Bay in running for Ironman 70.3 REPORTER

P

ORT Elizabeth will be competing against Nice in France and Budapest in Hungary to host the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship over two days with more than 4 000 athletes from around the world expected to compete.

FRAMESBY VIER 50 JAAR

This announcement was made in Tampa, Florida, on Friday. The final decision on who will be hosting the event is expected in June.

The 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship will be a two-day event, like the 2017 edition – with the professional women and agegroup women racing on one day and the professional men and age-group men racing on the other. “The Ironman 70.3 triathlon series has grown exponentially over the past few years, with the World Championship featuring the best athletes from around the world,” said Andrew Messick, chief executive officer of Ironman. “We have been extremely pleased with the global rotation of the event and providing our

athletes with an exceptional world-class race in fantastic locations. Nice, Budapest and Port Elizabeth, Nelson Mandela Bay, are all extraordinary hosts to current Ironman and Ironman 70.3 races – providing beautiful and challenging courses and world-class hospitality for our athletes and families. Each city is well suited to host this pinnacle event.” This September, the 2016 Ironman 70.3 World Championship will be held in Queensland, Australia, with athletes representing more than 70 countries and ranging in age from 18 to 75-plus. In 2017, the championship event moves to

Chattanooga, Tennessee, USA, where it will be a two-day event for the first time. Beginning in July 2017, athletes from around the world will earn the right to compete in the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship by qualifying at any of the more than 100 Ironman 70.3 events globally. Ironman expects approximately 190 000 registered athletes to race at more than 100 events in the global Ironman 70.3 Series during the 2017 season in locations such as Australia, Brazil, Malaysia and China to qualify for the 2018 Ironman 70.3 World Championship.

REPORTER THE impact of the creative and cultural industries – both as drivers of economic growth and job creation, and nation-building and social cohesion – takes centre stage at the inaugural conference of the South African Cultural Observatory in Nelson Mandela Bay next month. Under the banner ‘Counting Culture’, the conference will highlight the growing influence of a sector – spanning visual and performing arts, heritage and museums, festivals, architecture, advertising, design and digital media – that is becoming globally recognised for its economic power. The conference will introduce the South African Cultural Observatory – a new national public research institute of the Department of Arts and Culture (DAC). Cultural Observatory chief executive, Prof. Richard Haines, said the conference was essentially populist, even though it emerges from academia and the necessity of research. “Insights from the sector are needed

from people on the ground, living and breathing work done in the creative and cultural industries – it is from these practitioners that our evidencebased work will emerge.” He said cultural and creative practitioners, professionals and academics, thought-leaders, sponsors and organisers would debate policy, research and practice in measuring and mapping the creative and cultural industries, at the Boardwalk Convention Centre from May 16 to 17. “Through presentation of research, policy analysis and lived experience, the conference aims to facilitate forward-looking discussions and contribute to current and emerging networks of interest in the creative and cultural domains. “Along with the leadership of DAC, we have attracted some high-profile and influential local, African and international delegates who will be contributing in presentations and panel discussions, and no doubt adding great value to our thinking on how the Observatory can support the socioeconomic potential of culture and creativity in South Africa,” Haines said.

Cultural Observatory’s chief research strategist and Rhodes University economics lecturer Prof. Jen Snowball, said the first local study of the impact of the creative and cultural industries in 2014 showed that these sectors employed up to 200 000 people and contributed almost 3% to South Africa’s GDP. “Undeniably, culture and creativity have been the cement that binds together not only hearts and souls, but entire societies and nations. Now there is also growing international interest in their potential to drive sustainable development and create inclusive job opportunities,” Snowball said. To register for the conference online, go to www.saco2016.co.za or contact conference organiser Salome Clack: email organiser@saco2016.co.za or call 082 907 0954.

The first of the 83year old bells of the Campanile Memorial, which is currently being refurbished to the tune of R5 million by the Nelson Mandela Bay Development Agency (MBDA), was removed last week. The Campanile is 92 years old and was built to commemorate the 1820 Settlers. It is about 53.5m tall with 204 steps which lead to the top of the tower where a carillon of 23 huge bells is situated. A structural assessment showed that the Campanile is not safe and that the steel structure where the bells hang is the most affected. The refur bishment will include modernising the Campanile by bringing cultural themes to the bell mechanisms. If all goes according to plan, the Campanile will be reopened to the public by March or April next year.

Win jewellery from Jenni Gault this Mother’s Day More about Jenni Gault Jenni Gault was born in Zimbabwe and is now “proudly South African”. Having started designing jewellery directly after school, she created her own brand 10 years ago. This is her 30th year since creating her very first design. Now known as Jenni Gault International Jewellery Design, she has taken this boutique range global. In July 2006 she was selected as the exclusive jewellery designer for Swarovski at SA Fashion Week. Building on her relationship with Swarovski she was soon after awarded her licence under their “Swarovski Elements” brand. Jenni operates from her Port Elizabeth studio. She travels, shows and sees her clients in London, Paris, Shanghai, New York, Las Vegas, Tokyo, Moscow, Dubai, Munich, Wattens and Hong Kong. Inspired by the wondrous palette which Swarovski provide, her entire range incorporates the world’s best crystal. Setting in sterling silver and stainless steel her designs are, at the same time, both glamorous and easy to wear. She has been honoured by being selected for the last three World Jewellery Facets by Swarovski. Drawing inspiration from the cultures she visits, her show stopping pieces all reflect

Women’s race supports terminally ill children REPORTER EVERY entrant running in this month’s SPAR Women’s Challenge will bring a dream to provide around-the-clock care for terminally ill children one step closer to reality. One of the event’s two beneficiaries, Northwood Children’s Hospice (NCH) in Mount Croix, was founded in 2010 to provide support, care and information for its little patients and their families. Founded by Maureen Lamb, they are currently a day centre, but are fund-raising tirelessly to expand the operation into a fulltime one, with a team of medical professionals on hand to offer both medical skills and palliative care. Lamb said that her team were driven by their love of children and every staff member was passionate about paediatric palliative care. “We see the care that we give as a ‘kiss in the pocket’ for children to carry as long as they need it,” said Lamb. She said proceeds from the Women’s Challenge would contribute to the centre’s Brick Challenge, which drives fundraising for the building of three patient wings needed for the little patients who need to stay and rest on site. “The gifts we receive from the work we do cannot be measured in human terms. However, the love and expressions of support we receive from the community always leave us with warmth in our hearts.” The Association for Persons with Physical Disabilities (APD) in Nelson Mandela Bay are the second beneficiary. SPAR Eastern Cape marketing director Abri Swart said they were proud to be associated with worthy causes such as NCH and APD. “We are about more than just shopping. We are passionate about the communities we serve and pride ourselves on enriching the community at large. “We also like the fact that our participants feel a sense of accomplishment in knowing that the race has assisted us in giving back to the community.” The SPAR Women’s Challenge takes place on May 7. For more information, visit www.apdec.org.za and www.northwoodchildrenshospice.org.

to assist Cotswold Primary School to repair and paint the outside of the buildings. Cotswold Primary School was established in 1958 – it started with two classes in a shop. In 1960 the school as seen today, was built. It is a multi-racial school with approximately 500 learners. Over the years the buildings have deteriorated due to lack of funds. General maintenance such as window repairs, painting and ground maintenance is required. The family fun day will be held on Saturday, May 7, at 9 William Street, Cotswold, from 9am to 3pm, to raise the necessary funds. Hamburgers, boerewors rolls, curry and rice, pancakes and cold drinks will be on sale. Entertainment for children includes a jumping castle, face painting and fun-filled games. There will be stalls selling handiwork and crafts. Stall cost is R50. For more information, contact Rudi Hills on 076 874 7464.

FOTO: VERSKAF

On Friday April 22, Sunridge Primary School celebrated World Book Day. Pupils were allowed to dress up as their favourite story book character if they donated a book to the school library. This initiative promotes reading to all ages and also ensures that the library stays updated. The Grade 6 teachers at Sunridge celebrated World Book Day by dressing up as some Hogwarts students. A SPECIAL PRAYER OF SUCCESS Before I met this powerful spiritual LADY AMELIA happiness was rare in my family. My life was filled with cheating, sick kids and bad luck. I tried many healers and remedies but all failed. I saw a testimony on local TV about and old couple, LADY AMELIA had united. I paid R200 consultation. She accurately read my fortune and told me my problems and showed me my enemies in water.

She performed a one day special prayer for me. She cleansed me, united me with my husband, gave me a special ring for luck and love crystals. Today I have a big business and my son enjoys a promotion. Thanks LADY AMELIA for fixing my marriage, luck, protecting me from my enemies, health and solving sexual problems. She saved my son from drugs and alcohol. Call LADY AMELIA 076 101 6134

New Tiguan coming to South Africa at end of year REPORTER THE new Tiguan, which will be launched in South Africa towards the end of 2016, kicks off the comprehensive SUV offensive by Volkswagen. It is the first Volkswagen Sport Utility Vehicle to be based on the modular transverse matrix (MQB), and it sets new standards in design, comfort and functionality. Its off-road capabilities have been enhanced with a rugged all-wheel drive system that includes premium class technology for use on and off the highway. The new Tiguan has been receiving positive reviews from the international

media. In the latest comparative test conducted by the largest motoring magazine in Germany, Auto Motor und Sport, the new Tiguan was chosen as the best SUV in its segment against its direct competitors. Recently, Auto Bild Allrad, Europe’s largest magazine for off-road vehicles, announced the new Tiguan as the 2016 “All-wheel Car of the Year”. The new Tiguan also won the “2016 Design Trophy” in the SUV category from Auto Zeitung, German’s special interest magazine. The new Tiguan engine line-up and retail prices for the South African market will be announced closer to the launch date.

OPEL’s awardwinning eleventh generation Astra. PHOTO: SUPPLIED

REPORTER OPEL’s award-winning eleventh generation Astra, which was crowned the 2016 European Car of the Year just last month, has reached South African showrooms. The Astra, which arrived at dealers on April 15, represents a quantum leap for Opel in this segment and will take the brand’s C-segment contender well into the next decade. The five-door hatchback has been designed and engineered to meet fast-changing consumer needs and demands that are shaping personal mobility against the backdrop of a densely-populated planet with finite resources. To meet these requirements, Opel set out to design, engineer and manufacture a vehicle that would be amongst the most efficient, lightest and best connected, and offer advanced safety and driver assistance technology. The new Astra is designed and engineered around four binding principles: efficiency, design, connectivity, and advance driver assistance and safety technology. Some of the key highlights of the new Astra are: ) Up to 200 kilograms lighter overall than before – depending on the model – thanks to a 20 percent weight savings from the body itself, and paring weight off systems like exhausts, and individual components like seats; ) More fuel efficient, thanks to a range of three turbo-charged and direct injection ECOTEC engines and the use of features like Start/Stop across the range; ) Significantly more aerodynamic than its

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

The wonderful world of sport HERE’S what makes rugby the great game it is. Just look at two of the Super Rugby results over last weekend: the Sharks in the final game of their Down Under tour against Chiefs, and the Stormers’ shock defeat at Newlands, at the hands of the Waratahs. It was so near yet so far for the South African teams in both cases. First up were the Sharks at the Yarrow Stadium in New Plymouth. Largely it had not been a happy tour. In just 40 seconds (read that again, it’s no mistake) the Sharks were 7-0 down. Soon, though, the South Africans were able to answer with a penalty by Garth April. However, by and large things did not get better. Soon the South Africans were trailing 10-3 and then after half-an-hour 15-3.

It was going to be one of those days – bad days for the South Africans – one feared. Yet another pasting. But no, slowly but surely the Sharks began to bite their way back. Captain Keegan Daniel opted to kick a penalty towards the corner for a lineout rather than go for the posts, and burly Kyle Cooper scored from the lineout. April added the extra two and suddenly the Sharks were looking a lot better, though lagging at 15-10. Then came a great moment as April scored with neat footwork and pace that caught the Chiefs’ defence clutching at straws. And at 15all matters seemed to be equal. With the Sharks scoring three tries to the Chief’s two the scorecard, the scorecard at 2422 still favoured the home side. Six minutes

to play and just two points in it. A penalty would do it – but it was not to be. And in fairness, though the Sharks had crossed the tryline three times to the Chiefs’ two, the home team, all round, were just slightly the better on the day. But what a game! Making it a double disappointment for South African opponents, the Stormers the very next day slipped to an equally disappointing 32-30 defeat. It was generally expected the Cape team would carry the day as the more polished outfit. But largely as a result of a first half in which they simply weren’t clinical enough, it wasn’t to be. In the end the Stormers, allowing too many opportunities to slip, had to accept that they simply weren’t good enough, indeed had only

themselves to blame for this narrowest of margins of defeat. But again, what a game! What a coincidence, too, that the very next day, after the Highlanders’ Jason Emery was red-carded for his mid-air tackle on Sharks fullback Willie le Roux, the same fate should await the Stormers’ Leolin Zas for a mid-air tackle on Waratahs flyhalf Bernard Foley. There could be no faulting referee Mike Fraser’s decision. The player in the air always has right on his side, which was how slow-mo TV showed it to be the case. FINALLY, just in case you’d like to know: Today (Wednesday, May 4) is 93 days to the Rio de Janiero Olympics in South America. South African stars in every sports discipline are hard at work to show what they can do.

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

Rosberg wraps up win number four IF you were a neutral there wasn’t much to enthuse about in the Russian Grand Prix. But these days’ neutrals are few and far between. And even a true neutral would have to be impressed with the spellbinding way in which Nico Rosberg won the Russian Grand Prix. While Rosberg led serenely away from pole position and Kimi Raikkonen snatched second from Valtteri Bottas, the carnage behind started to unfold. Sebastian Vettel, recovering from a fiveplace grid penalty, was attempting to pass Daniel Ricciardo’s Red Bull for fifth when Daniil Kvyat rammed into the back of him. As if to compound matters Kvyat rammed into the back of Vettel a second time in turn three. The Ferrari speared off into a wall, prompting a colourful tirade over the German’s radio. Kvyat’s catastrophic exuberance resulted in damage for both Red Bulls and the Force India of Sergio Perez and prompted the deployment of the safety car. Through the shower of carbon fibre and expletives, Lewis Hamilton emerged in fifth. The Brit was forced to start tenth after another power unit issue in Saturday qualifying. At the restart, Bottas was able to get the better of Raikkonen and snatched second as Hamilton made his way past the second Williams for fourth. He took advantage of Raik-

konen’s poor exit off turn three and quickly made it third place on the track. Bottas held off Hamilton until the first round of stops, but was unable to resist as Hamilton took second place with a move up the inside of turn two. By now Rosberg, untroubled in the lead, had built a near 14-second gap. Once in clear air Hamilton reduced the gap to 7.5 seconds before being warned of a water pressure issue. In the end Rosberg’s domination ended in a fourth consecutive victory by 25 seconds over Hamilton. Roughly six seconds down the road, Raikkonen completed the top three and rather sedately scored Ferrari’s 700th podium. Bottas finished a distant fourth ahead of Williams teammate Felipe Massa in sixth. Fernando Alonso scored his first points of the season with a fine sixth place ahead of Renault’s Kevin Magnussen in seventh. Romain Grosjean salvaged an eighth place finish for Haas ahead of Sergio Perez in ninth. Jenson Button made it a double points score for McLaren by taking the final point in tenth. It’s difficult to say that the Russian Grand Prix revealed everyone’s true form. Yes, Mercedes are still clearly the leaders of the pack, but in modern Formula 1 several factors conspire to control the pace of a driver.

@PEExpress1

For Kimi Raikkonen it was the necessity to save fuel that stopped him from pushing the Ferrari to its full potential. For Hamilton yet another power unit issue halted his assault on victory. “There wasn’t a doubt in my mind” Hamilton responded when asked if he could have won the race. As it was, Hamilton, in the unfamiliar bridesmaid role, sulkily made his way through the podium ceremony without bothering to spray the champagne. While Hamilton’s mood was understandable given his issues so far in 2016, it was unbecoming of F1’s “best ambassador” as he has dubbed himself. May 1 marked the death of the great Ayrton Senna 22 years ago. A driver who when truly tested delivered the very best of himself and his abilities. A driver who typified what a champion ought to be. The character of a true champion isn’t revealed as he basks in the glory of win after win. True champion character is revealed in how a driver responds in the difficult moments. For two years Nico Rosberg deferred to Hamilton, but now he has responded with the sort of tenacity that, if maintained, could carry him all the way to championship glory.

Gravett wins triafun event EAST London’s elite triathlete, 27-year-old Clinton Gravett, was a popular winner at Sunday’s Tri-a-Fun triathlon series hosted by the Eastern Province Triathlon Association at Pollok Beach. The penultimate round of the four-part fun triathlon event was well attended and included both individual and team entry in the primary schools, high schools and adult races. Chelsey Cooke (12) and Andrew Bosch (13) were the first to cross the line in the sub sprint distance for primary school children. Britney Brown and Jodi Wilson took second and third respectively in the girls’ category. Salmaan Abrahams and Reghardt Klinkenburg took the remaining podium positions in the boys’ category. In the team category it was the Hufkie Bros team winning from the Tri Girls. In the high school super sprint event, 14-yearold East London triathlete Travis Saunders was a comfortable winner ahead of Muhammad Allie and Dewald Klinkenburg. Team Whitesox won the team category and Ameena Cupp the girls’ category. With a good field of just more than 60 participants, the sprint distance triathlon saw Merrick Fairall and Jamie Riddle leading out of the

swim and cycle, but a fast running Gravett was too strong for the field and won in a fast time of 1 hour and 9 seconds ahead of the top three teams, Living Legacy (Riddle and Mila Zibi), Nutritech Elite (Byron Bronkhorst, Mauritz Erasmus and David Majara), and TDR (Travis McGrath, Ross Barnard, Donovan Shehab). December’s About IT Triathlon Summer Series winner, 19-year-old Keegan Cooke, was the second individual home in 1 hour 1 minute, with Fairall in third place in 1 hour 3 minutes. Bloemfontein’s Jayme Sue Vermaas was the first woman home, finishing in a time of 1 hour 10 minutes ahead of PE’s Liza Kingston (just 15 seconds back) and Alexia Loizou. The final round of the Tri-a-fun series takes place on Sunday, May 15, at Pollok Beach with a great array of prizes up for grabs and a massive incentive for a teacher who brings 10 or more school entries to the event. In an effort to encourage participation from both primary and high school children, the TriA-Fun organisers will be raffling a weekend for two at Shamwari Game Reserve (accommodation, meals and game drives included). A teacher whose school has 10 or more entries will secure an entry into this lucky draw. Teachers will get an additional ticket in the

draw for every five additional entries they bring in. To date there have been no takers, so a massive opportunity to a deserving teacher out there to get the entries in for the 15th and bag a wonderful weekend away. For the final round, the top three boys’ and girls’ schools teams (primary and high schools) will be awarded prizes, as will the top three individuals finishers in each category. The top three male and female teams and the top three age group winners in the individual race as well as the overall male and female winners will each win a set of tyres sponsored by General Tyre. Other prizes on the morning will be sponsored by Sharwoods, Toby’s Caltex, Cytomax, Kauai, Triangle Sports, Adidas, Performance Bikes and Hooke Sea Fishing. See www.Tri-a-Fun.com for further information and to register before Friday, May 13, when entries close.
