Solar tracker first for Bay ODETTE KEMP

A

PORT Elizabeth company has now established itself among the leaders of Africa’s solar energy industry.

PiA Solar, which has been manufacturing

and installing photovoltaic solar panels since 2013, introduced their new sun tracker technology which turn panels automatically to follow the sun’s movement.

While similar technology is already being manufactured in Europe and America, it is the first time that it is created in Africa, Colin Muller, PiA’s co-founder, said.

“The Eastern Cape is a wonderful incuba-

tor for this technology,” said Muller. “People are working harder for less money here, and they do not know the word ‘no’.

“We are growing a market here that can spread to the rest of the world - and we would be proud to reach the world from this province.”

The possibility of the new technology’s success in the export market is also en-

hanced by their ISO 9001 certification, which PiA received from the international organisation BMTRADA last week.

“This is definitely a boost regarding exports. Most international companies in the solar energy industry will not work with suppliers until they have ISO certification.

Inwoners duisende kort oor Lorraine­riool ODETTE KEMP DIE rioolwater wat voortdurend in hul erwe inspoel, het reeds skade van honderdduisende rande vir Lorraine-inwoners beteken – en dit neem skaars meer as ’n ligte reënbui vir die probleem om kop uit te steek.

Só het Martin Brits, inwoner van Lunevilleweg in Lorraine vertel van die buurt se stryd om rioolwater uit hul tuine en huise te hou. “Dit is ’n vreemde gevoel om in die oggend na jou sitkamer te stap en ontlasting op die vloer te vind,” het Brits vertel. “Om skoon te maak sou nie ’n reuse probleem wees nie, maar die riool vloei konstant na ons erwe.”

Brits het gesê hy moes reeds nagenoeg R250 000 bestee om die skade wat dié probleem gelaat het, reg te stel en te keer dat dit weer gebeur. “Ek moes ook slote grawe rondom die tuinwoonstel en die hoofhuis om die rioolwater weg te lei.”

Een van Brits se bure, wat anoniem wou bly, het ook aansienlike skade gemeld. “Ek sukkel al sedert 2012 met die munisipaliteit, want die tuin-

huis en motorhuis is gereeld onderwater,” het sy vertel. “Ons moes al ons versekeringsmaatskappy nader oor die skade.”

Volgens dié inwoner word munisipale werkers gestuur wanneer sy die probleem by die munisipale oproepsentrum aanmeld. “Dit is egter nie genoeg om net vinnig skoon te maak en die verstopte drein leeg te maak nie. Die oomblik wat dit reën, is dit dieselfde probleem van vooraf.”

Gustav Rautenbach, DA-wyksraadslid vir die buurt, het gesê die probleem word onder meer veroorsaak deur verouderde infrastruktuur en rioolpype wat te klein is. “Die woonbuurt het sedert 2004 baie ontwikkel, en daar is nou baie meer inwoners,” het Rautenbach gesê. “Tog is die nuwe meenthuise ingeskakel by die bestaande netwerk van pype, wat eenvoudig nie genoeg is om die toename in inwoners te hanteer nie.

Dit is die grootste kopseer in ons wyk, maar dis ook nie uniek aan Lorraine nie.”

Volgens Rautenbach sal die probleem nie opgelos kan word tot die munisipaliteit in sy begroting voorsien om die pype te vervang nie. “Die nuwe begroting vir die onderhoud van infrastruktuur is met R150-miljoen gesnoei, en ons het nie eers die mannekrag wat dringend kan optree nie. Die enigste manier om dit daadwerklik aan te spreek, is deur die begroting – hoewel dit miljoene rande sal kos.”

Die munisipaliteit kon nie teen druktyd reageer op navrae oor die rioolpype nie.

Rioolwater spoel voortdurend in die tuine van Lorraine-inwoners in, wat reeds tot honderdduisende rande se skade gelei het. Een van die inwoners het dié foto, van ’n rioolvloed in 2012, ingestuur.

AS a Transnet employee, Gert (59), has some unique options available when he retires.

Below is a simple example to illustrate the principles.

Gert has a pension fund worth R3-million.

When he retires he would be able to take 1/3 of that (R1-million) as a lump sum (the other R2-million must be invested to provide a pension). If he were a member of a regular private sector fund, then the first R500 000 of the lump sum would be tax-free and the remaining R500 000 would be taxable. In this instance , he would pay R117 000 tax on the lump sum. However, because Gert is an employee at Transnet with, say, 37 years of service, he could get the full R1-million tax-free.

Before March 1998 lump sums from government retirement funds were totally tax-free.

The portion of the lump sum attributable to Gert’s employment before 1998 will still be totally tax-free, and over and above that the first R500 000 of the portion attributable to his employment after that (17 years since then) will also be tax-free.

In this example 54% or R540 000 of his lump sum is attributable to his employment before 1998 and will be totally tax-free (note that all of the figures in this article are rounded to keep the example simple). The remaining 46% or R460 000 is attributable to his service after that. Since anything up to R500 000 of this portion is also tax-free it means that he will not pay tax on this either.

That is why the full R1-million lump sum in this example is totally tax-free.

TO RESIGN OR TO RETIRE?

However, as a Transnet employee under the age of 60, Gert also has another option. He could resign instead of retiring. If he did this he could get a tax-free lump sum of just over

R1,6-million.

The reason for this is that the pre-1998 taxfree formula would be applied to his full fund credit of R3-million and not just the 1/3 lump sum. That means that 54% of the R3-million is attributable to Gert’s employment before March 1998 and would therefore be tax-free.

That gives him just over R1,6-million.

If he followed this route (as a number of his Transnet colleagues have) he could ultimately end up with around R1,4-million in a pension generating investment like a living annuity and about R1,6-million in discretionary funds.

The benefits of this structure are 1) his income in retirement will be a lot more tax- efficient, and 2) his portfolio will be more liquid.

A NOTE

Whenever there are tax breaks like this available, it makes sense to consider taking advantage of them. For Transnet employees who are considering leaving before age 60 the example above illustrates an option worth considering. However, remember that leaving early means cutting off the last few years of contribution and growth and this might make the difference between being comfortable or not. Therefore, ask a skilled financial planner to do retirement calculations for you before making your final decision.

‘Kanker­kol’ laat polisie sukkel CARA­LEE SCHEUN VREES vir die nadraai van optrede teen bendes is moontlik die rede waarom die polisie in Gelvandale verlede week in twee gevalle onder skoot gekom het.

Die polisie se nuut aangestelde bende-ingrypingseenheid is verlede week, ná maande se pleidooie om hulp uit die gemeenskap, in die Baai se “bende-oorlogsone” ontplooi.

Tog was dit dieselfde inwoners wat die polisie met bottels en klippe bestook het toe die polisie teen vermeende bendelede wou optree.

Justin Oliphant, ’n kenner van die Baai se bendes, het gister beweer ’n deel van die inwoners werk saam met die bendes om hul eie veiligheid te verseker.

“Uit vrees vir die nagevolge sal sekere inwoners eerder die bendes verdedig aangesien hulle ná ’n hofsaak teen bendelede aan hul genade oorgelaat is,” het Oliphant gesê.

Ao. Alwin Labans, polisiewoordvoerder, het hierop gesê getuies word die keuse van ’n beskermingsprogram aangebied. Maar aangesien die program ’n totale nuwe lewe weg van hul bestaan behels, is getuies soms huiwerig om dit te aanvaar.

Oliphant het verder gesê ’n holistiese plan

wat onderrig, korrektiewe dienste en ander wetstoepassers insluit, is nodig om bendemisdaad te bestry.

Hy het bygevoeg dat die samewerking tussen die inwoners en bendelede slegs ’n deel van die gemeenskap betrek. “Daar is ongelukkig die kanker-kol wat die polisie se werk bemoeilik.

En ek verstaan tot ’n mate die vrees en morele stryd wat deur dié ‘kol’ ervaar word, maar ongelukkig sal die bendes dán bly voortbestaan.”

Nico du Plessis, DA-raadslid in die gebied, het Oliphant se siening gesteun deur te sê bendegeweld sal slegs tot ’n einde kom wanneer die polisie en lede van die gemeenskap ten volle kan saamwerk.

“Terwyl ons praat, is daar gemeenskapsleiers wat by die polisie kom hoor hoe hulle die gemeenskap kan lei om die polisie by te staan,” het Du Plessis gesê.

Volgens hom is dit ook belangrik vir die polisie in die gebied om nie net by bendeverwante voorvalle gesien te word nie, maar ook by ander

nie-bendeverwante sake in die gemeenskap. “ ’n Polisiemag wat die gemeenskap op alle vlakke dien, sal nie die gemeenskap se hulp hoef te vra nie, want die gemeenskap sal hul samewerking wil gee.”

Brig. Marinda Mills, provinsiale polisiewoordvoerder, het ook ’n beroep op gemeenskapsleiers gedoen om saam te staan en die polisie teen hul gemeenskap te beskerm.

“Ons is diep teleurgesteld oor die gedrag van sekere lede van die publiek. Die impak wat bendes op ons gemeenskappe het, is geweldig negatief en almal behoort saam te staan.”

Mills het ook gewaarsku dat die polisie nie sal huiwer om op te tree teen mense wat die polisie aanval nie.

Nursing student sets out to make a difference CHARDÉ MEYER LEAD globally, transform regionally, serve locally. This is the theme of the biennial Sigma Theta Tau International (STTI) convention and recognised for implementing these three missions, is NMMU student, Euan Martins (20).

For this budding nurse, dedication to his studies and will to help others, have earned him international recognition. Martins is one of two South African students to be invited to the STTI convention, that will take place from 7-11 November, in Las Vegas, Nevada.

“I feel extremely humbled by this opportunity, because someone as young as myself will be able to learn from some of the biggest names in the nursing field,” said Martins, excitedly.

“I look forward to the convention, because I will be able to bring back the knowledge I obtain and make a difference locally.”

For Martins, the knowledge that he will bring home will aid him in his duties of leading the new generation of nurses. As the chairper-

son of NMMU’s nursing society, he feels that his first trip abroad will be beneficial to him and those around him.

“I have always wanted to inspire others,” he said, as he begins to think about his own personal inspirations. “For me, studying towards a qualification in medicine only came about when I was in my late teens.”

As a schoolboy at Muir College in Uitenhage, Martins had dreams of following his passion for fitness and athletics. However, due to an injury after a 200m run, Martins had to reassess his plans for the future. “I broke a tendon in my right knee and as a result, I had to undergo an operation.”

It was then, at the age of 17, whilst lying in his hospital bed, that Martins started considering a career in medicine. “I was so scared that I might never be able to use my leg again and because of my doctor, I was given back that chance. He gave me something that I was afraid of losing,” said Martins.

It was then that Martins decided that he too wanted to make a notable difference in the lives of others.

Thus far, Martins believes that he has done just that – even if it is on a small scale. “My most memorable moment has to be going to the Malabar Old Age Home and spending time with the senior citizens,” said Martins. “They told us stories and reminisced about the ‘good old days’.”

The experience of making a difference to the general well being of others was the affirmation Martins needed that his chosen path was the right one. In fact, Martins had felt so inspired to make a difference to those he works with, that he started the NMMU nursing choir.

“I have always had a love for music. I play the guitar and the piano and singing has always provided me with an outlet to express myself,” he said. Combining his talents of caring for ailments with medicine - and song, has made studying all that more exciting for this young man, who despite his age, has big plans.

“I want to inspire others, because I have been blessed beyond recognition and if I can bless someone in any way I can, I will have achieved my goal.”

Grade 3 pupils reach out to community Tara Weise is a Grade 3 pupil at St Dominic’s Priory and believes strongly in giving back to her community. She will be hosting a Denim and Diamonds High Tea on Saturday, October 24, in an effort to raise much-needed funds for St Francis Hospice. Tara’s idea of assisting with a fundraiser arose when her mom was busy with a similar attempt at work. She realised that she could also do something to help others in need. She roped in her mother, Tracy, and grandmother, Judy de Villiers, to help her with the project and for the last few weeks the trio have been busy with fundraising, ticket sales and preparation for the actual event. The fundraiser will be hosted at The Topdeck in Lakeside Road, Kragga Kamma. Guests will be treated to a guest speaker, lucky draw prizes and delicious snacks. The certification will open many doors for the company, said Dr Mark Bodley of BMTRADA. “It sends an instant message to their customers that the company is reliable and succeeds by constantly improving its services,” Bodley said.

The certification process entails a wide evaluation of the company.

“We look more to their customers’ satisfaction, the improvements in their technology and the standard of their products regarding quality.”

PiA has already proven its capabilities with a 90MW project in De Aar and an 86MW solar energy farm in Prieska, but with the certification it will be able to grow even further, said Muller.

“We will soon reach the one million mark of solar panels we installed. We want our product to be on every roof in South Africa - and with this innovative technology that goal is within our reach,” he added.

ACVV keeps the elderly young CHANDRÉ MASOLING PEOPLE don’t grow old because of playing, they get old when they stop playing.

These are the words of Retha van der Merwe, the manager of the ACVV’s two branches in Algoa Park and Govan Mbeki Avenue.

Nationally the month of October is the month of the elderly of our country. Therefore the ACVV together with the Department of Social Development has a whole programme lined up for the senior citizens of the ACVV’s retirement villages in the metro.

First on the programme was the ACVV’s got talent competition which was attended by 85 elderly people at the Louis Dubb retirement village, and the participation also made a great turn out.

One of the acts at the competition which stood out was that of Dina Stamp, an 83year-old, who has been residing in Iris Park for the past 9 years.

The newspaper paid Stamps a visit at the ACVV Algoa Park retirement village, where she performed Kurt Darren’s popular song “Loslappie”. She enjoyed every moment as she sang and freely moved across the centre’s wooden floor.

Where does she still get the energy and willpower to still keep fit at 83, is the question many ask?

“I am involved with a lot of activities and I don’t believe in sitting at home waiting to age; I believe that one needs to stay active in one’s environment,” said Stamps.

She is a non-smoker and invests a lot in a healthy lifestyle, spiritual development, a balanced diet and physical exercise.

She said, “Every Tuesday and Thursday Dina Stamps (83) whilst performing on Kurt Darren's famous “Loslappie”, the same way she did at the ACVV talent competition last week.

Diwali or Deepavali is the annual Festival of Lights, and is celebrated by Hindus all over the world and is a time for giving and sharing. This year the actual festival which symbolises the victory of Light over Darkness, Good over Evil will be celebrated on November 11.

To mark the occasion the local organising committee has been organising a community-based cultural festival for the past seven years. Funds raised from the festival have been donated to the Malabar Primary School, Woolhope Secondary School, Centre for Abused Women and Children, Sasko Wheel Chair Project, Iskcon-Food for Life, Inn Safe Hands Home for Abandoned Children, a cancer patient, and residents in Ward 12, bordering Malabar and Gelvandale, whose homes

were destroyed by fire.

This year the committee has pledged to donate R20 000 to the Food for Life project which feeds thousands each week from its premises in Alexander Road, Newton Park.

The food is currently prepared in an old garage which badly needs refurbishment. The cultural festival will also provide an opportunity for the public to make pledges towards this project.

Iskcon has also undertaken to feed needy students at NMMU every Tuesday.

The theme for this year’s festival is Food for Light, Food for Life.

The festivities will begin with a procession which will start at the Malabar Community Centre at 10am and proceed through the streets, stopping over at the temples, namely the Seva Samaj Mandir, the Sathi Sanmarka Sangum and the SS Aulayam before returning to the community centre.

Various stalls selling food, clothing, sweetmeats, tea, coffee, etc. will be set up on the lawns of the community centre,creating a carnival atmosphere in marquees. Kids will be treated to a jumping castle and face-painting.

Linkside learner ends school career with 100% attendance CHARDÉ MEYER WHEN Linkside High School matric pupil, Heine Vorster, thinks back at his school years, he will have much more to think about than any other learner. That’s because in his 12 years of school, Heine has never missed a day.

At his final prize giving, which took place last Wednesday, Heine thought he was having a case of déjávu when his primary school teacher walked on stage.

The teacher in question was Buks Groenewald from Heine’s previous school, Kabega Park Primary. In

grade 7, he received a prize for 100% attendance and Groenewald was the one to hand it over.

“It was quite a surprise seeing him there,” said Heine. Not only did Groenewald hand over Heine’s prize, but he also made good on a five-yearold promise: If Heine were to get 100% attendance at high school he would get R500.

“I never thought he would actually do it, but it was really special to have him there,” Heine said.

To Groenewald, no monetary value can be added to Heine’s 12-year achievement. “When I made that promise, I knew that he would achieve it, because he has strong vig-

our,” said Groenewald.

According to Heine, the “vigour” he displayed, wasn’t constant, because there were days when the urge to go school wasn’t as strong.

“Going to school everyday can become monotonous and so I have thought of staying at home, but my mother always said: ‘If you’re too sick to go to school, you’re too sick to play Xbox’.”

So it is with thanks to his mother’s emphatic rules that Heine was able to achieve 100% attendance.

His mother’s rearing has also seen his brothers, Nicki and Ruen, achieve 100% attendance at Linkside High.

Sunridge Village treats Cassians for 30th anniversary BETTIE GILIOMEE SUNRIDGE Village Shopping Centre recently treated residents of Cassia Gardens to lunch at The Buzz Factory to celebrate the retirement village’s 30th anniversary.

According to Suzanne Fincham of Centre Management, the Cassians, as the residents call themselves, have a special relationship with the shop owners at Sunridge

Village and it was therefore quite apt that they should be treated by the Centre on this special occasion.

Cassia Gardens was developed by Methodist Homes for the Aged in Cassia Drive, Sunridge Park.

The first 31 two-bedroom cottages of the village, each costing R46 000, and 13 onebedroom cottages, costing R34 000, were taken occupation of on March 31, 1985. The Village was officially opened on Saturday,

August 3, 1985.

According to one of the first residents, there were no roads, no outside lighting, no phones, no lawns and lots of crickets, scorpions and bullfrogs at the time.

In September 1997 additional land, adjacent to Cassia Gardens, was bought and phase two started in January 1998 with the construction of 17 new cottages, at a cost of R184 000 for a 97-square metre cottage and R210 000 for a 106 square metre cottage.

In 2004 Phase 3, comprising two more cottages, was built.

In the 19 years since phase 1 the cost of similar-sized units escalated from R46 000 to R210 000 in phase two, to R401 500 in Phase 3.

In recent years another six cottage complexes have been developed or acquired, as well as two frail care facilities, two bedsitter apartment blocks and a head office building.

McWilliams Academy of Dance excels at championships The McWilliams Academy of Dance (MAD) attended the South African Championships held in Kyalami this month and many of the academy’s dancers won their sections. M.A.D also had eight dancers who qualified for the 2016 World Championships to be held in Glasgow, Scotland. These 8 qualifiers are, from left, Lisa Ward (15), Mia Jansen van Rensburg (13), Courtney Pearce (23), Jenna Hayes (14), teacher Jenny McWilliams, Carma Stephenson (14), Thameena Hamza (16) and consultant Aaron Crosbie. This is considered a fantastic achievement, considering that MAD is the only Irish Dancing school in the Bay, and also one of the smallest studios in South Africa, yet they had the most number of qualifiers. The Academy will be hosting a dance evening to raise funds either in November or December and are looking for donations for prizes and also something special to auction. THE German Club in Port Elizabeth is proud to announce that they were recently nominated by National Geographic for hosting the 10th most popular Oktoberfest outside Germany.

The Oktoberfest, which will be taking place this weekend, will this year again have two special Oktoberfest craft beers on tap brewed specially for the Oktoberfest by South African Breweries’ new Craft Beer plant in Cape Town.

They have also partnered with Blunden Transport who are doing three different routes in Port Elizabeth to and from the Oktoberfest in Lorraine as part of their Drink and Don’t Drive campaign. The second semi-final of the Rugby World Cup starts at 6pm and will be broadcast with the build-up from 5pm on big screens in the tent.

Celtic FC makes a comeback after 28 years CHANDRÉ MASOLING AFTER 28 years of commitment, hard work and determination, the first team of Celtic Football club, situated among the Northern areas of the metro, got promotion and will now play for a higher league.

The club which was established in 1987 has been playing in the Northern Area Football Association for decades and consists only of players residing in the northern areas if the Bay. “On Saturday, October 10, our first team played against Windvogel United and beat them to a score of 3-0,” said Warren Blaauw, spokesperson and reserve team player of the club.

This win was a huge stepping stone for the team as it pushed them into a higher and more advanced soccer league after 28 years of play-

ing for the NAFA - The Premier League.

This league is the highest league in the NAFA, and can mean more than just promotion for the winners.

“In this league our players can get more exposure in the sense that more coaches from higher soccer associations can scout them, and even take them to play for a higher league,” said Blaauw.

The first team, however, is not the only Celtic Football club team making history. The reserve team pushed through to the finals of the Shield league, which also forms part of the NAFA league, and will face their opponents on November 1.

The Algoa Cup is one of Port Elizabeth’s most popular meetings. It attracts big crowds not only due to the racing, but also due to the vast range of entertainment and fine fare provided, both of which cater for the needs of all age groups. There are also lucky draws throughout the day.

The Algoa Cup itself has gained in prestige since being won by the subsequent J&B Met winner Hill Fifty-Four three years ago.

The day will have a unique start this year in that a charity walk/run in aid of polio awareness will be held at 7:30am in the morning, to which all are welcome (food vendors will be opening from 6:30am).

Be sure not to miss this racing carnival, which has become known as one of PE’s most festive family days out.

Chev gives its Cruze models a makeover WHEN first introduced in the local market, Chev sold its Cruze as a car offering high specs and big car comfort features at a much more affordable price than its European competitors.

And it looked the part too.

This year they have updated the hatchback and sedan range with the addition of a new six-speed automatic gearbox option for the 1.4 turbopetrol sedan version. And with this 2015 upgrade, the LS versions have gained a Mylink infotainment system with a colour touch-screen.

This week’s test model was the 1.4 T hatch model with 6-speed manual transmission.

Exterior The 2015 update of the Cruze includes some cosmetic surgery on the exterior too, with a smoother rear for the sedan version and sharper front with new dual port grille and bumper.

The rear fascia enhancement of the sedan model includes a new deck lid and tail lamp design.

Adding to the appearance as well as safety are projection fog lamps and LED daytime running lights. The hatch sports a sweeping coupe roofline which the people at GM say has been aerodynamically designed for optimum fuel efficiency.

Interior One thing that certainly stands out about the Cruze’s interior is the generous cabin space, not to mention boot space. This boot is huge and I like the height of the loadbed which makes for easy packing and unpacking of the car.

In addition, the 60:40 foldable seats can be folded forward for even more space. Leather seats and a sunroof are available as an option.

I found the interior design to be very tasteful and practical featuring adjustable cupholders and a dashboard with curvy lines and metallic trim. The layout of the dashboard is uncluttered and easy on the eye.

Most impressive and noticeable is the colour touchscreen in the middle of the dashboard as part of Chevrolet’s MyLink infotainment system. It’s compatible with most smartphones and allows one to stream music via Bluetooth. The USB port enables one to access one’s playlists and music. The steering-wheel also houses controls for the audio system.

Ride The vehicle test driven was the 1.4T LS Hatch version with 6-speed manual tranmission. The turbocharged 1.4 ECOTEC petrol engine generates 200Nm of torque and power of 103 kW between 4 900 and 6 000rpm. Combined fuel consumption is stated as 6.8l/100km for the sedan version, with corresponding CO² emissions of 157 g/ km.

The 1.4 turbo models mated to the manual transmission are fitted with stop/start technology for additional fuel economy and lower emissions.. Its fuel efficiency is stated as 5.8L/100km in a combined cycle.

I found the Cruze to be quick off the mark, eager to go and offering an energetic, yet smooth and comfortable ride despite this big-sized car being powered

by a relatively small engine.

I also liked the feel and shape of the big, bulky gearknob. It handles the mom’s taxi route with all its traffic circles, potholes, speedbumps and stopstart moving with panache, while not afraid to let its hair down on the open road.

Cruze control is also a standard feature.

Safety The Cruze offers a comprehensive package of safety features as standard.

These include front passenger, seat side and curtain airbags, as well as Anti-Lock Braking System (ABS), which prevents wheels from locking during sudden or forceful braking, the Electronic Brake-Force Distribution (EBD) system, which calculates and applies the right amount of braking pressure to each wheel to maximize stopping power and maintain control when braking and the Traction Control System (TCS) which works to regain control when traction on the road surface is lost.

The Electronic Stability Program (ESP) prevents it from skidding out of control by applying brake pressure to the wheels that need it and by limiting engine power.

Busy swim season ahead THE Adventure Province once again shows its supremacy with its choice of competitive events available for open water swimming (OWS) as the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics’ (NMBA) sanctioned EC Swim Series gets under way on Sunday, November 1, at Settlers Dam just outside Grahamstown.

The EC Swim Series will become the only sanctioned OWS event in the region offering registered swimmers the opportunity to obtain Swimming South Africa (SSA) qualifying times.

The EC Swim Series will consist of 5 race days including the 2 NMBA Championship events and whilst primarily focused on SSA registered swimmers, the Olympic 10km distance and the SSA OWS 5km and 3km distances, the Series will also be open to all open water swim enthusiasts offering a fantastic

training base for triathletes and water polo players in the Eastern Cape.

NMBA have announced that swimmers wanting to qualify for team selection and/or attend the SA OWS national championships, will be required to achieve at the SSA qualifying time in their selected distance on at least two separate occasions. Each of the EC Series race days will offer a 10km, 5km, 3km or 1km swim with the 5km and 10km distances swum at the same time.

The EC Swim Series, hosted by Zsports Events NPC, takes place on November 1 and November 15 in 2015 and again in January 2016 ahead of the NMBA OWS Championships being held on the first two weekends of February 2016. aQuellé ORS this Sunday Round 2 of the popular aQuellé Ocean Racing Series™ returns to Hobie Beach this Sunday morning from 9am.

Outdoor family fun at its best, the Series is open to all ages and offers the choice of 6 events each race day which are: 5km Beach Run, 5km Beach Walk, Kids 12u Kids 1km Beach Run, 1km, 2km and 3km Ocean Swims.

Thousands expected for Big Walk for Cancer NCEBA DLADLA ABOUT 10 000 people are expected to take part in the Algoa FM 5km Big Walk for Cancer on Saturday, October 31.

The annual event, organised by Algoa FM in partnership with the provincial Department of Health, is held to support the fight against cancer and promote healthy living among the people of the Eastern Cape.

The organisers said about 10 000 people from all walks of life were expected to take part - an increase over the 9 000

who did last year.

“We expect Miss World, Rolene Strauss, Idols judge and musician Unathi Msengana, Health MEC Phumza Dyantyi like last year, Premier Phumullo Masualle and mayor Danny Jordaan,” spokesperson Jennilee Peremore said.

Those taking part would be supporting beneficiary the Igazi Foundation, a non-governmental organisation specialising in the treatment of blood diseases, including blood cancer, she said.

As part of the outreach, the Algoa FM team and an information kiosk, had visited the KwaNobuhle Mall, the Ke-

nako Mall and the Cleary Park Mall in Nelson Mandela Bay last week, Peremore said. They had been joined by Health Department nurses who conducted tests for cervical cancer, immunisations and breast examinations for early signs of cancer.

More tests would be done by full teams during registration for the walk on October 29 and 30 from 1pm to 7pm at the Boardwalk. These would be offered free, and results are strictly confidential.

What a weekend for Boks and Proteas NOW that was more like it – South African sports achievements that resonated loud and clear at compass points far from home in the Far North and the Far South-East.

That last weekend was the true measure of SA rugby and cricket in a weekend of triumph for the Springboks at Twickenham, London and the Proteas in Rajkot, India.

Each had their heroes, of course. None bigger though than new Springbok captain, Fourie du Preez, his efforts nicely captured in a fivecolumn picture in one of the national weekend papers as he roared with delight at having scored the match-winning try just six minutes from full time to take the Boks to the Rugby World Cup semi-finals.

The try made all the difference.

In a see-sawing match in which the Boks were 12-13 behind at the break, it was wonderfully fitting that it should be Du Preez who slipped around the blindside of a tense passage to dot down.

Handré Pollard, who otherwise was melodiously on song with five penalties and a drop-goal, missed the conversion of this his

team’s only try. But it didn’t matter. The hard work had been done.

Ironically, Wales’ Dan Biggar succeeded with three penalties, a conversion (of scrumhalf Gareth Davies’ try) and a drop-goal for Wales – and made no secret of his disgust at being replaced with some ten minutes of play remaining. Would it have made a difference had he not been replaced? Who knows?

It wasn’t a great game with the Boks making unnecessary errors at critical moments.

Nonetheless it was overall a sterling team effort, with some great work by the loose trio, Schalk Burger in particular. Rather it was the sort of game in which both sides gave all they had, never giving up for a moment.

Interestingly the Boks made somewhere in the region of 150 tackles, compared with their opponents’ 45 or 50. This tells a story of its own: for much of the game Wales enjoyed the majority of possession. One of the reasons for this was the Springboks’ inability to make the best use of possession. Time and again they would lose the ball in contact situations.

Much to coach Heyneke Meyer’s consterna-

tion these breakdowns would furnish new ammunition for the Welsh to set up nervewracking opportunities for attacks of their own.

However, that these surges towards the Boks tryline were contained said much for the steadfast refusal of the South African defence to give way. If this game showed one thing it was just how valuable the young second row of Eben Etzebeth and Lood de Jager are going to be to South African rugby in the years ahead. Not only are they lineout specialists of high order but also great foragers in the loose and collisions aimed retaining or stealing possession against the run of play.

And in Rajkot, largely through the efforts of young Quinton de Kock, with an almost faultless century, the Proteas rang up a brave victory in the third ODI against India.

The win, by 18 runs (Proteas 270/7, India 252/6) gave the South Africans a 2-1 lead in the current ODI series. Man of the Match was Morne Morkel with a haul of 4/31, while best of the India team were captain Dhoni with 61 and Kohli 77.

Then enter the 2015 White Cane Run - an event which includes a 10km League race; a 5km fun run/walk and a White Cane Challenge for the Blind/Visually impaired. All three events will take place at The Boardwalk on October 24, starting from 7am.

SpecSavers, as the headline sponsor, has once again joined hands with PE Eye and Laser Institute to host the 4th Annual White Cane Run. This Run has gone from strength to strength and has now been included in the EPA Official Race League calendar under the auspices of the Walmer Athletics Club. All funds raised will be donated to Nkosinathi Foundation for the visually impaired.

We would like to encourage the Port Elizabeth community to enter and support this wonderful cause aimed at increasing awareness around the meaning of the “white cane” to both visually impaired individuals as well as the general public.

Participants will be given the opportunity to enter as a “Buddy for the Blind”, a life changing experience that allows a sighted person to lead a blind/visually impaired person through the 5km route. The special White Cane Challenge will allow blind/visually impaired participants to do a shorter route independently by using

only a white cane or guide dog.

Runners and walkers can enter the event at selected SpecSavers branches, Brian Bands, Action Sports, The Footballer, Brocketts Sports, or Sportsmans Warehouse. Blind or visually impaired participants should enter at Nkosinathi Foundation – 58 (B) Kirkwood Street, North End, telephone number 041 487 1150.

Late entries will still be accepted on the afternoon of October 23 at the MFT Day Hospital at 209 Cape Road, Mill Park from 4pm-7pm and on the morning of the run from 6am-7am. T-shirts will be available to the first 1000 participants.

Runners as well as supporters will also be given the chance to experience Specsavers’ very own Oculus Rift technology at their display on the day.
