HE PE EXPRESS is once again looking for a baby to grace the front page of the last edition of the year – the Christmas edition on Wednesday, December 16.

The annual PE Express Christmas Baby Competition is aimed at making the day even more special for babies who are celebrating their first Christmas.

Apart from the honour of gracing our last front page of the year, the winning baby will also receive a photo shoot and images on a disk to the value of R1 200 from Pro Design Photographers.

This year, parents must enter their babies via our social media platforms. There are three platforms to choose from:

German partnership to bring ‘fascinating projects’ THE international partnership that has helped to establish the Eastern Cape as a renewable energy hub will still deliver years of “fascinating projects and learning”.

This according to Stefan Wenzel, the deputy prime minister of the Lower Saxony region in Germany, who visited Nelson Mandela Bay last week with a delegation of over 50 representatives. He was speaking during a visit to the provincial legislature’s meetings with the public in the Bay. Lower Saxony has been a twin to the Eastern Cape since signing an agreement in 1995. According to this agreement, the two regions will share knowledge and support for several projects, spanning education, sport and renewable energy.

“Renewable energy is very close to my heart,” said Wenzel. “All around the world, we are affected by climate change, and this won’t be resolved by just one country. We need to partner

up and work together.”

Lower Saxony’s support has been a large part of the province’s capacity to generate renewable energy, added Noxolo Kiviet, speaker of the legislature. “When we started exploring this field, Germany was already a step ahead and had a lot of knowledge to impart,” she said. “We have also participated in exchange programmes for sport teams, but the Eastern Cape is definitely benefiting the most from this partnership.”

Yet there are many lessons to be learned from the Eastern Cape, said Wenzel. “Our regions have a lot in common, and both our countries started building their democracy in the late 20th century. In Europe, we are now surrounded by countries in conflict and we will have a million refugees in Germany. At this time, the Eastern Cape and Nelson Mandela serve as great inspirations. The country has proved that deeply rooted injustices can still be overcome peacefully.” – ODETTE KEMP

NSRI gets new base in Bay ANNA PAUW AFTER having operated from shipping containers for more than two years, the Bay’s sea rescue team and its equipment now have a safe haven.

The Port Elizabeth chapter of the National Sea Rescue Institute (NSRI, station 6), officially opened its revamped facility in the Port Elizabeth Harbour on Saturday. For the first time, the institute’s expensive boats and equipment will now also be sheltered from the elements.

Ian Gray, station commander of the NSRI in PE, said renovations have been ongoing for quite some time and that the completion of the work was made possible by a generous donation by the Rabie family of PE. “As a token of our gratitude, the base will be known as the Archie and Alta Rabie Sea Rescue Base.”

Gray said they have just over 40 volunteers doing duty at the NSRI in PE. “Although volunteers don’t have to have specific qualifications, they need to be extremely dedicated.

“Among others, we regularly work with the Tactical Task Force, various ambulance services and the South African Air Force.”

Tom Swartz, head of the Tactical Task Force, said the help his team receives from the NSRI is of great value.

“Ian says we help the NSRI, but they help us too. There is great synergy between our organisations.”

Gray said they had responded to 70 call-outs last year. “Since we have no coast guard, the NSRI usually gets the first call when someone

needs sea rescue assistance.”

Apart from teaming up with local emergency services, Station 6 also frequently work in conjunction with other NSRI stations. “We give and get support from our neighbouring bases, like Port Alfred, Cape St Francis and Jeffreys Bay.” He said although some bases around the country have full time permanent staff members, everyone at Station 6 is a volunteer.

“The volunteers all have different personalities and each bring a unique and valuable skill set to the base. We truly are like one big family,” said one of the volunteers, Sheryll Grobler.

Gibson, wat onlangs vir sy 30 jaar as onderwyser by Alexander Road-hoërskool in Port Elizabeth vereer is, was een van die Baaise pioniers wat rekenaar-onderrig vir skole betref. “Ek was aanvanklik ’n wiskunde-onnie, maar in 1987 het ons rekenaarklasse as sewende vak begin aanbied,” het Gibson vertel. “In dié stadium het net ons en Grey-hoërskool die klasse gehad, en dit was oop vir leerders van ander skole ook.”

Vir die lesse moes leerders die nuwe tegnologie – ’n rekenaar wat met ’n slapskyf (“floppy disk”) eerder as harde-skyf gewerk het – vir die eerste keer verken. “Vandag kan ek nie glo hoe ons met dié rekenaars kon werk nie. Ek moes ingewikkelde kodes leer – wat ek op my sterfbed steeds sal onthou – net om woorde te kan onderstreep.

Dan kon jy ook nie sien of die streep wel daar is nie. Jy moes maar die dokument druk en as die kode reg was, sou jou sinne onderstreep wees.”

Toe die skool sy eerste rekenaar met ’n hardeskyf kry, is dit met groot verwondering

verwelkom. “Die hardeskyf was 10 MG groot, maar ons het gewonder hoe ons ooit só baie spasie kan opgebruik!”

Die vordering in rekenaar-tegnologie oor die jare was ongelooflik, maar tog praat Gibson met ’n tikkie nostalgie oor die begin-dae. “Ek dink ons het ’n bietjie van die magic verloor. Toe die skool uiteindelik internet gekry het, was ons tevrede met skakeltoegang (“dial-up”), selfs al moes ons 15 minute wag om ’n webtuiste te gebruik.

“Aan die ander kant besef ons nie hoeveel meer produktief ons vandag is danksy gevorderde tegnologie nie. As ons só baie kan vorder in die afgelope 30 jaar, kan die volgende 30 jaar se innovering slegs deur ons verbeeldings beperk word.”

Hy moes ook soos die tegnologie oor die jare aanpas, het Gibson vertel. “Die rol van onderwyser het baie verander sedert ek in 1985 begin klasgee het. Destyds was onderwysers op ’n troon geplaas en hulle moes dissipline streng toepas. Nou speel ons ’n dinamiese rol – soms moet ons onderwyser, ouer, raadgewer en tugmeester wees.”

Tog het dié verandering hom toegelaat om meer vir sy leerders te beteken. “Dit is fantasties om te sien hoe hulle groei, en ek probeer om kontak met hulle te behou na skool en ondersteuning te bied. ‘My wife’s battle with cancer taught me a lesson’ ALVENÉ APPOLLIS ON the couch in their home in Westering - right next to the picture of his and his wife’s graduation - Nceba Dladla (48) takes a seat. His wife, Kennethia (47), is talking about her battle with breast cancer, and he is listening with his eyes closed.

“I was diagnosed exactly a year ago - in October,” she said.

“The chemotherapy was the worst for me - besides the fact that I had to rely Nceba and Kennethia Dladla talk about her battle with breast cancer.

heavily on the support of my husband and children to take over my duties as housewife.”

Kennethia had her own catering business. When her battle with cancer began Kennethia had to give up her work.

Nceba, a newspaper reporter and a priest of the African Catholic Church in Motherwell, soon learnt how to be a father, mother and the only breadwinner, as well as an expert on cancer for his family.

With their youngest two children, Azi (19) and Zipho (15), still in the hou-

se, he had to attend some parent meetings alone and iron school uniforms.

“My wife’s struggle taught me a great lesson: There is not a rule in life saying certain duties belonged to a man and the rest to a woman,” he said. “When she called me aside after work that day in October to tell me she had breast cancer, my world came to a halt for a moment. Thoughts of death; how I was going to raise our children alone and how I would ever survive without her, washed over me.

“But I quickly realized that her illness was simply the biggest life lesson the Dladlas would ever learn.”

Kennethia lost her left breast, but to her husband she remains the beautiful woman whom he met 25 years ago.

“Do not for one moment think that the past year has not taken its toll in our marriage. She felt ugly and useless at times, even wondered if I was attracted to her. Little did she know that love is about more than just the body.

“Our bodies are in any case only loaned to us.”

In July she underwent the last radiology and is currently receiving hormone treatment. “Her Xhosa name is Nosithembele, meaning ‘someone you can trust’,” said Nceba.

“She is strong, and we can definitely trust her. Some days she was so devastated by her illness, but she dragged herself out of bed, trying just to be able to mean something to us. Other times she was so incomprehensible, as women sometimes are, but worse. But at that time I really got to know my wife as a fully-fledged woman.

“Women are vulnerable, but the strongest beings in God’s creation.”

MTR children treated to Family Day ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL “WE wanted to give them a sense of family.”

These were the words of Allison Rossouw and Monique Grootboom, two Social Work Honours students from NMMU, who made it their project to create a day with a special sense of family for the children of MTR Smit Children’s Haven.

The family day was held on October 17 and the children, who live in six different houses on the premises, competed against each other. Each house was given a different colour for their team.

“We did a needs assessment and discovered that many of the children do not have a sense of belonging. Some of them are also bored on weekends, and in need of something

exciting to do,” Rossouw said.

The family day consisted of different games of “boeresport” in which all the children, according to junior or senior level, competed for various prizes.

“The feedback we received from the housemothers was great. We were told that since the event, the children in each house were closer, and the day really helped them to become a unit. They were a family before, but now they are even closer,” Grootboom said.

MTR Smit Children’s Haven Director, Dr Crystal Watson, said she was extremely proud of Rossouw and Grootboom and what they have accomplished with their project.

“I am so proud of them. They have done an amazing job and the children still can’t stop talking about the event. They really have made a very good impression,” Watson said.

PE woman in Top 10 of app building competition CHANDRÉ MASOLING TANA Kruger, a speech therapist from the Bay, has assured her spot in the Top 10 of the Helping Hand organisation's app building competition.

As part of Helping Hand’s Schools support centre the organisation decided to teach both young and old how to build an app.

“It’s the first project of its sort in Afrikaans and we have a variety of

apps which can be built,” said Anette Taljaard, project organiser at Helping Hand.

To launch the programme, the organisation had a competition which allows old app builders the opportunity to build apps which were judged and an amount of R100 000 was on the line.

After approximately 400 entries and several elimination rounds, Tana is one of the 10 app builders who pushed through to the Top 10 of the competition.

The name of the app Tana built is “Tana Kruger Speech therapy”.

According to Kruger, she uses the app in her practice to help her patients. “I am very passionate about speech therapy in Afrikaans, and I really would like to share it with other people.”

When she learned that she had made it through to the Top 10, Tana was astonished. “I was very surprised when I heard the news, as I was just trying out something new and I wanted to use the app for my

practice.”

The top 10 app builders are people from all around South Africa and the winner of the competition will be announced tomorrow.

Tana Kruger, who built the app titled 'Tana Kruger Speech therapy', for Helping Hand’s app building competition, will also use this app as a tool to help her clients with their therapy.

Fundraiser for newborn babies to be held REPORTER THE organisation, “Giving gifts to newborn babies in need” is a group of women who collect items for newborn babies and visit maternity wards to hand out hampers to those in need.

The group is having a fundraiser in the form of a Song and Dance Extravaganza which will be held on Saturday, October 31, at Old Grey at 1pm.

The maternity units they visit include Motherwell, Central (old Stanford), KwaZakhele, Provincial Hospital Uitenhage, and a unit in KwaNobuhle near Uitenhage.

“We hand out approximately 250 of these hampers per month. In the past 10 months we have handed out over 2 000 hampers to desperately destitute moms,” said Desiré Goodwin, administrator and organiser.

“We are proud to supply all the premature babies in Uitenhage with these hampers which include tiny knitted clothes, which can’t be bought at local shops,” she said.

“We also encourage the moms to learn how to knit in the time their prem babies are in hospital, which can be anything up to 3 months.

“We love what we do and want to continue spreading the love we have for these babies and their moms who desperately need us, and that is why we are requesting assistance from the public,” said Desiré.

The BCom: Logistics and Transport Economics programme prepares the student for the demands and challenges of real-world logistics. It offers a comprehensive curriculum with a wide subject range as the sphere of logistics involves a multitude of different factors, such as supply-chain management, procurement, transportation economics and systems, as well as inbound and outbound logistics.

This will assist students to apply and integrate logistics management skills which are essential for the achievement of optimal supply chain performance.

His new hobby is sitting in front of his computer screen and watching the market, and his portfolio, in real-time.

George has a share (equity) based portfolio and the probability that he will make money over any one year period is 93% -- that is a high probability. In other words, if he looks at a statement once a year for the next 20 years he should feel the pain of loss only once or twice.

His probability of making money in any one quarter over the next 20 years is 77%. So if he looks at his portfolio quarterly he may feel the

pain of loss about once a year.

His probability of making money in any one month is 67%. Looking at the portfolio monthly he is likely to feel the pain of loss four times per year. And on any given day the probability of a positive return is only 54%, which means that he is likely to feel the pain of loss over 150 times per year.

If George was glued to his computer screen every second of the day the probability of making money in any given second is only about 50,02%.

Is it possible for George to remain emotionally detached from the events unfolding on his screen in real-time? He feels every agonising second. And since the emotional pain of each loss is larger than the emotional pleasure of each gain he is likely to make decisions that he would never make if he was monitoring his portfolio once a year instead of every waking moment.

Over one year George would see roughly 0.7 parts of noise for every one part of performance. Over one month he would see roughly 2.32 points noise for every part of performance.

Over one hour, 30 parts noise for every part performance, and over one second 1796 parts noise for every one part of performance.

Research shows that investors who watch their portfolios in real time usually do worse than those who check annually.

ST Thomas High School is now the home of a brand new Astro Turf which was built to benefit both the school and the Gelvandale community.

The initiative was an idea of Bay Youth Development, who reeled in Street Fever to help them make this idea become a reality.

“They approached me early this year looking for a venue for the Astro Turf. We said yes as this idea can be very beneficial to the school,” said Gregory Appollis, principal of St Thomas High School.

The turf took no longer than three months to install, and according to Appollis, it has been drawing a lot of attention.

“The turf keeps the school busy, and it’s also for the community so there is a lot of positive energy being generated around.”

On Sunday October 18 the turf was open for the community, and according to Donavon Shahab, operational manager of Street Fever, the response was overwhelming.

“Sunday was the first opening for the community, and the response was really good, as we had over 100 kids there.”

On Tuesday, October 20, the turf was opened for the school, and the opening was attended by officials from Steet Fever as well as Bay Youth Development.

The event was attended by the metro’s mayor Danny Jordaan, and was opened with a friendly soccer game between St Thomas and Nasruddin Islamic High School.

CHILDHOOD OBESITY:

Large solutions needed for large problems REPORTER THE Heart and Stroke Foundation South Africa (HSFSA) shines a spotlight on ending childhood obesity.

Globally, obesity is rapidly on the rise.

For the first time in the history of mankind, the number of people who are overweight or obese measure up to the number of people who are underweight due to hunger.

It has been estimated that if something is not done about the surge of obesity, half of all people will be overweight/obese by 2030.

The most worrying is that this trend is not only seen amongst our adult population but also amongst children.

Over a decade, overweight has increased from 10.6% to 18.2% in South African children aged 2-5 years.

Consistently, girls and female adults are more affected. South Africa further carries a double burden of malnutrition with not only rising rates of childhood obesity but also still high prevalence of child undernutrition.

Undernutrition places a child at especially high risk for developing obesity, which then promotes the vicious cycle which we are grappling with in the current socio-economic environment.

Being overweight or obese increases one’s risk of heart disease and stroke, high blood pressure, diabetes and certain cancers.

Overweight or obese children have an increased risk of developing these diseases earlier in life and are more likely to remain obese throughout their adult life.

Not only does obesity have far reaching health effects for a child, but it also has vast social and economic implications. These can include bullying, teasing and low selfesteem, as well as increased healthcare costs and loss of income later in life.

So what then is the cause for the increase in obesity amongst our children? Poverty, unhealthy diets and physical inactivity are largely to blame.

According to Dr Vash Mungal-Singh, CEO of the HSFSA, “Our children are being brought up in an obesogenic environment where unhealthy foods are aggressively marketed to them, time in front of computers and televisions are increasing and appropriate environments for children to be active, safely, are few and far between.”

With urbanisation we have also seen an increase in the consumption of sugarsweetened beverages, energy-dense, nutrient poor foods and lower consumption of fruit and vegetables.

Poor feeding practices early in a child’s life further exacerbate the problem. Stud-

ies have shown that there is a link between low birth weight and overweight later in life due to overfeeding as an infant.

The introduction of ‘weaning foods’ too early (before 6 months of age) is another key driver of obesity later in life.

In fact a child’s risk starts even before birth with the health and diet of the mother, a concept referred to as the importance of the first 1000 days of a child’s life (from conception to 2 years of age). Poverty has an overarching impact within this context.

Lower income groups tend to have higher obesity rates as they opt for foods that are cheap and the most filling, which often mean high in energy, fat, sugar and salt with very little other nutritional value. The pregnant mother and young child are most affected. It is clear that obesity is in fact a very complex problem that requires a multi-pronged approach.

We are therefore very fortunate to have the support of the National Department of Health in tackling this epidemic with a clear strategy and bold target to decrease the prevalence of obesity by 10% by 2020.

This strategy builds on the guidelines of the WHO initiative on ending childhood obesity and includes a wide spectrum of activities including policy and legislative change, education, access to healthy foods and safe places to be active.

The HSFSA wants to encourage all par-

ents and caregivers to take action and play their part to prevent overweight and obesity in their own children, starting with the pregnant mother.

It is imperative for all pregnant mothers to get appropriate care before, during and after pregnancy to ensure the healthy weight and growth of their babies.

Exclusive breastfeeding for the first six months of an infant’s life, followed by appropriate complementary foods is a very effective way in reducing the risk of obesity.

Providing healthy foods for young children and adolescents, limiting the intake of sugar-sweetened beverages and encouraging play time rather than TV time are all great strategies to combat overweight and obesity.

INVITATION TO ATTEND A PUBLIC MEETING TO ESTABLISH A SPECIAL RATING AREA (SRA) FOR ALL CENTRAL HILL PROPERTY OWNERS The Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), a municipal entity of the Nelson Mandela Bay Municipality (NMBM), established for the purpose of rejuvenating the Port Elizabeth Central Business District (CBD) and other emerging nodes in the Nelson Mandela Bay, hereby invites you to a SRA meeting. This is a follow up meeting that seeks to address the issue of leveraging additional revenue for certain services in Central such as security and cleansing. Such revenue collected will be managed by the body representing the property owners and such an approach is in keeping with international best practice and is successfully applied in many cities worldwide.

As a starting point, it is suggested that Central Hill property owners be gathered to decide on their pilot area. As the first SRA has been successfully established in Richmond Hill in 2014, its recipe will be implemented in other areas of the NMBM. There are many examples across the world where decayed parts of cities have been restored, not only through public investment, but also through the payment of an additional levy on property values, enabling property owners to manage such pool of funds to the benefit of their areas in respect of private sector services.

Honda’s new HR­V crosses many labels IS it a Coupe, or an SUV or an MPV? Or a bit of everything? The last is probably the correct answer when classifying the new HR-V – a vehicle which the people at Honda call an urban crossover.

One thing that is for sure is that this Coupe/ SUV/MPV is sitting pretty among the 12 finalists for the 2016 Wesbank/SAGMJ Car of the Year competition and Express on Wheels had it for a week to test drive.

And this interesting combination can be summarised in two things that stood out for me in the HR-V, i.e. space and style. It looks like a sleek coupe but offers the space and versatility of an MPV and the sporty feel of an SUV. The new Honda HR-V is available with a choice of two petrol engines sporting two trim levels - the 1.5 Comfort and the 1.8 Elegance. Both engines are linked to a new-generation, Earth Dreams technology Constantly Variable Transmission (CVT). The vehicle test driven is the higher spec 1.8 Elegance.

Exterior The pronounced curve of the roofline gives the HR-V a coupé-like look while emphasized wheel arches give it the raised stance of an SUV. The design in the front is unmistakably Honda, with tapered headlights framing a V-shaped grille. The rear is dominated by large tail light

Interior The interior look is very much determined by which of the two models it is, ie. the lower spec 1.5-litre Comfort or the top of the range 1.8-litre Elegance.

The 1.5 litre Comfort comes with cloth seats and 5 inch screen, while the Elegance trim sports leather seats and a 7-inch touch screen with rearview camera. Both systems feature Bluetooth connectivity for hands-free phone use and audio streaming, USB connections, a CD player, and multiple speakers.

In addition, the Elegance sports LED daytime running lights, as well as a keyless entry and a stop start button as part of Honda’s Smart Entry system.

Most impressive is the huge boot on this car.

I had the benefit of test driving it during a week in which I helped family move house, and it was the ideal opportunity to put the versatility of the HR-V to the test. Honda’s unique Magic Seat system adds further practicality and flexibility as this allows for the seat part of some of the seats to be folded upwards for bigger vertical space.

By lap 18 the circuit had dried enough to change onto slicks. As conditions changed so too the challenge of the Red Bull’s diminished in the dry conditions. With superior pace Nico Rosberg retook the lead of the race and proceeded to build a stunning ten second gap over Hamilton.

This was the Nico Rosberg performance we had been waiting to see all season. By this point, it was a strong, determined drive that would delay Hamilton’s winning of the world championship.

On lap 28 the Sauber of Marcus Ericsson ground to a halt at turn 11 and required the deployment of the safety car to recover the car. Rosberg’s nearly 11 second lead over Hamilton was completely eradicated. Sebastian Vettel, who had fought his way into fifth, took the opportunity to fit a set of mediums to see him through to the end of the race. The Ferrari driver made short work of Kvyat and Ricciardo to move himself into third.

It wasn’t long before the virtual safety car was called on again - this time to clear the Force India of Nico Hulkenberg. It prompted Rosberg to pit as Hamilton took the lead of the race.

By lap 42 Hamilton had a six-second gap over Rosberg and as Red Bull driver Daniil Kvyat clouted the barrier at the final turn, bringing out the safety car, the Brit dived into the pitlane for a new set of tyres. It dropped Hamilton behind Rosberg and it seemed as if he would have to wait at least one more week to secure the title.

However, in a bizarre twist Rosberg ran off the circuit at turn 16 and gifted the lead of the race to Hamilton. Rosberg just held on for second in the closing stages ahead of Vettel.

This ensured that as Hamilton crossed the line he was a three-time world champion.

Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen finished a

stunning fourth ahead of Force India’s Sergio Perez in fifth. Jenson Button brought his McLaren home in sixth whilst Carlos Sainz finished seventh in his Toro Rosso. Lotus’ Pastor Maldonado, Sauber Felipe Nasr and Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo rounded out the top ten.

Eight cars failed to make it to the chequered flag including Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen. For Williams too it was a weekend to forget with a double retirement. Manor Marussia driver Alex Rossi can hold his head high after matching the team’s best result with a twelfth place finish.

In an incredible season Lewis Hamilton has become only the tenth triple world champion in the history of the sport. Yes, Mercedes has provided him with an astonishing car to drive but the knowledge that Hamilton is a racer of the highest calibre has been there since his first lap at the 2007 Australian Grand Prix.

Now, Lewis Hamilton is no longer just on the cusp of greatness.

ON Friday and Saturday race fans would have been cursing at the biblical levels of rain that fell over Texas’ Circuit of the Americas.

It completely obliterated any opportunity of running in all but one of the practice sessions and forced a postponement of qualifying to Sunday morning.

However, as the weather cleared in time for Sunday’s race it was the changeable conditions that were the catalyst for a frenzied US GP. Mercedes driver Nico Rosberg snatched pole from teammate Lewis Hamilton in a shortened qualifying session while Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo and Daniil Kvyat locked out the second row of the grid.

Along with Williams’ Valtteri Bottas, who incurred a five-place penalty for changing a gearbox, both Ferrari drivers were demoted ten places on the grid for fitting a sixth, upgraded, engine. Sebastian Vettel started in thirteenth while Kimi Raikkonen lined up in eighteenth place.

The start of the race followed a familiar pattern between the two Mercedes drivers. Hamilton took the inside line into turn one and forced Rosberg wide and onto the run-off as the pair bumped wheels.

The move, which Rosberg later called “a step too far”, dropped the German down to fifth. As Red Bull’s Daniil Kvyat hounded the back of Hamilton’s Mercedes for the lead of the race the sister Red Bull was in close attendance in third. But a clash between Sauber teammates Felipe Nasr and Marcus Ericsson left enough debris at turn one for race control to call on the virtual safety car.

As the race restarted the superior performance of the Red Bull on the wearing intermediate tyres was enough for both its drivers to overtake Nico Rosberg. As the circuit dried it was evident that Daniel Ricciardo was able to look after his intermediate tyre slightly better than Hamilton and he took the lead of the race

The Global Diabetes Walk is an international event which supports and complements the World Diabetes Day campaign run by the International Diabetes Federation.

This year’s Nelson Mandela Bay leg is being sponsored by Refreshhh and will take place on World Diabetes Day – Saturday, November 14 - with all proceeds from the event going to the local branch of Diabetes SA in Port Elizabeth.

The Series will feature 10km, 5km, 3km and 1km open water swim races to give Swimming South Africa (SSA) registered swimmers their first opportunity of the season to achieve SSA qualifying times.

Open to all swimmers in the Province, the Series has been welcomed by triathletes and swimmers from the Border, Port Alfred and Grahamstown regions for bringing such an event closer to them.

Previously held at Marina Martinique in Jeffrey’s Bay, Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA) have been applauded for moving the event to a venue which is more accessible to the bulk of the provincial swimming community and into a fresh water environment which offers more accurate times in relation to other national events held around the country.

Sunday’s races will get underway at 8:30am with the 10km and 5km races starting at the same time. The 10km swimmers may register to have their 5km time recorded as well. The 3km starts at 10:30am and the 1km at 12pm.

In order for registered swimmers to qualify for team selection and/or attend the SA OWS national championships, they will be required to achieve an SSA qualifying time in their selected distance on at least two separate occasions.

The EC Swim Series is the only swimming event this season where such times will be recognised with the next EC Swim meet on 15th November and then again in January ahead of the NMBA Open Water Swimming Championships.

Registration for the events is possible on www.ecswim.co.za with late entries also accepted at the venue on Sunday morning from 8am. Directions available on the website.

Hundreds of MTB riders converged at Bekker School in Gauteng for the finals of the Spur Schools MTB league and Interprovincial Championships. North West nipped the coveted trophy from Gauteng with one point scoring 236 versus 235. Western Cape finished third with 197 points followed by Mpumalanga with 194 points. Completing the provincial log is Limpopo (145 points), Namibia (113 points), KwaZulu­Natal (81 points), Eastern Cape (70), Free State (68), Northern Cape (31) and Zimbabwe (19).
