The latest of which, Cubana Latino Café and Havana Lounge, sponsored a golf cart which will be used to conduct weekly beachfront inspections and can also be used to convey officials to on site visits to try to ensure the improvement and maintenance of the area during the season.

Not only did Cubana sponsor the golf cart, as part of their public/private partnership with the metro, but they have also ploughed more of their own money into the McArthur Baths complex than has been spent since the original upgrade.

George Davelis, owner of Cubana, and his business partner have undertaken a complete refurbishment of the kiddies’ pool as well as the main pool, and have fibre glassed both pools. The pumps have been repaired and where required, have been replaced.

Newton Park pool still not fixed

REPORTER THE empty and unused Newton Park Swimming Pool is beset by more problems leading to the possible postponement of fixtures scheduled to take place at the pool.

The swimming pool was to be closed in July for repairs to the filtration and pump systems. On Wednesday July 31, Cllr Andrew Whitfield, PR Councillor for Sports, Arts, Recreation and Culture, conducted a site visit to determine the extent of the problems.

He was informed that maintenance on the pump and filtration systems had been completed but further problems had been discovered.

Upon inspection the pool was empty with broken tiles in sections with no contractors on site. “I have learnt that a dispute between the contractor and the tile supplier has led to the delay in repairs

to the pool,” said Whitfield.

Whitfield said the latest situation is likely to affect the hosting of the annual Aqua Bear Gala in September, which attracts approximately 560 swimmers, some coming from as far away as Zimbabwe.

“The Metro cannot afford to lose out on events of this nature that contribute to our local economy and promote our image as a water sports capital,” said Whitfield.

He has spoken with the Acting Executive Director of Economic Development and Recreational Services, Anele Qaba, who assured him that an urgent report on the Newton Park Swimming Pool would again be tabled at a committee meeting on Friday, August 2.

“It is simply unacceptable that a centre of sporting excellence like the Newton Park Swimming Pool should remain empty and unused. I will continue to engage with officials and push for an urgent solution to this problem,” said Cllr Whitfield.

In addition, they are opening up outside catering which will be able to service the needs of both the patrons and the surrounding beach goers.

In addition to these developments, the Mandela Bay Development Agency Kings Beach upgrade is now nearing completion, with the finishing touches and soft landscaping being done to the parking area. The new skate bowl is open and has proven hugely popular. The kiosks at the back of Kings Beach will be opening under the well known Red Windmill brand and will be able to service beach goers over the Summer Season.

Councillor of the ward, Dean Biddulph, said, “Five years ago, shortly after being elected to office, I requested residents to send me their ideas for what they would like to see happen at the Kings Beach area which, at the time was derelict and run down. Now, with the help of the MBDA and the wonderful relationships that I have forged and not without a considerable amount of lobbying, I am truly proud of the way in which this area has been transformed and just how popular it has become,” said Biddulph.

The old promenade area is still due for upgrade in this financial year whilst a lot of work has been done with Biddulph chipping into his annual ward councillor discretionary fund for the past three years into upgrade work.

New grass has also been planted in this area

and he is working hard on ensuring that the Shark Rock Pier will also receive a much needed revamp in the next financial cycle. This has been included into the Ward 2 IDP plan. There are plans for day cabanas to be built to add to the amenities on offer.

“The municipality always struggled to find budget to look after the pools and it was an annual battle to ensure that the pools were clean and ready for the Summer Season. Last year,

for the first time, and again this year, the pools are clean and in pristine condition for beach goers. You cannot ask for more than that!

“It is only by working together and encouraging that sense of community and belonging that we will begin to realise the massive tourist potential that exists along our beachfront,” said Biddulph.

To get the tastebuds tingling for the next cooking demo, Dessie’s is sharing one of the recipes of the “Comfort Foods for the Winter Chill” cooking demo with readers.

Fish chowder with spring onions Serves 4

Ingredients • 15 g butter • 4 rashers bacon, chopped • 1 small onion, finely chopped • 2 sticks celery, finely chopped • 1 fresh red chilli, deseeded and finely chopped • 4 sweet corn • 2 medium potatoes, peeled and chopped • 900 ml vegetable or fish stock • 400 g fresh haddock, skinned • 60 ml cream • A small

handful of chopped fresh parsley • 4 spring onions, finely sliced

Method

1. Make the fish stock first by placing 1 fish deboned in a pot with 1 onion, 3 carrots sliced, 1 bay leaf, 5 peppercorns, and 3 sticks celery. Bring to the boil, simmer for 20 minutes and switch off. Allow to cool and strain.

Keep the liquid and discard the bits.

2. Melt the butter in a large saucepan over a medium heat. Add the bacon, onion, celery and chilli and simmer for 5 minutes, stirring until soft but not browned.

3. Peel the husks from the corn and slice off the kernels with a sharp knife. Add the sweet corn and potato to the pan along with the stock. Bring to the boil, then simmer gently for 10 minutes or until the potato is soft. Blitz roughly with a hand blender.

4. Add the mussels and cream; bring to the boil and cook for a few minutes until the mussels have opened – discard any that have remained closed. If you like you may take them out of the shells.

5. Remove from the heat and season.

6. Serve sprinkled with parsley and crusty bread.

Theodor Herzl and Walmer High help feed the needy REPORTER THEODOR Herzl’s high school pupils worked together with pupils from Walmer High to help feed the very poor and needy in Walmer township (Gcebera) on Mandela Day. A total of 30 pupils and a few staff members from both schools met at Walmer High’s library to spend about 40 minutes engaging in what they, the teenagers, thought of the importance of Mandela Day, of community service, and the relevance of the term ‘Born Free’.

They chatted in small mixed groups, exchanging perceptions and learning from

each other’s point of views. Both groups had collected food (bread, potatoes, carrots, fruit, samp and beans, and canned goods like chakalaka and soup).

They busied themselves organising these into approximately 70 food parcels and then headed over to the nearby Gqebera Community Soup Kitchen, which is run by St John’s Church.

A queue of hungry Gcebera residents gratefully received parcels of food from the pupils. “It was a humbling, heart warming experience and Tata Madiba himself would have been so pleased to see children connecting together to do good for those less fortunate,” said Mary Jane Botha, marketing manager of the Theodor Herzl Schools.

Truth Squad - the youth department of Spirit of Unity Ministries, is about to host their 7th B.L.O.C.K party.

The main aim of the B.L.O.C.K (Believers Lounging On Corners for the Kingdom) party is to spread awareness to curb drug abuse, violence and gangsterism.

“When we were children we could play freely in these parks but nowadays it’s just not safe for our children anymore. Today parkies have become danger zones since it is now the preferred spot for gangsters and robbers. We need to take our spaces back, and with this

block party we encourage the community to do so,” said Raymond Mateza of Truth Squad, who started the Block Party initiative.

To strengthen their cause, Truth Squad is now collaborating with motivational speaker and drug counsellor Reeze Telling who regularly ministers to the youth at high schools.

The block party will be on August 10 at the park behind Park United field in Esterhuizen Street. The event takes the form of a music festival which features various music artists and motivational speakers.

Smokie in Friendly City this September THE band who brought us “Living Next Door to Alice” and “Mexican Girl” will be returning to South Africa – and Port Elizabeth – in September this year, as part of their Take a Minute World Tour.

Smokie will perform at the Boardwalk International Convention Centre (ICC) on September 29.

Most people are aware of the health hazards inherent to the habit of smoking and that tobacco smoke is a source of lung cancer as well as many other serious illnesses.

Furthermore every smoker knows how addictive tobacco can be and how difficult it is to part with this lifelong companion being solely reliant on one’s own will power.

Smoking affects all social classes and age groups, most alarmingly our youth.

Because of health damage and the consequent hospital care, cigarette smoking results in huge medical expenditure around the globe. Statistics confirm that smoking and its related illnesses constitutes the primary cause of death in industrialized countries. According to the WHO (World Health Organization) approximately 27 000 people die annually in South Africa of smoking related diseases.

Only recently was nicotine officially declared a drug and in a comparison between the properties of several major drugs such as: heroin, cocaine and alcohol, it has been found that nicotine has the highest addictive power. Substance induced addiction is determined by: the difficulty a person encounters when trying to cease, the frequency of relapses, the percentage of dependent people and the “value” it has among the users, evidence of health damage notwithstanding.

Pharmacological and psychological dependence coexist within the same person and in a variety of people in different proportions. Therefore smoking causes dependence and induces smokers to become slaves to the habit both on a physical and psychological level.

To quit nicotine which includes all forms, smoking, chewing, snuffing and hookah pipe, is not easy because smokers rarely treat the addiction with respect, either take it lightly or try to wean themselves off it. Many smokers fail more than once and then give up for a while and smoke a further number of years before they realize another few thousand cigarettes were inhaled, the situation is worse as the physical evidence starts to show. Premature aging, wrinkles, impotence, infertility, smokers cough, shortness of breath.

There is a solution! Nicotine must be treated like any other addiction, stop at once and block the physiological cravings, understand the psychological challenges and work with support for the first two weeks and you are a non-smoker.

NMMU’s Music staff to perform at lunch hour concert REPORTER NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University’s (NMMU) Department of Music presents a Staff Chamber Lunch Hour Concert today at 1pm in the NMMU South Campus Auditorium. Staff members from the NMMU Department of Music will be performing.

This concert includes works from composers such as Beethoven, Schubert and Chopin. The musical styles range from classical to jazz. The programme consists of a number of trios and duets.

Some of the who that will be performing are Prof Erik Albertyn, Dr Erika Bothma, Dr Rudi

Bower, Pierre Malan, Muzuvikile Serenya, Gareth Williams, Annamarie Serrao and also master’s students JF Viljoen and Liske Potgieter.

Most of the staff members perform in the Eastern Cape Philharmonic Orchestra and various ensembles.

All the staff members are well respected adjudicators for national music competitions like Artscape and various music Eisteddfods. Many of them also examine for UNISA’s external examinations nationally. They are all accomplished musicians with a love for teaching.

Community Media Trust (CMT) a national HIV and AIDS Media and Outreach NGO is looking to recruit a committed, enthusiastic and socially-minded Community Mobiliser (CM), who will be based in Port Elizabeth.

The Community Mobiliser (preference will be given to Afrikaans-speaking males) will be ex-pected to network with potential support and partner organisations throughout the Eastern Cape to plan and execute social mobilisation activities, such as Open Day and Door-to-door events to inform and educate communities about the health benefits of safe, male circumcision in order to drive the demand for safe circumcision in medical facilities in the Eastern Cape.

Applicants should have worked for reputable community develop-ment agencies, community-based organisations or non-profit organisations and have experience in community develop-ment and event coordination.

This post requires provincial travel and the availability to work some weekends.

Whilst there are numerous popular urbanathlon-style events around the world, the Nelson Mandela Bay Urban Run is unique in its support of local charities and the use of historic landmarks as the urban obstacles.

The nominated charities for the 2013 Urban Run are Khaya Cheshire, an outreach project of the Summerstrand Cheshire Homes, which looks after mentally and physically disabled children and youth living in the impoverished Walmer Township, and Cleft Friends, a project of the Smile Foundation offering group support for parents and medical professionals dealing with babies born with cleft palates. Proceeds from the Kids’ Urban Run, which takes place on the Saturday afternoon, will go in support of creating better leaders and youth within our society as we create awareness and support for the Nelson Mandela Bay Scouts movement.

Two months to Ocean Racing Series THE 9th Season of the Ocean Racing Series (ORS) will kick off in two months’ time with Season 9 consisting of 11 race days between the 6th October 2013 and the 30th March 2014.

Online registration for the Series will open on the 21st August on www.oceanracingseries.com.

The Series, Africa’s largest family lifestyle beach event, includes a 1km and 2km Ocean Swim, a 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk and Kids (12u) and a 1km Beach Run, each supported by a naming sponsor. Series registered participants taking part in only 1 of the above events on race days.

The ORS takes place on Port Elizabeth’s premier beach, Hobie Beach, on mostly alternate Sunday mornings from 9am with a prize giving for kids at 9.45am and for adults from 10am or as soon as all participants are finished.

The 2013 dates for the Series are 6th and 20th October, 3rd and 17th November and 1st December.

2014 Sees the season continue on 12th and 26th January, 9th February and the 2nd, 16th and 30th March.

THERE WAS a time when South African rugby captains, with a touch of embarrassment in the knowledge of a lucky victory, would say: “We’ll take it – a win’s a win, old chum.”

But not anymore. Now it’s a lot more complicated. You virtually need a pocket calculator.

That’s how the Southern Kings must have felt at Ellis Park last weekend when they beat the MTN Lions 23-18 (a five-point margin) before a thunderous crowd of some 60 000, only to lose the home-and-away playoff for next year’s Super Rugby competition, as a result of the previous week’s 26-19 loss (a seven-point margin) at home in PE the previous week.

What a comeback it was, too, by the Kings.

With 14 minutes left to play and the Lions leading 18-9, it looked to be all over bar the shouting. But in the tense atmosphere that seemed literally to make the surrounding air shimmer, many mistakes were made. Suffice it to say if Elton Jantjies had had his kicking boots on, the Lions would have won in a canter.

But the Kings refused to give up. Instead they turned up the tempo – no one more so than young Scott van Breda who revealed himself not only as lightning quick in crossing for a thrilling try but an accurate goalkicker to boot, adding two conversions and three penalties for 18 valuable match-winning points.

Close behind was replacement flyhalf, George Whitehead, standing in for injured Demetri Catrakilis, experienced centre Waylon Murray and the entire pack, who showed great courage in matching the body-crunching efforts of the home side’s forwards.

Retaining the title they won last year, the Highlanders beat South African Jake White’s Brumbies 27-22. It’s the same White, of course, who took the Springboks to an historic second World Cup title in France in 2007. With just 17 minutes to the final whistle the Brumbies led 22-12 and seemed set for a major upset. But it wasn’t to be.

The Proteas consoled cricket fans somewhat last Sunday by taking a 2-0 lead in the threematch T20 series against Sri Lanka in the sleepy coastal town of Hambantota. At best a small consolation in an otherwise largely unproductive tour.

Al die deelnemers aan die bergfietswedren wat by Hopewell langs St. Albans plaasvind, sal ook medaljes ontvang.

Daar is ook weer vanjaar baie groot prysgeld en gelukkige trekkinge op die spel vir mans en vroue in die pad en bergfietswedrenne.

Medaljes is op die spel vir alle ryers wat hulle afstande voltooi sowel as goud, silwer en brons vir die wenners van die verskillede ouderdomsgroepe in die padwedren.
