HE freedom to live one’s life without fear of crime was the central theme of Freedom Day gatherings on Monday.

The brutal killings last week of teacher Jayde Panayiotou (29) and Addo farmer Alan Clarke (62) led to a “Heal our Metro” Rally which was attended by over 1 500 people on the Donkin Reserve on Monday afternoon.

“We wanted to create a space where people

can reconnect with one another as human beings,” said one of the organisers, Dean Biddulph.

He and events organiser Renaldo Gouws arranged the rally in the space of a few days.

“There was no political motive for the rally or anyone making a profit. With all that has been going on in recent times I felt we are in such a low place as South Africans and that we have lost touch with our humanity. One just has to look at social media to see the hostility that there is among communities. And I had to think hard on where to start to make

a change,” said Biddulph.

The rally was not only paying tribute to Panayiotou and Clarke, but also to those who have lost loved ones due to crime and the wave of xenophobia currently sweeping across South Africa.

According to Biddulph, residents need to unite and begin taking back the country in making it the country that we all want it to be. “We are bigger than recent events; we are better than those who would steal our humanity from us,” said Biddulph.

Those who attended the event were encour-

aged to bring along an apple to be donated to charity.

“An apple is symbolic as it is not only something a pupil would give to a teacher, but also of the fact that a farmer was killed,” said Biddulph.

Another anti-crime campaign held on Monday, was a human chain against crime in the Northern Areas which is rife with crime, drug abuse and gangsterism.

The human chain was formed along Standford Road between Korsten and Booysens Park.

Concern over Richmond Hill SRA AFTER 5 years of planning, promoting and promising the Richmond Hill Special Rates Area (SRA) has finally received a still to be disclosed sum of money from its partner, the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM).

The Board of the Section 21 company are still in denial about their responsibilities until “everything kicks in”, fact is that money is being spent like there’s no tomorrow. Even worse, noone except a chosen few are privy to the expenses that are incurred at the moment.

SRA money is even spent on operational costs of the still to be dissolved Richmond Hill Residents Association (RHRA). Due to the fact that both SRA and RHRA are operated by default by the same individuals, SRA money will merely be allocated to the “changeover” period – the length of time at the behest of the said individuals whilst capital spending and operational expenses take preference over service delivery.

Sounds familiar? Well who can blame you when the SRA is in partnership with the NMBM as mentor?

But, the most serious concern at the moment is the utter contempt and disrespect Board members of this public company have for their shareholders. It is a disgrace that a Board who are supposed to be unbiased towards members and shareholders and who should at all times act in the interest of these shareholders and members are allowed to treat individuals with such contempt and disrespect.

Currently there is a controlled facebook page that is regarded as the interim “official” SRA page until a proper webpage is established. On this page the Board members and managers of this public company have declared open season on anybody and anyone who dare to disagree or render criticism (be it positive or not) towards their perceived goals.

Most shocking was a recent profanity and extremely derogatory comment made by a member on said page about an SMS comment in the

Herald of 7 April. The Chairman of the Board, in effect the CEO of the public not for profit company has chosen to “Like” the comment instead of taking corrective action.

In any public company the Chairman would have been fired for this despicable behaviour, but not in Richmond Hill. The MBDA protect this first little Frankenstein with everything in their power whilst the NMBM will not budge having finally gained complete financial control over an already questionable rates and tax system.

Heaven help us.

Response by SRA Director and MBDA SRA director Kevin Slattery, said in response, “The entire board of directors and management met last night (April 23) and we have consensus that all of these aspects were fully covered in the media launch that Mr De Klerk chose not to attend after being invited. We refute the allegations in the strongest terms, with the contempt they deserve.”

The MBDA’s marketing and communications manager, Luvuyo Bangazi, said the SRA directors had been voluntarily elected by the residents of Richmond Hill at a public meeting.

“One of the key deliverables of the SRA, with funding now available, is to strengthen communication with residents and all other stakeholders. The MBDA plays a supportive role.

“Any member of the community is more than welcome to come and talk to us. We are ready to assist/facilitate and resolve any issues if there are any.”

“We are not aware of any allegation against the MBDA, or rather no one has brought any allegations against/to the agency. We are confident that the processes followed were fair, open and transparent.”

“The SRA company is independent, and accountable only to the residents of Richmond Hill and not the MBDA.”

MORINGA 'The Miracle Tree' NOW AVAILABLE IN THE EASTERN CAPE

THE Port of Ngqura has introduced the country’s first automated mooring system, to improve port efficiency and safety.

The system comprises 26 mooring units, the last of which arrived at the port in March.

Transnet National Ports Authority chief executive, Richard Vallihu, said this procurement would cement the deep-water port’s position as a leading transshipment hub for the Sub-Saharan region.

“Procured from global engineering group, Cavotec, the mooring units were designed, custom-manufactured and installed to meet the specific environmental conditions of the Port of Ngqura. They will complement manual berthing teams at the port by stabilising container vessels on the quayside at the click of a button, reducing docking and undocking times from between 10 and 40 minutes to less than 10 seconds,” said Vallihu.

He said he was excited about the port being the leader of the pack in the African maritime industry by acquiring this technology.

Port manager, Mpumi Dweba, said Ngqura experienced significant long-wave effects and strong winds, particularly in the winter months, which frequently caused berthed vessels to move excessively and this affected cargo operations, safety and the port’s efficiency.

“This unique vacuum-based automated mooring technology is used in a few ports internationally, but will be the first in the South African port system, proving once again that the Port of Ngqura is the leader in deploying new technologies to improve port operations and the safety of vessels,” she said.

Technicians from Cavotec have been on site since November assembling and testing units at Berth D100, one of four berths at the Ngqura container terminal that will be equipped with the technology. Dweba said the pilot berth had been selected because it was most severely affected by the weather.

“We certainly look forward to fewer interruptions in the loading and unloading of ships, which we know will yield significant improvements in our operational efficiency and our ability to better serve clients.”

Dweba said local skills transfer was a central requirement of the contract and Cavotec would upskill local mechanical and electrical companies to provide ongoing technical support, maintenance and repairs to the port. In addition, Ngqura maintenance staff had received specialised training, and operational training would take place after the units had all been installed. Installation and testing of the 26 units is under way and due for completion at the end of August. Thereafter, the system could be rolled out to three additional berths at the Ngqura container terminal.

Correction: Richmond Hill SRA IN last week’s edition it was reported that the SRA would introduce three special teams of accredited personnel and private security guards for 24-hour patrolling to improve community safety, and a special two-way radio system on which the community could participate.

Baywest set to be ‘one of SA’s most advanced malls’ REPORTER THE Baywest Mall’s architects say they have made sure that when the long-awaited centre opens on May 21, it will be one of the country’s most enjoyable shopping and futuristic centres.

Port Elizabeth’s newest and largest entertainment and retail centre, which span’s the size of 22 rugby fields, is said to have quick-access crisscross corridors linking shoppers to both sides of the oval-shaped mall, one of the country’s largest screens in the food court at 24m², and restaurants with table heights to accommodate shoppers in wheelchairs, all part and parcel of what the architects say will be a shopping experience redefined.

An abundance of natural light and groundbreaking green building techniques are also part and parcel of the centre’s features.

The chairman of the firm which designed the mall, dhk architects, Derick Henstra, explained the psychology behind building a mall which would excite and entertain, rather than confuse and disorientate. The firm’s as-

sociate director, Joe Struwig, was lead design architect on the Baywest Mall project.

“We have a fresher, newer approach to retail, and the Baywest Mall is one of those exercises,” said Henstra. “It’s a futuristic mall.

We wanted it to be a timeless piece of architecture.

“We had to make Baywest visually appealing. For malls around the world, one of the most important aspects is the element of flow.

They are often not very legible or user-friendly, so we wanted to create a mall which was an absolute pleasure to navigate.”

The uncomplicated design of the mall, said Henstra, achieved two objectives: it ensured the mall detracted from its natural surrounds as little as possible, and kept shoppers’ attention on the reason they were there in the first place – the stores.

“The mall has a soft curve, so you can virtually see around the corner. It is also a tight race track, so it doesn’t feel like you are walking for kilometres and kilometres. There is also a crisscross, so you can cross over from the one side of the mall to the other very easily.”

out transferring the heat gain, meaning the air conditioning system is not strained.

Another energy-saving technology, LED lighting, is also used throughout the mall.

“This is all paired with an incredibly intelligent air-conditioning system which focuses on keeping the shops cool, with the spill-over cool air used to cool and ventilate the mall,” Henstra said. “It’s a clever way of being energy efficient.”

Being aware of shoppers with special needs was also an important part of the design brief, and for this reason Baywest Mall had been designed with wheelchair access in mind.

“There are lots of easy ramps for wheelchairs, and the heights of tables in restaurants and the food court are designed to accommodate shoppers in wheelchairs. It’s part of making the mall friendly and easy for everyone to access.”

Speaking of the mall’s inclusion of a Fun Factory entertainment zone, Henstra said, “We’re bringing back the enjoyment of retail.

Shopping is not just shopping – there is an element of entertainment. That’s what Baywest brings together.”

New festival aims to put the Bay on cultural map REPORTER IT’S all systems go for Nelson Mandela Bay’s inaugural annual premier cultural festival that is poised to be one of the biggest entertainment attractions on its calendar.

The festival will be held between July 3 and August 2 this year.

Speaking at the launch last week, deputy mayor Chippa Ngcolomba said the festival must raise the profile of the metro as the lifestyle and entertainment capital of the Eastern Cape, and ultimately feature prominently in the national schedule.

“We must position this metro as one of the most progressive performing arts centres encompassing music, dance, comedy, arts and craft in South Africa.

“We have to create a multifaceted festival to encompass various outdoor and entertainment events, thus promoting the city as among the best tourist destinations in SA,” he said.

This platform must showcase Nelson Mandela Bay’s diverse tourism industry and should substantially boost SMMEs and township economies, he said.

“As we move forward, the impact of this festival must be positively felt by our people. We need to develop sustainable business and investment opportunities and this must become a key focus for businesses and governments alike.

“Let us support this initiative and celebrate our creative artists. Let us put the Nelson Mandela Bay metro in

its rightful place. Let’s use this opportunity to reach out to each other and do things better for the betterment of our people.”

He said the launch of the festival was of great significance to the entire city and all its communities and cultural groupings.

“This event heralds a new era in which the municipality will establish closer links with local artists, communities and groups”.

He assured artists that the municipality would do things differently and work closely with them. “Our cultural activists, our creative and performing artists, and gifted children of Nelson Mandela Bay are scattered throughout the length and breadth of the country. Many of them are revered internationally.”

The chairman of Harmocept, Anele Mbasane, said his organisation was delighted to be the implementing and operational agent of the festival on behalf of the metro.

“Our responsibility is to make sure that the vision and the mission of the metro with regard to this festival and as espoused by the mayor is accomplished. Our intention is to make this festival a commercial success.

“A wonderful and beautiful city like Nelson Mandela Bay deserves such a prestigious property. This city cannot continue to sell itself short - it needs to find its way back to the top.”

He said the cultural festival presented a golden opportunity for that repositioning. This property must

translate into the tangible economic benefits for the township economy.

“This we shall do through supporting local SMMEs like catering, transport, accommodation, arts and craft, entertainment, printing; and creation of livelihood opportunities through short-term jobs.

Mbasana said the performance venues for the project had been strategically selected to give meaning to the above. Each and every cluster would have an activity.

To ensure that all or most participating groups were exposed to the opportunity, every attempt would be made to hold auditions as far and wide across the municipalities as possible. Owing to the magnitude of the envisaged project, performances, exhibitions, workshops had been spread all over.

Tigers Baseball Club donates to charity

The Role Models Foundation Imfundo Educare facility in Malabar Extension 6 received a donation of non­perishable goods from the Tigers Baseball Club which the team collected during their annual all­day club tournament at the end of last month. One of the aims of the tournament was to create aware­ ness of the needs of those less fortunate. The day was officially opened with Mrs Mzantzi Africa 2015 and a Role Model titleholder throwing the first pitch.

Donations help to cheer up young cancer patients THE Curro Westbrook school partnered with the Igazi Foundation last quarter to support children with cancer.

Pupils and parents from the school donated money, books and toys to make the lives of the patients in the Aloe Igazi paediatric oncology unit a little brighter. The contributions were put toward a bright new playroom for the patients to enjoy.

Cole Cameron and Zodwa Dube, representatives from the Igazi Foundation, visited Curro Westbrook in March to meet the pupils and receive the donations. They explained the organisation’s critical role in supporting haematology research in the province.

The patients were transferred to their revamped oncology unit at the Provincial Hospital on March 30.

VOLUNTEERS FEED THE NEEDY More than 80 volunteers packaged 10 000 meals on Saturday, April 18, at the Greenacres shopping centre for non­profit organisation Stop Hunger Now. It feeds 380 needy pre­school pupils in the Nelson Mandela Bay area. The ingredients for the meals were sponsored by Continental Tyre.

Metallica – The music comes Lego makes school science fun to Nelson Mandela Bay ROCKFACE showband will be performing the music of Metallica at Die Danskraal in Uitenhage on Friday, May 1, and at Poolcity, Walmer, on Saturday, May 2.

The showband, which has some of the country’s top musicians, is presented by Rockface productions and Eastern Cape Motors.

Organisers say the audience will enjoy all

the Metallica hits such as Enter sandman, Nothing else matters, For whom the bell tolls, The unforgiven and Whiskey in the jar.

Metallica, considered pioneers of modern metal music, are loved by young and old for their heavy but melodic style of music.

Fronting the band is Francois Hugo, a professional singer of many years standing. He has played in some top South African rock bands and has done many tribute shows, including most of the songs in the Metallica catalogue.

On lead guitar is Jethro Butow, a legend in the music business. He is arguably the top rock guitarist this country has ever produced.

He was inducted into the SA Rock hall of fame two years ago. Backing him up on guitar is a young player with heaps of talent, Arno Erasmus.

Hugo said, “Arno is young and hungry and wants to learn from the experienced guys in the band. He has come to the right place.

The rhythm section consists of two of the country’s top professionals, Deon Mattheus on bass and his brother Kevin on drums. They are not called the A-team for nothing.”

For the Uitenhage show, Pink Lippz will be the support act and will start playing at 8pm. The main show will start at 9pm.

SCHOOLS in Nelson Mandela Bay will soon be exposed to the fun and excitement of science and technology when the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University School of ICT introduces the First Lego League.

The league was created through a partnership between the US-based organisation FIRST (For Inspiration and Recognition of Science and Technology), led by Segway inventor Dean Kamen and the Lego Group.

The organisers say Lego helps with building self-confidence, knowledge and valuable career and life skills.

The league challenges children between the ages of nine and 16 to think like scientists and engineers. Alongside adult coaches, teams solve problems using research, engineering concepts, presentation techniques and robots.

The University’s School of ICT plans to visit 20 schools to create awareness of First Lego League and get interested children to form teams.

Natasha Saunders of Eagles Home School, the regional champions for 2013 and 2014,

says, “It is as though someone has taught me a skill as vital as breathing. I have seen the life value for myself, the children and the future of the country.”

The teams – from two to a maximum of 10 members – learn valuable skills while researching challenges facing today’s scientists.

In this year’s FLL Trash Trek, challenge pupils will explore the world of trash – from collection, to sorting, to smart production and reuse. The project requires pupils to engage with their community and find solutions to the refuse problems they face.

In addition to the research project, teams will design, build, and programme autonomous robots using Lego Mindstorms technology to complete missions on a thematic playing field.

The tournament takes place at the NMMU Indoor Sport Centre on October 24.

Throughout the year, the NMMU School of ICT will also provide free training workshops for the teams at NMMU North Campus. – REPORTER

Children at high risk of burn injuries SOUTH Africa has an extremely high incidence of burn injuries, with an estimated 3,2% of the population suffering from a thermal injury annually.

These accidents most commonly occur in densely populated, informal settlements where paraffin is the most used source of fuel, and cooking often takes place on fires and primus stoves on the floor.

These informal dwellings often consist of just one room, making it incredibly difficult to plan safe kitchen and sleeping areas.

Children are particularly vulnerable to burn accidents, and it is one of the leading causes of death and injury to young children in South Africa.

The Red Cross War Memorial Children’s Hospital in Cape Town is the only paediatric hospital in Sub-Sahara Africa with a trauma unit and a burns unit dedicated exclusively to children under 12 years old. The Specialist C2 Burns Unit treats more than 3 500 children with serious burns every year. Some 85% of the patients are younger than six and 98% are from disadvantaged communities.

The main causes of burn injuries seen at the Red Cross Burns Unit are hot water from tipping containers above the child’s head or at ground level, and from unattended fires.

When the skin is exposed to excessive heat, electricity or corrosive chemicals, the resulting tissue damage is known as a burn.

Burns are usually categorised according to the severity of the tissue damage: ) First-degree burns, which affect only the top layer of skin (epidermis), causing mild pain and redness;

) Second-degree burns, which extend to the layer below the epidermis, the dermis, and cause pain, redness, and blisters that may ooze; ) Third-degree burns, which involve all layers of the skin and can also damage the underlying bones, muscles and tendons. The burn site appears pale, charred or leathery, and where nerve endings have been destroyed there is no sensation in the area.

The appropriate treatment for burns depends on the extent of the tissue damage, the cause of the burn, and whether or not an infection is present. Infection is a primary concern, followed closely by dehydration.

A burn injury leads to a loss of fluid through the skin and potential symptoms include thirst, weakness, lightheadedness and dizziness.

While the burn injuries themselves cause tremendous pain, the healing process is equally traumatic. As the new skin begins to form, intolerable pruritus (post-burn itch) develops. This condition, caused by severe dehydration, can be unbearable for anyone, but particularly young children.

The itchiness causes them to scratch incessantly, which, in addition to the obvious discomfort, has the detrimental effect of destroying the newly-formed skin. This leads to additional skin grafts, sepsis and scarring, as well as longer hospitalisation.

Psychological problems due to post-burn itching are also common and can vary from an inability to sleep, fear, anxiety, depression and anger. . – REPORTER

Solar production feeds the consumption needs. Any surplus power is then stored in the battery bank to avoid any loss of production. If there is any surplus of solar power after the batteries are charged, IMEON will export it to the public grid (optional setting).

Evening Solar production is low during the evening, therefore power will be drawn from the batteries to cover the consumption needs of the household. If necessary, the IMEON Smart Grid Inverter will draw additional power from the public grid.

Market-goers will be able to savour a mouth-watering array of locally sourced organic produce, freshly baked goods, deli meats and cheeses, as well as craft beers and boutique wines, from about 30 exhibitors.

Inspired by the popular Wild Oats Market in Sedgefield and the Neighbourgoods Market in Cape Town, the PE fair aims to contribute to the ongoing rejuvenation of the Central area and assist with community upliftment.

The event will be held in a revamped rustic warehouse space in Alabaster Road and is currently scheduled for the first Saturday of every month but organisers hope that consistent support will allow it to become a weekly “fix”.

The market is the brainchild of Elsje Smuts of Trueblue Communication and Events and Elaine Watson of the non-profit organisation Love Story.

The two first met at Smuts’s Christmas in the Home market last year, where Watson was selling crafts made by disadvantaged women as part of Love Story’s skills development programme.

“I’ve always dreamed of PE having this

“We want to create an inspiring feast for the senses that keeps people coming back.”

She said every facet of the visitors’ experience had been factored into the planning and development of their concept.

“It must be an amazing experience from the minute they park their cars to when they exit the market with a bag of delicious treats.”

Smuts said picnic tables would allow friends and families to linger longer and share a wholesome meal together.

Although the market is at present limited to food items, she said the organisers would consider opening it up to crafters and other artisans in the near future.

Entry costs R10 per person, with a portion of the proceeds going to Love Story. The nonprofit organisation ministers to the needs of the destitute in Nelson Mandela Bay through a variety of upliftment projects, education programmes and feeding schemes.

Market-goers are encouraged to bring along any unwanted clothing or goods for distribution to the needy.

A limited number of stands are still available for interested exhibitors who meet the criteria for the market.

World Belly Dance Day is a day to enjoy and share the mysticism of this ancient art form while promoting the cause of a worthy charity. ) Raskhada will be raising funds for Izinja Animal Care, with their show taking place at the Londt Park Sports Club hall on May 9.

Izinja Animal Care’s primary focus is to improve the lives of disadvantaged animals in the poorer communities. Their main focus is sterilisation, regular dipping, deworming, assistance and advice on general health care and shelter and by working hand in hand with the community they believe the lives of the animals and their owners will be uplifted.

NMMU to host summit with renowned jazz musicians NMMU’s music department will be hosting the ‘Ingqungquthela’ or summit, which is a collaborative initiative between renowned South African jazz musicians, at the South Campus Auditorium on Tuesday, May 5, from 7.30pm.

Top jazz musicians Lex Futshane (bass) and McCoy Mrubata (flute/saxophones) have both enjoyed extensive careers in the music industry. In addition to their impressive performance pedigrees, they have played at innumerable local and international venues and festivals to considerable acclaim.

The concert will feature original pieces selected from albums recently released by both Lex and McCoy. The repertoire will also include well-known local and international jazz stan-

dards. The performance will be in a quartet format and the band will include Port Elizabeth musicians John Edwards (piano) and Lloyd Martin (drums).

Lex and McCoy said they were passionate about music education and their recently released solo albums exemplified this in that the recordings featured mostly young musicians, the aim being to mentor and develop future artists by providing them with a platform. Lex and McCoy will also be facilitating a workshop at the NMMU music department at 1pm on Tuesday, May 5.

Theodor Herzl School welcomes new campus head REPORTER THEODOR Herzl Schools has a new head of campus, John Alexander, who takes over from Stephen Fay. The change of leadership comes after more than a decade, marked by positive growth and success.

Alexander, 53, has held senior management positions at Edgemead High School and the International School of Hout Bay, both in Cape Town, and, most recently, Michaelhouse in KwaZuluNatal.

His new position is a homecoming for Alexander, who attended Wood-

ridge College as a boarder before going on to attain a sports science honours degree and then post-graduate higher diploma in education from Rhodes University. A geography teacher, he is passionate about rock climbing and model trains. He is married to Lea-Anne.

In her speech at the special farewell assembly, at which Fay was honoured with a standing ovation, Theodor Herzl head prefect Victoria Bolton said he had been “like water to the Theodor tree, maintaining life, soul and growth to our extended family.” She remarked on his “soothing personality, calm mind, adaptability and, above all, genuine

kindness.”

“Never stop chasing your dreams; strive to make your lives extraordinary,” was Fay’s parting message to pupils. He presented the school with a trophy to be awarded each year to the Grade 12 pupil “who embodies the Theodor spirit that ‘if you will it, it is no dream’.”

Matrics empowered and inspired at BWA Workshop REPORTER THE Businesswomen’s Association (BWA) hosted the seventh annual Port Elizabeth Grade 12 Workshop, held at Linkside High School on April 17, with a group of 100 matric girls invited to attend.

“Courage, leadership and achieving your full potential” was the overriding message for the workshop. Organisers said this is viewed as one of the city’s key initiatives in reaching out to young girls preparing for their future after school.

The inspiring and informative workshop, presented to learners from 10 schools in the city, covered topics from entrepreneurial spirit, to the pitfalls in the social media minefield, practical financial tips, as well as advice on dressing to make a good impression.

BWA chairperson Michelle Brown urged the girls to follow the organisation’s philosophy by passing on their newfound knowledge.

“At BWA we strive to lead the way for young-

er generations of businesswomen to develop, be empowered and inspired so that they, in turn, can leave a legacy for others to follow,” she said.

This year participating schools included Cillie, Linkside, Walmer, Booysens Park, Ethembeni Enrichment Centre, Alexander Road, Otto du Plessis, Andrew Rabie, David Livingstone and for the first time learners from the Ubuntu Education Fund.

Linkside High School learner, Chantel van Heerden, said, “This is an awesome opportunity for us to learn and grow. It is amazing to see that there are more opportunities than one would have thought. Don’t doubt yourself - you can do it.”

Thembeka Jana, teacher from Walmer High School, said, “This programme empowers our young girls who are our future leaders. We appreciate the organisers and sponsors who made this possible.

Healthy injection for Ford workers THE Ford Struandale engine plant in Port Elizabeth has opened a brand new medical/wellness centre to better serve its employees in terms of overall health and wellness.

The multifaceted new clinic, located in the administration block, was officially opened by Dr Bernd Kaemmerer, Ford Europe’s director of health service and Shaun Renze, manager personnel services at Ford Motor Company of Southern Africa.

The new facility offers a comprehensive range of medical services to employees in association with Life Occupational Health – a partnership that has been in place for the past 18 years. Consultations are provided with the team of onsite nurses, led by Dr Bonakele Qabaka, along with a specialised trau-

ma unit and dedicated ambulance to deal with medical emergencies.

A sophisticated audiometry unit has been installed to conduct hearing tests, along with a spirometry unit to evaluate lung function.

The centre also offers a comprehensive employee assistance programme through its partnership with Careways to support employees in a wide range of overall wellness issues. This extends to personal, marital or family problems, mental health and even substance abuse and financial and legal concerns.

Rally fans can count on championship thrills THE Ocean Basket and House of Steak rally will take place on May 2, starting at the restaurant’s premises in Cannon Street, Uitenhage.

This is the second round of the Algoa Rally Club 50km championship. The organisers said rally cars would be displayed in the parking area while officials and competitors were busy with pre-rally preparation.

The first rally gravel stage is at Jacht Vlakte next to the industrial park in Uitenhage, starting at 10am, then on to Motherwell adjacent to Daniel Pienaar Road, returning to Daniel Pienaar School at noon, when the rally cars will take part in a stage consisting of tar and gravel.

The school grounds will be transformed into a rally stage using approach roads and around classroom buildings in a display of car control and navigation in the quest to beat the clock and produce the fastest stage times.

These stages will be repeated during the day, finishing at Ocean Basket in the late afternoon. Competitors in the 50km challenge have honed their skills and fine-tuned rally cars to compete within seconds of each other, as witnessed in the last few rallies.

Neels Vosloo and Kevin Futcher, driver and navigator of a Toyota Yaris, are expected to lead the pack after winning the last Algoa Steel Rally. Bryan Heine (Datsun SSS), Johan Viljoen (Volkswagen Golf), and Ross Bartle,

Nico Smith and Rufus Neethling, driving Volkswagen Polos, are all in with a chance of producing an overall win.

Class contenders who score equal points for class wins and championship contenders are the Volkswagen Citi Golfs of Rikus Schmidt, Ashley Bezuidenhout, Stephno Pieterse, Melissa Hayman, Gavin Murphy and Ruan Gerber. The Toyotas of Jan Vosloo and Chris Johnson may just spoil the Volkswagen party.

‘This was rugby to dream about’ RELENTLESS RUGBY, that about sums up what we saw from South African teams at opposite ends of the country – Johannesburg and Cape Town – last weekend. Great stuff, though diametrically different.

Hands up those who remember H J Sanderson, the revered multi-year president of the Transvaal Rugby Football Union.

Wouldn’t he be proud of the Lions head coach, Johan Ackermann, and the way the burly former Springbok has brought the Gauteng franchise along. No doubt he’d be equally proud of captain, Warren Whiteley, and the never-say-die manner in which the No. 8 has brought Die ou Transvaal Super Rugby team along.

The Lions’ 34-29 defeat of the Cheetahs at Ellis Park was a match that also heralded a sparkling return to form of Elton Jantjies and the claim to more green-and-gold honours later in the year of himself and others, including the inspirational Whiteley.

P.E. Defence run riot against Motherwell Academy LAST Friday night Toshiba Old Grey had their first taste of PEFA Premier League football and ended up being 1 - 2 down in the contest.

Old Grey started well and held their own and were on the score sheet halfway through the 1st half with a goal from Adam Daniel.

Old Grey went into halftime 1 up.

Callies started dominating the 2nd half and in the 70th minute of the game Razaan Safedien equalised. Callies dominance saw Nkosinathi Ndamane scoring the winning goal in the 85th minute of the game.

Down the road at the Oval NMBM Municipality had no answers to Warriors’ dominance. Warriors made sure of the game already in the 1st half with goals from Nevan Gardner, Bhukhuthele Nquphe and Wayne Gilbert. Municipality failed to respond and hardly troubled Warriors’ goalkeeper. Saturday saw 4 games played.

On the Victoria Park Sports Club field Forresters and Central Acemates fought out a 2-all draw. Kweila opened the scoring for Forresters in the 35th minute to be followed by the equaliser for Acemates from defender Siyabonga Namba. Acemates took the lead in the 2nd half from a goal by striker Happy Sodinga. Kweila’s 2nd goal in the 81st minute ensured Forresters a share of the league points.

Out in Bridgemead Highbury had no answer to NMMU Madibaz’ dominance. In form Kieran Koert helped himself to 2 goals in the 1st half to be followed by Madibaz’ 3rd from Claudi-

us Sagandira. Madibaz continued their dominance with Kieran Koert rounding off the win with his 3rd goal and another hat trick to his name. Albeit that Hearts trounced Kwadwesi All Stars 1 - 4 Hearts found the going fairly tough with their 1st goal deep into the half from the penalty spot by Mark Upman after Roberto Formento had been brought down in the area.

Mark got his 2nd goal from well placed passes. In the 2nd half Travis La Mude got Hearts’ 3rd from a well taken free kick. The win was sealed after a Jason van Wyk shot was deflected into the Kwadwesi goals. Kwadwesi’s solid effort was rewarded when Hlumelo Dumse scored 3 minutes from full time. P.E. Defence ran riot against Motherwell Soccer Academy when they trounced them 1 - 8 on the Nobbs Road grounds. P.E. Defence scored 4 in the 1st half and and the remaining 4 in the 2nd half. Defence striker Senzo got a hat trick of goals in the 1st half along with the 1st of Aseza Ntlemeza’s hat trick. Malixole helped himself to a goal early in the 2nd half along with Senzo’s 4th goal and Aseza’s 2nd and 3rd goal of his hat trick.

This coming Friday night Callies entertain Highbury at Londt Park, NMMU Madibaz host Kwadwesi All Stars out at the South Campus and Hearts will face Motherwell Soccer Academy in The Valley.

Saturday Central Acemates will face Toshiba Old Grey on the Victoria Park Sports Club grounds and P.E. Defence host NMBM Municipality in For-

est Hill. The Diaz Club will see Warriors and Forresters locking horns on Sunday. Friday night games kick off at 20:15 and Saturday/Sunday games kick off at 15:30.

YOUTH REPORT The PEFA Juniors played their 2nd games of the 2015 season on Sunday 26 April at various fields around the Metro.

In the u 17 division last years league winners beat NMMU by 3 goals to 1 while Motherwell Academy narrowly beat newcomers Tools FC by 3 goals to 2 at the Nobbs Rd fields in Summerstrand. Hearts and United Brothers drew 2 - 2 in a closely contested affair.

A brace by Thai Jensen for Hearts saw them claw back from 2 - 0 down to draw the game. Mathew Kingwell pulled off some fantastic saves in the goals for Hearts to keep his team in the game until the final whistle. In the u 15 division last year’s KO Cup winners Hearts pulled off a 5 - 4 win over NMMU in an end to end game that saw some brilliant soccer being played by both teams. Motherwell Academy beat Tools FC by 5 goals to 1 while the Callies A team beat their B team by 3 goals to 1. In the u 11 Division Callies A beat Motherwell by 4 goals to 3 at Londt Park while St George’s A thumped Priory at the Union fields. In the u 9 age group St George’s beat Hearts 9 - 0 while Priory United beat the Callies Saltires 8 - 0. The Callies Bravehearts beat the St George’s Braves by 1 goal to nil in a close affair.

Little Ladies ready to race again REPORTER AFTER taking its first tentative steps two years ago, the SPAR Little Ladies’ Race has become an essential part of the SPAR Women’s Challenge family in Port Elizabeth.

The organisers said the “little sister” race, run annually on May 1, catered for girls younger than nine years and served as a curtain raiser to the main event, which this year takes place on Saturday, May 9, at Pollok Beach.

SPAR Eastern Cape marketing manager, Abri Swart, said the event was unique to the province, as none of the four other regional races offered something similar.

Swart said the 2.5km challenge had been introduced so that little ones could also partici-

pate and experience some of the fun of the 5km and 10km feature events.

“It has given little ladies an opportunity to participate in an event that promotes healthy living and an active lifestyle from a young age.”

While the race was not widely publicised, he said it had proved immensely popular since its introduction.

“This event has never been advertised. It has only been through word of mouth that we have received hundreds of entries and continue to do so year after year.

“It’s amazing to see how competitive the little ones are. They are so enthusiastic and really look forward to a fun day out,” Swart said.

He said it provided a perfect mother-daughter bonding opportunity, as moms could run

alongside their children and keep an eye on them.

The organisers were confident the event would not only continue to grow, but also extend the retailer’s outreach function.

“We trust that the Little Ladies’ Race will grow every year and that we will be able to give back to organisations within our community that are involved with assisting children in need.”

This year the Little Ladies’ Race will have its own charitable beneficiary, Cupcakes of Hope, which aims to raise awareness and funds for the early detection of childhood cancers.

Zuurberg mountain bike race adds luxury package REPORTER PARTICIPANTS in next month’s PwC Great Zuurberg Trek are set to enjoy all the creature comforts with the introduction of a luxury safari tent stay for the three-stage mountain bike race near Addo.

Organisers have brought in the “glamping” or glamorous camping option as the Zuurberg Mountain Village, which plays host to the event from May 29 to 31, has been fully booked by riders.

Race organiser Rob Hayter said the safari tent dwellers would enjoy the same spectacular views of the northern mountain range and a good night’s rest in a warm bed, as well as fine dining at the four-star hotel.

He said the 20 luxury tents each offered two single beds with duvets, linen and pillows, a camp dressing table, and a pair of comfortable camp chairs.

Newly renovated ablution facilities with hot-water showers would also be available on site, just across the road from the hotel, he said.

“With Addo right on our doorstep, the luxury tent gives one that authentic African safari experience that makes this area world famous.”

For its second edition, the 195km stage race has also partnered with South African National Parks to access rarely visited parts of the Addo Elephant National Park.

“On day one, we enter the park and descend

over 10km to the valley floor below. I believe this to be one of the most fantastic views in South African mountain biking,” said Hayter.

Riders would also spend more than half of the second stage within park boundaries and be amazed by the magnificent views from the top of the northern ridge of the Zuurberg, he said.

“To the south, one sees the coastline of Port Elizabeth with the citrus orchards of the Sundays River Valley below.

“To the north, it overlooks the vast Karoo all the way up to Somerset East. This side of the park is known for its ancient cycads and riders ride within two metres of some of these.”

On the final day, riders test their technical skills on the renowned singletrack at Hayterdale Trails before heading back up the historic Zuurberg Pass to finish at the hotel.

Hayter said there were very few races countrywide that could offer the diversity of terrain that Great Zuurberg Trek riders would experience.

“We believe we have a race that is challenging but not unduly so, with an abundance of comfort and convenience.

“For us it’s about offering not only a great outdoor experience but also a great one indoors.”

The event is open to 100 two-person teams with a limited number of entries still available.
