he government investment of about R17 billion in the ocean economy was unlocked thanks to Operation Phakisa, President Jacob Zuma said at the port of Port Elizabeth on Friday. Zuma gave feedback on the progress of the government’s plans to unlock the so-called blue economy. According to government figures, jobs for about 4 500 people have been created since the announcement of Operation Phakisa in July 2014. A crowd of about 1 000 supporters in yellow ANC T-shirts loudly cheered for Zuma. He said the programme has given great impetus to the development of infrastructure. “We want to make our ports more efficient, with the necessary infrastructure to serve the maritime industry and to attract investment. “I am pleased to announce that the Transnet National Ports Authority allocated R7 bil-

Free WiFi project launched in the hub of Gelvandale REPORTER A COMMUNITY health and business centre in Gelvandale will be the first to benefit from a free Wi-Fi project in Nelson Mandela Bay. The project, a joint initiative driven by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University’s Centre for Community Technologies (CCT) and the office of the Deputy Minister of Telecommunications, Prof. Hlengiwe Mkhize, was launched on April 6 at the CCT-FamHealth Computer Labs. The project is part of the government’s national broadband roll-out initiative. The computer labs form part of Gelvandale’s FamHealth Medipark, which provides a range of medical services to the community, trains community health care workers, and runs youth training programmes through its NMMU-FamHealth Youth Leadership Academy (YLA) for Grade 11 learners. The labs, which were established a year ago, are also open to the public, and are used particularly by learners. The YLA programme, which targets “at-risk youth” and this year has 97 Grade 11 learners, is now in its fifth year. The teenagers are given training in technology, leadership, entrepreneurship and many other life skills they will need to become successful adults. CCT head Prof. Darelle van Greunen said, Gelvandale had become a suburb where children were no longer seen on the streets and neighbours were reluctant to visit each other, for fear of being caught in gang wars but the free Wi-Fi would enable community members to connect with each other online. “Our vision is to create a connected community in the northern areas that will not only assist in re-establishing the social constructs of this vulnerable community but will also fight substance abuse, gang violence and en-

hance education.” The computer labs have 25 computers and 10 tablets but the community will also be able to utilise the free Wi-Fi on their own phones and other devices. “Through the Wi-Fi project, we will now be in a position to connect schools and set up digital libraries and offer access to other programmes to support the formal education sector,” van Greunen said. She said the next phase of the project would be to partner with industry and the Metro to bring free Wi-Fi to underprivileged schools in the northern areas and townships – and then later to schools in deep rural Eastern Cape areas. “Where schools already have computers, we can assist them to connect to the Internet. If there are no computers, they will still be able to connect using tablets and cell phones, enabling the learners to carry out research for school projects. In 2011, the United Nations declared Internet access a basic human right. That is part of what I’d like to achieve, not just in Nelson Mandela Bay but throughout the Eastern Cape,” van Greunen said. In the rural areas, van Greunen is hoping to target schools at deep rural villages in the Willowvale area of the Transkei, which are under the Chieftainship of Chief Ngwenyathi Dumalisile, with whom NMMU has a Memorandum of Understanding, and which has led to the establishment of an ICT Resource Centre. She also hopes to expand the free Wi-Fi project to the nearby Donald Woods Foundation (DWF), which is the hub of Hobeni village, near Elliotdale. “If we can create public access to Wi-Fi there, we can connect 15 schools and eight health care clinics.” CCT already works closely with the DWF, in terms of rolling out ICT health care solutions to improve health care delivery.

Dié vroue, in samewerking met die Mandelabaai Ontwikkelingsagentskap (MBDA) en die White Door Hoopsentrum, stel daagliks hul lewens gevaar deur in dié bendegeteisterde gebied uit te gaan om vroue en kinders wat mishandel word, moed in te praat en in te lig oor hul regte. “Ek bly al meer as vyftig jaar in Helenvale en het al baie voorbeelde van huishoudelike geweld gesien: fisiek, emosioneel én ekonomies en dis verskriklik,” het Maria Stewart, programbestuurder van die “vrouedialoog” gesê. Stewart, wat ook deel is van die White Door Hoopsentrum, het voorheen in die polisie se

slagofferondersteuningsentrum gewerk. Maar navorsing het gewys dat meeste geweld binne huisgesinne plaasvind en alle slagoffers nie na vore kom om dit by die polisie aan te meld nie. “Vroue in die gemeenskap word soms geslaan en die lelikste woorde deur hul mans toegesnou. Hulle dink dis reg en doen niks daaromtrent nie omdat hulle nie hul regte ken nie,” het Stewart bygevoeg. “Ons hier van die vrouedialoog gee vir hulle raad oor waarheen hulle kan gaan om klagtes aan te meld, ’n beskermingsbevel te kry en hoe hulle dit kan gebruik.” Die lede van die vrouedialoog vind sélf ook baat by die program. Hulle ontmoet elke Donderdag in die Helenvale hulpbronsentrum om te ontlaai en hul leed en vreugde met mekaar te deel. Dit is ook hier waar hulle deur die MBDA toegespreek word en kennis oor vroueregte opdoen. Valerie Elie, een van die lede van die vroue-

dialoog, vertel hoedat die groep haar gehelp het. “Ek was self ’n slagoffer van mishandeling, maar hierdie groep het vir my hoop gegee. Ek het geleer hoe om met geweld te werk en dit te hanteer, nou kan ek ook uitgaan en probeer om ander slagoffers te help.” Volgens Eldridge Jerry, sosiale ontwikkelingsfasiliteerder by die MBDA, is die doel van die vrouedialoog om die gemeenskap se gees op te bou. “Vroue moet ’n sê hê en ons by die MBDA werk saam met die vrouedialoog en ander gemeenskapsleiers om veiligheid en vrede in ons gemeenskap te bewerkstellig.” ’n Groepie vroue van Helenvale wat in dié bendegeteisterde gebied uitgaan om mishandelde vroue en kinders te ondersteun, het Donderdag in die hulpbronsentrum bymekaargekom. This fact of life is what pushes the POPS Foundation to go full steam ahead with what is now their fifth annual Winter Drive. The POPS (The People Opposing Poverty in Society Foundation) Foundation is a registered non-profit organisation feeding over 60 000

meals per month. The winter drive started on April 1 and will run until June 1, 2016. Immediately thereafter POPS will begin with the process of distributing food parcels, clothes and blankets in June. “Our goal is to assist the needy, including those in informal settlements, as well as the most vulnerable in the Northern Areas. You can assist us with your prayers, which are greatly appreciated,” said Xenny Brown, POPS Foundation spokesperson. “Of equally great assistance would be warm winter clothing for adults and children, blankets and non-perishable food such as canned goods, rice, samp, mealie meal, pasta, sugar, soya mince, oil, etc. These are then made up into parcels for distribution to needy families.

Hy het ’n verdere gaping in die mark gesien – dié van loodgieter-instandhoudingswerk. Destyds was daar slegs een groot maatskappy in die stad wat hierin gespesialiseer het. Hy was gelukkig genoeg om ’n kontrak los te slaan om na die instandhoudingswerk van die meeste regeringsgeboue in Port Elizabeth om te sien. Hierna het vele kontrakte gevolg en dit het hom in staat gestel om sy vlerke te sprei. Hoewel Pieter se loodgietersonderneming steeds sy belangrikste belang was, en is, het hy sy aandag na die ontwikkeling van eiendomme verskuif. Aanvanklik het hy hom op die bou van meenthuiskomplekse toegespits. Nuwe aanbouings, maatskappy vorder In die 1990’s word Pickeringstraat 18 en aangrensende eiendomme gesloop om eindelik die Pickering Park-kompleks, waar heelwat nasionale en vooraanstaande plaaslike ondernemings vandag nog huurders is, te ontwikkel. bestuurder wat reeds 20 jaar by die firma betrokke is en haar man, Hugo, by die loodgietersonderneming aangesluit. Sedertdien bestuur hulle dié onderneming voltyds, met Pieter wat steeds na die groter kontrakte omsien en, waar nodig, raad gee. Hierdie skuif het Pieter die geleentheid gegun om meer tyd en aandag aan bouprojekte te bestee. Hy spits hom in hierdie tyd toe op die bou van lewensreg-aftreeoorde en pakhuise. Hy en sy span is tans besig met ’n nuwe aftreeoordontwikkeling in Lorraine. Die eerste eenhede sal hopelik in Augustus voltooi word. In 2016 is die Pieter Rademeyer Groep baie dankbaar vir enige sukses ten opsigte van hul sakebedrywighede. Hulle is in elke besigheidsaspek uitstekend gevestig met mededingende pryse wat deurlopend gehandhaaf word. Pieter Rademeyer Loodgieters is ook op die goedgekeurde lys van al die groot versekeringsmaatskappye. Pieter Rademeyer Loodgieters het ’n huishoudelike naam in Port Elizabeth geword. Derrin wins silver at boxing champs NCEBA DLADLA FORMER amateur star boxer Lesley Setou of Bluewater Bay always wanted one of his children to start fisticuffs. That call was answered just recently when his grandson, Derrin Rossouw (16), joined the sport. Grey High School Grade 10 pupil Derrin joined Ballistic Fight Club in Sydenham and soon won the Eastern Cape Amateur Boxing Organisation (ECABO) 70kg gold medal. His next big achievement was boxing in the finals of the South African

National Amateur Boxing Organisation SANABO Open Boxing Champions at the Peninsula University of Technology in Cape Town recently. He lost the finals and returned home with a silver medal – an achievement of which his family is very proud. “My father was an amateur boxer training in New Brighton. We grew up with boxing equipment at home and my father introduced us to the sport,” said Derrin’s father Lindon Rossouw. Derrin grew up interested in the training equipment like punching bags – and started using it. “He would wake up early in the

morning when there were big international fights on television. He would be the one waking me up, instead of the other way around,” said Lindon. He said the young Rossouw, who also aspires to become a pilot, asked him to find a gymnasium for him to join. “First, I took this lightly but after months of him persisting I decided to google the internet to find the nearest boxing gymnasium. This was, however, without success. “I phoned the NMMU Academy of Sport to make enquiries and that’s when I was told about the Nelson Mandela Bay Amateur Boxing Organisation who, in turn, referred us to the boxing club in Sydenham,” explained Lindon. Ballistic Fighting Club is owned by fitness fanatic Billy Louw. The boxing training is done by the successful boxing mentor Caiphus Ntante of Caiph Camp. “I know Les; we boxed together. He once told me he wanted a boxing club for his grandson to join in. “Before I knew it, he’s telling me now the boy is the SANABO Silver Medallist. I am so proud of him,” said Former professional Cape Middleweight Boxing Champion Terrence “Ace” Makuluza who is currently an International Boxing Ring Official. Both Ntante and Louw agree that Derrin is a young pugilist with a bright future. He trains hard, is disciplined and determined. they said.

Big Walk invests R380 000 in upgrades to EC cancer services CANCER facilities in the Eastern Cape will be receiving upgrades to the value of R380 000 after the official cheque handover to Igazi Foundation, beneficiary of the 2015 Algoa FM Big Walk for Cancer. Close to 12 000 people flocked to Summerstrand on October 31 last year for the annual event. Participants walk in memory and support of people affected by cancer. According to Dr Neil Littleton, the founding member of Igazi, the funds would be used to support the ongoing upgrades and improvements of medical equipment and other facilities at the Oncology wards at the Provincial Hospital. “We’ve been successfully hosting this event for the past 17 years in support of people affected by cancer, but since we partnered with the Eastern Cape Department of Health (ECDH) last year we were able to make a greater impact through the two-month long cancer awareness

campaign on Algoa FM that preceded the event,” said Managing Director at Algoa FM, Dave Tiltmann. Accompanied by the Algoa FM team, the ECDH hosted numerous health and cancer screenings at shopping malls in and around Nelson Mandela Bay including Kwanobuhle, Kenako and Cleary Park Mall. Over a thousand screenings were done collectively at the three activations, of which each activation was three hours in duration. The tests were all free and included hypertension, diabetes, blood pressure, glucose levels, cervical and prostate cancer, breast self-examination, and TB screenings and tests. “This initiative would not have been possible without the support of the community who warmly embrace the event every year,” said Tiltmann. “This event is evidence of what can be

achieved when corporates, government, the non-profit sector and the community work together. Planning for this year’s Big Walk for Cancer event is already underway. This year’s 5km walk will take place on Saturday, October 29. “Similar to that of previous years, the event promises every participant a unique experience, including competitions where early entrants can win big in the lead-up to the event. Walkers are encouraged to dress-up with family and friends in their craziest pink outfits.

BAY cancer survivor Petro Nortje received a successful bone marrow transplant in Pretoria in October 2014, and is aiming to show her gratitude to the people who have helped her though her ordeal. “I would want to give something back to the people that are keeping me alive everyday by helping them help others,” Nortje said. She is currently planning a fundraising event on May 14 at the Ukuphupha Conference and Wedding Centre in Kragga Kamma. The event will be in the form of a meet and greet with celebrity sportsmen and women and the auctioning of memorabilia from sports celebrities. All proceeds generated by means of donations, auctions and tickets will go directly to the Igazi Foundation, which is dedicated to improving existing haematological services

Ben Hoffman and Kaisa Lehtonen take top spots THIS year’s Standard Bank IRONMAN African Championship race blew wide open as expected podium finishers were pushed back and the finishing spots were taken by non-anticipated finishes. Hailing from the United States, Ben Hoffman, in a total time of 8 hours, 12 minutes and 37 seconds, claimed the champion spot. Kaisa Lehtonen from Finland won the top spot for the women in a time of 9 hours, 6 minutes and 50 seconds. Temperatures on race day were expected to be high, but athletes found the heat quite discomforting. Thousands of supporters and spectators came out to show their support and the atmosphere was electric. The swim began at 06:50, and although the sea was slightly choppy, most managed a comfortable swim. Leading out of the water was Estonian Marko Albert followed by Eric Watson from Bahrain and Dutchman Bas Diederen. Top three females in the swim exit were Jodie Swallow (UK), Annabel Luxford (Australia) and Dede Griesbauer (USA).

After a few minutes, she restarted her cycle, and regained her confidence to get her to a second spot behind Annabel Luxford. Towards the end of the cycle, Bas Diederen was leading. Following him were Marko Albert, Boris Stein, Tim van Berkel, Ben Hoffman and Kyle Buckingham.

The run started with Diederen and Albert with a lead of thirty two seconds. Finishing the bike portion of the race and starting the run was Luxford, Swallow, Gossage and Lehtonen. Just before reaching 2.6km on the run, Swallow decided to withdraw. Following the withdrawal, Luxford retained her lead, and was then followed by Lehtonen and Gossage. Luxford lost some ground as the run got underway and her two chasers caught up quickly. Towards the end of the run, Hoffman lead right up until the end. Even though Matt Trautman kept his third/fourth during the run, he lost ground four km’s from the end to Albert. Towards the end of the female run leg, Lehtonen dominated the lead. After the 23km mark, Lehtonen took over the lead from Luxford. The chase pack comprised of Susie Cheetham (UK) and Lucy Gossage (UK). Lehtonen had a massive lead and took the first place in the women. Following her was Susie Cheetham, with only two minutes behind, and in third place was Lucy Gossage, also with only two minutes in between.

Here’s how to give back to sport SO much was going on in sport last week that it was a case of looking here, there and just about everywhere. Where to start? How about Cricket South Africa (CSA) being so concerned about the state of the game here that it‘s enlisting the help of sportsmen from many different ports of call. Among the panel is former Springbok rugby captain, Francois Pienaar, who led South Africa to World Cup glory and the William Webb-Ellis trophy in 1995, the year of the country’s re-admission to the sport.

The panel, from many areas of sport, might also have included former Bok captain and 1995 manager of that winning team, Morne du Plessis, had he not turned down the invitation because of prior commitments. “Also because I feel I’m not in touch enough with the tendencies in modern sport – specially as regards cricket,” added the one-time Western Province demon fast bowler. CSA executive, Haroon Lorgat, said of this new venture: “It is right for us to undertake an objective and thorough review of our national team’s set-up and performances.”

Other prominent sporting experts joining the panel include former South African cricket captain, Ali Bacher. “I’m still in the early stages of finding out the intentions of the review of our national teams. It will become clearer in the next few days exactly what we want to achieve.” Looking ahead he added with typical Bacher enthusiasm: “It feels like I’m going to the crease again and getting the adrenalin pumping.” It seems the initiative, of which Sports Minister, Fikile Mbalula, has asked for a full report, will get underway almost immediately. Said one spokesman,“It will start within the next 10 days”. Added another: “They’re pushing to have it done shortly.” Over to the local playing front – the Sharks, at home, were firmly put in their place by Joburg’s Lions to the tune of 24-9 and it might have been worse had flyhalf Elton Jantjies not been adjudged guilty of a forward pass to Julian Redelinghuis early in the game. It was not the Sharks’ day. Not only were they found to be badly incompetent at scrum time but what looked like a serious

leg injury to Marcell Coetzee saw the ace loose-forward stretchered off in only the 32nd minute. The Lions, with Jantjies in something like his best form, made the demons of the sea look little better than dazzled dolphins. Here at home, in PE, the Kings unhappily looked nothing like royalty against the Bulls, able only to record points with two penalties in their 38-6 defeat by the Pretoria visitors. It was not the best of games by either side, though fast improving Bulls wing, Jamba Ulengo, can look back on his doubletry performance with pride. TAILPIECE: It might have been best to stay clear of SARU’s choice of the Springboks’ new coach, following Heyneke Meyer’s decision to quit the perilous job after his steady decline in the all-important area of success. The lucky man’s name has been officially announced. Those in the know said at the weekend that without doubt it is Allister Coetzee or “Toetie” as he’s affectionately known. If you’re a rugby fan you’ll know by now whether that’s right or wrong. Anyway, cheers for now – and the best of luck, Toetie!

Tyre strategy name of the game in China FROM the desert circuit of Bahrain the Formula 1 paddock travels to mainland China and the Shanghai International circuit for the third round of the 2016 season. Good news is abounding before the weekend of racing even gets underway. A unanimous front by the eleven Formula 1 teams has force fed the FIA enough sanity to compel a reversion to the 2015 qualifying format for the remainder of the season. It wasn’t through lack of trying from the FIA though. The governing body, not wanting to accept defeat, tried one last time to impose itself by putting an aggregate-style qualifying on the table. Thankfully this too was unanimously shown the door. Besides the fact that it restores the much preferred 2015 version of qualifying, this decision sets a precedent for future decisions. Teams have now shown that if they stick together and push hard enough they can effect some change. And though the FIA and Bernie Ecclestone will try to spin this decision into something that makes them look a bit rosier it just isn’t true. The reality is that it wasn’t a decision by the FIA but rather a bending under the pressure from teams and fans. Because of this you’d hope that it’s significant also where the fans are concerned. Along with the teams’ unanimous front the fans’ disapproval on social media played its part too. The FIA and Ecclestone have been reluctant in the past to grant social media any clout. Hopefully their opinion has been informed enough to start moving the sport towards embracing social media more. The best news is that now the focus can return to the most important thing - racing. In 2015 Toro Rosso’s Max Verstappen

brilliantly pulled off several overtaking manoeuvres into the extremely tight turn fourteen which follows on the kilometre long back-strait. Besides being one of the most unique first corners on the calendar the fast changes of direction in the middle sector will test just how good a chassis various teams have built for 2016. F1 first visited China’s Shanghai International circuit back in 2004 and has marked several landmark victories for drivers and teams. It was here in 2012 that Nico Rosberg won his first race and arrives in 2016 on the back of five consecutive victories and a goodlooking lead in the drivers’ standings. The best thing about Rosberg’s recent form is that it adds a new dimension to the championship. It’s put Lewis Hamilton into a position not known to him in the last two years, the hunter rather than the hunted. But we’re talking about Merc as if they’re not facing a determined threat from Ferrari. Sebastian Vettel and Kimi Raikkonen have a good enough car to push Mercedes all the way to the chequered flag. But they don’t have good enough car to out-qualify Rosberg and Hamilton with. Therefore, tyre strategy becomes vital. Raikkonen and Vettel have chosen an alternative tyre strategy to Merc for the Chinese GP. Both Ferrari drivers have chosen six sets of supersoft tyres while Rosberg and Hamilton have only five sets of the redwalled tyre. Should Mercedes run into rear tyre wear issues in China, as has been the case in the past, they won’t be able to run the supersoft tyre for as long. Whereas Ferrari, who has traditionally been able to get more out of the supersoft tyre, will hold a strategic advantage of being able to run on the quicker tyre for

longer. These permutations are only for the sharp-end of the grid. There is still an almighty battle in the mid-field which will undoubtedly rage throughout every one of Sunday’s 56 laps.

Time to show off your wheels REPORTER All car and motorcycle enthusiasts are invited to show off their wheels while having complimentary coffee and biscuits at the Speedyquip Cars and Coffee show on Saturday, April 16. One of the cars on show will be the 1955 Chevy Bel Air, owned by Stephen Bothma. Bothma said many happy hours were spent with his friend, rebuilding a custom performance 350 Chevrolet V8 engine. “The engine is a real ground-thumper. With a dropped front suspension and power frontdisc brakes, this ‘55 Chevy handles great,” said Bothma. The battery is in the trunk, showing its race

car heritage and most of the trim and accessories were imported from the USA. The interior looks great, with the original Bel Air steering wheel and a retro look AM/ FM/CD player, for sound. Bothma said he can remember telling his friends when he was 21 or so, that someday he would own a left hand drive ‘55 hardtop. He purchased his dream car in December, 2006, in Durban. The car had spent most of its years in the Karoo and Bothma is the third proud owner. He repainted the car, to his own custom colour combination.
