Snake scare in suburbs SASHIKA PILLAY

T

HE recent rainfall and high humidity levels as well as prolonged hot days, have resulted in an increase in snake activity in Port Elizabeth suburbs over the past few weeks. This according to Sandula Conservation’s owner and snake expert, Mark Marshall,

who had caught 13 puff adders as well as other venomous snakes during the past weekend. “There are a lot more snakes around because of the extremely hot weather we have been having. There has also been an increase in puff adder activities.” “The puff adders look for cooler places during the day but like to keep warm during the night. They prefer tar roads at night where they remain on the road absorbing the heat

from it,” Marshall said. “The high temperatures and then the cold front and rain resulted in an increase of frog activity and this resulted in an increase of puff adders. Puff adders also like the humidity at times,” he said. Marshall said the suburbs where he noticed a high increase in snake activities are Summerstrand, Westering, Theescombe and Malabar. “We get about six or seven calls a day,

sometimes more. Once we catch the snake, we take it to a protected nature reserve close to the area we found it,” he said. Marshall advised against trying to kill or catch a snake. “Stay calm, don’t try to kill the snake; so many people get bitten by the snake when they try to kill it. Call an expert. It will take us about 15 to 20 minutes to get to the house.” Continued on page 2

Feast on edible garden at Boardwalk this Easter The Boardwalk’s culinary team has some thing “eggstra” special up their sleeves to mark Easter. The team headed up by Executive Chef Paul Bain, will be creating a spectacular edible Easter garden, which will be on display at The Boardwalk Hotel from Friday, March 25. Spanning 1.5m², the edible garden promises to be every child’s fantasy, burgeoning with green grass, colourful flowers and plants; frolicking mice and bunnies; fishermen gnomes and a running stream. These will all be handmade from scratch by a team of four people who will spend about ten days preparing the garden. The edible garden will be on display until after Easter when it will be carefully transported to Healing Minds crèche in Walmer Township. The school cares for about 60 young children from underprivileged backgrounds. Snake scare in suburbs Continued from page 1 “Residents should also keep their cats and dogs inside. A puff adder found in a Malabar resident’s garden killed three cats,” he said. Marshall added that an hour before the sun goes down and an hour afterwards, is when the snakes are most active. “If you have sliding doors, it would be best to close them.” If bitten by a snake, Marshall advises residents to remain calm. “If you do get bitten by a snake, don’t panic. Identify the snake or take a photo of the snake and go to the hospital – but get someone else to drive you there,” he advised. “By April, snake activity should start to decrease because the weather conditions change and breeding season will come to an end.” Chairman of Wildline, Arnold Slabbert, who focuses on urban conservation, said that snakes are preparing for winter. “It’s that time of the year when snakes are probably the most active and preparing for winter. The snakes want to fatten up. This is not an unusual year, this is normal. The next active period would be in spring when it starts getting warmer,” Slabbert said. “It’s not unusual to get six or seven calls a day. The majority of snakes in urban areas are harmless. The main venomous snakes here are the puff adders, Cape Cobra and boomslang,”

We called snake expert, Mark Marshall, and they were there very quickly.” Sydie added that a week ago, his neighbour’s dogs kept barking and they eventually found a one-metre puff adder in the neighbour’s yard. “We are concerned about our dogs because a puff adder has the potential to kill about ten dogs,” Sydie said. Slabbert added. Slabbert mentioned that the best reaction to finding a snake, would be to call the experts. “If you do find a snake in your house or garden, don’t try to kill or catch it. March is World TB Awareness Month REPORTER MARCH is marked as World Tuberculosis (TB) Awareness Month. With half a million new infections every year, TB is one of the leading causes of death in South Africa. High rates of HIV co-infection and increasingly drug-resistant strains mean the disease is showing no sign of abating. During a recent TB documentary launch held in Port Elizabeth, the Eastern Cape Department of Health’s tuberculosis hospitals said the Eastern Cape had one of the highest numbers of cases of multidrug-resistant tuberculosis (MDRTB) in South Africa. The provincial manager for the Eastern Cape’s South African Red Cross Society, Ruth Mufalali-Van Rooyen, said Nelson Mandela Bay was one of the districts in the Eastern Cape that had a high number of TB cases. The other districts with high numbers of TB cases were OR Tambo District and Buffalo City. “The community as a whole needs to support patients with TB. “People without TB need to be educated on what TB is and how somebody can get infected with it, and also on infection control and prevention measures.” Mufalali-Van Rooyen added that TB patients also needed to understand TB infection control and prevention. “The South African Red Cross Society believes that TB is not an individual problem but

that of the community and that is why our activities are driven to enhance community involvement,” she said. The Treatment Action Campaign (TAC) and partner organisations recently wrote to Health Minister Aaron Motsoaledi, urging the rapid introduction of a new tuberculosis test in South African hospitals. TB is particularly difficult to diagnose in people living with HIV who have low immunity or who are seriously ill. The Lipoarabinomannan, or LAM test, works by detecting TB antigens associated with TB in a patient’s urine. The test is easy to implement and results are available in 25 minutes. At about R40 a test, it is also affordable. The letter follows the publication of findings in the medical journal the Lancet from a study that showed that use of the LAM test can reduce mortality in hospitalised people living with HIV who have low CD4 counts or who are seriously ill. More than 2000 study participants were randomly assigned to receive either normal TB testing or the normal tests plus the LAM test. After eight weeks 21% of the people in the LAM group had died compared with 25% of the people in the control group. This amounts to a relative risk reduction of 17%. Making the test available in South African hospitals will require healthcare workers to be trained on the LAM test and the development of guidelines for its use.

Driving school owner gives back to Helenvale residents

National Water Week launched: ‘Water for people, Water by People’ THE Minister of Water and Sanitation, Nomvula Mokonyane, officially launched National Water Week on Sunday, March 13, at the Dan Qeqe Stadium in Zwide. National Water Week, held from March 14 to 22, under the theme ‘Water for People, Water by People’, serves as a campaign mechanism of the Department of Water and Sanitation. As part of the launch of National Water Week, a national prayer for rain was held on Sunday, where various religious faiths were invited along with communities to dedicate a moment in prayer for rain, rehabilitation of our natural water sources and protection of water streams and rivers. Water Week is aimed at re-emphasizing the

importance of water, the scarcity of this resource and the need to manage this resource in a sustainable way that appreciates its role in eradicating poverty and under-development. ‘Water Week 2016’ is held as the country faces the most severe drought which has affected parts of our country, leaving many households without access to water and causing devastation for crop producers and livestock farmers, in particular. As a result of the drought, many South Africans have come forth with various drought mitigation proposals and have begun to engage government on the need to partner in programmes aimed at conserving water and managing this scarce resource efficiently.

MORNÉ DU RANDT THE owner of a driving school in Booysen Park is giving back to his community in the same way that he received help years ago. Jenovian Arends (32), has already helped 30 residents of Helenvale to receive their learners’ licences recently. He offers his services free of charge to Helenvale residents with the help of sponsorships. Another 70 residents are hoping to receive their learners’ licences in April and another 400 are hoping for enough sponsorships to enable them to obtain their learners’ licenses later in the year. Arends, who grew up in Helenvale, was helped by Billy Paulson, local musician and director of the Northern Arts Festival, to obtain his licence years ago. Today Arends is the proud owner of his

own business, The Bay Driving School, and decided to assist others who do not have the means to obtain their learners’ licences. Emeralda Jackson (34) said it was a big dream to obtain her learner’s licence, particularly in the area where she is living because “nothing positive ever happens here.” She added, “Now a seed has been planted and it is starting to bloom.” Lorenzo Prince (20) is also very impressed with the opportunity which he received to obtain his learner’s licence. Prince says that Arends is a very good example to them. “Everything that he is doing for Helenvale is good and I will also one day try and do good within this community.” Arends says the greatest reward he receives, is the smile that radiates from each student once they have taken that next step towards a better future.

New mobile shredder destroys hard drives REPORTER

< eWaste Technologies Africa managing director Enrico Vermaak (middle), Jeanine HornErasmus (Business Development Executive), right, and Shaun Philander (Junior Engineer), left, display some office supplies which has been made from electronic waste.

AN Eastern Cape technology start-up company is revolutionising electronic waste disposal and recycling in South Africa through a mobile unit dubbed the “e-shredder”. This device will help private and public sector organisations to discard electronic products that have become unwanted, nonworking or obsolete. Once e-waste has been sanitised, the recycled components will be upcycled into consumer goods which in turn will provide job creation in arts and crafts sectors. eWaste Technologies Africa (eTA), a client of the Seda Nelson Mandela Bay ICT Incubator (SNII) in Port Elizabeth, has a zero-tolandfill policy, which means the company is committed to finding ways for e-waste to be reused, recycled or repurposed. In South Africa, e-waste makes up 5% to 8% of municipal solid waste. E-waste is also growing at a rate three times faster than any other waste forms in the country. “eWaste can be transformed into art. They will create jobs and the money made on these projects will be theirs. The non-profit organisation can make jewellery, clocks, and so much more,” said Enrico Vermaak, eTA Managing Director. eWaste Technologies Africa recently repurposed a hard drive shredder into a mobile waste disposal unit. This means it can be transported to a client’s premises where it will provide secure hard drive destruction service. The company will offer clients enhanced data sanitation services by ensuring that information on devices is rendered completely inaccessible even before the equipment in which it is stored is recycled or disposed of. “We scrub all hard drives, ensuring our methods are compliant with the South African National Intelligence Agency requirements,” said Vermaak.

PHOTO: SUPPLIED

“If the information on old IT equipment isn’t sanitised or destroyed properly before disposal or sponsorship, it could cause massive reputational damage to your company. Just imagine the implications of the unsanitised laptop of your CFO ending up in the hands of a competitor or local media,” he said. “The mobile e-waste shredder will be taken to a company or individual’s premises to perform physical data destruction on hard drives and solid state drives. A certificate will be issued as proof that the hard drive was destroyed.” eTA also offers on-site e-waste receptacles and collection services for the disposal of e-waste.

“Until recently very few companies considered proper data sanitation or destruction as an option. We have received old PCs and laptops that were deemed ‘wiped’, and found very sensitive information on them. Fortunately all devices that we receive are sanitised before further processing.” Vermaak added that most large corporates buy laptops, desktops and tablets with an OEM Microsoft Operating System licence included. Typically these Operating Systems are upgraded to comply with company licences. “When the machine is disposed of or sponsored, the upgraded Operating System must be removed and replaced with the original OEM licence. This may only be done with the

original CD/DVD that was distributed with the device. As a Microsoft Registered Refurbisher (MRR), we will ensure that all licensing obligations are met.” Vermaak explained that the use of e-waste in art was a new project his company was busy with as part of their social responsibility. “It is a pilot project. We will sponsor the e-waste and tools to the community, who in turn make jewellery or office supplies such as business card holders or book holders.” eWaste Technologies Africa is a member of the e-Waste Association of South Africa (eWASA), the body that oversees industry best practices and the latest recycling techniques.

PUPILS of St George’s Pre-Primary School in Port Elizabeth were dressed to the nines last Friday in Victorian wear as they were taken down memory lane by their teachers. “The Victorian Tea is an annual event where we’re walking down memory lane with our pupils as we give them the history of our school,” said teacher Sheron van Wyk. According to van Wyk, the pupils were told the history of their school from when

it was a mansion that was then sold to become an institution of learning. “They dress in the Victorian clothing and walk down Bird Street to 7 Castle Hill before they had Tea at the school,” van Wyk said, adding that the little children became the Very Important People (VIPs) during Tea where their parents cook and serve them scrumptious meals. The little ones enjoyed the day and felt the idea of being special. Asked how she felt, Hanah Stiglingh (9) said, “Excited and comfortable. I also feel pretty like I am living in those days.”

Speaker inspires local businesswomen REPORTER “FROM working at one of the most innovative technology companies in the world to producing my first feature film, Ayanda, I’ve truly realised there are no boundaries for women. You can go anywhere and do anything as long as you put your mind to it.” These are the inspiring words of Busi Sizani, Marketing Manager of Uber Technologies Inc., who visited Port Elizabeth last week to address members of the PE branch of the Businesswomen’s Association of South Africa (BWA) at its Annual General Meeting.

“Being in the tech industry is fascinating. You have to constantly be on the go and keep up with trends. It’s dynamic and fast-paced and often presents changes that leave you breathless. Being a woman in the tech industry has allowed me to experience it right in the moment,” she said. Busi is one of the talented marketing managers at Uber, based in Cape Town. She joined the company mid last year. Her focus is corporate partnerships for Uber in sub-Saharan Africa. Before joining Uber, she was an executive producer for Octagon SA and brand manager for Endemol Africa, before starting her own consultancy and producing her first feature film which recently aired in SA and the USA. “We have invited Busi to address us as Uber now has a strong presence in our city. She is a woman in business who has risen through the ranks and who is successful in what she does - an inspiration to many other women,” said Michelle Brown, Chairperson of the local BWA.

Granny (82) goes skydiving Down Under HEILIE COMBRINCK BEEN there, done that, got all the t-shirts ... what’s next? This might sound like a nonchalant comment from of a twenty-something globetrotter. Surprisingly not. It is a 82-year-old lady from Port Elizabeth. Owing to Bonita Hughes’ granddaughter, who happens to be a real globetrotter currently living in Australia and who inherited her granny’s traits, the two decided to enjoy tandem skydiving at Jurien Bay. “Margaret told me how exciting it is to skydive and said, you know, that is something that I’ve always wanted to do,” said Hughes, whilst keeping an eye on her grandson doing his homework. “She said, oh well, Nana, I will take you one of these days.” On Hughes’ recent visit to her daughter Carol in Perth, Australia, Margaret asked her granny if she is still eager to jump out of an aeroplane? Hughes replied, “Oh, can a duck swim!” and that was the spark for another unforgettable adventure. “Strange in actual fact, I was very excited and wanted to do it. But as we were travelling to Jurien Bay, which is a two-hour drive along the western coast, north of Perth, it started completely clouding over. I thought, is the Lord trying to tell me something?” They however drove on and were informed by the skydivers to wait until noon to see if the sky would clear. “Suddenly it started clearing. So, we went through the process of documentation and indemnity forms and my son-in-law said I had to take insurance in case something went wrong. “But they don’t insure you after the age of 75. It once again made me reconsider; is the Lord really trying to tell me something? But, I made up my mind that I am going to do it.” When at an altitude of 14 000 feet, Hughes was told that she and her tandem partner would go first. “Scared? No, not all, I wanted to do it. The only thing that I thought of was oh my goodness will I ever straighten up, as we were diving head first. “We free fall for 9 000 feet and your flesh is being blown right in, especially when you are older and not so firm anymore. At 5 000 feet the parachute opened and then I could relax and enjoy the view over the turquoise bay. We had fun and our tandem partners spun us around and steered me and Margaret close-by so that we could have a chat.” “I enjoyed the free fall, but the gliding was absolutely amazing with a beautiful view over Jurien Bay, which is classed as the most beautiful bay in that area. “The landing on the beach was absolutely wonderful. You lift your legs, but do sort of end up on your behind.” Hughes received a warm welcome back on terra nova and was awarded a certificate, stating her successful skydiving at “the world’s most beautiful beach skydive”. “It was lovely. The adrenaline takes over. Even the following day and the following day I was still on a high-kind-of-thing.”

Bonita Hughes (82) from Port Elizabeth and her granddaughter Margaret Goldsmith ready to take to the blue skies at Jurien Bay on the west coast of Australia. PHOTO:SUPPLIED When arriving back in Port Elizabeth at the airport, Hughes was politely asked by the air hostess if she needed assistance getting off the plane. “I thought it was very funny, if only she knew that I have just jumped out of an aeroplane some 14 000 feet in the air.” Hughes, an avid hiker, photographer, abseiler and line-dancer, also does trim gym and pilates and loves climbing mountains. She has been a member of the Voetsac Hiking Club for the past 29 years and also is a member

of the Caritas Service Centre, a senior citizens club which is part of the Echo Foundation. “I would like to do hang-gliding to spend more time in the air, looking around and to enjoy the environment. Skydiving goes by too quickly. Only 5 minutes and you are back on earth.” Without hesitation she said, “cage diving I would really like to experience being close to the sharks! “You’ve got to expand your horizon, go out and enjoy nature and God’s creatures.”

THE Dora Nginza Hospital is looking for a volunteer teacher to read stories for the inpatients. The person should be able to keep children entertained while they are receiving treatment at the hospital. Pamela Rubushe, Principal Medical social worker, said the children range from 3 to 12 years old. “These children come from various backgrounds and racial groups. A volunteer who understands and speaks all three official languages would be an added advantage, but will be accepted even if she/he speaks only English and Afrikaans,” Rubushe said. “The most important thing is that the children have access to physical activity, playing, and some form of education, no matter how minimal.” The volunteer may start from April 1, 2016. Those who are interested may contact Matron Mancapha on 041 406 4319 or Pamela Rubushe on 041 406 4328.

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 16 MARCH 2016

COMPETITION: WIN NEW BATTERY UP TO THE VALUE OF R2 500

Battery Centre PE celebrates 25 years THIS year, Battery Centre Port Elizabeth celebrates 25 years as a reliable supplier of quality batteries to the Eastern Cape automotive hub and would like Port Elizabethans to join in the celebration! Win a new battery up to the value of R2 500 with free installation at your nearest Battery Centre. Battery Centre PE was opened in June 1990 by André Howitz, and has grown in strength and size, now serving a large client base in and around PE.

the centre off the ground. They had only a handful of employees, so did most of the work themselves, but relied on friendly service and quality batteries to make a name for themselves. “Our approach to business has always been

grounded in honesty and integrity,” explained Howitz. “This has played a huge role in our success.” After their first Battery Centre gained a loyal client base, Howitz and his wife decided to open a second outlet in Newton Park and then Knysna. Howitz maintained the key to longevity in the retail space is exceptional employees. “I’m only as good as the people I surround myself with – my team is integral in the maintenance of each Battery Centre,” said Howitz.

Small start

Keen adaption

After building industrial batteries in East London for seven years, Howitz and his wife, Jillian, moved to Port Elizabeth and opened the first Battery Centre in the area in June 1990. The pair faced obstacles from the outset. “When we first opened in PE, our customers didn’t know the product at all, and didn’t understand the value in it, which made for a very daunting start,” said Howitz.

Energetic approach Armed with unapologetic determination, Howitz and his wife worked tirelessly to get

Win a battery worth R2 500.

With over 25 years’ experience in the industry, Howitz has seen the market change fundamentally since he started out. “The vehicles of today are so much more advanced and demanding than they were years ago – Bluetooth, immobilisers, alarms, sound systems and onboard computers – but luckily our supplier, First National Battery, continues to produce world-class batteries that keep up with the ever-changing needs of modern technology.” To find out more about Battery Centre, visit www.batterycentre.co.za.

Win! Win! Win! To stand a chance of winning a battery, like our Facebook page (PE Express Newspaper), find the Battery Centre photo and tell us what car you drive.

Competition Ts & Cs: 1. The prize may not be exchanged for cash. 2. The value of the prize is dependent on the battery required by the winner’s vehicle. Maximum value of a battery and installation is R2 500. 3. No purchase necessary to be eligible for prize. 4. The winner will be drawn at random. By entering the competition you accept that the publisher’s decision is final. 5. The winner agrees to collect his/her prize at a Battery Centre, pre-arranged with First National Batteries PR agency. 6. The closing date for the competition is March 23 at noon. 7. The competition is open to all readers of PE Express, except employees of Media24 Group, Battery Centre, First National Battery and their media agency, as well as their immediate family.

RECIPE: EASY AND SIMPLE TREAT FOR EASTER

Fruit buns with a twist with Castle Milk Stout REPORTER A MILK Stout has many versatile characteristics which make it the ideal beer to use when cooking. One such innovative idea can be seen in food stylist and Drizzle and Dip blogger Sam Linsell’s version of a fruit bun, using South Africa’s leading milk stout brand as her secret ingredient. Julian Remba, the brand’s general manager, said, “Castle Milk Stout is made from quality dark roasted malt and is matured for longer to give it a rich, smooth and satisfying taste experience. “Full-bodied and creamy with low levels of carbonation, this makes it the perfect match for food and also to be used in cooking.” These delicious and spicy fruit buns are so easy to make that Linsell says you won’t ever buy them again. The recipe makes 16 – 18 buns but any excess can be frozen.

Ingredients: one 340ml bottle Castle Milk stout 2 tsp instant dry yeast 2 tsp cinnamon 1 1/2 tsp ground ginger 1 tsp mixed spice 870g flour (divided) 100g citrus peel 150g raisins 150g dried cranberries 100g soft dried apricots, finely chopped 250ml strong black tea one egg 50g melted butter 50g caster sugar (plus extra for glaze) 1 1/2 tsp salt

Method: . Prepare the mix the night before

by mixing the stout, spices, yeast and 320g of the flour in a large bowl. Mix to combine everything and leave uncovered. . Brew a strong cup of tea in 250ml boiling water and pour this over the raisins, dried cranberries, peel and apricots in a separate bowl. . The following day, mix the egg and melted butter with the fruit, and then stir this into the beer and spice batter. Add the remaining 550g flour, sugar and salt. Tip this onto a work surface and briefly knead to form a large ball. Leave for 10 minutes. Lightly oil your hands and knead the dough for 10 seconds, leave for 10 minutes, then repeat twice more at 10-minute intervals, then leave for an hour covered with a tea towel in a warm spot. . Using a bread cutter or sharp knife, divide the dough into 100g pieces (use a scale to make this easier) and shape into balls. Arrange these on a large baking tray lined with baking paper so they are just touching each other. Cover with a tea towel and place in a warm spot for 90 minutes. . Preheat the oven before the proving has finished. Mix a little flour with water to form a runny paste consistency (use an electric whisk to get this smooth if necessary). Place in a plastic piping bag and cut a very small edge off the tip. Pipe crosses on each ball of dough. Bake at 200°C (180°C fan-assisted) for 25 minutes. Mix 2 tablespoons of caster sugar with 2 tablespoons of water and brush this over the hot cross buns as they come out the oven. Serve with lashings of butter.

INVITATION TO THE SRA ESTABLISHMENT MEETING INVITATION TO ATTEND A PUBLIC MEETING TO ESTABLISH A SPECIAL RATING AREA (SRA) FOR ALL WALMER HEIGHTS PROPERTY OWNERS Dear Walmer Heights Property Owners/Residents You are invited to attend very important meetings after some real progress has been made with regard to the possible formation of the Walmer Heights Special Rating Area (SRA). These meetings seek to ensure that everyone exercises his/her right to support or not to support this initiative. These meetings will, in conjunction to this advertisement, be advertised through flyer distribution in your post boxes and loud hailing. The meetings will explore the following key issues: • • • •

Why a Special Rating Area? Benefits to property owners and residents; Envisaged model of implementation; and Envisaged process involved going forward.

Venue: Walmer Country Club Date: Thursday 17 March and Tuesday 22 March 2016 Time: 18:30 for both days An official SRA can only be established with the cooperation of property owners and it is therefore important that as many property owners as possible attend this public meeting. Although the SRA is envisaged for the area to be suggested by property owners, the invitation is extended to all residents in Nelson Mandela Bay, as it is critical that another successful SRA be established in the Walmer Heights area. For further information please contact Wayne Smith on 083 271 5341. Your attendance and input in this regard will be appreciated. Yours Faithfully Pierre Voges CHIEF EXECUTIVE OFFICER (CEO)

Madibaz’ Vorstman in fast lane to success REPORTER BESET by injury problems as a junior, Mecer NMMU-Madibaz fast bowler Henco Vorstman came of age this season by playing a leading role in the team’s triumphant run in the Nelson Mandela Bay Cricket Board Premier League. The 20-year-old paceman reaped the dividends of the many hours of work he has put into his bowling to claim 23 wickets during the season – an important factor in the Madibaz’ success. In paying tribute to his coaches and teammates, Vorstman described the summer as one of his best seasons and was delighted to make a significant contribution to the team. “Working hard has never been a problem for me, and seeing my hard work pay off was just delightful,” Vorstman said. “Taking three five-wicket hauls has made this my best season so far and I couldn’t have done it without the help of my coaches and God. “Contributing to the team in the way that I did was one of the best feelings that a person can get. I’m just glad that I could help the Madibaz Cricket Club over the line.” Having grown up in Pretoria, where he attended Elarduspark Primary School and Waterkloof High, Vorstman said he had been involved in cricket ever since he could remember, first playing the game as a fouryear-old. After matriculating in 2014, he moved to Port Elizabeth where he lives in a flat in Humewood and is studying a BComm Business Management degree at NMMU. Following his successful season, Vorstman is looking forward to making his mark in the game to realise the potential he showed as a junior. “I played in the Northerns provincial teams from U11 up to U19. I haven’t made any major teams yet as I had problems with

injuries in the past which kept me from realising my full potential. “But being selected for the U19 (Northerns) Coke Week team and then the Titans Cubs have been among the highlights, and then obviously playing for NMMU’s first team straight out of school. “My future is in my hands and I’m a long way away from giving up,” Vorstman said. While cricket clearly plays a big role in his life, the quicky is equally determined to make his mark off the field. “I chose this degree because I want to start my own business after I hang up my cricketing boots. It has been a passion of mine, and the drive behind creating something of my

own also influenced my decision. “I’ve managed to make small breakthroughs in my entrepreneurial ventures and I try to fill myself with as much business-orientated knowledge as possible. “I like to have some sort of structure to my life. It really isn’t easy to try to accomplish two life objectives at the same time, but at the moment I’m just happy to be here. “Knowing when to concentrate on which aspect is vital, but making time for some fun activities is just as important.” Having achieved their objective of winning the league, Vorstman said they would now focus on competing in the national

club championship in Pretoria at the end of April. “Training hard and making sacrifices that other people wouldn’t make were just a small indication of the hunger we had as a team. “But our eyes are set on the next objective, and we will take this victory as a solid base going forward as a club. “I just want to add that even though I received acknowledgment for my performance, it was the whole team that made winning this league possible. “The coaching staff are world-class and, as a group of cricketers, we cannot ask for more,” Vorstman added.

The strange ins and outs of sport WHAT a weekend of sport it was! Just about everything you could want from sport was there in one form or another – debatable decisions on the rugby field, drama on – and off – the cricket pitch, trouble in the tennis world involving the blonde darling of millions with the Hollywood looks.

There is this friend who when not following sport on TV, switches over to “True Movies. In a huff last weekend he said if he ever again sees the “Sneak Peek about the US president telling a subordinate, who brings news of imminent war, to make sure Laura and my girls are safe... “I swear I’ll just dump my TV set in the dustbin. “Quite right, said another of our pals with a broad wink, “sport’s far more important than war anyway. That’s when, with a “hearhear, we ordered another round. Then we started to talk about the Super Rugby game at Newlands between the Sharks and Stormers last weekend and the controversial try awarded to the Banana Boys. “Wasn’t that something? our friend went on. “Specially that penalty try that eventually saw the Banana Boys fly home with an 18-13 win. Why was it a penalty, though? What puzzled him was what happened at the very moment scrumhalf Cobus Reinach was about to touch down for a try: one of the Stormers forwards, Siya Kolisi, had kicked the ball out of the KZN player’s hand, denying the scrumhalf a legitimate touch-down. Referee Mike Fraser after a close look at the filmed replay awarded it as a penalty try. It was explained by some of the

other experts at the bar counter that the ref’s reasoning was that a deliberate impeding of a try by the kicking of the ball from the halfback’s hand, amounted to a foul. Therefore, according to the letter of the law a penalty try was the correct decision. In all the match produced some 80 minutes of determined attack and breathtaking defence. Players who stood out on both sides included Sharks’ Joe Pietersen, Willie le Roux, Marcel Coetzee and Jon-Luc du Preez, and for the opposition: Cheslin Kolbe, young Leolyn Zas, and in particular Schalk Burger and Eben Etzebeth. Crossing from the rugby field to the cricket pitch – and in particular our one-time world No. 1 fast bowler, Dale Steyn, it’s one of the oldest sayings in the English language, but it truly is “make or break for the Proteas’ reliable wrecker of opposition batsmen. With the World T20 tournament in India already underway this deadly wicket-taker’s career comes strongly under the spotlight, starting with the Proteas’ first match against England this week (SS 202, 3pm). Once even the best of batsmen’s knees shook a little as they awaited one of this speedster’s unplayable deliveries. Can he still do it? With bated breath cricket fans the world over will be watching closely. And what of the blonde locks lady with the Hollywood looks, and the “performance-enhancing drug she has been taking for the past 10 years? She’s pleading innocence. She was just doing what her doctor advised her to do. Oh, really? Maria Sharapova, go pull the other one please!

Campbell wins 3 Beaches Challenge FOR the second year in a row Port Elizabeth’s Bruce Campbell won the popular City Lodge Hotels Group 3 Beaches Challenge which took place last Sunday morning along the Port Elizabeth Beachfront. A unique event which sees participants racing between and coming to shore on the city beaches before completing a 5km run back to the start saw over 170 entries this year. In the individual Men’s category Campbell was followed closely by Bradley Reen and Jack de Kort whilst in the Ladies’ category it was Antonella Saporta who took the win from Lauren Munton and Liza Kingston. Then in the duo-team category the pairing of Kevin Richards and Billy Browne proved too strong as they beat Nick Mowbray and Mark Groch with father and son pairing PJ and Cameron Duffy in third place. In the quad-team category it was Ken Craig and his two sons, Connor and Craig, that

teamed up with Graham Young to win the race ahead of team T4 and the team ‘Three Kings and a Queen’. In the lifesaving Ironman Category it was 21-year-old Wayne Jones who led from the start to beat his younger brother Daniel with Bryce Lloyd in third place. All winners won themselves meal vouchers from one of the City Lodge Hotel Group establishments in Port Elizabeth whilst lucky draw prizes from hydration sponsor BOS Sports, News Cafe, Bargain Buys and Caltex Eastern Cape up for grabs on the morning. Pictures from the event are available on the Zsports Events NPC Facebook page with full results on the event website (www.3beaches.co.za). Penultimate aQuellé ocean racing series this Sunday It’s Round 9 for the aQuellé Ocean Racing Series this Sunday morning on Hobie Beach with all the action getting underway from

9am. With just two race days remaining for Season XI, it’s getting tight for those in contention for overall Series honours. With 5 of the possible 9 race days (round 2 was cancelled) counting for overall points, it’s over the next two race days that the Series is won or lost. For some who have performed well all season, the overall title is already assured and this is true for two of our top swimmers. Ian Venter (1km) and Daniel Jones (2km) have each won 5 races already in the Series to secure themselves maximum points and the respective overall title. The Series prize giving function for Season XI will be held at News Café on Sunday, April 3, immediately after the last race day. Prize giving will be from 11am to 1pm with trophies and medals for the overall Series champions and the various age group winners. See www.oceanracingseries.com for further information and head down to Hobie Beach this Sunday for great family fun.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

F1 season of possibility THE question at the forefront of everything is can Ferrari take the fight to Mercedes. All indications are that the Italian team has made strides since last year and has closed the gap to Mercedes. All that remains to be seen is how close they can get. As F1 2016 gets under way this season will be longest in the sport’s history with 21 races. Germany’s Hockenheim makes a return to the calendar and Azerbaijan hosts its first ever race on the Baku City streets. The confirmation of the US Grand Prix gives the teams an added bonus. The F1 sporting regulation states that one engine must be used for four race weekends. As the US GP makes it 21 races the teams will be given a fifth engine thanks to the wording of the rule. When the change to the qualifying format was announced it left many perplexed. The quali format hadn’t been a bad one so why fix something that isn’t broken? But, let’s give it a chance and see how it pans out. The one-hour session will still consist of three parts. Q1 will be 16 minutes, after the first seven the slowest car is eliminated. Thereafter, the slowest car is eliminated every 90 seconds. Seven drivers will be eliminated while 15 advance to Q2. Q2 will be a 15-minute session with the slowest driver eliminated after 6 minutes. Likewise, every 90 seconds will see the slowest car eliminated. Seven drivers will be eliminated in this session with eight advancing to Q3. The Q3 session will run for fourteen minutes with the slowest driver eliminated after five minutes. The slowest driver will continue to be eliminated every 90 seconds. Two drivers will remain in the final 90 seconds of the session to shoot it out for pole position. An interesting aspect of this style of qualifying will be that the quickest cars will no longer be able to rely on getting through to the second part of qualifying on the harder of their tyre selection. It’s sure to throw the cat amongst the pigeons when there is rain about, and if it’s a lap longer than 1 minute 30 seconds. And let’s be honest anything that adds a bit of drama and intrigue is never a bad thing. What the new format has in its favour is that it takes the excitement from the final ten minutes of the session and spreads it throughout the entire hour.

The Albert Park circuit is a well known one. But there are many unknowns at the first race of the season. A new qualifying format, new tyre regulations, more driver freedom on strategy calls, and less radio communication from the pitwall. All of this has the potential to combine into an explosive season-opener. Mercedes has chosen to play up Ferrari’s

performance so far. Choosing to send both Nico Rosberg and Niki Lauda into the press with statements of Ferrari being a great threat. It could just be some clever psychological play by the champions. Or it could be real and we could in for a F1 season to be remembered. One way or the other the more than 100-day wait is finally over.

Madibaz’ swimming coach honoured NEDBANK Madibaz’ swimming team trainer Mark Edge was named Coach of the Year at the recent Eastern Cape Sport and Recreation Awards. The Department of Sport, Recreation, Arts and Culture hosted the awards in collaboration with the Eastern Cape Sports Confederation to honour locals for their contribution to sports development in the region. Mark Edge, a former Springbok swimmer and lifesaver linked to NMMU’s high performance centre, said,“I was extremely proud to receive this award. “Being a swimming coach is more of a passion than a job. The fact that I absolutely love what I do, motivates me every day,” Edge added. Last year, eight of his charges competed internationally at events such as the All-Africa Games, African Junior Swimming Championships, Fina Swimming World Cup and Commonwealth Youth Games. Edge said they brought home more than 20 medals from the galas. “They are showing tremendous growth and potential and I am excited about the future of swimming at NMMU,” Edge said. His swimmers had set 58 provincial age group and open records during the course of the year. He was also appointed coach of the national team that competed at the 28th Fisu World University Games in Gwangju, South Korea, last July. Two of his swimmers, Alard and Alaric Basson, were finalists in the Sportsman of the Year category. “It is a great achievement for them,” said the institution’s aquatics manager Melinda Goosen.” She said the brothers had represented South Africa at the All-African Games, the World Cup and University Games in 2015. Edge said his swimmers were now focusing on next month’s SA National Aquatic Championships in Durban, which double as the Olympic trials. – REPORTER
