Theft awareness: Older-model vehicles targeted THE police in Port Elizabeth are warning owners of older model vehicles to be more security conscious.

Recent crime statistics have shown an increase in the theft of older-model vehicles.

The common vehicles taken are the VW Golf, Mazda 323, Ford Laser, Toyota Tazz, Toyota Corolla and bakkies including the Izuzu and Toyo-

ta. All types of trailers are also stolen.

Many of these vehicles are taken from offstreet parking verges as well as shopping centres and malls.

Owners are urged to park their vehicles in their property and if they have a garage, to make use of it. Alternatively park the vehicle as close to the house as possible. – REPORTER

Big accolade for local police spokesperson CARA­LEE SCHEUN THE media and people of Nelson Mandela Bay know her as the voice of the police in the city, who has to be ready with answers, more often than not about heinous crimes, within minutes of it happening.

At the end of last year, Capt. Sandra Janse van Rensburg of the Mount Road Police Station, was rewarded for her dedication in representing the police while keeping the public informed, by being named as the police spokesperson of the year in the Eastern Cape.

“It is always a highlight when hard work is recognised,” said Janse van Rensburg modestly.

It is the first time in her seven years as liaison between the police and the media that she has been recognised in this way. But that can most probably be attributed to the fact that she has never entered herself for the award.

In the past the spokespersons had to enter for the award and motivate why they should be chosen. Last year the award was, however, not open for applications, and Janse van Rensburg was selected as winner. “ A communication person of a company is not only a spokesperson, but also the face of the company for the public and therefore such a person must set an example and have an irreproachable character,” is how the award was described during the announcement.

Although surprised at receiving the award, she attributes her success to her commitment to continually build and strengthen working relationships.

“I realise everyone has a job to do. The media

Ensure that domestic workers are not soft targets REPORTER THE police are asking employers of domestic workers to remind them to be vigilant as they are alone at the house most of the day and are often seen as soft targets by house burglars.

According to police spokesperson Captain Sandra Janse van Rensburg employers continuously have to communicate with domestic workers to be alert when alone at home and keep the doors locked when they are inside the house.

She said the employer should always inform the domestic worker if someone was coming to do chores at the house and they should be instructed not to allow anyone entry to the house if it had not been cleared with the home owner.

“Ensure that the domestic worker has a way to contact the owner via WhatsApp or by SMS if she is in a difficult situation.

“Ensure that everyone in the house knows how to use the alarm system, and knows where the panic buttons are situated,” Janse van Rensburg said.

Local teen completes Robben Island Crossing REPORTER ALEXANDER Road High pupil, Amy Erasmus (17), successfully completed her first Robben Island crossing on December 18.

Amy was accompanied by English Channel swimmer and motivational speaker, Toni Enderli, who helped guide her until her hands reached sand.

Also accompanying her, was her support crew, Derrick and Debbie Frazer from Big Bay Events.

A large pod of dolphins also spent a few exhilarating moments swimming with them.

Not to be left out of the limelight three humpback whales decided to pop past and check on the swimmers as well.

“After the acute disappointment of aborting a swim in extreme conditions in May 2015, we were over the moon to advise Amy that the weather forecast was looking promising for an attempt at the extreme open water crossing. The crossing from Robben Island to Blouberg covers a distance of 7.4km in the hostile Atlantic Ocean where the cold water ensures only very well prepared swimmers can succeed,” said Derrick Frazer, who

is also a committee member of the Cape Long Distance Swimming Association.

The promised conditions materialized on the day and after checking and double checking safety equipment, electronic shark shields, swimmers’ feeds and drinks they launched the IRB and made their way to Robben Island.

At 7.55am Amy, clad in a swimming costume, single swimming cap and goggles, raised her hand and plunged into the cold Atlantic waters and started swimming towards Blouberg.

Support on the IRB guided her on the shortest route towards Big Bay on the Blouberg coast and carried her feeds.

Scheduled feeding took place every 30 minutes to ensure she maintained her strength and energy reserves as the cold water forces the body to work hard to maintain a functional core temperature.

At 10.32am Amy walked clear of the water and achieved her dream of completing this gruelling swim.

“The smiles and excitement bursting from her face hid the effort and pain that she had pushed her body through for the previous 2 hours and 37 minutes,” Frazer said.

Both Marco and Robyn are living proof that one can rise above tragedy and one’s circumstances and achieve success.

Marco, of Holland Park, has been working since Grade 9 to not only save money for his tertiary studies but also help supplement his single mom’s income.

These past holidays he was again at his post at Trade Value in Korsten to earn enough money for his registration fees at NMMU where he has been accepted for a BA Degree in Geography.

He plans to become a teacher.

“I am the oldest of four and my brothers and sisters are 13, 10 and 9 years old. Half of my salary goes towards our household expenses and the rest I save to pay the registration fees. The other fees I will save up during the rest of the year,” said Marco.

Marco achieved an average of 80,5% in the record exam, and despite struggling in the final exams, he managed to retain his distinctions in tourism and mathematics.

His dream of becoming a teacher was inspired by one

of his own teachers.

“Mr Ludick, my life orientation teacher, always said ‘nothing in life is for free - one has to work hard for it’ and ‘one cannot expect to start at the top.’

I am not scared to work hard for that which I would like to achieve in life,” Marco said.

Another learner who has risen above tragedy to do well in the exams is Robyn Piedt whose best friend, Lisa, died in a horror accident during the exams.

Robyn’s marks were above 90% and she is the top learner of the Bay’s northern areas.

She says one should aim high and keep one’s eye on the goalpost, while remembering that the

needs of others are often bigger than your own.

“Even if she is writing an exam the next day, she will still spend time to first help her friends who are struggling to ensure that they do well too,” said her mom Filida Piedt.

Robyn achieved distinctions in all seven her subjects.

“Discipline and the determination to achieve success is all one needs to achieve success. Set yourself a goal and do not lose sight of it,” said Robyn. This avid hockey player was also head girl of her school and served on the junior city council.

This year she will study medicine at the University of Stellenbosch and hopes to become a paediatrician.

Cheese Pot De Creme Serves 8

By Chef Bernice Warner Ingredients * 500ml double thick cream * 500ml full cream milk * 6 springs thyme * 4 black peppercorns * Pinch of salt * 8 egg yolks * ½ cup grated blue cheese * 1/3 cup chopped walnuts * 2 whole green preserved figs,thinly sliced and set aside Melba toast, to serve Method Preheat oven to 160 degrees Celsius. Place 6 x 180ml ramekins in a roasting pan on a folded kitchen towel. Heat the cream, milk, thyme and peppercorns over a low heat until small bubbles begin to form along the edges. Season with salt and set aside to infuse for about 5 minutes then strain to remove the thyme and peppercorns. Whisk egg yolks in a large bowl and stir in the grated cheese, slowly whisk into the milk and cream the mixture until smooth. Pour mixture into ramekins and fill the roasting pan with hot water until it reaches 2/3 up the sides of the ramekins. Bake for 30-40 minutes or until the custards are set. Remove from the oven and allow to cool in the water bath. Remove once cooled and refrigerate overnight. To serve, sprinkle chopped walnuts, a few slices of preserved fig and serve with Melba toast.

You may use Parmesan cheese and hazelnut as another variation or white cheddar and cashew nuts.

“Ek het die normale tienerlewe vaarwel toegeroep. Dit was koor in die oggend, koor in die middag en koor in die aand,’’ spot sy.

Dié ma van drie het seker gemaak dat sy lewe blaas in elke skoolkoor waarby sy betrokke was.

By die Laerskool Hantam in die Noord-Kaap asook die Despatch Primêre Skool in die OosKaap, waar sy tot onlangs nog onderwyseres was, is talle kinderstemme juis deur haar vernuf ontwikkel. “ ’n Koor is die hartklop van ’n skool. Musiek laat kinders van die vals note in hul lewens vergeet. Baie kom uit gebroke huise en in die koor kan hulle vir ’n ruk lank van alles vergeet, mooi lyk vir ’n rukkie en aandag en drukkies kry wat hulle normaalweg nie sou kry nie,” vertel sy.

Die Despatch- Primêre skoolkoor het juis onder haar leiding een prys ná die ander ingeryg.

Dié koor is ook onder meer sedert 2010 die OosKaapse top-koor in die ATKV Applous-korekompetisie.

Haar koordroom het egter nie hiér geëindig nie.

Die jongste ontwikkeling is egter die Nascosangensemble vir gr. 7-leerders wat as bousteen vir ’n jeugkoor in die noordelike voorstede sal dien.

Hoewel Van Wyk vir eers die klaskamer groet en binnekort ’n pos as verteenwoordiger van die Suid-Afrikaanse Onderwysersunie gaan beklee, klop haar hart steeds warm vir die jeug.

“Ek is steeds ’n onderwyser, maar gaan dinge net uit ’n ander hoek benader. In dié bedryf – uit watter oord ook al – is die welstand en toekoms van ons kinders steeds die belangrikste.”

Cinderella wand for matrics SASHIKA PILLAY APART from the release of the matric results, the most anticipated event in the final year of high school is the matric farewell dance.

Sadly, not every matric pupil can afford to attend this dance, said Annelise Damons, founder of the Cinderella Foundation in Bloemendal.

The foundation, which is the brainchild of Damons and her sister, Ingrid Kallies, is a non-profit organisation, established last year in April. The foundation aims to help underprivileged matrics by providing them with dresses or suits for their matric dance and assisting with hair, nails and make-up.

“For many girls, a matric dance is something that is spoken about and dreamed of from the beginning of their matric year.”

Damons chose the name ‘Cinderella Foundation’ because she wanted to make matric dance wishes come true.

“These matrics have spent many years studying and this is a way of rewarding them for staying in school because we know it’s not easy, especially financially,” Damons added.

The Cinderella Foundation was inspired by her son, Lesley Damons, who was unable to complete high school.

“My son was supposed to be in matric last year but he was assaulted by two bullies a few years ago.

“He couldn’t finish school due to brain damage. I want to encourage young people not to leave school if they have the ability to complete it,” she said.

Although the foundation is less than a year old, Damons, together with the help of her volunteers and sponsors, has helped over 150 matrics

attend their matric farewell dance.

“Most of the girls have never used make up or had their hair and nails done before, so it’s a privilege to help them feel special,” she said.

Nasherlee Collins (18) who attended Bethelsdorp Comprehensive High School last year, said that on the day of her matric dance, she felt like a Disney Princess.

“The Cinderella Foundation really helped me. I had my own dress but I still needed to get my hair, nails and make-up sorted. It was stressful but they (Cinderella Foundation) came to my rescue and made me look and feel like a princess,” Collins said.

The foundation recently started assisting underprivileged couples who are struggling with wedding preparations due to financial reasons.

“We don’t sponsor the whole wedding but we help with wedding dresses, suits, accessories and

discounts for hair, nails and make up,” Damons said.

The foundation only requests R100 donation from the matric pupil. After the dance, the dress, suit, shoes and accessories must be returned in the original condition to the foundation.

“I hope I will get more sponsors because we have problems with transport to take the matrics to their ball.”

“My wish for 2016 is that we help even more matrics than last year that’s why we’re planning on having a function soon to raise funds. It will be like a ball for those out of school or who did not attend their farewell dance,” Damons said.

What a topsy­turvy world!

REMEMBER that jolly old song, “It’s not how you start, it’s how you finish”? Even the most tone-deaf of sportsmen hum it at times.

Specially if they’re down, as in being behind.

It’s also why come tomorrow new Proteas captain, AB de Villiers, should be humming it, loud and clear, to his lads as they take the field with bat or ball at Jo’burg’s Wanderers Stadium in the vital third cricket Test against England.

It’s make or break as England, thanks to the walk-away win in the first Test and the weather having the final say at Newlands, are a crucial one-up in the four-match series. Strangely though, the drawn result in the shadow of Table Mountain, produced some of the tour’s finest

cricket so far.

Who would have imagined or forecast such splendid displays from both sides – some strangely shaky fielding, too – as the crowds at Newlands were entertained right up to the moment the weather intervened? Imagine the raised eyebrows the forecasting of the twists and turns the match in fact took.

Double centuries on either side, for Pete’s sake!

Dropped catches almost the order of the day. And the drama didn’t stop there. In addition to Hashim Amla’s double ton there was a maiden undefeated century by pint-sized Temba Bavuma, and to top it all the Proteas captain had another trick up his sleeve.

He didn’t want the captaincy! That really took the cake. Why? Rumours abounded until Amla himself, in his quietly spoken way, explained in typical no-nonsense fashion, his reason.

Simply told he made two things clear: he might like to reclaim the captaincy later – but for now he wasn’t giving of his best because the cares of captaincy were wearing him down.

Ridding himself for the time-being of these cares was already – the commanding 201 – showing dividends.

The SA-England series is far from over.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

What to look out for in F1 2016 2016 is here and it brings with it the opportunity to create a dynamic, and with any luck, an unforgettable new chapter of Formula 1 racing. Already an array of topics from driver line-ups to power unit suppliers is demanding attention.

Ferrari expectations The Italian marquee’s 2015 season, while not earth shattering, has created big expectations in Italy. The rest of the world, whose perspective is a bit more realistic than that of the passion infused Tifosi, knows that even matching the might of Mercedes is not a foregone conclusion. Since joining the team in 2013 Technical director James Alison is now firmly entrenched in Ferrari.

The turnaround from a disastrous 2014 to a race-winning 2015 means serious pressure on Alison and his team to perform in 2016.

It will be the responsibility of team Principal Maurizio Arrivabene to keep his team focused on its goals and to temper the expectations of the Ferrari board and its fans.

Mercedes quandary It’s no question that where it concerns driver line-ups the spotlight will be squarely focused on the “relationship” between Mercedes drivers Nico Rosberg and Lewis Hamilton. Through their partnerships both have enjoyed spectacular and conversely poor moments and spent plenty of time sulking in respective corners. Up until now the

team has been able to handle its drivers without too much issue. But the balancing act between placating both drivers and avoiding a full blown war between the two is a tenuous line.

If Mercedes finds itself as the runaway leader of the pack again team director Toto Wolff has said it may prompt them to allow the drivers free reign when it comes to strategy, thereby “improving the show.” For the sake of the show let’s hope Mercedes has a real challenger.

Renault resurgence The French manufacturer’s purchase of the Lotus F1 Team has been made official which will see the championship winning constructor return to the sport as a fullyfledged works team. 2016 is a big year in many ways for Renault of which priority number one will be to silence the boisterous criticism of its power unit.

Venezuelan driver Pastor Maldonado has been retained by Renault for 2016 and will be partnered by British rookie Jolyon Palmer. Together these two drivers will form one of the weakest driver line-ups of the season.

While Palmer appears to be a solid driver any rookie is a leap into the unknown. Normally, a teammate with five years worth of experience would be useful for someone like Palmer. But when that teammate is Pastor Maldonado it’s a bit of a different story.

Many will attest to the fact that you could

hardly meet a greater gentleman than Pastor Maldonado in the F1 paddock. He has shown glimpses of real potential throughout his F1 career including the stunning victory at the 2012 Spanish Grand Prix. But the Venezuelan has a big chink in his armour – his habitual tendency to crash frequently and expensively. For Renault the conservative objective is to finish solidly in the top ten and perhaps snatch a podium or two should the frontrunners fail to reach the chequered flag. Their drivers will have to step-up is this is to be achieved.

Haas’ sure­fire plan Gene Haas is American racing royalty but he isn’t banking on his stateside fame and success to make it in Formula 1. The team has forged an alliance with Ferrari who will supply Haas with a power unit. In addition, Ferrari can also supply the American team with front and rear suspension and share in the R&D costs. While Ferrari supplies the mechanical side of the Haas car Italian manufacturer Dallara has designed its chassis.

This resourceful recipe should catapult this team firmly into the midfield.

The next step in preparation for the 2016 season is for the customary shakedown tests of the new cars to be completed before they’re unveiled to the world. Most teams have announced mid-February launches for the respective cars just ahead of the vital first test session of the season.

Xterra comes to Nelson Mandela Bay

Venter dominates Ocean Series WHILE record numbers attended last Sunday’s aQuellé Ocean Racing Series at Hobie Beach in near perfect conditions, the Series leaders are starting to dominate the leader board with just four race days remaining for Season XI. Young Ian Venter claimed his 5th 1km Ocean Swim win of the Season to remain unbeaten over this distance as over 500 people entered for Round 6 last week. Venter was followed by Jeffrey’s Bay’s Seth De Swardt with Joshua Bellairs in third place whilst in the ladies’ 1km division it was Kirsten Marriott who claimed gold from Amy Mardon and Natalie Ogden.

The most popular event on the morning was the 2km Ocean Swim with 140 entries and this was won Daniel Jones with Josh McGrath in second and Jarryd Cooke third whilst Antonelle Saporta won the ladies’ division from About IT Triathlon Summer Series champion Liza Kingston with Masters swimmer Denise Bosman in third place. Dylan Smith won the 3km Ocean Swim with Wayne Jones and Merrick Fairall placing second and third respectively.

In the 3km Ladies’ Swim it was Rebecca Newman from Brigitte Melly and Delwen Henderson.

On the beach the action was just as hot with Dylan Finlay extending his lead in the overall

5km beach run standings with another fine victory ahead of Njabulo Khumalo and Samkelo Tetyana whilst Tara Sacke took the ladies’ beach run from Sanet Owen and Lindi Van Tonder.

In the 5km Beach Walk it was Grobbie Grobler from Juan Slabbert and Andrew Armstrong with Maritza Craig winning the ladies’ race from Belinda Niemand and Emily Stemmett.

Open water swimming action for this weekend moves to Settlers Dam in Grahamstown for the third round of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA) EC Swim Series which takes place on Sunday morning (see www.ecswim.co.za for further information). All this ahead of the very busy February swimming period which features key open water races on each weekend. The NMBA open water 10km and 3km Championship races take place on Sunday, February 7, the 5km Championships on Sunday, February 14, whilst the 92nd SPAR River Mile takes place on the weekend of 20th and 21st and the Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge 5km ocean swim will take place on Saturday, February 27.

THE country’s premier off-road triathlon, the Fedhealth XTERRA will make its PE debut the weekend of January 29 to 31 at Kings Beach.

“XTERRA Port Elizabeth will not be a traditional XTERRA SA Event. While it won’t feature an Urban course, it will have a ‘City Feel’ to it. It will also boast with an ocean swim,” said Michael Meyer, Managing Director of Stillwater Sports, organisers of the event.

An XTERRA Kids race will be taking place

on the Friday, XTERRA Full on the Saturday, XTERRA Lite and PUMA Trail Run on the Sunday.

Junior Warriors will be able to enter one of three age categories: 6-8 years (50m Swim, 1,5km Cycle, 1km Run), 9-11 years (100m Swim, 5km Cycle, 2km Run) and 12-14 years (200m Swim, 10km Cycle, 3km Run).

All XTERRA Kids entrants can look forward to receiving a goodie bag, while medals will be awarded to all finishers.
