ORE than 5 000 construction workers and shop fitters worked feverishly this past weeked to add the finishing touches to the biggest and most eagerly anticipated shopping and entertainment complex in the Eastern Cape, the R1.7-billion Baywest Mall in Port Elizabeth’s western suburbs.

Leading to the mall, the R300-million Baywest road network not only links shoppers conveniently to Baywest Mall via the N2 freeway and Walker Drive in Sherwood, but also links Sherwood to the N2, alleviating traffic

congestion in the western suburbs.

Baywest Mall also boasted high-tech security, De Necker added.

“We have prioritised shopper security,” she said, adding that 230 state-of-the-art CCTV cameras with facial and number plate recognition software were placed strategically throughout the mall and the parking area which surrounds the mall on both floors.

“The entire access to the mall is controlled with security booms. We have also trained up

our security team and will have guards patrolling the mall and the parking area constantly. They will be on foot, on bicycles, quad bikes and in patrol vehicles,” said De Necker. All the stores would also be fitted with panic buttons, she said.

To further ensure shopper safety, De Necker said, hoodies and caps would not be permitted inside the new mall.

The mall, constructed in a record 24 months, opens its doors to the public at 10am tomorrow (Thursday), shortly after a VIP ceremony during which Eastern Cape Premier Phumulo Masualle will cut a ceremonial ribbon indicating the start of the mall’s operation.

At 10am sharp, ribbons spanning the mall’s eight entrances over its two levels will be simultaneously cut to allow shoppers to enjoy Baywest Mall and the grand opening festivities planned for the rest of the week.

According to Baywest Mall GM, Sonja de Necker, the mall had prioritised shopper safety, as well as ease of access for shoppers with cars and those using public transport.

Security breaches at shopping malls around the country have put a sharp focus on mall security, while in Nelson Mandela Bay commuters have bemoaned the lack of proper public transport facilities at major malls.

“Baywest Mall has a dedicated public transport drop-off and pick-up point, which we have tailored to meet commuters’ needs,” said De Necker.

“Not only is this facility at the doorstep of the mall, meaning commuters won’t have to walk far, but it is roofed and offers a muchneeded canteen and ablution facilities for drivers.”

We will be asking our patrons to remove their hoodies, and if they are wearing caps, to either take them off or wear them back-to-front, so their faces are easily visible to our security cameras.”

Another safety element employed is that of controlled parking, and deploying specially trained security personnel rather than car guards. There was an incremental parking rate for this, said De Necker, to ensure those accessing the parking were there to visit the mall.

“By implementing an incremental parking rate, we eliminate the need for car guards as our security personnel will be patrolling the car park,” said De Necker.

Parking for the first hour is free.

The size of the mall – the largest in the Eastern Cape at 90 000m² – meant shops would be open for longer, to suit shoppers’ needs, De Necker said. The Fun Factory entertainment

node and restaurants would open from 9am to 10pm, seven days a week, while the general retailers would open from 9am to 7pm Sunday to Thursday, and 9am to 9pm on Fridays, Saturdays and public holidays, she said.

De Necker, said the mall would be trading at between 70% and 80% occupancy when it opened tomorrow, with more exciting tenants opening their doors in the following months. By December, the mall would be fully let, she said.

The mall’s major anchor tenants who will be opening for business tomorrow include the largest Woolworths in the province, the first Checkers Hyper in the province, Edgars and Game. All four anchor stores will span between 5 500m² and 8 500m².

The games arcade Nitro Park, which will also boast a bowling alley and a bumper cars circuit, will also open tomorrow.

Outlets which will open in the months following the grand opening include Ster-Kinekor (mid-June); Toys R Us (July); Factorie and Cotton On (September); and Platinum Group stores which include Jenny Button, Hilton

Weiner; Vertigo and Urban (date to be announced).

The biggest private development in the province, the mall is the catalyst to an even bigger development – that of Baywest City, which with its lifestyle, commercial and residential developments spanning the next 10 to 15 years will mimic the iconic Century City development in Cape Town, which developed around the Canal Walk shopping centre.

The development has been a massive economic boost for the region, having created about 4 500 jobs during the construction phase of the mall (a more than 40% increase on the 3 000 direct jobs the developers had originally forecast for the project), according to independent auditors BTKM. Bloemendal community members say they are fed up with their situation after two kids were hospitalised with pneumonia due to their waterlogged homes after a municipal pipe burst at a nearby school.

The community said they have alerted the municipality countless times but no one has come to fix the problem.

Greenville Primary School caretaker, George Gerwel said the school’s water pipe burst weeks ago and water started flowing to neighbouring homes. “The leakage has caused a lot of problems in the neighbouring houses and the kids at the school can’t even play outside,” said Gerwel.

Gerwel said the school has been put under enormous strain due to the litres of water flowing out. The water also attracts frogs. “It is so dirty and kids run around the area. The municipality came once to inspect but never came to fix the problem,” he said.

A neighbour, Gaylene Jacobs, who stays in Burke Street and whose house has been damaged by the water leak, said her 6-month old baby was admitted to hospital for five days with double pneumonia because of the water leak.

“It is affecting us and it is causing a lot of damage to both the house and the children’s health. I am scared that this will cause irreparable damage to my child’s health,” she added.

Gaylene said the water flows into her house and turns green. “We are sitting with this problem and I have developed a pain in my leg because of this problem. We can’t live with water in the house. The kids are unsafe and we have told the municipality that something needs to be done,” said Gaylene.

Another neighbour, Fellen Dissel, said she has also had to hospitalise her 12-year-old child because of the leak.

“My child has asthma and she can’t breathe.

What can we do now? If the municipality thinks we are going to let this continue they are wrong. We are angry. Over 6 families are affected and all these families have young kids, not to mention the children at the school,” said Dissel.

While visiting the Greenville Primary school, the PE Express reporter tried to communicate with officials from the Education Department who were there to inspect the problem, but they refused to speak to the reporter.

Gerwels said the Education Department was only now coming to inspect the problem.

Community leader, Abdulah Johaar said he had called lawyers to take pictures and demand action by the municipality. “My 70-year-old mother, who can’t move, sits in her lounge with water running under her. I also have kids with sinus problems. I could give a whole list of people that have been affected by the water,” said Johaar.

Johaar said the drains in Burke Street are flooded and clogged as a result of the problem.

In February Die Burger reported on another burst pipe in Uitenhage that had been left unattended by the municipality with losses of 3 mega litres daily.

The leak was coming from a 45cm diametre pipeline.

DA leader in Nelson Mandela Bay, Retief Odendaal said this was a travesty as the pipe was huge and needed the municipality’s full attention.

“It doesn’t look like the Metro is committed to solving the problems with water leaks. It’s a travesty to note that even though we are faced with water restrictions in the coming weeks, there are pipelines which are pouring water out wastefully,” said Odendaal.

According to Odendaal, the Municipality lost R329 million on water leaks last year, with 40% of that in the July to November period.

“We supply 300 mega litres a day to the greater NMB and those litres lost in that pipe could go a long way,” said Odendaal.

No comment was received by the municipality at time of going to print.

Political interference becomes service delivery problem IN Wednesday’s PE Express (May 13) there was an article about the electricity department (Electricity boss is ‘victim of infighting’) as stated by Roland Williams (Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality Director of Communications).

You, Mr Williams state that the City Manager and team focus on service delivery and not political statements.

Firstly, service delivery is not being given by the electricity department and there is ‘political’ interference, because it seems those with contacts with the ruling party rule the roost.

It affects me as a rate payer!

I was without power for three days. When I angrily queried why nobody had been out to

attend to me, I was informed by a telephonist at the department that they were refusing to dispatch calls to artisans. This was because there was a dispute of which management, head of human resources and labour relations were aware, but they did not resolve it. They were angry and therefore withholding their services and have done so for approximately a month.

Please explain to me that if the NMBM has a

process in place for grievances, which all unions agree to, how can these issues take weeks to resolve with no outcome? Unless someone is stirring the pot!

Are the unions running the show or municipal officials? Or are their municipal officials running the unions for personal gain?

There is political interference, which then becomes a service delivery problem – my problem!

) We feel it to be so unfair. Most of us go back to work earlier after maternity leave and would then have to take a whole day’s leave to go and sit at a goverment clinic as the private stock is simply too expensive. ) Stand in a queue for working mothers is almost impossible; even if you get there at 7 in the morning, there are about 50 before you. Give it to pharmacies who don’t charge a levy, after all, who suffers at the end? The children! I am a granny and know what it is to queue with a baby. Please! Think again. ) Just another way of discrimination. I’m sure none of the health department kids go to a clinic. It’s such a shame that people making these decisions does it out of spite just to show they can. ) What an absolutely ridiculous decision. Government should be encouraging it to improve compliance and decrease the load on government clinics. Not everyone has the liberty of taking a full day off work each time a vaccination is due. I have no problem with a private clinic charging a fee for administering the vaccine. I bet Mr Kupelo doesn’t send his kids/grandkids to queue all day...healthcare should be PROMOTED, not discouraged.

NMBM builds drainage ponds to control stormwater LIZEKA TANDWA EVER wondered what the busy construction at the corner of Buffelsfontein Road and 11th Avenue is?

The Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality say they are busy building drainage ponds to control stormwater from Lovemore Heights to Walmer, which they anticipate will be completed around 2016, depending on funds.

According to municipal spokesperson, Mthubanzi Mniki, more than R60 million has been allocated over a period of two years for

the stormwater drainage and all inter-related projects in the Walmer-Gqebera and main Walmer areas.

Mniki said the project was needed to overcome the challenge of flooding.

“There will be a series of ponds that will be grassed with a concrete low flow channel. The ponds will retain and drain over two to three days,” he said.

Mniki said the project will include another construction that will support and be part of the broader drainage ponds development.

Mniki added that King Edward commonage will still be usable as it is still part of the

driving range lease. “We will plant trees – guidance will be given by our parks department. Residents need to be aware that the park will still be accessible, but the ponds will be fenced due to the water they will retain.”

The municipality said it had awarded the contract to Techni Civils, with the first phase near the airport already completed.

The NMB Municipality is building drainage ponds to control stormwater from Lovemore Heights to Walmer. At the back is Walmer Links.

Leopard geckos can be ‘just as loveable’ LOURENS SCHOEMAN THEY are cold-blooded and probably not as pretty as your average pet, but, believe it or not, they can be just as loveable!

This is how Ross Mardon describes the leopard geckos that she and her friend, Mark Drinkel, started “farming” with some two years ago.

The leopard geckos that hail from Afghanistan can set you back as much as R15 000, said Mardon, adding that they currently have about 200 of these unique pets.

“We wanted to begin some kind of hobby and we decided to go for the leopard geckos because of their uniqueness. There are only two breeders in Nelson Mandela Bay and we are hoping that more people turn to this hobby,” Mardon said, adding that it costs about R1 000 to feed the 200 geckos.

“We breed our own meal worms, but their diet also includes insects such as roaches, crickets and flies as well. They are nocturnal reptiles with the result that they must be fed during the night.

She said the leopard geckos are “really loveable.

“They grow very fond of their owners and they like walking on you and sitting on your shoulder. I have found that when you scratch them on the back of the head their eyes soon close and they fall asleep. They also change colour on a regular basis.”

According to Mariette Pressly, curator of reptiles at Bayworld these reptiles normally weigh around 105g and their average length is about 10cm.

“They differ from other geckos in that they don’t have the air pockets under their feet that allow them to climb up walls and windows, but have toenails,” she said.

Leopard geckos are just as loveable as kittens. This one is content to explore the outside world on the forearm of owner Mark Drinkel.

A PASSION to improve the lives of animals in the poorer communities of Motherwell and Wells Estate has led a Bluewater Bay couple and their friend to join forces and start the Izinja (dogs) project.

The project was established in March last year by Janette and Brian Wood and their friend, Hazel Grey.

It seeks to establish in township residents a sense of responsibility for and pride in their animals.

“Our main focus is sterilisation, regular dipping and deworming, and assisting and advising on general health and shelter. By working hand-in-hand with the community, we believe the lives of the an-

imals and their owners will be uplifted,” Janette said.

From April to December last, a total of 106 sterilisations and 40 kennels were issued. She said their aim for this year was 120 sterilisations, at a cost of R30 000. “We have already managed to raise a third of the money required.”

Brian said, “Ideally, no dogs should be chained, but the reality is that many are.

If owners insist on chaining their dogs, we provide a running chain, so the dog has more freedom.”

Another friend of the Woods, Penny Kruger, said that after seeing the dedication of Izinja to animal care, she and several other friends had decided to help by collecting old blankets and old kennels

that Brian could repair and donate to people.

She said they were also collecting plastic ice-cream containers which made water containers for dogs and used two-litre cooldrink bottles for the dip mixture given to the residents.

“This is a very demanding task and we are up to it, but we need sponsors to help with the sterilisation.

If we could get one’s co-operation or several people to donate to the cause, it would go a long way towards the care of these animals,” Brian said.

SPAR Wheelchair Wednesday set to roll again REPORTER SPAR Wheelchair Wednesday, an initiative of the Association for the Physically Disabled (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay, will once again take place in July.

This year’s campaign, now in its 4th year, was launched at the recent Spar Ladies’ Race where Spar, which is the naming sponsor of the event, handed over R250 000 to APD. Spar Wheelchair Wednesday serves to highlight the often unseen challenges wheelchair users experience in their daily lives. Much-needed funds are also raised, which help the organisation to continue providing life-changing services to people with disabilities.

By the end of August, 120 lives would have been changed through the campaign.

Participants in the campaign spend four hours in a wheelchair and complete various assigned tasks. Following their time in a wheelchair, participants then report on their personal experiences for follow-up by APD. A handover ceremony will take

place at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in August where 120 worthy recipients will receive wheelchairs from the participants who took part in Wheelchair Wednesday. A report highlighting positive developments from the 2015 campaign will be presented.

APD is encouraging businesses in Port Elizabeth to come on board and support this initiative. You can spend four hours in a wheelchair and change a life.

Zanoxolo, a 13-year-old boy who has VSD (a heart condition), fulfilled his dream of being a cardiologist for a day at the Dora Nginza Hospital.

Dr Nxele welcomed him to the team and helped him into the appropriate doctor’s apparel. He then familiarised Zanoxolo with a few cas-

es. During the hospital rounds, Zonoxolo had to report to Dr Pepeta, who is his role model. Dr Pepeta helped to diagnose Zonoxolo and is the reason he would like to become a cardiologist one day.

Reach for a Dream also arranged for Diego Jonas (16) to be picked up from the Livingstone Hospital by his favourite car - a white BMW. “One day I’m going to buy one like this,” said a very excited Jonas.

He was then taken to Greenacres Shopping Centre for the day and received his dream gift, a Sony touch-

screen phone. “Wow, I cannot believe this!” he said after receiving his gift. Jonas suffers from osteosarcoma.

Free concert in the park in Central THE music lovers of Port Elizabeth are in for a treat on Sunday (May 24) when the streets of Central will be filled with the swinging sounds of big-band jazz and other music.

The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA) and Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) are collaborating on the project to create an inner-city culture.

Trinder Square, situated directly across from the PE St George’s Club in Bird Street, will come alive with this free, picnic-on-the-grass style event, which is set to start at 12pm and continue until about 5pm.

MBDA spokesperson Luvuyo Bangazi said the agency aimed to use the arts to “bring the people of the city together to enjoy its regenerated urban spaces.

“The MBDA has invested significantly in upgrading public spaces to create a vibrant innercity culture, so we are hoping these public concerts in upgraded parks will become a regular item on the city’s entertainment calendar. Everyone is welcome to come and relax and enjoy the music together.”

Bangazi said, “Particularly after the discord that’s been felt in some parts of the country recently, this event offers an opportunity for social cohesion, and to bring the harmonies and flavours of Africa together.

“A variety of Central vendors will have their food for sale – local as well as from places like Ethiopia and Somalia. People are also encour-

aged to bring their own picnic baskets and camp chairs or blankets to make themselves comfortable on the grass,” he said.

The musical line-up includes the toe-tapping swing ensemble Two Tone, popular contemporary jazz singer Asanda Mqiki, the NMMU Wind Band, NMMU Big Band and Greenwood Primary School’s wind band.

NMMU music department in jazz lecturer, pianist and big band director, John Edwards, who has been pivotal in creating the event, explained that it was a combined initiative by the NMMU school of music, art and design, the vicechancellor’s office and the MBDA. Edwards said the concert would “articulate with the university’s desire to demonstrate its commitment to the growth and regeneration of the Central area.

“In addition to being a vehicle for social cohesion, the concert seeks to consolidate and strengthen links among musicians from local communities, schools and the university,” Edwards said.

Trinder Square was originally a wide pond used for watering cattle and horses, but also a popular picnic spot for Port Elizabethans. The NMMU arts faculty already has an attachment to the square, in that its artistic revitalisation last year was undertaken by fine art, craft, design and mosaic students and members of the arts faculty. The producer of the highly acclaimed Great Pretenders 21st Anniversary Show has assembled a stellar cast of musicians and singers for the show.

It includes Gypsy Latino, a seven-piece flamenco group in the style of the Gypsy Kings, with lead singer Bruno Hernandez emanating the exact voice quality of the original gypsy singer, Nicolas Reyes. The lead guitar player, Deen Moss, is one of South Africa’s top flamenco specialists.

Music ensemble The Queens will perform and sing a string of love and fun songs from the 60s era right through to the present time, covering various genres including jazz, R&B, contemporary and rock.

Jayson is also joined by The Groove Kings, a four-part harmony group in the true style of the Temptations, Earth Wind and Fire and The Jackson Five. They will bring to life the sound of modern pop bands like One Direction, Bruno Mars, and Justin Bieber.

NMMU Wind Symhony presents final lunch hour performance THE NMMU Wind Symphony presents Cinematic Soundscapes on Wednesday, May 27, as the final lunch hour performance on NMMU Music Department’s calendar for the first half of 2015.

Cinematic Soundscapes will take the listener on an intercontinental musical journey from one of the bastions of European artistic life in Scenes from the Louvre to the Italian cinematic classic Nuovo Cinema Paradiso by Morricone, said conductor, Gareth Williams.

Williams has been conducting and directing ensembles for the last 20 years and has been conductor of the NMMU Wind Symphony since the start of this year. He has experience in conducting various ensembles from instrumental groups to choirs, as well as big bands.

As co-founder of Twotone Music he and his wife, fellow NMMU alumnus and lecturer, have produced concerts and festivals with a spate of national and international performers that have always focused on using homegrown talent. Williams is lecturer in clarinet and saxophone at NMMU. He is adamant that the “NMMU Wind

Symphony boasts some of the finest young wind instrumentalists in the country.” Numerous players regularly perform as members of the Sasol National Youth Orchestra and The National Youth Wind Orchestra.

Grant Snyman (Clarinet), Tiaan Uys (Saxophone) and Zihle Ndika (Tuba) are part of the MIAGI orchestra that regularly perform nationally and at international festivals. Dylan Barker (French Horn) has performed as soloist with both the KwaZulu Natal Philharmonic and the East Cape Philharmonic Orchestras.

The programme will also include Chorale and Alleluia by Howard Hanson and some splendid Puerto Rican polyrhythms in a traditional dance called “Bambuco”. Finally they land back home with a medley “Freedom is coming” with guest vocal performers from TwoTone’s Talent Factory.

Madibaz triathlete heading for world champs REPORTER MADIBAZ’ Shane Kemp will take the next step in his budding triathlon career when he represents South Africa at the ITU World Triathlon grand final and world championships in Chicago in September.

Kemp, who will compete in the 20 to 24 age group, was selected after a top performance for Eastern Province at last month’s national champs in East London.

“It took a while to sink in, but it is quite a sublime feeling,” he said after learning of his selection.

Not only will it be the first time that the 21-year-old will be competing for his country, it will also be his first foray overseas.

“I feel proud to be able to have this opportunity and blessed beyond measure.”

The second-year interior design student became involved in triathlon after joining a team with some school friends.

“I borrowed road bikes so that I could train and eventually, after pleading with my mother for many months, she got me my own in 2012.”

His career began to take shape after he partnered with coach Karen Zimmerman, who has also mentored Olympic marathon runner Lusapho April.

He said he counted overcoming serious injuries among his career highlights.

Three years ago, he was knocked off his bicycle by a car while training for the national duathlon champs.

“I was in hospital for nearly three weeks and didn’t put on a pair of running shoes or cycle for the next seven months.”

Last year, while training for the same race, Kemp crashed among a group of cyclists that again left him injured and una-

historic motorcycles, breakfast runners and current superbikes, the Honda NSF 100 Training motorcycles for eight- to 14-year-olds will do demonstration rides at the circuit.

For the first time, there will also be a safety talk and track time for high school teenagers who ride their motorcycles or scooters to school. “PE Classic Bike Racing has decided to do this safety programme for the school commuters because there is such a high rate of motorcycle accidents happening daily in Port Elizabeth.

“The teenagers will receive safety tips from the older, more experienced riders, and also have three 20-minute outings on the circuit, where the experienced riders will show them the racing lines, and give them a taste of what it is like to ride their motorcycles in a safe environment.”

The entry fee for the track day is R50 for

school Commuter riders. They will need to bring their own motorcycle to the circuit, have an adult on hand to sign the indemnity form on their behalf, and also produce a valid driver’s licence.

They will need to wear long jeans, sneakers or boots, a shirt and a jacket, gloves and helmet, for safety reasons.

The cost for adult riders is R200 for the day.

Registration will commence at 8am.

There will be an ambulance on duty until the end of the programme.

Spectators are welcome, free of charge.

There will be catering caravans, and a full bar and braai service in the clubhouse after the event, when all the bikers can get together and watch the UK round of the Superbike Championship. Inquiries can be made and entry forms can be obtained at peclassicbikeracing@gmail.com. – REPORTER

Fun, efficiency and performance come with new Focus FORD has relaunched its Focus not only with a redesigned exterior and interior, but also new Ecoboost engines for better fuel efficiency and improved power.

Available in sedan and hatchback shapes and two trim levels, Express on Wheels spent a week with both the 1.0 Ecoboost and 1.5 litre Ecoboost hatchback versions of the new Ford Focus.

Exterior The new Focus has a lower, wider stance, with a new rear, bonnet, front fascia and grille.

From behind it is very similar to the new Fiesta - just a but wider and bulkier. A big, bold boot spoiler adds to the sporty stance, with chrome details adding a touch of class.

Interior Most noticeable is the instrument cluster, which still has a subtle hint of the standard Ford wing-shape design, but has been substantially decluttered. The storage console offers a new sliding armrest. The adjustable console accommodates a variety of bottles and cups with the capacity to simultaneously hold a one-litre water bottle and a 400ml cup.

and MyKey. Ford Sync with Bluetooth and voice control enables one to make and answer calls on voice command. All models have steering wheel controls for the audio and phone.

MyKey is ideal for parents who still want to keep tabs on their young ones despite giving them wings to fly. It enables owners to programme the key to restrict the top speed, reduce the maximum volume of the audio system, and can disable it altogether if the driver and passengers do not have their safety belts on.

The optional extras in the top three models in the range include an Active City Stop collision avoidance system, as well as Active Park assist.

Ride You don’t have to be a motoring expert to realise quickly why the 1.0 engine won the International Engine of the Year title for an unprecedented third successive year in 2014. And the Focus is by far not a small car to have to power around. The 1.0 engine does this without hesitation or a sigh and is eager to get going.

The only negative is that it is a bit jerky going from first to second gear, but thereafter it seems to smooth out. It offers a solid drive, is very responsive and accelerates superbly with little need for pressure on the accelerator.

The 1.0 is also impressively quiet and you have to listen closely for the roar that one usually finds in these small engines.

REGULARLY words are used to describe things and situations and just as often the true meaning of these over-used words is lost. But if you have ever looked for a true definition of opulence, then look no further than Monte Carlo.

The Monaco Grand Prix weekend is arguably the race most looked forward to on the calendar. It’s the visual representation of what Formula 1 can and should be. It’s glamorous, drenched in money and diamonds, daringly fast and dramatically out of place.

The history alone of the famous Monte Carlo race is enough of a tale to weave the most majestic of Formula 1 stories.

For around these famous streets the definitive legends of the sport artfully plied their trade. So rapt was the great Ayrton Senna with the Anthony Noghes circuit that he described it as the most extreme out-of-body experience he had ever had behind the wheel of a Formula 1 car, as if it were a sixth sense driving him around the narrow streets, centimetres from the barriers.

Even in the year 2015, this venue and circuit has lost none of its magnificent charm and remains the jewel in the Formula 1 crown.

This means too that qualifying is as important as ever. It could be the end before the weekend has even begun, considering the definite advantage that Mercedes hold over one lap.

But don’t consign anyone else’s chances to the scrap heap just yet. In 2009, Jenson Button’s all-dominant Brawn secured pole position by a few thousandths of a second over the lacklustre attempt of a car Ferrari slapped together that year.

Then there is the potential undercut on new Pirelli rubber. The supersoft is a

choice this weekend and the performance advantage of this particular compound has been nearly two seconds in some circumstances.

It has been the case so far this season that Ferrari are a lot kinder to their tyres than Mercedes and they will undoubtedly be looking to exploit such an advantage this weekend.

However, Ferrari’s advantage isn’t quite as clear-cut as that. Much will depend on the temperatures and it will have to err on the sizzling side of things for Ferrari to have a genuine leg up on Mercedes.

Alas, if no one else can stem the Silver Arrow’s dominance this weekend at least the rivalry between Lewis Hamilton and Nico Rosberg should be quite intense.

Last year’s Monaco Grand Prix was shrouded in controversy, thanks mostly to Nico Rosberg’s “mistake” in qualifying. It cost Lewis Hamilton the chance of snapping up the coveted pole position and put the fraying tension between the two on display for the world to see.

In 2015 the story reads a bit differently.

Although Hamilton starts the weekend in the lead of the driver’s championship for the first time this season, he is the one who will have to make the running around these famous streets.

Consider Rosberg’s dominant win in Spain and add to the equation that he has quite an affinity for Monaco and has won on the last two visits to the principality then it certainly looks like a leg up on his teammate.

The Monaco GP is literally the most regal event on the F1 calendar, given that the trophies at the end of the race are presented by the Monaco royal family. Now all we need to know is who will be crowned maestro of the Monaco streets.

Even the Sevens let us down (or) is Kevin his own worst enemy?

SEVENS RUGBY is the baby of the family, the little brother of the 15-man game – and it seemed last Sunday morning that the miserable week South African rugby lovers had endured might hopefully be set to rights in the 14 minutes of the quarterfinal of this year’s last 2015 tournament at London’s Twickenham Stadium.

But after a week in which the cream of SA rugby had suffered four defeats – Bulls 18, Blues 23; Sharks 18, Waratahs 33; Lions 20, Brumbies 30; Cheetahs 24, Highlanders 45; Stormers, a bye – not even the Blitz Bokke could rescue the situation.

It seemed so simple. All the Bokke had to do in their quarterfinal against Fiji was come away with a win, no matter how small, to be crowned 2015 Sevens champions – the reason for this being that their total for the competition as a whole could then not be bettered. But, the way things turned out, it wasn’t that simple.

Seemingly overawed by the occasion, the Bokke were out-thought and out-manoeuvred by the slick passing of a confident Fijian outfit who were 5-0 up within the first minute. What’s more but for a brief moment, with Chris Dry scoring and Du Preez converting, the Bokke were never again in the game as the Fijians pulled away to win 19-7. They had no luck in the Plate final either, losing 26-14 to New Zealand.

And that was that. Or, as the Americans are wont to say, “That’s how the cookie crumbles.”

WHAT to make of KP? It’s another tough one.

On the one hand it seems Pietersen has been somewhat cruelly handled by the England Cricket Board and its director, Andrew Strauss.

Though others might say the South Africanborn batsman has brought misfortune down on his own over-proud head.

Others, like British radio and TV host, Piers Morgan, don’t agree. Says Morgan: “Strauss,

his friend of 10 years, has knifed Kevin in the back – a stab by a petty little man.” Others blame England captain, Alistair Cook – a weak leader, they say, who didn’t know how to manage Pietersen.

Pietersen, on the other hand, says he feels badly hurt and let down because he was promised by Strauss – like Pietersen, Strauss is South African born – that if he delivered in county cricket, he would be considered for the upcoming Ashes series against Australia. What a waste of a special talent. Almost immediately after that “promise” (was it actually made?) Pietersen delivered a record-breaking, undefeated 355 in a county match for Surrey.

Who to believe? What a pity such a talent should go to waste. At the same time, no player is bigger than the game itself. Pietersen, one feels, is just a little over the top in what he expects of the game and the people who run it.

Eric Rowan was a tough customer. He always spoke his mind, but not even Rowan would have placed his wants above those of the great game of cricket. Pietersen is a fine player, but no player is greater than the game itself . . . a game that, after all, brought him the sports world’s attention.

Addo ready to welcome Great Zuurberg Trek riders ADDO is gearing up to welcome more than 140 mountain bikers from across South Africa for the second edition of the three-day PwC Great Zuurberg Trek, which is based at the Zuurberg Mountain Village near Port Elizabeth, on May 29.

The two-person teams will explore a 200km route that covers the Sundays River Valley and mountains to the north and south of the race village and includes sections of the Addo Elephant National Park.

Race organiser Rob Hayter said his route-building team had been hard at work to get the single-track for this boutique event into perfect shape after recent rains in the area.

“All the rain has ensured that our usually dry Addo area is looking beautiful. Preparations are going well and all will be ready for a great event.”

“We’ve removed the zigzag that everybody feared, smoothed the tracks and added an interesting new section down to Slagboom Dam.” On the 50km final stage, he said, riders could look forward to a piece of “single-track heaven” at Hayterdale Trails and a final climb up to the finish on the historic Zuurberg Pass.
