Old rugby stadium looks like a dump LIZEKA TANDWA
T
HE Old Telkom Park stadium is now a dumping zone and a free for all with contractors stripping off the stadium of what’s left of the property.
When PE Express visited the Old Telkom Park stadium to hear claims from DA Councillor Dean Biddulph that the stadium had become a dump site and a free for all, the PE Express reporter found three teams of contractors who claimed to have had permission from the municipality to strip down the stadium taking any material they could salvage. “There have been many people coming into the stadium illegally and stripping off panels and any material they could find, saying they had permission from the office of Sport and Recreation,” said Biddulph. Biddulph said the stadium had been ripe for illegal activity for many months now, with no signs that the municipality would secure the land for redevelopment. “The land was essentially given to the Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) which would have helped find a proposal to turn the land into an industrial area for redevelopment. Due to the economic downfall in the metro, this process is slower than anticipated.” Biddulph said although the metro had made these plans, nothing has been done to secure the area from vandalism and the dumping ground it has now become. Biddulph said he had spoken on numerous times with the municipal Sports and Recreation Department Director but nothing had been done about the vandalism. “The municipality needs to fast track the demolition in this land or the property needs to be developed before it becomes a playing ground for criminal activity as it’s fast becoming. This once used to be the pride of Eastern province rugby and now it has been butchered,” said Biddulph.
