HOUSANDS of South African National Defence Force (SANDF) members including SANDF commander-in-chief President Jacob Zuma are expected to be in Nel-

son Mandela Bay for the fourth annual Armed Forces Week which takes place this month.

As part of Armed Forces Week, there will be various events leading up to Armed Forces Day which is celebrated on February 21.

This year, the events have been planned by the South African Navy and will provide a range of Navy platforms open to the public.

Armed Forces Week also commemorates the day of the country’s single largest naval disaster, the sinking of the troopship SS Mendi on February 21, 1917. The ship was

rammed by the SS Darro and 616 members of the SA Native Labour Corps died.

SANDF Spokesperson Brigadier General Xolani Mabanga, said Armed Forces Day is a day of honour.

Most folks are not deaf in the conventional sense.

ing in PE because it will be the first time that the SA navy will be showcasing their capabilities. The events were previously conducted inland but this is the first time it will be coastal.”

There will also be various activities where the SANDF will visit townships in the Bay and interact with the youth.

There will be seven warships and a submarine available for the public to view at the Port Elizabeth harbour on February 13 and 14.

There will also be fan parks at Kings Beach from February 17 to 21 where there will be a large display of military equipment.

The main parade held on February 21, will include a flypast by the SA Air Force and various elements of the SA Military Health Service taking part in the parade. There will be a three-day rehearsal leading up to the main parade where a military march will be held in Summerstrand.

event in the Bay because the navy is not as well-known in Port Elizabeth as it is in Cape Town. He added that the military exercise as part of Armed Forces Week, will be one of the most unforgettable experiences and it is all free of charge.

“This will be the biggest military demonstration the country has seen since the dawn of democracy.

“There will be the firing of the weapons from helicopters. On February 18, we will have a night firing exercise close to the Summerstrand pier.

“We will have warships and there will also be the fleet replenishment vessel SAS Drakensberg, which is currently the largest ship built for the SA Navy with a displacement of 12,500 tons and a length of 147 metres.”

He added that the venue and times for other Armed Forces Week events are still being finalised.

Piece of British Royal history found in Lorraine home REPORTER A PORT Elizabeth resident found a rare item in the cellar of his Lorraine home - a photo album that dates back to the royal visit to the city in 1947.

The album features many personal mementos and photographs of King George VI and the current reigning monarch, Queen Elizabeth II. Mario Luiters found the album by chance while spring cleaning his cellar. He has recently sent photos of the items to Sotheby’s in London and he is currently awaiting feedback from them on the value of it.

“I had bought a house from a lady a few years ago with a few outside storage rooms attached.

She asked me to throw away the contents but I decided to see if anything could be salvaged,” Luiters said.

“About a year after purchasing the house, I discovered a small crawlspace in one of the rooms with several antiques inside, including a seal ring from the 1930s, gold earrings and this very unusual album. I contacted the original owner to return the items, but she wasn’t interested in keeping them and gifted them to me.”

King George VI and Queen Elizabeth paid a visit to the city as part of a royal tour, along with the two princesses, Elizabeth (the current Queen of England) and Margaret in 1947. More than 26 000 residents of the Bay turned up at St

George’s Park to greet them. This was princess Elizabeth’s first official royal tour and she also celebrated her 21st birthday in Cape Town during the trip.

Luiters believes the album had been hidden in the cellar for more than 68 years and belonged to a photographer. There are close-up photographs of the then-princess Elizabeth and her parents on a safari, as well as photos taken during the tour in Port Elizabeth, Johannesburg, KwaZulu-Natal and ot-her stops. There are also signed invitations from various global newspapers.

“Whoever took these photos had official access to the royal family and carefully preserved the mementos. I would love to see it go to a museum or even the Queen herself to bring back beautiful memories,” Luiters said.

The album is made up of original photos, the original menu of the white train, the King and Queen’s suitcase tags and several historically significant signatures.

“I spoke to a gentleman who was in the military at that time who believes that he features in several of the photographs taken. It brought back many memories so I’m sure it’s very special to anyone with an interest in that era or the royal family,” he said.

The album is currently for sale on Gumtree.

Luiters said he has no idea of the actual value of the rare find but he will entertain reasonable offers.

Die stelsel is ook aan ’n opsporingstelsel gekoppel en operateurs in die inbelsentrum sal sien presies waar elke radio in die stad is.

“Met die opsporingstelsel sal die operateurs weet waar elke polisiebeampte is sodat die naaste beampte na ’n klagte uitgestuur kan word en die reaksietyd verkort kan word.”

Burger, van Sunridge, het in 1990 Die Burger se voorblad gehaal met sy Harley-ysterperd met ’n syspan wat hy eiehandig uit weggooi-onderdele gebou het. Tóé was dit die enigste lopende model van sy soort in die Baai.

Burger (84), een van die eerste drie dieseltegnici in Suid-Afrika, het egter verlede week ná ’n kort siekte gesterf.

Hy het in 1953 teen die Wallabies as OP-rugbyspeler uitgedraf en het ook provinsiale kleure in onder meer boks, judo, rolbal en stoei verwerf.

“Hy was al in sy sestigs toe neem hy nog deel aan padwedlope,” het sy seun Anton vertel.

“Ek onthou hoe my broer Gerhard saam met Pa ’n halfmarathon aangedurf en beweer het hý gaan Pa klop. Nee, wat, halfpad het Gerhard gehyg en Pa het hom baie gemaklik verbygesteek en gesê: ‘Kom, jong, ek het jou gesê kom hardloop hier langs my’.”

Vir sy seuns was Burger ’n boesemvriend en mentor. Vir die gemeenskap, sy vriende en kennisse was hy ’n sportman, terggees en die man vir wie jy vra om iets te doen as jy dit ordentlik gedoen wil hê.

“Só het almal maar vir Pa geken. Hy doen óf sy beste, óf hy doen dit glad nie. Ek dink dis hoekom hy sy hele lewe lank uitgeblink het in alles wat hy aangepak het,” het Anton vertel.

Hy laat sy drie seuns, Deon, Anton en Gerhard, agter.

Choir aims to bring hope to northern areas ROSLYN BAATJIES A NEW choir that is aimed at bringing hope to the gang-infested northern areas is about to be born; a tabernacle choir of between 120 and 240 members.

“The process of developing the concept for the Northern Areas Tabernacle Choir Project, as I recall, started way back in 2013 and has been highly rigorous and consultative ever since this gang-related violence has transpired within the northern areas.

“In July 2015 the Northern Area Tabernacle Choir (NATChoir) was established with the hope of eradicating all this negative publicity; the fear and death that ac- Claude Marks. company the drug and gang outbreaks,’’ said choir director Claude Marks.

“With this project I want people to know that even though we reside within these crime and poverty infested communities, there is still hope.

“The NATChoir will be this ray of hope.

Apart from the music it will operate as a social system that will speak to crime and poverty.

NATChoir in partnership with different role players will ensure that all the young people, women and children, can access the opportunities that will enable them to grow, develop and prosper as fully engaged, responsive and productive citizens.’’

The choir will be unique because it will consist of talented members between 16 and 35 years old, from around 19 neighbourhoods of the northern areas.

They will not be graduates of music schools, but are alumni of the school of life in the troubled PE northern areas, said Marks.

The choir management and other stakeholders would also ensure that members have access to opportunities so that they can grow and thus can develop into productive citizens who respond positively to challenges and opportunities.

High tea to raise funds for Malabar Home for Aged ROSLYN BAATJIES CLOSE to 50 years ago, she opened her own driving school; the first such school owned by a woman of colour in Port Elizabeth.

Today Cecile Kathan is back in the city after 41 years in Durban, to give back to the community she once served.

She will be doing this by hosting a High Tea on Saturday, February 6, at 2pm and donating the proceeds to the Malabar Home for the Aged.

“Forty senior citizens call it home of which 22 are frail residents. The cost per resident per month is R1596,’’ said Office Administrator Mario Lewis.

Kathan said she is supporting a number of charities of which the Home is one.

“They really need support, so the open day and the high tea are great opportunities for people to have a walk-through and see what is being done, as well as what the needs are.’’

Retired doctor Val Moodley and retired minister’s wife Anne Drake – both in their eighties – are the guest speakers at the event, which will take place at the Malabar Community Centre in Haworthia Drive.

Basotho, Xhosa heritage inspires local designs REPORTER ALTHOUGH Thabo Makhetha-Kwinana has spent most of her life in South Africa, she has never forgotten her roots in Lesotho, her place of birth.

The Nelson Mandela Bay clothing designer crafts contemporary fashion using traditional Basotho blankets – and one of her designs, titled “Starburst Coat”, is one of the 10 contenders in Design Indaba’s prestigious Most Beautiful Object in South Africa (MBOISA) 2016 exhibition.

She and another MBOISA finalist – knitwear designer Laduma Ngxokolo, whose works are inspired by traditional Xhosa culture – are both alumni of Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) in Port Elizabeth.

The travelling exhibition, which opened in Johannesburg on January 11, moved to Durban on Thabo Makhetha­ Kwinana.

Makhetha-Kwinana (28) said her use of Basotho blankets was a reminder of her heritage.

“It’s an interpretation of my culture in modern days. These traditional blankets are daily attire in Lesotho. When people move away to big cities, they leave their traditional culture behind. My work is a way of having the traditional keep up with the times.”

Her “Starburst Coat” consists of panels that come together at the back, resulting in the perceived “starburst”. It was one of several items

she sent to Elle Magazine last year for a fashion shoot – and it was Elle editor Emilie Gambade who nominated the piece.

“It is uniquely African; combines heritage, craft and beautiful proportions; it is timeless, colourful and says a lot about who we are and where we are from but at the same time it is exceptionally modern and very contemporary,” said Gambade.

Johannesburg-based Ngxokolo (29), a knitwear designer who completed his BTech in textile design in 2010, has won numerous awards here and abroad for his Maxhosa by Laduma fashion label.

His shawl was nominated for MBOISA 2016 by designer and curator Tracy Lee Lynch, who said: “When I started looking for the Most Beautiful Object in South Africa … for a piece that I found really spoke to me, I found this particular piece – the shawl.”

“I always design with an intention to make my products relative and relevant to the South African market as much as possible,” said Ngxokolo, who is completing his masters in Material Futures at London’s Central Saint Martins.

The pattern in the middle section of the 3m by 1m shawl was inspired by the textures of ripe “umnqusho”, a traditional Xhosa dish. Thus it is that while AB de Villiers’ Proteas took something of a hiding from Alastair Cook’s England tourists, going down in the all-important Test series 2-1 with one drawn, there are still, at the rear end of the tour, the matinee

Cook won’t be playing in this match but that changes nothing of what follows, while possibly at this very moment as the first of these 50-over ODIs is about to begin – the glinting coin at this moment deciding who will bat or bowl as it spins in the air at the Mangaung Oval in Bloemfontein.

Very much the team game is cricket. Where would you be without your “quick” as he tries to find a way to smash those precious stumps; or the batsman with his blade that’s aimed at outwitting the spinner’s guile, the opening bowler’s blazing pace? The bowler wants his wicket, the batsman a sweetly connecting four or better yet the ultimate prize of a soaring six.

The relative newcomer to Test cricket goes on: “I mean he can bat, he can bowl and he’s a first-class fielder to boot! You don’t get much better than that!” True what he says, but as much as Stokes is likely to be one of England’s trump cards in the one-day series, Morris himself, a few years older than Stokes at 28, could well turn out to be one of the South African kingpins of the five-match series.

And this more than anything is what Morris would like to be – South Africa’s No. 1 allrounder.

These next five ODIs could well provide the start for that climb to the top.

Meanwhile young Kagiso Radaba’s sudden leap towards the game’s top rung with his deadly display of pace and accuracy in the final Test in Centurion couldn’t have come at a better time.

Radaba claimed 13 wickets for 144 in the series’ final Test. This saw him record the second-best figures by a South African, just a fraction behind Makhaya Ntini’s 13-132 against the West Indies in 2005.

Just a 20-year-old Radaba, a former St Stithian’s lad, with 22 victims in the final three Tests. The secret of his success so far? “I’ve learnt that in Test cricket there’s very little room for error. I try to keep it as simple as possible.”

That’s good thinking for one so young. With players like these going head-to-head some really fine cricket is surely in prospect in the weeks to come.

Out with the old, in with the new TOO many times new F1 circuits are talked up and promised to be glorious showpieces that will electrify the racing. And then you end up with Valencia, a dull F1 street circuit somewhere in Spain that evokes more winces than grins.

But the new hosts of the European Grand Prix may have hit on something special. As the most recent addition to the F1 calendar Azerbaijan’s Baku City circuit promises much from the initial glimpses of its layout.

At six kilometres it’s second in length only to Spa-Francorchamps and with twenty corners behind Abu Dhabi’s 21 and Singapore’s 23.

But the most arresting feature of the circuit is slim width in certain areas of the track. It’s not pancake flat either, in fact it has signifi-

cant elevation changes and even a cobbled section.

Because it is a temporary circuit it isn’t required to subscribe to the FIA sporting code which stipulates a width of twelve meters, with an additional three meters on the starting grid. While the circuit has some areas which stretch to 13 metre width, its narrowest point, on Aziz Aliyev Street, is just 7.6 metres wide. The average speed of lap is currently projected at 210 kph and a top speed of 340 kph.

From an early perspective the Baku City circuit has many positives going for it; highspeed, tight sections, fast corners and for a street circuit, a longer than usual lap. Already it bears some similarities with China’s legendary Macau circuit.

While Baku is the ‘new’ that the title alludes to Pastor Maldonado is the one getting the boot. The driver who signed up to race alongside Jolyon Palmer for the returning Renault team appears to be out of a job. Instead, former McLaren driver Kevin Magnussen has inked a deal and will be announced as a Renault driver within the coming days.

It may look as if the rug has been pulled from underneath Maldonado’s feet but not quite. The Venezuelan’s time in Formula 1 has been littered with far too much inconsistency and far too few performances of real value and competence.

In his three seasons with Williams he registered an impressive victory at Spain in 2012 but solid and consistent performances were a rarity. The inconsistency and throng of crashes, some inexplicable, continued throughout his two subsequent seasons at Lotus and has marred the driver’s reputation.

Still he remained in F1 thanks to a lucrative sponsorship from Venezuela’s stateowned oil and gas company PDVSA. The sponsorship total, believed to be $46 million, is now no longer guaranteed as plunging oil prices and a volatile political landscape in Venezuela will stymie PDVSA’s involvement in F1.

For now, it doesn’t look like Maldonado will find a spot in F1 for 2016 but there are still two seats available at Manor. Should he be interested in a seat at this team and should he be able to bring along the bulging sponsorship purse the team would likely be interested. Chances are though that Pastor Maldonado may have bid F1 an abrupt farewell.

Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge for SA’s bravest BRAVE; possessing or exhibiting courage or courageous endurance – this is the adjective which best describes the open water swimmers who tackle the annual Jendamark Nelson Mandela Bay Bellbuoy Challenge.

This internationally acclaimed 5km sea swim is hailed as the toughest Indian Ocean Swim in the world and despite its short existence of just 6 years, the race already has some world famous swimming names on the winners listing.

Leading local export company Jendamark Automation have been the naming sponsor of the event for the past two seasons and recently agreed a 5-year sponsorship for the event with record prize money up for grabs this season as cash prizes are not the same for both the swimsuit and the wetsuit categories. Hydration for the swimmers will be provided by 32GI. Part of the history of the race are 6 swimmers who have completed all 6 Bellbuoy swims to date. This group of local swimmers has Mary-Anne Stott as the only female, disabled swimmer Stanford Slabbert and includes Richden Jute, Andre Kleynhans, Ralph West and Jeffrey’s Bay swim coach Brenton Williams. Currently Stott’s mother, Maria, holds the record for the oldest female to complete the swim at 59 years and 9 months whilst Rob Connacher is the oldest male to finish the

swim when in 2014 he was 80 years and 3 days. The youngest girl was Christie Vaughan (14 years and 28 days) whilst the youngest boy was Ian Venter (14 years and 334 days).

The minimum age for the swim is 14 years on race day.

Around 100 swimmers from around the country are anticipated to tackle the challenge on Saturday, February 27, at Pollok Beach with the swim starting at 8.30am. The event is owned and managed by local nonprofit sports events company, Zsports Events NPC. NMB swim champs This Sunday sees the Nelson Mandela Bay Aquatics (NMBA) 10km and 3km swim championship events taking place at Settlers Dam just outside Grahamstown as part of the EC Swim Challenge Series – Round 4.

So far this season only Rebecca Newman has contested the 10km swim whilst the title race for the 3km race is anticipated to be a tight one between Ian Venter and Daniel Jones.

Swimmers from around the Province will be expected to attend the Series on Sunday as it offers the only sanctioned event in the Eastern Cape where registered swimmers can obtain their Swimming South Africa open water qualifying times.
