Refuse collectors back at work – for now LIZEKA TANDWA REFUSE collectors are back at work while their union SAMWU and the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro are in conciliation talks. The union applied to the bargaining council to conduct a legal strike after a deadlock in negotiations with the municipality last Thursday. Municipal waste collection workers had threatened to down tools because the municipality laste week failed to agree to their demands for back-pay and a special allowance. SAMWU regional chairperson Nomvula Hadi said in their closed meeting with city managers on Thursday, they were informed that the municipality had resolved not to meet workers’ demands. Hadi said as a result SAMWU had applied to the bargaining council to issue a certificate of non resolution which would enable the workers to conduct a legal strike.
SAMWU spokesperson Mqondisi Nodongwe said at this point SAMWU was in conciliation with management and if both stakeholders did not agree on the terms stipulated, they would go to arbitration. Thereafter they will be issued a certificate to embark on a legal strike by the bargaining council. In another department, Hadi said unions together with management had formed a task team to resolve the plumbers situation who embarked on an illegal strike two weeks ago. Hadi said they would also be striking if the task team does not reach an agreement. Municipal communications director Roland Williams said the infrastructure and engineering (I&E) directorate held a report back meeting on Wednesday, June 25 with staff to provide feedback on a list of items received the week prior. Williams said staff were seemingly unhappy with management responses and insisted the city boss address them directly and for management to commit to some of their demands.
“The team of managers who were present were unable to make any further commitments. They were refused exit from the hall. Eventually, after three caucuses they were released later on Wednesday afternoon said Williams.

845 schools waiting for furniture ALVENÉ DU PLESSIS LEARNERS at the Chubikile Senior Secondary school in Zwide again had to again write their examinations kneeling. Halfway through the school year this school is still waiting for furniture which supposedly would have been provided by the Eastern Cape Department of Education eight years ago. Here learners fight over broken chairs, bins, buckets and even paint tins - anything to not have to sit on the cold floor while writing exams. According to Mandla Mesusi, chairman of the school’s governing body, teachers and students moved into the grand school building in 1995. At first glance it seems as if teaching goes ahead without problems. “However, the appearance can be misleading,” Mesusi said. “We have written many letters to the Department of Education, organized numerous meetings and the parents even earlier this year closed the school gates. “So far there has been nothing but empty promises from the education department.” Mesusi decribed a typical school day at Chubikile as “rough”. “Teachers always have to keep the children out of each other’s hair because they fight over the few chairs and tables we have. But even what we have is dilapidated. It’s the furniture of the old school which we are still us-
ing today. “We need about 400 new desks to provide all 714 students with a decent seat.” Education department spokesman Mali Mtima told PE Express patience was needed by all concerned. “It’s really sad that our children are taught and even have to write exams in these circumstances. However we have negotiated with the school to use the excess furniture of neighbouring schools, but they flatly refused. We are working on providing needy schools in the province with furniture, piece by piece,” Mtima explained. According to Cameron McConnachie, a lawyer for the Legal Resources Centre (LRC) in Grahamstown, Chubikile is on the list of another 845 schools in the province still waiting for furniture. The LRC has been wrangling with the dpartement on this issue since 2012. “The money is there, the list was compiled, but they have asked for extensions so many times because their paperwork and audits have not been ready. “The latest was that the department would have delivered all schools furniture by June this year, but they again asked for an extension. “The department was ordered to get the list of needy schools with numbers to date and submit this past Friday.” McConnachie added that if the department didn’t comply, the LRC would consider obtaining an independent unit to take over.

Tryphina Mxadi (74) is juis só iemand.

It’s all in the mix
ODETTE KEMP
AT first glance it looks like a blur of shake and pour, but for a PE bartender mixing cocktails is an art - and now he has been recognised as one of South Africa’s leading “artists”. AJ Snetler (25) is one of the six finalists in die Diageo Reserve World Class Bartenderof-the-year competition to be held in Johannesburg from July 14 to 16. The competition, in its seventh year, does not usually include bartenders from the Eastern Cape, explained Snetler from behind the counter of the Soho Lounge in Richmond Hill, where he has been working as a bartender since 2014. “I had to compete in Cape Town with bartenders from across the Western Cape,” said Snetler. “The regional round consisted of four days of workshops and training. The competition is definitely worthwhile for anyone with a passion for cocktails. “ Snetler shares that passion. “Last year I
went to the Cape Town rounds with my colleague and my boss to see how it works, and I was interested immediately. It takes hard work and a lot of experiments to make good cocktails. Each part is a learning process.” Snetler is up against two finalists from KwaZulu-Natal, three from Johannesburg and one from Cape Town. The national winner will compete against the top bartenders from 57 countries in September, to be crowned international champion. This round will be held in Cape Town for the first time, and Snetler is ready. “Cocktails nowadays are not just a drink, but an experience. The stranger the ingredients, the better. “The process is very creative, because there are fine details to consider that most people do not think about. Even the purity of the ice can affect the taste.” Whether he wins or not, Snetler is sure the experience will have positive results. “I want to bring the lessons I learned from the competition back and teach my colleagues - then I’ll take them with me next year.”

18de-eeuse Skotse geoloog James Hutton se filosofie oor geologiese tydsverloop.
Donve Branch se eiesoortige keramiekwerk word volgens eeue oue metodes geskep.

Opera house reopens later this year ANNA PAUW PORT ELIZABETH’s historic Opera House will reopen its doors later this year as part of the Mandela Bay Theatre complex. The complex, which includes the Barn Theatre and the art school in the St Mary’s Church Hall, has been undergoing renovations since 2012. The Monde Ngonyama, head of the Opera House, oldest theatre of its kind in Africa, announced last week that it will take pride of place at the reopening on November 20. While excited at the prospect of an arts precinct in the city centre, Ngonyama was disappointed with Executive Mayor Danny Jordaan’s budget for the Metro’s new financial year which started today (July 1). According to Ngonyama no provision was made for the Opera House or its artists. “The Metro Municipality simply has to invest in the arts. There is no excuse. Art, culture and heritage are central to people’s values and development,” he said. To achieve the Opera House’s goal of elevat-

ing its surrounding area to an Arts Mecca, Ngonyama said street names around the area will be renamed after artists. So far Chapel Street, White Street and Belmont Terrace have been identified for renaming. It’s been suggested that these three streets be renamed for the Tony Award winning actors, John Kani and Winston Ntshona and playwright Athol Fugard. The Opera House production and cast of Inde Le Ndlela, which will be staged at this year’s National Arts Festival in Grahamstown, were also introduced. Inde Le Ndlela means This Road Is Long. An aging woman is at long last receiving an RDP House from the municipality. The municipality has taken a decision that the handing over of the keys to the elderly lady should be a glitzy media affair. Until the day of the official handover things seem okay. But on the day of the function the elderly woman, who lives in a shack, refuses to accept the RDP House. It becomes a tussle between the old lady and the City Mayor, the former standing firm on principles of freedom and the latter yearning for political mileage.
Inde Le Ndlela comprises a cast of 23 actors, dancers and musicians The play was written by Monde Ngonyama and directed by Xabiso Zweni. The music is directed by Bongani Tulwana and the chore-
ography was done by Makhosi Dingiswayo and Nicki-Anne Raypen. Inde Le Ndlela can be seen in the Grahamstown City Hall on July 7 at 10:00, July 8 at 14:00 and 20:30 and on Jul 9 at 16:30.

Little girl gets goahead for expensive treatment LIZEKA TANDWA PERMISSION to access very expensive enzyme replacement treatment has brought hope to the parents of little Alrene Scheepers of Booysen Park. Five-year-old Alrene suffers from type 1 Gaucher’s disease. It’s a chronic illness that according to WebMD.com is caused by an enzyme not working right to break down a certain type of fat. The fat then builds up, especially in the liver and spleen. The only available treatment for Alrene costs thousands of rands. After a year-long struggle to get her daughter the necessary care, PE Express spoke to Renee Scheepers right after the Eastern Cape Department of Health finally agreed to the treatment. “This is a long time coming and I can’t tell you how happy I am to hear that my child will
finally get the attention she deserves from the Dora Nginza hospital,” said Renee. Renee who lives in the Vastrap informal settlement said she is extra worried about her child’s health during winter. “She bruises easily and is always tired. It’s becoming more of a struggle now because it’s cold. We stay in a shack, and the effects of the environment are visible on her health everyday. It pains me to see my child suffer like this knowing there is little I can do. I wouldn’t wish this pain on any parent. But to see her smiling at me and her father gives me great comfort and I know we will be OK,” said Renee. While the Scheepers family is relieved that the health departement have approved their request, Renee said they will remain sceptical until the treatment begins. “They said to us that they have no knowledge of this disease and in order to administer the enzymes they will have to train someone. You can imagine that it will take time; this is
also a frustration to us,” Renee added. Eastern Cape Department of Health spokesperson Sizwe Kupelo had not responded to calls before going to print. In a letter to the EC health department, Alrene’s doctor, Johani Vermeulen, said Imiglucerase, the medication used in the treatment of Gaucher’s disease, is only produced by Genzyme. The cost can range from a little over R20 000 to R300 000. Vermeulen said even though the treatment seems expensive, the alternative lifelong regular platelet transfusions would be equally expensive. Vermeulen’s letter goes on to say that withholding treatment from Alrene is not in keeping in with the Child Act or her right to life-saving treatment. Renee said all she wanted was a safe home for her child and a chance to live a better life. “We need help and if anyone can help my child or my family I would really appreciate this,” said Renee.

Wêreld-kompetisie in Turkye deelgeneem.
Dit maak nie saak hoe belangrik my loopbaan as model is nie, ’n goeie opvoeding is nóg belangriker.” Dit maak natuurlik ’n vaderhart so bly,” skerts hy.

Ian is
School Sport Star
IAN Venter is a 15-year-old Grade 10 Pearson High School pupil and an avid swimmer. Ian has represented Eastern Province Aquatics (now Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics) regularly over the past five years, swims for Aquabear Swim Club and is coached by the legendary Brian Elliot. Early in February – merely a month before the start of most of the national events for which he prepared with great commitment throughout the season – Ian was admitted to hospital and had to undergo an emergency appendix operation. Needless to say, for most, this would have spelled a disastrous premature end to their swimming season as medical opinion suggested a six-week recovery period. Not so for Ian. Two weeks later, he competed in the Spar River Mile and managed a top 10 position. The very next week, he swam the Bellbuoy 5km Challenge as the youngest (15 years) male swimmer in the field, winning the men’s wetsuit category. On March 7 and 8, he represented Nelson
Mandela Bay Aquatics at the South African National Open Water Championships in Grabouw, Western Cape. Here he won a silver medal, coming second in the 3km and sixth in the 5km. Despite not being able to train optimally following the operation, Ian succeeded in making four finals at the South African National Level 3 Championships recently. He was placed sixth in the 100m back, fifth in the 50m back and sixth in the 200m back and still has the fastest 50m backstroke time in his age group in South Africa this year. Ian also competed at the SA Youth and Senior Nationals in Durban.
FOTO: WERNER HILLS

BayWealth boosts Animal AntiCruelty campaign REPORTER BAYWEALTH Management, a member of Stonehouse Capital has for the fifth year in a row, donated R15 000 to the Animal AntiCruelty League. Linda-Louise Swain, public relations officer for the Animal Anti-Cruelty League said the money has enabled them to hold a full weekend spayathon. “This will bring our figures up to 300 sterilisations. Made possible by the generosity and social responsibility of this caring company,” said Swain. “We firmly believe that neglect, abandonment and cruelty are a direct result of overbreeding and with the exorbitant cost of sterilisation, this donation is not only a blessing
to us, but to the many people who want to take the responsible action, but cannot afford to sterilise their pets,” she said. According to her, buckets of puppies are surrendered daily, many of them already sick and starving. “The Animal Anti-Cruelty League sincerely thanks BayWealth Management, a member of Stonehouse Capital and would like to challenge other companies to reach out and sponsor sterilisations, be it a mini-spayathon, full spayathon or individual sterilisations. Any given amount will make a difference to those who cannot speak for themselves,” said Swain. Companies who are able to help in this regard, can contact Linda-Louise Swain via e-mail on hinoon@netactive.co.za or phone 082 838 3988.

Fundraising Manager at Association for the Physically Disabled (APD) Brett Marshall says their running costs are extremely high and the proceeds from the Wheelchair Wednesday campaign help to sustain their meaningful service. The Ability Wear Job Creation Centre provides sewing and garment-manufacturing skills training and income-generating work opportunities to people with disabilities. The Ability Wear Job Creation Centre is the only one of its kind in Nelson Mandela Bay and provides a unique and vital service to the local disabled community. According to APD the centre custom manufactures and brands a wide range of clothing apparel for local companies, government departments and schools in and around Nelson Mandela Bay. The Ability Wear Job Creation Centre includes a Sewing, Screen-printing and Embroidery operation. “On-the-job skills training and knowledge transfer is ongoing in this centre. APD is continually looking to identify persons with disabilities with potential to receive
further sewing, printing, and embroidery training. “They have approximately 40 persons with disabilities working in the Ability Wear Job Creation Centre. This beneficiary group is mostly come from impoverished communities in Nelson Mandela Bay,” said Marshall. Ability Wear Job Creation Centre secures order for manufacture and printing of 15,000 Golf Shirts and Caps for Casual Day. Casual Day is a national awareness and fundraising event that takes place in September. Executive Director of APD Brian Bezuidenhout said, “APD is thrilled to announce that we have secured the order to manufacture and print promotional garments for this event. Bringing new business to Nelson Mandela Bay and making sure that it ensures work and income for the disability sector is indeed an achievement that we can be proud of.” Billy Paulson, Board Member of APD added, “We have seen an increasing number of people with disabilities, who have been trained and received employment in this centre begin to improve the socio-economic conditions of their families and communities. “This is proof that the centre is playing an increasingly important role in the alleviation of poverty in the disabled community we serve.”

BOOK REVIEW: MICHAEL SHAFTO
Author’s first novel leaves reader ‘breathless’ Birdseye by Maire Fisher: Publisher - Umuzi HERE’S something quite different; something to get really excited about. First-time novelist, Maire Fisher, has come up with a work so original – almost magical at times – that, swept along by the plot’s intricate twists and turns, you may well find yourself left almost breathless at times. Fisher’s handling of the intricate plot – and the manner in which she guides it along is, for starters, so self-assured it’s not surprising to learn the Cape-based writer has solid roots in the business of fiction writing. She lives in Fish Hoek and is much in demand by publishers as a fiction editor. “I’m very lucky,” she says, “to belong to a group of writers which meets regularly at The Grail Writing Retreat in Kleinmond.” It is in this area of the Cape that the drama, Birdseye, is played out in the fictional town of Harbiton, with much of the action taking place within the walls of a home built on some of the area’s highest peaks, suggesting an abode on the lines of a horror movie. It is known as Marchbanks – and the topmost apartment is the den of Mrs MarchbanksHall, a true witch, who rules its family inhabitants with an evil rod of iron. From here on she is known as Ma Bess, so named by the novel’s chief chronicler, young Bird, baby of the family and granddaughter of the aforesaid monster. Beautifully handled by writer Fisher, as early as the novel’s second page she leaves you in no doubt of the impending evil of everything Ma Bess touches. Courting Ma Bess’s eldest daughter, Annie, suitor Orville is invited to tea at the old woman’s top-storey apartment and he reflects: “The dragon met them at the door”. Then thinks, no not dragon – “more an ice-queen or a wicked stepmother. Beautiful but very scary”.
The story now is almost ready to shrug off its conventional third person mode, and for Bird to take over as chief narrator, and readers already will find themselves confronted with the real meat of it – a modern fairytale in which heroine, Bird, takes on the evil witch. Who will win? If you think it’s obvious, think again. For it isn’t quite like that. In a conventional fairytale, of course, good girl Bird would win at a canter. But how she accomplishes this in Birdseye – so aptly named, with its little heroine having, so to speak, a bird’s-eye view of all its characters, the good and bad – is the real beauty of the story. Here writer Fisher plays her trump card, using Bird’s 10-year-old siblings, twin boys Oliver and Oscar, just a few years older than the young heroine herself, as the tools of detective work through which we learn more about Ma Bess and the twins, of course. They had set off one morning and have not returned. At first no one worries. Not even Bird. The boys are known explorers. They will soon return with wonderful tales of the mountains’ secrets. But as time goes by the little girl becomes increasingly worried. Days, weeks, months pass. Why have they been away so long? What can have happened to them in the dark, mysterious caverns of the mountains? In Bird’s telling of it, this mystery – and the worrying factor of Ma Bess having no apparent interest in the boys’ fate – the little girl’s concern for her two heroes continues to grow. Soon her fears crystallise, becoming horrid dread that something far worse than their usual pranks is afoot. This truly is in the class of something new from writers like Anne Tyler and Jane Smiley. Fisher is aiming at that level and getting there fast. Buy it. You won’t regret it. Read it slowly. Devour it. It’s splendid. Something out of the ordinary.

Madibaz football promoted to SAB League REPORTER The NMMU Madibaz football team have been promoted to the SAB League following their performance in the annual Safa Nelson Mandela Bay regional league playoffs at the KwaDwesi football fields in Port Elizabeth over the past fortnight. The current PEFA champions went head to head with the 11 other group winners under the Local Football Association for two slots in next season’s Safa-NMB SAB League, which kicks off in the first week of September and runs through to June next year. In their first fixture en route to promotion, the Madibaz beat Winter Rose from the New Brighton Football Association 2-0, with both goals scored by Claudius Sagandira. In their second clash, against Eleven Wizards from Kuyga, prolific goal scorer Kieran Koert claimed a hat-trick, while Zantsi Fuzo added the final goal to register a convincing
SA Netball pro featured in sports book KHANYISA MELWA FORMER South African netball captain, Zanele Mdodana, has recently been named as one of fifty South African sporting heroes who will be featured in the first edition of “A Message of Hope” - a one of a kind motivational sports book. “A Message of Hope” is authored by Karien Basson and will feature sportsmen and women including Duane Vermeulen, Eben Etzebeth, Cornal Hendricks, JP Duminy and Maryka Holtzhausen. The 31-year-old NMMU graduate has an international netball career spanning 11 years, of which in two of those, she served as captain of the South African netball team. “What an honour it is to feature in the first edition of the book of hope!” she said. The book will share the stars’ favourite scripture verses, and personal messages of hope, as well as their profiles. This will be accompanied by photos from their personal photo albums – a feature which will set the book apart. This comes after Mdodana recently announced her retirement from international netball citing that she would like to step aside for the next generation of players. Mdodana promises that she has not left netball but seeks to make an impact from the other side of the court, as a coach. She will continue as an administrator in her position as Sports Manager for netball at NMMU, as well as the assistant coach for NMMU’s netball team.
4-1 victory. The Madibaz dispatched Nodefa’s Manchester United 5-3 in their last encounter to secure their spot in the SAB League. Having risen to the third tier of South African football, the university team’s promotion is a confidence booster ahead of the lucrative Varsity Football tournament, which starts on July 20.
“The Madibaz will compete against the top universities in the country with greater sport budgets, bursaries and established professional football network systems in their respective provinces,” said Madibaz football manager Mark Tommy. He said the institution’s success was indicative of a promising football programme but that it required co-operation and a joint venture with the private sector to build on the potential within the metro. Tommy invited relevant roleplayers within the private sector and non-governmental organisations to engage in this process to ensure that NMMU could compete with the top footballing universities in the country. ‘Going Polo against fracking’ HEILIE COMBRINCK
From the sky it must have looked like a giant
dust snake crawling along gravel roads near Graaff Reinet, winding through valleys and past the mountains of the Karoo. That’s what you get when the revitalised Polo GTi pumps adrenaline with its 141kW engine, heading on the Dassiesfontein road towards the farm Rietpoort close to NieuBethesda. It’s not just a test drive (what a pleasure!), it’s also to meet Rietpoort’s Douglas Stern, a well-known voice against the fracking of the Karoo. The new well packaged hot hatch Polo, powered by a 1.8 litre TSI engine (its predecessor had a 1.4 litre TSI 132kW engine) and 7-speed DSG transmission, hums its way so effortlessly, that the novice might think the Karoo boasts tarred roads. The Polo GTi manual 6-speed transmission version will soon be available in South Africa. Sliding open the sun roof one smells the crisp early morning Karoo air, indigenous plants like the kapokbos (wild rosemary) and katbos (wild asparagus), interspersed with smell of sheep and cattle manure. The aromas, the majestic mountains and the vast plains of this arid part of South Africa, begs the question why shale gas should be fracked here of all places where underground water reserves are the essence of life. Thanks to the heated leather seats the crisp Karoo air is neutralised. But the hot seat in which dynamic anti-fracking farmer Douglas Stern places the government and oil compa-
nies, remains. He is well-known for his fearless comments on fracking: ) “We don’t know who is running the country, the government or the gas and oil companies.” ) “Reclamation is not restoration, we must protect what we have” ) “You can do without gas, you can do without electricity but you cannot do without water. It’s the stuff of life.” Back on the road, the turbocharged all-new 1798cc Polo GTi, which Volkswagen for the first time offered with electronically adjusta-
ble dampers, is favoured for its “Sport” select suspension to enjoy the engine to its full capacity. This option however, is as life-threatening on the gravel road as fracking is to the Karoo. Thankfully the new Polo GTi’s handling was refined and the electronic stability system offers a smooth and stable ride. This contributes in the new Parabolicca 17 inch alloy wheels staying on the track. In his farmstead, Douglas explains that the Karoo basin is thickly laced with dolerite, a magmatic rock with a pinkish colour when
viewed on satellite photos. Cracks in these dolerite formations allow underground water to seep to the surface, forming fountains which provide the Karoo with its liquid gold: water. “Groundwater collects around dolerite pipes. If you are looking for water in the Karoo you have to drill in the vicinity of dolerite.” As the pinkish colour is proof of the essential Karoo dolerite, the strategic touch of classic GTi red insignia is distinctive in the new Polo GTi. It can be seen in the GTi logos, red strips in the radiator grille and interior design and features. Heading back home, the drive in the Polo GTi is exhilarating. I turn on the volume of the re-conceptualised infotainment system, equipped with CD-player, USB port, MP3, auxiliary and SD-card input for external audio source. The sound from its six loudspeakers is powerful and calms my thoughts, yet Douglas Stern’s concerns about fracking and water pollution mill through my head “Water…..it’s the stuff of life...”. A little bit more about the VW Polo GTi: . 0100km/h 6.7 sec . Top speed 236km/h . Fuel consumption (combined) 5.6 litres/100km . CO² emissions 129 g/km . TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE
Timetested Silverstone THE first ever Formula 1 world championship season took place sixty-five years ago in 1950. The British Grand Prix was the first official world championship race in that 1950 season and it remains, though altered, on the Formula 1 calendar. The high speed circuit of Silverstone and the famously quick sequence of Maggots and Becketts are where Formula 1 cars are pushed to the limit of adhesion. The circuit and the venue is a part of many teams’ history as some make their homes literally down the street from the Silverstone gates. It’s one that all driver’s love to race on. “I mean, Silverstone’s great in a Formula Renault 2.0. In an F1 car? Epic,” says Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo. The British weather is always in doubt even with talks of a possible heat wave. Yet, whether it is wet or dry Silverstone presents a stiff set-up challenge for drivers and engineers because of the assortment of low, medium and high speed corners. It is here two years ago that Pirelli faced its biggest controversy as tyres appeared to completely disintegrate. It prompted an almost instantaneous change to the tyre construction and a complete redesign of the rubber. While tyre safety has improved Formula 1 in 2015 isn’t exactly in a happy place. Yes, Mercedes’ dominance takes away a bit from the spectacle but they’re only getting their dues. They, like the rest of the paddock, were given a set of rules which they hit perfectly on the head. This is the way Formula 1 has always worked, in cycles. A period of dominance is not unusual as most Ferrari and even Sebastian Vettel fans will know. But what is detracting from the showpiece is what Pirelli has brought to Formula 1. The Italian tyre manufacturer will say that they are simply dancing to Formula 1’s tune and producing what they are asked for. But to
be able to complete 50 laps on one set of tyres is ludicrous. It leaves zero room for any sort of bold strategy which the 2012 and 2013 version of their tyres encouraged. At that stage the tyres were criticised for their fragility but what we wouldn’t give now for teams to have to think outside of the boring Pirelli box on tyre strategy. Hopefully, the recent addition of Michelin as a potential tyre supplier spurs Pirelli to supply a range of tyres that will add to the sport rather than detract from it. A driver that needs a good weekend is Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. The second place to Lewis Hamilton at the Bahrain Grand Prix feels like a long time ago and a few unflattering results have stunted the Finn’s momentum since then. But while some are questioning the 2007 champion’s future at the team, Ferrari team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene has ruled out making a decision “so early in the season.” Nevertheless, a solid run this weekend almost certainly won’t go unnoticed in the greater scheme of things. The passion of the British Formula 1 fan has never been in doubt. Come serious rain or come shine, nothing can stand in the way of these devoted enthusiasts. They have a lot to shout about too, as Lewis Hamilton is aiming at world championship title number three. A win this weekend, on home soil, would be big for the Brit too. To win his home Grand Prix will come with a sort of euphoria that could carry Hamilton all the way to that coveted third title and importantly extend his points lead. It is quite something to think that sixty-five years ago pundits of a different era sat down to write about the drivers of their time ahead of the British Grand Prix. It goes to show that while the times may change, where Formula 1 is, there the legendary Silverstone will be.

ADVERTORIAL:
Consider your needs when discussing performance upgrades REMEMBER the days when you had a vehicle for every occasion? You know, the MPV for school runs, the fast little coupe for Sunday breakfast runs and the 4x4 to tow your boat or caravan? No, neither do we. Today the rising cost of motoring – the cost of repayments, fuel, insurance and tax – has made it prohibitively expensive to own too many vehicles. This has made many customers even more discerning when buying a vehicle that will fit in their lifestyle and reliably deliver on all their needs. It is no surprise then that modern SUVs and double cab bakkies have become so popular. These vehicles offer far better performance than their predecessors, while they are capable of doing normal workhorse duties as well, such as towing your boat or horsebox. Unfortunately, a few weeks in the life of a modern driver are enough to expose shortcomings in such a vehicle. Think of those weeks in which your car had to make the school run, race to catch a flight at the airport and then, after two hours of high speed towing, slowly reverse your boat into the river for that Sunday jol. It is usually after a few of these weeks that owners call on a vehicle tuner to enquire about the opportunity for more engine torque, power or perhaps better fuel economy. Considering that this bakkie, SUV or other vehicle is the driver’s only car, extra power or better fuel consumption is no longer a luxury, but a necessity. This casual enquiry can often become a nightmare as the vehicle owner is confronted with unfamiliar
terms and often-conflicting theories of what one should do to increase engine power or improve fuel consumption. There is no doubt that modern engines and their electronic management systems make this a complex subject, but “complex” should not mean “unclear” or “risky”, especially considering the cost of modern vehicles. Steve’s Auto Clinic has been at the leading edge of vehicle performance improvement since it was started 32 years ago, and through its national network and strategic partnership with Uni Q Chip and Dastek Power it has also remained at the forefront of vehicle performance enhancement. Says Stephen Fischer, the founder of SAC: “When discussing a performance upgrade, you should consider a few factors. These include the transmission (manual or auto), whether or not you tow, your driving style and average speed. You should also think if you are an outdoors person or not and if you are worried about your vehicle’s fuel consumption.” These factors help the team at SAC, who have literally enhanced the performance of tens of thousands of vehicles, to best assess your needs and suggest a clear solution based on its knowledge and experience of successful upgrades. Stephen identifies three distinctive needs amongst vehicle owners: I want more power. This is the mantra of many performance enthusiasts and it is usually requested because the driver wants more speed and better acceleration. These upgrades often come at the expense of fuel consumption, but that is of little concern
to the driver, who is happy to adjust his or her driving style based on the vehicle’s power curve. I need more power. This is a slight, but very important difference to the first need. Think of that driver who has just returned from the Rust de Winter gymkhana and who could not climb the muddy embankment out of the river crossing on obstacle four. Or the horse owner who got stuck behind slow moving vehicles because he or she did not have the power to pass them safely. Often, says Stephen, they are approached by someone who wants the same power as their friend’s vehicle of a different brand. I want better fuel consumption. On the other side of the coin of the power brigade are those vehicle owners who find themselves frustrated with constant high fuel bills and an engine that does not live up to the manufacturer’s fuel consumption claims. These owners are usually more than willing to sacrifice a bit of power in exchange for fewer trips to the local filling station. “At SAC we meet with customers daily and discuss their needs. We have such a wide array of performance upgrades, engine enhancements, modifications and power conversions available and we use our many years of experience to offer the customer the best solution for his or her needs. We also share our solutions on our electronic content hub, which means that customers as far as Cape Town or Nelspruit benefit from our national expertise,” says Fischer. Who do you fancy to win the July? WELL, it’s that time of year again: time for change. Who, after all, on our side of the globe gives a fig which Australasian side wins the Super Rugby Championship? So let’s take a look today at the country’s greatest test of thoroughbred giggies, the Durban July Handicap at Greyville, come Saturday. Which of the 18 nags lining up awaiting the starter’s “off” of the classic race will arrive first at the winning post? A friend whose wife bets on names, irrespective of form, looks or breeding, took one look at the field and pronounced the following: HOT TICKET (“how can a horse with a name like that get beat?”), then the opposite, ICE MACHINE, and (“seeing everyone’s talking about this one”) MAJMU for third place. She’s so confident she’s taking the combination for the Trifecta as well. Okay, so good luck – and if this comes to pass you must promise to tell everyone where you first got the tip: the PE Express, of course. Meanwhile, last weekend Springbok coach, Heyneke Meyer, announced his 30-plus group of players for the immediate challenges facing the lads in the Green and Gold: against the World XV at Ellis Park this Saturday, to be followed by the Tri-Nations Championship between ourselves, Australia and New Zealand, and the one-off Test against Argentina. Then comes the big one, the World Cup, starting in England in September. There are no real surprises in the group named by Meyer. Though there’ll be plenty of debate about the chosen group, all of them nat-

urally hoping for a crack at the Cup the late Kitch Christie’s team won at SA’s very first attempt in 1995, the Boks winning again under Jake White in 2007 in France. Can the Boks make it a third triumph in England? Talk about a Trifecta – this is the Big One! World Cup rugby is a special kettle of fish. It’s not just tough. It’s tough to the nth degree – nail-biting. Former Bok skipper, Morne du Plessis, was always a protagonist of the exciting open game. “What I’d like to see is another element – some excitement, a new form of rugby, full of running and tries. I’ve got a feeling,” he adds, “it’ll be different this year. As is so often the case, the All Blacks will set the pace, running with the ball to score tries. If we want to beat them, we’re going to have to do the same.” A final word from the canny former captain and No. 8, who was team manager when the Boks resurrected SA’s rugby pride and did wonders for the fledging nation: “Plenty rests on Meyer’s shoulders, but I’m sure he has a plan. If ever there was someone who is methodical, Heyneke’s your man.” Wing James Small, who hit his peak as a player in that 1995 team, says: “I’d like to see more complete rugby, with greater emphasis on a more expansive game.” Finally Mark Andrews, who admits to being terrified going into that 1995 final in the unfamiliar position of No. 8, says: “If Heyneke can get the combination right between experience and form, we’ll have a great chance at the World Cup!” WORLD CUP SOCCER: Here’s a thought. Is Blatter about to Splatter? Most, it seems, feel he oughter!

Unique night relay a hit ONE of the most unique corporate running events took place last Thursday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium in the form of the Town Lodge Business Night Relay and proved extremely popular amongst the teams that were taking part. With a 3.5km route around the stadium and the precinct, the event offers companies a fantastic team building opportunity during the winter months with runners and walkers being taken as high as the 5th level of the magnificent stadium. At one stage, teams standing in the transition area on level 2 can follow the progress of their team mates running above them (along level 5) and below them (across level 1). Defending champions Gamble Pharmacy claimed the first round of the 2015 Town Lodge Business Night Relay on Thursday evening at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium amid strong competition from the Transnet and SPAR Eastern Cape teams in the initial stages of the relay. Despite being without their star runner, Olympian Lusapo April, who will be back for them in round 2, the Uitenhage team saw their 5 runners covering the 17.5km distance in a time of 57 minutes and 45 seconds to finish just under 2 minutes ahead of the Transnet runners. Bay ladies from Moore Stephens won the Ladies’ relay division. The Still Dreaming team from Bluewater Bay Athletics Club continued where they left off last season with another overwhelming win in the Walking category ahead of Town Lodge Housekeeping and the social team ‘One step at a time’. “This was my first time taking part in the night relay and it was a great route to run especially once up on the top level of the stadium and getting to look out over the field!” said Pagdens Attorneys team member Michael Beyleveld. “There are not many occasions where one is able to experience that. Running inside and around the stadium was definitely a great decision and I look forward to the upcoming races later this year with the Pagdens’ team.” The Town Lodge Business Night Relay will take place again on Tuesday, July 21, at the Nelson Mandela Bay Stadium and is open to running teams of 5 runners or walking teams of 3 walkers. Results and pictures from the first round are available on the Series website www.BusinessNightRelay.co.za
Nikita Robb from East London won the Ballito Women’s Pro presented by Billabong at Willard Beach in KwaDukuza on Sunday, producing an assured performance in the tricky one metre waves to outshine South Africa’s top women surfers.

A World Surf League (WSL) Qualifying Series (QS) 1,000 event, the Ballito Women’s Pro, is the first internationally rated event to be run in South Africa since 2009. The event offered total prize-money of R30 000 and coveted points on the QS rankings. Robb defeated Faye Zoetmulder (Port Elizabeth), local junior Teal Hogg (Umhlanga) and veteran Heather Clark (Port Shepstone) in the final to claim the R10 000 winner’s paycheque and 1 000 points. “It’s just such an honour to have won this event,” Robb said. “I came up to Ballito a couple of days early and just surfed every day. It’s been a long time since I surfed an event and I really had to get my head into it. “I started in Round One and had to surf four heats, so I worked hard for it. It wasn’t just a matter of one day and I’m getting 10 Grand, it was a matter of me putting the effort in the water, spending endless hours being the only girl out there and really getting to know the wave. I put the effort in and that’s what really counts.”

Plenty of highlights await fans at VW Rally REPORTER
rally but has not really been considered an event for the public,” says Joe Fourie, route organiser of the Volkswagen Rally. “This year that changes and it promises to be a fun and festive highlight which will get everyone in the mood for the action to come.” On Friday the rally start will see the gathering of teams at the Auto Pavilion in Uitenhage where the public can enter Volkswagen’s Place of Legends and Car at no charge and also meet the teams and see the cars in the run-up to the midday start. “The final stage on Friday at Aldo Scribante Raceway is sure to be another highlight of the rally,” says Fourie. “This will be a tough stage, a combination of tar and gravel which will test the competitors – whilst also providing excellent spectating opportunities close to PE.” Saturday will see three spectating opportunities at Port Elizabeth Oval Track Raceway
THE Volkswagen Rally 2015 will see the National Rally Championship competitors in action in Port Elizabeth and surrounds on Friday and Saturday, July 17 and 18. There are 12 planned stages of competition ready to challenge the teams as they aim to set the fastest times to claim victory. While the rally starts on Friday, the buildup to the event will allow rally fans to get involved. Thursday evening the scrutineering checks will take place at Tavcor Volkswagen on the William Moffett Expressway. The public will be able to attend the event, see the various rally cars at their best, meet the drivers and navigators, get some posters signed and take photos with the cars and teams. “The scrutineering process is part of the
(PEOTR) ensuring that rally fans get the most action while doing the least driving distance possible. “The Mission Road stage can be viewed from PEOTR as well as both final stages for the event,” says Fourie. “The last two stages of the event are super special stages which means spectators can see two rally cars tackle the stage simultaneously to add another dimension of excitement to the event.” These are just some of the highlights motorsport fans can expect at Volkswagen Rally 2015, with intense competition expected at round five of the national rally championship season. “As sponsors we have worked closely with the Volkswagen Rally organisers to ensure this event is easily accessible to the general public – not just hardcore fans, but for anyone who enjoys action and cars,” says Mike Rowe, Volkswagen’s Motorsport Manager.

‘PE Express’ grows to 100 000 copies REPORTER
P
ORT ELIZABETH Express, the biggest free local newspaper in the Eastern Cape, will from September 2, 2015 increase its print order even further – from 90 000 copies to 100 000 copies being distributed weekly. “The demand from our readers for more copies to be printed proves that print is indeed not a dying breed if a publication, while changing with the times, remains indispensable for both its readers and advertisers,” said Bettie Giliomee, regional editor of EP Media. According to Tasmia Ismail, general manager of EP Media and Die Burger the increase in print order was necessitated by the rapid housing developments in the metro as well as the growing retail market. “This is proof that we have and always will be the preferential local medium of choice for both our readers and advertisers,” said Ismail. PE Express is a publication of EP Media which has a footprint throughout the Eastern Cape with 7 titles publishing 280 000 free copies on a weekly basis. Publications cover the area stretching from Bizana in the east to Jeffrey’s Bay in the west with the inland towns of Mthatha, Butterworth and Uitenhage also being covered. Since the first edition of PE Express was published on November 16, 1983 the newspaper has held steadfast in good and difficult economic times, keeping to the promise made in the first edition of being an exclusive newspaper for all the residents of the Friendly City – from the housewife to the businessman and the sport lover. “As the face of the community changed over the 30 years, so has the PE Express kept fulfilling this promise, and to this day remains in high demand by our community,” said Giliomee.
The newspaper has also embraced the digital era with a big social media following due to breaking news of local interest being covered minute by minute as and when it happens. Its stories can also be read on the popular News 24 website. So what is it that makes PE Express so popular that in a time of social media bringing news to our screens and fingertips 24/7, people still want their local newspaper in their postbox on a Wednesday? “Ironically, it’s exactly the very thing that makes facebook and other social media so popular, that keeps a local newspaper going strong – the fact that it tells readers about people, issues and events which have, or could have, a direct impact on their lives. “And while social media is not always a trustworthy source of information, readers know that they can rely on PE Express to be credible and have the correct facts,” said Giliomee. PE Express is the perfect family read with an equal male and female readership and with over 70% reading all 4/5 copies per month. More than 80% of our readers receive their copy at home and read almost all of the paper. Close onto 80% of our readers are interested in community news and advertising promotions, and therefore strengthens our position as the advertising medium of choice for Port Elizabeth. Said Ismail: “Advertising plays a critical role for businesses in the PE metro and PE Express delivers tenfold on this. A total of 90% of our readers prefer their advertising in the newspaper and 80% have an eager appetite for sales promotions. Our readers travel an average of 6km to their nearest shopping centre and 62% of them do their main shopping on a Saturday. “We are very proud to be delivering an advertising source that is reliable, cost effective and delivers the responses that our clients have seen to be true for over 30 years,” said Ismail.
