IE gewilde Maitlands-strand se parkeergebied is onlangs vir strandgebruikers gesluit nadat ’n gedeelte daarvan deur die see weggekalwe is en tot ’n fratsongeluk gelei het.

Sondag, terwyl die parkeergebied nog oop was, het ’n taxi-bestuurder ’n nare ondervinding beleef toe hy – volgens ’n ooggetuie – anderkant die oorblywende parkeerarea beland het met sy agter-wiele in die lug. Police Matters

Police call on community to help fight crime PE EXPRESS REPORTER THE South African Police Service Port Elizabeth are calling on the community of Nelson Mandela Bay, to stand together and join them in the fight against crime. According to police spokesperson Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg, after crime tendencies were recently analyzed, it was clear that laptops and cell phones are the biggest targets of crime. “It was also apparent that owners of these items treat them with utter disregard and this failure to safeguard is becoming extremely problematic for the South African Police in their fight against property crimes,” said Van Rensburg. “Crimes that have been identified as focusing on these valuable items are theft out of motor vehicles, housebreaking and robberies. In almost 90% of all these crimes reported, laptops and cell phones are being stolen,” said Janse van Rensburg.

Theft out of motor vehicle incidents can be regarded as mostly opportunistic because of the fact that people are leaving these valuables in plain sight in their vehicles. “We can not emphasise enough the importance of keeping your cell phone on your person. Even if you exit your vehicle for a short period of time, your cell phone and/or laptop should not be left in a vehicle to be seen by any passerby or criminal,” she said. The community is encouraged to enquire with the various service providers with regard to security measures available on their devices which can be utilized to trace the cell phone after it has been lost or even misplaced. Proper records should be kept of the serial numbers of all IT equipment and the IMEI number of cell phones must be available to assist the SAPS in the circulation of these stolen items. Upon laying a charge this information must already be on hand. To access the IMEI number you can enter X#06# on your cell phone and the number will be displayed on your screen.

BETTIE GILIOMEE SOUTH Africans will soon have to get used to brand-new bank notes, but apart from the fact that former president Nelson Mandela’s image will now appear on the front of the notes, people will not have to learn new colours, except for the R200 note which could in the past be easily confused with a R20 note. The new series of banknotes issued by the SARB will come into circulation in the latter part of 2012 and while both the current and new banknotes will be in circulation at the same time, the current banknotes will remain legal tender. The South African Reserve Bank has launched a communication campaign to introduce South Africans to the new banknote series. The communication campaign for the launch of the new banknote series is themed “One of a Kind”. It emphasises the fact that each banknote will feature an image of former President Nelson Mandela and will therefore be as unique as Nelson Mandela himself. Each note will have stateof-the-art security, technical and design features. According to a statement by the South African Reserve (SARB) they have according to law, the sole right to issue banknotes. It is international best practice to develop a new banknote series every six to eight years. The SARB, therefore, acts proactively by developing new banknotes to ensure that the country’s money remains among the safest in the world. This is achieved through continually incorporating state-of-the-art security, technical and design features into banknotes in circulation.

GENERAL INFO ABOUT NEW BANKNOTES , The size and denominations of the new banknotes are exactly the same as those of the existing series banknotes , The new banknotes make a unique sound when snapped between one’s fingers.

New banknote design features

, The dominant colours of the new banknotes are the same as those of the current banknotes, with the exception of the new R200 banknote. The colour of the R200 has changed to a yellow-orange to distinguish it from the R20 banknote because the two banknotes in the current series are too similar in colour. , The new series features the image of South Africa’s first democratically elected President, Nelson Mandela, as the main motif on the front of the note. , As with the existing series of banknotes, the new series of banknotes features South Africa’s “Big Five” animals. The difference is that the images are now at the back of the banknotes. These are Rhinoceros (R10), Elephant (R20), Lion (R50), Buffalo R100 and Leopard (R200). , The SA Coat of Arms is featured prominently in the top left-hand corner of all banknotedenominations.Thesymbolisalsovisible in the security thread as a holographic image. , The new banknotes feature translations of the words “South African Reserve Bank” into two official South African languages on each banknote denomination.

, The security features s can be identified using the “look, feel and tilt” approach: LOOK When you hold the new banknote, you should see the following: Watermark:Whenheldtothelight,ashadow image of Nelson Mandela will appear. Animal: When held to the light, the animal on the back will be visible as a seethrough feature on the banknote Micro-printing: The denomination nu-

meral appears in micro-lettering in the animals to the left of the image of former President Nelson Mandela. This feature can only be seen using a magnifying glass. Microprinting also appears on the back. Unique numbering: The unique serial numbers, consisting of letters and numbers, are printed on the back of all new banknotes. A vertical number is on the lefthand side and a horizontal number on the top right. The horizontal number is conical, that is, it grows in height from left to right. FEEL When you touch the new banknote, you should feel the following; RAISED PRINTING: The raised features on the new banknote include the denomination numeral, main motif on the front of the new banknote (image of former President Nelson Mandela), words “South African Reserve Bank”, Coat of Arms and motif on the back of the new banknote. FEATURE FOR THE VISUALLY IMPARED: Raised lines on the bottom left and righthand sides on the front of the new banknotes appear as follows: One raised line: R10, Two raised lines: R20, Three raised lines: R50, Four raised lines: R100 and Five raised lines: R200 TILT When you tilt the new banknote, you should see the following; SECURITY THREAD: The security thread colour will change to the colour of the respective banknote. In the security thread you will also see the number, the Coat of Arms, and the words “SARB” and “Rand”. COLOUR-CHANGING INK: The number on the bottom right of the R10 and R20 is in colour-changing ink, while the R50, R100 and R200 have SPARK colourchanging ink that has a rolling-bar effect. HIDDEN IMAGE: When a new banknote is held almost horizontally to your eyes, the denomination numeral appears in the band below the image of former President Nelson Mandela.

Last time we said there were 3 easy steps to stop the spread of the disease. Cough & sneeze into your sleeves or into a piece of cloth; open windows; and eat healthy food. This week: how to optimise treatment in order to achieve the speedy cure and recovery from TB. Again 3 easy steps. The first step is always to report to a health clinic the moment you think you may have TB. How will you know? About 7 things to check for: (1) Am I sweating unusually in bed at night? (2) Am I coughing for more than 2 weeks? (3) Am I loosing appetite and weight? (4) Do I have chest pains, fast breathing or difficulty in breathing? (5) Do I cough blood in my sputum? (6) Am I experiencing recurrent fever chills that are lasting for more than 3 days? (7) Am I experiencing on going weakness and fatigue? If you answer yes to any of the 7 things, immediately report to a clinic so that tests can be done as quickly as possible. No, this is not a painful process. When you are placed on treatment, know and accept that you will have to take your treatment for 6 months. This may seem long, but if you do not want to damage your lungs or infect other people, please stick to this. We give you the medicine free-of-charge and we give you people to support you through this period, and they are really there to help you make sure that you take your treatment everyday, so that you can get healthy and stay healthy as quickly as possible. Ashleigh is the creator and owner of DearLulu, an exclusive online clothing boutique inspired by Tumblr fashion blogs. The clothes are sold through a bidding system of purchasing. DearLulu started out with only 35 Likes on the Facebook fan page but soon became a national hit with 1799 Likes from all over the country. After a very successful year DearLulu is celebrating its first birthday in October. Ashleigh, an A grade student of Theodor Herzl, who has always been interested in the world of fashion, knew that Tumblr fashion blogs inspire most of the youth of today’s sense of style, but that there was nowhere to source it. After a lot of planning, market research and finding the right suppliers, DearLulu was born. She sources the clothing and tells her suppliers what she

needs. When she receives the clothing she dress models and takes photos of them herself. What makes the clothing exclusive is that there is only one of each item. She says the business is a family group effort. She calls her mom the “momager”, who helps her scout for clothes. Gemma, her 16-year-old sister ,is in charge of accounting and her dad, whom she calls the BOD (Bank of Dad) handles the finances. Ashleigh is very hard working and works over weekends and during break times too. She says school does come first and she never misses a day of school. She is also a drama student and involved in plays. She is considering studying media and film one day, but says it all depends on where the business takes her. The first batch of stock that was released last year in October was only between 10 to 15 items, but has now increased tremendously. Her target market is the age group between 13 to 25 years and her latest stock which will be released shortly includes bikinis, peter pan collar tops, high-waisted shorts, dresses and loads of American and Union Jack flag items! Meyers recently went to Spain on a

On Saturday, October 6, they will be having an alcohol bingo at the S. Thomas Auditorium at St Thomas Secondary school in Gelvandale According to group member Samantha Cornelius, there are about 13 members and each one has to raise between R40 000 and R45 000, spending money and match tickets not included, to be able to go to Brazil. Andrew Young had to choose, at a young age, between football or music and, although he chose the latter he is an avid Liverpool Fan and has performed their anthem: “You Never Walk Alone”,on several occasions. Summerstrand breast cancer survivor’s book published overseas TINNEKE GOEDHALS SUMMERSTRAND registered nurse and breast cancer survivor, Shirley Corder, has written a book to offer strength, encouragement and hope for patients and their family. Her book Strength Renewed, Meditations for your Journey through Breast Cancer, was launched in America on October 1 and will be launched in Port Elizabeth tomorrow. In the book meditations combined with Scripture and stories from the author’s own experience can be read in sequential order to move the reader through a typical cancer journey from

diagnosis through treatment. Each devotion also stands on its own, so readers can go directly to the entry that speaks to their need. The meditation concludes with a short prayer and a Scripture verse for encouragement. “Nothing can sap a person’s strength and hope quite like a cancer diagnosis - unless it is the energy-stealing radiation, chemotherapy and surgeries faced in the fight to survive. But one can find hope and strength in the pages of Scripture and in the experience of someone who has been there,” she says. For Shirley writing was a hobby until the beginning of 2001. “Then the Lord spoke to me through Scripture. I knew He meant I was to share some of the wondrous things He had done for me

St Dominic’s learner is budding film-maker TINNEKE GOEDHALS WHILE the thought of making your own film at the age of 17 would seem like a mission impossible for many teens, Joshua Dickinson is turning this dream into a fictional reality. Joshua has embarked on the ambitious project of making a full-length movie. The movie which he will be directing and producing at his school, St Dominic’s Priory, is called “The Confession” and it revolves around a group of students at the school. It’s a drama with a little bit of action. His main reason in undertaking this project is that he wants to introduce the film and television industry to schools and help educate other learners on the fundamental concepts of this industry. “The industry is the fifth largest industry in the world and I would like to show everyone how it works and what it takes to actually make a film.” Joshua has got the backing of the Eastern Cape Film Commissioner, Chris van Vuuren, who will be helping him. He has got some funding already and has managed to reach his initial target getting funds from several companies across PE. He says he has always shown a little interest in movie-making, but in the last two or three years he has been greatly interested. “I’ve always liked to find out how TV shows and films have been made. When I watch TV, I always like to figure out how or what they’ve done and who has done it. I like writing as well. Filming with my camera and later editing the material have always been a great hobby and recreational pasttime for me,” said Joshua. Joshua has done a theatre course for TV and has himself appeared on TV, once in Big 1 Up and twice on Bay TV. “It’s weird to see yourself on TV. When you go for the interview you sense the camera but never think about being on TV and when you see it, it looks completely different,” he says. Joshua is considering making a career out of filming. “It’s one of the options, but I am not too sure as there are other things that I’m interested in. If not filming, the second option is to compose music, because I play piano, saxophoneand guitar and like working with different instruments and creating sounds.” He also has a great interest in politics and is also considering studying political law and psychology.

She had to leave nursing due to her impaired immunity system. “During a traumatic year of surgery, radiotherapy and chemotherapy, the Lord spoke to me from His Word,” she said. Every November for the last five years, she completed a novel for fun. She and her husband, Rob, take daily walks, mainly along the beachfront and other scenic areas. These supply her with further writing fodder. Shirley is also a contributing author to a number of books, including several Guide Post Anthologies and two Chicken Soup Anthologies. She was born in Scotland, but grew

up in Gwelo, Rhodesia. She started writing when she was 14-years-old. “As a little girl, I had a problem discerning between fact and fiction, a ‘gift’ neither my parents nor my teachers seemed to appreciate. When I was 14, I needed a Christian play so I wrote it. This started an awareness that if I wanted something original to read or produce, the cheapest and most rewarding way was to write it myself. The book that is published in America by Revell, a division of the Baker Publishing Company will be available in all bookshops in SA from November 10, but already can be obtained through Amazon. The biggest news in the world of Formula 1 doesn’t have much to do with Japan however. Instead, Lewis, Hamilton grabbed all the headlines last week as McLaren officially announced the signing of Sergio Perez on a ‘multi-year’ deal to partner Jenson Button. Never to be outdone McLaren’s announcement came ahead of Mercedes’ own one that they had secured the services of Lewis Hamilton for the next three years. There are many who sit on the fence about Hamilton’s decision to join the Brackley-based team. There is no crystal ball in this case and only time will tell if the Brit made the right call. Lewis Hamilton has been with McLaren since the age of 13 and, as in any relationship, there comes a time to move on and the writing has been on the wall for quite some time. For every year that LH has been with McLaren they have provided him with a race-winning car. Will Mercedes, which has managed only one win in fifty-two races, be able to do the same? Naturally there are some that will suggest it’s all about the mon-

cuit. The Japanese GP has earned its legendary status on the F1 calendar and can easily be spoken of in the same breath as Spa, Monza and Monaco. The classic high-speed esses at the start of the lap demand precision while the undulation throughout the figure-of-eight track makes it one of the trickiest all year round. The famous 130R corner has seen many crashes in its time but equally as much bravery as drivers dare to keep the throttle flat through this epic corner. The slower sections of the track do not translate to a less challenging task. Around the lap every strength and weakness of an F1 car is put under the microscope. The high-speed first sector and long straights require an efficient aero-package while the hairpin, Degner curves and Spoon demand stability. The more than five kilometres it takes to complete a lap may sound lengthy but Suzuka remains a blindingly quick track. There are no masses of concrete run-off area around these parts; this circuit has remained traditional with small run-off areas ready to punish the driver. As a Grand Prix venue it’s steeped in Formula 1 history and folklore. It is almost impossible to mention Suzuka and not conjure up images of larger-than-life Senna and Prost duels. Year on year Formula 1 has added to his majestic venue’s remarkable history. It will be no different in 2012.

Every eight seconds, someone in the world dies from diabetes-related causes; and within the same eight seconds, two people in the world develop the condition. People are encouraged to stand up to fight against diabetes by joining in the Global Diabetes Run/Walk which is supported by ProNutro. The Nelson Mandela Bay leg of the Series takes place on Saturday, October 20 at 9am at North End Lake. Participants can wear blue and create awareness about diabetes by taking part in this fun and social walk. Complete either one lap (4.2km) or two laps (8.4km) around the Lake

precinct, bring friends and family and encourage gentle social exercise. Outside chance better than none

LET’S accentuate the positive and eliminate the negative, a la former All Blacks and Lions coach, John Mitchell. Before the kick-off of the Springboks-Wallabies Four Nations second-round match at Loftus last weekend, he made no bones about it – “South Africa by 20 points,” he said.

Well, producing their best performance for some while, Mitchell had it almost spot on as the Boks did even better with an emphatic 31-8 victory. You’ll know by now, of course, but had you stayed up until after midnight, like some of us restless souls, you’d have known earlier that in Mar del Plata, the All Blacks made mince-meat (54-15) of the brave but thoroughly outplayed Argentine Pumas, scoring seven tries in the process. Corey Jane got two of those seven tries and the remaining 19 points came from conversions or penalties, shared by Dan Carter and Aaron Cruden, who replaced the No 1 flyhalf as the All Blacks allowed all their substitutes a run, resting even captain Richie McCaw with the game already in the New Zealanders’ pocket. But to return to that call to be positive. Can the Boks redeem themselves and beat the All Blacks at the FNB Stadium in Soweto come Saturday? Of course, it won’t make any difference to the Four Nations Rugby Championship standings – the New Zealanders already have that wrapped up with only wins on their score-sheet so far. But as everyone knows, in matches between these two teams (SA and NZ), it’s only the game of the moment that counts. So... can Jean de Villiers’ team pull it off ? Anything is possible. But if you were pushed

to make a John Mitchell-type call, you’d have to say that the Springboks, though much improved, have little better than an outside chance, even though it’s a home game. There was much to enthuse about in the home team’s performance last week. In a twist that would have done the best mystery novel proud, newboy on the block, Johan Goosen, fully lived up to expectations as a running flyhalf who brought new rhythm to the formerly stuttering backline. But as a place-kicker he didn’t bring it off and after two missed kicks, was sensibly replaced by Ruan Pienaar. It didn’t matter that the scrumhalf, in an otherwise top notch performance, was not always on target – the point was Goosen was allowed to play his natural game without negative thoughts about his lack of kicking success. In addition to Goosen, Jaco Taute did a workmanlike job standing in for Francois Steyn, who hopefully will return in midfield for the All Blacks clash, while Andries Bekker was back to his best in a pack also benefiting from good all-round work by all its components, with fellow-lock Eben Etzebeth, Willem Alberts and Francois Louw standing out, in particular. In all this, shining once more like a crown jewel, was Bryan Habana, back to his electric best with a hat-trick of tries. Great stuff, Bryan! The old expression “It’s not cricket” – not what their supporters have been hoping for anyway – is proving agonisingly true for AB de Villiers’ Proteas at the ICC World T2O championships in Colombo, Sri Lanka. They were found wanting yet again, this time by a rampant Australian XI. Need to keep trucking, lads!

Grey U15 waterpolo team are SA champs The Grey High u15A waterpolo side were crowned SA Champs at the annual Ian Melliar u15 Tournament which was recently hosted by Wynberg in Cape Town. A total of 20 of the top waterpolo schools from around the country were in attendance to compete for the coveted Old Mutual Trophy - a tournament which is known as the official South African Inter-Schools u15 Championships with the top teams from every province in attendance. Grey did exceptionally well to win this tournament for the third time and in the process won their fourth successive tournament for 2012.

Grey’s results of the pool games are:

Beat Paul Roos from the Western Cape 22-3 Beat St Peter’s from KwaZulu-Natal 24-2 Beat Pretoria Boys’ from Northern Gauteng 20-8 Lost to Reddam from Western Cape 4-5, to progress to the quarter final. Grey then met Bishops from Western Cape in the quarter finals, and did well to win this play-off match by 16 goals to 2 – an exceptional performance against one of Western Cape’s top u15 sides. In the Semi-Final, Grey then faced one of the powerhouses of South African Schools Waterpolo, St John’s College, who are by quite some margin the best team in Gauteng. Grey pro-

Grey continued their dominance in the final, where they faced the only unbeaten side in the tournament, Reddam House, from the Western Cape side. Baseball fever to hit Despatch HEILIE COMBRINCK Baltimore chop, batboy, beanball, bench jockey ... these are but a few of the extended baseball terms which will soon be heard in Despatch during the South African Masters Baseball Association’s (SAMBA) 20th inter-provincial baseball tournament. The South African Masters Baseball Challenge will be held at Despatch Rugby Club from 9 to 13 October with EP Masters Baseball Association as the hosts. This will be the first time in the history of Despatch that a baseball national tournament is being hosted in town. Terrence Gouws, spokesman for the SAMBA tournament, said: “We are excited about hosting the tournament. Baseball is growing rapidly in this province and hosting a tournament of this magnitude will do well in developing the sport. “We invite the public to pop in to experience some excellent baseballers in action. Entrance is free of charge,” said Gouws. The first baseball tournament on South African soil was held in Pretoria during 1993 and the first ever tournament in the Eastern Cape was held in Uitenhage during September 1996. “This will be the second tournament to be hosted by EP Masters who won the 1998 SAMBA tournament in Centurion and the 1999 tournament held in Durban,” said

Gouws. The EP Social side won the Masters section for three consecutive years namely 2009, 2010 and 2011. EP Junior Masters won their division at the SAMBA tournament of 2006 in George and were the runners-up during 2011 in Gauteng. The first game of each day of the forthcoming South African Masters Baseball Challenge will start at 8.30am and the duration normally is an hour and 45 minutes. Niteball games will commence at 7pm. A total of 62 games will be played during the tournament and competitors will be from nine provinces across South Africa. The final game will be played on Saturday, 13 October at 9.30am and will be followed by a prize-giving. The participating teams in the inter-provincial baseball tournament include: Western Province, Kwazulu-Natal, Eastern Gauteng, Northern Gauteng, South Western Gauteng and the hosts, Eastern Province. There will be three sections of participation, namely, an Elite section, Social and Vets with Juniors playing Niteball. Entrance is free to the live action on three baseball diamonds and there will be a variety of foodstalls, a beer tent and live entertainment will be the order of the day on the main field. Michael Stephen takes 2012 Production Car title PE EXPRESS REPORTER LOCAL motor sport hero, Michael Stephen, has claimed the 2012 Production Car title. Nail-biting racing at the eighth and penultimate round of the WesBank Super Series held at Killarney on Saturday, September 22, saw Stephen, the Xtreme Audi driver and defending Production Car class A champion, defending his title. In qualifying, Stephen qualified on pole position and in so doing gained an extra three points for the championship, while teammate Tschops Sipuka ended up eighth on the grid. In race one, Stephen held the lead in the opening laps but was passed by Subaru driver, Hennie Groenewald. Stephen played it safe and settled for second, rather than taking risks and losing the 10 points on offer. Sipuka moved up from his eighth position start to take a hard-fought fifth position in race one setting the fastest lap in the process. Race two saw a top four inverted grid, with

Stephen on third and Sipuka fifth. Stephen quickly moved into second position and chased down the leader. He ran out of laps and settled for second position, with his championship rivals having both fallen out the race. Sipuka had an excellent race once again and moved up to a well-deserved third position. Starting on pole position in the final heat, Stephen led the chasing pack for the entire race, despite some challenges towards the latter part with oil on the track in the final corner and backmarkers to contend with. A determined and focused Stephen did not let this come in the way of his chase for the chequered flag which finally dropped, giving him the much deserved feature race win. Sipuka’s race was unfortunately not as rewarding. Starting third on the grid and maintaining his position through the hustle and bustle of the first few corners, the skilled driver was unfortunately hit from behind by Van der Linde’s BMW, forcing him to retire immediately, with suspension damage. Overall, Stephen finished first overall for the day, while Sipuka’s DNF in race three prevented him from taking a race day podium slot.

Two teams consisting of a mix of runners, cyclists and drivers will be pitted against each other and will have to overcome a series of challenges, harsh terrain and unpredictable conditions from Port Elizabeth until the finish line at the Kyalami Race Track in Midrand on November 2. Each 21-member team consists of three runners, three cyclists, two drivers, an allrounder and support personnel. The Continental Run2Stop Challenge has combined various non-mainstream sporting disciplines, such as driving, running and cycling, together with signed on celebrity participants some of whom are household names and have the financial backing of one of the world’s leading automotive suppliers, Continental. According to Russel Stewart, CTSA Marketing Manager, the Run2Stop Challenge was created to introduce the supply of the latest rubber compounds from CTSA to the outsole of new Adidas running shoe, Adistar Ride 3. Last year the race took place over a 12-day period from Cape Town to Johannesburg. Stewart says this year’s event is going to be bigger than the previous one and promises to keep the entrants on their toes. “We’ve added in a few surprises and changes to make this year’s challenge more unpredictable. We have a loyal group of return entrants, as well as some new thrill seekers who will be pushing themselves to the limit over the course of eight days. The route from Port Elizabeth to Midrand is perfect due to the mixed terrain that will surely make this year’s endurance race the most challenging and exciting yet.” The drivers will follow allocated routes from PE to Midrand and have a total of 2 400km to cover per team while the athletes will run a total of 1 600km per team over the course of one week. The total race distance for both teams during the seven-day period will be 8 000 km.

This year Run2Stop will also see cyclists Yolandi du Toit and Nicci Grobler making their debut in the challenge and they will be in a starstudded lineup that includes three returning competitors, namely Comrades Marathon and Two Oceans silver medalist Lindsey Parry, former Bafana Bafana players and this year’s event captains Bradley Carnell and Helman Mkhalele.
