De Vos Malan hou boemelaarsdag

New daycare initiative for elderly ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL

ANY elderly people are left alone at home during the day while their adult children and grandchildren are at work or school. For some senior citizens this is a lonely and depressing situation.

The We Care Outreach Initiative have come up with a solution by establishing a daycare centre especially for the elderly. We Care is a Non-Profitable Organization (NPO) that was established during September 2007. They are based at the Stepping Stones building in Bethelsdorp. Ashlene Arends, CEO of We Care, said with the elderly daycare centre they aim to bring elderly people together for companionship while also providing care and assistance from the trained volunteers who work at the centre. “The elderly daycare centre will offer relief to family members and will allow them the freedom to go to work, handle personal business and having the peace of mind knowing that their relative is well cared for and safe,” Arends said. Arends added that most senior citizens who are left at home without supervision live in fear of the criminal element in their areas, hence they sit behind locked doors the whole day. Some elderly folks are also home-bound due to the state of their health, therefore never having the chance to interact with their peers. “In most circumstances, elderly folks have no caretakers at all during the day especially when their family members had to go to work or shopping, or children just neglect their parents and treat them as a burden. For this reason, our survey has shown that the need for

adult daycare in our communities is of great importance and urgency,” said Arends. The elderly daycare aims specifically to encourage socialisation, providing social activities, meals, recreation and some basic health services. The centre has enough room to accommodate up to 40 senior citizens, and will have sleeping facilities should some of them feel to rest during the day. The elderly centre will, like a normal daycare centre, operate from early in the morning until late in the afternoon. There will also be entertainment and interaction with the We Care’s Senior Citizens Club. “Seniors generally take part in the programme on a scheduled basis and the services that will be offered will include counselling, education, evening care, exercise, health screening, meals, medical care, recreation and medication management,” explained Arends. We Care’s social worker will assess all elderly citizens who want to join the daycare centre, and the nominal fee will be determined by the outcome of this assessment. The daycare centre will open its doors by the end of May. We Care can be contacted on 0 041 481 2189, e-mail: wecare2007@webmail.co.za or their website: www.wecareproject.co.za
