Soos die mans die afgelope naweek tussen Knysna, Tsitsikamma en die Baai rondgewoerts het, het hulle klere vir minderbevoorregtes langs die pad uitgedeel, het Paul Engler, organiseerder, verduidelik.

Punte word ook gegee vir kreatiwiteit, en die spanne se vrygewigheid is nie tot klere beperk nie. Deelnemers se motors moes 30 jaar of ouer en minder as R30 000 werd wees om deel te neem. Mayor fast­tracks free wi­fi for metro

AYOR Danny Jordaan has given instruction that funds must be found, as soon as next month, to pilot the roll-out of free wifi in Nelson Mandela

Jordaan said last week that he had already instructed Budget and Treasury portfolio chair Councillor Rory Riordan to fund a budget to accelerate the Wi-Fi project.

“If it were in my hands the city would have had Wi-Fi yesterday. I did speak to councillor Riordan and I said I want a final answer by the beginning of October. I told him that he must

use the few weeks he has this September to find the money and I want a firm date by October,” said Jordaan.

If the project is rolled out, NMB will be the third metropolitan in the country to enjoy free Wi-Fi access following Tshwane and Cape Town.

Jordaan said areas such as Motherwell, New

Brighton, Linton Grange, Kabega Park and Summerstrand would be the first to be connected.

“This is a huge plus for students. This must be a wired city and we are making progress in this regard – not only to only talk about it, but also to do it,” said Jordaan.

Jordaan to revamp Metro policing LIZEKA TANDWA THE municipality’s safety and security department must join forces with the SA Police’s 10111 centre to fight crime in Nelson Mandela Bay. This according to Mayor Danny Jordaan, who said last week, as part of the metro’s Take Back Our City campaign, that he has already instructed the director of the Safety and Security department, Shane Brown, to look at this as a matter of urgency.

Jordaan paid a visit to the SA Police’s 10111 centre in Gelvandale last week. He said it did not make sense to have the 10111 call centre and the safety and security departments CCTV operations centre in two different areas.

“10111 must be a one-stop shop for information, for analysis and then action. Currently we have people who are viewing the cameras of the city at the (South End) fire station and the people who instruct the police to move to a crime scene sitting at the 10111 call centre.

Jordaan said they had made provision in the municipal budget to appoint metro police to strengthen and assist the police.

The mayor added that traffic officers on motorcycles needed to be better equipped to fight crime and needed to be connected to the 10111 centre at all times.

He said the traffic officers on motorcycles are key to giving information because they can reach a crime scene first, as well as give chase to suspects.

He said they would also look into the issues of a metro police force. “The metro police is something that we have to clearly discuss and we have to make provision in our budget for them. Then we should appoint metro police to strengthen and assist the police force,” said Jordaan.

‘Groen’ gebou vir kinders in Joe Slovo

Dié eens vervalle Silindokuhle-crèche in die Joe Slovo-township sal aanstaande week as ’n nuwe “groen” gebou sy deure vir die 85 kinders oopmaak.

“Die idee van ’n omgewingsvriendelike gebou is ook om die inwoners idees te gee oor wat hulle met herwinbare materiaal kan doen,” het Kevin Kimwelle, ’n argitek wat as vrywilliger vir die Love Story-liefdadigheidsorganisasie (een van die rolspelers in die projek) werk, gesê.

By die foto’s van klasmaats in hul unieke skoolgebou sit Bulethu Majoza, Onamandwa Nkomonbini, Asiphile Ngcingowo en Iminathi Bowoti.

Die “groen” gebou, wat onder die inwoners as “die gebou met die hoë dak” bekend staan, staan letterlik bo die res van Joe Slovo se opslaanhuise uit. Hoewel afvalmateriaal ook gebruik is soos vir die meeste van die opslaanhuise, meen Kimwelle die geheim lê in beplanning.

“Mense moet net anders begin kyk na goed wat hulle so maklik in die drom gooi,” het Kimwelle gesê.

Kimwelle verwys na die meer as duisend leë wynbottels wat oor ’n tydperk by restaurante in Richmond Hill versamel is. Die verskillende skakerings van die 1 500 groen wynbottels is in lyne gepak en vasgeplak om die voorste muur van die crèche te vorm. Palletplanke en plastiekplate is vir die res van die buitemure gebruik, terwyl buitebande, met kaktusse, die heining voor die skoolgebou vorm.

“Die ‘groen’ gebou is ’n baken van hoop vir my en elkeen wat in die township woon,” het Patricia Piyani, hoof, gister met ’n groot glimlag gesê. “Die gebou gee ook hoop dat harde werk beloon word, want die crèche het nie oornag ontstaan nie.”

Piyani het haar droom om kinders te help in 2011 gevolg toe sy ’n dagsorg vir agt kinders by haar huis begin het. “Ek het die kleine-kleine kinders in die strate gesien speel, en was bang iemand gryp hulle of maak hulle seer. Ek het geweet ek moet hulle beskerm.”

Die dagsorg het vinnig meer as 50 kinders van die gemeenskap bygekry. Die gemeenskap het in 2013 ’n oop erf aan Piyani geskenk, waar sy ’n skool uit plate gebou het.

Verlede jaar het Love Story en GM Williams Hunt Delta in Uitenhage saamgespan om ’n nuwe gebou vir Piyani te bou.

Kimwelle het met die hulp van Franse argitektuur-uitruilstudente die omgewingsvriendelike gebou ontwerp.

“Maar hierdie is net die begin,” het Piyani opgewonde gesê.

Mayor’s intervention for local sport welcomed LIZEKA TANDWA EP Rugby President Cheeky Watson has welcomed mayor Danny Jordaan’s proposed intervention of a total restructure in both the EP Kings and Chippa United administration.

Watson said he was proud to be associated with Jordaan who he said, had played a very proactive role in the city thus far.

“Jordaan has made a tremendous impact, with very proactive and innovative ideas. We will do anything to impact the city in a more productive way. Our talks are in the early stages but anything that will increase the economic impact of the city we will welcome,” said Watson.

This comes after Jordaan announced that he was in talks with the EP rugby boss and Chippa United’s Siviwe “Chippa” Mpengesi to integrate the two giant teams’ administration and help the teams financially.

Jordaan said he wants to reconstruct the business model of sport in the city to get teams that can compete with the rest – in this country, and the best in the world.

He said that it was very important for the city to have winning teams and a culture and desire to be in those teams.

“There should be an administrative reform at EP Kings and Chippa United. There must be a commercial re-engineering of where their revenue comes from and a reconstructed relationship between the stadium and these two entities.

“In sport, you need to take the matches and have a venue which is world class to sell advertising hospitality and match day revenue in order to generate revenue to support the team. You must then look at what are the major expenses and try to organise that,” said Jordaan.

Jordaan said he had also observed the challenges in local cricket. “The challenges for cricket are to ask the question if there is a

world cup today would they include their stadium at its current state? We have to look at St George’s Park and whether it complies with world stages and if there are any improvements required to bring it back to a world class venue. I have seen the reports and we are going to engage with cricket.

“As far as rugby and football are concerned, the stadium is the best in the world. The line of sight is uninterrupted; its perfect. Hospitality is wonderful, so we must ask how can we increase revenue and how can we have a more efficient administration and if you put the two entities in one company you cut the overhead cost of administration,” he said.

Jordaan made an example of international football club Real Madrid saying it was handling other sporting codes in its administration. “It’s no problem to have two entities with one administrative structure, cutting the cost of having two CEO’s, two finance managers, and two marketing managers because if you play in one venue there might be one marketing approach,” he added.

Jordaan said creating a sustainable revenue stream and an additional revenue into the sport with the best players was going to help the image of local teams. “Today’s sports people follow icon players and if you want to change the fortunes of cricket then get AB de Villiers, or get Victor Matfield to play for EP Kings and only then the stadium will be full...

“The Kings will play in Super 15 next year and they must have a better team and must have more resources. It cannot be that the players play without being paid because there are financial difficulties. We cannot close our eyes to these things. We have to engage and we did engage and we are going to come with a proposal as to how we propose to deal with this matter,” he added.

Mpengesi said they would have a second meeting with Jordaan next week to discuss his proposal and it was premature to comment at this stage.

Local campaign attracts attention across country LIZEKA TANDWA CITIES across the country have asked for assistance as they want to adopt the “Take Back Our City” campaign model, said cluster board general secretary Pastor Timothy Hendricks.

According to Hendricks, who is one of the “Take Back Our City” campaign organisers, while attending a recent conference with council speaker Maria Hermans they were

approached by leaders of different cities who were impressed with their model.

“It was a wonderful feeling to hear the speaker tell the conference that we have started with the campaign and after the conference we were approached by different people asking us to come and assist them in their cities as they have their own cities to take back.

“It was that wonderful feeling when you get hot under your cheeks to see that we started taking back the city,” said Hendricks.

Hendricks was speaking during a press conference last week for the campaign in which Mayor Danny Jordaan announced the second phase of the campaign.

Jordaan said their second phase of taking back the city was to work towards a cleaner metro. “The second thing we said we have to take the city away from is the dirt, and we have bought seven trucks with four already on the road,” said Jordaan.

Jordaan said they have also progressed from clearing the streets once every fort-

night to once a week.

“Those trucks you have already seen clearing up and when the seven trucks together with other trucks are operational we will have seen a cleaner city,” said Jordaan.

However, UDM leader Bantu Holomisa disagreed during his visit to the Metro.

During his visit toVeeplaas on Sunday, Holomisa said he had taken photos with his tablet and he would post these on his Twitter and Facebook page to show the problems of dirt and poverty in the city’s townships.

Healthy Mother, Healthy baby programme launched CHANDRÉ MASOLING THE Foundation for Alcohol Related Research (FARR) joined hands with the South African Breweries (SAB) and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board, and launched the all new Healthy Mother, Healthy Baby (HMHB) programme in Bethelsdorp last week.

“We don’t want to see people indulging in alcohol, while they carry the future,” said Sakhumzi Somyo, MEC of finance, economic development, environmental affairs and tourism of the Provincial Government, at the launch.

The HMHB programme is aimed at encouraging pregnant women to abstain from drinking alcohol, as it can result in their baby having Foetal Alcohol Syndrome (FAS).

This disorder can result in a child having

lifelong brain damage.

Leana Olivier, Chief Executive Officer of FARR, also attended the launch, and during her speech said, “Research around FAS is currently taking place in 14 schools in Bethelsdorp.”

The research should be completed by the middle of next year.

“There is no safe amount of alcohol during pregnancy; not even one drop is acceptable,” said Olivier.

South African Breweries and the Eastern Cape Liquor Board have joined forces with FARR in support of the initiative.

The programme also aims to educate and train nurses and teachers, on how to work with children who suffer from FAS. It also looks at means and ways to assist new mothers whose babies have been affected with FAS.

Baywest brings Rose Show to Bay for Spring REPORTER ORGANISERS of the inaugural Baywest Spring Celebration which takes place from September 19 -20, aims to recreate the success of the once popular Addo Rose Show for the Bay. “This is one of the reasons we have teamed up with Sherwood Garden Centre,” said Baywest Mall marketing manager, Samantha Hewitson.

“We are fortunate to live in a beautiful gardening region and we would like to celebrate that.”

Even with the good rains and full supply dams, organisers are advocating water-wise and sustainable gar-

dening techniques at the Baywest Spring Celebration, being held at Baywest Mall.

“The seasons have been kind and plants are starting to flourish,” said Sherwood Garden Centre owner Carmel Wolf. “We are fortunate enough for the city’s dams to be full, but we are encouraging gardeners to remain conscious of their water usage.”

“The festival schedule includes talks by the Bay Bonsai Society, the Orchid Society, and the Clivia club, as well as a children’s gardening workshop and flower arranging demonstrations,” said Wolf. There will be creative displays of plants, as well as plants to purchase.

Hewitson said the celebration was part of the centre’s plan to bring new and innovative activities to the city.

“We are continuing to make good on our promise to bring ‘big things’ to the Bay, and will be announcing our next big and exciting event later this week,” said Hewitson.

New isiXhosa Bible­based literacy booklet launched Jaguar­Land Rover, a division of Eastern Cape Motors, will be reaching out to the Schauderville Community by sponsoring a Dipathon in the area on Saturday, September 19. This event coincided with International Literacy Day. The book is especially designed for learners from Grade R to Grade 2, and is already available in Afrikaans and English.

Baaise ma van twee presteer in motorbedryf HIER in die Baai het Sue-Ann Lewack (39) omtrent “motorgeskiedenis” gemaak toe sy haar in ’n rekordtyd as kalibreerder by General Motors (GMSA) bekwaam het.

Lewack, wat haar opleiding in die kortste toelaatbare tyd (sewe maande) voltooi het, is ook die eerste vrou in Afrika-wat dié prestasie behaal het in die motorvervaardigingsbedryf, wat hoofsaaklik deur mans oorheers word.

Die sertifikaatopleiding duur normaalweg 18 maande. Akkurate kalibrering (kortweg is dit een van die belangrikste prosesse om die noukeurigheid van toerusting te meet) in die motorvervaardigingsbedryf is van kardinale belang en Lewack, ’n ma van twee, hoop dat sy nou ook die droom in ander vroue aangewakker het om ook ’n kalibreerder te word.

Tog is dit nie ’n maklike pad om tot by kwalifikasie te stap nie.

Lawack is beskeie oor haar prestasie: “Ek was baie senuweeagtig toe ek op my eie moes werk, maar ek het vooraf goeie navorsing gedoen en toegepas wat ek geleer het.”

THE beautiful Angelique Adcock, was crowned on August 15 as the new Mrs Port Elizabeth with first princess Bernadette Loock and second princess Yvette Peo. Angelique (43) is co-owner of Electrocoat and mother of two. She is engaged to Henry Calpton.

“I have two children, Jared (16) and Skye (13), and Henry has two, Rio (14) and Hunter (13) - we are a blended family,” said Angelique.

She was born in Johannesburg but grew up in Phalaborwa, and later moved to the Eastern Cape in 1990.

Hierdie is die musiek wat ek en my ma en my sussie saam by die huis gesing het. Nie omdat dit kerkliedjies is nie, maar omdat dit so mooi is.”

Volgens hom is Hymns ook ’n blyk van dankbaarheid vir ’n suksesvolle musiekloopbaan.

Sy passie is duidelik hoorbaar in elke snit op die CD en die nuanse van sensitiwiteit en crescendo’s lê elke lied se “siel” bloot.

“Ons leef in ’n tyd waarin alles dumbed down is. Mense kyk nooit van hul selfone af op nie en is meer behep met celebrities se doen en late as met die werklikheid van hul eie bestaan.”

Hy het gesê dat hy vroeër in sy loopbaan gedink het dat dit noodsaaklik is om soveel moontlik note te speel en altyd iets by te sit om sy musiek meer indrukwekkend te maak.

“Nou gaan dit vir my net oor die werklikheid van die musiek en die eerlikheid van my interpretasie. Ek stroop elke stuk tot die essensie van die emosie waarvoor dit bestem is.”

Saru Kings and NMMU students Sunridge leerders presteer promote sport at Van Der Kemp by kultuurfees REPORTER MEMBERS of Saru Kings Academy collided with a group of third-year NMMU Human Movement Science (HMS) students, to promote physical activity and sport at Van Der Kemp Primary School in Bethelsdorp last week (September 7).

This was part of NMMU’s PasSPORT to Health Project, which has been running since 2010, in which the students are challenged to raise

money and create a physical activity friendly environment at the school.

“The aim is to improve the sports and physical activities available for the pupils,” Prof Walter said.

“So the students go in to do a needs analysis, share ideas with teachers, plan an intervention and then manage the project. It’s a programme about putting the theory into practice and dealing the community on a practical basis.

“Many of our schools are suffering from poor infrastructure, often with

few or no facilities for the children to enjoy. This is a project to create something in the schools which promotes physical activity and to encourage schools to offer some form of physical education.

“The feedback we have had has been fantastic. Once the children had been exposed to some of the games on offer, the teachers said they had difficulty getting them back into the classroom.”

The Kings Academy members donated signed rugby balls to the Van Der Kemp scholars.

Volgens hul afrigters, Flippie Smit en Anton Willemse, was die geheim vanjaar dat dié klein rugbysterre twee keer per week

minstens anderhalf uur geoefen het. Dit het egter geduld gekos.

“Hulle is op daardie ouderdom waar hulle wil speel, en hul aandag word baie vinnig afgelei,” het Smit gesê.

Maar dissipline is elke week by hulle ingeskerp. “Hulle is dalk ’n handvol, maar hul talent en toewyding aan die sport maak dit makliker.

Vir hulle is dit lekker om die kampioene te wees,” meen Willemse.

The band once again consists of a group of consummate vocalists and musicians.

Andre Strydom, beloved for his fronting roles in Centrestage tributes to the likes of The Bee Gees and Neil Diamond, plays bass and is at the helm of this project as no amount of detail has been spared to recreate the beautiful Fleetwood Mac songbook with as much authenticity as possible.

Andre’s daughter and singing partner Caron plays the role of Christine McVie, whilst Lynne Cosme emulates the gravel voice of Stevie Nicks and plays keyboards in the band along with maestro “fingers” Fenlin Pitie.

The tribute to Fleetwood Mac places the emphasis on subtle instrumentation and textured harmonies.

Guitarist Alan Kozak plays Lindsay Buckingham, drummer Devon Van Rooyen is Mick Fleetwood and percussionist and acoustic guitar specialist John Dickin will showcase his guitar-picking style on several songs too.

Fleetwood Mac are originally a British blues band formed in 1967, which became a California-based pop group in the midseventies. They recorded the fourth most popular album of all time with their 1979 classic Rumours and went on to have a string of hits in the 90’s.

Songs featured in the show are mostly taken from their 1975 self-titled album, their 1987 album “Tango in the Night” and their live 1997 album “The Dance”, and of course, their epic 1979 album ‘Rumours’ on which the show title is based.

“Rumours” yielded a bumper crop of songs with enduring appeal, among them the Top 10 hits “Go Your Own Way,” “Dreams,” “Don’t Stop” and “You Make Loving Fun.” Other songs covered include the likes of Gypsy, Dreams, Say You Love Me, Tusk, Little Lies, Seven Wonders, Sara, Big Love, Rhiannon, The Chain, Don’t Stop, Go Your Own Way, Second Hand News, Everywhere, Landslide, Gold Dust Woman and Never Going Back, amongst other favourites.

Auditions for ‘The Tempest’ open REPORTER AUDITIONS for Shakespeare’s “The Tempest”, will commence on Sunday September 20 at 2.30pm at St George’s Park.

This production will be in the very capable directorial hands of Helen Flax - a regular both onstage and in the directorial seat at Mannville.

Helen is looking for a large cast of both males and females of all age groups.

Joining her on the greensward in acting roles will be stalwarts, Lesley Barnard

and Linda-Louise Swain - returning to the stage after a size-able break due to family illness.

The Tempest was last staged some 16 years’ ago at Mannville and Helen promises an interesting take on one of Shakespeare’s most performed plays. This production will be staged in February 2016.

Puma School Sport Star of the week is Tarryn Els CHANDRÉ MASOLING THIS week’s Puma School Sport Star of the week is Tarryn Els – a matric pupil at Collegiate Girls’ School, a Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics swimmer, and a EP record holder.

“I train with Mark Edge at the Port Elizabeth Amateur swimming club and swim for my school as well,” said Tarryn.

“I represent Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics at the Senior National swimming championships, held in Durban from April 13-18.”

She specialises in the butterfly swim, with the 200m being her main race. Tarryn received the gold medal for the 200m butterfly in the Youth elite age group, and the silver for the senior national age group.

“My time of 2.17.76 was an Eastern Province age group record for the 18-year-old group, as well as an EP record for the open age group,” says the Collegiate pupil. She explained that through this achievement she broke a record of 1985.

She also broke the record for the girls 50m and 100m, butterfly swim in the 18-year-old age group, and she also made the finals for both of the races.

“I also participated in the Level 3 National age group gala that was held during March here in PE, and received the gold medal for the 200m butterfly which was a new EP record for the girls 17-old-age group,” said Tarryn.

At the same gala she also won a silver medal for the 50m butterfly, which was also a new

EP record for the 17-year-old group.

“I have also represented South Africa on two occasions, in 2013 at the Junior Africa Swimming Championship which was held in Zambia, and in 2014 at the African Union Sports Council (AUSC) Under 20 games, which were held in Zimbabwe.”

Here Tarryn received the silver medal for the 100m butterfly, and was part of the relay team that won a gold medal at the AUSC.

Opel gives Mokka injection for MPV market AT the end of March Opel introduced its third new model, in as many months in South Africa, the Mokka, a compact SUV. As with the other two models launched by Opel this year, the focus in the Mokka is on German technology, high spec levels and lots of comfort features in an affordable price range – in essence showing German technology can be affordable and be found in a fun, stylish spec-laden vehicle.

And it seems they got the recipe right with the Mokka which was recently announced as the multi-purpose vehicle (MPV) most preferred by women in the 2015 Women’s Car of the Year Awards. The coveted Women on Wheels (WOW) Awards are the only car awards in South Africa that are decided by women. Thousands of votes were cast by WOW readers and combined with the judges’ votes the winning cars in 11 categories were chosen.

pete in two segments in the popular SUV market - the smaller SUV’s such as the Ford Ecosport, Renault Captur and Nissan Juke, as well as the bigger ones such as the Hyundai ix35, VW Tiguan, Kia Sportage and Ford’s Kuga.

The Mokka is available in four models with two trim choices i.e. the basic spec Enjoy and higher spec Cosmo with prices ranging between R298 500 and R335 500. All four models are powered by Opel’s 1.4-litre-turbo engine.

It’s available in a six-speed manual and sixspeed automatic versions in both trim levels.

Express on Wheels spent a week testdriving the high spec automatic version, the Opel Mokka 1.4 Turbo Auto Cosmo.

Exterior The Mokka is an attractive vehicle with compact and muscular (yet not too manly) styling.

In the Cosmo spec level it also has 18-inch wheels as standard.

I liked the bulky bold front as well as muscular side lines. I was not so sure about the rear, however. It looks a bit awkward with the top half of the rear, looking too narrow in comparison to the broad bottom part. But that could just be nitpicking on my part. This looked better in the silver and white models than the red models. Like it or not, this rear view does give it a distinctive look making it stand out in the parking lot.

Interior Inside it looks stylish and offers a whole lot of comfort and space. There’s a real quality in the look and feel of the materials. Black materials (cloth in the Enjoy model and leather in die Cosmo model) with a stitched leather look on the seats, dashboard and side panels, as well as chrome touches every here and there, add to the luxurious feel.

Three children or two adults will comfortably fit on the backseat and my children enjoyed the high seating position and towering feel. The high seating position also creates a lot of leg and foot room for the rear passengers. They also have the use of an armrest with cupholders.

The Mokka also sports a good-sized boot. The bootlid is not too heavy and can be opened and closed with ease and the height of the loadbed makes loading it easy. The spare wheel is stored under the loadbed.

The Cosmo model also has the IntelliLink infotainment system with 7-inch high resolution screen as standard. This is available as an optional extra in the Enjoy variant which has Bluetooth/USB, MP3/Aux input and Radio/CD as standard.

Ride All four models in the range are equipped with Opel’s 1.4-litre turbocharged petrol engine that delivers 103 kW and 200 Nm of torque.

The one test driven (Opel Mokka 1.4 Turbo Cosmo) was coupled to an automatic gearbox.

On the open road the gear-changing was sluggish at best when putting your foot down to overtake. It doesn’t like a heavy foot on the accelerator and the transmission was slow to react at times selecting too low a gear for the speed required.

In city traffic, however, the automatic gearbox was smooth and gave no problems at all.

To be fair - it is a city runner and not meant to be driven as a sports car.

A great positive is the feeling of spaciousness and height it gives, without giving you grey

hair in the parking lot.

With heavy rains experienced during the road test week, many potholes reared their ugly heads on our daily commute and despite the poor road surfaces, there were no rattles to be heard. It feels stable and well planted on the road.

The Mokka’s fuel economy is rated between 6L and 7L per 100km depending on the model.

Specifications Standard features in the basic Enjoy model include front and rear fog lights, daytime running lights, cruise control with speed limiter, speedsensitive power steering, steering wheel audio controls, a six-speaker audio system with Bluetooth, aux and USB input, a driver’s armrest, electronic climate control, a trip computer, electric and heated side mirrors, power windows, 17inch alloy wheels with a full-size steel spare and black cloth upholstery.

Additional features in the Cosmo are, among others, rain-sensing wipers, auto-dimming rearview mirror, automatic headlights, front and rear parking sensors, IntelliLink Infotainment system, reversing camera, heated front seats, rear privacy glass, 18-inch alloy wheels, leather upholstery, and heated steering wheel – which is a bit of an overkill for the local market. Even the exceptionally cold and rainy conditions during the time of the test drive did not compel me to turn the heat on in the steering wheel.

The Mokka Cosmo offers a comprehensive list of safety features, including six airbags, ABS/ EBD, ESP (electronic stability programme), automated high-beam lighting control, Isofix child seat anchorages and hill-start assist. All models come with a five star Euro NCAP rating.

Prices range from R288 500 to R335 500.

Mayoral Cup takes centre stage SCORE Energy League matches were postponed this past weekend in order to play and complete the Mayoral Cup Tournament.

The action started last Friday night when 1 preliminary and 6 first round games took place.

At NMMU South PE City got the better of Priory Shamrocks 2-0.

NMMU Madibaz on their home turf struggled against their nemesis PE Defence where the game ended in a 1-all draw. Madibaz took the honours winning 8-7 on penalties.

At The Valley Central Acemates and Warriors played out a 2-all draw where after Acemates won 4-2 on penalties. Hearts, on their home ground, got the better of Premier league rivals Toshiba Old Grey by 2 goals to one.

Londt Park saw Forresters edging out KwaDwesi by 1 goal to nil.

Premier league leaders Callies whipped first Division Tools FC scoring 6 goals with no reply from Tools.

Saturday the Mayoral Cup activities shifted to NMMU North and 2nd Avenue campuses. First Round action saw PE Home Rovers overcome Leeds United 2-1.

NMB Municipality in the last first round game took St Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s out in winning 3-2. Quarter final action then started in all earnest when Forresters and Hearts ended up nil-nil after normal time.

Forresters clinched the tie 4-3 on penalties. NMMU Madibaz were too strong for PE Home Rovers clinching the tie in winning 4-2. Callies and old rivals PE City locked horns; however City put up little resistance with Callies taking the honours by 4 goals to

Central Acemates and NMB Municipality fought out the last quarter final game with Acemates edging Municipality 1-0. Semi-final time came when Forresters gave NMMU Madibaz a run for their money. Forresters fought hard and were leading 2-1 with about 4 minutes to go.

Madibaz threw everything at Forresters and were awarded with a second goal to take the game to penalties.

Penalties here were also a ding dong affair where Madibaz eventually triumphed by 5 penalties to four. Central Acemates and Callies tackled each other in the second semi-final.

Callies scored early in the first half and some astute defending saw them winning 1-nil and joining NMMU Madibaz in the final.

The final turned out to be a very competitive affair with both Callies and Madibaz launching attack after attack. Callies scored with approximately 3 minutes to go in the first half.

Callies defended this lead and were crowned PEFA Mayoral Cup champions 2015.

Callies will now represent PEFA in the Regional tournament at the end of October.

Youth Report The PEFA u/13 and u/15 divisions played the PEFA leg of the Mayoral Cup at the NMMU fields on Sunday.

The semi-finals of the u/13 division saw Mabayibone take on Callies in a thrilling game that ended 0-0 after full time. The game was decided on penalties which Mabayibone won 3-1.

In the other semi-final Motherwell

Academy came back from a goal behind to beat St Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s 3-1.

The final between Motherwell and Mabayibone produced some exciting football which saw Motherwell emerge victorious by 3 goals to 2. Qhama Mati (2) and Sive Masabalala both found the net for Motherwell to give their team the victory.

Motherwell also made it through to the final in the u/15 age group but came up against a well-drilled Hearts team who won 1-0 from a superb goal by right wing Chris Yerolemou.

To reach the final Hearts beat NMMU by 1 goal to nil in the quarter final, and beat KwaDwesi by 3 goals to nil in the semi-final. Cole Schoeman (2), Rizaan Davis and Runaldo Pedro all scored for Hearts along the way.

The last league games of the u/9 season were also played on the weekend, with Callies Highlanders beating Priory Rangers 3-0 to take the league title, while St Georgeâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Aces beat the Hearts Lads 3-0 to end up in second place.

On Sunday, September 20, the finals of the PEFA Junior Score Energy Knock Out Cup take place at the Oval and promise to provide some great soccer to end of the PEFA Junior season.

HEREâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;S something that may surprise some.

One newspaper column, as the kickoff of the Rugby World Cap draws ever nearer, has come up with some heartening statistics.

Did you know that RWC records show that since re-entering the international rugby scene from isolation in 1995, the Springboks have the best overall success rate in the tournament?

From that date the figures show the Boks registering 25 wins from 29 matches. Furthermore Francois Pienaarâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s Boks did it first time out that year after being allowed back into the rugby fold that memorable year.

However, before we get carried away, since then when South Africa beat New Zealand â&#x20AC;&#x201C; courtesy of a Joel Stransky drop-goal in extra time â&#x20AC;&#x201C; the Boks have not beaten either the Wallabies or the All Blacks in the World Cup. No doubt one of the many cares coach, Heyneke Meyer, has on his mind as he marshals his troops in readiness for the first RWC appointment with Japan in Brighton next Saturday, is that very fact. Indeed there could well be no easy road for Meyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s lads with the vagaries of the draw suggesting the South Africans may well see (always supposing they reach that stage) themselves facing first the Wallabies in the quarterfinals and the All Blacks the very next week in the semis.

Itâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s no easy job being the coach of a World Cup side. Right now, who by choice would be in Meyerâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s rugby boots? Not many. One of the countryâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s major Sunday newspapers ran a lengthy, page dominating piece head-

lined, â&#x20AC;&#x153;Meyer has scuppered the Boks chancesâ&#x20AC;?. The writer clearly does not think much of the Bok coachâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;s skills â&#x20AC;&#x201C; and attacks him from several viewpoints.

He accuses Meyer of favouring hometown Bulls players. He also attacks the selection of captain, Jean de Villiers, and vice-captain, Victor Matfield, among others, who are â&#x20AC;&#x153;past their bestâ&#x20AC;? and should be out in the paddock munching grass.

Why, the piece asks, has a player like Matfield, who officially retired a year ago be enticed back? Much the same, the writer alleges, can be said of Ruan Pienaar and Morne Steyn, Schalk Britz and Zane Kirchner.

The writer adds that Meyer â&#x20AC;&#x153;sees the world through blue-tinted spectaclesâ&#x20AC;?.

Inner City Enduro first for the Bay SOUTH Africa’s first ever Inner City Enduro (ICE) takes place in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, September 26, as part of the annual Urban Run Festival, hosted by the MBDA to highlight urban renewal, and will include multiple world extreme enduro champion David Knight.

ICE is what is capturing the imagination of the Extreme Enduro Riders and Fans alike all over the world and is about to set the streets of the PE CBD alight as the World champion takes on SA’s best in a last man standing format. Using natural and man-made obstacles around the historic

Fort Frederick, the crowds will be wowed by a spectacle being billed as the David vs Goliath of enduro racing.

Knight, a three-time world champion enduro rider from the Isle of Man, will take on the likes of Tim Young, Altus de Wet, James Hodsen, Brian Capper, Kyle Flanagan, Scott Bouverie, Graham Hedgecock, Wade Young, Kyle Erasmus, Chase Orsmond, Dwayne Kleynhnans, Jody Engelbrecht, Richard van der Westhuizen and Taki Bogiages. There will also be an ICE support class for any local rider who feels he is “Man” enough to take on the route.

“Bringing the action to the people is a worldwide trend and ICE is all about creating a spectator frenzy in the CBD,” said Red Cherry Adventures race organiser Mike Glover. “With a 1.3km loop and massive man-made and natural obstacles, the spectators are guaranteed to be entertained.”

The ICE event forms part of the annual Urban Run weekend taking place from the Donkin Reserve and features Redbull extreme rider Brian Capper giving an exhibition between 10:15am and 10:30am. The enduro riders will practise on the route from 11:30am whilst the kids’ Urban Run for

those 14 years and under starts on the Donkin at 12 noon. Capper returns to the Donkin for a second extreme exhibition at 12:45pm before the kids’ urban run prize giving with Moaz the Clown. The first round of the ICE eliminator starts at 1:30pm and should not be missed. Prize giving at Fort Frederick for the enduro riders takes place at 5:30pm from the Redbull stage.

Scores to settle in Singapore FORMULA 1 has swopped the sprawling European country side for the city lights of Singapore as the paddock readies for the thirteenth round of the championship.

As far as street races go the Singapore Grand Prix doesn’t have that much in common with its so-called Monegasque counterpart. While the Monte Carlo Grand Prix is steeped in regal history Singapore brings a more modern feel to the paddock.

Singapore made its debut on the calendar back in 2008 as F1’s first ever night race. It would become known for the controversial, pre-planned, crash of then Renault driver Nelson Piquet Jr. It was later uncovered that team principal Flavio Briatore has ordered the young Brazilian driver to deliberately crash and induce the deployment of the safety-car to aid teammate Fernando Alonso.

The Spaniard would take a second victory around the streets as a Ferrari driver in 2010. It’s a happy hunting ground for Sebastian Vettel too who has seen the chequered flag first on three occasions.

The Marina Bay circuit is a five-kilometre test of extreme concentration under intense conditions.

Were the race only a handful of laps we’d scoff at the idea that this floodlit circuit could be seriously hard work for drivers.

But with sixty-one laps, each with twentythree corners and oppressive humidity the Singapore Grand Prix demands both physical and mental concentration of the highest order.

There could be more than two Mercedes in the mix as well. The importance of horsepower can be played down somewhat around a street circuit which could open the door for a few contenders.

In Hungary and Monaco Red Bull Racing were well in the mix with both Daniil Kvyat and Daniel Ricciardo.

If their increased competitiveness is a given this weekend then this is the only clarity that the once near unbeatable team appear to have at this moment.

The uncertainty of the team’s future is being fuelled by the fact that its deal with engine supplier Renault runs out at the end of the season.

As it stands, it looks as if the only two choices on the table for the Austrian team are either a year-old Ferrari engine or an abrupt adios to the sport. Renault itself is believed to be close in taking a 65% controlling interest in the Lotus team.

Amid the imminent French takeover the struggling Japanese sits Ferrari who will fancy their chances this weekend.

Whilst team boss Maurizio Arrivabene has been singing the praises of his drivers

the engine department delivered an upgrade for Monza with which Raikkonen was pleasantly surprised.

While Singapore doesn’t demand the same straight line speed as Monza the upgrade would have brought a slight improvement to the driveability and power delivery to the engine which is important around the twisting streets.

Two weeks ago Sebastian Vettel delivered a morale boosting second place at the team’s home race. But a boost in confidence won’t be enough to halt the Lewis Hamilton behemoth. It has to start in qualifying where it’s going to require another exceptional run in qualifying if they are to have any say in Sunday’s proceedings.

A 53-point chasm sits between Hamilton and Nico Rosberg and while the numbers are against the German it is in the mental game where he has taken the biggest beating, even without the Monza failure. If Nico Rosberg has the psychological ability to fight back he must now lay it all on the line.
