Happy 30th birthday! EXPRESS REPORTER ON November 16 Port Elizabeth Express, the biggest local newspaper in the Eastern Cape, celebrates 30 years of serving the Port Elizabeth community. Since the first edition was published on November 16, 1983, the newspaper has held steadfast in good and difficult economic times, keeping to the promise made in the first edition of being an exclusive newspaper for the residents of this city and providing a service to all spheres of life – from the housewife to the businessman and the sport lover, without forgetting the school or the church. As the face of the community changed over the 30 years, so has the Port Elizabeth Express kept fulfilling this promise to readers and advertisers; and to this day remains the local medium of choice. One of the biggest and most exciting changes was the decision to increase its distribution from 60 000 to 90 000 in 2002. This not only offered advertisers the opportunity to reach 90 000 homes, but also resulted in bringing news that matters to over 300 000 readers in Port Elizabeth alone. This is the biggest distribution of any weekly newspaper in Port Elizabeth. In November 2007 Port Elizabeth Express became part of OP Koerante, a business unit specifically aimed at uniting the then three Media 24 free local newspapers, i.e. Port Elizabeth Express, Kouga Express and UD News, under one umbrella in the Eastern Cape. The Port Elizabeth Express Indaba was launched as a monthly English/ Xhosa newspaper in July 2008, and was relaunched in August 2011 as a weekly newspaper. 2012 and 2013 has seen the rapid expansion of the OP Koerante stable of newspapers, with 11 newspapers from Mossel Bay in the west all along the coast to East London in the east and the Transkei Interior up to Bizana. The newspaper has also embraced the digital era with a website and mobi-site bringing the news to an even wider audience as well as giving readers the opportunity to interact with the paper by being Citizen Journalists . In celebration of the newspaper’s 30th birthday, campaigns are being held in conjunction with the Animal Anti-Cruelty League and the Reach for A Dream Foundation. Opportunistic thieves using windows to access properties REPORTER RESIDENTS are warned to ensure that they do not make it easy for burglars to target their homes. Private security group Atlas said in their Crime Newsletter last week the most common crimes in the city are housebreaking. They caution residents to secure their houses with two or more locks in their windows. Atlas said their subscribers and the Public alike are suffering big losses with items such as computers, laptops, power tools from garages and plasma screens which are being pillaged by money-hungry thieves looking to make a “quick buck”. Atlas Operations Manager, Monty Montgomery, said, “Reports show that windows are being removed/broken to gain access or ‘fish’ items out of the premises and Atlas would like to stress the importance of ensuring that your home or premises is secure, limiting the temptation and access of burglars.” Atlas stressed the need for residents to protect their windows with one or more good locks, an alarm system, burglar-resistant glass, or many small panes instead of one large area of glass. “When installing a window lock, drip some solder on the screw heads. It will stop a bur-

glar from unscrewing the lock after cutting a small hole in the windowpane. Remember to lock and secure all open windows before you leave home. Even windows with burglar bars are no match for these brazen thieves. If you have an alarm, it is vital to ensure that it is armed even if you leave the house for 5 minutes,” added Montgomery. Atlas said it was important to identify possible threats, such as faulty or rusted burglar proofing or windows without any at all. “Trees or bushes around your property give intruders a place to hide, so make sure there are as few as possible near your entrances. “Always remember, windows and doors of your property are the most often-used entry points for burglaries, so do not leave them unprotected. Burglar bars or fixed grilles are a cost-effective way of protecting your property. Installed either internally or externally over windows or doors, they form a physical barrier that will deter most burglars,” explained Montgomery. Atlas said the use of magnetic door and window contacts on all your external doors and windows is strongly recommended by Atlas Security and is one of the minimum specification standards required by all South African Insurance Association (SAIA) Approved alarm installations. Failure to install these door contacts can seriously compromise your security.

Elderly make pretty things for little things REPORTER ELDERLY people using their creativity and time to make the world a better place for young people is what the “Pretty Things for Little Things” campaign is all about. Age-in-Action hosted their 11th annual regional Pretty Things for Little Things championships at Malabar Community Centre on October 30, for entrants from the Eastern Cape. Elderly people as young as 90 years old created toys and crafts as part of this initiative of Shoprite/Checkers in association with Age-in-Action. Age-in-Action Co-ordinator, Eunice De Pearce, said the competition would donate toys, crafts and blankets made by the elderly to over 120 vulnerable children’s organisations this Christmas. Shoprite/Checkers Public Relations Manager Esmerelda Essex said, “With over 22 000 items received nationally this year and 3 253 in the EC Province, it is humbling to realise that Age-in-Action would have gladdened the hearts of 120 vulnerable children by this Christmas. Eastern Cape scooped two national prizes in the categories of clothing (1st prize) and other (2nd prize). “The national judging took place on 4 October in Cape Town.” The provincial prizegiving event was attended by 250 elderly people. A total number of 16 clubs, as well as individual entries, were received. “For the third year in succession

De Pearce said some of the items proved to very popular with the viewing “Age-in-Action” organised with Erica House Child and Youth Centre. “The creativity seen with recycled material was outstanding; it made a statement! ZELDRÉ SWANEPOEL HER feminine appearance and lean frame do not give away the fact that the mom of twin toddlers is a fierce champion kickboxer. Madricia Stallenberg was chosen to represent South Africa in the Senior Ladies’ category at the World Championships for Seniors in Antalya, Turkey. The championship, which comprise Point Fighting, Light Contact, Kick Light, Full Contact and Musical Forms, take place from November 29 to December 8, 2013. Stallenberg is the only senior female kickboxer from the Eastern Cape who qualified to participate in the championships. Her interest in the sport was sparked when a friend introduced her to kickboxing, and she has been involved with it since 2010. “I always loved contact sports, and the sweat and adrenaline they bring. When I discovered kickboxing I realized it was the perfect sport for me. I loved it immediately.” Stallenberg trains for hours every day after work, to be fit and ready for the championships. When she is not training, she spends her time with husband Ulrich and twin daughters Tacianna and Dementieva (4). “I’m looking forward to the championships and I’m working very hard to do well. The only thing holding me back right now is the funding we need to get me there.” She needs approximately R24 000 to make the trip - money that needs to come from her own pocket because funding is not provided for the athletes. Rawson Properties, in Partnership with Casablanca Bar & Grill Cleary Park, will be hosting a fundraiser for her on November 9, from 8pm. “We at Rawson Properties are very proud of Madricia or ‘the super mom’ as we call her. This championship is a big achievement and we are positive that she will do very well at this tournament,” Bradley Murray, owner of Rawson Properties Premier said. He appealed to the community to support this and other fundraising efforts for Stallenberg. For the first time too, AMG has developed its version of the MercedesBenz A-Class, as part of Mercedes’ strategy to have an AMG version in every model series they produce. Msunduzi winner qualifies for worlds REPORTER PORT Elizabeth-based Francois Geldenhuys earned his spot at the 2014 UCI World Cycling Tour when he clinched a double victory in the Msunduzi Road Challenge just outside Pietermaritzburg two weekends ago. Geldenhuys, who rides for local club Shukuma-NMMU, won the time trial in the 30-34 age category and the overall road race in the only African qualifier for the international event. He will take part in both disciplines at the UWCT Finals, which start in Slovenia at the end of August. Previously known as the UCI Masters Road World Championships, the competition will see the world’s best amateur riders competing for the coveted rainbow jerseys in the various age categories. “I only found out about this qualifying event just over a month ago,” said Geldenhuys, who returned to competitive cycling

in August last year after a three-year hiatus due to injury and work commitments. “I’ve been doing a lot of mountain biking in the winter months, so I immediately went back onto the road, which is my favourite discipline, and started training specifically for the Msunduzi race.” While mountain biking had increased his strength and power on the bike, Geldenhuys said he had had to refocus on his speed work. “I actually just went for the road race but thought I’d do the time trial as well. I knew, having good form, I would do reasonably well and if I had a good result it would make me feel more comfortable for the road race.” The surprise double victory gave the 30year-old, who raced semi-professionally for the now-defunct Team Omega, the confidence boost he needed. “I’m very confident that I can improve a lot more leading up to the worlds. Now I’ve got a year’s base behind me and I can just build on that.”

Geldenhuys, who gained his national track colours as a junior, said the time trial would be his main goal in Slovenia. “If I train for that, it will give me good form for the road race anyway.” He previously also represented SA in a tri-nations test against Belgium and Greece. Geldenhuys said he was in some of the best form of his career after also winning the Stonehouse Capital Zuurberg Mountain Bike Challenge and Makro Bestmed Cycle Tour this year. “The last three months have come together nicely. Working in the cycle industry gives you a lot of time to ride.” He said equipment and nutrition sponsors Coimbra Cycles and Isostar had helped his performance. “But the support from Shukuma-NMMU has been very good. They covered all my costs going up to the race this weekend and if it wasn’t for them I wouldn’t be able to get to all the bigger races.”

WE’VE JUST had Diwali – crackers exploding mightily, rockets lacing the night-sky with strings of light like diamond necklaces. Lovely, awe-inspiring. But surely to goodness there’s no need for Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, to indulge in an altogether different form of crackers: the kind signalling a national rugby coach going cuckoo? Last weekend Meyer was quoted as saying he might draft the famed international second-row pairing of Bakkies Botha and Victor Matfield back into Test action. Okay, he’s already done half of it with the selection of iron man, Botha, in the Springbok squad for the three-match European winter tour, starting with Wales in Cardiff this weekend, to be followed on successive Saturdays by Scotland at Murrayfield and France in Paris. Even if Botha, at 34, is playing regularly for Toulon in France, there is surely still a largish step up from that level to the international arena? On the plus side he is match fit, playing more or less weekly, and producing much of the old Botha vim. But speaking to rugby scribes about to embark on tour with his 32-member Bok team, Meyer waxed disturbingly lyrical. “I’ve always rated Bakkies,” he said, “and if he shows he’s good enough there’s no reason why he shouldn’t play international rugby again. On the other hand he may just be on tour to support the youngsters. “At a World Cup,” he added, “you need three to five top players in each position, so the tour is a chance for Botha to show if he’s still up for it.” Meyer added the only person who knew

whether Matfield was still good enough to play at international level, was “Victor himself”. “He’s probably still up there with the best locks around,” Meyer emphasised. “He’s an unbelievable athlete, and to win Tests you need to take your lineout ball and the kickoffs. That’s what lost us the recent Super Rugby clash with the All Blacks – and those areas are an important part of Victor’s strengths. But only he will know if he’s still good enough.” Yes, the great Natalian Phillip Nel was 36 when he captained the Boks on their triumphant tour of Australia and New Zealand in 1937. But international rugby then and now belong to two very different species of the sporting jungle. Now is a whole lot tougher. Meyer, from those quotes, seems to be talking directly about the 2015 World Cup in Britain. Let’s get real about this. That tournament is almost two years away. Rugby at that level is about young men in their prime, not players past their mid-30s. We have at this moment two of the finest young locks in the game in Eben Etzebeth and Pieter-Steph du Toit, the latter not yet owning the proverbial “key of the door” of maturity. These two will be in the prime of their sporting lives come 2015. Don’t forget Andries Bekker either – arguably better all round than either of the two young stalwarts. Who knows by then what Bekker’s Japanese commitments will be? Let Meyer take both veterans with his World Cup team as advisers. The SA Rugby Board can afford it. But let’s look ahead not behind us as we plot for 2015 World Cup glory!

Mucky weekend ahead THIS weekend sees the exciting, if somewhat dirty, Muck Run, sponsored by the Edge Financial Group and backed by Powerade and Virgin Active. The Muck Run is a fun-filled untimed 5km trail run (2km for kids 12 years and under) with no fewer than 14 exciting obstacles out at Bushpig Adventures in Kragga Kamma. Two sessions are being held in order to cater for the growing interest in the event with the kids’ 2km event kicking off at 2km on Saturday afternoon followed by an adult run at 3pm. Craft Beer and a great selection of food will be available for participants and spectators. Sunday sees a 10am start for another of the adult runs. All participants who entered before the 1st November can collect their Muck Run t-shirt at the Virgin Active activation gazebo at Bushpig Adventures on their race day. Participants will also receive a pair of gloves sponsored by Afrox Linde, who have

also donated a fantastic lucky draw prize of a gas stove and gas bottle which will be drawn from all participants on Monday and announced on the Muck Run facebook page. All participants and spectators are encouraged to support the Muck Run charity by bringing all their unwanted clothing items and dropping them off at the Rotary Club of Port Elizabeth Sunrise gazebo on race day. All donations will be given to Cheshire Homes – Cleary Park. Participants are also welcome to donate their dirty race kit which will be cleaned and donated to the charity. Late entries may still be open on www.muckrun.co.za and this is definitely an event which is well worth coming to watch. Bushpig Adventures’ entrance is off Lakeside Road, Kragga Kamma, with directions available on the website. A R20 vehicle entry fee is applicable for all vehicles on race day so people are encouraged to car pool to this event. Hobie Beach, Port Elizabeth in near perfect weather conditions which saw over 450 participants taking part in the 5 events on offer. The youngsters dominated the Ocean Racing Series in Round 3 with the Crickley Dairy 1km Kids’ Beach Run enjoying the largest field of entry with 136 youngsters under the age of 12-years-old taking part. Next popular events on the morning were the DisChem 1km and 2km Ocean Swim events followed by the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run and the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk. Youth appears to be a definite advantage with 16-year-olds Caryn Riddle and Keegan Cooke the overall Ladies and Men winners in the Kingfisher FM 5km Beach Run whilst 16-year-olds Tarryn Els and Daniel Jones enjoyed victory in the Dis-Chem 1km Ocean Swim. Veteran swimmer (at just 29 years old), Natalie Goedhals, swam to line honours in the ladies’ 2km Ocean Swim with Wayne Jones extending his unbeaten run in the same event. Milé Vermaak and Juan Slabbert were the gold medal winners in the Swirlers 5km Beach Walk which is a beautiful scenic walk along the beach between Hobie Beach and the Beacon off Admiralty Way. In the Crickley Dairy Kids’ Beach run, Luc De Villiers and Kayley Pace won the 6-andunder age group with Josh Pretorius and

Zanri Black taking out the 7-8 age group. In the 9-10 age group, Zack Serfontein and Tara Sacke got the gold medal with Ceajay Bosman and Kayla Ferreira. All kids in the Crickley Dairy event receive a finisher’s medal sponsored by Sync Tooling & Project Solutions, a personalised photograph from Zports and a chance to win some awesome lucky draw prizes. Given the awesome beach weather which was enjoyed on Sunday, the finishers chilled BOS Ice Tea was welcomed by all as they supported Reach for a Dream and the realisation of 4-year-old Athandiwe Tyutu’s dream on Sunday morning. This dream was made possible through the support of Algoa Toyota Port Elizabeth and Series participant Lana Potter. Each race day the Series participants try to realise a dream for the Foundation in support of the youth of the Eastern Cape. Prize giving on the morning concluded with Michael Geel winning the R1000 cash prize. The series returns for Round 4 on Sunday, November 17, 9am at Hobie Beach Port Elizabeth. Once off online Series membership registration is necessary at just R50 on www.oceanracingseries.com. Entry fees for Series members are just R60 for the swim events, R40 for the Beach Walk/ Run and R30 for the Kids’ run.
