RATS AS BIG AS CATS TERRORISE RESIDENTS

Playground plans for dump site CARALEE SCHEUN

M

ANY rats - which some believe are bigger than cats - will soon be driven out of the Kensington area with the construction of a playground.

According to residents, the empty plot on the corner of Mary Boyd and Byron Road, which has become an illegal dumping site since last year, is the reason for the rat infestion in the neighbourhood. “I cannot sleep in my house, because there are rats that are bigger than cats,” Estelle Schovell said earlier. The PE Express’s inquiries from the municipality about the situation and the maintenance of the area, has led a task force of the Department of Waste Management to investigate the problem. Although Morné Wagner, a resident, claimed that the municipality has done nothing to remove the rubble, Mthubanzi Mniki, a municipal spokesperson, said a plan had been put in place to keep those people that dump illegally away for good. According to Mniki, the “problem area” in Kensington gets cleared by municipal workers every two weeks. “But I’ve seen the photographs taken by the workers. It seems a week after clearing it is almost worse than before cleaning. Rubbish is dumped here just too quickly,” Mniki said. To counter illegal dumping, Mniki believes the municipality will turn the plot into a playground for children. “To convert the site into something useful is the best way to prevent an illegal dumping ground.” Wagner also believes the construction of a playground will keep the rubbish - and the rats - away for good. “There are lots of small children who come into the street who will certainly enjoy the playground. I just hope the park will be well maintained, because once the grass grows long, it will again attract litterbugs and vermin,” Wagner said. Mniki could not provide a time frame for the construction of the playground.

Science catchup for Northern areas schools

Tinus Sonnekus, a lecturer in Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s STEM in Action programme, helps Grade 10 learners with their electricity experiment. PHOTO:SUPPLIED

FOR the next few weeks – for as long as it takes – NMMU will be providing extra practical science sessions for Grade 10 to 12 learners from Northern areas schools to help learners make up for lost time. “They can experience practically what’s going to be taught, so that teachers can then spend a shorter time teaching it. The teachers need to maximise their time. They are under such a lot of pressure.” This, according to Isabel van Gend, Programme Manager for NMMU’s STEM (Science, Technology, Engineering and Maths) in Action programme, which runs in more than 40 high schools throughout Nelson Mandela Bay, including six Northern areas schools, namely Bertram, David Livingstone, Chapman High, St James, Gelvandale and Nasrudin Islamic high schools. Northern areas schools opened last week after an almost month-long shutdown, sparked by last year’s poor provincial and citywide matric results, and alleged mismanagement by the provin-

I got my first born at 14 years and got married twice with no kids, so I had to give up both marriages. I spent 21 years looking for another child, desperate to fall pregnant again, but all was in vain. I visited many doctors both medical and traditional but there was no sign - a lot of money was wasted & I nearly lost hope till I met Healer Diba in newspaper... He promised to make ends meet for me, he actually killed 3 birds with one stone. I am 40 years now, married again with twins. Thanks dr Diba for the help I received plus boosting our private business. NB: Healer Diba also solves court cases, relationship problems, divorce issues, lucky spells etc.

cial Department of Education. Many schools have extended their school hours and suspended sport, to enable their pupils to catch up. STEM in Action’s practical sessions take place during pre-booked morning slots from Monday to Thursday at NMMU’s Missionvale Campus, and complement the theory being taught in the classroom, but they have introduced additional Friday morning and afternoon sessions – which also kicked off last week – specifically to accommodate the Northern areas schools. “We are prepared to fit them in, to help them out. These sessions will run until the schools feel they’ve caught up, and then they will fit back into the normal Monday to Thursday sessions.” STEM in Action offers physical science experiments to the entire physical science class, including their teacher. “Each learner is involved in actually doing the science experiments. For many [in our programme], it is the first time they are doing a practical or even entering a lab,” Van Gend said. STEM in Action also runs a parallel Get Ahead in Technology and Engineering (GATE) programme for learners who show the most potential. Northern Areas learners already in this programme have been attending these classes from the start of the school year. “Although their schools were closed, we contacted them on their cell phones and encouraged them to come.” Van Gend added that the programme included an “English in Science” component, where learners whose mother tongue is not English, can gain a greater understanding of the language used in science. The purpose of STEM in Action, which is sponsored by the South African National Road Agency Limited (Sanral), is to promote careers in science and engineering. – REPORTER

International architects, NMMU students plan metro development ODETTE KEMP A SERIES of international workshops that allowed Bay students to bring their own ideas for developing the metro to the table, was held at the Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) this month. Architectural experts from as far away as Europe and South America visited the Bay for three weeks, where they helped groups of NMMU architecture students to sharpen their skills in this profession. The teachers for the workshops included Carin Smuts, an architect based in Cape Town, Prof. Stephen Read from TU Delft university in the Netherlands, Prof. Armando dal Fabbro from the University IUAV of Venice in Italy, and Prof. Matías Imbern from the University of Rosario in Argentina. Under their keen leadership, students built three-dimensional models of the Baakens Valley, with their own ideas for the development

of the region added to the design. Students were very enthusiastic to take part in this project, said Dal Fabbro. “They were very interactive,” he said. “The project was as important and enriching to us as it was to them.” Smuts said the students were encouraged to make their own presentations and decisions during the workshops. “They even took turns teaching. By doing this, they are empowered to become better architects after graduating, because they learn that there is not one particular right way to do their work.” This approach was also a boost to the students’ confidence. “Within three weeks we had firsthand knowledge of the entire development process,” said Sarah Weiss, a first-year architecture student. ) The student projects, which were completed last week, will be submitted to the Mandela Bay development agency (MBDA), to consider alongside their existing plans of developing the Baakens Valley.

Bay bids farewell to legendary Mo ALVENÉ APPOLLIS A MEMORIAL service will be held tomorrow, Thursday February 25, at 3pm at the Boardwalk Convention Centre for Maureen “Mo” Dalzell, a legend in the PR and communications industry.

Maureen Dalzell (71) who passed away last week. PHOTO: FACEBOOK

Dalzell (71), a perfectionist on stilettos, as she was affectionately known, passed away last week Thursday. Dalzell was involved in a car accident on her way to Grahamstown on February 7. She was admitted to hospital but was discharged shortly afterwards. According to Ed Richardson of Siyathetha Communications, who worked with Dalzell for over a decade, it was only later discovered that

her neck was fractured in seven places. Dalzell was scheduled to have surgery last Thursday but she died in her sleep at the Life St George’s Hospital in the early hours of that morning. Dalzell had worked for more than 40 years as a communications officer at Sun International before she joined Siyathetha. Graham Vass, a former colleague and manager of the Boardwalk, described Dalzell as the “sweetest chocolate in the box.” “Mo lived her life to be helpful, kind and of service to others. She raised millions for those less fortunate yet resisted offers of assistance from me and others, even in her times of need as she ‘did not want to bother us.’ “She is now with Ronnie, her late husband. May her soul rest in peace.”

Health science students work on Phelophepa train

REPORTER THE Phelophepa Health Train – known as the world’s biggest mobile clinic – has been a beacon of hope to millions of South Africans in need of medical assistance, since its induction in 1994. This year, more than 50 Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University Health Science students will work aboard the health care train, alongside trained professionals to bring primary health care to 72 communities throughout South Africa. The university has been part of the “miracle train” initiative since 2008. The first 18 nursing students from NMMU have just returned to the classroom after spending two weeks in Limpopo, delivering health care to hundreds of underprivileged people in the area as part of the Transnet Foundation initiative. These students will be followed by additional fourth-year NMMU pharmacy and psychology students at different points of the Phelophepa’s journey throughout the year.

Health Transnet Foundation’s senior manager Shamona Kandia said NMMU has been a pioneer through its Trust and Community Development Unit and has always supported the project. “The Phelophepa complements those services and aims to assist communities which cannot afford health care and often experience barriers to access public health services.” Kandia explained. Phelophepa, which means “good, clean health” in Tswana and Sotho, is more than a mobile hospital and contains over 40 permanent staff and numerous volunteers. It provides outreach and educational programmes and has reached over 23,5 million people thus far. About 50 pharmacy, dental, nursing, psychology and optometry students from various universities live and work in cabins on the trains for two-week rotation periods. Hospitality students also assist with meal preparation. This year, the Phelophepa will visit the Eastern Cape from 13 June to 12 August and will be in Alice, Dimbaza, King William’s Town, Queenstown, Burgersdorp, Swartkops and Willowmore.

Ebike a first for SA university REPORTER NELSON Mandela Metropolitan University students and staff can remove the long walk between the university’s North and South campuses, by hopping onto a solar-charged e-bike. A total of ten e-bikes, all part of a shared fleet, have just been launched on February 16 as part of this unique green transport pilot project. “This project is a first for a South African university,” said Greg Ducie Projects Director for NMMU Infrastructure. The shared e-bikes can be collected and dropped off at custom-designed docking stations on the two campuses. The e-bike project has been funded mutually by NMMU, uYilo and the Advanced Mechatronics Technology Centre which houses NMMU’s merSETA chair in Engineering Development. “Each station has rooftop solar panels that provide the green energy needed to power this green transport solution,” said Hiten Parmar Deputy Director for uYilo. “Society needs to embrace the concept of shared mobility as a service to get from Point A to Point B rather than the ‘ownership’ way of thinking. Parmar said the e-bikes are a great way to showcase the fleet sharing system and they also provide “exciting opportunities for further research on a real life application and working model.” The swipe of a student or staff access card will be all that is required to check the bikes out of their stations, although those wanting to use them will have to complete a once-off

online registration, and collect keys and a helmet from nearby security points. Car sharing, a step-up from bike sharing, is a vision towards which uYilo is working. It is happening in major cities like London, Paris and Oslo and was last year introduced to South Africa by Locomute.

“In addition to harvesting renewable energy for green mobility, mobility-sharing reduces the number of cars on the road which has an improved effect on the quality of our air. We will monitor the success of the pilot, before looking at expanding such projects nationally,” said Parmar.

APPLY TODAY – SEE YOUR FUTURE TOMORROW! Boston Higher Education Registration Still Open A career in business today requires a different set of skills, compared to a decade ago. Whilst there will always be a place for traditional qualifications, the South African business landscape is looking for individuals with strong leadership capabilities that can move comfortably and competently between all areas of finance, marketing and management within an organisation. “Education is not static and though there are other BCom degrees on offer, our research showed that there was a gap for a qualification that covers all these skills,” says Dr. Hendrik Botha, Academic Head at Boston City Campus & Business College. “The Boston BCom Management Marketing qualification is a bachelor's degree that specifically equips students with the knowledge and skills for career opportunities in the fields of business, management and marketing.” “The programme content – coupled with the flexibility it offers individuals – has made this degree an increasingly popular choice with students: regardless of whether the economy is experiencing growth or not, qualified entrepreneurs, marketers and managers are always needed. With both the global and local economy still in the midst of one of its most challenging periods, this is probably even more relevant,” says Botha. The BCom Management Marketing degree has been created to produce the kind of managers and entrepreneurs South Africa needs, to take the country forward, exploring new opportunities and avenues of doing business. Ironically, a consequence of these tough and changing economic times is that prospective students – both

undergraduate and postgraduate – are seeking out alternative means to complete their qualifications aside from following the traditional full-time university route.

services. All students select a support centre and are encouraged to make use of the facilities for the duration of their degree studies, daily” explains Botha.

Whether they need to work while studying in order to fund their education, or because they simply are too far away from a suitable university, or because they already are in a career, but want to further or change their skills set or acquire a formal qualification – there are students who need the flexibility of studying part time with the benefits of accessing a local support centre.

Furthermore the College's system of pacing studies, combined with a variety of assessments, has seen tertiary and degree students working continuously and doing very well. Boston City Campus & Business College also conducts courtesy calls to students to check on how they are managing in their studies. Its faculty regularly sets telephonic appointments and deal with online queries about course content.

Boston City Campus & Business College offers their degree with flexible study modes. A lack of support and guidance, so often associated with part-time study, desperately needs to be remedied to successfully complete a degree. Boston provides students with the best of all worlds – distance learning, whether part-time or full time, with open access to critical support and help. Thousands of sudents currently make use of this at more than 40 support centres, nationwide. Many students who eagerly take on distance education, thinking they would be able to balance their study, work and home commitments comfortably, may find that it's not as easy as planned. They soon discover that course material is generally of a high standard and that they positively require some form of interaction with educators/tutors in order to achieve the successful outcome they require. “At Boston this is achieved through an education platform, enriched by digital video and online interactivity – all supported by a countrywide network of support centres. These support centres provide access to computers, online assessments, technology-based training material, digital library facilities, examination venues and administrative

Bay designer takes Japan REPORTER A PORT Elizabeth jewellery designer recently soaked up the atmosphere of Japan in icy weather while showcasing her range at Japan’s largest international jewellery trade show. Jenni Gault, along with her Brand Manager Ashleigh Parkin, were honoured to be surrounded by international designers, economists and manufacturers at the prestigious opening ceremony dinner and while Gault took pleasure in enjoying a glass of wine with René Everson-Varney, Counsellor Political at the SA embassy in Tokyo, she was also honoured to have a personal meeting with Manley Barnard, Head of the Economic Section. “It was excellent to note that whilst we are bound to face some challenging times in the jewellery industry both locally and internationally, international designers, manufacturers and retailers are optimistic for the season of 2016 and 2017,” Gault said. “Manley Barnard went into detail about the opportunities available for South African companies to trade in

the Japanese market, resulting in some very exciting potential collaborations between myself and our Japanese team.” International Jewellery Tokyo drew to a highly successful close with 1 089 exhibitors participating from 31 countries and 27 311 quality buyers throughout Japan and the Asia Pacific region. Two-thirds of the exhibitors were Japanese, while the remaining one-third were international exhibitors. Gault is however fond of sight-seeing and had the pleasure of photographing many Geisha ladies, dressed in full traditional Japanese Komo’s. “Tokyo is a beautiful, vibrant city, but in contrast to many of the other major capitals it is incredibly quiet and clean,” she explained. “We were lucky enough to enjoy clear skies and a striking view of Mount Fuji from the Metro on the way to the show every morning.” She said they were also treated to Cosmopolitan foods, some rather interesting and surprising, but most were incredibly delicious. “Japan is famous for its large variety of incredibly tasty rice cake and its

very delicate sweets and confectionery work,” she added. The ladies took the opportunity to explore the city through prolonging their stay by an extra two days and visited the busiest walking intersection in Tokyo - Shibuya - through which as many as 2500 people cross at a single crossing time. This was followed by some well needed winter clothes for the icy Japan air. “We completed our first day in Japan with 30 minutes of true Japaneses Karaoke, an amazing experience proving that Ashleigh and I should not give up our day jobs,” Gault said. Day two started with a view up the Tokyo Tower and after souvenir shopping they were humbled by The Senso-ji Temple, the oldest temple in Tokyo. “We are truly left feeling like we had experienced the true beauty of Tokyo,” she said. Helicopter adds twist to golf day SASHIKA PILLAY HUNDREDS of golf balls will be launched from a helicopter that will swoop over a designated spot at the Humewood Golf Club as part of Linkside Pre-Primary School’s annual Air Africa Golf Day, which takes place on March 4. As part of the day’s events, the event organisers have arranged a helicopter hole-in-one. PTA Chairperson, Candice Barber, who came up with the idea of adding a helicopter hole-in-one to their event, said the golf ball drop will be something different for Port Elizabeth. “We wanted to deliver the ‘wow’ factor to those who were kindly supporting us, and I came across the idea after scrolling through different websites.” “Numbered golf balls will be purchased from the school and released from a helicopter hovering over a designated location at the

The first golf ball in the hole or closest to the hole wins.” The prize of the helicopter holein-one is a two-night stay at Oceana Beach and Wildlife Reserve worth R20 000 plus R1 000 in cash. Barber added that they expect the helicopter to arrive at the Humewood Golf Club just after 5pm. “We believe that this event is a first for the Eastern Cape, if not the first of its kind to take place in SA,” Barber said. The money raised at the annual golf day event will go directly towards the school. The day features a four-ball start over 18 holes at a cost of R300 per player, which includes green fees, light refreshments and prizes. After its first stop in Cape Town, the show ventures to The Boardwalk where the talented, daring and slightly insane performers will dazzle local audiences with unbelievable feats from 26 February to 6 March. AUSSIE: The Australian Circus Spectacular is a modern and exclusively human, feelgood circus spectacular that blends stunning cirque style acrobatics, hilarious vaudevillian antics and extreme, high octane stunts. Highlights of the show include one of the world’s few surviving human cannonball acts performed by an expert stuntman Luiz Daza. Audiences will also marvel at the dizzying Globe of Death act which features up to five motorbike riders circling a daring dancer with Mad Max style bravado before the sphere splits in half, with thrilling freestyle motor cross stunts during which riders reach gut-wrenching heights. Between these breathtaking and death-defying stunts, a troupe of talented and equally daring AUSSIES will perform amazing feats of human endurance, skill and strength. From the Queen of the Silks, Kiarnna; vaudevillian performer and slapstick comedian, Val De Fun, the illusion of the salsadancing quick-change act, to the duo pole performance by Edison and Giselle, audiences will be mesmerized from start to finish. Tickets are on sale at Computicket. Tickets for the show at The Boardwalk’s Festival Lawns range in price from R200 for adults, and from R150 for children under 14.

Outdoor movie night for charity REPORTER THERE is something special about laying out picnic blankets and enjoying a movie under the stars with family and friends. This is what can be expected at the outdoor cinema, called the Pierre Kitching Attorneys/Aurora Pop-Up cinema event taking place on February 26 at Londt Sports Club. Algoa FM’s Briony Sparg, who also works at Aurora Special Care Centre, said she wanted a unique fundraising event. “I wanted something different, a unique idea. I started researching online for fundraising ideas and chose to have an outdoor movie night.”

“We have been very fortunate that Pierre Kitching Attorneys have hopped on board with this event and they are the official naming sponsors,” she said. All proceeds will go to Aurora Special Care Centre to help children and adults with mental and physical challenges. Sparg added that she is hoping to raise about R25 000 for the charity but the event is weather dependent. “I hope the weather is good because the event is outdoors. This is more of a movie night with a family environment.” ET the Extra-Terrestrial which is an American science fiction family film, will be the movie of the night and it starts at 7:30pm. Gates open at

6pm. “We chose the movie ET because it’s something kid-friendly and it’s a classic,” Sparg said. Refreshments such as popcorn, slush puppies and candy floss will be on sale. ZSPORTS WORLD: MICHAEL ZOETMULDER

River Mile Champion lines up Jendamark Bellbuoy challenge AFTER two below par performances at the NMBA open water swimming championships earlier in the month, 18-year-old defending Jendamark Bellbuoy swimsuit Champion, Daniel Jones, is peaking at the right time. Having defended both his Double Mile and SPAR River Mile titles over the weekend, Jones couldn’t have asked to be in a better position ahead of this Saturday’s epic swim which carries one of the highest open water prize purses in the Province. “That was very, very tough with the last 50m just a flat-out shoulder to shoulder sprint,” said Jones after his nail biting title defence at Sunday’s 92nd SPAR River Mile where he managed to beat pre-race favourite Ian Venter in the run up through the finish tower. Being a top surf lifesaver with the Summerstrand Surf Lifesaving Club, Jones’s advantage is his skill in running out of the water at the end of open water swimming events and this will be tested again this Saturday when the Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge takes place at Pollok Beach. Billed as the toughest 5km Indian Ocean event on the planet, the 5km ocean sea is a daunting swim which sees swimmers going 2.5km straight out to sea to round the nautical bellbuoy directly off Pollok Beach. With final race entries for the event closing today, around 100 of South Africa’s bravest open water swimmers will be lining up in two categories: the traditional English channel rules swimsuit category and the wetsuit category, for equal prize money across both categories for the first time in the history of the event. Title sponsors of the event, Jendamark

Automation, recently agreed on a 5-year sponsorship of the event which includes a cash prize pool of R37 000 split equally across the two disciplines. For the top swimmers it’s always a gamble which category to go with and whilst water temperatures and ocean conditions usually dictate the final decision, the increase of the prize money certainly adds another huge factor to the decision. Defending wetsuit champion Ian Venter’s disappointment at having been beaten by Jones in both the double and single mile events last weekend will definitely be in the forefront of his decision, which category to enter on Saturday. Wayne Jones, older brother to Daniel, will also fancy his chances in the wetsuit category having finished just behind Daniel in the double Mile on Saturday. Defending ladies’ swimsuit champion Hannah Haswell will be keen to secure the R4 000 first prize after her strong double mile victory on Saturday but will be very wary of in-form Woodridge College scholar Amica de Jager who was placed second in the SPAR Ladies’ Mile behind Jessica Canter on Sunday. The big question is whether Haswell goes for the wetsuit category to avoid a show down with de Jager who is sure to enter into the swimsuit category. The Jendamark Bellbuoy Challenge offers a fantastic spectacle from the shores of Pollok Beach where spectators can watch the entire race unfold in front of them. Race start is at 8.30am with the winners expected to take just under one hour. Race briefing for all participants takes place at 6pm on Friday evening at News Cafe, Boardwalk. See www.bellbuoychallenge.co.za.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Suzuki’s Ciaz brings new choices in sedan market REPORTER IN continuation of Suzuki’s rapid expansion in model range in recent times, the manufacturer launched the Ciaz last year – a compact fourdoor sedan with a classy look, lots of room and features and affordability to boot, with models ranging between R193 900 and R230 900. In a nutshell, an affordable, good-looking family car, offering a lot of space and high- spec comfort features, a good ride and fuel economy giving potentential customers another option in the sedan market to put to the test. With the Ciaz, Suzuki can now offer a competitor in the compact sedan market segment against cars such as the VW Polo sedan (retailing between R196 800 and R257 100) and the Toyota Corolla Quest (retailing from R190 700). The new Suzuki Ciaz range consists of three models, representing a choice of two specification levels (GL and GLX), and two transmissions. All three models have the same 1,4-litre K14B engine. For this week’s Express on Wheels, the Suzuki Ciaz GLX -the higher-spec version of the two manual transmission models- was testdriven. A GLX with automatic transmission is also available in the range. Exterior Its sleek, elegant design impressed me immediately at first glance. Its expensive, elegant look attracted many admiring glances and questions about this sedan with the S emblem on the dominating front grille. The extended wheelbase and wide stance in the front and back not only create the impressive roomy interior, but also contribute to a stable ride. The interior Despite its being described as a compact se-

dan there is nothing compact about the space it offers on the inside. It has more than enough room to seat five adults in comfort, as well as a more than adequate boot with a capacity of 495 litres. I found the interior to be a little less impressive - as far as looks go - than the outside, but this is to be expected as it is, despite its leather seats (in the GLX models), not competing in the premium car market. There are cup and bottle holders as well as storage compartments aplenty. A fold-down armrest offers two cup holders for rear seat passengers. Additional stowage spaces include a lidded compartment at the bottom of the centre stack that is also home to a 12V power socket, and both the USB and the analogue auxiliary inputs. A storage box is located under the front centre armrest. Equipment levels are where the Ciaz stands out among its competitors. Even on the base GL specification one finds luxury features such as electric windows and exterior mirrors, remote central locking, automatic climate-control air-conditioning with front and rear vents, and a six-speaker sound system with FM/AM tuner, CD player, Bluetooth connectivity and both USB and stereo analogue jacks. The tilt-adjustable multifunction steering wheel offers integrated switchgear for the audio system and hands-free telephony. Safety and security features include dual front airbags, inertia reel seatbelts with pretensioners and load limiters, side-impact door beams, ABS brakes with EBD and EBA, an alarm/immobiliser, and child-proof locks. The Suzuki Ciaz 1.4 GLX Manual is mechanically identical to the GL versions, and also offers all the standard features outlined above. Extra features include, among others, genuine leather upholstery and 16-inch alloy wheels.

The Suzuki Ciaz has an expensive, elegant look accentuated by the S emblem on the dominating front grille. PHOTO: SUPPLIED The GLX also has keyless entry with a start button. The automatic (four-speed) version of the Suzuki Ciaz GLX is identical to the manual. Engine All the models are powered by a 1.4 litre engine that is much more powerful than one would expect. Getting used to where the clutch takes and concentrating on that for a smooth ride, took some effort initially, but you soon alter your driving style to accommodate this. Out on the open road the engine really comes into its own and it’s difficult to believe it is not powered by a turbo or 1.6 or bigger engine.

Overtaking can be done with confidence and peace of mind. The steering and suspension are good, offering a pleasant ride during which uneven roads are handled with composure. The combined cycle fuel consumption is given as between 5,4 and 5,5 litres/100 km, depending on model. Pricing Prices include a three-year/100 000 km warranty, and a three-year/60 000 km service plan. Services are at 15 000km intervals. 1,4 GL – R193 900 1,4 GLX – R214 900 1,4 GLX automatic – R230 900

Here are just a few of them as the younger spectators played havoc with the alphabet. Perhaps the best of them all was: “AB D(everstating)” and no wonder, suddenly the statistics were being turned upside down. After just 10 overs had been bowled the score was 134 with only De Villiers back in the pavilion, having practically given his wicket away with a mighty slog that didn’t quite reach the boundary that time. No wonder they call it “The Bullring”. England were very definitely the bulls and they were being teased to death – by a Proteas team that last time round only just managed to get there on the final

ball of the game. One cheeky little fellow’s placard read: “Don’t worry, Mom – I’ll study later!” Now suddenly the match equation was turned on its head. When De Villiers departed with his 71 coming off just 29 balls, the South Africans needed only 45 to win off 66 balls. Looking ahead, the selectors have an interesting little problem on their hands. What do they do with specialist wicketkeeper and high-scoring left-handed batsman, Quinton de Kock? Specially after AB de Villiers declared at his post match interview: “I’ll keep on opening the innings for as long as they want me to.”

Whatever the selectors decide upon come the ICC World T20 Championship – just around the corner now – De Kock must be behind the stumps. If AB, the captain after all, wants to continue opening the batting for the South Africans, well and good. De Kock can bat lower down and in fact might well benefit from not having too much responsibility on his hands. One thing seems to be certain, the Proteas – after being made to look like rank amateurs in the Test series against England – are now back on their feet and looking like a team that has the ability to go all the way. Go, Proteas! Go!

WHAT more is there to say? After managing on the last ball of the first T20 game at Newlands to scrape home by the skin of their teeth against England, the Proteas cruised along, as though it’s no more than a practice exercise to win the second encounter at the Wanderers last weekend by a staggering nine wickets! Which means they won the two-match series 2-0. As they say in the classics: “Will wonders never cease?” The performances in both matches were simply amazing. For quite some time it looked as though AB de Villiers (71) and his opening batsman partner, Hashim Amla (69 not out), were intent on winning the match on their own. This was South African T20 cricket at its very best. Certainly, the kids on the popular side seemed to think so. The posters they thought up and held up with utter glee were hilarious. As De Villiers raced to the fastest 50 by a South African in a T20 match – his 71 coming just off just 29 deliveries – the home-made posters came up one after another.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

The truth about Michael Schumacher IT has been more than two years since Michael Schumacher sustained severe brain injuries following a skiing accident in the French Alps. The seven times world champion spent several months in an induced coma in Grenoble hospital before being moved to a hospital in Lausanne. In September 2014 he was finally moved to his Switzerland home where he receives round the clock medical attention. Since then, by the family’s request, little information has been shared about Schumacher’s condition. While some close friends, such as former Ferrari colleagues Jean Todt and Ross Brawn, have visited Schumacher no definitive report has been released on his recovery or condition. Instead, Todt and Brawn have made the occasional statement that he “is still fighting.” Sabine Kehm, the official spokesperson for the Schumacher family, has repeatedly warned that only official statements, from her, be ac-

cepted. Recently, she’s quashed rumours that the former champion is able to walk as “irresponsible and offering false hope.” It’s safe to assume, from the way that she intervened to dismiss these rumours that Schumacher is likely to be in the same condition and making, at best, slow progress. It’s a question that most people ask when the subject is Formula 1 – how is Michael Schumacher? The truth is that only a few people know the answer to this question and they aren’t sharing it. Some feel entitled to news on his condition and it’s not unreasonable that they do. An argument could be made for releasing sporadic statements. Perhaps even one a year could put an end to any speculation on Schumacher’s condition. However, not even this is likely to satisfy some circles of the media. The inevitable course of events that would ensue is the likely reason for the family remaining silent. In a society where respect and ethics are rare

commodities it will undoubtedly prompt tabloids to analyse every word, hire so-called experts to comment and ultimately prompt more speculation. Most recently, a statement by former Ferrari president Luca di Montezemolo has prompted a fresh batch of speculation. Montezemolo was quoted as saying that he has “no good news” about Michael Schumacher. “I have news of him continuously and it is not good,” he said. It is puzzling why the former Ferrari boss would make such a statement which has given rise to new-found conjecture. He surely knows the family’s position on sharing information. Most of the interest in Schumacher’s condition is born from a place of genuine concern and not morbidity. But the best that Michael’s legions of fans can do is to respect the family’s wishes for privacy. And accept that if there was anything to share that they would do so. Until then, keep fighting Michael.

National cricket honour for NMMU’s Riaan Osman A PE sports administrator who has always striven to serve his country as team manager, can finally tick off that life goal from his bucket list. Riaan Osman, deputy director of Madibaz Sport has been appointed manager of the SA U19 cricket team that competed in Bangladesh recently. “I was humbled by Cricket South Africa’s faith in me,” said Osman. “This was the first time that I’d worked with a team at this level and I wanted to ensure that their only focus was on the field of play. My job was to ensure that the rest was in place.” Osman said the team were very disappoint-

ed, regarding the fact that SA were knocked out early after a shock two-wicket loss to Namibia. Before, he had worked with international teams such as Pakistan, Sri Lanka, Ireland and IPL giants Mumbai Indians. Osman’s success has stemmed from building a set of skills and then building more. “Studying a sport qualification is not enough. You need to network during your studies and be prepared to accept job opportunities without any remuneration. “At the same time, only settling to play cricket without studying or developing a trade is not ideal,” he said. – REPORTER
