n its heyday, Richmond Hill was home to affluent wool merchants from the 1820 Settlers. Now, thanks to the Mandela Bay development agency’s efforts to revitalise this neighbourhood, it is on track to becoming “the Sea Point of Port Elizabeth”. “Richmond Hill is on track to become Port

Elizabeth’s version of the Sea Point urban renewal success story,” said Ian Olivier, area principal of Pam Golding Properties in Port Elizabeth. “The upgrades at the Donkin reserve and the Athenaeum are at the heart of the sustainable economic growth here and in Central.” The MBDA projects were also praised by the Richmond Hill special ratings area (SRA), which has been established in this suburb. “It is fantastic to see the upgrades,” said Ke-

Residents have also rolled up their sleeves to contribute, through cleaning and running their own neighbourhood watch. “These factors also have an impact,” said Sonja Tredoux, also from Pam Golding. “As a result, Richmond Hill has become an attractive choice for buyers.”

Daar is baie aartappels bemark. Toe kom die droogte en gevolglik het bykans geen aartappels die markte bereik nie. “Die pryse het aanhou styg en gedurende Januarie en Februarie vanjaar is die hoogste pryse

First ever NOSA Award for TPT container terminal THE Ngqura Container Terminal (NCT) was accredited with a NOSCAR status recently by NOSA. The impressive score of 95% was achieved after the NOSA audit, which is recognised as an international benchmark in the management of Occupational Health, Safety and Environmental risks. Acting terminal manager of Ngqura Container Terminal, Noxolo Thabatha, said, “NOSA’s 2015 audit results, which have only just been released, not only show our outstanding performance in the realm of safety but reaffirm our commitment to teamwork and motivation as a terminal.” The NOSCAR award is the highest rating in the NOSA system and recognises organisations that continuously commit to providing safe and healthy work environments for employees as well as the safety of cargo handled. Until now TPT’s car terminals in PE and East London have been the leading lights and last October were recipients of NOSCAR awards for the fifth and tenth years respectively. “Safety, management of risk for staff and goods alike and sustainability are a priority.

This is one of the pillars of Transnet’s Market Demand Strategy and embedded in TPT’s value charter as it strives to attain and maintain a standard of safety, health, environment and quality. This goes beyond the minimum legislative requirements to ensure it becomes more competitive and efficient,” said Siya Mhlaluka, General Manager, Eastern Cape. Among the many items against which NCT was measured were the condition of the premises and housekeeping; mechanical, electrical and personal safe guarding; management of fire and other emergency risks; SHE incident recording and investigations (known as the disabling incident frequency rate DIFR) and organisational management. 2015 was a safety precedent setting year for NCT which achieved zero major incidents for two consecutive months in January and February. In the 2015/2016 year-to-date an incident rate of 17 was achieved which is a substantial improvement on the 37 incidents of the 2014/2015 financial year. “This safety record affirms our commitment to not exceeding our safety target of 24 incidents in a year,” said Thabatha. – REPORTER

“Markpryse was gevolglik 93% hoër vir hierdie tydperk.

– LOURENS SCHOEMAN

Local graphic designer makes it big in Chicago REPORTER A HOLIDAY visit to a high-end visual effects company in New York led to a dream job offer in Chicago for Port Elizabeth graphic designer, Udesh Chetty. While on holiday in New York City a couple of years ago, Chetty visited his then future company’s office in downtown Manhattan where he met some heads of department and discussed work opportunities. A few months later, he received a phone call from their office in Chicago, offering him a job. Chetty is now the visual effects supervisor at Chicago’s The Mill, one of the biggest post-production houses in the world. Since completing his BTech in Graphic Design at Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University in 2003, Chetty has worked primarily on television commercials as a visual effects artist and supervisor. In 2014, he won a craft gold Loerie Award for his visual effects work on Prudential’s “South Pole” TV commercial directed by Velocity Films – it was the only visual effects craft gold awarded that year. The prestigious Loerie awards are presented annually to honour the finest brand communications specialists across Africa and the Middle East, in fields including video, digital media, design and advertising. Chetty’s accolade made his relocation process and the transition into

his new job at The Mill much easier. “Besides having work published and having won internationally recognized awards in my visual effects work, having a BTech degree was also helpful,” said Chetty. NMMU lecturer and head of the Applied Design department, Mike Swanepoel, said he remembers Chet-

ty, who received a mark of 100% for his BTech practical portfolio, as a diligent and talented student. “He was a talented illustrator and this served him well in constructing characters and scenes within the 3D environment,” he said. Swanepoel continued to express how proud he is of Chetty’s success. “It is always rewarding as lecturers to see our students succeed, especially on an international stage.” Before moving to Chicago, Chetty worked as a graphic designer and motion graphics artist at Searle Street Post Production in Cape Town. Some of his work includes the Jeep ‘4x4ever’ TV commercial, Alfa Romeo’s ‘If emotion made a car’ commercial, and the Cadillac Escalade ‘The Herd’ TV commercial. Chetty creates digital pop art, exploring visual parodies and narratives through illustration, 3D rendering, and photo manipulation. He does this using among other apps, Autodesk Flame, a software application which allows artists to manipulate digital film footage. When asked to advise those hoping to make it in the industry, he said newbies in the industry needed to spend more time dedicated to their art. “A vocation in the arts, like any other field, requires a lot of time, dedication and passion in order to attain your goals. Constantly learning and creating in your spare time definitely gives you the edge in a professional environment,” he said.

First UK/SA Research Chair launched REPORTER THE launch of a bilateral Research Chair between South Africa and the United Kingdom – the first joint Chair between the two countries – took place recently. The bilateral Chair in “ocean science and food security” is jointly hosted by Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University, the University of Southampton (United Kingdom) and the National Oceanography Centre (NOC), also in the UK. The new Chair forms part of the South African Research Chair Initiative (SARChI), established by the Department of Science and Technology (DST) in partnership with the National Research Foundation (NRF). It is jointly funded by the NRF and the UK’s Newton Fund. Oceanographer Prof Mike Roberts, who spent 26 years working as a senior researcher in the Department of Environmental Affairs’ Oceans and Coasts division, is the incumbent of the new Chair, which is being formally launched at the 2016 Going Global conference in Cape Town. NMMU Deputy Vice-Chancellor: Research and Engagement Prof Andrew Leitch – who gave a talk at the conference on how this Chair fits into NMMU’s marine and maritime agenda, one of the major flagship focus points of the University – said, “This is the first joint Chair between the United Kingdom and South Africa. We are proud to be partnering with the University of Southampton and the NOC, which are both top ranked as the world’s premier research institutes in marine and ocean science. NMMU has marine research expertise going back more than 30 years in our Institute for Coastal and Marine Research, and this long track record will support the

Chair’s establishment.” NMMU is involved in each of the various Working Groups defined by Operation Phakisa to develop South Africa’s Blue Economy – the Chair will also play a key role in Operation Phakisa, with its focus on marine food security and aquaculture. NMMU also hosts the South African International Maritime Institute (SAIMI). The launch of the Chair was attended by Science and Technology Minister Naledi Pandor and the British High

nutrients from the bottom of the ocean and brings them to the surface.” Essentially, this process provides food for the bottom end of the food chain – phytoplankton, zoo plankton, and so on – which ultimately provides food for fish and top predators. How this links with food security is that, in parallel with global climate change, the ocean’s upwelling system is changing, which will affect all levels of the food chain. “The Western Indian Ocean [which stretches from Cape Town to Oman] is unique in that there are around 2-billion people living on islands who depend on artisanal fishing [small trade rather than commercial fishing] for their livelihoods.” Changes in the ocean will directly impact on their livelihood. A large part of the Chair’s work will be collecting data using high-tech instruments and creating ocean models from this data. Roberts said the Eastern Indian Oceans Upwelling Research Initiative (EIOURI), supported by Australia, India and China, was well developed, but little research had yet been conducted through WIOURI. He said the link with the University of Southampton created an “innovation bridge” between Southampton’s world-class facilities and South Africa, which was ideally positioned to conduct WIOURI research. On May 11, several postgraduate NMMU students will be leaving for Southampton University, to “acquire skills not available in South Africa”. “By dropping these students into a world class facility, we are immediately creating a centre of excellence at NMMU.” Roberts said NMMU’s first research trip, to collect data off Madagascar, will take place in November.

Prof Mike Roberts is the incumbent of the new Research Chair in ocean science and food security, which is shared between South Africa and the United Kingdom. PHOTO:SUPPLIED Commissioner, Dame Judith Macgregor. As part of the Chair’s research plan, Roberts, who will equally divide his time between NMMU, the University of Southampton and the NOC, will focus on developing the Western Indian Oceans Upwelling Research Initiative (WIOURI) a flagship project of the UNESCO International Indian Ocean Expedition 2 (IIOE2), which was launched in December 2015. “Upwelling is the process that takes

Golf marathon for charity-minded student NMMU golfer Mike Usendorff will soon embark on his longest round of golf yet: an attempt to play 180 holes in just 10 hours. But it’s all for a good cause. Half the money raised during the BTech Marketing student’s golfing challenge on May 16 will be put towards NMMU’s costs to participate in the upcoming University Sport South Africa (USSA) golf tournament. The other half is going towards the Ernie Els Centre for Autism. Usendorff (23), a member of NMMU’s KPMG Madibaz Golf Club, is the son of South African golfing celebrity Dave Usendorff. “I’m very excited. I know it’s not

going to be easy. But even if I don’t reach 180 holes, I know I’ll still be proud, as this is going towards something good,” said Usendorff. “The students are very eager to perform well at this year’s USSA tournament, which will be hosted by Humewood Golf Club, but their willingness to donate a portion of the funding raised to the Ernie Els Foundation for Autism, shows emotional maturity well beyond their ages,” said Karl du Preez, President of the KPMG Madibaz Golf Club. The public is welcome to watch Usendorff’s progress during his golf marathon, which will start at 7am and finish at 5pm.

BE HAPPY, YES U CAN HE IS BACK AFTER 5 YEARS OF SEPARATION

My husband left me and went to London with another woman for 5 years! I tried to bring him back, I visited priests and healers for help but failed. Miss Jessica and Ligan looked through the mirror and assured me that he’ll call within 4 days, and I’ll pick him at the airport. He really phoned and he’s return after 5 years! He accurately read my fortune (for R200 conMaria and Jacob sultation fee) & told me all my problems without (happily in love again) me mentioning a word. He even used a mirror to show me real-faces of people who were trying to pull me down. Miss Jessica and Ligan performed special-prayers for me, cleansed me from badluck & also gave me powerful lovecrystals plus a special-ring to fix my financial problems. Four (4) days after prayers my husband was back home, asking for forgiveness. I am very happy, we recently reconciled! Like me, all clients I have been referring to him always got GUARANTEED RESULTS in a few days. My son fell into a very dark depression and it fell to me to get up at three in the morning, learn his work and teach it to him. By the grace of God alone, he passed matric,” she

AFTER witnessing first-hand the effects of severe family trauma, Rene van Tonder, who is a mother of three, decided to open a school where she could assist pupils with academic demands while working through the emotional trauma they have experienced. Newly opened Grey Park Academy is situated in Walmer and caters for learners from Grade 1 to 12. The school’s aim is to assist children who have experienced some form of trauma, in coping with not only that trauma, but the academic demands that have to be met, irrespective of the emotional impact. Van Tonder, who studied a B.Ed with psychology majors, said the reason she decided to start Grey Park Academy was due to her family experiencing the emotional impact of having to deal with loss. “In 2014, my husband was diagnosed with terminal cancer. The doctors gave him 3 to 6 months to live. My son was in Grade 11

said. Van Tonder added that her experience made her realise that no matter what life throws at pupils, they are expected to be okay, to pull through on the academics which are compulsory at least until the age of 16. She mentioned that parents may be fighting their own emotional battle after a divorce or death and not necessarily be in a position to support their child emotionally. “No matter how you look at it, the child needs to cope with the trauma and somehow pull through on academics. It is my desire to not only assist children who have walked a cancer path or lost a parent, or any trauma – rape, abuse, divorce, alcoholism. The emotional trauma is the same. “The outcome can have detrimental effects on a child. And if they fail a year because of a system that is just rotating on its daily axis and leaving them behind, the child is set up for even further problems,” she said. The environment at Grey Park Academy ensures that the pupil is able to learn what

is required on an academic level. Emotional support, understanding and any other professional help are provided as well. “I offer the child as well as the parents a support structure to lean on. I have encountered a few sad stories as I have marketed myself at the schools and psychologists – there is a definitive need for the type of service I am offering,” van Tonder added. Grey Park Academy classes are kept small and offer personal attention. The school is passionate about assisting each pupil to achieve their full potential despite what life throws at them. The school has normal hours from 8am to 1:30pm. Parents are kept informed about their child’s progress and are encouraged to be involved in their children’s education. Post matric students who need to improve their results or change direction in career and require to take on a new subject, are also accommodated. For more info about Grey Park Academy, email info@greyparkacademy.co.za or contact Rene van Tonder on 078 173 3024.

Leg-power required for National XCO Cup in PE REPORTER ROUND four of the Stihl 2016 SA XCO Cup Series takes place this year at Settlers’ Park in Port Elizabeth on Saturday, May 14. Eastern Cape Bike Mountain Bike Commissioner, Charl Joubert, said, “Although it will be very much the same as last year’s track, there are a few changes and new instalments, including a brand new rock garden. The upgraded course has 4.2-kilometre laps and an elevation of 170 metres. Joubert also mentioned that the course is very different to the other XCO National Cup tracks. “In the Baakens Valley, there is plenty of beautiful vegetation surrounding the trails, and not too much dust, he added. “It won’t be as technically challeng-

ing as the 2015 PE XCO track; however it will still be technical. There is a lot of climbing involved though, and this will definitely require a lot of powering down and a lot of strength. It’s definitely going to suit the stronger riders, said Joubert. Although the UCI Category 1 rating applies to Pro-Elites only, the Juniors will be able to earn series points, as well as UCI points for their own UCI Junior World Series at some of the Cup Series events. Entries have closed but late entries will be accepted at registration, with a nominal charge of R50 in addition to the entry fee. For more event information, visit

www.cyclingsa.com/2016-sa-mtb-cup-series/ or contact Dellah Paul on 082781 5656.

Despite rare condition, Tianté (2) is ray of sunshine ZELDRÉ STRAUSS SWANEPOEL HER condition is taxing and taking care of her is a daily challenge, but she is never seen as a burden to her loving family. Little Tianté Scott (2) of Bloemendal has been diagnosed with Rett Syndrome - a genetic postnatal neurological disorder so rare that she is believed to be only the 18th person diagnosed in the country, and possibly the only one in Port Elizabeth. Rett Syndrome’s most prominent features include small hands and feet, repetitive wringing of the hands and or putting hands into the mouth. Sufferers also typically have symptoms such as gastrointestinal problems, breathing difficulties and seizures. They are also unable to talk and rarely are able to walk. Tianté, who is in the care of her grandparents, Marlene and Roland Scott, while her mother Kim works during the day, was diagnosed in September 2015 after a brain scan and blood tests were done. Before this confirmation, the family thought that the toddler was just slow in reaching her milestones because she had been born prematurely. “She was a normal baby until she was a year and two months old. She played with toys and enjoyed being in her walking ring. After that she started falling behind in reaching milestones and refused to touch anything. Then we realized something was very wrong, and took her for testing,” explained Marlene. Today little Tianté is unable to walk, stand and talk and she crawls with difficulty. She is unable

to eat anything besides soft baby foods and cannot hold her own bottle. “She also has a sleeping disorder - which means she can be wide awake in the middle of the night or not be able to sleep at all. We have to watch her the whole time because when she tries to crawl, she will bump into things. She doesn’t like touching toys and the only thing she is interested in is watching movies. Then she is at her happiest,” explained Marlene. Marlene and Roland have nothing but praise for the neuro department of the Dora Nginza hospital, where they have to spend a lot of time with Tianté. “Sometimes it’s hard because when she starts crying she is unable to stop for hours - she doesn’t like being out of her comfort zone. But the staff are always friendly and understanding,” said Roland. Marlene and Tianté will be going to the Red Cross Children’s Hospital in Cape Town in August for a check-up. At this visit Tianté might receive a special standing frame which will help to keep her in an upright position, and help straighten her legs. “Shortly after Tianté was diagnosed last year, her mother and I went with her to Red Cross where they assessed Tianté and also provided counselling, where they told us there is nothing that can be done to cure her condition. Basically the only thing we can do is to make sure that she is comfortable,” said Marlene. It was very difficult for the family to hear and accept that their babygirl could either reach the age of 30 or 40, or possibly die at any moment. “It’s tough...but what can we do? This child is a blessing to us and we are still grateful, because there are people out there with much bigger problems than ours. We love her so much and we still give thanks to God and we take each day as it comes.” )Marlene would like to reach out to other parents who might suspect that their child has Rett syndrome to start a support group. The only known such support group is currently based in Cape Town. For more info call Marlene on 072 952 6412.

Kaartjies is by Computicket te koop. FOTO: VERSKAF

) Defending the Caveman word van vandag tot Saterdag elke aand om 8nm. by Old Grey in Port Elizabeth opgevoer. Kaartjies is vanaf R160 per persoon by Computicket beskikbaar.

Two comedy gems staged REPORTER ‘AS the Koekie Crumbles’ and ‘Careful’ will be staged from May 18 to 22, at The Little Theatre. These two adult-content, thought-provoking plays were penned by the late Fiona Coyne, a familiar face on SATV as The Weakest Link presenter. Coyne’s works have been performed worldwide and these two comedy gems incorporate humour, pathos and brilliant insight into human relationships. This promises to be an evening of good, solid entertainment in the theatre. ‘As the Koekie Crumbles’ is traditionally a one-woman show and in this instance, the five roles will be in the very capable hands of Niqui Cloete-Barrass, who moves just as easily from being one of the top cabaret performers in the city, to straight roles on the PEMADS stage. She is well remembered for her outstanding performance in another one-woman show, Shirley Valentine. ‘As the Koekie Crumbles’ is set in Kenya, with some very recognisable, fun characters, who could have stepped straight out of White Mischief or Out of Africa and into the late 80’s in Kenya. ‘Careful’ was the final play penned by Fiona Coyne and was written for the Dublin Gay Festival, where Roy Sargeant’s outstanding production, starring Diane Wilson, received great critical acclaim and was nominated for two awards. It went on to enjoy

very successful runs in South Africa. ‘Careful’ follows the developing and, at times acerbic, relationship between an ageing actress and a gay theatre critic. These two roles will be played by stalwarts, Yolande Farrow and Caren Bestbier. Both productions will be directed by Linda-Louise Swain, moving from her successful onstage theatrical career at PEMADS, to the directorial seat. Tickets cost R60 and will be on sale through Computicket. The shows run from May 18 to 20 at 7:30pm and on May 21 to 22 at 2:30pm. PEMADS patrons may book their seats at the Opera House outlet of Computicket, if they produce their membership card. Tickets will also be on sale at the Little Theatre box office prior to each performance. A cash bar will be available and there is a coffee bar/restaurant on the premises.

Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days initiative AT a time where South Africa is facing damaging effects of drought on food prices, ever-greater levels of food insecurity as a result of inflation and increases to cost of living due to rising petrol costs, the issue of hungry children is inevitably set to rise. Research carried out by the University of Stellenbosch Nutritional Information Centre (NICUS) has shown that in South Africa, one in five children do not have breakfast every day. Children who attend their lessons hungry, lack attentiveness to their school work and as a result, find the process of learning new work extremely difficult. “After a night of fasting, breakfast is required to top up glucose stores for the day ahead. In addition to providing energy, breakfast helps a child to meet their daily nutrient requirements. Optimal functioning and performance require adequate nutrition,” said Kelly Francis, registered dietician, on behalf of Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days™ Initiative. Many households do not always have access to breakfast and many children are forced to go without. As a result, these children are deficient in the vital vitamins and minerals needed for healthy growth, and the energy required to do their best in their studies or for physical activities. Those children with empty stomachs will not be able to focus and learn, and are disadvantaged even before the first lessons begin. For this reason, Kellogg’s has collaborated with the Department of Basic Education on an important community driven hunger relief programme, the Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days™ initiative which makes sure that children attending school start their days with a full stomach.

Win a Kellogg’s hamper, valued at R300. PHOTO: SUPPLIED Since it began in 2014, the Kellogg’s Breakfast for Better Days™ initiative has served more than 13 million breakfasts to learners every school day in Gauteng, Kwa-Zulu Natal, the Eastern and Western Cape provinces. Kellogg’s currently serves breakfast on a daily basis to the following Primary schools in Nelson Mandela Bay: Adolph Schauder, Canzibe, Coega, Esitiyeni, Gertrude Shope, Funimfundo, Helenvale, Kama, Soweto on Sea and Swartkops. Win! Win! Win! Four lucky readers can win a Kellogg’s hamper, valued at R300 each. The hamper contains the following items: • 1 large Rice Krispies • 1 large Corn Flakes • 1 large All Bran Flakes • 1 Special K cereal • 1 choco pops • 1 Coco pops • 2 Corn flakes strips • 1 coco pops strips • 2 Special K cereal bars (chocolate) • 1 Special K cereal bars (berries) • 2 Coco pops cereal bars. Reality Training Centre provides free skills training THE REACH Reality Training Centre was established in 2002 to assist rehabilitated persons financially - short term while they were getting back on their feet. It soon became clear that being financially independent was an enormous obstacle. To make matters worse, available employment required skills and being unemployed; their candidates could not afford training. REACH took the next step and started the Reality Training Centre project to provide free skills training. The demand for the training was so overwhelming that in 2004, Reality opened its doors to all unemployed people. Since inception they have trained

in excess of 3 300 students. Courses currently offered include: basic computers, bookkeeping, catering, industrial and domestic sewing, entrepreneurship, work ethic and literacy. Last year they trained 632 students and are now positioning the organisation to train up to 1 034 students per year, free of charge. The centre also assists students from Greenwood Primary with literacy. All this has been achieved despite challenges such as premises, equipment and funds. Nolovuyo Ngqandede, a former student at the centre, said, “I heard about the centre through a friend of mine. I did the catering course. On completion of

the course, I started my own Catering Company in Motherwell. I have since been booked for two functions and I have been able to employ people to help me with the functions. I would definitely recommend the centre to others, especially those that don’t have the finances to pay for further education after completing their matric.” A Quarterly Labour Force Survey revealed that 34.3% of the Nelson Mandela Bay working age residents are unemployed. The reality Training Centre provides skills to help eradicate unemployment and to provide hope and direction to those that do not see a bright future for themselves. – REPORTER

She performed a one day special prayer for me. She cleansed me, united me with my husband, gave me a special ring for luck and love crystals. Today I have a big business and my son enjoys a promotion. Thanks LADY AMELIA for fixing my marriage, luck, protecting me from my enemies, health and solving sexual problems. She saved my son from drugs and alcohol. Call LADY AMELIA 076 101 6134 X1RDARN5-110516-PX-mgrbaa-prayer

TALKING F1: NATALIE LE CLUE

THIS SPORTING LIFE: MICHAEL SHAFTO

F1: all eyes turn to Spain

Sharks show how it’s done

TRADITIONALLY the first European race of the F1 season sees a raft of updates made to the cars. It’s no different in 2016, as teams look to take a crucial step forward at Spain’s Circuit de Catalunya. Red Bull Racing dropped the bombshell a few days after the Russian Grand Prix that Dannil Kvyat and Max Verstappen would swop seats. Ostensibly, the move appears to have been made following Kvyat’s attempt at playing bumper cars with Sebastian Vettel in Russia but there’s a fair bit more at play than that. For one, Russian driver Kvyat hasn’t been that impressive in the Red Bull alongside Daniel Ricciardo. Then, there’s that incident with the Ferrari in Russia. However, neither of these two things is enough to warrant a demotion to the junior team. Drivers go through indifferent patches and make mistakes but they aren’t dropped at the first sign of strife, usually. Romain Grosjean’s troublesome season at Lotus and Pastor Maldonado’s F1 career are testament to the fact that teams usually stick it out. But not in Kvyat’s case. The incident in Russia is nothing more than an excuse to promote Verstappen from Toro Rosso into the senior team. While the teenaged Dutch driver may be singing Red Bull’s praises and swearing that he’s never looked elsewhere for a drive, we know better. It’s only his second F1 season, but it’s obvious that Verstappen has big potential. This makes him a hot commodity for other teams and there’s no better way to keep him close than to move him to the senior team. Well played Red Bull. What a difference 12 months can make. In 2015 Mercedes’ Nico Rosberg arrived at the Spanish GP under pressure. This time around he arrives at the fifth round of the season with four race

NOT ONLY did the Sharks produce easily their best performance of the season by beating the Hurricanes 32-15 at Kings Park last weekend – but demonstrated, too, that they have two of South Africa’s best flyhalves into the bargain. There really is very little to choose between these two very fine No. 10s. They are Pat Lambie, finally back from injury and looking as good as ever – even if only in a secondary role that must have reminded the New Zealanders how much respect he deserves. The other, naturally, is Garth April, who has been holding down, with great efficiency, the Sharks flyhalf role with surprising aplomb. We know all about Lambie and his rapid rise to the top echelon of our halfback talent – this 25-year-old established Springbok who has shown class ever since leaving Michaelhouse School in the KZN Midlands. April is a surprise package: a 23-year-old who just last year was as yet undiscovered and playing club rugby in the Eastern Cape. What a country this is for flyhalf talent. In time these two could set up a rivalry such as that between Dawie de Villiers and the mercurial Jannie Barnard setting the South African rugby world alight with their rivalry. Then along came the Diggers darling, Gerald Bosch. So to the Lambie and April rivalry. How will they fare in the battle for flyhalf supremacy ahead? Here’s a thought: perhaps they won’t need to. Keith Oxlee, until he established himself as “supremo” had to work hard to reach and maintain his position as the No. 1. Lambie strikes one as a member of the Oxlee kind – an allround player of of the top eche-

wins under the belt and a dominant lead over teammate Lewis Hamilton in the standings. Now the question shifts from “Can Nico do it?” to “Can he keep doing it?” The German is convinced that Hamilton will hit back soon and he’s likely right. However, it’s also a great mental space for Rosberg to operate in - take it one race and one lap at a time and don’t take it for granted. Besides a bit of brooding on the Russian GP podium, Hamilton has appeared decidedly chilled, even apathetic, to his dreadful run so far in 2016. But don’t be fooled by his supposedly indifferent approach. The reigning champ more than has the skill to hit back hard and just needs to find the sweet-spot for it to be unleashed. From the Ferrari garage the hope is that the performance deficit in the last race was specific to the circuit. It could’ve been given that the Russian circuit is power dominant. But though they may be closer in Spain it will extremely tough to beat the Silver Arrows around Catalunya. McLaren, already vastly improved in 2016, is planning to introduce a significant upgrade to their car this weekend. They hope that a new floor, wings, and bits of other bodywork will be enough to propel them into the top ten in qualifying and a solid points score with both cars. The Haas F1 Team will run the upgraded Ferrari engine, introduced in Russia, in Spain. The Renault team will run an updated version of their front and rear wings in the hopes of upping their game in a tight mid-field battle. Seven drivers on the current grid have won the Spanish GP and thanks to its status as a test venue everyone knows his way around these parts. But as familiar as they are with the Circuit de Catalunya it doesn’t do anything to lessen the challenge.

lon: a master distributor, an excellent and accurate goal and touchline kicker, a defender always to be counted on. Seemingly, April has all these gifts, too – in abundance. The two might even be played together; April at centre and Lambie, a player who strikes one as the slightly more astute, at No. 10. As the saying goes, both players have it – that special ability – “in spades”. Time will tell. Whatever the future holds for the Sharks: including both with April at centre, Andre Esterhuizen or Paul Jordaan, preferably the latter, could be retained and “benched”. Things then would certainly be looking up for the Sharks, perhaps even the Springboks. To return to the Kings Park game; the meritorious defeat inflicted on the Hurricanes – not generally expected, it should be noted – has shifted the Sharks to eighth place on the overall log after 10 matches, directly behind the Bulls in sixth place and the Lions in seventh, both from nine matches. Until halftime it was 8-all, JP Pietersen, with his first try, bringing to scores to parity. It was no surprise when the ever-alert Pietersen picked up a second try (and Man of the Match) as the Sharks began to take control in a second half that produced some fine rugby – the Hurricanes trying desperately to play catch-up, but to no avail against a KZN side playing their best rugby of the season. Here at home the PE Kings, doing their best to play catch-up, found themselves once more on the receiving end of 34-18 defeat at five tries to two. In an often ragged game the Kings could simply not stay the pace and after leading at halftime it was mostly downhill for the home side.

EXPRESS ON WHEELS: BETTIE GILIOMEE

Ford’s Ranger is bagging the awards FORD released its new Ranger at the end of last year, just a few months before the February launch of one of its biggest competitors, the Toyota Hilux. And the competition is stiff, with the Ranger bagging many prestige local awards in recent months, while the Hilux topped the sales in March and April. Ford’s Ranger and Everest were recently announced as winners in the 2016 Drive Out/ WegRy 4x4 of the Year Awards. In these awards the New Ford Ranger was announced Double Cab of the Year with the all-new Ford Everest taking top award for the SUV segment. This follows close on the heels of the Ranger being named one of Car Magazine’s Best Buys for 2016 winning the best double cab bakkie title for a fifth year in a row. The generous size of the Ranger’s cabin, high specification level, refinement and ride comfort, as well as the rugged looks and performance, were all praised by the Car editorial team. You just have to go on any school run, rugby or festival day and just see how many double cabs are parked there in the middle of the concrete jungle. It’s used on the school run, office run, for holidays and has become the family car for many. And to accommodate those who like to drive a bakkie, without feeling that they are driving a bakkie, the new Ranger is laden with comfort and convenience features, not to mention the fact that the test model had an automatic transmission – making up for what I believe the worst thing about driving a bakkie is – changing those gears. And then there is the rear camera – which (in my opinion) should be compulsory for all bakkies used on the school run. The refreshed line-up of Rangers, which have been available in SA since November last year, comprises 33 models including Sin-

gle Cab, Super Cab, Double Cab and Wildtrak. The new Ranger is produced at Ford’s Silverton Assembly Plant in Pretoria and exported to 148 markets in Africa and Europe. The Duratorq TDCi engines are manufactured at the Struandale Engine Plant in PE. Exterior The new design gives the Ranger a bolder, more sophisticated appearance and the test model was the double cab variety. For those who like to drive on the wildside the Ranger has 800mm water wading depth and 230mm of ground clearance. Interior Ford has gone to a lot of trouble with high tech features, such as the Ford Sync 2 infotainment system with an eight-inch touchscreen (on the higher spec models) to create a car like interior and make you forget you are sitting inside a bakkie. SYNC®2, the latest generation of Ford’s incar connectivity system, is standard on the new Ranger XLT and Wildtrak models. Using natural voice commands, the driver can control the car’s climate controls, entertainment system and phone functions. The new Ranger also features a 240-volt power socket that can be used to power your laptop or cellphone. The Ranger line-up features Electronic Stability Program (ESP) and ABS as standard features on all but the Base model (where ABS is an option). In addition, the top-specification new Ranger Wildtrak offers a wide range of first-inclass driver aids including Lane Keeping Alert and Lane Keeping Aid, Adaptive Cruise Control with Forward Alert, Tyre Pressure Monitoring System, Driver Impairment Monitor, as well as Front and Rear Park Assist. The Wildtrak can be specified in 3.2 TDCi 4x2 manual or automatic, or the range-topping 4x4 Automatic.

Engine The Ranger range is powered by the latestgeneration Duratorq TDCi engine and Duratec petrol engine. Ford engineers fine-tuned the suspension of the new version for additional comfort and better handling. One of the other ways of taking the bakkie out of a bakkie for the way it is used these days, the Ranger has an electric power-assisted steering (EPAS) system. This allows for light and manageable steering for low-speed manoeuvring – very useful in shopping centre parking lots and tight spaces on the school run – while out on the open road and at higher speed the EPAS ensures precise steering. Ford’s 3.2-litre Duratorq TDCi five-cylinder diesel engine tops the range. According to Ford, the upgrades include a new exhaust gas recirculation system that helps improve fuel efficiency by up to 18 percent, while still producing 147kW of power and 470Nm of torque. The 2.2-litre four-cylinder Duratorq TDCi has also been upgraded for better performance and efficiency. The peak outputs of the high-power derivative climb from 110kW on the previous model, to 118kW while torque is boosted by 10Nm to 385Nm. An economical mid-power 2.2 Duratorq TDCi engine is also available in certain models, producing 88kW and 285Nm. The new Ranger is also available with Ford’s 2.5-litre Duratec petrol engine, providing 122kW of power and 226Nm of torque. Depending on model derivative, the new Ranger is equipped with a six-speed manual or automatic transmission, or a five-speed manual on the mid-output diesel and petrol versions.

The prices for the New Ranger double cabs range from R290 900 to R597 900. The vehicle test driven was the 3.2 TDCi XLT 4X4 Automatic which retails for R567 900.

Will I buy a Ranger if I could afford it? I still prefer SUV’s so I would rather go for the 7seater Ford Everest which is the SUV version of the Ranger. But if it has to be a bakkie, then the Ranger is definitely loaded with high tech, comfort and convenience features which will make yousoon forget that it is a bakkie and that you will sometimes have to sacrifice tight parking spaces.

Being the 10th anniversary of this event, organised by the PE Amateur Athletic Club and Sunridge Village Shopping Centre, it promises to be the greatest to date. Their aim this year is a record breaking 2500 competitors. A special 10th anniversary commemorative medal will be handed to the first 1220 finishers in the 10km, as well as the first 1220 finishers in the 5km events. This special medal is designed to be used as a key ring as well. This will once again be a fun-filled family affair with fantastic hampers, lucky draws and some major prizes. These include a R2 500 shopping experience from Sunridge SuperSpar, a major sponsor to the event. “Although an official EPA Participating Road Running League event, it also caters for the whole family with distances of both 5km and 10km,” said Suzanne Fincham, Centre Manager at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre. The school with the most bulk entries in the 5km race will earn themselves a R1000 prize. There is also a special prize for the company with the most bulk entries. Other fun category prizes include first Family Home, Parent and Pram, Dad and Dog and Mom and Tot. However, there is a restriction of 1 dog per entry. Entrants wanting to qualify for these special prizes must indicate this at registration. Timed results will be available for both the 10km and 5km events. These will be posted on the windows in front of Sunridge Build It, and on their website www.sunridgevillage.co.za shortly after the prize giving. The first 1 000 pre-entries at one of the following shops at Sunridge Village Shopping Centre will receive a special event T-shirt: Spec Savers, PostNet and Myburg’s Sports. Other venues where pre-entries can be made are at all major sport shops in Port Elizabeth as well as Brockett’s Sports in Uitenhage. Bulk and pre-entries close on Wednesday, May 11 at 5pm. Festivities kick off on Friday, May 13 at 5pm with pre-registration and late entries in the mall.

24 SPORT

PE EXPRESS | WEDNESDAY 11 MAY 2016

Join Algoa Motorsport for Round 4 REPORTER ALGOA Motorsport will be holding Round 4 of the Regional Championships on May 14 at the Aldo Scribante Circuit. One of the highlights of the day is the return of the Dunlop Eastern Cape Historic series to the Aldo Scribante Circuit. Chris Radloff, current leader on points, is going to have to pull out all the stops with back-inform Wayne Botha showing real pace in East London. The BMW 2002TI of Rob Rowe has proved to be quick around Aldo Scribante and will certainly be a contender for the class win. Class A should see Derek Boy from Queenstown in the Chev Can AM take honours. Brendan Smith and Jason Greyling, both local lads, will be looking for victory in class B. Class C should see Ryno Burger and Shaun Rudolph fighting for the win. Class D has proved to be the most competitive class with no fewer than 7 cars going head to head. Some spectacular racing is expected with the likes of Ford Escort, Fairlane, Capri, Anglia, Alfa Sprint, Alfa GTV, Opel Kadett, Toyota Corona, Nissan Skyline, Datsun SSS, BMW 2002TI and of course the Chev Can Am in action. The Marque Cars; Street and Fine Cars will also take to the track, and the day will end with a 45 min Endurance Race for Sport and GT cars. The motorcycle rounds promise to provide

lots of action, with some of the Unlimited and 600cc riders taking to the track in the Historic Motorcycle category as well, for the first time. This category is really taking off locally, as well as nationally, with the newly formed Classic Superbike Racing Association, incorporating events such as the SATT; All Motorcycle Race Day at East London on 28 May and the ever popular PE200 on November 19, 2016. Spectators will now be able to see some of their favourite riders competing in the modern as well as historic events. Rory Potgieter, from East London, will be in his debut ride, taking over his father, Irfaan Johnson’s Pre-sling. Irfaan will be debuting his latest Historic motorcycle, a 750cc Pre-Sling, with an 1100 motor, fondly known as the “Seveneleven”, at the event. Spectators should note that the Zone 2 Coega entrance is currently closed for an upgrade, so they will need to take the No 764 Coega IDZ turnoff, and proceed to Neptune Road. They should turn right, and go through the Security Boom, then keep straight until they reach Lwandle Road, where they should turn right and continue on to the circuit entrance. Entry for spectators is R50 per motor vehicle for an action-filled day of entertainment suitable for the whole family. There will be the usual catering stalls, as well as a braai fire in the bar, with braai packs on sale and a full bar service.

Horseracing and family fun comes to Fairview Racecourse REPORTER SUNDAY May 15 sees the World Sports Betting East Cape Derby come to Fairview Racecourse in in what will undoubtedly be a bumper family day out. Racegoers will be treated to great horseracing, as well as a host of entertainment and competitions throughout the day. The two main races, the WSB EC Derby (Gr3) over 2400m and the Epol Dahlia Plate (L) over 1200m, include prize money of R350 000 and R150 000 respectively. Food stalls at Fairview on the day will be selling a host of delicious refreshments. For those interested in more formal hospitality options, the HB Christian Room will be hosting a delicious buffet luncheon for R250 per person,

which also includes a complimentary welcome gift and Computaform. The dress code is formal and the theme is Run of the Roses. Adding to the creative flair of the day will be a flower arrangement competition by local florists. The arrangements will be auctioned off at each table in aid of Community Chest. There will also be a Nelson Mandela Metropolitan University (NMMU) fashion show and design competition. For the kids, there will be an adventure and activities area which includes a jumping castle, target shooting, sky runners, face painting, pony rides and a range of giant games such as pickup sticks, jenga, snakes and ladders and dominoes – a guarantee of hours of fun come raceday. The Morris Minor Club will be there to showcase their truly unique vehicles. Gates open at 11am. Entrance is free.
