Water leak ignored LOURENS SCHOEMAN

A

CHARLO resident has been battling since October last year for the water and sanitation department to attend to a leak in a park, but without any luck or any response, causing a loss of water to the tune of more than R66 500.

Eugene Weitz says he returned from a

holiday on October 5 last year and on taking his dogs for a walk in the park between Harold, Angela and Walther roads in Charlo he noticed a water leak. Thinking that it had most probably been reported, he took no action.

He said the water that had been wasted since he first reported it added up to about R66 528 and was increasing.

He calculated that amount by taking a flow of a litre per second, meaning 60 litres

for every minute and 604 800 litres a week at an average price of R10/kl. It means that the municipality has wasted more than R66 500 while it was aware of the leak.

“On October 18 I noticed that the leak had not been repaired and I immediately reported it to the municipality. On November 1 I once again reported the leak to the municipality, but they refused to give me another reference number, as I had already reported it earlier.

“On November 10 there was still no reaction from the municipality. I then reported it to the DA ward councillor for Ward 8, who referred the complaint to Ward 6, as it is their area of responsibility,” Weitz said, adding that the DA had told him they were also still waiting for a response.

Summer stats sizzle REPORTER IN order to promote the attractions of Nelson Mandela Bay to a wider audience, Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism (NMBT) has set a challenge for locals and visitors to the city during summer season.

Using the hashtags #ShareTheBay and #MyNelsonMandelaBay, participants are invited to capture and share their summer experiences with the world on social media.

The campaign was launched on December 1, 2015. With over 700 moments, stories and images already being shared on Facebook, Twitter and Instagram, the campaign is proving to be a huge success.

“We asked everyone to express their love for Nelson Mandela Bay by capturing their festive moments and sharing them with the world,” explained Mandlakazi Skefile, CEO of Nelson Mandela Bay Tourism. “And the response has been overwhelmingly positive.”

Through this campaign NMBT has been able to share authentic experiences directly from other visitors and locals. Authentic experiences are more likely to motivate new and future visitors to the destination and the facilities.

NMBT welcomed scores of locals and visitors who flocked to the coastal destination to cool down at the beach and enjoy all the attractions and activities on offer.

As temperatures rose with little to no wind the destination provided great relief through the beach offerings and swimming facilities such as MacArthur’s pools and Splash Waterworld.

NMBT was fully prepared with information services on offer for visitors

through the visitor information offices situated at The Donkin, The Boardwalk, Port Elizabeth International Airport arrivals, as well as in Uitenhage.

In addition welcome desks were provided for all cruise liners docking as passengers disembarked.

Popular queries received at the tourism offices over and above those seeking accommodation were for activities and attractions.

Popular activities included Addo Elephant National Park, stand up paddle surfing hire, bicycle rentals as well as Route 67 guided walks.

“We were prepared for a busy summer holiday as Nelson Mandela Bay is fast becoming a destination of choice among travellers through providing convenience and accessibility to explore a variety of experiences,” said Skefile.

An increase of visitors was definitely noted through the tourism offices and accommodation occupancy numbers provisionally also reflecting a positive increase of visitors to the area.

The final numbers and tourism impact for summer will be available as of the end of January as we are still in the middle of peak season.

Tourism stakeholders and business have thus far reported an increase in trade. These include new additions to our city such as the Baywest mall as well as Uber who launched their convenient transport system at the beginning of December 2015.

“We are so excited to be in Port Elizabeth; the uptake since launching has been incredible. People are loving having an alternative choice in moving around their city, at a very affordable price point. We have really changed the way the world thinks about trans-

portation and we look forward to continued growth in PE,” confirmed Samantha Allenberg, spokesperson for Uber PE. As per Fayroush Ludick, Regional Manager: Communications, SANParks, “Addo Elephant National Park outside Port Elizabeth, noted a 4.4% increase in visitors – from 27 601 in December 2014 to 28 815 last year. The park also registered an 18.6% increase in the number of activities sold, up from 3 061 to 3 629. The Park’s entrance gate along the N2 just outside Colchester, Camp Matyholweni, continues to attract more visitors due to its accessibility from PE. Gate entry figures increased by 13% over the corresponding months.”

Plenty to smile about in the year ahead REPORTER A TRYING 2015 has left many Nelson Mandela Bay residents apprehensive about the year ahead, but there is hope, according to the city’s Business Chamber.

Business Chamber chief executive officer Kevin Hustler said the local, national and global economy would continue to come under immense pressure in 2016 but that he was “cautiously optimistic� about ongoing investment in the metro. “Among the highlights of 2015 were the growth of Baywest City around the R2-billion Baywest Mall, which opened last May, the Coega Development Corporation’s record investment year, and Transnet’s continued investment of R26.7 billion in the manganese corridor. “There were also significant investments in the automotive sector by the three big OEMs in the city,� said Hustler.

As national and multinational companies continued to invest in Nelson Mandela Bay, several up-and-coming entrepreneurs had also followed suit by growing the small business sector in the city, he said. “We have a wealth of talent in our region and commend our young entrepreneurs who still see the business opportunities in Nelson Mandela Bay, despite the challenging economic circumstances.�

Assisting in the spread of positive stories about the region is the soon-to-be launched nonprofit website Good News Daily, which is run by media and public relations company Good News Lab. Headed up by chamber member and Top 40 Under 40 Achiever Brian Hayward, the website aims to instil pride in their region among residents. “Through Good News Lab as well as the Good News Daily website, we are really hoping to highlight the good news stories that there are out there – from good people doing work at grass-

Hayward said his company had further shown its commitment to the city by setting up shop in the redeveloped Donkin Creative Quarter, which dovetails with the greater urban renewal vision for the Central area.

According to Marios van Dongen of Bowman

Property Group, who are the marketing and letting agents for the development, the Donkin Creative Quarter was poised to become a good indicator of entrepreneurial confidence in the metro.

Van Dongen said the Donkin Street side of the development was now 90 per cent let, while leasing for the Constitution Hill side had begun this month, with the various buildings scheduled for occupation from March onwards. “The response from the creative industry has

been amazing,� said Van Dongen. “The younger market wants to come back to the CBD. This area, with its historic homes, has more character than the traditional corporate office blocks.�

He said developers’ investment in projects like the creative quarter had given young entrepreneurs the confidence to return and offered them modern infrastructure with which to run their businesses.

There is also a small pool where the water is siphoning out, giving the birdlife a welcome drinking hole.

“The leak can be clearly seen as there is a little puddle of water where the birds drink water.

As you look from the puddle in the direction of Walter Road, the lush growth of grass indicates where the water is coming from as there is a very clear “arrow” of green growth towards Walther Road.

“The soil is soaked for the whole width of the park and about 70 metres towards the direction of 17th Avenue,” Weitz said. )The Nelson Mandela Bay municipality had not responded to queries by the time of going to print.

Business Chamber strongly rejects further electricity increases THE Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber strongly rejects additional increases in electricity tariffs for 2016.

The Chamber said in a statement on Monday, that lobbying on behalf of their members on issues that affect their sustainability, the Business Chamber simply cannot accept the raising of tariffs by nearly 17% by April this year, instead of the 8% already agreed upon.

Representatives from the Business Chamber will today present their concerns at the National Energy Regulator of South Africa (Nersa)’s public hearing on Eskom’s Regulatory Clearing Account (RCA) application for the third year multi-year price determination (MYPD3).

Eskom has applied for an RCA balance of R22.8 billion.

“Citizens and businesses in Nelson Mandela Bay cannot afford increases beyond the original MYPD3 and, once granted, this application would not be in the interest of an enabling environment for business to be globally competitive – particularly in the current economic climate,” the statement read.

“Business simply cannot absorb the effects

of this RCA application, which we believe is to recover inefficiencies in maintenance and planning by Eskom.”

Against the background of a crippling drought, national political instability and the depreciation of the Rand, the Chamber proposes that tariffs must, in fact, be contained and minimised to accommodate businesses, who find themselves under immense strain, to counter the economic downturn by stimulating growth and employment in the country.

Electricity tariffs have increased almost five fold since 2001 and as a result business has had to reduce its usage of power and invest in alternative energy as prices continue to escalate.

“This could inevitably lead to further reduction of investment and employment in the country.

“The Nelson Mandela Bay Business Chamber will continue to be at the forefront of protecting businesses’ interest in relation to uncompetitive electricity tariffs, as we did last year by lobbying in various public meetings and behind the scenes for the future sustainability of the city’s economy,” the statement read. – REPORTER

This is according to Athol Trollip, DA mayoral candidate, who recently visited the family of Caydene Ruiters (2), who died in gang crossfire last year.

The plan to which Trollip referred, was accepted in 2012 by Helen Sauls-August, then the MEC for human settlements, safety and liaison, and published in the Government Gazette. It would come into effect on February 11, 2012.

However, the current mayor, Danny Jordaan, requested a “tangible plan” for the metro police in October last year, said Trollip.

WHILE the Nelson Mandela Bay Metro continues to build its metro police force, a complete plan for this force had already been accepted by the province nearly four years ago.

“This plan should have been submitted by the end of November, but two months later there is still no plan and no officers,” Trollip said.

“It means that our people are still living in unsafe conditions. Crime and gang violence immerse the community in fear, with 80% of residents who fear leaving their homes at night.”

According to Trollip the existing plan for the metro police would be “adequate” to combat these problems.

“The plan, whereby the police is managed by the Directorate for safety and security, includes the establishment of police stations, the maintenance of municipal regulations, and the requirements for the training of officers. It’s been checked by experts and covers all the necessary requirements for a police force.”

Moeë gebou herrys as koffieplek ’n EGPAAR van die Baai het nuwe lewe ingeblaas in ’n 111-jarige gebou in Sentraal deur dit in ’n koffiewinkel, Savages, te omskep.

Die winkel is geleë in die gebou bekend as die Victorian Veranda wat ’n belangrike deel van die Baai se geskiedenis uitmaak.

“Dié buurt was vroeër die hart van die stad,” sê Cindy Hoekstra, eienaar van Savages. “Dit was ook destyds die woning van William Savage jr., ’n voormalige burgemeester in die dorp.

Die Savages was bekende Baaienaars aan die begin van die vorige eeu. William Savage sr. het die helfte van die geld vir ons pragtige stadsbiblioteek gegee, en sy loodglas-portret kan daar gesien word. Dit is dan waar die koffiewinkel sy effens omstrede naam gekry het.”

Die gebou is aanvanklik deur haar man, Konrad, ’n plastiese chirurg in die stad, gekoop om as spreekkamer te gebruik. “Die gebou was erg verwaarloos nadat dit as ’n studentekommune bedryf is en haweloses later hul intrek geneem het. Soos ons meer oor die geskiedenis van die pragtige gebou geleer het, het ons besluit om dit eerder te gebruik vir iets wat ons met die Baaise

mense kan deel. “Die idee ontstaan toe om ’n koffiewinkel te hê wat ook konferensies kan huisves, met ’n geskenkwinkel om dit aan te vul.”

Dit was ook vir hulle belangrik om die gebou te restoureer om die erfenis te behou.

“Konrad het die planne self behartig, en baie van die houtstrukture self gebou,” sê Cindy.

“Soms moes ons om 22:00 met flitsligte in die gebou rondstap om planne te beraam. Dit was vir ons ’n liefdeswerk – ons wou iets beeldskoons skep waarop die mense van Port Elizabeth kan trots wees.”

Hulle kon die oorspronklike vloere en deure behou, maar het ’n moderne gevoel aan die koffiewinkel verleen waar hulle kon. Toe was die volgende stap om ’n kok te vind.

“Dit was vir my belangrik om mense aan te stel wat gelukkig sal wees hier, want jou werksplek is waar jy ’n groot deel van jou tyd deurbring,” sê Cindy. “ ’n Vriendin van Kaapstad het vir my ’n kok aanbeveel nadat sy haar kookkuns by ’n private geleentheid geproe het.”

vages aangestel. “Ek het haar gebel en dadelik van haar gehou. Toe ek haar later op Google soek, het ek besef ek het die boerpot gewen.”

Dít omdat Vanessa, self ’n Baaise boorling, reeds naam gemaak het toe sy in 2013 die Eat Out Nederburg Rising Star-toekenning gewen het.

“Ek het haar aangestel voordat ek nog haar kos geproe het,” vertel Cindy.

Nou werk Vanessa saam met Ally Kellett, nog ’n Baaienaar wat in Switserland as soetbakker (pastry chef) opgelei is.

Vanessa is in beheer van Savages se spyskaart.

“Die disse wat ons bedien, is alles eenvoudige kos, maar dit word op ’n elegante manier berei.

Ons gee baie aandag aan fyner besonderhede, en boonop kook ons op ’n volhoubare, organiese wyse.”

Selfs ná haar jare as kok in Kaapstad is sy steeds ’n Baaienaar in haar hart, sê sy.

“Die stad is kalm en eenvoudig, maar het ook genoeg vonkel en karakter. Ek kan nie wag om te sien hoe dit oor die volgende paar jaar ontwikkel nie. In Kaapstad is daar al jare ’n kultuur

rondom kookkuns, maar die Baai het soveel potensiaal,” sê Vanessa.

“Boonop is die mark hier nog nie so vol nie, so daar is meer ruimte om te groei.”

Cindy het juis planne om Savages in 2016 verder te ontwikkel. “Ek het ’n hele paar idees. Ons wil kos-en-wynparing aanbied, en dan wil ons die amfiteater voor die koffiewinkel ook voltooi.

Hier wil ons plaaslike musiekkunstenaars laat optree en pieknieks hou.”

Hoewel die ontwikkeling haar baie besig hou, sê Cindy sy is steeds dol oor die kompleks.

“Ek dink nie ek het aan die begin besef hoe baie van my tyd dit in beslag sou neem nie,” erken sy. “Ek sal baie graag ’n dag wil vry hê. Maar ek geniet dit, want elke dag ontmoet ek nuwe mense en die terugvoering is ongelooflik positief. ’n Hoogtepunt vir my en Konrad is as bejaarde Baaienaars ons kom vertel van hoe hulle die gebou onthou, en die leemtes in die geskiedenis daarvan kan aanvul.

“Ons lééf dié plek. Dit is iets wat ek en Konrad saam wou doen en iets wat ons baie liefhet.”

Uit teenspoed kom ’n blink plan vir kwadrupleeg ODETTE KEMP Hy was eers ’n lewenslustige nooddiensbeampte en ’n spesialis in rampbestuur, maar vandag leef Pieter Maziena (57) van Gauteng as ’n kwadrupleeg.

Maziena, ’n boorling van Kleinskool in Port Elizabeth, het in 1986 na Gauteng verhuis en tot 1989 as ’n motorwerktuigkundige gewerk. Hy het hom in 1990 bekwaam as ’n nooddiensbeampte in die Wesrand-distriksmunisipaliteit en hom in 2001 as ’n spesialis in rampbestuur toegerus.

Dié voorval het ’n vlak 5- en vlak 6-nekwerwelbesering veroorsaak wat hom nou al 14 jaar aan ’n rolstoel vaskluister.

Die lewe ná die ramp “Vir die eerste sewe jaar daarna moes ek myself aanpas as ’n kwadrupleeg,” vertel Maziena.

“Daarna het ek besluit om huise te koop, dit te verbeter en weer te verkoop. Van 2008 tot 2012 het ek twee huise beskikbaar gestel vir studente wat by die kollege in die dorp geleë was. Dié studente het dan in rigtings soos myningenieurswese ge-swot, waarna hulle by Anglo Gold Ashanti-myne gaan werk het.”

In Desember 2012 het hy besluit om dié verblyfreëling te beëindig en slegs een van

Maziena het toe ingenieurs van die myne asook die Noordwes-Universiteit, Goodyear en Firestone genader om wiele te ontwerp wat op die strand kan beweeg. Volgens hom was hulle dit eens dat hulle dit nie kon doen

Elke stoel het ook ’n sambreel om skaduwee te bied op ’n stranduitstappie, terwyl ’n piekniekmandjie of ’n koelkas op ’n rak agter die stoel vervoer kan word.

“Die rak is eintlik ’n strandtrollie wat bedoel en ontwerp is vir entrepreneurs om hul produkte te verkoop. Die wetgewing hiervoor moet egter nog finaal goedgekeur word. In dié stadium kan jy dit slegs gebruik vir jou koelkas.”

Maziena se onderneming is uiteindelik op 3 Desember verlede jaar in Jeffreysbaai se hoofstrand bekend gestel.

“Ná soveel jare se wroeging oor die toekoms het ek besluit om dié familie-onderneming in die Oos-Kaap bekend te stel – veral aangesien ek as ’t ware ’n produk van die Oos-Kaap is. My vrou en ons vier kinders is almal aandeelhouers in my droom, waarvan ek die uitvoerende hoof is.”

Dié onderneming is bekend as ’n eerste in Suid-Afrika vir entrepreneurs in samewerking met maatskaplike ontwikkeling, en Jeffreysbaai was die enigste strand in Suid-Afrika wat heeltemal rolstoelvriendelik is.

Maziena sê dat die hoofdoel is om rolstoeltoeganklikheid te integreer in alle munisipaliteite, volgens die nasionale plan van 2030.

Gilbert & Sullivan to present annual Valentines’ cabaret REPORTER THE Gilbert & Sullivan Society’s Valentine’s cabaret will celebrate its eighth year of entertaining the Bay next month.

The annual Valentine’s cabaret has been a popular showcase of Port Elizabeth’s talented

performers, and this year is no exception.

This year the show will be called Love, Love Me Do, after the classic Beatles song.

The cabaret will be a mix of music from the charts, classics and stage performances by the likes of Jody Butler, Melissa Leander, Khuselo Gqiba, Kasvia von Memerty, Phillip Cowie and Andrea Morris with a special

guest appearance by Viv von Memerty.

The Valentine’s Cabaret is not only for couples but for families and groups of friends as well.

With Valentine’s Day being on a Sunday, the show will run over four days from February, 11 to 14 at the Savoy Theatre.

The shows start at 7:30pm from February

Local poet launches EX press debut collection CLASSIFIEDS

SASHIKA PILLAY PEDDIE-born poet, Thabo Jijana, recently launched his debut collection of poems, titled Failing Maths and My Other Crimes at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan Art Museum.

The 27-year-old freelance journalist’s anthology was the first book to have been published by the uHlanga New Poets series, a new publishing imprint dedicated to publishing South Africa’s most promising young poets.

“Failing Maths is a book of poems that are narrative-driven, inspired by true life and all of them little studies on a life fully lived.

“On the whole, Failing Maths gathers work I have produced in the last five to six years,” Jijana said.

Jijana was the 2011 recipient of the Anthony Sampson Foundation Award. He was also the 2014 winner of the Sol Plaatje European Union Poetry Award for his poem titled Children Watching Old People. In the same year, he published his first book, Nobody’s Business, which is a memoir about the death of his father during a spate of taxi violence.

“My father, a taxi owner-driver in Peddie, was killed in 2003 in King William’s Town during a spate of taxi-related violence that affected both towns.

“On the day he was murdered, violence broke out at the Market Square taxi rank where my father and some of his colleagues were attending to matters related to how the two towns could share routes,” he said.

Jijana has always been passionate about writing but discovered his passion for poetry in high school.

“I became interested in poetry in high school when I came across a narrative poem by the late South African poet, Mafika Gwala, but I began to really pursue poetry as a voca-

tion at university.”

This year he will be studying towards an MA in Creative Writing at Rhodes University and as part of his studies, he will be working on a novel which he hopes to publish in the near future.

Hiking: The Voetsac Hiking Club runs both

weekend hikes and day walks on a regular basis.

Never was a truer word spoken!

WOULD you believe? Cricket the oh, so English game which spawned sons as famous as W G Grace, was in fact invented by – wait for it – the French! As far back as 1748 they were playing it, believe it or not!

You ever heard of famous French players? No? Well, isn’t that just typically French? But before we lose our way completely – what’s this all about?

Okay, it has nothing to do with the French except the loudmouthed bellowing of a spectator at Twickenham, where AB de Villiers’ Proteas were thrashed by seven wickets by England, who now have the series 2-0 in their pocket with one still to play.

That’s when this loud-mouthed fan bellowed, “Hey, this isn’t cricket, chaps!” Even if he’d had too much beer, it was strangely relevant.

It was aimed, it seemed, at the 13 players on the field, but you had to wonder whether it wasn’t a cry of pain at the state the “Gentleman’s Game” has got itself into recently over the mess caused by a cricketing son of the world’s eastern hem-

isphere many miles from Twickenham, a fellow by the name of Gulam Bodi to be exact. What a mess cricket is in at this moment. It’s a real quagmire. Even politics can take a backseat as Bodi takes over from sports enthusiasts as a whole, the title of “Bad Man of the Moment”; politicians, even their boss, can take a breather.

Who is this Bodi character? He’s Indian originally. He played for the Proteas, our national team of course, also the Dolphins, Titans and the Lions. He was brought up in a small Indian town in Oujarat province . Emigrating to South Africa he soon established himself early on as a talented cricketer, and soon himself adopted the nickname of “Boom Boom Bodi”.

He’s now been charged by the Cricket South Africa (CSA) under its anti-corruption code. The terms of the charge allege he contrived to fix or otherwise improperly influence aspects of the T20 tournament. He has been suspended from all cricket pending his response to the charges.

Bodi singled out. Bodi is alleged to have informed this Proteas player that the match-fixing organisation was targeting 2015 RamSlam games, and in his case the selected player would have to ensure his team scored less than nine runs in a nominated over.

If the approached player was able to lure another player into the spot-fixing plan, he as the agent, would receive a further R75 000 for his efforts. Depending on his response, Bodi could face criminal charges, which could be punishable by a prison sentence.

Observers are saying the outcome could be more serious than the Hansie Cronje scandal, Bodi at times having allegedly offered R800 000 a game to tailor performances to achieve a certain outcome.

Bodi himself was undoubtedly talented, with a highest score of 160 in first class matches and a bowling best of 61 wickets.

Meanwhile, with Super Rugby round the corner early games to watch out for are: Feb 26 Cheetahs v Argentina; to be followed on Feb 27 by Kings v Sharks, in PE.

Golf day to be held in aid of cricket tour REPORTER

THE Grey High School will be hosting a golf day on February 5 at the PE Golf Club as a fundraiser for their first cricket team’s tour to the UK. The tour will take place during June and July

Prizes will be given to the bestdressed 4-ball, theme: cricket. There will also be a celebrity cricket panel discussion at the prize-giving, which starts at 6:30pm.

The cost for a 4-ball is R2000 (R500 per player) and this includes an entry ticket to the Proteas vs England ODI on the February 6.

F1 2016 is taking shape AS the year winds up to the start of a new Formula 1 season there are still many issues to settle before it can get going proper.

Most of the teams will be putting the final touches on their respective cars ahead of their not too distant launch date and the crucial fist testing sessions.

However, some are still lining up a driver pairing which they hope will strike just the right balance in combination with their meticulously built machinery.

At the end of this month Pirelli will conduct a test at the Paul Ricard circuit. But don’t expect to see any 2016 pounding around the circuit as it will be a wet weather performance test for the Italian tyre manufacturer. It means that proper testing for the 2016 season has been pushed back three weeks from when it would normally have run. The testing is set to commence at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya on February 22.

A second test, still at Catalunya, is scheduled to run from March 1 to 4. It leaves the teams with only eight days of proper testing before the season starts in Australia.

Williams Martini Racing are happy with the early performance of their car for the 2016 Formula One season which is currently in development.

Williams’s head of vehicle performance Rob Smedley says that the target for the up-

coming season is to “get back to the front,” and that the Williams F1 team are definitely hitting targets.

“The 2016 car we have in the wind tunnel and the 2015 car are significantly different, so there’s nothing we could do from an aerodynamic point of view. Other parts of research and development and the mechanical design we are trialing all the time,” Smedley said.

“We think that everything we are seeing at the minute is good. We’re hitting targets. We are always looking, not just at numbers, but in other areas aerodynamic development as well, other significant areas.

“Of course, it’s all relative. Williams could have a stellar development and Ferrari and Red Bull could have an, even more, stellar one.

“But everything we are seeing at the minute is good; we are hitting targets. We are always looking not just at headline numbers but in other areas of aero development, other important areas.

Smedley described the 2015 season as “lacklustre” despite finishing third in the Constructors’ Championship and said constant development had been the reason for the stronger showing in 2014.

“The concept looks very different. We know the areas we have to improve and we have to give it a try. We need to try something,” said the team’s Brazilian driver Felipe Nasr, who scored three-times the number of points of team-mate Marcus Ericsson.”

Mercedes boss Toto Wolff confirmed that talks are being held with Manor F1 and a potential seat for Wehrlein.

“He definitely has the ability to be in Formula 1, to be one of the very successful ones, but it needs to be the right place for the right value,” Wolff told Autosport.

The first pre-season test starts on February 22 at the Circuit de Catalunya in Spain.

Venter signals River Mile warning PEARSON High School scholar, Ian Venter (16), has shown that he has the form to win next month’s historic SPAR River Mile, a title cherished by many a swimmer in SA. Over the past 92 years the River Mile has produced some legendary champions, a winners’ list which is like the who’s who of swimming in SA. It includes triple Springbok Kevin Richards, a 6 times winner of the Mile, Olympic Champion Ryk Neethling who, like Venter, was only 16 when he won the title, and SA Olympic swimmer and multiple Midmar Mile winner Chad Ho, a triple winner of the Mile.

Undefeated this season in the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series 1km Ocean Swim, Venter won Sunday’s EC Swim Challenge 5km swim in a SA qualifying time of 1hr 6min whilst also recording the fastest 3km time of the day. Sunday’s swim at Settlers dam attracted swimmers from around the Province and saw St Francis swimmer Amica de Jager winning the ladies’ 5km swim in a SA qualifying time of 1:07.

In the 3km swim, 2014 SPAR River Mile champion Daniel Jones won in a SA qualifying time of 40min 31sec from Jessica Canter and Dylan Smith.

During the 5km swim 3 swimmers record-

ed a 3km qualifying time (Venter, De Jager and Hannah Haswell) whilst in the 3km swim the first 26 swimmers all recorded their SA qualifying times.

The 1km swim was won by Emma Podesta with Toni Rafferty in second and Charlene Palmer in third place.

The aQuellé Ocean Racing Series returns on Sunday for Round 7 ahead of the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics’ 10km and 3km open water championships on Sunday, February 7, and the 5km open water championships on Sunday, February 14.

The SPAR River Mile takes place on Saturday and Sunday February 20 and 21 in what promises to be an action packed family weekend of sporting fun.

The 2016 SPAR River Mile Festival includes the Wimpy 5km Family Fun Run, the Oracle Media 10km and 30km MTB races, the Nutritech Maxi and Min Tri, the News Cafe Disabled Mile, the First Choice Family Half-Mile and the Hydrassist wetsuit double Mile, all taking place on the Saturday whilst the Wakaberry Kids across the river races and the Ladies and Men’s Mile events take place on the Sunday.

Footballer of the year strikes balance between sport, studies REPORTER MADIBAZ footballer of the year 2015, Cloudius Sagandira, is a rising sports star who has proved that it is possible to strike a balance between sporting and academic achievement.

The 24-year-old striker, who is this year in the final year of his master’s degree in chemistry, dreams of both a professional football career and completing his doctoral studies.

“From the age of seven I’ve had a passion for football and academics,” said Sagandira. “I was equally talented in both and couldn’t separate the two.”

The Zimbabwe-born forward was an integral part of the Madibaz’ successes last year, which included winning the Safa Nelson Mandela Bay regional league promotion championships and defending their Port Elizabeth Football Association league title.

His standout performances in these and the Varsity Football competition have already drawn the attention of several professional clubs.

But Sagandira, who completed his BSc honours degree with distinction is determined to remain focused on his academic studies and have the best of both worlds.

“The sky is not the limit; with great will, someone can go beyond it,” he said.

“No one should limit him or herself.

Never settle for anything, knowing that there is always something better ahead.”

An example to aspiring young talent, Sagandira said his greatest role model was his father, who taught him to believe in himself and inspired him to achieve both on and off the playing field.

“He is the one I look up to, as he believes in giving the best in everything you do.”

He said a sense of responsibility, good time management skills and a strong personal faith were key factors in his success.

Despite his achievements thus far, Sagandira remains humble and grateful for the opportunities he has had.

“Words cannot express how much this institution has changed and shaped my life. Going to study there was probably the best decision I have ever made. I am who I am because of NMMU.”

Curt Curt Alchin Alchin Memorial Memorial Race Race this this Saturday Saturday The Curt Alchin Memorial Race will take place on Saturday, January 23, at the Victory Raceway in Victoria Drive, Walmer. Curt Alchin was a multiple South African champion in oval racing and other facets, and passed away tragically on January 28, 2012, while competing in a V8 American Saloon race. Victory Raceway is honouring his legacy by hosting a memorial race in remembrance of this motorsport legend. Gates open at 3pm and racing starts at 6pm.

Entry is R50 for adults and R10 for children under 13. Track parking is R20 per vehicle.
