MISS MATRIC DANCE 2015:

And the

TANYA VAN ZYL

A

FTER months of searching for our Miss Matric Dance of 2015, the winner was finally crowned last Tuesday.

She is the radiant Sameera Scharneck from Theodor Herzl High School who bowled the judges over with her stunning dress and overall look for her matric dance at the Abraham Levy Centre in Perridgevale. Her dance was held on August 6. She was crowned the second Miss Matric Dance winner during an informal movie morning at Ster-Kinekor in the Baywest Mall (read more about the movie morning on pages 20 and 21). Sameera’s dress was made by Anita Seal from Anita’s Creative Designs. “I looked through different designs in magazines and on the internet and this specific design immediately caught my attention,” Sameera replied on where the inspiration for her dress came from. “I chose an off-white/ivory colour as I believed it would contrast nicely with my skin tone,” she added. Her hair was done by stylist Jackie at Nouvo, her make-up was done by Miléne Petersen Lippert and her nails were done by Sue at Juan Joubert. According to Sameera, the preparation period for her matric dance was about two months. “The whole process was very relaxed, as I knew exactly what I wanted.” She was accompanied to her dance by one of her best friends, Dane Mechali, “which made it extremely enjoyable. My expectations were highly exceeded; I absolutely loved my matric dance and wouldn’t change a thing!” she said. After reading about the Miss Matric Dance competition in the PE Express, Sameera decided to enter the competition but said she never expected to be a finalist and therefore never thought she would win. “It was definitely a

winner is . . . pleasant surprise though, and the gifts are wonderful!” Sameera was also a very busy matriculant. She was vice-head of the sports forum, vice-head of the culture forum, assistant Glee conductor, girls’ first team hockey captain, she received the hockey player of the year award (2014/2015), the Fellowship and Commitment to hockey award and a distinction in Trinity for individual acting skills and for acting in pairs. Sameera also represented South Africa in tumbling and trampolining gymnastics in New Zealand, Russia and Birmingham. In her free time she loves spending time with friends, but also enjoys playing the piano, running, reading and watching series. She will be attending the University of Cape Town next year and will be majoring in psychology. Her advice for next year’s matriculants attending a matric dance? “Don’t stress too much about the actual evening but be certain to make all your appointments well in advance. Have a good idea of the design you want before you take it to the designer to ensure that there are no glitches in the final outcome. Don’t forget to have fun!”
