her homework well enough, she still fell victim to an internet scam. She has opened a case with the police. The victim, Zeldean Ellis, says she searched the internet for Sphynx kittens and saw an advertisement on a popular website of a person in Port Elizabeth who would have “pet couriers deliver the baby Sphynx to your doorstep”. “I started corresponding with the woman

via email and she even supplied me with a copy of her husband’s ID document when I became a bit suspicious. I googled the physical address of the pet courier and it showed on google maps as the actual place of business,” said Zeldean. She had to deposit R1 000 and send proof of payment to the seller in order for them to finalise the registration thereof. The other R1 000 had to be paid upon delivery of the kitten. “Everything went well until the stage when I received an email from the pet courier, confirming that he had received the kitten and I now had to fully pay upfront R3 400 for a socalled carrier to place the kitten in for the air cargo. “I even explained to the guy that I was prepared to pay him more if I could pay it upon

delivery of the kitten and he did not want to accept it. The amount was R3 400 and then they would have refunded R3 200 in cash with the delivery of the kitten.” She said they were so excited about the kitten and had been struggling for so long to get a female kitten that against her better judgement she paid the R3 400. The scamsters supplied her with a flight number and the kitten was supposed to arrive that same evening, but nothing came of it. “Throughout the entire process I was speaking to the people telephonically confirming it every step of the way. With every enquiry they would tell me they would phone me back in a few minutes and then they never did. “Unfortunately I lost the entire R4 400 and I am very sure they have cheated a whole bunch of people out of their money.”

Clarification on charging of electricity in the Metro THE PE Express have received numerous calls from readers about the new electricity tariffs since the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro Municipality implemented on July 1 the Inclining Block Tariffs (IBT) system in charging their domestic users for electricity. Silver Falcon pilot to perform in former hometown BETTIE GILIOMEE THE skies above the Bay are set to be filled with the thundering sounds of many magnificent aircraft preparing for the Master Power Technologies PE Air Show on Saturday. One of the biggest attractions is the SAAF Silver Falcons who will entertain the crowds at the Algoa Flying Club next to the Port Elizabeth International Airport. It will be a very special performance for at least one of the Silver Falcons, Maj. Werner Vermaak, who is Falcon 2. Vermaak, also known as “Cruncher”, was born in Port Elizabeth and matriculated at Framesby High School in 1997. He also studied for a Bachelor of Commerce degree in Computer Science at the former University of Port Elizabeth before he joined the SAAF. He was selected to fly as part of the Silver Falcons’ team in February this year. Among the aircraft taking part will be a Hawk from the South African Air Force, as well as the Silver Falcons, who will do a fly-pass with a 737 freighter airplane before doing their own aerobatics display. Community Wellness Day at Central church THE Holy Trinity Church in Central invites the public to its health and community development wellness day programme on Thursday, October 25. The programme includes testing for diabetes, high blood pressure and Voluntary Counselling and Testing (VCT) for HIV Aids. Spiritual counselling will also be available. What started out on an on-and-off basis in 2010, this programme has now been running on a constant basis since August 2012 and takes place on the last Thursday of each month. The Foundation for Professional Development, a Non-Profit Organisation that promotes good health among mainly students in

FET Colleges (eg PE Colleges) has partnered with the church to host these days. “The programme started as a way to encourage people in and around Central to attend these vital tests in a religious environment without the stigma that could be attached to having tests done at the clinic with a motive of complementing the work of the clinics to which tested people are referred to depending on the test results,” said Andrew who is from the Holy Trinity Church advice office. FPD will do VCT testing and other tests will be done by the Ross Street Clinic staff. The programme starts at 9am and ends at 3pm. High tea for Give a Little Love THE ‘Give a Little Love’ Project is hosting a high tea in aid of the House of Resurrection which is situated in Sanctor Port Elizabeth. The Project’s team members are all employees of Value Logistics, who have been offered the opportunity by the company to further their tertiary education through a NQF Level Generic Management course. Team members Tania Yon, Griffith Coollen, Siyabonga Dlanga, Vuyisile Sana, Mariska Dorfling,

Mariaan Verhoog, Ruaul de Ridder and Clint Tessner were educated in dreaded disease and as a group they decided to make a difference in the community. All funds raised through the high tea, which will be held on November 3 from 2pm to 5pm at Palm Villas in Greenbushes, will be donated to the House of Resurrection for current renovations at the centre. “The objective of the high-tea is to raise enough money through this project to make a substantial finan-

cial contribution to the Haven and to show these children that no matter what their status is they are cared for,” said team member Tania Yon. They would also like to spread awareness on HIV/AIDS and how it infects and affects individuals and the community – especially little children that are orphaned. Tickets cost R100. Look Good Feel Better (LGFB), Gary Rom (LGFB Ambassador) and L’Oréal South Africa have teamed up to launch a novel wig donation drive that allows members of the public to support women receiving cancer treatment in a fun and different way. A national initiative themed ‘Show you care by giving locks of hair’, calls on all South Africans to donate new or used wigs that LGFB can offer to cancer patients as part of its fundraising activities. “It’s Breast Cancer Awareness Month and we wanted to do something a little different that not only draws attention to female cancers and the journey women face in fighting the disease, but that also allows the public to contribute to this cause in some way. “We believe our wig donation drive offers all that, and would really love people to get involved and support it,” said LGFB Programme Director, Margaret Hewson. LGFB is dedicated to helping women undergoing active cancer treatment overcome the distressing appearance-related side effects of their treatment. It aims to improve their selfesteem, self-confidence and quality of life through beauty workshops that teach them how to make the best of their appearance. L’Oréal is a founding member of the programme and has actively supported it since its launch in 2005 by providing skincare and cosmetic products to be used in the workshops. It extended that support earlier this year when it assisted with the launch of a new leg of the programme – one dedicated specifically to hair and hair alternatives. “Hair plays such a vital role in a woman’s sense of self-image and its loss is a visible sideeffect of cancer treatment. It was with this in mind that the new programme component was launched – of which our wig donation drive is the first initiative. “The drive provides a great opportunity for people to easily make a difference in these women’s lives, and as such we’d like to run it on an ongoing basis,” added L’Oréal Professional Products General Manager, Jane Maclaren-Taylor. Port Elizabeth residents can drop their wigs off at Auscor, 28 Pickering Street, Newton Park, Port Elizabeth (Garth Austin). Dropoffs can only be done on Fridays between 9am and 1pm.

NMMU student wins top design contest

PE EXPRESS REPORTER A final-year interior design student from Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University has taken national honours in the country’s top student design competition. Anke de Wit’s response to a brief on an “escape space” saw her take top spot in the PG Bison 1.618 competition, beating entries from all other South African universities offering architecture and interior design. “We are immensely proud of Anke’s achievement. It highlights the standards and talent of our students,” said Interior Design lecturer Lené Smit who will accompany her student to the Milan

Furniture Fair in 2013 as part of her prize. De Wit based her design on mushrooms which pop up overnight after a healthy amount of rain. She incorporated a lookout point from a mushroom’s perspective – from the ground upwards. Her “escape space” integrated nature, different perspectives and various activities such as stargazing and bungy jumping from the mushroom structure against a cliff. “I am overwhelmed. After I saw the other students’ entries, I did not think that I stood a chance,” she said. De Wit follows in the footsteps of NMMU architecture student Eduard van Niekerk, with Andrew Palframan as lecturer, who won the same competition in 2008.

PE EXPRESS REPORTER The Eastern Cape junior Children’s Choir (ECjCC) under the leadership of Hanlie Young, will be holding auditions for the 2013 choir year on Saturday, November 3, at Summerwood Primary School. Children from all parts of the Nelson Mandela Metropole and surrounding towns who will be in Grade 1, 2, 3 or 4 in 2013, are welcome to audition. Very young prospective choir members are invited to bring their own teddies along in order to meet Bamba, the official ECjCC choir teddy bear. The ECjCC practises once a week, on Wednesdays from 3.45pm to 5.30pm at Cillié High School, their sponsored rehearsal venue. The ECjCC this year presented the annual Prestige Concert of the Eastern Cape Children’s and Youth Choirs on September 14 (with guest choir the South Cape Children’s Choir) as well as the annual Bamba Festival for junior school choirs in June. There are several performances left for 2012. The choir will still perform at the Walton Park Retirement Village on October 24, at Parkheuwel Dutch Reformed Church on November 11 and on November 18 at the National Show Jumping at the Equestrian Club, Lorraine. Kitchen Maestros sharpen their knives THE heat is on for Port Elizabeth’s amateur chefs competing to become WalmerPark’sfirstKitchenMaestro. The first of the five-weekly live cook-offs was held last Saturday and will continue every Saturday from 10am to 12pm in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre Promotions Court until and including November 17. Every Saturday five entrants will compete against each other. Cooking away the first spot in the semi-finals last Saturday, were Liza Vermaak of Charlo. The entrants had to prepare thyme-studded Kingklip with Hollandaise and Sautéed Mushroom, Leek and Fine Beans according to a recipe provided by Dewald Hurter of Chez Patrick restaurant in Port St Francis. The contestants also had to include a mystery ingredient chosen from several ingredients provided. Dewald is the Chef for Kitchen Maestro and will be preparing all the menus for the contestants, as well as doing live demonstrations of the dishes on the days of the cook-offs in the Walmer Park Shopping Centre. Each contestant will be provided withtherecipeandalltheingredients with which to prepare the dish selected and demonstrated by Chef Dewald, at their own individual work stations. The contestants will then be required to prepare the dish themselves within a specified time period. Local celebrity foodie and chef, Charl Leslie from Algoa FM, will compere the events.

How to enter:

Every week the ingredients of the “cooking pot” change. These ingredients will be revealed on Algoa FM

and printed in the PE Express every Wednesday during the cook-offs.

This week (Round 3) the entry recipe must include: Beef Egg noodles Spring onion Spinach Lemon

Entrants will have to use these ingredients in a recipe and provide the recipe and a photograph of their completed dish, as well as a short story on why they love cooking and why they entered for the competition. The deadline for this week’s entries is next week Wednesday at 12pm. Five contestants will be selected from all the entries received during each week to participate in a live cook-off to be held at Walmer Park the following Saturday. Each week a winner will be chosen to go through to the semi-final cook-off to be held on November 24 , where the contestants will compete for one of two places in the Kitchen Maestro final. Entry is open to any amateur ‘Chef’, over the age of 16. Entry forms will be available at the Walmer Park Info kiosk, as well as from their website at www.walmerparkshoppingcentre.com. Kitchen Maestro’s first cook-off recipe ON Saturday during the first cook-off for Walmer Park’s Kitchen Maestro competition the contestants had to prepare thyme-studded Kingklip with Hollandaise sauce and sautéed mushrooms, leeks and fine beans according to a recipe provided by the competition’s chef, Dewald Hurter. The contestants also had to include a mystery ingredient chosen from several ingredients provided. It was, however, the tricky Hollandaise sauce that bowled at least three of the five contes-tants out. Here is the recipe for readers who would like to try it at home.

Kingklip 200g Kingklip cut thick Thyme sprigs Canola oil Blob of butter Lemon

Hollandaise 180g butter Thyme 3 egg yolks 1 tbsp. water Lemon juice Salt White pepper

Kingklip method

1. Make criss-cross cuts on the top of the Kingklip. At every cross punch a small hole with a sosatie skewer and stud with a thyme bud. Season Kingklip with salt and pepper. 2. Over moderate heat fry Kingklip in canola oil studded side first. Then turn over and cook through from the bottom. 3. Finish with a squeeze of lemon and by melting a small blob of butter over fish.

Hollandaise method

1. Cut the butter into pieces and melt over low heat. Add the thyme to infuse. 2. Half fill a saucepan with water. Bring to the boil then remove from heat. 3. Put the egg yolks with a tablespoon of water in a bowl over the pan of hot water and whisk for 2 to 3 minutes until thick. 4. Keep on whisking and drizzle in the strained melted butter, very slowly, whisking continously until sauce is thick. 5. Add lemon juice and season.

Sautéed vegetables

1. Over low heat sauté mushrooms and fine beans in butter. 2. Add a pinch of garlic, lemon zest and leek. Sauté until vegetables are cooked but still firm. 3. Finish with a bit of chopped parsley and seasoning.

St Joseph’s lends Erica D a helping hand LEARNERS from St. Joseph’s Primary School recently joined forces with Craig Duffield of Mosaic Tourism to help the impoverished community, Erica D, on the outskirts of Greenbushes. Duffield launched Mosaic Life as a means by which to better focus on and assist those living in extreme poverty and dire circumstances. “I was pleasantly surprised when I was contacted by St Joseph’s Primary School with the good news that they had clothes to donate that they had collected as part of their MAD (Make a Difference) Initiative at the school,” said Duffield.

St Joseph’s Primary School’s learners set about to make a difference in the lives of this community. They actively collected numerous items of clothing and shoes for all ages, children through to adults. “We are thrilled with the very generous support that St Joseph’s Primary School has given to the people living in this community. Their need is indeed great and for most, the only clothing that they have is that which they wear each day. With the freezing temperatures and torrential rains experienced this winter, many of the homes have been flooded and they have truly struggled to stay warm

and dry. This donation of clothing is a great blessing!” Erica D consists of 66 shacks, home to approximately 120 people varying in age from just a few months old to the elderly. They live in dire conditions where many of the shacks are not truly habitable, and the most basic of human needs such as shelter, food and water are a daily challenge. “The community leader of Erica D, Tae Makina, was visibly overwhelmed by the generosity of the children and families of St Joseph’s Primary School when he met the principal and pupil monitors to receive the donation of clothes,” said Duffield.

Mandi to defend title at World Lifesaving Champs in Oz PE EXPRESS REPORTER They call it the Olympics of Lifesaving where national teams from all over the world will compete for the top 3 positions in beach and sea events. Rescue 2012 will be held in Adelaide Australia from November 6 to 19. Mandi Maritz, 22 year old NMMU student from Port Elizabeth, is one of the 12 SA team members and will be the Beach Specialist to defend her title in beach sprints that she won at the previous World Rescue Championships held in Egypt. She also won a bronze medal for Beach Flags but this time she’s going for gold. Mandi started with lifesaving at the age of 10 when she joined Bluewater Bay Nippers and moved to Summerstrand for her senior training and voluntary duties where she is now an honorary life member. She will, however, compete for Durban Surf at the Rescue 2012 Inter Club competition as they entered a team and asked her to compete for them. Mandi, who is ranked number one in the world, is on top form for this upcoming World Rescue Competition and trains 2 to 3 times a day to be super fit. Thanks to her sponsor Nutritech – providing her with the right nutrition - she could cope with all the extreme exercise and recover fully after each training session at the Eastern Cape Academy of Sport at NMMU. Mandi’s training sessions not only require gym workouts, but also track and beach training. There were four training camps held in Durban for the SA Team where Mandi competed with the men to test her abilities. The SA team will depart from Johannesburg on November 4 where the National Teams (each Nation has 12 competitors) will compete over two days. In the following days they will go straight into the Inter Clubs’

competition. This competition is open to all the lifesaving clubs all over the world with as many as 500 competitors in each event. This is where their endurance will be tested with a few heat rounds, then semi-finals and with the finals on the last day. Mandi’s goal is to bring back four gold medals. Pearson drama group saves the day for mascot and wins trophy BETTIE GILIOMEE PEARSON High School’s grade 11 drama pupils, not only returned home from the FNB Alexander Playhouse Drama Festival for High Schools with the coveted Festival Trophy and R10 000 for their school, but also with an unexpected mascot – which they picked up en route to East London. According to their drama teacher LindaLouise Swain, who is also a spokesperson for the Animal Anti-cruelty league, the group of 14 pupils and their director Gugu Peteni, set off on their road trip to East London on Thursday, October 11. “Just beyond Nanaga, their first stop was for the rescue of a 4-week-old kitten on the side of the national road. Its sibling had already been killed on the road and the starving and

very cold little soul was quickly adopted by the group as their lucky mascot. And lucky it certainly proved to be!” said Linda-Louise. For the group it was quite fitting that they should be saving a helpless animal while on their way to take part in a drama festival, with their drama teacher being such an avid supporter of helping pets in distress. The group went on to win the coveted Alexander Playhouse Festival Trophy and R10 000 for the school. Their production, Exhibit X, was workshopped and devised by the learners and Linda-Louise. Exhibit X dealt with the “masks” that teenagers wear. The play included the pupils’ own scripted monologues, singing, dancing, choral work and dance drama. They were also afforded the opportunity of a one-on-one workshop with the official adjudicator and initial sponsor of the festival, acclaimed playwright, Deon

Opperman. A total of 21 plays formed part of the initial festival and 8 were selected for the semi-finals which were held at the Guild Theatre in East London. Three finalists took part in the gala evening. Two Port Elizabeth schools, Pearson High School and Collegiate High School, were represented in the finals. In the end Collegiate was placed third, with Hudson Park High School from East London

in second place. Caitlin Wiggill from Collegiate High School, who also takes subject drama with Linda-Louise and Sharon Rother, was awarded the prestigious R35 000 bursary for studies of her choice within South Africa. Caitlin was recently seen as Augusta Gloop in their Charlie and the Chocolate Factory production. More good news is that the kitten has been adopted by the family of one of the group members.

Pet Expo is back!

TANYA VAN ZYL AFTER last year’s “furtastic” response for the first-ever Pet Expo in Port Elizabeth, organisers are now looking forward to hosting an even better expo this year. The Montego Classic PE Pet Expo will this year take place over two days – on 3 and 4 November – at the DF Malherbe High School grounds. The concept for this unique event was born out of a conversation between two local “diehard pet owners and lovers”, Bernadette Meistre and Liza Vermaak. “The target of the expo is to bring together like-minded people and their furry, feathery and/or scaly friends,” said Meistre. Whether it’s a dog, cat, fish, bird or reptile, the expo will provide an opportunity to shop for products for your pet, she added. With a wide variety of pet-related exhibitors – local and national – that will showcase their product and/or service, pet lovers are bound to find what they are looking for. “The one promise we aim to deliver on, is that we exist to give people choices to make their and their pet’s lives better,” Meistre said. She further explained that the expo is where the buyer, seller and product come together. “It is where the customer views, touches and talks. Exhibitors gain insight into customer’s needs and wants.” Local animal shelters were again invited to join the expo at no charge and some organisations have come up with wonderful ideas to generate donations with fun events and competitions for the visitors during the expo. But organisers have decided to reach out even further and support a special cause. “Each year we will focus on a specific project targeting animal well-being. This is when we discovered two ladies from a local suburb taking it upon themselves to make a difference,” Meistre added. P.E.T. Patrol (Protect Every Tail) and SOS (Supporters of Sterilising) are using the Bluewater Bay community as their pilot project. In addition to the many different kinds of exhibitors, there will be fun entertainment and attractions for the whole family. There will be demonstrations with Police dogs, horses, dog jumping and snakes, as well as entertainment for the children and a play zone for dogs. Organisers are also appealing to the public to bring their gently-used pet items which they no longer use or any donations. The expo starts at 9am to 3pm. Travel ‘Back to the 80’s’ with Gillbert and Sullivan Society PE EXPRESS REPORTER PORT Elizabeth is in for a fun-filled 80’s revolution when their amazing cast take to the stage for the PE G&S Society’s end of year show, “Back to the 80’s”. This juke box musical by Australian Neil Gooding is a celebration of the decade that brought us big hair, shoulder pads, Star Wars, Rubiks Cubes and Knight Rider, not to mention some fabulous music that has stood the test of time. Hit songs in “Back to the 80s” include “Walking on Sunshine”, “Kids

in America”, “Let’s Hear it for the Boy”, “I’m Gonna Be (500 Miles)”, “Get Outta My Dreams”, “Footloose”, “Dancin’ on the Ceiling”, “Man in the Mirror”, “Material Girl” and “You Give Love a Bad Name”, all wrapped up with a foot stomping Megamix to close the show. “Back to the 80s” is a classic teenage romance set in the William Ocean High School in 1989 and told by the narrator Corey Palmer as he looks back on his school years and his quest to win the heart of his next door neighbour who, of course, is far more interested in the football star! All the characters are playfully

named in homage to the singers, actors and other pop culture icons of the 80s: for example, Alf Bueller, Tiffany Houston and teachers Mr Cocker and Miss Brannigan. Jazz Studio Lunch Time Concert THE NMMU Department of Music presents a Jazz Studio Lunch Hour Concert featuring the NMMU Big Band today at 1pm in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. The big band has been developed and directed by Jazz Studies Lecturer John Edwards since 2010. All of the members are music students ranging from first to fourth years. The students are representative of the different programmes and music streams that are offered by the music department and several of the instrumentalists intend specializing in classical music but are taking the opportunity to learn some jazz.

There is a particular emphasis on South African jazz repertoire although American jazz standards are also included. Works by Abdullah Ibrahim (Dollar Brand), Pat Matshikiza, Duke Ellington and John Coltrane will be performed. In addition, an arrangement of a Bach minuet will be featured and an original composition by Virgil Matrass. The big band recently performed to a highly appreciative audience at the Vice Chancellor’s Cultural evening. Entrance to the Department of Music’s lunch hour concerts are free. 99% Xhosa Comedy show will have you in stitches

PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE popular 99% Xhosa Comedy does its first and last round for the year promising a sidesplitting laugh-a-minute comedy show on October 26 at the NMMU, 2nd Avenue Campus. The show features two of the strongest local comics in Mbulelo “Manylaughs” Msongelwa and Siyabulela Seya, both from Port Elizabeth. Anele Shube from Mdantsane received a standing ovation at the recent 99% Xhosa Comedy show at the Orient Theatre, East London. He will share the stage with Tsepi-

so Nzayo from Grahamstown who is fresh from his oneman show, Nam Ndiyakwazi, a perfect fit to the 99% Xhosa comedy brand as he performed the whole show in vernacular. He is also a regular guest presenter on Umhlobo Wenene FM’s Iqonga Labatsha with Luks Gidane. Skhumba Hlophe from SABC1’s Mzansi Insider and the silver screen sketch, Taxi Ride, has turned to be somewhat of a favourite in the PE leg of the show. Not only a regular in the 99% Zulu Comedy, Blacks Only and many other big comedy shows nationally, Skhumba runs his own weekly comedy club in his township of Tembisa, Johannesburg, virtually working with all known and unknown comedians in the country. Two other new faces at the PE show are Lwando Mahlakatha and Donovan Goliath who will share their national comedy experience for the first time at the PE leg of the show. However the host for evening will be the comic in every comedy fan’s mouth and the star of the last show, SyaB. Siyabonga Radebe, also known as Sya B in comedy circles, is a prolific stand-up comedian, writer, singer, director and actor who broke into the national television screen through SABC1 drama series, “A place called home” where

he played a popular role as Cassius, and ran from 2006 - 2009. He is also known for his role as Boboza, a troubled musician who commits suicide on e.tv’s Rhythm City in 2010. Other television series he has acted in include the SABC1 drama series, Intersexions; Gugu noAndile, Wild at Heart, and Sokhulu & Partners. He has also had notable roles as Benjy, the on-screen lover of Katlego (played by Lerato Mvelase) in Home Affairs. However the role that shot his popularity to the hearts of millions of South Africans is that of Xolani Mthembu, a “Ben 10” (toy-boy) of MamRuby (Slindile Nodangala), on SA’s most popular soapie Generations. He regularly features in Comedy Central Presents – Live at Parker’s, and is one of the most respected stand-up comedians in the country. He shared many stages with a range of comedians even beyond the SA borders in New York and London. The show starts at 8pm, and tickets are available at Computicket and Shoprite/Checkers for R150. “This show has been in demand and it took us a year to bring it back”, said Monwabisi Grootboom from Wow Entertainment, the Producers of the show. “We’d like to urge people to quickly get their tickets as they are currently selling fast and have opened since last month for booking”.

Johnny Clegg will be joined on stage by a 6-piece band and the audience can expect to hear some of Johnny Clegg’s greatest hits, as well as a couple of songs from his new album “Human” as part of this high-energy, highly entertaining show. Jimny is a 4x4 for real – for women, even BETTIE GILIOMEE A COMPACT 4x4 with hardly any boot space and only three doors are hardly the criteria that women - and moms in particular – would put at the top of their wish list. So learning that the Suzuki Jimny was voted by women as South Africa’s most fancied all-terrainers in the 2009 Women’s Car of the Year Awards, organised by the Women on Wheels motoring supplement, certainly piqued my interest to find out why. Let’s face it, just as women often buy shoes which are not meant for walking, many women prefer an SUV but will hardly ever risk spoiling its good looks by taking it off-road. And this is where the Jimny is different - according to the people at Suzuki, this is a vehicle built for fun – built to be used what it was designed for – going off-road.

Facelift Facelift

The Suzuki Jimny has recently been revamped with a facelift inside and out, which is basically only a cosmetic change. The most obvious improvements are at the front of the Jimny which include a new bonnet, an eye-catching air scoop, new grille and a bolder front bumper – all to give it a more powerful and aggressive look. To emphasize the fact that it is 4x4 for real, the fog lamps are now located in recesses on either

side of the intake which decreases the risk of damage while having fun off the beaten track. On the inside the Jimny boasts redesigned head restraints for both front and rear passengers. The new headrests provide improved comfort and support, and also allow the rear seats to be folded flat without the need to remove the head restraints. From a safety perspective, the latest Jimny now offers ISOFIX child-seat anchor points. This is in addition to various active and passive safety features that it already has, such as ABS anti-lock brakes, dual SRS front airbags, three-point inertia reel seatbelts, and front and rear head restraints. Unchanged is the Jimny’s array of standard comfort and convenience features. These include air-conditioning, remote central locking, electrically operated windows and mirrors, power steering, an FM Stereo/AM receiver with CD frontloader, and an integrated alarm/immobiliser system.

Interior Interior

A negative for people with a family is, however, the fact that it is a threedoor. The front passenger seat can be folded down and moved forward with one easy motion but moving the driver’s seat flat and forward takes some effort.

Ride Ride

The Jimny has a five-speed manual gearbox which takes a bit of muscle to shift, as is the case with most 4x4’s. It is a bit rickety when driving in first, second and third gear, but in fourth it goes very well. This is, however, to be expected for a vehicle with such high ground clearance. I also found that the window was rattling a bit when driving with it open. Now for the good news. Its handling is superb. Its compact size makes it ideal for zipping around town and getting in an out of places your bigger family wagons and SUV’s can’t handle.

It certainly is compact on the inside, but there are enough cupholders for all four occupants. The back space might be a bit limited for two adults. The glove compartment which has both open and closed compartments is very practical. The backseat can also fold down flat in a 50/50 split. Despite the boot space being very limited, I liked the fact that it opens to a flat surface for loading and unloading luggage with ease.

India: Wings or prancing horses? FORMULA 1 racing is the most elite form of motorsport. It maintains this fundamental identity through innovation and near constant re-invention. A few years ago the idea of Formula 1 in India seemed far-fetched. Since then the vibrant country has revealed itself as one completely enamoured of F1 racing. As the India GP makes only its second appearance on the F1 calendar, there isn’t a big frame of reference to determine which of the current crop of racing cars will be suited to the Budhh International circuit. Comparisons can, however, be drawn between this track and that of Korea’s Yeongam circuit. Similarly, the first sector consists of long straights and slow speed corners followed by a high speed second sector and a final sector blotted with slow speed corners. The main difference between the two tracks is that where Korea is relatively flat the Indian track has several elevation changes and a few bumps to contend with. The inaugural Indian GP was hugely successful as teams and drivers lauded the facilities and incredible level of support. There was, however, a slight weakness - overtaking. The lack of genuine overtaking during last year’s Grand Prix has prompted the FIA to introduce a second DRS zone for Sunday’s race. The first DRS zone will run along the start/ finish straight while the second zone will run from turn 3 to turn 4. It has also been confirmed that both DRS zones will have separate detection points. Despite being 5.125 km in length, the circuit has one of the highest average speeds of the entire year. Last year a brandnew track meant that the surface was extremely dusty and not quite settled in to itself but the abrasiveness of the circuit was minimal. It is expected to remain relatively similar in 2012. A temperature in the mid-

thirties is expected for the majority of the weekend which should make an easier job of switching on the tyres; but Pirelli have opted to bring the hard and soft compound to this weekend’s race. Naturally, the soft compound will be the quicker of the two while the real test will be in getting the hard tyre into the optimum working window. Realistically both McLaren drivers are still in the reckoning for the driver’s crown but a sequence of stunning results would have to ensue to get either of them well and truly back into the running. Nevertheless, technical director Paddy Lowe believes that the fight for individual race victories is still wide open. The Woking-based team have continued to push development and slightly shifted their main objective to overhauling Ferrari in the constructor’s title race. “There will be a great determination to get second place and we always like to keep Ferrari behind us. That will be the least we should want to manage out of this season.” Despite Sebastian Vettel’s recent run of victories, Red Bull teamboss Christian Horner insists that the team will not rest on its laurels and simply expect to win either of the two championships. “There is a long way to go; Sebastian is six points in the lead with four (races) to go but his main opponent was only one place away from him on the podium, so we are not thinking about championships yet,” said Horner. Whatever happens, Fernando Alonso and Ferrari will be a significant factor for the remainder of the season. But how, or even if, the Spaniard will be able to challenge the pace of Red Bull is the biggest unknown. The Ferrari remains off the ultimate pace and there is a feeling that the double world champion needs a dynamic moment to change the course of the 2012 season. But what is Formula 1 about if not the unexpected?

This EP Aquatics Series is the only of its kind in the Eastern Province which gives registered swimmers the opportunity to gain Swimming South Africa qualifying times for the SA Nationals in April 2013 and with the 10km marathon swim an Olympic event, the popularity of open water swimming is certainly on the rise. Early indications are that Olympic swimmer Jessica Roux may be attending the Secbands event to swim her first 10km event of the year since competing in London in August. Other events on offer on the morning include the 7.5km, 5km, 3km and 1km distances whilst the children 10 years and under get their heads wet in the kiddies’ bank-to-bank swim. Swimmers need to register only once for the Series to gain their Series number. Those that are keen to swim in the Series but don’t already have a Series number for this season should register online www.ecswim.co.za at just R20. All swimmers report for entry on the morning of the event to indicate which discipline they will be swimming. Separate categories are available for wetsuit and disabled swimmers with medals on offer for the top three swimmers in all categories.

Pat’s no ‘little lamb’ anymore THE words that describe him best are “elegant” and “composure”. And while we’re about it, those self same attributes remind one so much of that other great KZN flyhalf, the late Keith Oxlee. Who are we talking about here? Twenty-one year-old Patrick Lambie, of course – and the stamp of authority he placed so firmly on the Sharks’ 20-3 Currie Cup semifinal victory over the Blue Bulls at King’s Park last weekend. For the second week running the curlytopped former Michaelhouse boy – fast becoming more famous than “Spud” – nabbed the Man of the Match award, and rightly so. If the match had been billed the “Flyhalf Fisticuff to the Finish: Lambie vs Morne Steyn”, the Sharks’ lad would have won it on a knockout. But, whoa there a little – a flyhalf is only as good as the foundation the lads up front lay down for him. And, mostly, the Sharks made a gourmet meal of the Bulls’ forwards. The Durban semi was made no easier by the steady rain that fell almost to the kickoff, turning the pitch into a sticky quagmire. The standard of the rugby in those conditions, with the accent on attack and a surprising amount of slick handling, really was out of the top drawer. Up on the Highveld at Jo’burg’s Ellis Park, in a far more dour display from both sides, Western Province were fractionally the better of the combatants with an almost final minute heart-breaking try by Duane Vermeulen allowing the visitors to snatch a 21-16 victory. Just minutes before it seemed that an Elton Jantjies penalty at 16-14 had seen the Golden Lions through. But that’s sudden-death rugby for you. A Durban home final with the odds slightly in favour of a Sharks feast, but don’t go rushing for a bookmaker. For one thing lineout domination could be crucial. Returning to to the flyhalf debate. If it wasn’t a great day for Steyn in Durban, much the same applied to Jantjies in Jo’burg. What’s the bet though that coach Heyneke Meyer decides to take all three on tour to Europe? Starting November 10 it’s Ireland (Dublin), Nov 17 Scotland (Edinburgh) and Nov 24 England (Twickenham). And the state of rugby’s health elsewhere? It was nice to see Wallabies and All Blacks drawing 18-all in Brisbane. But otherwise things are a little murky here at home – and Oregan Hoskins and his SARU cronies must shoulder the blame. The Cheetahs didn’t muck about. In Bloemfontein they clouted the EP Kings 53-14 in a so-called promotion-relegation match. The second leg in PE comes this Friday and to qualify for the Currie Cup the Kings would need to win and score four tries. It’s not going to happen – yet they are going to play Super Rugby in place of the Cheetahs. Talk about “barmy”, talk about “unfair”. “Off with their heads, the whole lot of the SARU crew,” would be more appropriate. Oh, but the Kings will have a whole lot of classy players in their ranks by then from the Lions and elsewhere. Yes, but the minute it’s over they’ll be rushing home again. So how does that help? How’s it possible that the Lions, reaching a Currie Cup semifinal one year are relegated to the dustbin the next?

Get walking, get healthy with Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk PE EXPRESS REPORTER WALKING is one of the most rewarding forms of exercise. It’s healthy, accessible and cheaper than most other forms of physical activity. The Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk, is the ideal opportunity for people who would like to start walking for exercise get into the habit of putting on those walking shoes and taking to the streets. The Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk takes place at NMMU Cricket Fields on 2nd Avenue, Summerstrand on Saturday, October 27 and will include 4km and 8km walks. This year’s Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk not only aims to enhance and protect lives through physical activity and living a healthier lifestyle, but also to raise awareness of cancer. The aim with this event is to engage PE and surrounding communities and assist them in understanding cancer and provide them with a platform to stand together in the fight against it. Dr Craig Nossel, Discovery’s Head of Vitality Wellness, says regular participation in a physical activity such as walking can halve the risk of cardiovascular disease. “In addition, fit walkers are less likely to fall and suffer injuries such as hip fractures because they develop stronger bones. They are also less likely to sustain injury as their joints have a better range of movement and muscles are more flexible,” he said. Regular walkers are less prone to depression and anxiety, tend to be good sleepers and are better able to control body weight. “Combined with healthy eating, physical activity such as walking is critical to any sustainable weight control plan. In addition, keeping weight within healthy limits can mean a lower risk of type 2 diabetes, heart disease, stroke, cancer, sleep apnea and osteoarthritis,” said Dr Nossel. Dr Nossel recommends a 30-minute walk at least three times a week. “Of course, the more often, the better and the intensity of ‘walking for fitness benefits’ varies according to the age and fitness of the individual, but generally, brisk is better,” he said. “The aim is to walk fast without over-exertion. Do the talk-test. You should just about be

able to hold a conversation while you are walking,” said Dr Nossel. People who are not regular walkers should build up their walking activity over time. If it is initially too difficult to walk for 30 minutes at a time, they should start with regular, small bouts (10 minutes) of walking, three times a day. People who want to lose weight will need to build up to an exercise routine of longer than 30 minutes a day. Nossel says turning ordinary everyday activities in physical activities can also be an effective way of building up fitness levels and assisting with weight loss. “So, why not take the stairs in-

stead of the lift; get off public transport one stop earlier and walk home or to work; do housework such as vacuuming; hot-foot it to the local shop or walk the dog?” he said. Entry fee for the Discovery Algoa FM Big Walk 8km is R35 and R30 for the 4km with an entry fee of R10 for all children under the age of 10 and free entrance for children in prams. Willows Resort Run focuses on core event PE EXPRESS REPORTER ACHILLES Amateur Athletic Association - the organisers of the annual Willows Resort Run - will focus on the 10km and 5km runs on Saturday, November 17. “This event is set apart from other events in the sense that it takes place in the safe confines of the resort with the idyllic setting as a backdrop and its natural environment as the route,” said Herman Nell of Madiba Bay Resorts. The entrance fee for the 10km is R35 starting at 7am, and R20 for the 5km starting at 8.30am. Temporary licences for the 10km event are R25 per person. There is no cost for spectators to enter the resort. Schools that have the most participants must pre-enter to win a R5000 accommodation and facilities voucher courtesy of The Willows Resort. Prize-money has been increased in the 10km for men and ladies. First prize is R1000, second prize is R500 and third prize is R250. Lucky draw prizes include 1 x R1000 cash plus 3 x R500 cash and Willows Resort accommodation prizes. The first 10 finishers in the 10km and 5km events receive gold medals, the next 190 receive silver and all finishers receive a bronze medal. For participants coming from out of town,

or for Port Elizabeth residents who would like to kick start the holidays, The Willows is offering 10% discount on accommodation from the November 16-18. The beneficiary for this event is MTR Smit Children’s Home. These children will be hosted by The Willows as part of their community upliftment plan and MTR Smit will be hosting the tea garden for food and re-

freshments to raise additional funds. Live music, beer garden, tidal pools, super tube and games centre will also be part of the activities.
